Oh cirdaneth what have you done? Now I'm thinking of Sam as a kind of sub-narrator, making some of the most profound observations in the book on behalf of the author. A sort of blessed fool, an idiot savant. There's probably a thesis lying somewhere on that very theme,waiting to be discovered.
It's certainly distracted me from my present pointless task of block scanning the text in a low-level analysis (I won't bore you with the reason). This has proved quite difficult as I keep getting drawn in to the story and have to start again.
Analysis is a two-edged sword. The good is balanced by the undesirable. I've discovered a few errors and inconsistencies which now jump out at me and spoil my enjoyment (again I won't reveal them here) but I'd say that less detailed analysis is no bad thing and can add much to the pleasure gained from the book.
