> The past tense of car- is indeed carnë.

Let's say it was 1937-39 when Tolkien wrote the Etymologies. On the other hand, it certainly was cáre around 1946 when Tolkien wrote the 'Notion Club Papers' as ohtakáre is attested in SD:246.

Helge argues that Tolkien had apparently limited the use of vowel-lengthening past tenses mainly based on the replacement káre > carne from Fíriel's Song to the Etymologies, but as the even later reappearance of the Form in the Notion Club Papers shows, that is not the case.

So a blanket statement that the past tense 'is indeed carne doesn't do - instead, we see Tolkien changing the form back and forth from the Qenya Lexicon káre to the Early Qenya grammar karne to Fíriel's Song káre to the Etymologies carne to the Notion Club Papers #káre. For all I know, he still might not have made up his mind in 1968.

What's more, just as in English, its entirely possible for a given verb to have both a strong and a weak past-tense form, coexistent: e.g., "shine", strong pa.t. "shone", weak pa.t. "shined". Further, as in English, it may be that the strong pa.t. forms "sound" older and/or more poetic than the weak form.

So I see no reason to state the the pa.t. of kar- "is" one or the other: better to say that both strong and weak pa.t. forms are attested.

Elennilda, I would expect ontië to be its gerund.

The active participle is more likely to be técala

stem: caita- to lie down
present: caitëa - is lying
past: cëantë - lied
future: caituva - will lie
perfect: acëantië? I have no clue... - was lying
aorist: caita - lies
participle: caitaina
participle: caitala
gerund: caitië

I'm fairly sure the past is fine but the perfect is an absolute guess, not even an educated one. would _kay'ta_ become _akayantie_ in the perfect? Since in the past it became _kayante_... ?

For the perfect, I'd also have come up with acëantië (but I'd have glossed it as "has lied"); Its a shame that "irregular" verbs are too... well... irregular for us to know their forms for certain.

Of course it's okay to revive this game (as well as any older thread... as long as something is here, and someone has something to add to it, please go ahead)
