He was a veteran of the WW I trenches, in the horrific Battle of the Somme in 1916. He did not lose his faith, unlike perhaps millions on both sides. But anyone trying to preach a pacifist (he was not one) "Evil is just the absence of Good" line to him would have gotten a very severe "I do not suffer fools gladly!" treatment from him, IMO.
