Post A Guardian's Tale(New members wanted!)
on: March 10, 2005 03:58
Dawn calmly cast its soft glow over the quiet forest of Mirkwood. The only sound was the rustle of the wind in the trees, and the occasional bird song. Verya leaned up against the tree and stirred the embers of the fire in front of her. Her gaze drifted to her fox, Narwa, sleeping at her feet, and she smiled slightly. She then pulled her pack open and took out a packet of lembas and opened it, and broke off a piece. As she saw Narwa's ears twitch, she chuckled and tossed her a piece of the lembas.
"I never could eat without you hearing me, mellon nin." She said softly, smiling as Narwa nibbled the lembas. She then ate quickly, her eyes constantly searching through the trees. She then packed up the remainder of her supplies and stood up, pulled on her long coat and cloak, and drew her sword, Saravana, and walked softly through the trees, followed closely by Narwa.
Once she had reached the river that ran through Mirkwood, she suddenly heard a rustle in the bushes behind her, and soft footsteps as well. Picking up Narwa, she walkied silently over to one of the trees nearby and climbed up quickly, slipping Narwa into her pack. Sheathing her sword, she drew out her longbow and nocked an arrow, pulled the string back until it was taut, and watched the ground below for the source of the sound, ready to fire...

Brannon had been hunting with a small host of elves quite some way away from the safety of the King's Halls when he had been separated from the group. This was not much of a problem as the young elf knew his way around the woods quite well, and the only real concern that he was filled with at that particular moment was the possibility of his friends finding game while he did not. This of course caused him some trouble, and he now regretted choosing to find his way through the thick undergrowth and brambles instead of taking a safer and less complicated route. When he left the group they had been tracking deer, but Brannon was sure he had caught sight of a few pheasants worth hunting.

'Well, one lives and learns' he thought to himself as he finally found his way out of the brush and back into the open, even if this 'opening' was sheltered largely by many Beech trees.

Brannon was a young elf, not yet 1000 years, and his blue eyes gave away the innocence of his unlearned life. He had never left Mirkwood's borders and so had never known anything but the hunting in parties, feasting at night and singing songs in the Elven King's halls. Brushing leaves off of his tunic, and wiping the blood away from a few small scratches he had managed to sustain, he looked around with a sigh and then listened intently. Everything was quiet, almost too quiet. The elf then noticed that there was a small campfire in the clearing, which meant that another person must have been there not too long ago. But before the elf could even step foreword his attention was drawn towards a sudden flutter of heavy bird wings, and he spun round as he drew his bow and followed the pheasant as it flew up into the trees.

"Ai!" He exclaimed as the arrow fell loose from his bow and he looked up with surprise at the elf in the tree. The Pheasant escaped, and there was no little hope of him finding anything else. The girl was aiming an arrow directly at him, and he knelt down slowly to retrieve his fallen arrow without removing his eyes from her. He doubted that she would shoot, but he was weary all the same.

As she saw the elf down below watching her intently and trying to retrieve his arrow, Verya lowered her bow and slipped the arrow back in her quiver. She watched him intently for a few seconds, and climbed down out of the tree silently. As she stood up, she stared into his eyes, and saw innocence in them. Holding her hands in front of her, she softly asked him, "Man i eneth lin?"(What is your name?)

Nénuninquë had been walking along the trails, marvelling at the hills and trees around her. She was, however, a bit clumsy, and missed her footing on a hill. "Whoa...-wha-wha-whaaa!" She screamed as she lost her balance. She slid and rolled down the hill, finally landing on a trail with a thump! She recovered her bearings, and looked around at the others, while brushing grass out of her hair.

((Hello! mind if i join? Anariel's in the DB!))

Anariel walked through her long missed home of Mirkwood. She had been traveling for quite some time and had not been able to visit until now. She stroked the small hawk on her shoulder with one hand, smiling faintly as she led her horse, Arod, behind her.

The elf ranger had thought she was alone at this point, until she heard the voices of fellow elves not far ahead. 'Ai...what a gift it is to hear the mystic voices of my own kin again.' she thought to herself, relieved.

As she came through the bushes into the open space with the other three figures, she laid a hand on her heart in greeting, bowing her head.
"Mae govannen, mellonamin..(well met, my friends)," she said gently, "I am Anariel Narie."

The hawk on her shoulder, Chaos, let out a small chirp and ruffled her feathers as a large, barking creature lept through the trees. It was Anariel's large german shepard dog, Felarof.

"Fel!" said Anariel sharply,"Settle.." she said to the dog as he sat at her heels, wagging his tail friendily, "There's a good lad..."

The elf smiled slightly when he introduced himself. "Brannon i eneth nín," he replied. But before he could ask the maiden what her name was a second elf tumbled down to meet them. Brannon was startled by this (but found it rather funny all the same), and by the looks of things the she-elf he had just met was as surprised as he was.

"Suilad (greetings)," he said as the elf stood up to meet them both. A third elf then came into the clearing, and with her walked a German Shepard.

"Mae govannen, mellon min..(well met, my friends)," she said gently, "I am Anariel Narie."

"Mae govannen Anariel, I am Brannon." He said in reply. He thought it odd that he should meet so many elves out here in the depths of the forest, and at the same time not be able to find or hunt a single deer. He returned his bow and arrow to their rightful places. "Well, I can't say I've met as many new elves as this at once this far out in the woods." He laughed, hoping to hear their names.

As Verya started to introduce herself to Brannon, she was interrupted by the elf maiden tumbling down the hill. As the maiden got up, Verya said, "Suilaid. Man i eneth lin?"

Before she got an answer, another elf came into the clearing, and she introduced herself as Anariel Narie.

"Suilaid Anariel. I am Verya Sarawen, guardian of this forest." She replied. She then turned back to Brannon and said, "I agree with you. I've never had so much company at one time before." A sudden shaking of her pack caused her to put it down, and she remembered Narwa was in there. She opened up the pack and took her out, and said, "And this is Narwa." She ruffled Nar's ears gently, and Nar began to purr.

Brannon smiled, fascinated that someone managed to keep a tame fox. The only time he had ever seen one was during the hunts that he went upon, and even then he had never had a chance to see one up this close before. "Hello Narwa," Brannon said softly, unsure to whether he could stroke it or not. It may have been tame to it's master, but a stranger could cause the animal some distress. He had also heard of the Guardian of Mirkwood, but chose not to ask about it just yet.
"So, where are you all off to then?" The elf asked. He was planning on going back to the halls as he had no chance of finding his group again or finding much to track.

Nénuninquë groaned and rose, rubbing her head. She looked nervously at the Elves in front of her and laughed nervously. She would have introduced herself, if another had not entered the scene. She introduced herself as Anariel. The others began to converse, and she learned that the one named Verya, the first she-Elf she had seen, was the guardian of the forest. Deeply impressed, she mumbled timidly and barely audibly, "Im Nénuninquë..."

As Verya started to answer Brannon's last question, she heard the other she-elf introduce herself as Nenuninque.

"Glassen an ngovaded le, Nenuninque." (It is my joy to meet you) she then said to her. "Ledhiach o man sad?"(Where are you from?)

As she waited for Nen's answer, she turned back to Brannon and said, "I was just leaving for my normal daily rounds of the forest." She then whistled shrilly, and her black mare, Morevana, galloped up next to her. She then stroked her forehead gently, and Mor whickered softly.

Suddenly, Verya drew her sword and looked around quickly, and then whispered barely audibly to the others, "Nad no ennas."(Something is out there.)

Nénuninquë looked up and placed her right hand on her heart, then extended it out to Verya, before saying softly, "Telin o Imladris..." [I come from Rivendell.] The one called Verya then whistled shrilly, and a black horse came up to her. Nénuninquë marvelled at the beauty of the horse as well as the way in which this she-Elf seemed to relate to it. Suddenly, Verya drew her sword and said, "Nad no ennas." ["There's something out there."] Nénuninquë looked about for a moment, then slowly drew the knife on the right side of her belt.

Before Verya was fully prepared for it, an arrow zoomed by the others and implanted itself into her left shoulder. By the time she let out a pained gasp, about twenty orcs burst into the clearing and rushed at the small group. Ignoring her pain, Verya placed herself in front of the others and pulled out her longbow.

Soon, seven of the orcs lay dead, poison arrows protruding from them. Verya then threw aside her bow and picked up her sword, charging at the remaining orcs. The great speed at which she spproached them caught them off guard, and two lay dying as she lashed out at the others. In just a few moments, the rest lay dead, and Verya was leaning up against her mare, gasping for breath and bearing another arrow in her upper arm, and multiple scratches.

Nénuninquë watched in amazement as Verya single-handedly slew all twenty of the Orcs, and quickly noticed the wound she sustained, but waited until she finished her fight before tending to it.

She approached Verya very carefully, and asked her if she would sit down and let her examine it. "I am trained somewhat in healing," she said gently, while softly touching her injured shoulder.

Brannon had never heard of one elf taking down twenty Orcs by them self before, and he wondered if Verya had some kind of supernatural powers or not. He did not even have the time to help out with his bow, and before he knew it all the foes were dead, and she was on the ground with Nénuninque helping her. He looked around listening for more Orcs before he went to help the other two.
"Is there anything I can do to help her?" He asked Nénuninquë with concern in his eyes.

At Nenuninque's request, Verya sat down and began to dig through her pack with her good arm. She pulled out a small vial of blue liquid and drank it slowly, and then said to Nen, "Now my arm is numb, so you don't have to worry about me jerking away from pain."

Nénuninquë nodded at Verya's words, then proceeded to remove the first arrow from her arm. It was stubborn, as she was trying to be as gentle as absolutely possible. When it finally came out, some flesh had been torn, as well. "Oh," she whispered.

Conveniently, Brannon came up to her just then and asked, "Is there anything I can do to help her?"

She looked up at him, thought for a moment, and said, "Yes, there is. Do you know the Alasdhon plant? It would help to clean out her wounds."

"Yes, I know what it is." Brannon replied. "I seem to remember seeing some not too far from here when I was with the hunting group." He turned and searched the forest with his keen eyes. "I will be back as soon as I can," he told them just before he vanished off into the woods. The faint sound of a hunting horn filled the air, and Brannon then knew that the company would be returning to the halls. If they had any luck then they would be found, and could then seek the help of several elves.

He searched the forest for what she had asked him for, and when he came across it he took enough for her needs and returned with haste.
"Here, is this it?" He asked as he hurried back into the clearing and knelt down besides Nénuninquë and Verya. He handed the clump of plants to Nénuninquë and she examined them closely.

Nénuninquë took the plants and examined them closely, then said, "Yes, this is the correct plant. Thank you, Brannon," and smiled at him. She then took out a small bowl from her bag, a grinding stone, and her water container. She poured some water into the bowl, then took the plant's leaves and chewed them in her mouth lightly. Once they were ready, she put them into the bowl and mashed them in with the water. When finished, she took some onto her fingers and applied them to her different wounds and scratches, then finally to her arrow wound.

She then removed the second arrow, and applied the substance to it. Finally, she took out a long cloth and bandaged the arm. "There," she said finally after the treatment. "I hope that will do..."

As Nen finished bandaging her arm, Verya stood up and moved her arm around, testing it. She winced slightly, and pulled out another vial of liquid from her pack and drank it.

"Hannon le." she then said to Nen. She picked up her sword and sheathed it, and retrieved her bow from where she dropped it. Pulling her long robe on, she took Morevana's reins, picked up Narwa, mounted, and then said to the others, "Where ar you planning on going now?"

Verya tested her newly bandaged arm, then rose and thanked Nénuninquë. She then mounted her horse Morevana, and asked, "Where are you planning on going now?"

"I was merely wandering," said Nénuninquë timidly. "I am here visiting with my family. I know not where they are now, though, as I do not know where I myself am..." she said, looking sheepishly about at Brannon and Anariel.

Smiling slightly, Verya said, "You are near the eastern border of Mirkwood now. The palace is about a day and a half's ride from here. I will escort you there, if you wish."

"Yes I was." He replied. "I was planning on returning with my company, but can just as easily go with you both if you would like." Traveling by foot would take longer, but it also meant that he had more chance of taking game home to the halls. As the hunting group had long since rode off Brannon had little hope of catching up with them, so it would be common sense to travel with these women especially as one of them may later need help returning to the palace as she was still injured. He smiled and stood up, wondering if they would be leaving that instant.

Smiling, Verya then said, "Very well. We shall leave immediately, so we can reach the palace by tomorrow afternoon." She turned Morevana towards the path and waited for Brannon and Neuninque.

Nénuninquë moved toward the path, putting her bag over her shoulder and fixing her belt, which had been knocked askew after she fell down the hill [and the sheathes were scratching her hip, anyway...] and followed Verya, who was mounted on her horse. She started down the path, sheepish, unconfident, and uncertain of herself around these amazing strangers. Quietly following Brannon and Verya, she began to think to herself as she passed through the beautiful trees of the wood.

As Brannon and Nenuninque followed her, Verya realized how happy she was to be in the company of other elves again. She watched the trees as they passed, keeping watch out for possible signs of orc bands roaming the forest. Softly, she began to sing to herself, and she found herself watching Brannon from the corner of her eye.

{ BTW, Nénuninquë's in the DB now...}

Though content, Nénuninquë, being the sweet clumsy Elf-youth she was, tripped over a tree root and splat onto the moist, soily ground. She raised her face to the other Elves, red as a rose.

((Aaagh! I forgot i posted! *slaps forhead* I'll try and catch up!!))

Anariel wiped her blades clean and slid them back in their scabbards. She then let out a sharp whistle and a large, white stallion cantered to her, shaking his long grey mane.

"Suilaid, Arod mellon nin..." muttered Anariel softly as she ran her hand through the horse's mane and swung lightly into the saddle, "I have missed this place...my home..." she thought aloud.

Chaos flew down and landed on the elf/ranger's shoulder once again, and Felarof stood by Arod with Anariel upon the great horse's back.

"Near the palace, you say?" said Anariel in slight surprise,"I did not think I came that far, but, low and behold!" she said with a laugh.

Had the singing gone on longer then Brannon probably would have joined in. But it was cut short when Nénuninquë managed to fall over over a root. Brannon had decided that she was generally clumsy by nature, and he stopped walking and turned back to help her with Verya.
"I think I remember going through a clumsy stage too," Brannon added to make Nénuninquë feel better and less embarrassed. The truth was he couldn't ever remember being clumsy (even if he probably was), and it seemed to work for she was now up right and her usual colour.

Once Nenuninque was standing up again, Verya walked beak over to Morevana and grabbed her reins and began to lead her on the path again. As the small company continued their trek through the trees, Verya began to sing again, still watching the surrounding trees for signs of movement.

Nénuninquë, having thoroughly embarrassed herself in front of her kin, walked a bit off to the side of the woodland path, and uttered not a word. The lovely singing of Verya was merely a background sound and offered her little comfort. She looked away to the trees that stretched abroad, and wished she could run away, like the wind that blows freely through the trees and over the grasses of the plains, through canyons and over mountain peaks. She wished and imagined that she could fly like the wind, and daydreamed of adventure. She brushed her hand along the barks of trees as she passed, and felt the occasional breeze blow gently through her hair.
