There's so much shallow dross seeping out of Hollywood these days that it's hard to find the good stuff. Another example of the 'swamping' phenomenon. Any recommended films anyone?
Here's two for now-
Dean Spanley I've just seen this and it's a delightful little diversion, but then I'm a big Dunsany fan.
Dead Man - Jim Jarmusch film with Jonny Depp. Great soundtrack by Neil Young.

I agree with you - Hollywood isn't what it used to be.

One film I liked was Amazing Grace. I also liked The King's Speech.

'The King's Speech' is a really great film. I didn't expect to like it, but I ended up really enjoying it. Another one I didn't expect to like was 'Avatar' but again it's actually really good. It's long, so stick with it, but in the end I think you'd be glad you watched it.

Inception, a.k.a. the only reason that Christopher Nolan made the Batman movies. Fantastic film, as I would expect of him.

I should poke the forums more often.

Go watch Hugo! It's a beautiful movie that I feel isn't being given enough attention. It deserved the awards it got.

I thought John Carter of Mars was pretty good but maybe that's because I've read the books? I heard it bombed. Very sad, I thought it was a good movie.

Inglorious Basterds, if only to watch the incredible performance of Christoph Walz in the opening scene. I've never seen someone so charmingly ruthless and evil. I was riveted everytime he came on screen. He deserved the Oscar he won.

If you're into dance, or even if you're not-
Pina by Wim Wenders. A beautiful tribute to Pina Bausch.

I want to see the new PT Anderson film, The Master but it's not on anywhere round here. One of my favourite films of all time is his Magnolia, and There Will Be Blood is good too.

Song of Norway is amazing. It's a really old one, but it's really beautiful. The opening is the best music/landscape scene work I have ever seen. Every single shot fits the musical phrase perfectly.

I'm telling all of you right now that The Village is a wonderful, wonderful movie that is sorely underrated! It's a little bit old (2001, I think. I know that wasn't too long ago but you kind of feel it in this one) but the story is great! If you like suspense and romance I would definitely give it a go!

I have been watching trailers for Iron Man 3 and they all look so sad, like everything is going to go wrong for him. It will be a miracle if this film does not come with a major loss.
I also am super excited about Thor 2 and Captain America 2.
I heard that in Captain America 2 Roger's close friend that died in the train scene of the first one will be the enemy. He apparently will blame Roger for his death.
I can't wait to see Loki in Thor 2! I know he is the bad guy, but I really like him.

I would recommend the following movies: Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, The Ten Commandments, The Lion King, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Elizabethtown, for starters.

^^ Those are AWESOME movies!!!

A REALLY good movie is The Matrix! It's my new FAVORITE!!! Just make sure you wait to watch it when you're 18! It's kinda graphic and there a bit of language. Still, it's AMAZING!!!

New favorite? O.O You've only seen it now? Oh, you waited to be 18 to watch it?
The Matrix is pretty awesome, but the sequels kind of ruined it.

One movie I recommend [if you are patient, because some people think it too long] is Cloud Atlas. I thought it was amazing! In many aspects. The actors, the production, the story...

One of my absolutely top favorite movies and the No. 1 top western of all time for me is “Once upon a time in the West”.
<sarcasm on>
Though I wonder how younger viewers (born post 1980? post 1990?) get through some parts (the beginning, for example) without going crazy. Are there shortened (halved?) versions for the three-minute-attention-span crowd?

The Matrix is indeed a classic. It's an amalgam of a lot of science fiction stories, notably Asimov's one about Multivac, a computer which is given the task of making people happy. It does this by putting everyone to sleep and feeding them nice dreams.

Cloud Atlas. I want to read the book first.

Once Upon.... Excellent. I'm looking to get the remastered version of Heaven's Gate before I could say which is No. 1.
