*arrives just in time to see Lord Arveleg land on the floor, without spilling a drop of his coffee*

"Good Lord, my Lord, I'm most impressed with your agility. The coffee must be particularly good."

*walks over and pours herself a cup, and snags a cookie*

"The dog and I had a good walk. He managed to water everything along the way, and managed to step in every bit of mud on the path. Hopefully, things will dry out soon."

*sits down and takes a sip of her coffee*

"How are things with everybody? A wee birdie told me, my Lord, that you've replaced your beloved Nissan with something new(er?). What did you decide to buy?"

Aye... yes, the 'Silver Bullet', as my old Nssan was called, has come to its end of life. I used it today to drive about a km to the bus stop when I went into the city to get the bank check for the new car. The left CV joint has the 'wobblies' as the ball-cage has broke. It isn't safe to drive really. I would have walked to the bus stop but I was going to be packing stuff back from the city and didn't want to walk home with it all.

The new one is a 2016 Holden (Chevy) Trax. It's a bit small to be an SUV, a bit big to be a hatchback, and is called a 'wagon' on the registration. We call it 'The Nugget'. Pick it up from the dealer tomorrow afternoon.

Arveleg stands up as he finished his coffee, and gets the Pico de Gallo he made earlier along with some very lightly salted corn chips for the munchie table.

*walks into the Inn and looks around*

"Boy, things have been quiet here since the New Year. I was busy shovelling snow off my driveway in January, an unusual event at home. I don't know why time flies so quickly but February came and went with barely a notice."

*walks over to the counter and gets a fresh cup of coffee*

"I'm sure looking forward to Spring. My walking partner and her dog will be back from Arizona on Friday so I the dog and I will definitely get out more."

*sits down and takes a sip of the hot coffee*

"How is everybody surviving these days?"

"Right! Weekend! Can I get an ale over here? That Green Dragon Red will do nicely!"

Arveleg realizes there is no serving maids so he gets up and taps one himself. He sits back down and says

"To the Weekend! Skoal!"

He takes a healthy chug off his tankard.

It tasted good, and he took the empty to the bar counter and sat it down. "Thanks Much! Good ale Now.... I have a date with the lovely Queen Arwen!"

Arveleg gives everyone a wave as he pushed open the door.

My, it has been quite some time since I have been to the inn!

Would anyone like some freshly-baked banana chocolate muffins? They are delicious!

Elfmaiden sips some tea, as ale is not her favorite beverage.

*wanders in*

My word this place has been quiet recently! I wonder where everybody is?

*goes over to coffeemaker, and takes it back to the kitchen for a good cleaning, singing while she scrubs it out*

This machine is ready to go now. I think I'll make a nice French dark roast cup. I wonder if anyone else will pop in for a cup? It would be nice to catch up.

Finally! I have been able to make a return to CoE! How are all my fellow council members?

I feel like it's been almost half a year since I saw you all last!

*wanders over to the coffee machine to enjoy a nice beverage*

Well, I have a good chunk of news for everyone, since I last posted here. I'm very well settled into my new job. This hospital is far nicer than my last, and I've made a good group of friends there. I'm also now a proud car owner I drove myself to work for the first time today, and I feel so free and properly independent! Maybe I should have bitten the bullet and passed my driving test 7 years ago, like I was meant to...

As for why my absence has been so long, I unfortunately lost one of my grandfathers, who had been battling with 3 cancers for 10 years (I say one of my grandfathers as due to re-marriages, I once had a grand total of 4, but now only have 1.) It was a difficult time, and I switched off for a while to cope. But I'm back on form once more!

What else... Oh, I'm almost ready to move into my new house! It's been one heck of a year, this 2017.

How is everyone else doing?

Congratulations on the new job, driver’s license and car, ilde! And my condolences about your grandfather (my last grandparent died 27 years ago …).

If it has been anything near half a year since your last presence here, then my early retirement as of 01 May 2017 would be news to you. In contrast to what may be an urban legend about retirees here in Germany, I definitely have more free time than before (UL states that the retirees suddenly have less time, because they are catching up on all the things they put off until retirement, or babble of the sort). Since my sleep (especially since we are having one spell of drought after another here, about two weeks at a time, punctuated by maximum alert on forest fire danger levels, luckily so far literally dampened by desperately needed rain each time), I do not have the slightest inclination to fill my calendar with useless activity. Put another way, I do not really have a bucket list, with the vague exception of Middle-earth (aka New Zealand).

Well...hello everyone. It's been a while since I've been on this site, but I've been longing for some interaction with the Tolkien fandom so I decided to pop in here and see if anyone is still here. =(

Hi starofdunedain, welcome back!

Besides some activity in the languages forum, the Games Forum and the Realm of Vairë are the most active parts of CoE (with a fair amount of overlap in the active users of those parts). But since I joined CoE in November 2013, participation has certainly gone downhill, with life changes (school, college, jobs, …) decimating the ranks of the younger users, as far as I can tell.

Hi Starry! Nice to have you drop by the Inn. Things have been pretty quiet around here for the past year. I pop in now and again.

The summer has been busy for me between gardening, walking the dog, and various other projects, the summer months have flown by and now we are having cool mornings with autumn's edge to make us think the seasons will change soon. Hopefully, things will slow down somewhat so socialising can become a more regular event.

*walks to coffeemaker, selects a pod, and makes a cup of coffee*

This machine makes wonderful coffee! You can also use it to make tea or chocolate. And there are muffins and cookies in the tins. Somebody is always baking and leaving goodies for those of us who drop in.

So, how are things?

Star of Dunedain! Good to see you again! I believe we met in the 'Washingtonians' thread back several years. I'm mostly at other Tolkien places these days, but drop in here on occasion to check messages and catch up with old friends.

*spurns the ecologically crappy coffee pods in favour of the French Press*

What!!!?? *grumbles* Probably turning the place into a retro wine bar. I wonder if we can put a stop to this travesty? A petition perhaps? C'mon people! They're trying to destroy the ambience of our Green Dragon!

"Greetings, gentlemen. I see they're "revitalising" the place again. The last time it happened they just painted the walls, and had the floors refinished. It looks a bit more serious this time. I certainly hope they don't destroy the character of the place."

*walks to the counter and gets a cup of coffee and some biscuits*

"Thanks, Rosie."

* returns with them and sits down*

"I wonder what they're planning on using the space where the snug was for?"

*looks at Gando and laughs*

"We seem to be expanding your British vocabulary these days. First it was "dab hand" and now "snug".

I'll give you the Wiki version:
The "snug", sometimes called the smoke room, was typically a small, very private room with access to the bar that had a frosted glass external window, set above head height. A higher price was paid for beer in the snug and nobody could look in and see the drinkers. It was not only the wealthy visitors who would use these rooms. The snug was for patrons who preferred not to be seen in the public bar. Ladies would often enjoy a private drink in the snug in a time when it was frowned upon for women to be in a pub. The local police officer might nip in for a quiet pint, the parish priest for his evening whiskey, or lovers for a rendezvous.

Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have surveyed the 50,000 pubs in Britain and they believe that there are very few pubs that still have classic snugs. These are on a historic interiors list in order that they can be preserved.
The snug was a lovely tradition actually, and a quiet place for courting couples to go for a drink. They were still common when I travelled to the Great Britain and Ireland in the late 60' and 70's. I suspect the advent of the 70's feminist movement sounded their final death knell.

It was the general decline of pubs that pushed landlords and companies to focus more on food. The spaces were opened out to get more tables in. I do still come across traditional pubs on my travels with separate rooms, maybe a little library, dingy decor and a welcome lack of muzak and giant TV screens. I've just remembered one place that had tried to update by putting four huge abstract paintings up. I nearly choked when I realized they were all the same stock picture, just rotated a quarter turn. I finished my drink and left.

Here's what the Prancing Pony was like:
He led them a short way down a passage, and opened a door. ‘Here is a nice little parlour!’ he said.

They found themselves in a small and cosy room. There was a bit of bright fire burning on the hearth, and in front of it were some low and comfortable chairs

So for layout of this CoE Prancing Pony, you take the “real Middle-erth” layout to be found in Karen Wynn Fonstad’s 1992 update of her original 1981 “Atlas of Middle-earth”, on page 125, which has both a ground plan and a cutaway view? Okaaaaay ...

What reason can there be to enlarge the Common Room? To be honest, I certainly cannot think of one. But then, other rooms could be converted to the snug, like the room right next to the – now – former snug. Hmm … are they by any chance thinking of importing that new-fashioned table game from New Lake-town, the one played with long, thin, tapering wooden sticks an balls carved from the bones of that Dragon what’s-his-name, the one Mad Baggins claims to have been involved in killing decades ago? A very odd table it is, with holes in the four corners and two in the middle sides, and a very odd game, can’t for the life of me see what people find enjoyable in it! *Notices his beer receptacle is empty and shuffles over to the kitchen to get a refill (and life will imitate “art" here! )*

P.S. Prost (or cheers, in a pub)Image

The new game sounds interesting. I wonder if we could insist they keep the snug, and install the odd table you've describe in there? What say you, fellows?

Has this strange game been given a name yet? I mean, if we’re to sacrifice our current snug for it, maybe we should give it a name memorializing our sacrifice? Like ... hmmmmm ... snugger? Eh – name may need some work ...

They have a snooker table in Meduseld. The rumour is that King Thoeden does not like being beaten and tends to go into a tantrum, so there is an unwritten rule Let the King win.

Whoa, slow down, my head’s spinning! They play this New Lake Town game in … Rohan? And the Gaffer knows what the game is called in Rohan?? Give me a break, the Gaffer couldn’t find his way to the Prancing Pony, never mind Rohan or New Lake Town! And about snooker, does this mean that what we call the snug, they – whoever, wherever - call a snook? And that these tables are set up in snooks, which you have to give up to play the game … I think you’ve seriously lost me just now …

I suppose you are right Gandolorin, the Gaffer can only find his way to the pantry. Perhaps he has a pen pale. I think it's my turn for a round of ale would you like a pint?

Into the pantry, probably; out of the pantry … meh!

Ah, yeah, I’ll have a pint. But if I spill more that I manage to drink, my dizzy spell has not subsided enough yet. Then I’d better take a tea with a straw or something of the sort. *shakes head vigorously*

L_S, o’l man, I find your comparison of Rosie with your namesake to be seriously inappropriate! The Maia dude was probably never on Sam’s mind in the entire quest, helping Frodo and foiling Gollum was about the range of his duties as he saw them. With no One Ring Quest, Sam would have asked Rosie much earlier – but the basic Sam would not have changed much, except for mileage. The least changed, in core being, of the four Fellowship Hobbits; expanded in wisdom, yes, but not fundamentally changed.

*Bundles in from the cold, carrying a mass amount of gifts and goodies*

Hello All! I have finally returned now that I can login once again! It feels like it has been months since I spoke with you all!

I hope all my fellow council members are well and thriving? Has anyone any news since my last visit?

I myself have finally moved into my new home, alas the heating is not working, nor do I have a working hob, and there is plenty of unpacking still to be done, however I am in the house. Which means I can marathon LotR to my heart's desire on television

IIldë! Welcome back! We've missed you. I glad to hear you're happy in your new house, although not having any heating, with winter coming on, will be a bit of a bummer. As for your hob not working, you can always get a camp stove. LOL

Here, let me take some of those parcels from you. Grab a seat, and I'll grab us some coffees, or would you prefer tea? The selection has improved since you were last here.
