O is for Otherworld, the poetic name used by Bilbo in his Song of Eärendil, referring to the lands of Aman beyond the Great Sea. Since the Downfall of Númenor in the late Second Age, these lands had been taken away from the mortal world, and could no longer be reached by ship, except to those permitted to the travel the Straight Road. To mortals, then, the lands of the distant West belonged to a different world, hence the name 'Otherworld'.

Ulmo sent him as messenger to Turgon in Gondolin. Dwelling there, he wedded Turgon's daughter Idril, who gave birth to Eärendil. After the Fall of Gondolin, he dwelt with the Exiles at the Mouths of Sirion for a time, but feeling old age coming upon him, he built the great ship Eärrámë and sailed into the West with Idril.
