I would like to draw attention to this part of ES's submission rules: "however if you are "deviating from the usual", please advise the other players." I think quotes from materials other than LOTR, TH, Silm and UT should be marked as such when a new hangman is posted, for those of us who don't have the non-MiddleEarth books. So that we don't wreck our brains trying to solve something we can't know.

E~S mentions TH, LoTR, Sil and LETTERS??? And MOVIES??? That would be very much less than M-e, which would include UT, HoME, TCoH and B&L. Personally, I’m hopeless on movies. Letters also has very much non-M-e stuff in it. If at all, if we do quotes from UT, HoMe, TCoH and B&L, we should explicitly state which book we mean. For HoMe, which volume. “Lost Road” and “Notion Club Papers” are also quite a bit wide of M-e. Or maybe we should stick to TH, LoTR, Sil. The canaon, sort of. Roughly 2,000 pages, should be enough?

Parts of some volumes of HoME are about serious professional philology (of Elven languages, so much the worse ). I have no idea who besides our language sage dirk_math would have a snowball’s chance in Angband in solving such riddles. And besides, even E~S owns a single-volume edition of LoTR lacking Appendices (one has to be able to hold a book to read it, a threshold which this edition might have crossed if including appendices – dunno … ). And just off the cuff, I thing I would go crackers if the quote searched for were from “Letters”! We can try to pose mind-benders to each other (it has happened, and I’m not guilty of posing nearly all of them!), but then participation could very well nose-dive. Falling participation is something I definitely do not wish for in this to me eminently lovable site.

@ Gando - I believe the key there is the word 'usual', the 'usual' choices being what most folks know: the TH/LOTR movies & books, the Silm and possibly UT. And I wouldn't worry about failing participation; all Tolkien sites are experiencing it now. But just wait when a new surge of interest in JRRT comes, which may not be all that far away...
