Where Do Dragons Come From?

Smaug, the   Dragon that terrorized The Lonely Mountain,  is one of the most heavily anticipated characters that will  be brought to the screen  in the upcoming `The Hobbit` trilogy. Dragons like Smaug have a been part of our culture and literature for centuries, but where did these mythical creatures come from?
