Happy Birthday Alan Lee & John Howe!

Yesterday, August 20th, was conceptual designer and Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee’s birthday, and today, August 21st, is the birthday of fellow artist and conceptual designer John Howe. Alan was born on August 20th, 1947 in London, England and John was born on August 21st, 1957 in Vancouver, Canada. That makes them 57 and 47 respectively. Two New Sections for CoE!

The Council is pleased to announce the addition of two new sections to the site: The brand new Tolkien Section has everything you could want to know about Tolkien, including an in-depth biography, articles, bibliography, and lots of other great stuff devoted to the man who invented Middle-Earth.

In addition, we have also recently implemented a News Calendar in which news events, cast birthdays, and other things of timely interest will be listed. This calendar can be found under the News sub-menu.

If for some reason you can not see either of these new sections, please empty your browser’s temporary internet files.

John Noble was born on 20th August 1948 in Port Pirie, Australia and is 56 today. You can see some pictures in CoE’s gallery of John in the role of Denethor here.

Lord of the Rings graphics win medal

The New Zealand design and printing company Admark have been awarded a silver medal for their LotR graphics that appeared on Air New Zealand Boeing 747s. You can read the full story at nzherald.co.nz

Lord of the law suits

Reuters.com report that Saul Zaentz has sued New Line Cinema. Saul Zaentz, who purchased the rights to JRR Tolkien’s works in the 1970’s, claims that New Line owe him over $20 million in unpaid royalties from the LotR movies.

Ring*Con 2004

Ring*Con 2004, a Lord of the Rings convention, is being held in Bonn, Germany from 29th to 31st October. Guests confirmed so far include; Karl Urban, John Noble, Craig Parker and Billy Boyd. There are further details at ringcon.de and details about Billy’s appearance at billyboyd.net .

Lord of the Rings concert with Christopher Lee

On 9th September, The Netherlands Theatre Orchestra with Christopher Lee, will present a programme of music from LotR. This will include works by Howard Shore, Johan de Meij and Caspar Reiff. The performance will be held at The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Tickets can be ordered online here.

Sean Astin’s book: An Actor’s Tale

Sean Astin’s book, “There and Back Again, An Actor’s Tale, comes out in October. He will be doing a book signing publicity tour that starts on October 13, in NYC, New York. You can see details about the book signing venues at Barnes & Noble. Details about the book can also be found there and at Amazon.

Note: For those in the UK, the book is published there a month earlier than in America, on 9th September.
