Northern Waste
The bitterly cold, almost barren region found to the north of the Grey Mountains. The Northern Waste was the surviving remnant of the Regions of Everlasting Cold (Dor Daidelos) found north of the Iron Mountains (Ered Engrin) of the First Age.
After the destruction of Thangorodrim and the sinking of Beleriand, many of the surviving Dragons fled to the Northern Waste and bided their time there. It was some of these Dragons, led by Scatha that drove the dwarves from their homes in the Grey Mountains in the 20th century of the Third Age and again in TA 2570 . The great dragon Smaug , who drove the dwarves from the Lonely Mountain in TA 2770 also came from the Northern Waste.
At the time of the War of the Ring, the only other inhabitants of the Northern Waste were the Lossoth living in the area around the Ice Bay of Forochel.
