The turnabout in Feanor's life likely happened with his father remarrying. He likely already felt guilt over the passing of his mother; due to his birth, and having his father find then a new spouse, knowing that his mothers fea would then be alone for eternity, was just too much for him.
If there ever was a 'good' side to him, it died with his mother and for the rest of his existence he was a selfish, egotistical troublemaker.
