Post What is the translation of your (Elvish) screen name?

I've noticed many members have names right out of Tolkien's works. Being a beginner at understanding Elvish but a lazy, curious person I'd like to know what your name means; Elvish, Dwarvish, whatever.

UPDATE: Some of you use other names in PR forums and stuff. Or you have other characters you speak for. Why not include THEM here? This is getting to be very educational! HANNON LE!!

I guess I should start this with MY name: Mith- is silver (of course) and -elril can mean star (bright star, according to my source). So I am "Silver Star."
And you are????

Alright, I'm boring and cliché when it comes to my name. Lorien is short for Lothlorien since I'm a hopeless tree-hugger and loved the mallorn trees from the books. Greenleaf because its Leggy's last name. So...my name really doesn't have a meaning. Its simply a combination of my favorite things from LotR.

Narulothwen means "red flower maiden" literally. It was given to a red-headed hobbit girl (ME!) by the elves of Rivendell, who couldn't be content with the plain "May Gamgee" her parents gave her. It's all part of my background story which is scattered in several steno books right now. We have a lot of color names here! Thanks for this thread, Mith.

Lorien, did you know:
Lórien (from lor- "dream" probably just an Elvish "element" rather than a complete word)) name of a Vala, properly the place where he dwells, while his real name is Irmo (WJ:402)
That's from a Quenya dictionary in my files. I never thought to look before! And Greenleaf is just the translation of "Legolas" as is Lasgalen, so your "last" name is already translated!

Ithiahir, in English & Hebrew that name would be Michael or Michelle. The REAL you?

I entered my real name "Mary-anne"in the elvish names database but that one wasn't in there so I entered "Maryann" which means: bitter beauty. Sindarin: Saervain; fem. Saervaineth, Saervainiel, Saervainien, Saervainwen

Andowen actually came from a name that the Barrow-downs name generator threw out at me, I just sort of edited it a bit.

Up until recently I didn't think that it had a meaning, I'd looked up the Sindarin dictionary but there was nothing there, then I got a book which had the word ando in it, so I figured I'll look up the Quenyan meaning for it, and sure enough, Ando = gate, plus with the wen on the end, giving it it's femininity.

I like to think of it as meaning Gate Maiden.

My actually Elvish name would be Gwenneth or Rodwen, but my name meaning is incredibly common, so I stuck with the one no one else has

Mine is not really a 'name' but a Quenya phrase, loosely 'to sail on foaming waves' since I teach windsurfing.

Thanks, Naru! Yeah, I knew Lorien was also the name of the gardens and dwelling-place of the Vala Irmo. I actually chose it for that reason as well, after reading the Sil. Never knew, though, that "Lor" meant dream. Very cool indeed.

my user name is a translation of a username I use on several other sites in various combinations-
Tarí=queen
-iel= suffix meaning daughter/daughter of
so I did Tarí+iel, quenya does not tolerate the same vowel repeated so =Tariel.
I know there's another Quenya word for princess, but I figured a name could be more root-y and archaic/weird, so I made up Tariel. Full name would be Tariel Elenion, very loosly, star princess/ I get to be like ëarendil- like frodo speaking in tongues in shelob's lair--"Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!"

This is wierd, but I created my screen name and after some time I realised that I had an error in it.

Velian - supposedly to sound like "veil"
Elgal - supposedly to be "esgal" which is veil in Sindarin

But I like my name anyways.

Have you aver checked to see if what you have IS translatable? I'm a curious critter!

Angloth, we may be related! I saw your new sig bar & as mine states, I am also of the Noldor! (& I'm hearing Pippin in my head giving his family connection to Frodo )

Caradhriel & Narulothwen have completely different names but with similar meanings & for the same reason!
I notice a lot of stars in names, too. Could be the Elvish influence?

How? I'd start with the Language section right here @ CoE! Start with the first bit of your name & run it thru the dictionaries! Can't wait to see what you find.

I decided what I wanted my elvish name to mean & looked up the words for RED (naru is one possible word) & HEAD (loth can mean a head of small flowers, like a bouquet) & added a feminine ending (-wen).

I suppose my name is Quenya then...

"minya" means first
"isil" means moon
and we have the "ien" ending meaning maiden

Linnende is my name in Quenya, but I'm not entirely sure how to translate it. I think that:

last part-nende means "watery, pool/lake"

But I'm not sure what the first part means...

lin can mean "many" which would make your name "many lakes" or it could mean "song" making it "lake of songs"

Thank you very much!! I have a question though, when you look up a name in the Language section do you just break the name up into pieces to find out what they mean?

Funness! Of course...to be REALLY related, you'd have to be of the same house. Which House are you? I'm House of Feanor! (reason for his banner in my sig lol)

Other names... wow I use a lot!!

Ainariel is another favourite of mine-which means "Holy Maiden"

Someone at my school calls me Vanawen- "Fair maiden"

lol I use Laiquessia on a few usernames, however I made that up before I really got the hang of elvish. I got "quendi" and "quessi" mixed up. Thought I was getting "Green Elf" and ended up with "green feather" lol! Oh well, it fits! I'm rather feather-brained so....

NPCs, huh? I'd like to introduce Hannastirn, my husband of nearly a year! We were married in the old Potbelly Pony Pub RP in non-Tolkien, back when it was still Strider's Corner, on March 15th, the day of the Battle of Pelennor.

His name means understanding (hannas) watcher (tirn). He was a ranger who patrolled the Shires borders. Any wonder he wound up marrying a hobbit?

Ok, confusion time! Angloth is now Macilwen??? And still of the Noldor?
I am Mithelril, son of Angrod, son of Finarfin, son of Finwë. So we are distant kin. You MUST be an elf, with all those aliases! Almost as bad as Aragorn!

Tyrhael means "Powers (of the) Wise" in Sindarin.
I also use Akhâsazê and Akhâsada, which are Adûnaic for With the Void and Into the Void, respectively.
My Quenya name is Arcormacolindo, Noble Ringbearer.
