Post Of Elven Halls: Shield of Imladris
on: November 16, 2004 10:55
Very scripted thread, please see OOC and PM me to join

“The best elven wine is that of my fathers halls” Elladan comments.

“Nay!” Finduilas contradicts “In those of Thranduil they serve finer”

“And you dare speaketh that name?” Elrohir asks, angered.

“Aye” Finduilas says, “I do”

The twins reach for their swords.

“So quick you are to draw weapons” Erestor says quietly ‘Do you forget that the Lady sits yonder, and wishes not for bloodshed?”

Elladan and Elrohir sigh, willing to calm their tempers for their sister’s sake.

Finduilas smiles, sipping her wine.

“I do not excuse your behavior, Finduilas” Erestor tells her “’Twas you who began this, for your tongue is as sharp as any weapon”

Finduilas’ expression does not change, and the four are silenced, the sounds of the feast around them.

“Dwarven manners are near nonexistent” Elladan notes suddenly “Even the proud Thorin Oakenshield uses his beard as a linen”

“Aye, ‘tis amusing to watch” Erestor agrees.

“My young days were spent amongst their kind” Finduilas defends “’Tis considered proper to them!”

Elladan and Elrohir laugh. “An elf-child with dwarves for playmates! ‘Tis amazing your actions are that of your own kin!” Elrohir exclaims.

“The beauties of Eregion are still treasured” Erestor points out.

“Aye, but some are cursed, save Nenya, Vilya, and Narya” Finduilas says quietly.

Again they fall silent.

“Is anything known of the Red Ring?” Elrohir asks, and he, Elladan, and Finduilas look at Erestor expectantly.

“Elrond may know, but I do not” Erestor tells them.

“Perhaps the Library holds answers” Finduilas says.

“Perhaps. But we will find such a search more enjoyable once we have eaten” Erestor states “A feast is meant to be enjoyed. ‘Tis not often we have visitors of the Naugrim and or the Periannath!”

"I would have expected better from the sons of Lord Elrond than to quarrel over the quality of wine and where it is brewed." Ereinion comments as he slowly walks in. "Erestor it good to see you again and yourself also Finduilas." He bows as he addresses his friends. "So do I hear you talk of the red ring?" He asks. They look up at him wondering if he might have any news of it. "Don't look at me for any revelations to where it lays, I know only as much as you do. I've heard of it being talked about but never any rumour as to its where about or if it still exists. I would be glad to join you in searching through Lord Elrond's library for any word of it. If any word of it is written then this would be the place to find it."

"But first we must feast, for it is as Erestor says" "we will find such a search more enjoyable once we have eaten." "We would not want to neglect your fathers guests on this special occasion." Ereinion says as he turns and looks toward the dinner hall.

As the others continue talking, Finduilas falls silent, watching the dwarves with a mournful expression on her face.

Erestor is quick to notice. "You see it, don't you? More vividly than the waking world"

Finduilas nods, and a tear, though swiftly wiped away, leaves its silver path on her cheek. "Kel and Gemil and Faydar, with their axes, they looked so helpless, yet so brave. And Yini, trying to rescue the children. Haldir and Silmarien, who had lived through the wars of the past, their face shining with the Light of Valinor. Lost, all of them"

"While the scars of the past never heal, they teach, and remind" Erestor says to her quietly.

"What they have taught I do not see" Finduilas whispers.

"You will, with time" Ereinion tells her.

"He is right" Erestor adds.

"We have all seen much" Elrohir says.

"Aye" Elladan agrees "But that has shaped us into who we are'

"And the shaping continues until we Sail away" Finduilas finishes "Or find ourselves in the halls of Ma-"

"Such morbid talk for a feast!" Erestor interupts "This, also, belongs in the Library!"

Linwe hesitates thoughtfully at the thresehold sensing some simmering bout of moribdness beneath the bright marred smiles. Biting her lip she shrugs strides forwards and offers a willowy bow of her dark head.

" ah greetings! alas i see i have missed alittle of the feast - i was out riding" she adds quickly noting thier curious glances.

" i know, i know - i should have been here no time" but she pleads persuasively " the elements stir one's emotions better then any food could fill a hungry stomach. Ea needed the exercise anyway " she smiled looking to the twins with a mischevious smile

" Come now you will vouch for me!" beaming resplendantly about the group she settles herself nearest Findulas and offers an warmly earnest smile.

" Does everything go well with you? All of you? she directs about the group

"Linwe, slow down" Erestor tells the elleth.

Linwe blushes.

"We are well" the twins say at the same time.

"I am also" Finduilas adds.

Ereinion nods as an answer, his mouth being busy swallowing the last drop of his wine.

"Fine enough" Erestor finishes, shrugging slightly.

"Only fine?" Linwe questions.

"Aye, only fine" Erestor replies "But my ailment is not that of a wound nor sadness, but rather longing"

The others exchange puzzled glances, then look at Erestor. But recieve an explanation they do not, and his bizarre answer is soon forgotten.

Arradianna entered shortly after Linwe and directed a smile towards her. She wore her dark traveling clothes, in contrast with her pale skin and hair.
"Greetings!" she said and took a seat near the twins, "I must admit, there seems to be a dark mood lurking about. This is no good for a feast. So I suggest we let the men brag about their exploits while we women prove better."
Arrad looked at Linwe with an almost-wink.

The dark mood had seemed to spread to everyone and even the two arrivals seemed to feel it in the air. The ladies are right that this is no way to begin a feast Ereinion thought to himself

"We have allowed ourselves to drift into a state of near melancholy. We must be a dreadful sight indeed sitting here with such mournful expressions on our faces. Well I will not spend the night sitting here with fine foods wine and music beckoning us. And what of our search in the library, shall that to fall victim to our mood? What has been said is said and now be done with it my friends."

Ereinion moves his chair back and stands. "May I escort one of you beautiful ladies to dinner?" He asks holding his arm out for one of them to take.

It was hot and noisy in the smithy. The sound of clashing metal and vapour when a hot point of a sword was put into a bown of cold water were the most pleasing sounds for Caimallen's ears. He took the blade closer to his eyes. Almost ready. Putting it back in the red mouth of the oven he continued to sing a long and beautiful song about sunlit hills of Beleriand he had been singing. Sometimes he longed to have lived at those tomes, to have seen Beleriand, all those magnificent realms of old. Of course, before the wars and destruction, he hated wars... But now they were on the edge of another one. So Lord Elrond had said, and this was the reason he was forging swords. Swords that would warn their masters about orcs nearby with a blue glow...

"The hidden city of Gondolin,
A jewel ruled by the Turgon King..." his voice rose strong and beautiful.

Suddenly the door was thrust open and a gust of cool wind rushed inside.

"Mallen! We had to be in the Hall already! What are you still doing here?" his brother's blonde head poked in.

"I'll be right there... in a couple of minutes. I need to finish this one..." Caimallen wasn't pleased to be disturbed. He chose a small hammer and by fast still strong beats made the necessary corrections to the blade. He thrust it in the water again, then took a careful look at it. Perfect! Now all it needed was to be polished...

"Well?"

"I'm coming Calma!" Mallen took off his leather apron and headed for the exit. Calmathil sighed relieved.

"How much time is it until the beginning of the feast?" Mallen asked closing the door of the smithy.

"Well..." Calma avoided his brother's brown eyes. "The feast has begun already. " Then, noting the surprised expression on Mallen's face, Calma added quickly: "I just got lost in a wonderful poetry book I found. There are so beautiful verses there! Several poets speak about love and..."

"All right! All right!" Mallen lifted his hand to stop Calma. He couldn't help but laugh. "I should have known not to ask you to follow the time when you are going to the library. My fault. Are you ready?"

"Me? I guess," Calma shrugged. He was never too sure about wearing proper clothes, but it never bothered him, either. Mallen looked him up and down, then hesitantly nodded:
"That'll do. I have to change. Wait for me here!"

"Don't forget to wash yourself behind the ears!" Calma advised.

~~~
In only a couple of minutes Mallen was out again. He was wearing a black tunic with silver tresses now. His hear was still a bit messy, although Mallen had rewinded it. Without combing it, true.
The brothers entered the hall when the music was already playing and the guests were walking to the long table.
"See? We haven't missed a thing!" Calma smiled, then gave a gasp of surprise. "Mallen, look! It's Linwe! How come... Oh Eru! She is here!!!" in excitement, the young ellon's light grey eyes were sparkling.
Mallen smiled. "Go on!"
Calma ran to the long-lost friend, while Mallen remained standing, a confused expression on his face. He hadn't met anybody of LothLorien for almost thousand years, since he departed. He had always avoided the visitors from the place he once called home.
"Mallen?" somebody asked him with disbelief in her voice. Mallen lifted his gaze to meet the deep and wise eyes of Arradianna who was standing in front of him. Mallen took a deep breath to get himself back fromm his memories to the reality.
"My Lady," he bowed his head and smiled at her. "A long time since we met the last time."
"It is really so," she answered, still eyeing him closely.
"Should we go to the table?" Mallen asked, offering her his hand.
Frowning puzzled at Erestor's quzzical remark she shrugged, flinging back her hood and unbuttoning the clasp set at her throat. The pearly lighting caught the sheen of her skin whilst she entirely oblivious looked to maid who entered so radiantly.
Linwe exchanged a rueful wink with Arradianna emitting a light curling laugh.
" better we shall do! Women were borne for such things" she noted decisively brushing a lock of dark hair vacantly behind her ear until looking up at a fell voice through the air, a brazen joyous smile hung on her lips as she rose made a short bow and ran towards Calma stopping barely inches from a full frontal clash.
" Goodness your here! Calma i have not seen you for long - too long. What brings you here at such erratic notice - and your brother too" she noted warmly, settling her dark eyes, alight with inner fireworks on Calma's own. " Come" she motioned towards the table , resting her enat palm on his arm" are you hungary? There is much on display and all of it of the highest quality! Goodness Calma" she sighed again " what has kept you from my company for such an age?"
"I hope I am included in your offer" Finduilas says, laying her hand on Ereinion's arm.
Ereinion laughs. "Perhaps your mirrors decieve you, for I do not see why not"
Finduilas blushes prettily, and is about to say something when something well-aimed hits the back of her head.
A young boy of about ten stands behind her, his blue-gray eyes shining mischievously as he grins.
Finduilas narrows her eyes. "Estel!" she hisses. "Do you want me to tell Elrond you are being bad, in front of-" Finduilas stops, a wicked smile slithering across her lips "-the Lady Arwen?"
"Please don't!" Estel begs "I won't do it again!"
"You better not!" Finduilas says.
"I won't, I promise!" And with that, Estel hurries off to sit, hoping to be near the Lady.
"I think the boys love will be turned against him enough someday" Erestor reprimands, suddenly behind Finduilas.
"It won't last that long!" Finduilas laughs "He's but ten!"
"Aye, he is, but love that is true stands through the years" Erestor says.
"No child that young loves like that" Finduilas argues.
"Perhaps not, but what I say about love is not a lie" Erestor tells her.
Arradianna saw someone from the corner of her eye, but almost ignored it. She hadn't seen Mallen for years. She walked over to him skeptically.
"Mallen?" she asked.
It was him! It had been at least a thousand years, if not more. She took the hand offered her, excited to see an old friend. She saw Estel throw the small nut at Finduilas and the young child caught Arrad's chastisement as he retreated. She was among the few who knew of the child's lineage.
"Your skills as a smith will prove useful one day," she told him.
"Your skills as a smith will prove useful one day," she told him.
Mallen was leading Arrad to the table and, hearing her remark, frowned.
"I hope not... But I'm afraid you are right. I prefer making jewelry to weapons, but Lord Elrond believes that we have to be prepared for a war, so my forge has neglected the beauty and turned to blades instead."
He seated her gallantly at the table and took a place on her right.
" Goodness your here! Calma i have not seen you for long - too long. What brings you here at such erratic notice - and your brother too" she noted warmly, settling her dark eyes, alight with inner fireworks on Calma's own. " Come" she motioned towards the table , resting her enat palm on his arm" are you hungary? There is much on display and all of it of the highest quality! Goodness Calma" she sighed again " what has kept you from my company for such an age?"
Calma laughed warmly hearing Linwe talking and talking... She had always been so - when she talked, you could only wait for your turn. And he felt like... home?
"It HAS been a long time since I was in Lorien, yes. I have been living here, mostly, with Mallen." Calma watched Mallen leading Arrad towards the table and hurried to follow him. He had to get the places at Mallen's side!
"How have you been, Linwe? How are things in Lorien? Oh, I have missed it SO much! Please, do tell me everything!" he begged her, seating her beside Mallen.
Mallen rose to greet Linwe with a warm smile. He bowed politely.
"My Lady! It is a pleasure to meet you again!"
"Why can't the blades also be beautiful?" Arrad asked Mallen after he had seated her. "I'm sorry, Haldir has been rubbing off on me," she laughed.
Just then Linwe was seated on the other side of Mallen, along with Calma.
"Calma, I haven't seen you for a long time!" Arrad greeted Mallen's brother, "I don't believe Linwe will have much to tell you about Lorien. It is the same as always, peaceful and boring."
Hearing Arrad's remark on Lothlorien, Finduilas laughs.
"I've never heard anyone describe Lorien as boring" she says "And you are right, swords can have great beauty"
"Beauty, yes, but the deadly sort" Mallen replies gravely.
"What is love without danger?" Finduilas questions, a wicked gleam in her eye.
"Free of jealousy and hate" Erestor answers "But if those things love can endure, then it is true. A gentle wave can quench a spirited flame"
"You are talking nonsense today, Erestor" Finduilas comments with a giggle "Very unlike you"
Erestor merely smiles.
" And you too Sir! My you have changed!" she answered perfectly holding his eyes with her own until shifting them back to Arrad with a ringing laugh.
" indeed i believe she is right! Nothing has changed much - nothing at all. The trees still blossom and the bards still sing..our Lady grows more beautiful by the day" she snifed proudly, listening intruiged by the talk of danger and love. Shrugging she added softly " what is love without danger. One cannot exist without the to other. No love can render perfection" she noted simply answering Calma's relentless questions." you find me extremley well! My mare - Ea remember the young foal i adopted? - is growing more wild by the day and i would have her no other way. She barely lets another near her but then i would die before i rendered her a noosed spirit. She is a rareity"
(OOC I'm suffering from a bad case of writers block in everything so I'm not so creative at the moment.)
Ereinion seats Finduilas and then takes the chair beside her. He takes in the conversation and the reference to Lorien being boring hit a nerve in him. "Lorien boring? My dear friend Arrad, Lorien is many things but boring is certainly not one of them. I have seen the Lady Arwen there on many occasions and she stays with us for many months at a time. We watch the east gate of Moria, Dol Guldur and our masters of stealth frequently send word of foul deeds or plans and we meet our enemy head on. As with Imladris, Lorien is a place of healing body and mind. Our Lady sees the darkness on the horizon and we prepare for that day as we speak. We too have our master smiths and they create swords of great beauty and strength. I have never seen a sword of Lorien fail in battle nor has a sword of Imladris. What is ironic is that our weapons of such beauty and strength are used to dispatch creatures repulsive to all other races and their blood soils the ground it falls upon. There are days of bliss in Lorien as in Imladris but I highly doubt that either of our realms are boring. Our realms may be different to look upon but otherwise I would say they are very similar at heart."
Finduilas reaches over and places her hand on his. They do not share a glance but they have long known one another and they understand each other well. Ereinion says no more as he stands and walks off to speak with one of the younger ellyn over seeing the feast. They leave together and shortly Ereinion returns holding an ornate wine decanter and serves wine to those who are seated together. After the ladies are served he pours the first glass for Arrad and then the remaining ellyn. He returns to his chair again and seats himself then his lifts his goblet. "Well my friends to what should we dedicate this first toast,…?"
Erestor sees the flash of pain in Finduilas' eyes when Ereinion mentions Moria. Memories overcome the waking world, the feast fading... fading...
"They are of Eregion" Elrond said "They have wandered long. Their eldest daughter is suffering with a sickness even I cannot heal. She sees things, things from the past, future, present, and her own imagination. She sees them as one sees the waking world. I know not what to do"
"Let me see what I can do" I asked him.
"You? But... Very well, it could not hurt" Elrond agreed "Come with me"
I followed him to were Finduilas lay, shivering though she was well covered. Elrond then left.
"Finduilas" I called "Why do you walk in the dark?"
"They did not listen. I saw, but the did not listen. They are gone" was her distant reply "The stars shine, alone. A dragon!"
Finduilas carried on for a little while longer, sobbing.
"You told them" I said gently "You did what you could. Your guilt is without reason. Come back, come out of your tomb"
Finduilas shuddered, then opened her eyes.. "I'm free" she whispered in a normal voice.
"Ghost will haunt you no longer" I told her "Now sleep, and be at peace'
"Many years have past since then" Erestor thinks "But still she remembers, as do I. And still my love for her is strong, but she does not know, nor will she return such a feeling. She is meant to walk alone"
Finduilas glances at Erestor, noticing that he looks upset. But it soon passes, and Finduilas turns her attention to Ereinion.
"That peace we have still" she says gravely in reply "For I have seen much in the times ahead"
"You don't sound like you mean that," Arrad said knowingly.
She was not one to pry into others' minds often, but Erestor's memories had been strong.
"But compared to what is ahead, I suppose this could be called peace," she took a sip of her wine. Perhaps later she would ask about the memory. "The guards of Lothlorien are skilled, and few creatures come through our borders without my mother's admittance," Arradianna turned her attention back to Ereinion, "So living in Caras Galadhon can become boring, if one has an adventurous spirit. Don't begin to believe that none of Imladris or Lothlorien have fallen, for they have. But perhaps that is too far back for you to remember. It would be best to remember that mortality can find an elf if he is not careful."
Arrad's memory wandered back to a friendly elven king she had known as a child and grief passed over her for a moment before she pulled herself back to the present.
I will bow to your word Arrad for I was not constrained and have spent many, many days away from Lorien, though often did I long to look upon her forests again. Forgive me my Lady but please do not confuse the fact that I have never seen a sword of Imladris or Lorien fail in battle which is a credit to the craftsmanship of our smiths. As for those under my command who fell in battle, I remember each one of them all to well and time will not change that. It is regrettable that our peace comes at such a heavy cost." He pauses as his mind flashes visions from the past. "It is only by the grace of the Valar that many of us sit here and for that I am grateful, but I will never shy away from giving myself up to protect any of the three realms of my kinsmen." He raises his goblet and drinks a little wine, he then moves his chair back and stands. He smiles reassuringly at Finduilas and lays his hand on her shoulder when she looks up at him. "Please excuse me, I will await you in the library." He bows and makes way to the library.
Elladan and Elrohir, left to their own devices shortly after their 'debate' about wines, had gone to their room and changed for dinner. As was typical of them, they wore identical clothes. Perhaps it was childish - according to their father, anyway - but they liked being confused for the other. It made life more amusing. Tonight, they wore dark green tunics and silver leggings and wore their hair mostly down, save for the warrior's braids they had earned at a young age.
"They seem to be in a rather somber mood tonight," Elladan murmured to his younger twin as they watched their sister and friends talk at the feast.
"Talk of war and death tends to do that," Elrohir murmured back. He sighed and stretched his legs under the table. "This is boring," he said, his voice a bit louder.
"I vote we head to the library and finish that homework for Glorfindel. You know what a bear he is when we delay." Elladan made a face. He had been sentenced to three days forced study a week ago when he made an excuse about his missing homework.
Elrohir nodded and rose. "Come on, then," he said, leading the way to the library. He noticed someone else heading that way, but he shrugged it off.
Finduilas sighs as the twins leave.
"Why do they still bother dressing alike? 'Tis so easy to tell them apart!" she says.
"For us, maybe, but we have known then since before they could walk" Erestor points out.
Finduilas flips her golden-brown hair over her shoulder. "Elladan's hair is about an inch longer, and his nose is slightly bigger. His face is more square, and he is more muscular. Elrohir is thinner, his eyelashes are thicker, and his feet much smaller. Oh, and Elrohir is left-handed while Elladan is right-handed"
Erestor smiles. "You really are not the person I would expect to notice that. You are usually to impatient to pay close attention to detail. But you have known them for a very long time"
Finduilas sighs. "Aye. A very long time. They haven't changed much. Except now they are slaying orcs with swords rather then insects with needles"
Mallen listened to his brothe chattering happily with Linwe, paying his attention more towards the other group, where Finduilas and Erestor were.
"That peace we have still" she says gravely in reply "For I have seen much in the times ahead"
"Finduilas, what have you seen? The same Hir Elrond has? A war?" Mallen asked alert. This news troubled him very much. He filled his plate with something of everything he could reach - his work required much strength. Thise who didn't know him, often looked with surprise at an elf eating so much meat... But he had never relly cared. Especially after...
Mallen hurried to hide away the memory. Why would it reappear now?
~~~

Calma listened to Linwe and the others taling about Lorien, and in his heart he felt the longing for home he had burried long ago.

"How I wish to see the Mallorn trees again! And the Niphredil and Elanor blossoms! And the Lady... I saw her in my dreams last night! She didn't smile..."

"Then you should come over to visit us!" Linwe suggested. "I am sure your mother will be happy."

"I can't," Calma sighed, casting a quick glance at his brother.

"I am sure she would be even more happy if your brother went, too,"Linwe said softly, barely above a whisper. "She is worried, about both of you. She is your mother, after all..."

Calma shook his head.
"No, he won't go. Not to Lorien." Then he shook away the sadness.
"So, tell me, what brings you here?"

Finduilas finally acknowledges Mallen's question. "I apologize, Mallen, it slipped to the back of my mind." Finduilas' voice is grave as she tells of what she has seen. 'I know not if it is what Lord Elrond has seen, but my visions have been of darkness and turmoil. Something of great evil is about to be awoken. It will lie in quiet watchfullness until it's stregth has been regained. Then it will be unleashed. Durin's Bane also is stirring. The numbers of Orcs have increased, and the feeling that we have trust in a traitor lingers"

"But who is this traitor?" Mallen says thoughtfully.

"A man of great wisdom, but also great pride" Erestor answers quietly.

Finduilas and Mallen look at him questioningly, thier expressions clearly asking for more information.

"That is all I know" says Erestor.

((Just wondering if we cna answer for others people or just ourselves since this is my 1st RPG of this kind?))

Feanar stood for several minutes by the door to the Halls, watching her secret love. She vaguely listens to the conversation for she knows of what they speak. A great evil was coming and a traitor would soon be found. Looking down at her crimson gown with tiny silver sparkles the half-elf realized she was actually wearing something other than traveling clothes of worn browns and greens , always with a hint of crimson. Even her hair was worn long and shiny tonight. A rare occasion she had not particiapated in since her early Gondolin days.

Smoothing them down one more time, she tries to quietly steal into the Hall and pick a quiet dark corner from which she can safely listen to Erestor and the others. She reflected on the numerous times her feet had found there way here to Imladris, more and more frequently and always toward Erestor. She thought nothing of it until the dreams came.She was akin to the chief advisor in many ways but knew her love was unrequited. It at first surprised her as Feanar never thought she would love again. Ah well, been alone for too long anyhow. I would not know what to do anymore... She knew it was folly as he already loved someone else.

Just then her thoughts were interrupted by none other than her secret love. He had spotted her and now she had no choice but to go over and converse with the others. "Greetings, mellon nin. I have not seen much of you lately. Pray introduce me to your friends?" She asked as she took a vacant seat next to the advisor and poured herself some wine.

((Go ahead, RP's seem to be a lot more fun (and posts longer and more intricate) when everyones characters are free for others to control a bit. Just don't get too overboard with the controlling! Having characters in the DB makes this easier because thier personalities show how they would react to certain situations))

Finduilas gave Feanar a sincere smile. "Welcome. Erestor has told me much about you, but I do not believe we have met. I am Finduilas. I am afraid your name has slipped my mind. Would you be so kind to refresh it?"

"My name is Feanar" the elleth replied.

"A proud name. Anyone with a fiery spirit is a friend to me. I, also, have a free spirit that goes where it wishes" Finduilas said "Many ask why I am not married, for my skills would make me a fine wife. But those who ask that do not know me, and have not seen my hot temper. I would be an impossible person to live with"

At this Feanar laughed. "Not many elleth proclaim such a thing proudly!"

Finduilas shrugged. "I am just different"

"But in a good way" Erestor told her quietly, but she did not hear.

As Finduilas continued the conversation with Feanar; Erestor silenced and watched the two.

"They are not very different" he thought "Both are lovers of freedom, and both have shadowed pasts. They could be of great comfort to each other"

Ereinion enters the library and pauses as he comes in. He looks along the shelves and tries to recall where the early history of Eregion had been placed. Elrond's library was very well stocked and books dating back as far as the arrival of the first born in Aman. If one had been told by Elrond where the rarest books were kept it was possible to find a reference to most any event that had taken place, and Ereinion wanted and knew where to find these books.

He went into a small side anteroom and disengaged a hidden lock that released a shelving unit that swung in silently, he closed the hidden door and lit a lamp. The light revealed a number of ancient texts in a small room furnished with a table and two chairs. The room also contained three lamps and a portable stand on which to place the books if you were choosing more than one. A large plush chair was the final piece of furniture and the chair was used by Elrond when the occasion arose that he needed solitude to understand his visions. A second hidden door on the opposite wall lead to the private chambers of Lord Elrond

Ereinion found the two books that he sought and laid them out on the table. One was titled "The Making of the Rings and the second simply called Rings. He placed the books on the table and began to slowly leaf through the pages looking for any reference to the Red Ring. As he read the journal type entries he wondered if the others had forgotten the discussion they had as to the where about of the red ring, or if they were still discussing omens and sparing with words. His curiosity was tweaked during the discussion of the ring and he knew it was no mere legend. A third book came to mind he knew to be called Eregion, for some of the entries in this book were made by him, they dated before, during and after the fall of Eregion to Sauron and it was then that the ring disappeared. He checked to see if anyone was in the anteroom and it was clear, so he opened the hidden door and placed the books on a small side table and closed the door. He moved closer to the light and laid the books out and began his search.

Arradianna had become quiet, listening intently to the conversations around her as she slowly ate. Although her plate was full she didn't plan on eating much of it; she had eaten a lemba only a few hours earlier and she could still feel it sitting in her stomach. If it hadn't been for the fact that she had been eating lembas all her life and the taste was rather boring to her, she would already be in the library. In fact, she was beginning to think that if she didn't find an excuse to go there soon that she would be sick.
"Excuse me," she said as she stood, "I will be in the library should anyone need me."
She then departed with a smile.

In the library it held the sweet smell of books older than herself, a rarity in her home. She made her way to where Narsil was housed and ran her fingers over its blade. Her eyes strayed to the picture of Gil-galad and she almost became sentimental, but a childlike giggle followed by the sound of something crashing to the floor made her whirl around. Arrad quickly glanced back and saw Estel sitting beneath Narsil nursing a wound.
"Estel," she scolded him, "you will learn respect for that sword. Go get that bandaged before you stain the floor." Arrad nudged him off as she placed the tip of the sword with the other pieces. A small smile caught her lips as she realized the irony of the situation. She walked with a lighter step to side room where a whispered word opened a drawer beneath a table. She pulled out her sister's diary, the most prominent reason for her presence in Rivendell. She walked past an antechamber where she saw Ereinion seated.
"May I ask what you are doing?" she asked as she walked closer to him.

A few moments after Arradianna departed, Estel hurried back into the banquet hall, holding his left forearm tightly and fighting back tears.

Finduilas halted him. "You are hurt" she said "Show me"

"I'm fine!" snapped Estel "Men don't cry when they get hurt!"

Finduilas had to force herself not to giggle. "You are far from being a man, and if you want to act like one, act upon this, trustworthy men are honest and unafraid to show thier pain when it is beyond thier bearing. That is a true man"

Estel sniffled and held out his arm.

"How did you get this?" Finduilas questioned as she bound his wound with a torn fragment of a linen.

"I was *sniff* playing with the *wimper* shards of Narsil" Estel said mornfully, knowing he was in trouble.

"You naughty boy! You need to read more, so you can understand why the sword must be respected!" Finduilas chided "If you behave from now on, I will not tell Lord Elrond"

"I'll be good!" Estel promised.

"You said that once before! Now act on it this time. Off you go!" Finduilas gave Estel a little shove as she walked away.

Finduilas sat at the feast for a little longer, then excused herself to the Library.

Upon entering, Finduilas nearly tripped over a shield knocked off the wall by Estel.

Finduilas hissed dwarvish curses as she tried to lift the shield off the ground. Seeing as it was easier to take off then put back on because of its weight, Finduilas gave up.

Noticing that it was not a normal shield of Imladris, Finduilas examined it closer. "This looks like the Numenorian symbol" Finduilas commented as the fingered the mariners compass emblazioned on the shield.

Feanar was surprisingly open with Finduilas, talking amiably until Estel came in with a cut finger. She stifled laughter at his childish comments and nodded as the elleth excused herself. The peredhel was left sitting there alone next to Erestor who seemed to be reflecting on his thoughts. She recked for conversational talk bnut came up empty, that always seemed to happen around him and she was not sure why. "Erestor, do you...is there..." she dropped off in embarassment, how could one such as him love one such as her. She was lke Elrond and his children true, but she lacked the noble birth they had. She was simply ugly and somewhat repulsive to look at.

Erestor looked up at her, "Is there what mellon?"

"N-nothing...'tis nothing. If you will excuse me I suddenly feel ill. Sleep well Erestor." Feanar practically ran out of the Hall and found her feet going towards the library. She peeked around the corner to see Finduilas examining a heavy shield. "It is of Numenorian origin. I was there when it was made. Estel will receive it in time. May I ask you a question Finduilas?"

"Of course!" She put down the shield and turned toward the half-elf.

"Are you and 'Stor...I mean do you hav- Oh I am terrible at this, never mind. I will ask another: From where do you come from? I sense much turmoil and anguish within you, like you have seen and experienced such sorrows as I have in similarity?" Feanar knelt down near the forgotten shield and absently ran her fingers over it, mumbling to herself.

"I'm sorry what were you saying?"

"Nothing of importance. Just remembering, so am I right about you having as much if not more sorrow than I. Your past contains many shadows, I wish to share mine with a kindred spirit if you wish not to tell of yourself then I will drop the subject." The elleth smiled sadly as she let images of her sad life flit briefly before her eyes.

"Aye, my past has shadows. Deep shadows, ones that I would like to forget. But I do not, and that shapes me. I let my fate take me where it will, even though it may lead me down corridors I do not wish to go down." Finduilas sighed and absent-mindedly played with her hair. "I am from Eregion. My father was the grandson of Finrod Felagund. I am named after the daughter of Orodreth. I forsaw the destruction of Eregion, and tried to tell it's people. But listen they did not, and many of my friends perished. My family and I escaped unharmed. Something possessed me after that. I saw visions of things. Things that were true and things of my own imagination. I suppose it was part guilt that I survived and so many others didn't and part my own forsight unrestrained. I encouraged my family to wander many dark roads. Even the Lady of the Golden Wood could not completely chase out what was haunting me. It was many years after Eregion was derstoyed that we finally came to Imladris. Elrond could do nothing for me either. Somehow Erestor healed me. He told me that I did what I could by telling of what I saw, and that it was not my fault they did not listen. My guilt was what loosed my forsight, and knowing that I was not to blame restrained it. I have dwelt here even though my family sailed West, though I do not know what keeps me here, save for pride in my Noldo blood"

Feanar was staring at her dazedly.

Finduilas was immediatly ashamed. "I am sorry, I should not have told you such things. It was very selfish of me"

Feanar shook her head. "I asked you, I do not mind. You are brave for willingly remebering such things"

"I know nothing of bravery. Bravery is facing death without fear. I ran from it like a coward" Finduilas looked away from Feanar.

"Perhaps fate wants you to live on" said Feanar quietly.

Finduilas sighed again. "Perhaps"

Both elleth sat in silence until footsteps startled them.

"A doorway is not the wisest place to sit" Erestor commented.

Finduilas laughed. "We forgot so quickly where we were! We would get out of here, if we could move this shield"

"You are asking the wrong person for help. I have held nothing heavier then large books of late" Erestor pointed out.

"Of late? Rather of always. You look out of place amongst the twins and I. Elf-maids do not oft earn warriors braids and yet I have, and the twins have them also. You are too sheltered in that Library of yours" Finduilas said, laughing.

"True, but I do know how to fight, I just don't go looking for ways to demonstrate my skills" Erestor told her.

"I'll believe that when I see it. I'm going to find someone who can help" Finduilas said teasingly, then walked away, leaving Erestor and Feanar alone.

Feanar stood akwardly for a few moments, silently cursing Finduilas' leaving. Maybe she saw what Erestor didn't. "So...would you like to twalk through the gardens, it is a beautiful night?"

"Yes, it is and I would like that! I hide in the Library all the time..."
Erestor smiled and walked by Feanar's side. "You were trying to ask me something earlier, but- what were you going to ask me Fe?"

The peredhel's face grew pale and worried. "I was..just wanted to...I-I can't...none of my business!" Feanar ran off to her hiding spot, leaving a very confused Erestor to walk after her. When she got to the hidden area that few new of, the elleth rapped twice on the trunk of the tree and quickly dipped inside the door as it closed behind her, enclosing her in solitude. She slumped against the wall. Why now do these thoughts come unbidden in my head? I have always been able to converse with 'Stor no problems, now I can not form even a coherent sentence! What ever shall I do? Feanar kept up this berating until a shadow passed in front of the light. "E-E-Erestor? Why must you follow me? I wish to be alone now!!"

The black-haired elf sat down. "Because I wish to know what you would ask me...and because you are one of the few friends I have, I love your presence. It is much like Finduilas' and refreshing after listening to the same boring people all the time."

Feanar was frozen, he had chased after her. No one had ever done that for her. How could he not care for her at least a little? With a new found courage she procedded, "I was wondering if you had another in your life? Just for curiosities sake!" As silent minutes passed by, her heart sank further at her advisor friend's quietness.

"There are many different forms of love, Feanar" Erestor said finally, sighing.

Feanar frowned. She didn't like that vague an answer.

Meanwhile Erestor was deep in thought. For a great many years he had hid his deep love for Finduilas, and now he suddenly struggled to conceal it. Erestor couldn't understand it, and it frusterated him.

At the same time, elsewhere, Finduilas was figting similiar thoughts. "I love no-one" she said to herself angrily, but a sinking feeling said she was lying. Finduilas sighed.

Returning to the doorway, Finduilas discovered Erestor and Feanar had gone. Something told her to go to the gardens.

Finduilas looked around and saw no-one. Sudden anger toward Feanar boiled inside her.

"Why?" Finduilas asked herself. "Because you are jealous, and afraid Erestor might love her too" was her answer. "Not true!" Finduilas argued, but her heart wasn't in it.

Feanar replied, "Yes there are many different forms of love aren't there. I'm sorry, 'Stor. I wish you well with Finduilas and will help you if it is needed. I think she cares for you too. I am tired and wish to sleep now." The half-elf lied at the last part but her heart was breaking... again. She figured she was not meant for love and had to get away from her long-time friend.

She walked out from the hiding place and nearly ran into Finduilas. "Greetings meldir. I if it is for Erestor you seek he is in that tree with the long tendrils, rap twice and a door will open. I will need the place no longer." Feanar sighed sadly and walked toward the the Halls, her corner was awaiting her. She quietly slipped past the few remaining elves and slipped into the corner by the fire to watch it glow and slowly die away, leaving her in utter darkness.

She abruptly ran out into the outlying forests and howled loudly at the emptiness in her. If lonely was how the Valar wanted her then lonely the Valar would have her. Consoled but still sad Feanar walked composedly back to the library to see who had been sitting in there practically all night.

((We have to get this moving, there are people waiting to join in Part 2))

Erestor watched Feanar leave sadly.

"She does not understand, Finduilas may care for me, but not in that way" Erestor thought "The path set out for Finduilas is one she must walk alone. She is not ready for love. She would act it, just to please me, and be miserable. I could never bestow such a fate upon Finduilas; it would break her"

Meanwhile Finduilas was trying to follow Feanar's hurried instructions.

"Longtrills?" she asked herself "What on Arda are Longtrills?"

It was a while before Finduilas managed to get the secret door open.

She found Erestor looking rather as if he was brooding on something.

"Erestor, did you forget that we are expected in the library?" Finduilas asked, a hint of annoyance in her voice.

Erestor looked up at her.

The light from outside framed her figure, making it appear as if she sttod in a halo. Her hair shone gold, and dressed in a gown of white, she appeared to shine like a ray of hope.

"Nay, Finduilas, I did not forget" replied Erestor "Let us go there with haste"

Finduilas tossed her hair over her shoulder with a haughty air. Her quick steps were proud, and her smirk triumphant. Finduilas was unmistakably Noldo.

Those already in the Library were lost in their books, the candles slowly reducing themselves to waxy pools.

Finduilas immediatly began searching for a certain scroll which she remembered from her days in Eregion.

Erestor caught sight of Feanar, standing a bit aways, looking forlorn and morose.

Shame overwhelmed him. He had, unintentionally, broken her heart. He had not known of her feelings, even though, somehow, she knew of his toward Finduilas.

Though his guilt was consuming, Erestor could not love Feanar. He could not because he did not and never would have even if he had not known. They were not meant for each other.

Or were they?

"Am I just selfishly ignoring what is truly intended to be just because of my desire of another?" Erestor silently questioned. Something told him nay, that was not the plight. Someone else was set in Feanar's destiny. And set there firmly.

But consolation was needed, so Erestor went over to the rueful elleth and placed his hand on her shoulder.

"No matter what, I will always be your friend." Erestor told her softly, "That will never change, regardless of what is between myself and Finduilas. You and I will not change"

A tear slipped down Feanar's cheek. "Oh Erestor..." she whispered, then lay her head on Erestor's shoulder and cried.

Erestor held Feanar tightly, whispering words of solace to the heatbroken she-elf.

Suddenly Finduilas gasped in shock and horror. "The Númenorian scrolls! They are gone!" she shrieked, pointing at an empty space on the shelf.

Erestor and Feanar were startled from their embrace.

"Those were valuable beyond knowledge!" Finduilas wailed "The personal accounts of many of the kings were written upon them! The maps of Númenorë and Beleriand are missing also!"
