Post The Lady of Rohan(anyone can join!!!)
on: June 18, 2005 03:00
OOC: This takes place about 5 years after the WOTR after Eomer has taken up his kingship and the hobbits have all settled in at home. Eldarion is not born yet and Eomer is also not married. In case you have not read the book, Lothiriel is the daughter of the Prince Imrahil of Belfalas in Dol Amroth and he assisted Aragorn and Eomer in their efforts to overthrow the Dark Lord.

Lothiriel awoke to the golden rays of sunlight streaming in through the narrow window in her bedroom chamber. She stirred and turned over and fell back asleep. But not for long.

"Lothiriel," a voice said. " Lady Lothririel!" and Lothiriel felt someone shaking her shoulder to wake her. Groaning she turned over and looked up at her maid Niela. "Yes?" she asked.

"Your father summons you to breakfast, did you forget that today you ride to Rohan?" Niela asked. Lothiriel sat up defiantly.

" I already informed my father that I have no desire to go to Rohan!! I do not wish to be married off to any man, even the King of Rohan!" and with that she got up and bid her maid leave her. Niela left Lothiriel's chamber and Lothiriel angrily dressed and looked out the window that overlooked the sea.

" I will not let my father give my hand in marriage to a King who rules naught but leagues of barren waste and grass! My heart belongs to the sea and my life is woven together with it. If I leave my beloved city, I will wither like a flower in a desert land!" she thought. She turned to a knocking on her door. Her father stood there and asked " May I come in?" Lothiriel turned again to the window without responding and her father walked up behind her. He placed his hands on her shoulder and turned her to face him.

" My daughter, why are you in such a fey mood?"

" You know very well!" she countered. " I do not wish to ride with you to Rohan yet you force me to against my will."

The Prince Imrahil sighed and sat on the foot of Lothiriel's bed. "Lothiriel, you are come of age and are a woman now, beautiful and wise. It is only fit for you to marry now for what else will you do? You cannot dwell here forever alone!" When Lothiriel did not answer he continued, "The King Eomer is a noble man, tested in war and gracious. He will treat you well. Now come, stop acting like a child and put on your riding cloak. I will await you outside." With that the Prince turned and left. Lothiriel grudgingly did as she was told for she hated being called a child and she slowly made her way down the stairs to the courtyard.

" Farewell dear home that I have known" she whispered to the walls.

OOC: Anyone is welcome to play Eomer or the Prince Imrahil or anyone else that they would like

[OOC: Hi can I join? My character's not in the db yet 'cos she's not quite developed yet. I rarely do anything pertaining to Rohirrim or Gondorians...]

Lihtfota watched as Lothriel and Imrahil descended into the courtyard, and stepped forward with a great palamino stallion. The horse whinnied and pawed the ground, the rays of morning sun catching on the magnificent silver mane and golden coat.

"My lady, King Eomer sent me to escort you to your new home, and bade me bring you this gift. His name is Anor - the sun - and Eomer hopes he will be a pleasant mount for your journey."

Suddenly remembering her manners, the girl dipped a curtsey and held Anor's head, waiting to see Lothriel's reaction.

[OOC: Sorry I'm going to have to give my character more thought later. Lihtfota probably looks like your average Rohirrim (blonde, blue/green eyes... yeah.) and I'll work out her personality as we go along.]

(( OOC: Mind if I join in? I'd like to play the maid Niela. I'll add her to the db later.))

Niela hurried around Lothiriel's chambers, overseeing the packing of her mistresse's gowns. She was experiencing a strange numb at the leaving of her home.
Being so busy helped, it meant she did not have to think about leaving for more than a few seconds.

However, her calm did not last long. As she laid out her mistress's traveling cloak she could not contain her sadness any longer. Sinking to the floor, she held her hand to her face and wept. Her other hand started making a tight fist of the cloak's velvety material.

Her inner emotions struggled desperately for a moment then she rose. She did not want for anyone to catch her like this. She would have to keep her sorrow to herself, for Lotheriel's sake. This was going to hard enough for her longtime friend.

OOC: It will probably take about a week to get to Rohan.Yes, everyone is welcome to join! I'm glad to have you!!
Lothiriel took Anor's reins and looked at him carefully. He was a beautiful horse but she did not wish to be bribed into accepting Eomer's hand in marriage. " You may tell your master when we arrive that I thank him for the horse but one's love cannot be that easily bought." Lothiriel replied. "Lothiriel!" her father interjected sharply. " Hold your tongue." Lothiriel did not answer but jumped lightly upon her horse and waited for the servants to finish bringing her belongings out. She held back her tears but the sadness of leaving her beloved city by the sea welled up inside her heart and she choked back a sob. She looked towards her father and searched his face to see if he would change his mind and not force her to marry this Eomer King but Prince Imrahil was too involved in giving commands to his oldest son about how the city was to be governed in his absence. With his orders complete, Imrahil jumped on his stallion and began to lead the company that would travel with them to the outer gate of the city.

Eomer, King of Rohan stared out the window, and off into the distance. They were to leave today... she was to leave today... his bride-to-be, Lothiriel would begin her Journey from Dol Amroth to Edoras on this bright, clear, morning.

Once again, Eomer's eyes strayed to the portrait now hanging on the wall of his private rooms. - If the artist's brush had been 'true' - and the Representative Ministers from the port city had assured him it was - Lothiriel was beautiful.

That, however, wasn't what concerned the Ruler of Rohan. No... it was the 'arrangement' of this marriage that bothered him. Eomer would have much preferred to 'meet' someone... to fall in love... to marry for love... but his own Ministers had advised against it. It would 'strengthen ties', they'd said... to marry Prince Imrahil's daughter. For the 'good' of Rohan, had been another persuasion.

But... Eomer couldn't help but wonder (in his private thoughts) if Lothiriel would like Rohan. - If she would like him. Over and over the Advisors from Dol Amroth had 'assured' him - and his own - that both the Prince and his daughter were enthusiastic about this arranged marriage...

To that end, Eomer had sent Anor as a 'gift' for his unyet-as-met Lady. A fine palomino stallion, Anor was one of the best bred from his Stables... and he, himself, had tested the horses paces and training before doing so. No less than the 'best' would be good enough for Lothiriel of Dol Amroth...

A knock sounded on the door, recalling Eomer to his surroundings. "Enter!" he ordered, and a servant did so. "Your horse is ready, my Lord!" he announced. With a nod, the King of Rohan strode smartly out into the corridor... down it... and out into the Palace courtyard.

A smile, and a pat to his own stallion, and with the ease of long-practice, the man swung up into the saddle. "Go!" he ordered his mount, and followed by his normal 'train' of Rohirrim guards, Eomer trotted the horse out... and headed for his usual morning ride...

(( OOC: hopefully this is ok... there may not be many posts for Eomer until the Dol Amroth party actually gets to Edoras, but I'll do my best! ))

Lothiriel watched as the outer city gates grew closer and closer. All too soon they were passing underneath the wide, white marbled arch that led out of the city. The banners were blowing in the cool sea breeze and the sun danced and sparkled upon the grey-green sea. Lothiriel took a deep breath of the salty sea air. " This will probably be the last smell of the sea that I am allowed" she thought. Her raven hair shone sleek and wavy in the sun. It was long, up to her waist, but that only added to her beauty. Her eyes were as black as coal and would leap into a sudden fire if something angered her. The people of her city said she resembled an elven maiden of old, for the elvish blood ran nearly true in her line, and they loved her dearly. Many had gathered upon the walls to see her leave and some wept. Lothiriel looked back one last time upon her home town and then turned away. Her thoughts then shifted to the King Eomer. "I wonder what he is like? I hope he is not like the other nobles that I have known, always with their noses in the air and their armor all polished and showy. Perhaps he is like the King Aragorn. They are friends after all". she thought. Her father pulled up his horse next to Lothiriel. " That is a fine horse, my daughter." " It is" Lothiriel replied. The Prince turned his sea grey eyes upon his daughter. " Lothiriel, are you truly angry with me? I love you more than any other treasure upon Middle Earth and it would rend my heart if you could not bear this. Would you just go along with this? For me?" Lothiriel turned her eyes to her father. " If you truly loved me, Father, you would let me stay in my city beside the sea and not subject me to die in a stable in the middle of a barren wasteland!!" The Prince made no reply, only a sigh let on to what he was thinking. " I hope you can find it in your heart to change your mind, my daughter." And he rode back to the head of the line.

Niela followed quietly behind Lothierel, her blue eyes watery with tears. Her eyes eagerly but sorrowfully drank in all the sights of her home city for the last time. She saw the sun shimmering on the marble gate and the cities people strolling along the by the ever changing sea.
She tried hard to keep to its rushing sound in her mind even long after they had passed it.

"Lothiriel?" She ventured after a while. "I hear he is a handsome man." She watched the girl's brooding dark eyes, hoping to put her in a better mood. "And is evidently generous. That's a beautiful horse."

OOC: Princess Sailasiri: Lothiriel is very elf-like and has quite a bit of elvish blood in her veins but she is mortal nonetheless. Sorry if I confused you in my description of her!

Lothiriel turned to her maid Niela. Just the thought of this man made her angry yet she knew that her faithful maid and friend was only trying to lift her spirits." Ride beside me Niela! No need for you to trail behind me like a common servant. We are friends after all, are we not?" When Niela pulled up beside her on her palfrey Lothiriel answered, " Yes, I hear he is somewhat handsome, yet rugged after his kind." Then lowering her voice she continued, " I know that you too are sad to leave the city and if you would ask it of me I would release you from my service and you would be free to return as you will. No need for both of us to suffer."

o O (Hope you don't mind me joining . . . I'll serve as handmaid to Eomer. If there's any objections let me know.)

Ramo watched her Master leave the compound. He had been in such a solitary mood of late that htere had been none of those friendly chats she so enjoyed. Quickly she made up the bed and tidied his bedchamber. Her eyes drifted to the portrait hanging above the mantlepiece. She was beautiful there was no doubt. Prince Eomer's heart would soon fall victim to the Gondorian maids charms. Turning away from these thoughts she swept the room out and looked it over one last time to make sure it was presentable. When the Princess arrived from her home Ramo would become one of her handmaids. She would sorely miss serving Eomer.

Somehow, Lihtfota had been expecting this. Things weren't usually love at first sight for arranged marriages, and Eomer looked like he needed all the help he could get, really. From where she rode at the front of the column, she turned slightly in the saddle and looked back at the lady. Snatches of her conversation drifted forth on the light breeze.

If you truly loved me, Father, you would let me stay in my city beside the sea and not subject me to die in a stable in the middle of a barren wasteland!

Oh, but Rohan was no barren wasteland, and Edoras was no stable! How could she even think it was so? Did Lothriel not see the beautiful rolling hills, the wide plains, the rivers glistening under an afternoon sun, and perhaps a herd or two of some of Middle Earth's finest equines, their coats gleaming as they thundered across the great plains... Had she ever taken a ride, alone, across the Westfold as evening fell, smelt the fresh grass and the first blooms of summer on the cool evening breeze that whipped through one's hair, dispelling the muggy heat a summer day had left in its wake...? She thought not.

//The eyes see what they want to. It's all in the mind. That's what they all say. If you want to see a barren wasteland, or a stable... Well that's all you'll be seeing, though I see nothing wrong with the stable bit.//

Lihtfota shook her head and ran her fingers absently through her bay gelding's mane. To think Eomer had sent her to help Lothriel get used to the idea of living in Rohan. Her task was going to be harder than she thought.

((Ooc. Sorry about that EowArwen. I've edited the post.))

Niela smiled blearily over at Lotheriel. Though socially they were far apart, her friend had a way with doing away with all that in an instant. The two become friends and equals once more.

"Oh Lotheriel, even though I will miss my home terribly I could never leave you. You the one person I can truly count as a friend and nothing is worth losing that."

She was silent for a moment, slightly embarrassed.

"Let's find that Rohirric girl Lihtfota." She spoke cheerily now. "I want to ask her some more questions about this Eomer."
She silently prayed that her friend would forgive her for bringing up this sore subject so much but Prince Imrahil himself had requested that she attempt to help his daughter adjust.

After a time, Eomer pulled up his mount, and surveyed the horizon before him. To the North was the Mark... spreading before him, as far as the eye could see. The wide plain was soothing to him, somehow. It was 'open'... 'honest' almost.. hiding nothing with it's expanse.

But... would Lothiriel see the beauty of it? Could One who had lived by the sea her whole life, see the waves of tall grass blowing in the wind? - And what did she truly, in her heart, 'think' of Rohan? Had the Ministers been 'overly anxious' in their reassurances? - Or had he been mistaken? Could Lithfota 'ease' his future wife's mind about coming here?

You're 'wondering' too much! Eomer King chided himself, and turning his stallion, without a word, headed back to the Golden Hall. - But... he'd faced the horse Westward in that turn. He would not look to the East... he'd been doing so far too much lately...

********************

Eomer returned from his ride, and dismounted... fed his mount the 'treat' he expected, and ran his eyes over the stallion... as he always did. Horses were too important to Rohan - and to him for Eomer to do otherwise.

But, it was time to greet the other duties awaiting him as King, and so headed back for his rooms. - And, almost bumped into someone coming out. "Ramo!" first Eomer, and then the nearest guard caught the handmaiden before she fell. Dismissing the other man, he gave Ramo an apologetic smile. "Are you all right?" he asked, suddenly realizing they'd not had one of their pleasant chats for some few weeks. She'd served him well these past few years - and it was the reason Eomer had chosen her as handmaiden to Lothiriel...

Ramo grinned at her King. "Good morning My Lord. You are up and about quite early. I am as well as can be expected on this fine day." She caught sight of his worried eyes and stopped her pleasant rambling. "What bothers you so Eomer? Is there something you wish to speak of?" The painting in the Royal bedchamber flashed before her minds eye and she understood. "It's that maiden isn't it, your bride." Ramo placed a gentle hand on his arm and smiled at her Master. "She will learn to love all that is here." She gestured at the wonderful Rohirric scenery. "And what is here." Her left hand rested on his chest above his heart. "I must see to my duties but perhaps tonight I will be free if you wish to talk." She curtsied and backed away.

Lothiriel was glad to hear Niela's response and responded, " That means so much to me Niela." Hesitating and thinking about Niela's proposition, Lothiriel finally agreed to go with her to speak to Lihfota. " I am being rather harsh, I suppose. After all I have never really seen Rohan before, only in passing." she said to her maid. As they rode to the head of the line where Lihfota rode Lothiriel thought back to her childhood in Belfalas. She recalled playing with the servants' children in the gardens behind the castle and running along the sand and watching the ships come in. Oh how she loved to watch the ships dock and bring on land their merchandise. Her father allowed her to have whatever she set her eyes, and heart, on. He had never refused her even once. " He spoiled me so." she thought. " It is probably because he missed Mother so much." Lothiriel's mother had died giving birth to her and ever since that day, the Prince Imrahil had treated Lothiriel with utmost care and love, since she was in the image of his dear wife and was like a lasting memory of her. They would take long walks on the beach and let the waves crash into their legs and he would listen to anything that troubled her. If she was sad, or lonely, or angry he could always make it better for her it seemed. " So why then can I not do this one thing for him? He has done so much for me and never asked for anything in return!" She sighed. She wanted to but she wondered if she would really find the same security and love that her father had given her in the arms of another man. Her thoughts were interrupted though as they approached Lihfota.

"Yes, my lady?"

"I must see to my duties but perhaps tonight I will be free if you wish to talk." She curtsied and backed away.

"Perhaps," Eomer answered, and watched until Ramo left, and shut the door behind her. Slapping his gloves onto the table, he shook his head. Perceptive of her to have picked up on his concerns... or at least - the 'true' one. Would he talk with her? Eomer wasn't certain... yet.

Still considering it when he headed for his working-office, he barely noticed when one of his Ministers fell into step beside him... and almost jumped when he spoke.

Grinning widely, the man was almost 'beaming'. "They'll have left this morning, my lord!" he said, and dared to slap his King's back. "I can just 'see' her now... Princess Lothiriel on the back of that magnificent stallion... her eyes flashing with eagerness to get here... her heart full of the love she must already feel for..."

"Love?" Eomer stopped and glared at his Advisor. "How can she 'love' me?" he asked, incredulous, and his temper 'broke' through. "Lothiriel doesn't even know me! She hasn't even the luxury that I have - a portrait of what is purported to be her likeness!"

The Minister quailed before the Ruler of Rohan. "Speak not of 'love' to me!" Eomer snapped, and turned to keep going. "In fact," he ordered, "since all the 'arrangements' have been made... down to the last detail, it is not necessary to mention anything about Lothiriel to me again... is that clear?"

Wishing he could 'escape' to the stables and the freedom of the Mark once again, Eomer's brow was dark as he entered his office. Casting his concerns to the back of his mind - or at least 'attempting' to - he threw himself in to his work.

But... as angry as he was, Eomer King had not missed any 'detail' of the 'altercation' with his Advisor. - For, from the corner of his eye, he'd quite clearly caught sight of Roma's dress-hem disappearing down the corridor behind them. Most probably, Eomer thought, his hand-maiden had heard every word he'd said...

o O (I'm going to take some liberties with this post. Gwendeth if I'm taking to many (or too few preferably ) You just let me know, ok?)

Ramo had remembered something that Cook had wanted her to ask Eomer King and was just about to enter his working-office when raised voices pricked her ears. She hid behind the door and listened. As the words came clearly to her, her heart began to beat faster. The conversation quickly ended and the maiden hurried to press the heavy woolen table linens for the supper. But her mind was not on her duties. He does not love her. What did you expect, that he would gaze on her portrait and become enamored immediatly. Her green eyes turned to one of the copper pots hanging from the ceiling. With her ruddy complexion Ramo would never be mistaken for nobility and her single pointed ear shouted of her shameful heritage. Still, Eomer has treated me with nothing but friendship and respect. Yes and he looks on you with the same eyes as he does his Sister. There could never be anything more. He is Royalty. She sighed and rested the heavy metal iron on the table. There were times in that past 13 years she had thought there was more than friendship between her and Eomer. But when the news of Lotheriel and sounded her heart had almost died within her. An acrid smell filled the air, jerking Ramo back to reality. She had burned a hole clear through one of the table linens. Tears blurred her vision as she went about her tasks, waiting for the days end.

Lothiriel, almost shyly, pulled her new horse up beside Lihfota. Clearing her throat, Lothiriel silently looked ahead and then turned to her and said, " I am sorry I was so harsh with you this morning. Would you.....could you perhaps....tell me of Rohan? Of.... Eo... Eomer." she slowly asked.

" I am sorry I was so harsh with you this morning. Would you.....could you perhaps....tell me of Rohan? Of.... Eo... Eomer."

"Well... where do I begin..." Lihtfota murmered to herself. Perhaps she'd start with Rohan. And she'd have to be careful around the subject of Eomer.

"Rohan... I know it's not anything like the sea that you're used to, Milady; it's more rolling plains and hills and vast grasslands... But it's really very beautiful in its own way. There's a sort of wild freedom in the very air itself, and... if only you would see for yourself how grand the whole place is when you look out from the rooftops of Meduseld, with the freedom of the empty plains all spread out around you, or feeling the wind in your hair and the sun at your back and watching the ground just flow beneath you as you ride across the Mark..." the girl suddenly stopped, and reddened, realising she had just revealed where she spent most of her free time - perched up on the roofs of the Golden Hall. It was not exactly allowed, but nobody spent time looking for lone girls who took it in their heads to climb the Golden Hall, and the feeling of being up there, and the views her perch commanded, all but made up for the reprimands that followed on the rare occasions she was spotted up there.

"Well... you'd have to experience it personally, but I'm sure Eomer King would be glad to show you..."

// Except the rooftop bit, that is...//

She waited to see how Lothriel took this - it was safer to judge her mood before she actually started telling her about Eomer.

(( lol, I think that's fine! Hopefully this is ok... ))

Fortunately, the morning's work was not only 'dull', but there was little of it. After ten years of kingship, Eomer had things well in hand.

He signed the bottom of a last document, and set the pen back in the inkwell. "Nothing else?" Eomer asked, and met everyone's eyes keenly. Carefully hiding his eagerness to be 'done', he waited until each one of his Advisors had either shaken their heads, or murmured, "No, my lord," in reply. And, since there were no 'audiences' scheduled - Eomer had checked that first of all - he could follow his own wishes. It wasn't that he didn't like seeing his people... it was quite the contrary. It was just... he was in no 'mood' for idle 'chatter' today. If there had been appointments - he would have gone... and betrayed no outward sign that anything was disturbing the King of Rohan's thoughts...

"Very well," he answered, and dismissed them all. Breathing a sigh of relief, Eomer closed his eyes for a long moment. He wished Eowyn were here... it would have been nice to talk to his sister for a while. She'd be back for the wedding... Eowyn had assured him of that in her last message. Both she and Faramir would... and Eomer would be glad to see them.

But, rising, he left his office... after making sure there was no one 'lingering' outside it. The morning was now well-advanced... but it wasn't yet noon. He strode through the halls, trying not to seem 'aimless' about it. After a while though, Eomer found himself outside one of the kitchens when he smelled the faint odor of something burning... and there was the sound of a 'screeching' voice berating someone soundly for her inattention.

Eomer paused, frowning, trying to determine 'who' it was... and what they'd 'done' (or not done)... and when he (finally) did, 'broke' his own rule about not 'interfering' with the Palace underlings.

Flinging the door wide, Eomer glared around the room. "Ramo!" he said firmly, "you're needed above!" in reference to his own private quarters. 'Why' he kept silent on... since there really wasn't anything at all... but it didn't matter. The King had 'spoken', and without a word, he spun on his heel and left... with Ramo followng behind... until they got there, and the door was shut behind them.

She'd been crying, Eomer could see that plainly... and tipped his faithful handmaiden's chin up gently. "What happened?" he asked.

((O.O.C. Just as a warning I'll be leaving to go a week long vaction on Friday and I don't think I'll be able to post.))

Niela listened very carefully to Lihofota. She was pleased Lothiriel had taken her up on her suggestion.
The girl's description of Rohan did not so sound as bad as Niela had believed. But then the handmaiden frowned and shook her head.
Rohan was far from the sea, how could anyplace be livable without the sea?
She suddenly noticed that the Prince was trying to catch her eye. Discreetly she rode up to him.
"How is Lothiriel?"
"Well sire, I think she will adjust."
The prince smiled kindly at her,"And you? Will you be able to accept these changes?"
Niela lowered her eyes, "Yes, I think so."

As she rode back to Lothiriel and Lihofota, she was glad she hadn't been seen. Lothiriel would be unhappy so say the least to discover her father and friend going behind her back.

Lothiriel pondered what Lihfota had said. " I suppose I would have to see it for myself," she answered. " It does not seem all 'that' monotonous." Pausing, she lowered her proud head and asked, " What then of the King? Eomer? What is he like?" A long pause ensued and Lothiriel's thoughts drifted back to the time that she and her father had ridden to Gondor and met with the King Aragorn and his elven bride Arwen. They had seemed so happy, so glad to just be near each other, so.. so.. in love. She had seen that also between Eowyn and Faramir. Love bound them tightly together, neither of the couples seemed to wish to be apart. " Could I love and be loved like that?" she thought. Her hand had been asked for in marriage before. Princes, lords and nobles had come frequently from places such as Minas Tirith and Osgiliath and from other ports bordering the sea and requested that her father give her to them as a wife. Some had been young some handsome but some were also older with grayer hairs and Lothiriel and her father had, in private, laughed together as they talked about them. But that had been when Lothiriel was only in her early twenties. Her father had seen no reason then for her to rush into marriage but now that she was approaching her thirties, he seemed more willingly to marry her off. She wondered how long he had thought about giving her away to this Eomer King. Had he spoken with Eomer, with his advisors and made absolutely sure that he was going to be 'right' for her? "Of course he did," she thought. " Father always was most cautious and thourough in anything that was even of the slightest importance." Her thoughts were interrupted by Lihfota.

OOC: Would anyone like to play the Prince Imrahil? If you would like to go ahead otherwise I suppose I can.

"How could you not be paying attention?! You're job is to clean, nothing more and no less. I don't know why the King has you here. We certainly don't need any dirty half-breeds begging in our home!!" That was when the tears came fresh and anew. In part Ramo was used to these tirades, usually without cause but there were times when she simply couldn't take anymore. She bit her lip and forced the tears away waiting for Cook to finish her speech. "Are you listening to me girl?!"

"Ramo!" Eomer's voice resounded through the now silent kitchen. "You're needed above." She followed him through the halls to the rooms she knew like her own. When the door was shut and they were alone he lifted her chin so she was forced to look at him. "What happened?"

Ramo swallowed and spoke. "I was daydreaming and burned one of the table linens. The lecture was well deserved my Lord." Being this close to him was more than she could bear and ramo slowly backed away. "I will replace it if you wish, it is what you would do with any of your other servants." She smiled at him as if to offer an apology. "I truly am sorry Eomer. Forgive me, please."

"All that over table linens?" Eomer shook his head. "Forget them!" he said, and walking over to the window, stared outside. A silly thing to get worked up over! he thought, and his eyes were drawn downwards by a new set of raised voices. It was an argument in the courtyard - but over what, he couldn't hear.

Almost, the King opened his mouth to send down a blistering reprimand, but didn't.

Turning around, Eomer saw that Ramo had just glanced quickly at the portrait on his wall... and abruptly, he understood. Everyone in the Palace - not only himself, was under a great deal of strain. Servants had been working in shifts both day and night... cleaning... polishing... and re-cleaning and repolishing... whatever anyone could think of to ensure it was 'just right' for when their future Queen arrived.

But... what could be done? He could order them all to stop, but that would serve no purpose. The intensity of it, however, was unnecessary. Rohan was Rohan... Edoras was Edoras... and he... was it's King.

Drawing himself up, Eomer shook his head. "Don't worry about it, Ramo," he repeated kindly, and nodded towards the door. "Go on... and come back later - we'll chat then."

Once she was well gone, Eomer King strode purposefully down to his office... and sent a messenger for the heads of his Palace Staff. When they arrived, he looked at them keenly. "It seems... that the servants are doing double-work these days," he said, and many of them nodded. "We need to be 'ready'..." one began, but Eomer held up a hand to stop him.

"The Palace is already as clean as I've ever seen it," he said, "I can imagine nothing further of any special effort is needed. From right now - everyone is to be back on their regular work-days!"

"But... my lord!" another protested, "The - the Princess!"

Eomer shook his head. "Are you planning to 'clean' like this every day - after she arrives?" he asked... sending the staff into silence. "No, my lord," answered the first, and exchanged glances with his fellows.

"Princess Lothiriel will 'see' Rohan as it is... as she comes through it - or are you planning to clean the Mark, too?" he inquired. There was a chorus of subdued, "No my lords" from the assembled. "Then," Eomer's voice was firm, "she will see this Palace as it 'is' - on every other day - is that clear?"

The King of Rohan waited until he'd received the assent from everyone, and then dismissed them from his presence. Alone again, he sighed deeply. Returning them to 'normal' duties should be a relief to everyone. - But, in silence, Eomer wondered if Lothiriel would truly see him... or even... if she wanted to...

"Well... Eomer king..." Lihtfota pondered awhile, trying to find the right words. "He's a good leader, and... unpretentious, yes. Probably more down-to-earth than the other kings before him, as my mother said. And he's kind, as far as I know. At least he doesn't tell if he catches me up on the roof - and he has, a lot of times - and he's good to his horses... And the staff, or just about anyone else, really... Well maybe he doesn't have the manners of your father here, but he's noble enough in his own way, and anyway he's well accepted by most, if not all of us... I would say the only drawback is that he has a rather... explosive temper."

She waited for Lothriel's reaction, nervous fingers winding repeatedly through her horse's mane. She could have omitted the part about Eomer's temper, but she had felt it would be better the tell Lothriel outright so she could judge for herself. Anyway, merely spewing out his good points would, in Lihtfota's opinion, sound rather insincere or even faked.

(( OOC: Just a thought here - whether it will help or not, I don't know. - But... I would think that Eomer and Prince Imrahil have at least met - during the WOR at Pelennor Field/The Morannen. They may not know each other 'well'... but it's something to 'go' on! ))

After a while Eomer left his office, and without 'seeming' to, began wandering the corridors. The word of his order was spreading, and he could feel a 'change' in the servants attitudes in those he passed by.

Calmer... happier... there were smiles on many faces when they greeted the King of Rohan with bows or bobbed curtseys. Smiling back in kind, Eomer was inwardly pleased with himself. It was a 'little' thing - and yet, 'not'... but he'd quickly learned that those were sometimes the most important. After all... he hadn't been 'trained' for kingship... and until his cousin's death, Eomer had had no expectations of filling his current rĂ´le.

But then... command of his Rohirrim Company had been no idle experience, either. Looking out for one'd Riders was a great part of that post - was it not? so Eomer had just carried that knowledge through to his people - both within, and without - the Golden Hall...

(( meh... A 'nothing' post, really... but I'm 'short' on them at the moment, and didn't want to totally 'waste' one on my previous OOC comment... - I wonder... would an OOC Thread be useful? ))

She hadn't meant to look at the portrait again but something about those eyes drew her. Eomer had caught her glancing at it and she wondered if he knew. But he said nothing more except that she was to resume her duties.

Down in the kitchens Cook avoided her except for a few black looks that would have withered a snake. Ramo quickly and quietly finished ironing the table linens and set them aside. She was making her way to her private apartments when she remembered that basket of clothing. Wet clothing that needed to be dried in the Rohan sunshine. This was one of the tasks she truly enjoyed. It gave her a chance to be outside in the fresh air and view her home land.

The wind whipped the garments until they looked like reveling dancers. Ramo stepped back and watched them before heading towards the stable. She laid the basket with the others by the door and walked down the long aisles petting the horses. "So many beauties. You're all just spoiled babies aren't you?" She laughed and drank deep of the musty home-like smell of the place she loved most.

Lothiriel pondered what Lihfota had said. " A temper?" she thought. It almost frightened her. She had no wish to be married to a man who would yell at her or perhaps hit her. She quickly shook these thoughts away. "I am being silly," she told herself. " Father would not marry me off to a man who would not treat me well." She heard horsehooves approaching and a messenger rode up to the Prince. " My lord," he began. " The Gap of Rohan has been emptied of the foul orcs and creatures that had dwelt there. I have stationed a few of my men to guard it until Eomer can rebuild its watchtower and set his own guards over it." Pausing he continued, " With the Gap of Rohan open to you, my lord, you can make it to Edoras in merely 2 days." The Prince thanked him and the messenger and his host rode away towards Dol Amroth. The day was waning, it was becoming twilight. They rode on for another three hours and then made camp at the foot of the forest. Imrahil posted a watch and then settled down by his daughter near the fire. " We have gained passage through the Gap of Rohan, my daughter. We can now reach Edoras sooner than hoped for. If all goes well, we will reach it in the afternoon the day after tomorrow." Lothiriel looked up at him and tried to hold back her tears. One rebel tear fell, though, and she dropped her raven head and tried to conceal what she felt. But her father could sense her grief. " Tell, me what troubles you, Lothiriel. What 'truly' troubles you." Lothirel paused and tried to gain control of her emotions. " I...I.. will miss Belfalas, and the sea and my garden outside my window." Drawing a deep breath she continued, " But not as much as I will miss you." And with that she could not hold back the tears. Her father took her in his arms and held her til she could cry no more and had fallen asleep. He stroked her raven hair and said to himself, " I will miss you more than you will ever know." He then laid her to sleep on the ground and covered her with a blanket. Biding good night to her maid, Niela, he himself turned in.

The rest of the day passed uneventfully for Eomer, to his relief. An evening ride before dinner helped - some, anyway - in the way of easing his mind. What would be - would be... not even as King could he change it.

In fact, Eomer was much more his 'usual' self at that meal, laughing, and joking with some of his old company - those who had survived the charges at Pelennor Field, and the Morannen. A teasing comment about his King's upcoming nuptuals, though, was difficult to let 'slide'. Outwardly, he replied in kind... but inside?

At length, though the night was still fairly young, Eomer rose, answered their bids for a peaceful sleep with a wave of his hand, and took himself to his rooms.

As he'd expected, Ramo was there... and - as she had for all these years - prepared them for her King's nightly slumber. But, with a smile, Eomer waved her into a chair by the crackling fire, while he took another. In his own eyes, Ramo was more than a 'servant'... she'd been a friend. Not quite someone Eomer could 'confide' in... but occasionally, they'd talked of more than just 'lighter' subjects. If Eowyn had been here... he could have unburdened his heart to his sister. - But... could he do so with Ramo? She'd been perceptive this morning, though...

Eomer was silent for a while, and then shook his head and sighed. "Why did I agree to this?" he asked rhetorically, since she knew the answer as well as her King. "Do you really think Lothiriel could learn to love me? Is she someone that I can love? - Am I being a fool to want that, Ramo? - Even in an arranged marriage?"

Ramo had just comfortably seated herself when Eomer's question sounded through the rooms. She closed her eyes and pondered how to answer this thing that was laying on his heart so heavily. She smiled and nodded. "It is not a foolish thing to wish for love. All beings have a need for it. But what is love except for an emotion?" Her gaze dropped to her hands knotted in her lap. "I suppose love could be learned. From what I hear she is a kind young woman, and you know her Father. Indeed he has stayed in Meduseld a number of times. Could a man like him raise a wayward daughter?" She looked up at him studying his face for some kind of reaction to her words. "Besides my Lord there is much about you that is not disagreeable. You are a hardworker, very kind and just. And not bad looking if gossip holds." Ramo crossed the short distance between them to stand before him. "Eomer I echo my words of this morning. If Lotheriel is given the chance she will hold dear all this is here. If she is allowed time. She is young and this will probably be her first time away from what she has known all her life. Give her time my King." She curtsied and made her way to her rooms. The silent tears forged silver paths down her cheeks as she readied herself for bed.

For a long moment, Eomer stared at the closed door. Ramo was right, though... not that he expected that it wouldn't take 'time'. But still, what bothered him was the near-zealous 'reassurances' of the Dol Amroth Ministers. - And, yes, he knew Prince Imrahil, and the King of Rohan had no 'qualms' about Lothiriel's upbringing.

With a sigh, he finally retired. Eomer would just have to wait until his future bride's party arrived in Edoras...

(( sorry so short - and... does Eomer know about the Gap? Was it he who sent to clear it? i.e. - does he know they'll be there in two days? ))

OOC: No, Prince Imrahil had sent scouts out and they found the orcs and sent word back to Dol Amroth for help in clearing it. Word of this hasn't gotten to Eomer yet, but I can fix that.

A messenger, clad in the garb of a soldier from Dol Amroth, rode up to the Golden Hall at nightfall. He asked for an audience with the King. " I must deliever my message to the King immediately, please." he told the guards and they nodded and let him through. He was shown to Eomer's quarters where the guard knocked on the door and announced, " My lord, you have a visitor who demands to see you immediately. His errand is one of utmost importance." The two men waited near the door for Eomer to open it.

(( OOC: Ok, lol, thanks a bunch! I wasn't sure! ))

Half-asleep, Eomer jumped when there was a sudden 'banging' on his door. At once alert, he instinctively leapt out of bed, and yanked his belt-knife from it's sheath.
" My lord, you have a visitor who demands to see you immediately. His errand is one of utmost importance."

Old habits die slowly! Eomer thought, thinking of years past when that kind of vigilance was necessary.

Tossing the weapon back onto the table, Eomer King strode swiftly to the door, and opened it. "Well?" he demanded, letting the messenger in, and eyed him keenly. "Those are Dol Amroth's colors!" he blurted, seeing the unique design on the man's badge.

All at once, Eomer's mouth was dry. Had something 'happened' to Lothiriel on the Journey? he wondered, and even (perhaps) 'worse'... Had his bride-to-be changed her mind... and this messenger here to tell him? "Speak!" Eomer repeated, and the Rohanian King frowned to cover his concerns...

The messenger bowed low to the King. " My lord, I bring word from the Prince Imrahil. He has sent soldiers to retake the Gap of Rohan and they have been successful. With this passage open to them, he says, they will be able to arrive at Edoras within 2 days. He hopes this will not be an inconvienience to you, my lord. He also requests that you send your own men to relieve his soldiers of the task of guarding the Gap. He agrees to man it until help arrives." The messenger again bowed and left the king's quarters.
