My sis is terrible when it comes to all the cahracters in the films.

e.g. Eomer galopping through Rohan, sis: "Is that Faramir?"
or Strider in Bree, sis: "That's Eomer, right?"

Aaaaargh!!! :nono:

But isn't it amazing what questions people ask??? (even while actually watching the movies!!)

When people ask me why they didn't just fly on the eagles I tell them, "They did. That was Tolkien's first version of the book. But it was only three pages long, an no one would publish it. so he had to rewrite it."

My mom and I were discussing LotR over supper and we came to discuss Elves and Men and things like this.

Her: Elrond had a brother right?
Me: Yes
Her: Oh, I know, he's the one who had to choose his race and chose to go with Men!
Me: Right. he became the first King of Numénor.
Her: It's Gil-galad!
(Me: :banghead: )

*Facepalm while laughing* You're lucky, my mom and I never talk about LOTR...I think it's too confusing for her.

Oooh, poor Linwe:hug:

A few stupid conversations:

*During RotK, at Cirith Ungol*
Uncle: Ah, a tower. So is this the Three Towers?
Me: :twitch: No, this is the Return of the King.

*Sometime during TT EE*
Uncle: So these Two Towers, I haven't seen them yet.
Me: Orthanc and the Dark Tower. At least it is in the movies.
Uncle: Orthanc's the one with the eye, right?

*During RotK EE*
Uncle #2 (a different one): So, this Gollum, what is he?
Me: *explains*
Uncle #2: So does he have any connections with the magician who fell down from the tower?

When people ask me why they didn't just fly on the eagles I tell them, "They did. That was Tolkien's first version of the book. But it was only three pages long, an no one would publish it. so he had to rewrite it."

*lol* I had a similar experience. This was a conversation between me and my friends (I'm Dutch but I live in Norway):

Me: *writing in Tengwar*
Them: Wow... what are those signs?
Me: It's actually an ancient Dutch alphabet.
Them: Really? I thought the Dutch used the same alphabet as us!
Me: Yes, usually we just use the A-Z one. But the Netherlands actually has two official alphabets, and even though this one here is hardly ever used you still learn it, and laws and things have to be written in both alphabets.
Them: Wow... I didn't know that!

Yes, they actually believed me. Until I started laughing

Lets see... Well Meme was watching FotR with me and kept asking 'Is she/he a crook?' Most of the time she was referring to Galadriel or Elrond.

My friend: "It doesn't really matter what order I read the trilogy in, right? It definitely seems better to just start with the second one."

My cousin, who just finished AP English and got a large academic scholarship: "Unfinished Tales? That's by J.R.R. Tolkien? Didn't he write... what's it callled... Lord of the Rings?"

But I'm usally the one asking the stupid questions, lol, since I'm not that familiar with the movies. Yesterday I couldn't figure out if a picture were of Boromir or Faramir... it turned out to be Éomer.

Most of my friends know at least the basic LotR plot (probably because I've told them so many times). One time though I was dropping something off at one of my younger friends house and her friend from school was over (I think her name was CJ). We started talking about LotR.

CJ blurts out: What about the pickle guy? Wasn't he in there too?
Me glancing over at my equally confused friend: *blink, blink* Who?
CJ: You know, the pickle guy! The one with the ring thing.
Me: Frodo?
CJ: Ya that's him, I think. He's always wearing green so he looks like a pickle!
Me: :twitch:

Then there's my father and his 'inventive' pronunciation:

Froido (Frodo)
Fairimir (Faramir)
Isendur (I think he means Isildur)
Not to mention 'Warsh'

Don't feel to bad, Skadhi. When I first started reading I kept getting Merry and Pippin confused too

I think my sister and I are the only LotR-learned people in my family...A few examples:

My father: So, why are they making another film? I thought it ended last time? (watching TTT trailer...)

My mother: I still don't understand the role of the Orcs...

My mother, again, after I explained to her (for the hundredth time!) that Orcs used to be Elves etc: But...why are they so ugly if they're Elves?

Another one, this time from my best friend's grandmother, watching TTT trailer and discovering Gollum:: Who is that ET? I thought you said it wasn't a Sci-fi movie? :banghead:

Oh yeah, my dad used "inventive" pronunciation too! Like he always pronunces Orc "Ocre" and I think he once said "Aragone" for Aragorn... :nono:

First of all, apparently someone thinks Bilbo is Frodo's Grandpa. Also, speaking of pronunciations, my step dad says "TolkEIN", and he says that with emphasis for some reason (he was explaining that he doesn't like LotR)... And one time I wore a Merry and Pippin shirt to school...

Person: Lemme see your shirt.
Me: *shows shirt*
Person: Who are they?
Me: Merry and Pippin.
Person: Are they a band?
Me: No... they're hobbits...
Person: What's a hobbit?
Me: They're from LotR...
Person: Ooohhh...

People do ask stupid questions... indeed...

-What is lord of the Rings?
-Isn't lord of the Rings some harry potter story?
-Why don't the orcs and men talk about it instead of fighting? :banghead:

My vote on the craziest quote someone posted on here was the one where someone said something like, "I don't like LotR, Tolkien totally copied JK Rowling!" Haahahhahah!

LOL!

Once my Algebra teacher and I were talking a little about LOTR and she's like "I like Eragon..."

I think she meant Aragorn...But she was the only adult I knew who liked the books, so I didn't have the heart to correct her.

lol... A few conversations I've had with my cousin:

Cousin: I can't remember how LotR ended.
Me: Well, Frodo and Sam got to Mt. Doom, Frodo didn't want to destroy the Ring but he put it on. Then Gollum came and bit of Frodo's finger with the Ring on it, and then he fell down into the lava, taking the Ring with him.
Cousin: Ah, okay. Was there another book after that?

Cousin: Who's the hobbit in "The Hobbit"?
Me: Bilbo
Cousin: Bilbo's a hobbit?

*sigh*

OK the two questions I get around here that drive me almost arrg...

"Have you seen Gandalf Lately?"
Like I just came from the Undyinglands?

And "Is there Lembas in your purse?"

Like I'd give free Lembas to a Human who has more money then I do?

Now a homeless Elf is another thing altogether... I'd bake Lembas for them!
Course the best I can do for wraping up Lembas is Grapeleaves...
but that might suffice in a pinch, for a very hungry Elf... or Hobbit.

Yes I feed stray Hobbits to...

OK so I am somewhat arrogant... fooey!

Okay, I think the most silly question I got asked was by an acquaintance after we had seen the Return of the King in theaters for the first time. I had read all the books, but she was one of those girls who only went to see the film for Legolas...grrrrrr!!!! Anyways, here is our conversation upon departing the theater:

Her: I'm confused, though...how come Frodo still had to carry the ring to Mt. Doom even after Sauron had been defeated?

Me: (caught off guard) Sorry, what? Sauron was defeated when Smeagol fell with the ring into the fires of Mt. Doom.

Her: But Eowyn had already defeated Sauron, remember? At the big battle on the fields she killed him and the serpent.

Me: NO! NO! NO! (holds head in hands)That was the head of the ringwraiths that she killed, not Sauron! Sauron is the big eye...remember? He was defeated after Smeagol fell with the ring into Mt. Doom!

Her: Oh...ahhhh, I get it now!

Needless to say, I was positively tearing my hair out with the thought that she had watched the whole three and a half hour movie without understanding who the main villian was!
