(Check the ooc before joining…and contact me before posting. This takes place in the Fourth Age, about twenty years into the reign of Aragorn. Realistic characters only…no godmodding either.)

“Adarin!” the young girl cried, racing to keep with her older brother. “Wait up!”

“Come on then, Leyn!” Adarin replied, slowing his pace to allow his sister to catch up to him. “Father won’t wait for us.”

“But where are we going?” the girl, Leyn, insisted, her breathing becoming staggered as she reached Adarin.

“Father says that we are headed towards Amon Hen on the morrow,” Adarin answered, finally slowing down as the pair reached the band. There were about thirty people, men, women, and children alike, in the group. The brother and sister’s parents, Éodath and Mynethe, headed the band of wanderers that roamed the lands in and around Gondor and Rohan. They were a peaceful band, never attacking travelers nor burdening cities and villages with their presences.

“But why to Amon Hen? I thought Father wanted to return to Edoras,” Leyn said, holding a stitch in her side.

A large handsome man ceased his strolling and stopped in front of the siblings. Placing his hands on their shoulders, he said in a smooth baritone voice, “Well met, my dears. It is about time you have returned to us. How was your venture?”

“We were only gone for a night, Papa,” Leyn replied, cocking her head and looking at her father, Éodath, out of the corner of her eye.

“Still, it never hurts to spend a night or two away from us,” Éodath said, smoothing his daughter’s brown hair tenderly.

“Of course not, Father,” Adarin said with all his wisdom of twelve years.

The dream shifted from a friendly memory to a melancholy one.

Leyn rode towards the band, her expert hands guiding the willful stallion beneath her on. It had been two months since she had left for the first time on her own. Her midnight-black horse, Verelin, covered the ground easily. She was only nineteen, a bit young to be alone, but Leyn had the skills to survive should the occasion arise.

As Verelin started to edge up the crest that lined the valley where the band was at the moment, roughly twenty miles west of Edoras, Leyn could tell something wasn’t right. There were plumes of smoke rising into the air and no noises could be heard. Verelin whickered fretfully as he reached the top of the rise and halted, his ears swiveling here and there to catch any sounds. There was dead silence.

The scene that awaited her was horrific. There were the remains of wagons and horses everywhere. The iron smell of blood filled her nose, and Leyn gagged. She urged Verelin down the slope, and as he reached the bottom, the mighty stallion broke into a hard gallop. Soon enough, Leyn saw a pile of what looked like bodies smoldering into ashes. Her senses reeled, and tears filled her eyes when she spotted her wagon, lying on its side with a hole in the side.

“What happened?” she asked herself in a strangled voice. No one answered. “Is there anyone here?” she cried aloud now, hoping beyond hope that there was someone alive. Silence. She dismounted Verelin and cautiously made her way towards the pile of bodies. Leyn ‘s insides heaved when she recognized her mother’s ring lying on the ground and her father’s cross beside it. Too ironic the situation was. “Mama, Papa,” Leyn whispered, tears choking her throat. But there was no sign of Adarin. A faint hope lit her heart, but she wouldn’t believe it until she knew more.

Llweryn, called Leyn by most, awoke with a start. The ebony sky rose above her with stars splattered across the horizon. It was about midnight, and the fire was slowly beginning to burn down. The maiden pulled branches and bracken towards the fire, and it began to take hold. She sat up and held her head. The third time the scene had visited her in a dream. What did it mean?

Leyn was in the middle of an old forest outside of Minas Tirith. She laid amidst loam in a clearing, her tumultuous thoughts running hither and yon through her mind. The next morning, if the weather held for the wind hinted of rain, she would visit the Red Fox Inn in a village two miles away and rest herself. The maiden had been traveling for over three months since leaving Minas Tirith, and somehow she managed to arrive so near to where she started. There was no purpose for Leyn whatsoever. She had no lover, no family, no nothing other than Verelin. The stallion was grazing near her, his contented sighs reaching her keen ears. They were meant to be together, she thought, shivering with the cold of the autumn night.

The rustlings of the woods at night were nothing new to Leyn, and so she was not afraid, but when an unfamiliar sound came to her ears, she stood and retrieved her sword, Hwethgwynar. Verelin lifted his head and pricked his ears forward, striving to catch the noise. Seating herself near the fire, with her back to whoever was approaching, Leyn waited calmly, no emotion , not even surprise, showing on her face. Her only words were, “You are welcome to join me by the fire if you wish.” Her tone was courteous, with not much friendliness in it. Leyn was not one to make friends easily; her life experiences had taught her that.

(note: Llweryn is pronounced yuh-wehr-in)

“I thank you.” was the calm reply. A girl moved out of the shadows, eyeing the stiff backed woman
coolly. She dropped the reigns of the horse she was leading, who went to sniff over the other horse, with more friendliness than her mistress. She noticed the drawn sword, the worn, dirty cloak and the woman’s emotionless face. The girl made her way to the opposite side of the fire, where her opponent could see her clearly.

(Hopefully this suits you, Dinenlasse! I've got to get back into RPing my elves - it's been too long! Edit: Eleiel, I didn't see your post before! It's been edited. )

It was strange, even in these times of peace, for a maiden, whether mortal or immortal, to travel far abroad without escort. Mordor may have been overthrown, and certainly the roads were safer because of it, but some men still had a shadow of malice in their hearts. Vagabonds and thieves roved the lands, camping in glades and hidden places beside the networks of roads, waiting for unsuspecting journeyers to ensare. Greed propelled them; pockets jingling with coins and merchants' pouches of gold were ever their goal.

Yet, a traveler need not despair. As dangerous as the roads could be, the fear of setting foot outside the front door and continuing down the path was more dangerous. For if someone was to be so paralyzed by that fear that they were incapable of spreading their heart's wings and flying, then what life could they lead? To what point and purpose was tomorrow, then? Dreams were to be wonderfully wild and extravagant. Aspirations were to be chased. The road was meant to be travelled. Life, as uncertain and unfettered as it was, was to be lived.

Hingaer, in keeping with this idealogy, was living. Years, to her, were not yet burdensome things, though that heaviness was beginning to weigh upon her thoughts. Her age of one hundred and ten, especially in the eyes of her people, was a meager length of time when compared to the millenia-old lifetimes of older Elves. Not all deeds had been done, nor every place seen and the lovely, storm-eyed coast-daughter still met opportunities, whether new or not, with the entusiasm of the young.

What brought her here, to the woods and by-ways of Gondor, was simple enough -- she had sought the Mallos flower of Lebennin. Perhaps a foolish reason for so long a journey, but the small, still living bunch tucked snugly into the outer-pocket of her knapsack was reward enough.

Hingaer, a traveler accustomed to midnight-darkened byways, had been headed North again, when she, with ears keen and elven-sharp, first heard the fading cracks and pops of a slowly dying fire. It was Hírdhae, though, who alerted her to the earthy presence of another animal. Together, and with skillful quietness, the Elf and her companion drew closer. Hingaer, her sea-borne eyes well-adjusted to the dimness, peered into the barren camp of a young mortal woman. She had been prone in dream-wrought sleep when the smaller, paler-eyed Elf first cast glance on her. Yet, now, she sat, awake and left to ponder the images that seemed to haunt her just moments before.

It was then that Hírdhae's paw struck and crushed, in careless fashion, the delicate skeleton of a dead, cast-off twig. It gave a resounding crack that split the blanket of darkness wide open. Hingaer grimaced, turning a dismayed eye on the oblivious spaniel, who was proceeding, without prior thought, towards the clearing. His only preoccupation was the faded smell of supper and the hopes of salvaging some. The Elf maiden's, on the other hand, was their safety. She glanced towards the woman, who now had her sword in hand, when she spoke, offering a spot by the fire. Hingaer breathed a noiseless sigh and, giving the dog a silent command to stop and stay, slipped forward until she stood just behind the treeline, hidden yet in shadow. Hírdhae had ventured forward, nuzzling the mud-splattered skirts of his Elven friend's traveling gown, and was gathered up into the protective, easy embrace.

"I thank you for your hospitality, Lady Wanderer," replied the Elf in slightly accented Westron. She, weaponless and with hands decidedly full with spaniel, stepped into the soft, orange glow of the now-steadily burning fire just as another young woman did the same. "Yet, I do not wish to intrude. My path but led me past your camp and on into the starlit vales and glades I should continue." She addressed the chestnut-haired woman, her world-wise, elven gaze resting steadily on her sleep-tousled hair.

Leyn looked from one figure to the other that stood before her; one was decidedly an elf, the other human. Both seemed inconspicuous, of hardly more danger than Verelin, and so she relaxed, but not visibly. Leyn sheathed Hwethgwynar and stood, her demeanor serous but not cold. “Neither of you have intruded upon anything,” she said abruptly, gesturing to her meager camp. “I haven’t much in the way of food, but you are welcome to something so that you could have some sort of a repast.” Her eyes clouded in the flickering firelight. “My name is Llweryn,” she said in the way of introduction, “but Leyn will do.”

She leaned against a tree and surveyed her company as they seated themselves by the fire. Verelin whickered and returned to grazing; there was no threat from either of these visitors. Leyn’s thoughts returned to her dream, mainly the latter part. She had been certain for the past six years that her brother Adarin was alive; after all she hadn’t seen his body when she had arrived at the terrible scene so long ago. Leyn gave an involuntary shudder; she hated to relive that memory, but she had done it just this night, and now she would have to dwell on it for longer than she wanted to.

Her vision swam in front of her eyes, and she was with the band on their way to Edoras to visit family of her father’s. This had been just prior to Leyn leaving on her own for the first time, the same fateful trip from which she would return to find her people massacred.

“Papa, are you sure you want me to go?” Leyn asked as she plaited her chestnut hair and wound it into a knot.

“Of course, love. Why wouldn’t I?” Éodath replied as they rode at the front of the band, their mounts in perfect step.

“Don’t you think I am too young?” she inquired, still the child that asked questions, even though she was nineteen.

Éodath shook his head. “Not at all. When I was your age, I was traveling on my own as well. How do you think you can survive on your own unless by gaining experience?”

“I suppose you are right,” Leyn allowed, sighing heavily.

Her mother, Mynethe, came bustling towards them with a satchel of food and other things. “Here you are, Leyn,” she said, handing the satchel to her daughter. “There is enough to last you a goodly while. You know where to find us when you return.”

Tears filled Leyn’s eyes. “Of course, Mama.”

The pair of riders dismounted, and Éodath hugged his daughter. “Take care, my dear, and we shall see you in three months’ or more time,” he said.

“Yes, Papa,” was all she could manage out. She hugged her mother, and both parents kissed her forehead and let her go. Leyn remounted Verelin and waved goodbye to her parents. As she started off, Adarin galloped up to her and said, “And when shall I see you again, dear sister?” he asked, a broad smile on his handsome face.

“Three months or so,” Leyn replied. “Take care of Mama and Papa while I am gone, will you?”

“You know I will,” Adarin said. “Safe journey then, Leyn.”

“And you as well.”

Adarin saluted her and rode back to the band, and Leyn set off again. She was really alone, for the first time in her life, she was truly alone.

Leyn came back to reality with a start. Tears sprang to her eyes, and she wiped them away hurriedly so as not to be noticed.

(Sorry about all of the memories. I thought that they would be something a bit out of the ordinary. I promise that they won't be as lengthy in the future, and there won't be many more!!!)

Singalice dragged her wondering gaze from the elf woman and looked at the woman whose camp she was now sharing. She saw the tears on her cheeks before Leyn hastily wiped them away. Singalice could almost smell the sadness that Leyn carried hidden away. What sad memories must haunt this woman, she thought to her self. It renewed in her the knowledge of how sheltered her life had been in Frea’s household, even in these troubled times. Suddenly, for the first time since she had left, she found she missed Frea and Gerolth. And especially Beomunde, with his funny laugh and teasing ways.

Now she was in a strange world where immortals seemingly popped out of the ground and strange women with mournful thoughts offered a cold hospitality. Singalice shook her self. Is that not why she left? So she could turn this wide-eyed innocence, that did not fit her 19 years, to wisdom? She sighed; I have a long way to go yet.

Casting another glance the elf and the mortal women she went to unsaddle Gwenhyfira and make sure she was behaving.

(Pah. I thought I'd get to this sooner. Sorry for the wait, my friends. And, of course, the fact that this will be much shorter than the norm. Haven't had my breakfast yet, so me muse refuses to work.)

The young woman, once again, extended an invitation. Reluctantly, Hingaer moved further into the firelight and sank, with an elven grace, by its warmth. She kept the flop-eared dog on her lap, his curious nature and sometimes daring escapades warranting that that would be the safer place for him. And, he sat there, content, if a bit too large for the slender Elf that held him.

Her sea-eyes, her namesake, with their bright and steady intesity, slid from one mortal woman to the other, the curiosity of Singalice and the cold regard of Llweryn absent from her gaze. Instead, there shone a calm indifference and something older, wiser and unfathomable -- the ancient shrewdness of the Elves, perhaps? She did not offer a smile when she met the inquisitive, blue-eyed glance of the younger woman, though her own keen eyes twinkled with that missing gesture. It was obvious that the golden-haired Singalice was no world traveler. Her innocence, the trait Elves admired most about the Second Born, was something of a beacon to Hingaer, who herself had never had the wide-eyed naivete. She could also tell, by intuition (what some, lesser educated mortals might mistakenly call "Elf magic"), that the maiden before her thought otherwise about her ignorance. Inwardly, and with the world-weariness of someone who had never had but treasured innocence and a simple life, she sighed, wondering at mortals who thought the life of a rover was something to strive towards.

It would seem each woman, whether First Born or Second, was lost to the turbulence of her own thoughts. Hingaer had retreated from her's in time to catch the glittering tears that stung at and escaped from Leyn's eyes. She did not puzzle over the sudden emotions, for it was not her place to question the young woman's sadness. What misdeeds and cruelty Fate had shown her was unknown, but undoubted by Hingaer.

She stared into the flickering flames before her. "It is nothing to be ashamed of," the Elf stated, casting an off-handed, sideways glance at Leyn. "Tears are the badges of courage for a wounded heart. It means you have the strength to go on, but the sensitivity to look back." She smiled benevolently. "I am Hingaer. Sea Eyes, if you'd rather, and I thank you, Lady, for your hospitality."

Leyn came to herself quickly and resumed her stony silence. She was not much given to conversation with many; not because she disliked people per se, but the maiden was more of the type to seek solitude. Nonetheless, Leyn would help out those who she deemed in need of her aid. She would even extend a hand to help a Rider of Rohan or a Ranger of Ithilien (both of whom, one must remember, had killed members of her band from time to time). She bore no grudges against them, as it was against her nature, but Leyn would never take the leap and attempt to become friends with them. Wary she was around both groups of warriors because of their part in her family’s demise, but as her father had been a Ranger at one point, they were a part of her as well.

Her thoughts as tumultuous as ever, Leyn spoke again to her would-be companions. “There is no need to thank me. I am sure you would do the same in my place.” She hesitated for a moment before inquiring, “If you don’t mind my asking, where are all of you bound? I myself am headed for the Red Fox Inn somewhere around here. I do know where ‘tis, but I am wondering if one of you is headed that way as well.”

Leyn’s tendency to remain alone was being tested. For once she wanted a companion, even if it was just until she reached the inn. “If you are lost, but I doubt you are, I can lead you out of here to a safe place if need be.” A weak smile appeared on her tired face only to be replaced by a thoughtful frown. If only I could be at the inn now, Leyn thought. The moon is bright, and I can see…why not leave now?

Because, her logical side kicked in, it is better to travel by daylight. You will only get yourself into danger. Leyn sighed and waited on the answers of her companions.

Singalice retuned as the mortal woman, Leyn, was speaking; “If you don’t mind my asking, where are all of you bound? I myself am headed for the Red Fox Inn somewhere around here. I do know where ‘tis, but I am wondering if one of you is headed that way as well.” Here she paused, and Singalice looked curiously at her. “If you are lost,” Leyn continued, “though I doubt you are, I can lead you out of here to a safe place if need be.” The Red Fox must be a popular place Singalice thought wryly, that Aunt Frea and Llweryn both speak of it. Trying to look nonchalant, despite her rising excitement Singalace placed her blanket and haversack on the ground and dropped beside them. She threw a quick glance at the elf-woman, who did not speak.

“I would be most grateful if you could, lady. My aunt has a friend at the Red Fox whom I wish to visit, but I am lost.” She smiled ironically, “I took the wrong pass through the mountain and misplaced my way.” Now, she thought, what is that phrase? The die is cast, or something like that. It did not quite fit the situation, but it was all she could think of in her tired state. Leyn, and perhaps the elf could be my traveling companions for a day. She looked from the stony faced mortal to the other worldly calm of the sea-eyed one. So be it.

Singalice bowed her head and listened for the reply of either woman

He followed the coin through his fingers, it glided acrossed his bare knuckles and back. He flipped it into the air and caught it, looking down at the body below. The horse beside him sniffed the once living, and snorted in disgust.
"He was a simple thief...a waste of time." Sol murmured as he put the coin into a sack tied to his belt.
"This coin will prove that I killed him. It will have to, for I will not be traveling with that thing tied to my back." he said as he walked over the still man and continued to check the rest of his pockets. The horse stomped impatiently. Reapplying his gloves, Solvenlin, closed the man's eyes and prayed a silent prayer, directing it to the Halls of Mandos.
"Don't know why I bother..." he said to himself as he walked back to his stallion and pulled his cloak closer to him. He eyed his surroundings after he lifted himself up to a mount.

This forest, was thick and best not traveled through during the night, however Sol did not want to linger with the dead and decided he would find a spot elsewhere to camp until morning.

Hallow was having hard time trying to pick his way through the forest in the dark. The horse tried to avoid large roots which stuck up from the ground and nickered in frustration when he hit another. "I will find a place so--" he stopped himself as he heard voices nearby. He dismounted quietly and grabbed Hallow's reigns leading the horse.

Between the trees he could see the glow of a fire and three beings warming themselves beside it. One, Sol, quickly identified as an elf. They always stuck out from the crowd, their sharp poise and deep eyes. Sol gazed at her momentarily, but it dawned on him, it being a she-elf, she knew he was there, due to their excellent hearing. So not wanting to cause any alarm he strode forward leading Hallow.

As he got closer he saw it was two maidens and the she-elf. All eyes turned to him, except that of the elf, who knew he was already there.

"No meaning to intrude, my presences was already known and I thought I would share your fire until morning." he said in a low voice, trying not to seem unfriendly in any manner.

Hingaer offered a smile to her two companions. Her storm-tossed eyes, so similiar to the seas, slid from one young woman to the other, contemplation lurking in their grey-blue depths. She was headed the other way, it seemed; back North again to Imladris. Or, perhaps, if Fate should steer her path otherwise, to some other elven realm. Lorien, perhaps, though it had faded from its previous glory. Then again, it may have been that the Powers saw fit to lead her off on another adventure.

"My path, I thought, led me back home again," Hingaer stated. Her hand, with fingers long and delicate, strayed over the bi-colored fur of her canine friend, and she continued. "Though, I would not lament nor pass by yet another route. My days have been spent in the wilds, perhaps this inn you speak of would prove a pleasant reprieve."

She could afford a rest. "If you mind not, Llweryn, I too will come." Of course, the Elf had no horse. She had not needed one. Hírdhae had proved to be wonderful if, at times, rambunctious company and together they had come from Rivendell, traveling East over the Misty Mountains. It had been a slow, but steady journey; the dog and Elf were able to pass through territory that would have only hindered a horse. Yet, Hingaer was unconcerned. If need be, she could follow the two women and meet up with them again at the Red Fox.

It was then, in the silence that followed, that Hingaer noticed the grunting effort of horse; a horse who, without elven-born (or learned) agility, had stumbled and tripped in the heavy underbrush. The hooves struck root once again and the sound of two, booted feet thudding against the ground followed. The dog on her lap turned towards the still far-off commotion, his black nose twitching in the dusky midnight gloom. Hingaer seemed to take no notice, even when a voice, quiet and masculine, could be heard reassuring his less than sure-footed steed.

The man drew closer, his horse behind him, and stepped into the glow of the firelight. He mentioned that his presence was not unknown. The Elf smiled to herself. So he had spotted her and recognized her for what she was. Her keen eyes turned to him then and she offered a greeting, "Mae govannen, traveler."

Hilderinc wandered around in the forest, he was cold and starved. He rode at a very slow pace, he was lost and confused.
Hilderinc brushed a stray strand of his brownish blonde, wavy hair out of his face. The rest of his hair had mostly fallen out of the ponytail and hung behind his ears.
Hilderinc had been traveling with some other Riders of Rohan, but they had been attacked suddenly in the night, by whom he did not know. Everyone had been killed except himself, and now he was wandering around alone.
Hilderinc didn't know how far away from Rohan he was, or how long it had been since the attack.
Hilderinc was leaning far forward in his saddle, he was too tired to stay upright anymore.
Then Hilderinc fell from the back of his horse, Darkfire. Hilderinc lay there, he had a wound on his side, you could see it because his armor, that was obviosuly Rohirric, had been broken by the blow and the wound was crusted with blood. He had tried to clean it and use his wisdom with herbs to heal it, but he was too weak at this point.
Then Hilderinc heard the sound of people talking and dragged himself over. All he wanted was to eat, then he knew he would be able to properly heal his wound.
But he was tired as well as hungry, for he had ridden for many nights, and he fell asleep before he reached the voices and the smell of fire and food.

(I hope this works)

Leyn closed her eyes wearily, her tired face illuminated in the flickering firelight. "Hingaer, Singalice, friends all, you are all welcome to come with me to the Red Fox in on the morrow, but it is late now, and I propose we rest until dawnbreak when we can leave this wood and journey on. But as always with being in a strange place, we need to post sentries, and I do not mind taking that role until dawn which isn't so far away." With that said, Leyn leaned against a tree and called Verelin towards her, the ebony stallion's hoofsteps as soft as a whisper in the night.

Then she heard the sound of crashing nearby. Verelin whickered and wound his way into the woods, his mistress behind him. He found a man asleep on the ground, the iron smell of blood on him.

Leyn knelt by his side and awoke him gently. "Friend," she whispered in a gentle voice, "I can help you. Come with me to my camp." She awaited for his reaction, but then she saw that he had the look of a Rider, and she stiffened. Riders never seemed to be her friends, but nonetheless the man was in need. "Come quickly!" she shouted to the others. "I need help!"

(I hope this works for you, Elfmaiden.)

(thats fine)

Hilderinc was surprised to see this maiden by his side, then he remembered where he was. Bad memories flooded back into his mind of the attack at his camp, he could almost smell the scent of death.
Hilderinc pushed himself to his feet. He was hunched over and he gripped his the wound with his hand, it was begining to sting terribly.
"I can take care of the wound, all I ask for is some food so I might gain my strength back." Hilderinc said, he walked over and sat down by the fire.
His horse Darkfire followed him.
Hilderinc ate what he was given very quickly. As soon as he finished he thanked the maiden and began to work on his wound.
He first took off his armor, then he was able to reach the wound easier.
He soon had it cleaned and wrapped.
He laid down, he knew these people would want to know who he was and why he was alone, but he was too weary to answer questions now, so he fell asleep without another word.

Singalice sat quietly by the sleeping man letting the day’s exhaustion wash over her. Two more travelers had joined the women. In her heart Singalice felt slightly nervous at traveling with men especialy ones she knew nothing about. At least one was a Rider of Rohan, and he was hurt. In this night filled with strange things she clung to something that was familiar; battle wounds. Singalice lightly touched his forehead; there was no fever, even though she could tell that the wound was a couple of hours old. She leaned her head back against a convenient tree and closed her eyes. Tomorrow they would head for the Inn, and perhaps this adventure would settle down and be more like what she had read about. Singalice could not help smiling at that thought; unkle Gerolth said that ‘adventure’ only happens to other people, when it happens to you it is ‘trouble’.

With that thought on her mind, she fell into as fitful a sleep as the wounded rider.

Sol settled himself a few feet away from the others. They all seemed to be strangers and thus he wanted to remain just that....a stranger. He had no desire to mingle with others who themselves never intended to mingle.

He sat up against a tree, never offering to take a watch while the others slept. He figured, every man...woman for themselves. Hallow nawed on grass close by, chewing rather loudly, his bridle jingling in the night. Noticing this, Sol picked a long blade of grass and bit the end off of it and began to suck on the stem. The taste was horrible but chewing on the stem gave him something to do as he waited the blesings of sleep to fall upon him.

A handful ,if I'm lucky, for killing that soundrel. Maybe if I mentioned he put up quite the fight I could get more...he thought to himself. No, Citadel captains have never been generous when it comes to the common criminal...

He continued to let his thoughts wonder. Sol casually gazed to the dimming light to see the wounded soldier had been properly taken care of. He wondered why one of the Rohirrim had ended up all the way in Minas Tirith. Must have been a chase of some sort...or maybe a band of thieves. The thoughts of a band of criminals made Sol wonder if maybe he would get another job upon his arrival to Minas Tirith.

The maidens had discussed upon stopping at a Red Fox inn. He did not recognize the name, despite his many wonderings. Of course, he never really traveled a road, for those he sought after knew better than to trod an open path. He could tell you how to get through this forest with a blindfold, yet he still knew nothing of an inn nearby. He smirked to himself at the thought and turned his head upward looking at the silent stars peeking behind stretched branches. He pulled his cloak closer to him and pulled the hood upon his head. He spat out the blade of grass he had been chewing and settled himself once more, closing his eyes. Hopefully sleep would come and go quickly and he would no longer have to wait on the bittersweetness known as night.

Leyn returned to her post by the tree and mused. Too many different companions, and I wanted to travel alone, she thought to herself. But perhaps it is that I shouldn't be alone for this. She had never mentioned her purpose for going to the Red Fox. A rumor had been circulating that a man had been traveling around looking for his sister. The man described was of Gondorian build, almost like a Ranger, with dark hair and blue eyes. A handsome man, it was said. Leyn leaned her head against the tree and sighed. The rumor had come from the barkeeper at the inn, and Leyn was headed there to find the truth of it.

Verelin stood near her, wary as any prey animal to the sounds of the night and any impending enemy. But he was calm now, his hind leg cocked slightly as he slept. Leyn stroked him gently; this was her best friend, but perhaps one of these that shared her camp would become a human friend. One or two wasn't always a bad thing. Her eyes roved over all of them, and they landed on the one man who sat at the edge of camp. She saw him lay down, but in the morning, Leyn would seek him out and find out more about him.

(I am talking about Sol, btw.)

Shouts and crys filled the night. "Hilderinc! Help! many shouted for him, Hilderinc ran to their aid but they were slaughtered before he could kill the enemy. Then something grabbed his ankle. He jumped and looked down, it was his commander. "Run Hilderinc, it is all you can do now. Go and warn the King that our mission has failed." The Commander said. Then Hilderinc turned and started to mount his horse when he felt a shocking pain in his side, an ugly faced smiled at him.

"No!" Hilderinc shouted. he bolted upright, which he immdiately regretted.
He looked around, the sun's rays were just bursting through the trees.
Sweat covered Hilderinc's face and he wiped it quickly. Then he stood and walked over to his horse.
He laid his head against Darkfire's neck. "I had another dream about it Darkfire. I believe that night will haunt me till the day I die." Hilderinc whispered.
Then he saw that the others were awake. He decided to stay with them, if that was alright, until he healed fully, then he would make his way back to Edoras.
In his condition he knew it wouldn't be good to be alone and so far from his destination.

(This is short and bad, I warn you.)

The night had been spent in relative silence, though she was surrounded by mortal company, and had passed with the emergence of two men. Dawn was breaking and Hingaer, still wondering at the turn of Fate that led so many together, was on the edge of the camp, her eyes towards the East. Soft, warm sunlight filtered in through the leaves and branches above and about the meadow, casting a pale glow over the campsite. The Elf, her mantle drawn up over her brow, was regarding her new companions silently.

She was tucked snugly on the lower branches of a nearby evergreen tree, with her dog in her arms, and mulled as only Elves were wont to do with an indifferent facade drawn over her face. This was strange. Strange, indeed, that so many travelers, lone at first and diverse, were here met in the wild districts of Gondor. Of course, there was none other like her. No elf. Not even an Elf-friend. Hingaer sighed, shaking her head at the turn of events. What in Arda drew all these people together?

The quite sound of a camp waking up brought Singalice slowly from her sleep. The rider was still asleep, a deep frown on his face. Well that was not much she could do to help him; the wound would be more of a nuisance that an inhibition. She rose and stretched her cramped muscles, then something knocked into her back. Singalice spun around half drawing the long knife at her side, then she laughed.

“Come for your breakfast, my friend?” she asked, her horse nickered and stamped the ground with a hoof. Singalice smiled, knelt down by her haversack. As she unbuckled it she felt something wet drop on her cheek. Gwenhfira was drooling on her! Singalice glared up at the mare standing over her, “Disgusting beast!” she growled, pulling an apple out of the pack. “Here, this is all you get my girl! I do not know when I shall be able to get more.” The horse munched happily on the treat then went to mingle with the other horses. Singlaice pulled out another apple and bit into it, taking survey of her companions. The first glance showed that all the humans, including herself, were sleep tousled and rather dirty, while the elf was immaculately clean. She smiled at that. Of the two men the darker one was the more fascinating. A frightening sort of fascinating.
With a start Singalice realized that she did not know either of the men’s names. One man was still resting and the other had an ominously closed look. She took a deep breath a dug another apple out of the haversack, you will never learn anything it you don’t ask questions, she thought grimly as she made her way over to him.

The man was eating a wedge of bread when Singalice stopped at his side. He did not look up. She sat down in his line of sight, “I am Singalice, friend.” She murmured, holdind out the apple to him. “We are heading to the Red Fox Inn, would you be accompanying us, sir?”

((I'm assuming you are speaking to me, Eleiel))

The morning came quickly, and Sol was thankful for it. He sat up lazily, not having opened his eyes yet. His back was stiff and his cheek was red where he had his hand serving as a makeshift pillow. He had not yet opened his eyes and rubbed them, preparing them for the light that they were about to be blinded with. He barely opened one eye, the first sight being Hallow looming over him. With a sigh he rubbed his eyes once more and fully opened them with a few extra blinks.

His vision was slightly blurred, but he looked around seeing the fire was out and others had already awaken. He must have been the last one to finally rise. He shrugged and pushed Hallow out of the way who had begun to nudge his shoulder. "What do you want..." he grunted as he nudged the stubborn horse once more off his back and stuggled to get to his feet. Sol was not a morning person...

Hallow was relentless, eager to see if his master had anything extra to eat. "Go away." he said simply as he knelt by his saddle bags that were seated against the tree he had slept against. "Sorry, Hallow, we have nothing." he said simply. The idea of eating disgusted him at this time of day. A break fast meal always never quite settled with Solvenlin. Hallow wondered off back to the grass.

From kneeling down he just turned around and sat back against the tree. Not really ready to leave quite yet, seeing as he had already slept in quite a bit, might as well try to enjoy the morning. He surveyed the others he shared the camp with. He saw the she-elf perched in a low-lying branch. The solider who arrived wounded, seemed to be doing alright. He stood over by his horse. Sol ignored the affairs of other men and therefore thought nothing more of the Rider.

He remembered seeing another maiden, yet did not see her. Must have left already, either that or was tending to matters...which needed tending to. As his eyes scan they fell upon a young maiden approaching him, rather hesitantly. She seemed of a small build, very defined features of her face. Sol watched her as she approached him and nodded to her.

“I am Singalice, friend.” She murmured, holding out the apple to him. Seeing the apple he nodded and took it. He looked towards Hallow and let out a sharp quick whistle. The horse's head shot up and looked, Sol tossed the apple in the horse's direction who quickly saw the treat and went for it.

He looked back at the maiden known as Singalice. "Thank you, my friend never takes a treat like that for granted and will thank you in his own way." There was a pause. Sol was not a people person. "I am Solvenlin."

With that he arose, offering a hand to help Singalice back to her feet. Her hand was very small compared to his. “We are heading to the Red Fox Inn, would you be accompanying us, sir?”

Sol adjusted the gloves upon his hands and looked towards the sun, squinting. "No, I will be going my own path from here. I thank you for the fire and the breakfast..." his voice trailed off as he smiled and nodded behind her. Hallow, who had quickly finished off the apple, was thanking her as predicted and nuzzled her back, right between her shoulder blades with a snort.

Sol did not want disclose anymore information about himself or his destination, even though it held no real significance. He simply smirked at her reaction to his over eccentric horse and picked up his saddle bags. He then began to ready Hallow for the remainder of their trip back.

Hilderinc ate alone, he didn't have much for he had lost all of it during the attack.
Hilderinc kept hearing the people talking about going to a place called the Red Fox Inn, he supposed he would go with them that far at least. "I will need something to eat, and you will need to rest for a little while." Hilderinc whispered to Darkfire.
He looked over and saw one of the maidens and other man speaking. Hilderinc wondered who this other man was, he didn't care to ask though. Hilderinc could see the man could care less about him as well.
Hilderinc walked over to the maiden who had found him, Leyn was her name, or at least thats what he thought. "My lady, would you mind if I followed you to the Red Fox Inn so that I might recover there?" Hilderinc asked, he wanted to be sure she wouldn't mind.

Singalice patted the enthusiastic horse and stared bemusedly at Solvenlin. His clipped tones left no room for another attempt at friendliness.
“I wish you well then, on the rest of your travels.” Singalice said to his turned back. The man inclined his head, but did not reply. She shook her head; it wasn’t as if being friendly was easy for her! She turned away from him and went back to her dent in the ground. Although all the others were now awake, she felt disinclined to try a further attempt at camaraderie after that rebuff.

She shook her blanket out vigorously then packed it away. As Singalice stowed her haversack and checked her saddle for dampness, the Rider’s horse caught her eye. He was a beautiful beast; tall and well muscled. He had not been cared for last night; his rider being in no position to do so. The horse did not shy away as she approached him; he only looked at her and snorted. Singalice ran her hand down his legs, watched for swelling or pain. She picked up each hoof and checked for a lodged pebble. There was nothing other than the scratched and abrasions usual on a horse that was in a fight.

Singalice scratched his forelock and spoke quietly to him, “You have been through a bit of a tussle, little brother. I hope your rider does not mind that I have handled you. Some dislike anyone touching their horse. What is your name, brother?”

After speaking with the maiden he turned and saw another maiden talking with his horse.
"His name is Darkfire." Hilderinc said as he came alongside him.
He brushed his hand across Darkfire's scars. "Yes, we have been through some trouble. Explaining it would be too hard right now." Hilderinc said, his voice was low.
Then Darkfire nudged his shoulder, he would have to tell someone soon. "I know Darkfire, but the memories are just too real in my mind still. I fear that I would break down and weep." Hilderinc said as he stroked Darkfire's mane.
Darkfire snorted as if to disagree.
Hilderinc just patted his neck and sat down beside him, waiting to see what they would be doing.

Singalice jumped slightly when the man appeared suddenly at her elbow. When he spoke his voice was calm and low. “His name is dark fire.” His voice sank lower, “Yes, we have been through some trouble. Explaining it would be too hard right now.” Singalice took a half step away and bowed her head; sensing the thinly veiled pain beneath his words.

"...the memories are just too real in my mind still. I fear that I would break down and weep."

Singalice heard the whispered words, but knew they were not fore her ears. She bit her lip, trying to chose her next word well, “I am sorry. There is no end of trouble, even in these times.” She looked at the man and half smiled at his studied calmness. “We should be leaving, soon. Do you…” she glanced at his bound side, “Can you manage?”

When Leyn woke from her light slumber, mist was heavy in the muggy forest air, and the sun was slanting through the thick canopies of leaves. As was her usual morning routine, she doused the fire and glanced around the camp. Some of the others were in conversation, and Leyn didn’t want to intrude upon anything. Low mutterings were all she could hear, and that was for the best. She was best off leaving her unusual companions alone unless they asked something of her. Silence was golden, and that was all Leyn wanted.

Wrapping her sword belt around her waist, Leyn went up to Verelin and muttered to the stallion, “The Red Fox is only a few miles away. If we leave now, we should be able to make it by midmorn. What do you think?” In reply, the usually fierce stallion nudged his mistress. “And then we can find out more about Adarin, if he is indeed alive.”

Her demeanor the usual solemn one she wore, Leyn addressed the others. “I am all for leaving right now. Perhaps we will get to know each other better on the way to the inn, that is, all of you who are coming with me. Once we get there, our paths may separate or not, I don’t know, but it is only my own journey that I know I must go on.” A glow of determination lit up her hazel-tinged eyes, but a deep sadness was still evident as well. “I know not what any of you plan to do, but it is best that we leave now before the sun reaches its zenith.” Falling silent, Leyn turned away and mounted Verelin, the great stallion anxiously prancing in place; he wanted to be out of the eerie forest.

Leyn had not forgotten the man she had wanted to talk to, but a sense of loss overcame her yet again, and she wanted nothing to do with anyone. Verelin set off on a hidden trail that was bound east towards Minas Tirith. The Red Fox was situated about halfway between Edoras and Minas Tirith, and it was a decent place to stay. Leyn hoped to get answers or at least a lead here before she set off to find whether or not her brother was still alive.

Hilderinc mounted Darkfire, he knew that he couldn't go off alone yet, he was too venerable. Once he became strong enough to fight he would leave the group and head back to Rohan.
Hilderinc sat quietly, waiting for the others.
Hilderinc was a little nervous about going on with people he didn't even know, he was very uneasy.
Somehow he could tell that the maiden named Leyn seemed to be a little upset about his presence, but he thought it might just be his imagination.
"Soon we'll go home Darkfire, but these people offer some protection while I heal." Hilderinc whispered to his horse.
Then he sat up straight, he could see they were almost ready, he wondered if everyone was going with them, the other man seemed uninterested in joining their little group, but he didn't care to speak with him, or anyone else for that matter.

Singalice mounted her horse and tried to wait calmly for the others. Well, as calmly as a very spirited young horse could. She took a tighter grip of the reins.
Five. Five people in the cavalcade; a very assorted group it was too. They would be quite a sight riding up to the Red Fox. She grinned; I almost wish I could see us!
If any one in this camp had a desire for secrecy, that wish would not be granted.

(( ooc- thanks for the invite))

Earendel stopped at a cross road. She was told that this cross road was with in a mile of an Inn. She patted her mare on the neck. Hyldo was no longer a young animal but she was without question her best friend.

Earendil looked much the small built woman with blond hair and green eyes. Her Rohan made clothes and bow and quiver seldom left doubt as to her heratige.

She slipped off her mare and walked around stretching her legs. She had not been able to rest much the night before so they had beent raveling a couple of hours all ready.

She spoke to her mare, "why dont we rest a while before heading to the Inn."

((I was hoping to wait for Hathien to post, but since she will be gone for the weekend I will go ahead and post))

Solvenlin mounted Hollow quickly, pushing himself quickly so his cloak would fly behind him and he would not sit on it. That was the worse in his opinion...riding with your cloak tucked under you. He looked to the right and saw all the others were ready and had their destinations in mind. He was curious who started this little troupe and if any of them were actually traveling together. He gathered none were. However one maiden seemed to be leading the way. Maybe she had initiated the travel to the Red Fox inn.

“I know not what any of you plan to do, but it is best that we leave now before the sun reaches its zenith.” The maiden had a mission that was for sure. Sol could read her like a scroll, almost. Curiosity was Sol's worse attribute. He wanted to know what she was up to... what was the determination in her eyes? He pursed his lips together in thought as he watched the others who chose to follow. It wouldn't hurt for him to travel with this group...would it? He could at least know the road for future reference, and indeed suffice his curiosity. Making up his mind, he urged Hallow forward with a click of his tongue, directing the reigns in the direction of the others.

(I am going to assume that everyone is coming with…if that is not the case, let me know.)

Brilliant sunshine felt like life’s breath when Verelin surged out of the forest at an easy canter, his hefty muscles rippling against his ebony coat. Leyn was seated with ease upon his back, gripping both reins in her hands. She was at the head of the company, of which there was a variety of people. Leyn had never been in such a mixed crowd, but that could be explained in the fact that she hadn’t traveled with many since the massacre of her band. The very thought caused Leyn to halt Verelin and muse. Will I be able to find Adarin? she asked herself. Is he even still alive? What will he look like? Will he remember me? All these thoughts pervaded her consciousness until Verelin let out a warning neigh. Up ahead was another rider. While Leyn wasn’t gifted with the sight of the elves, she could tell that the rider was relatively slender and melded well with the horse.

Without consulting the others, for she hardly knew them that well anyway, Leyn urged her stallion forward towards the rider. The Red Fox lay a few miles ahead, and it would be around noon when they reached the place. A fierce joy gripped her, and for the first time in a while, a smile lit her face. Her mother had often said that a smile made Leyn beautiful, for she didn’t have the looks of her mother or brother, but Leyn had never let vanity cause her stress. Leave that for the fickle noble maids, I care not. Leyn thought, remembering her mother’s words with glee.

The distance between the approaching rider and Leyn lessened. When the figure was in hailing distance, Leyn let out a cry. “Hail there, friend! Where are you bound?” Under normal circumstances, the maiden from Rohan would never have initiated a conversation, but with the chance that her brother might still live and she was about to find out, Leyn was more apt to converse, even with a complete stranger.

Hilderinc watched as the maiden named Leyn race up to the man on the horse.
Hilderinc's mind wandered quickly and he noticed a bird flying about the trees. He sighed and wished there was a way to send a message to his family, to let them know he was alive.
By now they probably know about the attack, and they probably think I'm dead too.Hilderinc thought.
Then Hilderinc decided that he didn't have to stay with the group and spurred Darkfire ahead, then stopped, he was in no condition to go alone, at least not yet.
So Hilderinc rode over to Leyn. "It would be best not to converse with people we do not know. We should just continue on our way. We'll find out if your brother, or whoever it is, is alive when we reach there." Hilderinc said, he was being very nice but he was in a hurry to get some rest and eventually get home.
Hilderinc sat there and waited for her to reply, he was tired and his side still hurt, why couldn't he have died with the others and had no pain?
Hilderinc knew he was kept alive for a reason, he had to tell all the people about what had happened when he returned to Edoras.
Then his thoughts came back and he was still looking at Leyn.
"Well, come on. We don't have time to worry about the dead." Hilderinc said, he was speaking out of sadness and did not realize that she would take offense.

(I thought we could start the tension between our characters Dinenlasse, he's kinda still depressed from losing all his friends so he is not being very nice to Leyn, I figured she would take offense when he said that her brother was dead.)

(Tension is always good!!! I like the idea, Elfmaiden!!)

Leyn halted Verelin and glanced at the man who had ridden up beside her. Her hazel eyes were icy. "I don't know who you are and how you found out about my brother, but I have no idea if he is truly gone so I ask you to keep your comments about the dead out of my hearing. Besides, how are we supposed to remember loved ones after they die by forgetting them?" Her tone was level, but there was no denying the reproof in her voice.

With a light kick to his sides, Verelin moved into a walk. He snorted as the man's dark horse followed alongside of him. He felt Leyn tense up in the saddle, and her hands tightened on the reins. Picking up on her emotions, the ebony horse tossed his head and lunged forward, wanting to run. Leyn was used to this and eased back on her grip, staying Verelin. "Ease up, boy. We will be at the inn soon," she muttered so only he could hear. Verelin sighed and resumed his slow pace.

"Sometimes you have to forget, or you will not be able to move on." Hilderinc whispered sadly.
He spurred Darkfire on, the horse seemed to avoid being too close to Verelin.

After a short time Hilderinc stopped to find water for Darkfire.
"I think you should all do the same." Hilderinc said, then he walked down off the road to a river.
When he came back up he saw that Leyn was still atop Verelin.
"I would be happy to take your horse down to the river." Hilderinc said, although he still felt tension whenever he was around her.
Then he mounted his horse and stood beside her.
"I would not be traveling with you if I was not wounded, but in my state I must be under the safety of others, so do not think this is for pleasure." Hilderinc said, his brown eyes seemed fierce, but also sad.

(I think maybe Leyn said something to Hilderinc first to provoke him to insult Leyn like that, so I hope thats alright)

(That is perfectly fine!)

Leyn dismounted her horse and led him to the river, the running water somewhat calming her nerves. Her eyes stared straight ahead, her face emotionless. "I have tried to forget and move on, but if there is that possibility he is alive, then I will do all in my power to find him, even if others think such a quest is feckless."

Verelin lowered his handsome head to drink, and Leyn rubbed his sleek neck. "I doubt any of our companions are here for pleasure, least of all you." Leyn turned and held his brown eyes with hers. "I am sorry if I seem blunt. I have seen a lot, and I am sure that you have as well." She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "I don't think we have been introduced. I am Llweryn." Something in her eyes flickered, and she looked away.

Sol sat upon his horse frustrated. They were stalling. With irritation, knowing this was a bad idea. He looked towards the two standing by the running water, seeing as they were busy conversing, simply turned his horse and galloped on down the road. The inn shouldn't be much further and he could pretty much tell by the tracks of the road, to simply follow it to arrive there.

He knew attempting to travel with the crowd would be a bad idea. He hardly knew where many of them went off too. The whole situation reminded him why he perferred to ride alone.
