Assuming the dog is no longer a pup, 25 pounds would be something like a medium-sized Beagle. Is anything known about its cat-compatibility?

In answer to your question about cats, he's indifferent to them and, very laid back, and very well-mannered. I don't think it will be an issue all, especially with Seamus being so dog oriented.

Oscar was given up by his previous owner because she did not have time for him following the birth of her first child. Not a good excuse to give the dog to a high-kill shelter in Alabama, but there you go.

Yes, he's originally from Alabama! Dogbless Rescue Partners brought him to Canada after he was discovered at the shelter. The rescue group specialises in bringing small and medium sized animals to areas of Canada where there is a shortage of smaller dogs. British Columbia is one such place, especially Vancouver Island which has a high number of retirees who tend to want smaller animals.

Here I must give kudos to the stellar efforts of the various Provincial rescue sites and BCSPCA societies, for ensuring that all animals that come into their facilities are spayed and neutered before they leave. Now, most of the dogs being surrendered are from the Aboriginal communities, and they tend to be larger animals.

Oscar is a slightly overweight mixed breed. The description read: Yorkshire terrier, American Eskimo, dachshund, and Chihuahua. The only part I can see is the Chihuahua (his face is distinctly chi), but he is brindle coated, something that does not exist in any of those breeds. The only small breeds that would fit would be pit bull terrier, bull dog, or whippet. From the long legs, body type, easy going nature, and love of running, my money would be on whippet. As for his tail, who knows. It doesn't seem to fit with any, although it is sort of terrier like.

I will take him home the week of May 24th so I will be busy getting ready for him. I'm really excited to be having him join the group.

GANDOLORIN:I'm the same when I go to a bookstore with a title in mind I go home with the book but also with two or three more.It seems that I cannot stop myself. And do you know what bothers me A LOT? It's when people say ''don't you think you have enough, why buy more?''I get so frustrated actually sometimes I get angry. What is it to them if I love to read! It's like you allowed to fill your head with nonsense but leave the books alone knowledge will get you confused.Somebody in my own family told me that reading too much books can cause cancer of the brain.OMG so discouraging and hopless!!

AWELYN: I've got a reader too.Actually I use both reader and books, but I prefer the books.
I worked on my bedplants the last 2days but the next few days won't be so good. We'll wake up tomorrow morning with snow .5cm Spring will come back in the middle of the week.

Beside Sindy, was Mitholiel there too and how is she?

I wish your grandson a very good recovery.

ES: Good luck with the new addition to your family.A new dog is always exciting.

Have a nice week all

Down to the line. We have to be out of the house by next week and want to actually be moved by this coming weekend. So much stuff I have thrown or given away. Why ever did I hold on to it? I'm exhausted. I refused to throw out all my Tolkien things though and have at least one box if not more of related items - books, movies, posters, Hadhafang, Legolas' twin knives... Once we're out of here I'll be on a laptop so things will be slower. Take care my fellow lovers of Tolkien.

Well, down to the line now. We are going to be moving out completely as of this weekend and staying with friends for a while. Will try to be on, but not sure how much time I will have. It IS exhausting, Dimple. Gondo, smooth doesn't describe it... 25 years in one place and a bit of hoarder left over from my dear parents, who lived through the Great Depression in 1929 (born around that time and the save it because you might need it philosophy was passed down to). It IS freeing to get rid of a lot of things, but still have too much. Ah well... Thank you all and take care!

Belle – congratulations on selling your house. I hope that your stay with friends is good. Yes, going through things and making decisions on what to keep can be tough. I am beginning to think that we should be downsizing as we will likely sell our home in the next 2-3 years. I agree that many of us are products of parents whose experience in the 30’s, made them hold on to things “ in case I need it some day”. My parents immigrated to Canada after WWII, so that experience also required much thrift and ingenuity.

ESM – how are you managing with the your space-aged new vehicle? Does it have a back- up camera? I quite like those. Happy for you about the rescue dog. I hope he’s settling in. Both our dogs were given up by people and it seemed the right thing to give them stable homes. Enjoy!

Awelyn- I hope that your grandson is recovering well from his chest surgery. What a blessing that such procedures are available to make his like easier.

Gandolorin- I commiserate with you, as a fellow book fiend. I see that a few of us have that condition. What a lovely vice, ever, ummmm hobby ! My husband plows through at least a book every week. We would be broke, if not for e-books and the local used book store. I quite like reading in a tablet, but the feel of a book, enjoying the cover and the ease of thumbing back to previous pages is special.

We've had a cool spring so far a and a lot of rain. The latter means that my well has plenty of water. I love being out in the garden and cleaning up the yard, so I haven't been on-line as much. Pleased to see that my Oriental Poppies are thriving. There will be about 20 blooms this year- a record for what started as 5 spindly plants in palliative care. Some Irises that I transplanted are also doing well. The black flies are nasty but not too many mosquitoes yet. Sadly, the next 3 years will see an invasion of Army Worms. Ugh!

Happy Friday to all of you.

Hi everybody

We had a bad storm monday and we were 27hours without power which I particularly not enjoy at all.I lost about for 100$ worth of food but I'm lucky because some other people were more than 48hours without power and they lost a lot more than I did.The storm and the wind were very strong and many of the power lines were broken because of the trees falling on them.Everthing is back to normal now and the weather is lovely.I will spend the week-end in the garden(what's new!)enjoying myself playing in the dirt

NEENIME: The black flies are terrible this year, our bulldog cannot stay outside as long as he would want he is almost being eaten alive by those annoying and despicable flying things, and when I'm in the garden I cannot always have my eyes on him and I feel sorry for him because he loves to help by putting my garden tools in his mouth and walking beside me, it is so funny to see him doing that,he looks so proud lol!
him doing that.

Mae govannen!

Dimple- so sorry about your food wastage due to the blackout. We almost had that 2 yrs ago in July. I had just come back from the story with big bags of ice, when the power came back on. We were lucky that the blackout was our neighbourhood and not an extensive area. I hope you get no more of those.

I love the image of your assistant gardener! Ours isn't that clever but he can be persuaded to take pieces of cardboard toward the recycling bin. He hasn't yet mastered dropping the item into the bin.

Gandolorin, yes I have been a member for a few years. Are you?

Lovely weather here though we have also had a couple of rollicking thunder storms. They reminded me of the Stone Giants fighting scene in The Hobbit film. The rain is good for the well, but also breeds mosquitoes and black flies. We are also expecting the first of three years of the Army Worm cycle. The sound of the little beasts chewing through the leaves of trees is disgusting and they can leave a slippery mess on the roads. Do any of you get them?

Belle- how goes the moving adventure?

We just had a lovely dinner last night at an upscale steak place. They serve a tasting menu before the main course, and the items are very cleverly put together. For instance, the Rockstar Salad is served on a slab of slate taken from a famous lakeside village hereabouts. Everything is made from scratch in interesting combinations and served with much care and explanation by the staff. Not a place we can afford often, but it was a special occasion, being a birthday, delayed Father's Day celebration and son Mark's graduation from the Nursing program. Since we are all Foodies, it was a delight.

Wishing you all a wonderful day and hoping that your summer is relaxing and enjoyable.

Hello back from a 14 day vacation. Drove to Washington state to see my son and his two children. I had a great time. I got to see my son sing and play guitar in a bistro type place. Visited an Irish pub one night and an Italian restaurant in the home of the owner. It was quaint. It had been there for 40 years and the food was delicious. My son fixed us a bar-b-q dinner one night. All in all it was a great time. Before I left three days to be exact someone put a little black Chihuahua with only one eye in my back yard. I took him to the vet and they said he is about 9 and his back nails were so long they were in circles. He did not have a micro chip but they cut his toe nails poor thing. I have tried to find his owner and no one has claimed him. So I did and named him Diego. He is such a sweet dog and I can't believe someone would abandon him. He was hungry and cold and by the looks of him and how well he get on with my dogs I think he had been in my yard a few days. Probably eating cat food and staying under my back deck.
It has been hot her this week and it has taken time to adjust to the hot temps after mountain temperatures. Have a great week .

Happy Fourth of July my american friends!Every sunday I'm watching on Fox news the series The Patriots, very interesting.Last sunday it was George Washington.Any of you watching it too?

AWELYNoor little Dingo, what an awful thing to do.Here in Québec we experience it every year when people move to a new home every first of july. They abandon their pets, dogs or cats and everything in between but most are dogs and cats in their old apartment or in the streets or at the local SPCA.Having an animal is a commitment,it is not a thing or a toy that they can dispose of when it suits them.It makes me angry every time I hear about it.Fortunately there are people such as you with a good heart.Good for you and Dingo

Have a good week all

AWELYN: I'm glad Diego found a home with you. The cruelty of people still astounds me. I'm sure he'll be much, much happier with you.

I'm in the process of having the outside of my house painted. Two of my neighbours are doing it. One of them is also doing much needed repairs on my garden shed. The prep work is pretty much completed. I'm keeping the same colour scheme: Hawthorne yellow for the house, with Bristol blue and white for the trim.

It's been an amazingly busy summer so far. I'm now doing my own weed whacking and mowing, although my neighbour does my ditches.

I also have someone who occasionally helps out with other yard work. I cut down four cedars and it has made a huge difference to the back of the property. There are still a lot of trees behind me. I love the brightness the culling has created.

Have an awesome week, everyone!

Unfortunately, this topic is my current uncontested bête noir! Image leading to Image

My bedroom window is pointed due east, and until about April or May of last year, there were trees about five or six stories high which prevented the sun from shining directly on this window, and at horrifyingly early hours for my normal sleeping rhythm as has been the case since the trees were felled. Summer is worst, all the more so as it now starts getting uncomfortable warm very early, which is also very detrimental to my sleep (I have become a fan of cloud cover, even rain, warding off this assault on my sleep).

Last year's summer was particularly bad because we had an unusual amount of sunshine (read:drought, as I mentioned in quite a few posts at the time), which meant my bedroom got heated up more that was usual before the trees were felled. Opening the windows to cool the room down just was futile when inside and outside temperatures were above 25° C (77° F) approximately at midnight (!!!), which is too warm for me to be able to fall asleep. So our, so far, quite normal summer (people with no concept of what a drought here is are grumbling - calling their memories sieves is entirely too positive a description!) sits quite well with me.

But there have been some very tightly localized torrential downpours causing horrific, tightly localized flood damage here in Germany recently. As far as I interpret it, normally such relatively small cloud formations with lots of rain to unload move fairly quickly, spreading the downpour over a fairly large territory. With a big storm system (we don't get real hurricanes here, thankfully), this quick movement still doesn't help the affected areas much. But in several cases we have had here this summer, the loaded clouds pretty much stayed put and dumped all their rain on a very small area. There is no sewer system in the world that can handle that kind of deluge. Weather extremes causing massive damage - makes me wonder what places will remain safe in the future. Just taking the last two years, staying put where we are may not be the stupidest option. Except that we are in close proximity to a coniferous forest whose trees may not be those best adapted to recurring drought conditions ...

Hello everyone.

Belated but sincere greetings to our American friends on their Independence Day. I hope that Dimple and ES had a wonderful Canada Day celebration. My husband and I took our cameras to a reconstructed fur trade fort, dating from about 1830's or so. Great artifacts and staff in costume and in character. Had a lovely time.

Gandolorin, I see we have another thing in common- trouble sleeping because of heat and light. I HATE that combination of high humidity and temperature, then add the light factor and I am really in trouble. I recently bought a sleeping mask and found that it helped Because we are about 49* North latitude, there is noticeable light in the sky until after 11 pm in June and July and dawn begins well before 5 am.

As for the heat, we had new windows installed that increased the air flow around the house. We close windows and blinds/ curtains on the east side of the house until evening and keep the west side open until the sun turns the corner. Fans to keep the air flowing also help. I hope you find a system that works for you.

The increase in incidents of severe weather events all across the globe is worrying. At some point, it may affect the supply of major food crops. For me, it's a wake-up call to be more cognizant of our impact on the environment.

Nice to see that we are both Tolkien Society members. I joined about eight years ago. Anyone else here a member?

Awelyn, poor Diego! How lucky for him that such loving people took him in. I hope he will be happy with your family. Glad to see that you had a lovely visit with your son's family.

Belle- I hope the move went smoothly and that your temporary digs are comfortable. May your new adventure be enjoyable.

I've been enjoying lots of time in the garden. Have also started biking again. Did 17km on Tuesday but it was too hot and humid, so I ended up with a headache later that day. I need to restrict myself to biking in cooler temperatures, but it's great to be out and about in my area. A fun way to get some exercise and a pleasant surprise that this old body still has some strength. Now hubby has joined me and is working his way back up to longer trips.

Wishing you all happy, restful summer days.

Great news. Another of Tolkien's works is to be published again. It shows his skill in poetry and gives us a glimpse of a dark prototype of Galadriel.

Very interesting, Neenime. Yes, Elves and fae in general were NOT considered "kind and nice and sweet" in character at all in most folklore. Instead, one had to either completely avoid or placate them for fear of bad things happening. Just look at the Wild Hunt and changelings.

Good point Belle. In fact, Gimli's reaction to Galadriel is perhaps closer to that of many ordinary folk in Gt Britain, than Sam's wide-eyed satisfaction. Certainly Slavic pagan beliefs were characterized by a very cautious relationship with various spirits and force of Nature. Propitiation and watchfulness were essential to survival. I think that could be said of many cultures' relationships with magical creatures.

Gandolorin. What would you say about Germanic culture and their various magical beings? Were they seen as dark and potentially dangerous or more playful or was there a mixture?

BELLE I hope you'll enjoy the room and your friends for that period of time.Good luck in finding a house as soon as possible.

We had plenty of rain during the last 10 days or so VERY humid, couldn't do much in the garden. The fan had a lot of work to do to keep us comfortable and when we had the sun we closed the curtain from east to west avoiding as much heat as possible.I hate this kind of weather it makes me drowsy and sleepy, not good at all!

Interesting article Neeime,Elves and fae are looking kind and nice in faerie tales for children at least the one I've read when I was a child but there are faerie tales for adult and they're not the ones we imagine when we were children quite the contrary.

So good to read your posts. Little Diego was ill but doing well know. He is so smart and sweet. He goes with me everywhere. He loves riding in a car. Dimple I know what you mean about humidity making you sleepy. We have a great quantity of rain here too.
Belle I bet you are counting the days until you can retire to Colorado.
Neenime my husband turns our ac very low at night we both have to have it cool for sleeping and his bedroom has black sleep curtains to keep out the light.

Yes, I am. So much to do and time is roaring on. We will be in the house with our daughter and her family until she can find someplace reasonably priced to live, but that's okay. It's interesting how the government makes even retiring very complex, with so many forms to fill out. Heh!

There's a problem with what we know of Germanic culture (if by that you mean "pagan", pre-Christian culture) in that most of it comes down to us via the Eddas, the Poetic (assumed to be the elder) and the Prose Edda. But both of them have come down to us via Iceland of the 13th century, when Iceland had become Christianized (Celtic culture has similar transmission and falsification issues with Christianity). Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon poem with which JRRT was concerned most of his professional life, might be closer to origins, but had a very narrow focus (the Beowulf poet is also considered a Christian, if one without the fundamentalist intolerance exhibited by "Saint" Bede "the Venerable" ).

As to "Were they seen ...":

- which "magical creatures" do you mean?
- by whom were they "seen"
- when were they "seen".

Odin, Thor, Loki & Co. may be late developments in "Germanic culture" (as registered by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century) and have no resemblance at all with the "Germanic culture" possibly encountered by Julius Caesar in his wars with the Celts of what is now France in "De Bello Gallico", never mind what later Roman authors noted in the odd century after Julius's murder, being mostly a "mere" millennium before Snorri.

Gandolorin - I am familiar with the more well-known deities in Scandinavian and Germanic culture. I was curious about lesser beings - local spirits, nature spirits, fairies, trolls and such. Are they common in pre-Christian Germanic culture ?

Your point about biased sources is well taken. By the time any of this was recorded, Europe had been converted. So everything is seen through the decidedly biased Christian lens rather than through the eyes of a relatively objective scientific or ethnographic observer.

Good question. But who would be able to answer it today? Hints might be found in the "Mardi Gras" or similar, barely Christianized, traditions in the (more or less) German-speaking areas of Europe - or with "Mardi Gras" also the Celtic (Gallic) variants of them. Our current problem with both of these pre-Roman, never mind pre-Christian, cultures is that both of them left practically no written sources useful to our curiosity.
