Post The Jewel and the Crown *free!*
on: February 17, 2005 09:52
* Eldarion is still free and original characters are welcome - decent posts - see OOC *

Ceinwyn pouted as her trunks were strapped to the wagons led by burly packhorses as the bustle of the journey to Gondor seemed an ordered chaos from where the Princess stared from her balcony. Soar, land of myth and shrouded legend, was sending forth the Jewel they prized above all else, the youngest daughter of the famed King Legodranz, Princess Ceinwyn. Bound by duty, her fate rested with Prince Eldarion in a treaty drew up by her parents yet neither relished the prospect with much zest - Ceinwyn herself loathed the thought of being tamed by some far off Prince who knew nothing of her people's customs or she wagered, even cared to. " Daughter" her mother's tender voice echoed in the wooden raftered chamber, the scent of lavender faint from her skin. " It is time almost for you to leave us...please, come say goodbye to your people" she urged yer Ceinwyn merely sighed with an inaudable curse, storming from her chamber with little more then a backward glance.

Servants bustled nimbly about the magestic palace, centre of Soar's government and the pinnacle of justice, banners of ever King who'd ever reigned, hung loftily from the ceiling of the main hall. Here ranged in a mute line, stood her honour guard, some old and withered with the past war whilst others glowed with the vigour of youth. How can this be, that I must leave everything I love to go to someone who has never even laid eyes on me? she mused dourly, staring listlessly over the shoulder of the maid whom buckled the emerald cloak at her right shoulder and pulled her honey gold hair out from under her collar. Ah the Valar what a fate you deal for me! Her face seemed set in stone as she paced from the hall, her bearded broad shouldered father watching her with proud warmth. Ceinwyn bowed her head mutely to his kiss, delicate features drawn into a taunt grimace.

Would that I were a peasant girl with the freedom to do as I pleased - not a Princess bound by duty. Mounting her gelding with the lithe ease of one long practised to such arts she tightened her neat palms about the reigns, gulping back tears in a breif smile to her people, gathered about the causeway with wide, awe struck eyes. Her mother stood sheltered in the arm of Hector as the company started forwards, Gaheris Captain of the Horse ordering the doors to be swept open whilst Ceinwyn feeling as if the future bore nothing but chains, raised her head defiantly. For all Soar's freedom and equality I still bear the women's duty of serving a man - a forgien man in a forgien land. And without even the right to have my voice heard! she though agast, shaking her head as the procession ambled out through the gates and into the wide, sweeping hills. The world seemed to close about her then, with no-one save Gaheris whom seemed familiar, no face she could smile towards when the lynching despair became too much. How could my parents betray me so? How could they leave me so alone?

Felyon put the final touch of rose pink paint on the canvas,
He pushed pale gold braids, interwoven with emerald ribbon, behind his ears as he stood back to look at his latest masterpiece,
Moss green eyes looked critically at the portrait of queen Arwen, the pale pink rose now perfect in her hand.
"That looks nothing like what is supposed to" Glyndr said from where he sat on the wide windowledge, the window open to the bustling steets of Gondor.
"you had better make a good job of the portrait of our future King's betrothed", Glyndr ran his hand through his extraordinarily long raven dark hair, the other hand held an apple, begged from kitchen maids, Glyndr could work his charm with any woman to get what he wanted, his Kellquenti beauty and magical charm could woo any female. He knew it. and used it!.
Felyon turned sharply, moss green eyes met wicked ice blue,"of course I shall" Felyon smiled asoft mossgreen smile"Have I not been commisioned by King Elessar himself ?, so," He pointed a rose pink painted finger at his friend."I must be the perfect artist for the task".
"Rubbish!", Glyndr took a bite of the apple as he slid from the window ledge to pull one of Felyon's braids hard. "you , my litle Sylentor are cheap! that is why he chose you"
Felyon narrowed his eyes" And you my annoying Kellquenti, are a heathen who does not appreciate the finer things in life!"
Felyon stabbed a slender finger in Glyndr's chest,"Anyway, I have instructions to meet the Soarian entourage at their first stop, I am to sketch our future Queen on her journey here, we leave tonight" Felyon said with a flourish.
"Well what a coincidence", Glyndr walked back to the window, He looked out over the beautiful city, the white tree and beyond, "I have been instructed to lead my Kellquenti soldiers with some of the Gondorian ,that shall be travelling with you to greet the new Queen" Glyndr smiled a wicked smile, an evil gleam in his ice blue eyes,"Heathen I may be, but I appreciate beauty, as well you know, a pretty maid does not go unappreciated, I hear she is a rare beauty"
"Oh gods! I shall not listen". Felyon gave Glyndr one of his withering looks."I hear that Eldarion has not met her before, The marriage arranged by their fathers" Felyon tidied his paints meticuously,,
"Much like the mare the king bought for Queen Arwen. "Glyndr arched an eyebrow, "bought it without even seeing the animal. most unwise".
"That is a terrible thing to say!"Felyon turned sharp green eyes to Glyndr, "Lady Ceinwyn is not a mare!"
"Ah Ceinwyn is it?" Glyndr threw the apple core out of the window, "pretty name, well my friend, mare or not, we shall soon find this rare beauty's true likeness"
Felyon shook his head in exhasperation, "Glyndr!"
Felyon, an artist and musician had been called to the Gondorian court as artist and musician to the royalty, as a Sylentor elf he was well suited tothe finery and high living.
Glyndr was the son of a Kellquenti Elflord, a captain of five hundred Kellquenti soldiers brought in for their Elven skills to join
the Gondorian army. Both he and Felyon were overjoyed to find each other again after a long time apart.
"Tonight ," Glyndr grinned, we shall find our future Queen," he winked at Felyon, "make sure your pencils are sharp!".

no, no the longer the better! adds detail

Ceinwyn's entourage eventually reached the outskirts of Gondor's provinces as evening began to dwindle into a musky rose, the first stars puckering through the vast expance of sky whilst the Jewel of Soar mused drearily of what she could expect of Eldarion. The rumours of his battle spirit and diplomacy spread even through the murky mists of Soar and yet Ceinwyn was not fooled. One of the warriors whom now rode as her honour guard, was sung of in halls throughout the country, yet she knew him as nothing more then a rogue. Her gelding plod blindly through the ambling hills, the mountains softening to soft sweeps of green before and the forests grew sparse without the flush which was only attributed to the mystical realms of Soar. Already the memories began to flush back through a resolve of absolute iron, even the smells of the fresh pine or the bakeries situated in the town just below the palace. How can Gondor even compare? she mused irritably. Gondor is not my home, I know no-one there to call my friends and I shall be nothing but a pretty centrepeice for this Prince!. The cold fury of her parent's betrayal or at least it seemed so to her eyes, wedged a pain too brutal for words to moisten her eyes. A brisk wind whipped her hair back from her pale oval face, as the gentle sounds of the horses hooves merged with the babble of the lesser soliders at the back of the trail. Tomorrow night she knew, a ball would be held in an offical state welcome to honour her arrival - to honour me, she thought callously, as a possesion - as befits my title. As a Jewel. And what of me as a woman? As a person with feelings and a heart?

Gradually, houses began to appear on the sides of the roads and with them, eager eyed strangers, all dark haired as was the custom with Gondorians. So I shall stick our like a sore thumb, she scowled inwardly. Wonderful...the scenery though was not wholey insignificant. The provinces possesed an easy grace where Soar was rugged, ancient and so she contented herself with gazing at the shrubbery and vines creeping up the quiant cottages. Perhaps I may have a garden - my own little garden where some bulbs can be brought from Soar, she thought hopefully, a small smile playing upon her lips. As they passed through a market town, the sentry whom guarded the gates, bowed, eyes wide in awe at this creature whom seemed to appear from myth, from legend. The silent, stern warriors of Soar mounted before with the crest of the eagle gleaming at thier chest. Oh would that this were over! That I could meet, greet and disappear! she cursed inwardly until, squinting to the horizon she could just make out vague shillouettes hasteing towards them. Well - Eldarion? No. Why should he come personally to meet me and then she remembered. Another guard of Gondorians had been arranged to ride out and escort her to her husband-to-be the next morning. Sighing, she straightened in her saddle, honey tousled hair falling forwards slightly as she stared at the newcomers with the full sheen of Soar. A Jewel indeed.

Gwaithdûr followed his princess warily. He had earned his position as the princess' personal guard, as had many of his ancestors. He was a charming young man, with long black hair and silvery blue eyes, and he was quick and lithe. From his almost regal appearance, one would not have guessed that he had been leading troops into battle since he was eighteen. Now as he rode alongside Ceinwyn through Gondor, he was glad that he had been deemed worthy to accompany the Jewel of Soar.

Felyon rode beside Glyndr at the head of the section of Kellquenti and Gondorian soldiers, twenty in all, his dapple mare proudly keeping pace with Glyndr's silver grey stallion, Felyon was eager to meet the subject of his next portrait.
"Felyon," Glyndr sat back in the saddle, "We shall now be the first to meet our new Queen, nervous?",he grinned at his Sylentor friend.
Felyon nodded, as he furiously sketched the approaching Soarians, a pencil perched behind a pointed ear, another held between his teeth, "Mmmph!", he replied, as he finished the drawing.
Glyndr halted the section. "Why our prince sends twenty of our army to escort the princess, when they have a perfectly good guard themselves, I shall never know".
Glyndr pushed Felyon's shoulder " Come on let us meet this pretty mare".He urged his horse forward to meet the Soarian entourage.
"Glyndr hush!" Felyyon warned "They shall hear".
Glyndr just shrugged.
Glyndr and Felyon halted as the entourage also stopped before them.
"Welcome" Glyndr bowed, "To the Royal lands of Gondor, Prince Eldarion sends his deepest apologies for not attending himself ,but , he, like every citizen, is preparing for your arrival at the city", He shook his long hair back over his shoulders, "I am Glyndr, a captain in the Kellquenti army, at present in the service of Gondor." Glyndr wore the black and silver of the Gondorian army ,but still bore the Kellquenti crest of the emerald dragon with a ruby eye emblazoed on the front of his black leather tunic, He never wore a helmet , trading its protection for the freedom to use his Elven senses to the full.
"This is Felyon, he is commissioned to paint the portrait of the princess".
Felyon bowed, his pale ,silky braids a sharp contrast to the emerald robes he wore.
Glyndr's keen eyes searched the Soarians for the famed princess, Ever the warrior , he took mental note of the Soarian guard, his natural mistrust of other races taught him to assess every warrior as a potential opponent.
He made a particular note of one he guessed to be of the personal guard, a tall man, dark haired, Glyndr's trained military eye saw him as one who had seen battle, a leader who knew his worth, Glyndr watched him for a moment with an ice blue gaze before turning back to address the Soarian entourage, "We have rooms and a meal prepared for you all at a local Inn,we leave tomorrow morning for the city, I hope..."
he faltered , He had seen her, she was more beautiful than he expected.
"Er, I hope you shall find the meal acceptable" he continued hurridly,
Glyndr turned to Felyon, "The Soarian mare is a perfect jewel,I had no idea Soarians could be so beautiful" he whispered discreetly.in Felyon's pencil topped ear.
"No!" Felyon warned.
"No what?", Glyndr turned back to the waiting Soarians, He arched an eyebrow at Felyon, then spoke to Ceinwyn,"My Lady, welcome " He bowed low, "I hope that you find the Inn and our hospitality meets with your approval" he smiled a warm , ice blue smile, "Any complaints or if there is anything you need , please seek me out , I shall not be far".

Ceinwyn's view was obscured for a brief moment as the entourage approached, only horse rumps and the white cloaked backs of warriors meeting her avid gaze until finally, they parted. Urging her gelding closer to the men at the head of the coloum, it was with mild suprise that she deciphered they were both elves. How intruiging, she mused curiously. So Gondor is not full of patriartical apes then? Bowing her honey gold head by way of formal introduction, she let her eyes, a soft blue rest on them each in turn, such opposties in bearing and appearance. " Inn?" she repeated, dubiously unfamiliar with the term when one of her guard leaned in to whisper at her ear. " Ah tavern" her lips curved into a delicate smile, entirely diffident to the soild will beneath. She had caught the last of Glyndr's words, looked to Felyon and sighed. " Might I see what you've already drawn later? I have an eye for art" she added honestly, as her white cloaked honour guard began to dismount, leading thier horses to the stables tucked at the side of the Inn. Watching them listlessly for a moment, far too engrossed in her thoughts of home, she shook her head, sliding of her mare's back with lithe ease. Knots of eager villagers had begun to line the road, indulging in the double spectacle of both Soar and Gondor's might, the dwindling sun casting an azure glow about both sets of soliders. Guarding her poise carefully to betray nothing of the insolent willfullness beneath she smiled at Felyon, one she trusted (and this rare) instinctivly on sight. Perhaps he shall be the only friend in this drafty old country?

The people of Soar, her father especially, were ever famed with thier stealth in horsemanship - but not normal tamed beasts. Rare and wild were the horses of Soar, charging into battle with a fierceness as terrble as thier riders. The same untamed fury simmered still in poise of Ceinwyn, proud but distant as she surveyed the land which very soon, she'd rule over. Is it so awful to want to live in freedom in my own country rather then in some cage dressed in finery? Fingering the golden clasp at her shoulder thoughtfully, she turned once more to the elves, Glyndr possesing the same intruiging charm which one of her honour bore, Gwaithdûr. He at least was a man worth noting and had earned her respect with countless thrusts of swords. " Did Eldarion commision you to paint his bride? How very thoughtful of him" she teased good naturedly, though any who knew her well could catch the bitterness under those words. Unwilling to be parted just yet from those who bore her banner, she motioned for Gwaithdûr to fall into step behind her, the two elves either side of her slight shoulders. " What say you of my Prince then?" charming, she thought inwardly, that I have to stoop to ask strangers of my husband-to-be's character! though her face remained perfectly serene.

Gwaithdûr took his place a pace behind the princess, eyeing the two Elves warily. Although he had heard Elves to be a fair people, he was loath to trust anyone in this strange land where the Jewel of Soar was now to be Queen. He thought the King foolish to give away Soar's most precious Jewel; particularly to such a place as Gondor. Should not Ceinwyn's thoughts on it been heard? In his opinion, yes. But he was just a soldier and would do as he was told for as long as he was told to do it. Still, his first duty was to Princess Ceinwyn, and if she ordered him contrary to her father's will, he would follow. For now, though, he would wait and watch and see what would happen...

Felyon smiled his enchanting soft moss green smile as Ceinwyn asked if she could see his sketches. "Of course my Lady, "
Felyon could feel Glyndr's ice daggers in his back as he spoke.
"Glyndr. my rampant stallion ,this is one mare you shall not have". he thought.with asmile.
Felyon was deeply flattered that Ceinwyn should wish to see his work, he felt her a soft, free vibrant spirit as his own.
He spoke easily with her as they neared the Inn" yes, I am brought to court to paint your portrait, and as a musician and artist, I am lucky that the royalty allow me freedom in my art and music".
Glyndr shot him a look that told him to shut up. Felyon returned the glare with one of his own , Glyndr looked away, Felyon, when driven to anger was beyond any orc or goblin he had ever known, A scar across his chest reminded him of the fact,
Glyndr instead turned his attention to the warrior that walked behind them, He was uneasy ,this man was as skilled as he was. He kept his Elven senses sharp.
"We cannot tell you much of Eldarion," Glyndr said "That you must find out for yourself when we reach the city".
They entered the Inn , the Chestnut mare, the Innkeeper, Reylar extolling the excellence of his establishment.
The Inn, low beamed, warm with roaring fires in huge stone fireplaces, served simple meats cheeses bread and ale , simple yet of excellent quality,
Felyon an d Glyndr sat with Ceinwyn , Felyon opposite and Glyndr beside.
Felyon spoke with Ceinwyn of art and music, Glyndr was annoyed at Felyon,s obvious rapport with the princess ,"A drink my Lady" Glyndr placed a tankard of ale in front of her in an attempt to gain her attention..
Felyon ignored him, he ordered crystal white wine for him and Ceinwyn,
Glyndr turned his attention to Gwaithdur who sat opposite, he asked of the Soarion army ,If Gwaithdur would not speak of it he was prepared for an argument.
Felyon poured wine for Ceinwyn, "I understand your sadness, My father sold me to Gondor as an artist and musician, He wanted a son to work in the forge , one with strong hands" Felyon held up a pale slender hand, "not one whose hands wield a paintbrush, and pluck the strings of a harp I too miss my homeland, but at least now I have Glyndr".
he turned toward his Kellquenti friend "Oh dear!" .
Glyndr was about to cause trouble.

Gwaithdûr payed little attention to the artist. He seemed cordial enough for the moment. His companion Glyndr, however, seemed perhaps a bit hostile and neither took their eyes of the other. Gwaithdûr had learned long ago that even those with seemingly good intentions can turn out to be enemies. He spoke cautiously with the Elf about Soar's might, but he revealed little. The Elf seemed annoyed, which somewhat amused Gwaithdûr. However, never did Gwaithdûr remove his hand from the hilt of his sword, for he would allow nothing and no one to harm Ceinwyn. I long to rid us of the company of these Elves! Gwaithdûr thought.

" You miss your homeland too? I can only imagine what that must do to an elf's heart for they are more sensetive then that of a human from what I understand. Forgive me if my knowledge in such things is - rusty" she tilted her head sideward in thought, eying Glyndr's antagonistic stare with mild amusemant. Ceinwyn herself was prone to bouts of willfullness (perhaps that was why her parents sought to tame her to some phoney Prince) and noted the same boldness in him; Felyon however struck a chord within her when he spoke of being taken from his home and enduring the same emotions as she herself was facing. " But at least I have Glyndr" he smiled and it was it a shot of regret that Ceinwyn realised she had no-one, so familiar face, no-one with the wildness of Soar who understood her as a woman not mantled and garbed as the wealthy Jewel. " Would that I could draw! You are gifted indeed Sir for if I could paint as such I would never stop - indeed why would I want to?" she smiled earnestly, taking a swig of the drink set before her.

Hmmm - what funny tasting stuff this is! The wine in Soar can only be drank by the very hearty or else the weak will fall at one cup, she remanised wistfully, taking a brief glance about her honour guard who all seemed as reluctant to be here as her - perhaps because of her. It wasn't only she that resented her father's decision. Thier white cloaks unspolit, the warriors of Soar ate with quiet dignity, talking in a low mumur amidst themselves whilst some took to mingling. Ceinwyn sighed, turning her stare back to Glyndr but just as she did, she caught Felyon's last words and sensed with a trained hunter's keeness, that between these pair, some brittle ground existed. Of course this wasn't wholly stranger - just as Soar had never been comfortable with Soar's mythical prowess so had Soar never been at ease with revealing itself. And now in one sharp push, they brought forth their greatest jewel warriors afters years of receding into the mists. "Gwaithdûr" she smiled at the warrior " Are you to looking forward to arriving in Gondor?" Granted the words acted as a diversion to dispell the tension, but even he must have heard the sadness lacing them. Felyon too she reckoned but then found herself not caring. I'll not be a false Queen.

Glyndr sat back, his ale tankard held in both hands, Ceinwyn's words had halted what could have been a difficult situation, He watched Gwaithdur with eyes that told the soldier nothing, Glyndr knew that the man tolerated him only because he had to, Because he was a loyal guard to the princess.
"You shall find the city much different to your own home" Glyndr said,to Ceinwyn, his ice blue eyes held a sudden warmth, He had heard the sadness in her voice, almost tangible in the air,"The customs and ways so unlike your own,you shall have much to learn," He stood to fetch more ale, "I can help teach you the customs and ways if you wish it,you do not ever have to feel alone, as I have said seek me out. I am easily found, Excuse me" Glyndr nodded a bow as he went for the ale.
"My lady," Felyon had also felt the deep sadness in her voice. "Please allow me to teach you in the skills of art,I shall be more than honoured to do so, I too know what it is like to feel abandoned and alone , withno one to share your worries, as Glyndr has said, you need never be alone" Felyon's warm smile held the compassion he felt.
He glanced up as Glyndr returned with another flagon of ale, he saw a strange mood had taken his friend, he was concerned. He and Glyndr were so close, they almost knew each other's thoughts.
Glyndr was silent as he drank two more ales, "Please excuse me my lady", He stood and bowed again to Ceinwyn,"The Inn is too warm, I need the cool air of the night, I shall walk a while under the stars".
Glyndr remembered Ceinwyn's question to Gwaithdur, he wondered what the soldier's answer would be, yet deep in his heart he already knew, He wondered why he ever gave in to his Elflord father and joined his elite army, there was so much more he desired in life than the life of a captain seconded to Gondor.
Glyndr looked up at the starbright sky .He felt freedom at least for a while as he walked under the heavens.

Ceinwyn's spirits lifted slightly at the elves evident warmth, a beacon of hope in a future she saw as nothing more then faniful chains. Smiling at Felyon she nodded as he spoke of art. " Ah to master that skill! I haven't devoted as much time to it in the past as I perhaps should have but then in Soar, I was part of the security council...my voice actually counted for something ; with relish that I used it" she grinned with a glint of mischeif residing in her eyes as they fell on Glyndr face, troubled she noted - perhaps he too being an elf, felt the same pull of freedom she herself yearned for; holding his eyes with her own, she smiled, a smile of mutual understanding. Watching as he rose, she turned back to Felyon. " Your friend -he seems troubled...I am sorry" she sighed quietly " I shouldn't be brooding on the inevitable"..but Gondor, she thought inwardly, sounds so vast - so lonely and isolated; how can anything man make even compare to the rugged charm of Soar. Of her home. " Where do you come from?" she asked with soft curiosity, intruiged in elvish heritage which seemed as much a mystery to her as Soar was to other people. " Once an elf strayed through our mists - one from somewhere called Mirkwood? It is a legend fathers tell thier children around open fires, of the lone elf whom settled here and married one of Soar's maidens, tainting our blood. A folktale I think but it still inspires people even now.

Even those from outside our borders...I am sure you must have heard those rumours" she smiled wistfully, resting her head in her hands. " What were you told to expect of us - of me? Did they not give you a breifing?" and then the nagging fear that perhaps Eldarion wouldn't like, would despise her or attempt to shun her from prying eyes. Close his ears to Ceinwyn's views. " We are too of a kind then you and I" she mused listlessly, thoughts drifting to the spectacle of her wedding. Shuddering at the mere notion, she turned back to Gwaithdûr , her most trusted guard in the ranks of her people. " Did my father say anything of when you were to leave?" I only pray, she sighed inwardly, that it may not be too soon. Ceinwyn yawned briefly after a while of swilling the mead in her tankard, easing into Felyon's company with the perfect warmth of one she'd known for years. Excusing herself when the night drew to a close, she ambled for a time in the moonlit gardens, pacing through the shubbery with a subtle grace. Unclipping the cloak at her shoulder she folded it over her slender arm, until catching sight of Glyndr, she moved to stand placidly at his side, uplifting her face to the stars. " Beautiful aren't they? It's so easy to get lost in their - thier freedom"

Responding to Ceinwyn's question, Gwaithdûr said, "Your father has ordered me to remain here until you dismiss me from your service, milady." And as much as I should like to go home, I pray it is none to soon, for I fear for your safety here. Gwaithdûr, however, did not dare say this aloud."

Felyon stared at the Inn door, He frowned, his mind on Glyndr. Cienwyn's voice snapped him back suddenly.
He took a sip of crystal wine, moss green eyes shining emerald in the candlelight , He smiled at Ceinwyn.
Both he and Glyndr looked somewhat out of place amongst the broad, loud, bearded Gondorian soldiers.
Both had that etherial presence that Elves had, pale, beautiful, with almost translucent skin and bright fire in their eyes.
Felyon even more out of place with his elegant sensitive manner, his braided , pale silky hair. Tall and slender in his deep emerald robes.
On many occasions Glyndr had ended up in a brawl, and still frquently did, protecting Felyon from rough, ill mannered men who had taunted Felyon, shouting insults and vulgar suggestions at their so called "girly" Elf.
Felyon nibbled at a piece of cheese,"I am so glad that you wish to learn the magic of colour and light with me,I know that you shall make an excellent pupil, I look forward to our first lesson.
He stared deep into his wine goblet, "Yes Glyndr is unusually quiet" his voice full of concern,He looked up at Ceinwyn, "But then he is very unpredictable" he smiled a worried smile.
Felyon helped Ceinwyn to a bowl of berries and cream, he was well tutored in etiquettte and manners.
"Ah ,the Elf of Mirkwood, oh that is no myth, I come from Marisound , a land of mountain and sea, it is just north of Mirkwood ,To our race it is history,It is not legend,it is in truth."
He smiled a soft Sylentor smile, "As to what we have been told of you, a rare beauty of royal blood, a legend and myth of an ancient race brought in sorrow to these lands".
Felyon nibbled at a bright red berry,"Rumour has it that you are a woman who thinks as a man and that she shall put the prince well in his place!" Felyon wished her goodnight as she left, he felt a kindred spirit in her.
Glyndr stood at the edge of a pond, the night sky mirrored in
its crystal surface,He looked skyward, deep in thought.
His welltrained senses told him of another's presence,. the presence he knew, meant him no harm.
"Beautiful" he echoed her words."yes it is" Glyndr turned his gaze to her,The starlight still reflected in ice blue, He smiled,"You should not be here alone, have you slipped the watchful eye of that oh so diligent guard? He frowned slightly, "The night is cold, you should wear your cloak, here",
Glyndr tok offhis black and silver cloak, he lay it about her shoulders, "Tomorrow night starlight and the dark sky shall be chandeliers and tall stone cielings of the royal hall, a ball in your honour," He looked again into her eyes, starlight on water still reflected there, "Such a prison would kill Felyon and myself, it is enough to be trapped in these strange lands, without bowing to a world I should rather flee than live in".

" My you speak as if reading my thoughts: I had not thought that a gift of elves" she mused ruefully, as her head lolled over to one side in drear thought. " I have heard of Gondor so often of folklore...mere tales when we went on skirmishes and camped around the fireside. Then it was enough and now - not it would still be enough.I have no wish to be Queen of anything but I can't understand why people can't understand that? They think being a ruler - at least in name - is all pretty dresses ribbons. For me now that is perhaps me fate. To grow old behind bars of ettiquette..I know these Gondorians don't listen to thier women but alas I am not from this part of the world! It's so diffenent..so very different" Pulling Glyndr's cloak tight about her shoulders, she blanched at the mention of the ball, the stiffling mantle of expectation already heavy upon her spirits. But I shan't let it defeat me, she cursed inwardly. I must never let it defeat me. " I feel trapped in bulings such as you describe - of stone. It is like a prison for me too you see" she sighed blandly, wondering again how her parents could have betrayed her blatantly to the prying eyes of Middle Earth. " Even the air is different here. Heavy air" she mused with a frown when laughing, she turned her soft blue stare to the pond. " Or perhaps that is my aura making everything seem bleak and forboding..a rough jewel don't you think?" she grinned wryly as the wind stirred loose tendrils of honey gold by her cheeks. What a strange deck of cards fate has dealt me, she mused, that now I stand with an elf on the edges of a lake talking about my assention to the thone. And how much I abhore it. Smiling at the thought of breaking even that coveture of ettiquette, she turned a breif glance back to the tavern where the lights of the candles were dappled through the windows. "Gwaithdûr is just wary of this new country we come into that is all...my people are very protective of outside out borders for here it is not acceptable for me to defend myself. I must wait on others" when frowning, her hand moved to the pendant at her neck, a delicate crytsal swan, tiny but perfect.

" How strange - sometimes I think it would have been better for me to marry Elwine..at least they let thier women feel" she noted bitterly, bowing herhead to peer at the swan. " It's my own symbol given to me at birth. They say it's the same as the one our ancestors carried when one of our maidens paired with an elf. I am said to stem staight from her. I always thought it a myth but Feylon says its not so; well at least then one of us had the right of choice" when turning directly to face him with a bold but warm stare unique to the women of Soar, she asked" Tomorrow, please do not leave me. I will know nothing, no-one and you two though I have only met you this night are of some comfort to me. You understand me" she smiled earnestly.Better perhaps then this Prince of mine would she wagered, but then as rumours were told her, so they were spoken of him. What manner of a man woud she find, this person who was bound to share her life? With an involantry shudder, she drew her cloak tighter about her shoulders in a feverant wish that all this anxious waiting was over. If only I had some word of truth about Eldarion, some inkling of what sort of man he is? What he expects of me? For hs culture this arranging of marriages is natural..yet what if he scorns me?

The Kellquenti captain smiled at Ceinwyn's observation that he could see her thoughts, he almost could, Elves had that gift when they chose to use it.
He smiled , his eyes held a distant look, almost in another world, "Yes, of course I shall not leave you, neither will Felyon,"
The Elf returned to their world, "I know that he is excited about your lessons in art, I warn you, he seldom speaks of little else than of art or music!"
Glyndr looked with apprehension at the Tavern,"That guard of yours is probably very worried that you have slipped his grasp, and wandrered off alone. No doubt he shall come running soon, a guard dog ,all growl and show".
He had not taken kindly to Gwaithdur, "I am glad he has not noticed you missing, it gives us freedom to speak with each other".
"Let us walk a while", he took her arm, and led her to walk at the riverside, "The ball tomorrow night shall be a grand affair, Felyion shall of course attend and I have been summoned as captain in the Royal army, also to attend, I shall watch for you,"
Glyndr frowned slightly ,he hoped Eldarion would try to understand Ceinwyn's unfamiliarity with the customs and protocol of Gondor, but he was secretly afraid that he would not.

" Some freedom at least" she noted before with an involantry shudder, she bowed her head against her chest with a small smile curving upon her lips. " Oh but art and music are two of my passions!" she sighed with an earnest warmth " it shall pass the time well enough in that draftee old castle - tiered or so I have heard...I wonder, do they have gardens there? Not as wild as my native flowers perhaps but still" she shurgged" a rose by any other name is still a rose is it not?" she grinned wolfishly, pushing a tendril of hair behind her ear." I am glad that you will watch for me - and a dance too for I have heard much of elves and thier grace on the dancefloor" her eyes, so soft a pale blue, drifted listessly to the horizon, a deep indigo with spinkles if winking silver. " Now that is freedom" she noted pointedly at the sheer vastness, a sight which could be seen even by Eldarion as he too stood on the balcony of his chamber, gazing thoughtfully over the rumpled planes of grass where his bride rested this night.

For a moment the Princess felt a stir within her stomach, a curious pang..shaking her head, she frowned before running a hand through her hair. " I must be tired! I had the most strangest feeling just a moment ago..as of there was someone here - or I was elsewhere. I - I'm being stupid" she smiled wanly before darting an anxious stare about the shadowed gardens. " I think I shall bring abit of Soar to Gondor - some folk talkes or songs maybe. It would do that Prince of thiers - of mine" she corrected herself irritably " to know something of thier Queen" not that I was ever destined for this she mused dryly..or perhaps I was? Fate has ever dealt strange cards to those who would rather refuse them - and the Valar know I'd be a mere peasant and marry for love! She turned her face down to the shimmer of river, stooping and dangling her figners in the depths. For a moment she crouched there, deep within the folds of thought before, rising once more, she clasped Glyndr's hands with a warm, earnest smile. " Your kind words have eased me somewhat...thank you my lord Glyndr" she bowed her head, before, pacing gracefully back to the tavern it seemed she'd barely closed her eyes in the fitfull lull of sleep before morning dawned; and with it the voaltile arena of courtly ettiquette. Eldarion was waiting.

Staring deep into the water, Glyndr stayed long after Ceinwyn had left him for the tavern, He felt uneasy, a fear deep inside, a fear he could not place or understand.
He was so deep in his thoughts that he did not notice another appear at his side,
"Glyndr", Felyon's soft voice spoke at his side , the Sylentor's hand on his arm, "Glyndr, what troubles you?" warm moss green eyes searched cold ice blue.
"It is nothing my friend, I think perhaps the plight of the princess has brought sharply to me the freedom both you and I have lost",He smiled "Come Felyon we have a trying day tomorrow, let us get what peace we can",
Felyon nodded, "Yes, trying, yet I think interesting" he said as they returned to the tavern.
Dawn's light found Felyon at Glyndr's window, he looked out over the cobbled courtyard at the gathering Gondorian escort and the Soarian entourage,.
"Hurry Glyndr" Felyon scolded "You are already a half hour late!"
Felyon had been sent to find the errant captain, "well hurry, do not just stand there glowering at me!" Felyon strode across the wooden floor, his silk robes rustling as he moved.
Glyndr gave his friend an icy glare as he fastened the last buckle on his black leather tunic, He had not rested well and was in a black mood.
"Let us get this over with" Glyndr growled as he pushed the Sylentor out of the door.
Finally mounted , Glyndr turned to the assembly, "We go now to the city, where you shall enjoy the hospitality of prince Eldarion", He bowed before leading the entourage on the road to the city.
The Kellquenti rode close to Ceinwyn, his gaze always on Gwaithdur, there was something about the calm efficiency with which the guard seemed to ride at the princesse's side that held his Elvish attention, this mortal concerned him.
"My lady, " Glyndr bowed , "We shall be but one hour before we reach the gates, remember my words"
He smiled as he rode forward to the head of the escort. He passed Felyon on the way,The Sylentor was on his way to ride with Ceinwyn, His pencils and sketch book ready to portray a future Queen entering Gondor's Royal city.

Ceinwyn dressed that morning with stiff unease, donning a gown of silver hue, the etheral colour of Soar; the ancient origin of freedom and power. Her honey gold hair hung loose down her back, soft blue eyes distant, lost within the memories of eveything she was leaving behind. Ah Valar give me strength! Goodness knows I need it this day - this day of all days...she mounted her gelding with practised ease as always, lips drawn into a tight smile as they passed the hoardes of bystanders, gawping eager eyed at this delicate nymph like creature bearing herself proudly down thier steets. Her stomach clenched anxiously and yet no outward display at least showed of her nervousness. To her guards she was as unspoilt and self-assured as ever; the gates opened.
The morning broke with a brisk southernly breeze, vast expanse of power blue sky the epitome of a perfect summer's day and yet Ceinwyn's spirits were as turbulent as a wild winter's eve. Hold fast, she mused inwardly, it will be over soon enough...

The Gondorians, dark haired and grey eyed lined the streets, garbed in a peculiar fashion to her forgien eyes, sober colours with veils woven within thier hair. The whitewashed slate of the walls bounced the sun's rays off its surface, draping the combined entourage with a subtle sheen, whisperes floating within the crowds of this mythical Princess and her people, and also she noted, of the elves. How revered they are! But then they are the fairest of races..how could they not be?
An atmospheric curiosity seemed to shroud Minis Tirth that day, merged with an awed respect as Ceinwyn rode to the middle tier shouldered by Feylon and Gwaithdur with Glyndr leading them. Shooting a brief almost pleading stare to Feylon, her eyes widened as they reached thier destination and there, with an air of perfect serenity, stood Eldarion. He was coloured as the other Gondorians, though the taint of his mother left his features with a charm quite unlike his fellow mortals. His cloak seemed to froth around his ankles, the white tree of Gondor engraved in melted silver on his tunic. Striding from the line of guards, he bowed to Glyndr.

" Good to see you again Lord Glyndr - I trust you are well? - and the Princess?" he added with careful regard before Ceinwyn herself slid from her horse, pacing towards him with a boldness unique only to the women of her race, she courtseyed gracefully. " My Lord..I - It is honourable to be here" she fumbled for the words hastily, cursing herself for the sheer dullness of her voice. Can it be so evident I hate this turn of fate? Well - what am I to say to a betrothed who I have never set eyes on before this day? Eldarion gazed on her for a moment, the woman who'd stirred so much speculation, so many rumours. Soar has indeed yeilded it's Jewel, he mused in stunted appreciation as she stood, quite straight, in fair contrast to the dark colouring of those nearest to her." The honour my Lady, is all mine...forgive me for not riding out to you myself..I was detained" Too detained to meet his bride? How careless he must be of the whole sorry mess? She cursed dryly, unable to keep the bitterness from her voice." A man must do as he pleases" when exchanging a breif glance with Glyndr, her dissapointment that Eldarion treated her just as another of his subjects, was evident. The Prince caught the flicker of something unameable within her voice, causing him to guard his own expression with strict reserve. Her mind is already set to hate me, he noted, turning to Feylon and smiling. " Ah my artist! Have you the sketch for the hall of my fathers?" he asked with earnest regard as Ceinwyn was led away like a horse waiting to be broken, to her chambers.

Gwaithdûr did not like this Prince Eldarion. He trusted him as much as he would an orc. Elvish blood in him or nay, he is not worthy of the great Jewel of Soar! Why, he treats her like a possession! Gwaithdûr thought with disdain. During the meeting with the prince, Gwaithdûr ever kept one hand on the hilt of his sword and the other on his bow. Fortunately--or perhaps unfortunately, however you wished to see it--the meeting went peacefully and his weapons remained sheathed as he followed the princess. Greatly did he admire her, not only for her beauty but for her remarkable spirit. Had fate not played such a vile trick on her, he might have asked her to marry him one day. But he knew now that would never happen. Still, he would gladly lay down his life for her without hesitation, and he would obey whatever she commanded of him.

*Etaina, I hope you don't mind my joining in here, but I know how well you write and enjoy posting in your threads; if you would like me to remove my character, just let me know.

She stood at the top of the stairs, watching as the young woman was brought in and led to her chambers like a dog, not like a Princess soon to marry Eldarion. Soon she saw someone else coming in, and she could only assume he was with the Princess as an escort. Gwenneth sighed. She could tell at some point in time there was going to be words between the Princess's attendant and the Prince, and as much as she felt sorry for the Princess at what she was going through, she had no choice but to side with the Prince. She was, after all, a faithful servant of Gondor, and all because he had saved her life once.
Funny how these things happen, she mused. She saw the Prince enter and head in the opposite direction, so she followed to make sure his needs were attended to, and find out what he might want done for his bride-to-be.
She found him eventually, just entering his quarters, and she said softly,"My Lord Prince, I would speak with you."

After a conversation that would better have been handled by someone else, she made her way to the room of the Princess. She had made a mistake when dealling with the Prince and regretted it. I knew I should have kept my mouth shut, I knew it. But no, I had to give my opinion, which around here seems to count for nothing. Why do I do this to myself? The thoughts rambled through her brain, and she almost responded out loud to the last one but bit her tongue instead. She arrived at the room of the Princess, and knocked on the door. A young attendant answered it, and she told her that she wished to see the Princess. She was allowed to step inside, and she looked at the sad young woman and said, "My name is Gwenneth, and I am sorry I was not made available to you on your arrival, nor that I was able to properly escort you to your room. However, I would like you to know that should you have a need, whatever it is, I will do my best to attend to them, as I have been assigned to do." She stood there in silence then, hands behind her back, waiting for a response from the Princess.

OOC Welcome lell)
The two Elves walked wiyh Ceinwyn and Gwaithdur to meet Eldarion.
Felyon placed a slender hand reassuringly on her arm as he returned her anxious look with a warm mossgreen smile.
Glyndr too seemed to sense her unease and glanced over his shoulder briefly, ice blue enforced moss green's reassurance.
"My Lord Eldarion", Glyndr bowed, "I am well my Lord "
The Elf stood, his head held proudly,He dared to look the prince in the eye."The princess Ceinwyn awaits you,"
He turned and stood back, he nodded with a half smile
"My lady, have courage" he whispered,to Ceinwyn. Glyndr's eyes met Gwaithdur's, he had seen how tense the soldier was, "We must speak soon " he said discreetly as he turned to face Eldarion.
Felyon bowed low "My Lord I have completed the sketching , I have now to begin the portrait in oils, for this I must ask that the princess should sit with me for at least two hours each day for a week if the portrait is to be completed quickly".
Both Elves watched as Ceinwyn was led away, their souls went out to her, Felyon's sensitive heart especially.
Glyndr ran his hand through his long hair, he watched the Sylentor from atop a pile of hay bales. They had gone to the stables to talk, too many curious ears walked the streets.
"The princess shall find life so strange here, she must feel so alone".
Felyon sighed as he retied one of his braids that had become unravelled, "I know, but at least I shall be able to speak with her each day.and if I know you, you shall find your sneaky way into court to find her also" . The Sylentor played absent mindedly with the braid "There is one who may be her companion"
"Who ?" Glyndr asked with interest.
"The Elf maid, you remember her, she serves at court" Felyon smiled.
"Ah , yes" Glyndr's eyes flashed silver,he smiled wickedly, "I always remember a pretty Elleth".
"Glyndr! do you never stop chasing females!?" Felyon said sharply.
"No," Glyndr said with a smile, The smile faded, "I hope you are right, and she finds a kindred spirit within those walls".

no not at all, welcome!

Eldarion ushered her into the refined decadance of his quarters, striding to the desk at the back of the room and pawing over maps and several scrunched balls of parchment."Minis Tirith seems to be so much busier then usual..the charm of Soar I presume" he grinned doltishly when frowning at her following sentance, he leaned against the marble pillar." I know she is of - unique temperament..you think her guards will cause me hassle? Well why have they any need? I mean her no harm" he smiled placatingly " indeed how could any man!" he noted earnestly though his smile was drawn into a tight, stony grimace. " She'll not stand against me - or if she does then. Well she is in my country now and Gondor expects not compliance, but understanding. If she cannot accept what we hold to be right and good and true then alas. The fault then lies with her" he shrugged, though the subtle anxiety was not gone from his voice. She resents me for the yeilding of her freedom, her home and her right to chose, he mused. " I'll not condone her for wishing to be elsewhere, she's young and has known only her own ways and customs. But she is in Gondor now - does she think she is the only one who has given up thier right of choice?" he scowled archly before shaking his head. " Send her my wishes" though goodness knows she'll scorn them..willful creature!

*****

Ceinwyn's spirits mellowed to a sombre bitterness as she paced in a half-hearted circle about the room, sashes of silver silk falling to the floor from arched, stone windows. Her entire soul seemed to ache, crave the wild wilderness of her home, her birth place. Unbuttoning the clasp of her cloak she tossing it to a corner, her steps became languid, eyes drifting vacantly to the brisk breeze entering via the window. At least the sorry procession is over..I cannot be gawped at like some obediant puppy or tamed wildcat. Mother why oh why did you ever agree to this? She cursed inwardly, you who values freedom and respect above everthing? And yet who sent mere here, devoid of every status safe a Princess. Not a councilour or a healer or an archer...just a woman. Shaking her head dourly, she perced herself in the windowseat, tucking her knees up to her chin. The bustling humdrum of market life echoed beneath her turret, shouts of men bartering thier goods merging within one another in an energetic buzz. So much like our markets - though the goods are somewhat different she noted as here it was velvet and silk which passed for gold, not furs or swords.Perhaps there smiths cannot make them with as much zeal as Soar..they cannot.

They could not. Glancing almost idly about her chamber, it was fashioned with the subtle grace of elves, spacious yet cosy, not the wicker, high rftered halls of her own people. The Door opened then as an elleth entered, eying her with careful cortesey. And I wonder what rumours she has heard of me..she mused irritably, perhaps that I am as wayward as they say? And yet they know nothing of me, nothing. Who gave them the sword of a judge? "My name is Gwenneth, and I am sorry I was not made available to you on your arrival, nor that I was able to properly escort you to your room. However, I would like you to know that should you have a need, whatever it is, I will do my best to attend to them, as I have been assigned to do." she spoke with perfect prose as Ceinwyn bowed her head mutely. Another elf in Gondor? My, my.." You were assigned by Eldarion? Or perhaps one of his minions? That option seems more likely" she noted curtly, still simmering over his earlier slight. He seems quite a man to avoid petty details..such as his bride..Sighing with the crisp ache of loneliness resonating through her voice, she smiled, a genuine smile. " I am glad to have you - and an elleth. It seems those who have been kindest to me have been elves" she sighed wistfully, thinking back with a fond smile to Feylon and Glyndr. " So - this ball - thing" she frowned to the piles of gowns in disarray at the foot of her bed. " is tonight. Oh the joy -" she muttered dryly before staring back out to the window. " Are there any gardens here Gwenneth?"

OOC: Thank you for the welcome, I appreciate it!

Gwenneth smiled a tiny smile. The princess liked gardens! Excellent, they had something in common. "Yes we have beautiful gardens. For a while after I was brought...arrived here, I tended those gardens. Then the Prince thought that I could better serve in other ways. But they are still my favorite place to be, there and the stables, when I get a chance to get to them."
She hoped the princess had not noticed the minor slip of the tongue she had committed. She did not want to explain the nature of how she came to be there, at least not yet. While some might find the Prince's actions admirable, others, she knew, felt that the Prince had garnered himself a first class slave. She had heard the whispers when she had accompanied the cooks' attendants' to market. 'There is the Prince's little slave girl' 'I heard she can only leave his service when she saves his life in return, that's why he rarely lets her out.' 'You know how she serves him, don't you,' followed by cackling. Vile nonsense from the vile faction of people of Gondor, the ones who drank too much ale and had no lives of their own. Others were nice to her, yes, but there was still always that look in their eyes, like they were choosing their words very carefully, so as not to give her cause to anger.
She snapped back to reality, and realized the princess had said she would like to visit the gardens in a bit, but that she should like to finish tending to some things first.
"Yes, m'lady. All you need do is send one of your attendants outside your room to find me, and I will come as quickly as I can."
She bowed her head, and exitted the room. She told the attendants where she intended to be, and slipped down the hall quietly. She went out a side door and down the path to the stables. She pushed open the door and entered. The warm smell of hay greeted her, and she began to walk the rows of stalls, looking for one horse in particular. "Ahhh, there you are," she whispered softly.
Windseeker was her horse, had been her only friend for a long time. He was a big bay, and when she rode him she felt free, the wind whipping through her hair as they galloped, just the two of them. Until the day she was felled, and then had to come here. Now stop it, she chided herself. If it were not for Prince Eldarion, you would be dead, probably would have been raped and murdered and your body left lying there in the woods for who knows how long! Prince Eldarion did you a favor by bringing you here. Is there anything you want for? No. Is there anything that you desire the Prince does not try to obtain for you? No. And all he asks in return is obedience and gratitude, both of which you are sorely lacking in. It is not as if you are asked to share his bed or do anything despicable. The only thing you cannot do is leave without telling him first. That's not so hard. She swallowed hard, and unbidden, a tear rolled down her cheek. Sometimes the words and looks just got to be so difficult to deal with. The things they would whisper, things she would never have thought someone could falsely conjur up in their minds about her. She had never even been kissed, not anything more than a peck when she was a child back home, because she didn't know anyone there, and was afraid to try to make friends. There was one she found attractive, but she had heard such things about him, and besides, he would never notice her in the first place.
From behind her, she heard a soft footstep.

"Felyon," Glyndr leapt from the top of the hay bales as lithely as a cat, "The Valar have granted me a wish", He nodded towards Gweneth who stood at her horse's stall,
"No!" Felyon grabbed his Kellquenti friend's arm, "No leave the Elleth, she has suffered enough, she does not need you to break her heart".
"Felyon, I break no Elleth's heart unless she chooses it" Glyndr pushed Felyon backwards into the hay.
Felyon watched as he untangled himself from hay, his emerald robes, and his pale silky braid that had now completely unravelled. "Glyndr be careful, be kind" He thought.
"My lady, you have a fine stallion, much I think akin to my own, an animal of Elven breeding", Glyndr smiled his iceblue smile, " I have seen you at court many times, I did not know you frequented the stables, such a lowly place" he teased,
Glyndr stroked the Bay's arched neck "Yes a fine animal, perhaps you may like to ride out with me? a race perhaps?" The Kellquenti Elf nodded towards his own silver grey stallion , who snorted and pawed at the door of his stall, angry that his master should dare touch another horse.
Glyndr's bright ice blue eyes shone with an eager light,"let me know when" he had seen Felyon approaching.
"My lady take no heed of this Kellquenti captain", Felyon felt Glyndr's ice daggers again,Felyon continued "I hear you are to attend the Princess, please let Glyndr or myself know if we can be of any assistance in her learning of Gondorian ways , the ball tonight shall be a terror to her, help her if you can"
Glyndr nodded "Yes, Please help her".
Glyndr waited until Felyon had gone to stand in the daylight at the door to re braid again ,his hair.
"Elleth I mean what I say, a challenge? A race? I shall attend the ball tonight , find me tell me then your answer".

She had been stunned into silence when she had turned slightly and seen him standing there. He had stroked Windseeker's neck so delicately, and her thoughts had turned to a jumble. He had asked her to ride with him, challenged her to a race. She closed her eyes and still saw those eyes looking deep into her, as if drinking her in. Her heart was pounding, and she didn't know how to respond. The other, the artist, had told her to try to help the Princess as best she could...The Princess! She had completely forgotten her first and foremost duty! She gave Windseeker one final stroke and then ran for the palace, forgetting everything but that she must get to the princess and help her begin to prepare for the ball...
Such were her thoughts as she rounded a corner and skidded to a halt mere inches from slamming into the Prince. He looked at her with arched brows, and said softly, "Gwenneth, since when has it ever been a custom here to race down halls and around corners?"
She bit her lip. "I am sorry my Lord Prince. I was detained from returning to the princess's room, I had gone out to inspect the gardens, to ensure that she would find them to her satisfaction, and became lost in a daydream." She fervently hoped that he would not see the lie in her eyes. He continued to look at her, waiting for the rest of her explanation. "I am sorry, my Lord Prince, such a thing is not appropriate for a lady of your court who holds the responsibility of your bride in her hands. Please forgive me." She lowered her eyes to the floor.
Eldarion sighed. "Well I suppose any woman's mind might wander on a night when there is to be a grand feast and ball, and whether I like it or not, my most loyal member of court is, after all, a woman. Go now, and attend to my bride to be. But do it slowly." She looked up at Eldarion, and as he turned, she said, without thinking, "My lord Prince, why do you treat her so?" As soon as the words were out, she regretted them. He turned to face her, and his face had become a mask of stone. "How have I been treating her, Gwenneth?" When she hesitated, he raised his voice. "If you have need to tell me something I have done to wrong her, I would like to know what it is!" She took a step back, but it didn't help. The Prince merely took a step forward, keeping her in arm's reach. He grabbed her arm now, and asked her again. She blurted out, "Some of the people here at court are saying things about you!"
He released her with a shake and said in a controlled voice, "Such as?"
"That you really have no desire to care for this woman that comes to be your bride, and that you treat her as a possession. I have heard them whispering." She had dropped her voice almost to a whisper herself. Eldarion put his hand on her shoulder, and said, "I would think that you would be the last to believe rumor and whisper after the things I have heard have been whispered about you." She began to turn scarlet, knowing full well which rumors he was speaking of, and he chuckled. "Do not fear, my elleth. For the Prince of Gondor has no intention of making those rumors come to fact." He sighed again, and rubbed her arm where he had grabbed it. "I am sorry. my head aches with all these arrangements, and I fear I lost my temper a bit too hastily with you." He then dropped his hand and said softly, "Now if you could go please, and attend to Ceinwyn, and then yourself. Your gown should be in your room. You will attend tonight, not only as an attendant to my betrothed, but also as a guest." With that he left her and went to finish the business he had been on his way to tend to.
Gwenneth took a deep breath, and hurried to Ceinwyn's room, thinking about the ball. Her smile faded momentarily when she remembered the captain's request that she give him her answer that night at the ball. A race on horseback! Against him? Never would she dream of being able to beat him, and he would win what as his prize? What did she have that would suit a man in his position? But she shook her head and pushed all thought of him and those eyes of his, that raven black hair, to the back of her mind. She had to get the Princess ready. She knocked on the door and had it opened for her, slipping into the room and preparing to assist the Princess of Soar.

Gwaithdûr stood outside Ceinwyn's door. He was pleased that she had been able to find companionship in this Elf-maiden, but it made him like this dreadful place no more. He yearned for Soar, but would not suffer leaving the princess alone in this foreign land. He imagined that Prince Eldarion would be about two feet shorter were the two of them alone in Soar. The thought brought an amused smile to Gwaithdûr's face. Yes, it would definitely please him to duel the prince of Gondor. However, he would not do anything until Ceinwyn commanded it of him, so he would watch and wait...

*Please read the OCC thread for information pertaining to Gwenneth.

As soon as she had helped the Princess decide on a gown that suited her, and made sure that there was nothing else that she was lacking, she left her to her dressing attendants and went to her own rooms, to prepare herself. This was not the first time she had attended a ball, but was one of the few times that she was going as a guest and not only to serve some ambassador or dignitary.
As promised, her gown was laid out on her bed when she arrived in her room. It was a gorgeous deep blue, that contrasted enough with her emerald green eyes that it made them appear to glow. There was a silver and blue cape to accompany it, although it was apparently only for show, as it was not thick enough to actually keep one warm, and there was silver embroidery on the bodice and hem. It is so beautiful, she thought when she saw it. Almost as beautiful as the gown to be worn by the Princess Ceinwyn herself.
She bathed, thankful she was not a noblewoman, she didn't think she would be able to handle all those people around assisting her. She perfumed and powdered herself and then began getting dressed. Once the gown was on, she had to call one of the palace attendants to help her make some small adjustments, and then she looked to her hair. The attendant helped her sweep it up and when she was done, she could not believe she was looking at herself.
When she was finished preparing herself, she left her rooms and went to back to the Princess Ceinwyn's room. On the way there, she was informed that she was to go to the Prince's quarters, for he wished to see her.
When she arrived in Eldarion's quarters, he had the look of a man on the brink of losing his mind. When he saw Gwenneth standing there, he snapped, "What are you smiling about?" She quickly forced the smile from her face and said, "I was told you wished to see me, my Lord Prince. How may I be of aid?"
He looked at her for a moment and shooed the attendants out of the room.
"I need your opinion on something," he said, and drew her closer to him, producing a small box. When he opened it, she gasped and stared. There was a perfectly simple, yet exquisite necklace in it. It was silver and sapphire and glowed with blue fire, but it was delicate, perfect for the perfect jewel that was the Princess.
"Judging from the look on your face, you approve?" She nodded mutely, and the Prince laughed. "I shall present it to her tonight then, if I can get a moment of privacy with her without getting kicked in the shins-or worse."
When she left the room, never before had she felt so jealous.

" Oh stop dithering!" she cursed irritably to the wispy maids scuttering about her, holding veils up against her hair or tugging at her shift. Shooing them away as they dragged a comb through her hair, her temper ever volatile, simmered to a palpable fury. Oh the insipid little things! Do they think I cannot dress myself? I'm a woman not blind deaf and dumb!" I think I can manage myself well enough" she scowled bluntly as the maids moved to stand at the edges of the room whilst Ceinwyn paced restressly, hands resting her slender hips as she stared blandly about the numerous gowns, veils, cloaks all strewn over the dresser and bed. For a moment she sighed, walking to the mayflowers set in a vase on the table set beside her bed, and stroked the leathery petals in vacant musing." Lady" one of the maids ventured in a thinly anxious voice, stepping daintly from the mute line of women and pausing before Ceinwyn's distant glance. " We can leave if you like - the ball is not until tonight. Perhaps a walk in the gardens?" she suggested hopefully having caught wind of the Jewel's desire of nature. Ceinwyn snapped blearily from her daydream, staring at the maid. " Come now I can't dissapoint my betrothed by looking a mess. I'm sure that would scar his pride" she scoffed richly " but I will see Feylon when I am ready - call Gwaithdûr in when I am dressed if you would. He is my equal. That I am determined will never change" she noted pointedly, with a voice of absolute iron. The maid she later knew as Bella, smiled fretfully, bowing her head before the Princess, taking one of the mayflowers from the vase, slipped it behind her ear. " We briad flowers into the hair of our women in my country - veils only sheild beauty. And why indeed would one want to do that? Gwenneth has beautiful hair - I hope she does not wear a veil" she mused quietly before stooping at the foot of her bed.

" Now I know it was here somewhere...ah yes here it is" she smiled, shaking out a gown from the trunk and holding it against her. Unlike the elaborately stitched gowns of Gondor's royalty, Soar profesed a subtle grave, a wild beauty which showed in everything from song even to thier feats in battle. Her mother's gown fitted snugly about her lithe, slender frame, crisp white linen throughout save for the sleeves which were a transparent silver. Droplets of white peal hung from her ears as Bella gathered the honey gold tendrils from Ceinwyn's face and let them fall loose in a splendid array down her back. " I hope the crowds did not expect me to be dressed as a Gondorian just yet. I want to show them the beauty of where I come from - of my people" she mused, resting a hand on the bare neck where the dress fell into a graceful v. " Would you like some of the flowers to be braided into your hair my Lady? I am no expert but I can try" offered Bella as Ceinwyn gave a small smile. " You are very kind. As you wish" as Bella's spindly, neat fingers wove the ivory petals into the lower lenghts of Ceinwyn's hair." My Lady" Bella sighed standing back. It was not the extravagant garb of riches which made the Princess seem so carelessly beautiful - the mere fabric of her charm lay in her spirit, her wit..the subtle clothing she wore only enchanced the delicate beauty of what was professed the Jewel of Soar..and clothed as such, with her elven heritage so clear in her face, none could doubt it. She strode then towards the door, throwing it open with a bright smile at Gwaithdûr, linking her arm through his in habitual warmth." Come let us walk..I need someone from Soar with this minute and it cannot be any fun waiting for me! You must Feylon - you have already - but I mean know himas your friend. Please" she guided him through the draftee, somewhat oppresive corridors in seach of the elven artist Feylon. Pausing midway she stopped as Gwenneth appeared, so fair and beautiful in these halls of shadowed loneliness. " Ah Lady Gwenneth - who has flushed your cheeks so?" she teased

Glyndr arched an eyebrow in mild surprise as Gwenneth suddenly ran towards the stable door,
Felyon jumped back quickly from the doorway as she shot past him, he stared after her , his nimble fingers twisting the last piece of his braid.
"Glyndr!", He turned sharply and strode towards the Kellquenti Elf, "What have you done!? I told you to leave her", Felyon's usually soft voice raised,
Glyndr stared at him, "I have done nothing".
"That did not look like nothing to me," Felyon narrowed his eyes as he pushed Glyndr hard against the wall.
"I have told you, " Glyndr's eyes began to glow with ice blue fire,"I have done nothing" He pushed Felyon in the chest ,away from him sharply, "she just ran"
Glyndr stormed out of the stable door and across the cobbled yard.
The Sylentor ran to the door,"Do not just walk away when I am speaking to you !" he shouted after his friend, he pointed a slender finger at Glyndr."Listen to me!"
"Listen to what?" the Elf captain did not even stop or turn round, "you lecturing me as usual? I think not!"
Felyon ran after him "Wait! Glyndr" he gripped Glyndr's shoulder, turning him to face him "Sorry",
Glyndr smiled, He knew Felyon too well.
"Forgive me , I was too hasty, It is just that I know what you are like with females" Felyon returned the smile.
The Kellqenti put his arm around the Sylentor's shoulders "come on ,you have a portrait to begin, and I boring paperwork at the barracks"
The two Elves walked together towards the Royal palace, Nearing a street corner, they passsed two drunks, bellowing
and laughing loudly, Glyndr recognised them as two of a group who had caused trouble before, He tensed slightly as they drew closer.
"No, leave it", Felyon had seen Glyndr's movement and stance "ignore them, come let us go quickly"
The Louts started their usual taunts ,calling Felyon vulgar names, and screamed louder when one suggested that Felyon's relationship with Glyndr was more than just friends.
That did it.
Glyndr flew at them felling each with a well practiced kick and punch"Depraved Gondorian scum!" Glyndr kicked them again before leaving them in a heap , sprawled across the cobbles.
"I shall probably be in very serious trouble for that." Glyndr grinned at Felyon."I think they were off duty Royal guard"
"Oh", Felyon looked worried as they reached the steps.
"Do not look so worried", Glyndr said as he left Felyon at the steps ,
Felyon to go to await the princess, and Glyndr to leave for the barracks.
Glyndr did not go to the barracks, his mind too full of thoughts of a princess, an Elleth and a race, He walked instead, at the edge of the gardens ,Paperwork would have to wait
Felyon smiled as he looked around the bright room "Perfect!" he said as he prepared canvas and paint for aprincess.

"Forgive me my Lady, but you are to have your first sitting with Felyon today. and he is waiting for you. As to what has flushed my cheeks, only a whisper of a dream." She looked to Gwaithdûr, and looked shyly at the floor. She looked back up at Ceinwyn, and said softly, "My Princess if you follow me this way, I can take you directly to Felyon." They swept along the corridor, and Gwenneth knocked on the door. Hearing an affirmative, she pushed open the door, and escorted Ceinwyn to the chair she would sit in for the portrait. She motioned to another chair for Gwaithdûr, but she couldn't look at him. She turned to Ceinwyn and said softly, "My lady, I will return shortly. I have several thigs I need to take care of . Is there anything you require before I leave?" Ceinwyn shook her head, so Gwenneth swept back out of the room, and went to go review the gardens as she had told the Prince she had done earlier.
She was walking along and stopped at one of the benches. She sank down and sighed, thinking about the gift the Prince had for his bride to be. That necklace was exquisite! How she would love a gift as beautiful as that! Not that she would ever have one. Servants, even servants of the Prince of Gondor, did not receive gifts like that. For the five thousandth time since she had come to Gondor, she wished she had either never left her home that day, or had died of her injuries. She looked at the ground, and twisted a flower in her fingers. Presently, she saw motion out of the corner of her eye, and looked to the left. Her heart pounded. She realized he probably thought her rude for rushing off, and she knew she should apologize. She stood, and smoothed her dress, and walked over to him. She tapped him lightly on the shoulder, and when he turned, she swept into a semicurtsy, and cast her eyes down as she said, "My Lord Captain, I am sorry I left you so abruptly earlier. I had forgotten somethng that needed attending. Please forgive my rudeness."

Ceinwyn's eyes regained thier vacant look for a moment as her thoughts ranged so clearly elsewhere until sighing, she eased idly back in the studded chair, hands flopping over the curved edges of hand rests. " So Feylon - where is this to go? Or has the Prince not told you that" goodness knows that wouldn't suprise me...her foot tapped restlessly on the floor as the afternoon wore on, sliding into a state of dreary musings, most set in her past of lush freedom rather then the chains which would secure her postion from this night onwards. Her delicate features were drawn into a guarded, slightly hostile smile as Eldarion pryed the door open, gazing in stunted silence at his betrothed as she sat in composed ease before Feylon. " It's as if the Valar have crafted her from their own hands! How - how perfect she looks!" he whispered discreetly into the elf's ears, watching the artists practised strokes with an appreciative nod. After a while, he paced towards the open window, wild vine creeping over the window pane whilst Ceinwyn watching him as an astute huntress, rolled her eyes to Gwaithdûr. He will order them to be cut I daresay; destroy everything that is natural about this place of lifty halls and thin silk..Eldarion stared out over the gardens, the slender figure of Gwenneth apparent with a darker figure, lithe and tall. Ah so perhaps this is the fellow who will soften her heart he mused ruefully as Ceinwyn rose, moving to stand beside Feylon with a grin. " Ah master artist! It is coming along well! I only hope some of your genius can be passed on to me - wistful thinking is it not?" she teased whilst Eldarion's eyes seemed drawn to the lilting melody of her voice. Pity she is not as compliant as her fair colouring makes her appear..." My Lady" his firm voice punctured through the voices of Ceinwyn and Feylon. " I am come with a gift for the Princess - if she would but accept it" he smiled with a touch of anxiety evident as Ceinwyn's eyes flickered breifly to Feylon before her lips curved into a smile of practised force. Eldarion took from his pocket a finely wrought, delicate trinket from his pocket; glided with melted silver, the gem at its core was a deep blue.

" I thought it would complement your eyes" he noted, slipping it about her bare neck as Ceinwyn lifted her hair up. " It is truly beautiful my lord" she bowed her head. I am not used to such extravagance, she mused - what is it here that women do to deserve such? Don't they not the greatest gift is freedom? And so he wishes to adorn me with jewels to parade like a simple ninny at his side? Soften the blow so to speak." I thank you Lord Prince" she swept a courtsey as the jewel glimmered in the fading light. Eldarion caught the ripple of stiff indignancy flaring if only breifly within her poise, his own eyes narrowing with a stern impatience. Any other women would welcome such a gift! An heirloom of my house - surely giving a beautiful jewel for a beautiful women is a common blessing between all cultures? But the Prince as honest as his inentions were, ignored what must have been obvious. Ceinwyn craved only the right of choice , as simple as her birthright demanded. Arraying her with trinkets served only to inflame her sorrow at being treated as a possesion to a palpable grief. " Until tonight Lady Ceinwyn" he excused himself with formal bluntness, striding from the room without so much as a backward glance. Ceinwyn herself stood rooted to the spot for a moment, her thoughts clouding into a mute dizzyness until, was was common with the spirit of her people, she cursed bitterly, pacing the floor as restless as a caged beast." How am I to love a man such as he? He is a stranger to me, a perfect stranger and see how he treats me with such disdain? This Jewel means nothing. Nothing!" she scowled archly, raising a hand to her temple. " Oh this is such a mess - such a terrible mess" she sighed in bitter despair until, drawing herself straight, she strode quickly from the room, out into the lawns and crouched behind an oak, out of sight from everyone until the ball would dawn and the stage would be set.

"Ah, the elusive butterfly" Glyndr nodded a bow as he smiled, a wicked gleam in his eyes,"I am relieved that it was only duty that caused you to run from me", He pushed his hair behind stargem studded pointed ears , Kellquenti loved jewellery, and Glyndr was no exception. He wore many gems.
That was the first time any woman or elleth had run from me, I feared that it was something I had said or done, Felyon certainly thought so and told me in no uncertain terms," He smiled wider, "He thought I was behaving in an innappropriate manner".
He took her arm, "Let us walk a while if you have time", He noticed that she had curtsied to him , no female had done that before , He liked the idea!.
"The race, think on it," Glyndr said as he studied the bruised knuckles of his left hand. a legacy of the Gondorian brawl. "If you accept the challenge, then meet me at the stables at dawn, We shall race from the oak on the hill, accross the river, through the woodland to return to the oak, The winner's prize shal lbe a favour from the loser, Anything the winner desires". His usually cold eyes, warm with the excitement of the challenge. He stared into the crystal water,
"My father has many fountains" he said almost bitterly.,"Do they have fountains and gardens where you come from?"
The Elf frowned "I fear this cage that Felyon and I live in here".
His mood brightened,as he looked deep into her eyes, " At dawn if you wish it, and before perhaps ,a dance at the ball?".
Felyon was delighted at Ceinwyn's choice of gown, The hawthorn blossoms of may perfect,He was determined that this portrait portrayed Ceinwyn as she really was, A proud ,wild spirit, free ,and untamed, as the people, the race, she belonged to.
Eldarion had approved of his work, he was secretly pleased,
The Sylentor stopped, he stared, as Eldarion placed the necklace about her neck."No!" he thought ",one so free in spirit should not marry one who had no real soul",the thought worried him.
The ball.
Felyon felt this grand occasion would reveal much and determine the Gondorian Royal future, as well as perhaps his own and Glyndr's, He could not wait.till evening.

As she strolled with Glyndr, holding his arm, she felt the rosy flush on her cheeks. She told him softly,"I would have told you had your behavior been inappropriate, so of that you should have no concern. As to a cage, I am afraid I do not quite understand, for you are more free than I, and I do not consider myself caged, although my charge does, I fear."
She explained to him she didn't really remember much about her home, having left and travelled for a long time before Prince Eldarion had brought her to the palace in Gondor. Then she had stopped and looked at him, her emerald green eyes matching his in warmth, and she said," A dance, more than likely. The race, well, I guess you will find out at dawn." She smiled and slid her arm free, and bid him good day until the dance that night. She swept off down the path to the door, not once looking back, but knowing his eyes followed her.
*****************************
She glided through the halls, humming to herself. A favor from the loser, huh? Anything the winner desires...she smiled to herself. Well, unfortunately for Glyndr, there was no way that he could give her what she wanted so desperately. She would have to think of something else he could give her, for she intended to win.
She also needed to figure out how she was going to sneak out at dawn to meet him at the stables for the race. Her room was not far from that of the Prince, and if he was up at dawn, she might have a few problems getting out of the palace. He would not be inclined to let her go race against the Kellquenti captain, he would probably assume that the captain was up to no good, like he assumed of most men.
She thought back to the days just after she had arrived in Gondor. She had never spent a great deal of time around humans; rather, she had either been alone or in the company of elves. Being that she was new to Gondor, she had spent a lot of time getting to know the city, and attracting a lot of unwanted attention, from unscrupulous men who thought to usurp the prince's "prize", as they called her, right out of his hands. These were the same men who began to say she was more than mere servant to the Prince, after she had turned down their affections and pleas. Ever since the rumors had started, he had forbidden her from going anywhere off the property of the palace alone, and refused to even consider letting her go anywhere with a male by herself. She knew, then, that he would refuse to allow the Kellquenti captain and her to meet at the stable for the race. Especially since there were rumors and whispers about him, too. How he would charm a woman or elleth into giving what he wanted, and then cruelly break their hearts, more often than not.
She entered her quarters, and had not the time to shut the door while thinking aloud,"Well, to break my heart, he would have to have it first," and reaching for the door, brushed hands with the Prince, who had just arrived at her quarters.

Prince Eldarion felt his hand brushed by anothers as made to open the door of Gwenneth's compartments, sighing in earnest respite as he entered her quarters and slumping idly in in a studded leather chair. For a moment he shut his eyes, gritting his teeth against the hostile minutes of his earlier time spent with Ceinwyn. Indeed she is to be my wife and everytime we speak to each other it's with coldness!" You are a woman Gwenneth so tell me - what does a man have to do to please your species? I cannot understand it!" he cursed exasperatedly " I gave her the jewel and she recieved it with forced grace, not the warm response I was at all hoping for you understand" he noted ruefully, leaning forwards with his head resting on his hands. " I have tried, and will try, to make my peace with her but she is so - so...stubborn! So set in her ways that she cares not a little about the customs of my people! She is too wild I think for the coarse castle walls of Gondor" he mused dourly when flipping his wrists in a gesture of disillusioned confusion, he rose, pacing the floor much as Ceinwyn herself had done earlier. " The people will want to see her happy, to see her smiling at my side..do you think she will even have such decency to do that much for me? But then why should she" he scowled richly " she despises me and yet I mean her no harm! Would that she were a woman of Gondor!" he cursed irritably before setting an almost pleading stare on Gwenneth, he paused. " Do you think me so awful? If she spurns me infront of the whole court then they will think the rumours true; she is too fair for them to believe the fault lies with her" his voice seemed taunt, anxious as he moved to lean over his desk, pushing a few roles of parchment about absently. " Ah look one from my father - 'write of your bride..is she as beautiful as they say?...as spirited?'.." well" he scoffed with a touch of mirth " I think I could answer yes to that! Do you know" he sighed with a wistful grin " I think they sent her here to try me...I cannot think what else it could be for..." when pausing, he caught the flicker of something, something vague within her eyes, and the rosy blush settling on her cheeks. " Gwenneth" he prompted carefully, his voice stern as he moved closer." What have you been up to? Is it the rumours again? What is wrong?"

***

Ceinwyn herself sat crouched at the foot of the oak for the remainder of the afternoon, brooding on the venemous turn of fate which meant she was now bound to a man she wagered she could never seek common ground with. Oh what a happy marriage we shall have, she mused candidly, shaking her head as the first stars began to shower the vast expanse of deep indigo and truding back up to her chamber where Bella hastened to her languid form with fretful anxiety. " Miss we wondered where you had been all this time, away from your guards and betrothed - the ball is starting in an hour. Come, let me brush your hair again" she urged as Ceinwyn sighed, submitting to the gentle strokes being drawn down the honey gold tendrils and stopping where the woven flowers began. Straightening her gown and raising her head in obstinate pride, she awaited the trumpet call and in turn, her biggest challenge yet.
