Although she wasn't looking foward to finding out what her duties were, Rícellen smiled pleasantly. "I suppose I'll just have to make the best of this week then," she said.

She had cleaned her plate of food and sat back in her chair. A servant came and cleared the plate from the table after asking politely if she was still hungry.

"So, shall we head to the beach now?" she asked when she saw that Berior had finished as well.

"If you are ready, my dear." Berior escorted Rícellen to the courtyard where the horses stood waiting. Berior mounted his steed and led the way to the beach with Rícellen following him. But once they touched the sand, she flew past him. Grinning, he urged his horse to keep pace.

As the day went on, Berior began to grow warm until he could stand it no longer. He took off his outer tunic and dove into the salty waves. When he rose to the surface once more, he turned and looked at his wife standing on the shore. He slicked back his wet hair out of his eyes and called out, "Join me, the water is fine!"

Rícellen had quickly changed into her riding outfit before they left. She was suprised that Berior had not commented on it, her aunt had told her only to wear dresses, but she had snuck this outfit in anyway.

The cool beach air blew her hair wildly as she raced along the sandy shores and she laughed at Berior trying to keep up. When he stopped and jumped into the water, she reigned in her horse, but did not dismount.

"Join me, the water is fine!"

"You may find this hard to believe, but I've never swam before," she called out to him. Nevertheless, she got off her horse and kicked her heavy boots off as well.

The waves swelling and crashing on the shore startled her a bit and when she stepped foward the water engulfed her feet. She thought about turning back, Berior was a madman to venture into the ocean, but then she thought she would give it a try. She splashed, rather awkwardly, out a ways where the water was still shallow enough for her to stand.

"You may find this hard to believe, but I've never swam before," she called out to him.

When she carefully waded out nto the water, his heart jumped for joy. She was at least attempting to like the sea. He swam over to her and took her hand. "Here let me help you," he said. "If you want, I can teach you to swim."

With her hand in Berior's, Rícellen clumsily swam out farther, a smiled on her face. The waves were gentler this far out and she bravely dunked her head under the water for a moment, eyes clasped tightly shut. Popping back up and taking in a deep breath, she laughed.

"Alright, I think I'm ready to learn," she said. She barely realized that she still held his hand, it seemed somehow natural.

Berior was thrilled that she wanted to learn. Her hand was still in his, which was a good sign.

"Well, the first thing you should learn is how to float," he said. "Take a deep breath and lean back like you are lying down." He wrapped an arm around her to holdher steady. "You'll have to trust me. I won't let go until you think you got the hang of it," he told her gently.

Slowly, she leaned back, testing that his hand was still holding her up. She was most worried that he would let go and she would sink, but before long he held both hands before her face and she laughed because she had been floating without his help and hadn't even noticed.

"I trusted you," she said, as though to punish him, but she was laughing.

"I trusted you," she said, as though to punish him, but she was laughing.

"And did you sink?" he asked, grinning ear to ear. "I would never let that happen." He then swam farther out. "Now come to me," he said. "It's almost like floating on your stomach, but your head is above the water and your kicking your feet," he said as she awkwardly dog-paddled her way to him.

"This is more difficult than you make it look," she said, struggling to keep her head above the water while moving slowly foward. Her feet kicked up great splashes of water behind her and that gave her an idea. When she got to where Berior was, she splashing him playfully and dodged away out of his range as best as she could, giggling softly like a young girl.

Berior was delighted that his wife took to the sea so quickly. With some practice, she would be an excellent swimmer. Unfortunately for her, she made the fatal mistake of splashing the king of water sports.

With a laugh, he dove underwater and waited. He didn't wait too long; he didn't want to Rícellen to think he had drowned. Stealthily, he swam to her and tickled her feet. He heard her shreik before he came up and splashed her back. After a moment he said, "I hope I didn't frighten you too badly. Allie used to do the same thing to me when we were children. I think I overdid it though. I'm sorry."

"No need to apologize," Rícellen said. "Just know that you'll pay for that someday. I'm excellent at pulling pranks on people."
She smiled sweetly and then shivered as she realized how cold it was becoming. The slight breeze that blew over the waters was making her cold.
"I think I'm ready to head back to shore," she said.

He saw Rícellen shiver with cold. Wind blowing on wet skin always makes one cold. Once they feet were able to feel the sand beneath their feet, Berior sooped up Rícellen in his strong arms and carried her swiftly to her horse. "If we hurry, we can dry off and change before luncheon, and perhaps afterwards, we can go sailing, unless there is some other activity you would prefer," he said.

"Then let us hurry," Rícellen said, smiling. She gratefully accepted his help swimming back to shore and they led their horses back towards the house.

As soon as they returned, Berior lifted Rícellen off her horse and carried her into the bedroom. "You should change out of those wet clothes," he said as he grabbed a forest green tunic and brown leggings. "I'll be in the other room if you need me." He went into the adjoining room to change and give her privacy.

Berior sighed as he changed. He longed to be able to love Rícellen as his wife, but did not think she would permit it. He believed she was still wary of him, therefore she would not turn to him for love and companionship.

When he had finished, he knocked on the door. "May I come in Rícellen?" he asked.

When Berior left, Rícellen plopped down on the bed still in her wet clothes, her mind racing.
Is it alright to enjoy being with him? Father would like that, but I'm not sure.
She was lost in thought quickly and scarcely noticed the knock on the door until she heard a voice as well.

"May I come in Rícellen?"

"Just a minute!" she responded, and hurriedly changed from her wet riding outfit into a comfortable dress.
"Alright, come in," she called when she was finished.

Berior walked in and froze. Valar, she was gorgeous in that dress! He walked over and placed his hands on her sholders. "You look beautiful," he said, then removed his hands, embarrased. She'll probably hate me for that, he thought. "Shall we dine now?"

Rícellen could feel Berior's eyes on her. Somehow, the attention flattered her, even if she did not think she deserved it.

"Yes, let's eat then," she said, hoping to shove aside any awkwardness his actions had created.

They walked side by side to the dining room. In all those year's growing up, I never experienced anything like this before she thought. I was never an object of attractioin to boys, I was just a friend who could beat them at all their silly games.

A small smile crossed her face at the thought of all the boys back in her town who dared to challenge her to a horse race and left, red-faced at being beaten by a girl.

"What is you smile about?" Berior asked, curious as to what it might be. After they were seated (he made sure to sit near her) he began to quietly munch on his food and pondering if this could be the chance to help develop a relationship.

"I was just thinking," Rícellen said, although she could see that he was expecting more of an answer than this.

"Alright, I was thinking that no man has treated me kinder than you have," she blushed slightly and looked down at her food instead of at Berior.

Berior blushed as well at the compliment. "Well, I know this is hard for you. Valar knows what I would do if I had to leave my home and marry a perfect stranger. I guess it's somewhat easier for me since I am still in my home." He looked directly at her and took her hand in his two large ones. "From what I remember of my parent's marriage, it was a happy one before Naneth died. I want our marriage to be happy as well. And I hope that we'll be more than just two people living together. I hope that someday we'll be friends and companions."

Berior blushed again at what he just said. He let go of her hand and looked at his plate, embarassed that he had said so much.

After debating a moment in her mind, Rícellen scooted her chair closer to Berior's and took his hand in hers.

"If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I don't believe people should hide how they feel. If you want to hold my hand, please don't hesitate. The only way I will be more comfortable about this situation is if you stop acting uncomfortable yourself."

She paused and smiled. "And don't worry about me adjusting to things. I've always been the kind to jump headfirst into whatever I'm doing."

He kissed her cheek happily. "I'm relieved to hear you say that, my dear." He scooped her up in his arms and said, "Why don't we go somewhere where we can be alone? Say, my-our boat?" he offered.

Berior carried his wife all the way to the ship he made for her, and while exploring the bay, he also explored the joys of marriage. Some time after they set sail, the couple relaxed on the deck of the ship. "Well, my dear, what do you think of the sea?"

"It is so calm beneath the waves," Rícellen said. She had sprawled out on the deck and now sat staring at the water. She had pinned her hair up earlier, but it was falling out of it's bun. She pinned it up again as she spoke.

"There's something about it...it makes me feel like I'm insignificant to the world. Just one small speck all alone on a boat in the middle of a huge sea. Only I'm not one small speck alone. I've got you," she laughed, feeling strange to have said something almost poetic and so different from what she would normally say.

Berior chuckled to himself, joyful that his wife was falling in love with the sea. He was confident his marriage would not turn out like King Aldarion and Queen Erendis of the days of old. "They say that once a soul hears the call of the sea, they are forever bound to it. No matter where they go, their heart yearns to be near it again.," he said.

He looked at the setting sun. "The hour grows late. We should return home before it gets too dark." Berior turned to her with a smirk. "And perhaps we will get to know each other a little better. When we get back, I want you to tell me about your homeland, if that's alright with you."

Rícellen nodded and smiled. Before long, the boat was once again moored at the small dock. Berior held out his hand to help his wife step out of the boat. They walked to the house together, hand in hand.

It took Rícellen a bit longer to get dressed for dinner than it usually would. She took special care in choosing a dress, finally deciding on a light green one. She wondered if Berior would
like it.

Is this love? she thought, when she realized she was still thinking of Berior. Will I ever have another thought that is my own?

She wondered if she was betraying herself by loving her husband, but she shrugged off the weight of such thoughts and headed to the dining room. She was suprised to see that she was the first one there, aside from two servants who were standing against the wall.

Berior took a long time deciding which tunic best set off his shoulders. He was being vain, he knew it, but he wanted to look nice for Rícellen. He eventually decided on a forest green tunic with royal blue leggings.

He entered the dining hall and found Rícellen sitting patientlyat the table. "Forgive me, my dear," he apologized, "have you been waiting long?" She shook her head no, and ,relieved, he sat down beside her. "You look stunning in that dress." Then he discovered that they were wearing the same color and laughted. "I guess we are of the same mind."

Berior tried to consentrate on his food, but found he was extremely tired, and concentrating how beautiful his wife was. Finally, the meal ended and Berior ached to get to bed. He stood up and said, "Well, my dear, I'm fraid I'm utterly exhausted. I hope you'll forgive me for retiring early." As he went to leave, he leaned forward and planted a kiss on her cheek. "I love you," he whispered and disappeared into his bedroom.

Rícellen sat still for a moment, watching Berior leave. Her hand touched the spot where he had kissed her and his words echoed in her ears.

I love you.

The only other person who had ever said that to her was her father. It hurt her to realize that even though she hadn't been away from him for long, she was beginning to forget him. As her love for Berior grew, she had left behind her past.

She walked back to her room slowly, her eyes down, deep in thought. I never knew life could be so confusing!

"Lady Rícellen?"
She turned sharply at the noise to find a young servant girl there. She clutched a letter in her hand.
"Yes?"
"This message came for you earlier. I am sorry you did not get it right away. You were out on the sea when it arrived. Please forgive me," she held out the letter.
"It is not a problem," Rícellen said, taking the letter. The girl curtsied and hurried off.

Rícellen looked down at the letter. It was written on coarse paper and sealed with a circle of black wax. That's curious she thought. Who would use such a morbid color?

She sat down on the bed and lit the candle on the bedside table. By it's light, she read the letter. Tears filled her eyes and she threw the letter across the room, angered at the Valar or whoever had chosen such a fate for her.

Berior tried to wait for Rícellen to join him, but he soon drifted off to sleep. He awoke to hear bells ringing to say it was the second hour of morning. (A/N: I mean 2:00 A.M.) He was startled to find Rícellen no where near him. He leapt out of bed and went searching for her. He found her in the main hall staring into the fire, tears rolling down her face.

"Dearest, what is wrong?" he cried anxious to know what caused his wife's sorrow. He grabbed a large blanket and wrapped it around her. "It is cold at this hour. Here, come into the bedroom and tell what troubles you."

"No," Rícellen said curtly. She stood up and let the blanket slide off her back. "This is your fault. You made me leave him!"
She saw the confused look on her husband's face. Waving the tear-stained letter, she explained.

"My father died. I wasn't there to care for him, and he died!," she turned abruptly and stalked down the hallway towards her room.

Berior quickly read the offending letter before attending to his wife. He walked into the room without knocking and came up behind Rícellen's sobbing form. Gently, he placed his large hands on her shoulders.

"I know this is a great loss for you Rícellen. I lost my mother when I was young. I was devastated. I grieved, and I moved on. I knew she would not want me to grieve forever, and neither would your father." He wrapped his arms around her. "I'm here Rícellen. I want to help you. Grieve as long as you need to. I'll be right here beside you."

"I don't need you," Rícellen said, although her voice had lost it's edge. She did not pull away from him. Her tears dried up soon, and she sat staring at the wall, her eyes red and swollen. When she spoke again, her voice was scarcely above a whisper.

Despite Rícellen's weak protests, Berior did not leave her. Instead, he pulled her into a loving embrace and let her head rest against him.

"I would like to go back to Rohan for a few days. For his burial ceremony."

Berior blinked back his surprise. He never thought about that. "I'll make the arrangements as soon as possible." He said. "I'll let my father and everyone else know that I'll be gone for a few days to accompany you."

Ricellen stayed quiet, and they lay still for at least fifteen minutes.

"I didnt mean that it was your fault..." She said, shedding tears of grief about her father. "You couldnt have known that he would... Die." After tat last word, tears came faster again, and her whole body shook with sadness.
