Post Liberal or Conservative?
on: April 28, 2005 10:00
Okay, first off, this ISN'T a discussion thread. I'm just curious to find out if the people on this site tend to have more liberal or conservative beliefs. The people on this site are good at keeping the rules, let's keep this post open for curious minds, please don't post why, just post which you are. Thanks!

For me, I'm moderately conservative.

Me too, I think. I never was an extremist. I won't say why. Are you some sort of too-lazy-hobbit-to-read-everything?
Anyway, these are relative terms in my opinion... We may find ourselves too conservative in certain situations and too liberal in others...
Image Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong/ The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,/ And all the magic and might he brought/ Of Elvenesse into his words./ Softly in the gloom they heard the birds/ Singing afar in Nargothrond,/ The sighing of the Sea beyond,/ Beyond the western world, on sand,/ On sand of pearls in Elvenland.

What? If I'm interpreting that right (which I'm probably not), I think you're talking about how I said to just put which you are. It was just to make sure noone starts any arguments and get this thread closed.

Used to be uber liberal, but have gotten more conservative as I've aged. Depends on the issue, actually. Heh

They're both such broad terms (after all, the Liberal Party in Australia is regarded as conservative), but generally I'd consider myself liberal, with some social democratic tendencies.

[Edited on 29/4/2005 by Fíriel]

Now my views fall somewhere between social liberalism and social democratic.

Neither. I personally detest the use of such terms as it promotes mass non-thinking and party politics (ok that was a bit redundant).

I have beliefs that span into both sides.

I'm a fiscal conservative but a social liberal (low taxes - although efficiency in using the taxes actually levied is more important, pro gay marriage, pro gay adoption rights, anti guns, anti religion as a reason for conservatism, anti war).

I'm liberal. I think I have liberal views about pretty much everything. I'm never quite sure how to describe where I am on the whole political spectrum, but I usually go with liberarian socialist. But for the purposes of this I'd say liberal.
However, I live in the UK, so there are different issues here, and issues have different priorities.
I'm very ant-war, pro-environment, pro-immigration (does that even make sense?), pro-animal rights, pro-choice, and pro-gay rights. My sig probably gives away my opinion of Bush.
In the way of UK parties I'd say I'm having trouble deciding whether I support the Liberal Democrats or Greens more.

Goodness, I hate political parties for the same reason. I can't really say that the terms conservative and liberal tend to promote mass non-thinking on the same scale as parties, though.

Tree hugging liberal, pro gay marriage (went to one recently), pro abortion rights, pro environmentalism, all the way!

Not a pie in the sky though, I am pretty down to earth about stuff.

I'm definitely a liberal when it comes to ideological issues. (abortion, gay-rights, religion etc.)

When we're talking economical issues, I'm a social-democrat.

I think many people get confused because of all the contexts in which you can use the terms liberal and cosnervative. In economic policy, "liberal" means having few rules/regulations for corporations and often low taxes and all that.

The funny thing is that many politcal parties often are conservative in one way, and liberal the other way. A good example would be Bush, who's extremely conservative in religious and ideological matters, but liberal in economic issues.

Oh, BTW

http://www.politicalcompass.org

this is a a very good test. It focuses much on American issues, but it's a good test anyway if you want to determine you political point of standing.

my coordinates on the chart were:
Economic Left/Right: -7.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.92

The words have such different meanings in different contexts and parts of the world it's hard to tell if when some of us say "liberal" others think conservative.

Neither. I personally detest the use of such terms as it promotes mass non-thinking and party politics (ok that was a bit redundant).
I agree... when people ask me if I'm a Democrat or a Republican (same goes for the liberal/conservative question) I usually say I'm an independent or centrist. I try to stay away from party labels. I'm more of a slightly left-wing centrist with libertarian, socialist, and anarchist tendencies... it really depends on the issue.

I am incredibly liberal, but do not associate with either of the two major parties. I don't even completely go along with the Green party (not that they can manage to get enough votes for federal funding anyway.) I do however have high hopes that one day there will be more than two political parties in this country, and that there will be wider representation for the beliefs of all people.
