Lindarion nodded, knowing what his brother meant. He could hear what his brother indicated. A spider was fairly close. One for certain, but maybe more. The soft noise of the eight legs walking on a tree branch somewhere was now aggravatingly loud once he began listening specifically to it.

Without making any noise himself, Lindarion wrapped his fingers around his knife's hilt, as he continued to follow his brother forward. Both elves moved like shadows. If they could move on without being noticed, the better.

Suddenly the noise stopped. Lindarion stopped as well. he looked around, trying to locate it, for it seemed near now. Glaedon too had frozen. Then quite suddenly, a large grey body dropped down in front of them. Its many legs dangled from its grotesque form as it hung there for a second.

As it made a move to strike forward, Glaedon sliced through its thread that it hung from. The creature dropped to the ground, sprawling, then rising up wrathfully. Lindarion spun around and dispatched it with a sweep from his long knife. With a squeak of misery, the creature died.

Then, as if in vengence, several more spiders dropped from the trees. The brethren's guess that there had been more than one had been correct. Lindarion held ready his long knife, already its blade stained with spider's blood. He turned around so that he and Glaedon were back to back.

Glad his brother was quick-witted, and understood him immediately, Glaedon moved forward again. Slowly... cautiously... using every bit of elven stealth-training he'd received. Lindarion, too, was no more than a shadow passing through the trees.

Without making a sound, the older ellon unsheathed his sword, and then froze when the soft sound disappeared.
Then quite suddenly, a large grey body dropped down in front of them. Its many legs dangled from its grotesque form as it hung there for a second.

The creature's legs moved, grabbing hold of a tree-branch, and began propelling itself forward. In response, Glaedon immediately sliced through the thread, sending the spider unceremoniously to the ground. But, even as Lindarion slew it, Glaedon's eyes were back on the trees.

More! he fumed inwardly - though it wasan't completely unexpected, and stood back-to-back with his brother. "If you can't get to their heads... go for their front legs first!" he ordered, and lunged forward, ducking underneath the waving limbs, and stabbed upwards into the spider's belly. "Watch the stingers!" he cried - quite unnecessarily, of course, but Glaedon didn't care...

And then, a second spider joined the first he was fighting, and caught in mid-whirl, the ellon was half-knocked to the ground...

"If you can't get to their heads... go for their front legs first!"

Lindarion sheared of a pair of legs that reached toward him, then bringing the blow around, struck the spider's head. He continued to stay close to his brother so as to protect eachother's backs

The spiders came in swarms, then backing off and regrouping. It became as much fighting as guessing what they would do next. Since they had the advantage of the trees, one had to watch there as much as anywhere else.

Lindarion added yet another to the slain on the ground. He dodged an attack by another, cutting its thread. It dropped to the ground where he stilled it with a slashing blow.

Glaedon turned his half-fall into a roll, and with elven-speed was back on his feet. There was barely time to think, as he gritted his teeth, and sent the first spider backwards into the second. But... What are they doing? 'Sending' for reinforcements? he wondered, and fumed inwardly they had to keep one eye on the trees as the creatures swarmed around them.

Whirling, Glaedon's long, blond hair flared around him as he back-sliced into the nearest, not waiting to watch it crumpled onto the ground. So far, he and Lindarion had stayed fairly close to each other, and knew it had to stay that way. If the spiders got them separated, it could be even worse.

Threads, waving legs, and the flashes of his and his brother's weapons he put out of his mind, and concentrated hard on cutting the spider's numbers down...

As Lindarion slew another spider, he wondered how long they would have to fight like this. Even though they were elves, they couldn't do this forever. The spiders seemed to be in endless hordes and by fighting here, the brethren were not progressing to safer ground.

"Glaedon!" he said in a slightly raised voice from exhertion. "How long can we keep this up? Should we try to fight closer to where the guards of Mirkwood might help us?"

Glaedon spun again, his sharp blade severing a spider's head from it's body. He winced, though, at this brother's questions. Two... perhaps three days away from Thranduil's halls they were - not nearly close enough for help...

"We're too far!" he cried back, and then smiled grimly. He hated to, for the stench would be indescribable - but what was different about it than a chance lightning-strike? Besides, they were (thankfully) in a big enough clearing so that even the nearest branches wouldn't be affected...

"Pile them together and burn them!" Glaedon ordered, and nodded to one of the dead bodies. Fire he knew spiders hated as much as light - or they'd not live in a wood as dense as this one. "Do it, Lindarion!" he went on, "I'll cover for you! Once they scatter - we run!"

Lindarion hesitated, then dropped to his knees and began. It was distasteful work having to touch the filthy, oozing bodies of the dead spiders, but he tried not to think about it and piled them as his brother instructed.

He then got a flint from a pouch at his belt and attempted to make a spark. He ducked away as a spider struck at him, only to be slain by Glaedon's sword. It was difficult to concentrate in this enviroment. His first tries were repeatedly unsuccessful, but at last the dry leaves of the forest floor that he had gathered caught. From there, the flame spread to the hairy bodies of the spiders on which the leaves were piled and burnt well.

Lindarion stepped back, rather relieved that he had accomplish the task. Turning around as the blaze shot up, catching the pile entirely, he saw the spiders retreating, hiding their eyes with their forlegs.

"Run!" Glaedon called as soon as the spiders had scattered. Lindarion did. The two elves ran as elves can, Lindarion staying directly behind Glaedon.

Glaedon's whole concentration was set upon protecting his brother, while Lindarion attempted to get the spider-corpses set on fire.

A number of times, the horrid creatures came close to stinging him, but the elder of the two sibling's wouldn't give in. A wisp of smoke, and a stench worse than that of the spiders themselves filled the air when Lindarion was successful.

Nearly immediately, their attackers scuttled into the darkness of the trees surrounding the clearing. "Run!" Glaedon yelled, and without bothering to sheathe his sword, took off as fast as the forest denseness would allow - his brother right on his heels. The elf cared not that the twigs and branches reached out to snag his - and Lindarion's long hair... made rips in their tunics and leggings... and (once or twice) deep scratches on Glaedon's fair elven face.

After nearly an hour of running, the older ellon slowed, and gasping for breath, leaned against a tree. "Mae carnen, muindor dithen!*" Glaedon panted, and sank to the ground. "We daren't stay here long," he went on, "but here we rest - for a while..."

Lindarion dropped heavily to the ground inhaling and exhaling slowly in an attempt to keep his breathing regulated, but not very successfully.

"Mae carnen, muindor dithen!*" Glaedon panted, and sank to the ground. "We daren't stay here long," he went on, "but here we rest - for a while..."

Lindarion glanced up and smiled wearily. He had several scratches across his face, the most visable running across the bridge of his nose. He had twigs lodged in his hair, a thing which would have normally annoyed him, but he neglected to think of.

"We will continue to the Halls of Mirkwoods' elvenking?" Lindarion asked, at last catching his breath. He stayed as still as possible, both very tired and knowing that they would have to move again soon. They could not long linger in one place. He could run yet farther, he told himself, and he knew he could. The alternative was far worse.

"Yes," Glaedon replied, and leaned over to clean his sword on a patch of grass near to where he was sitting. "We've still got several days of this forest to get through, - so we do need to rest just a bit longer."

The older ellon closed his eyes, though every sense was 'stretched' and on alert. "If we're lucky, Lindarion... by morning after next, we just might run into some of King Thranduil's elves. I know he keeps patrols out - just to keep the orcs at bay..."

Glaedon fell silent then, but after a bare ten minutes, he stirred and got up. "Let's go, brother," he said, and reached down a hand to help Lindarion to his feet.

Lindarion got up with as much energy as he could pretend. He had tried to rest as mcuh a possible, but forced rest was never as good. Nonetheless, when no option given one must make due.

Lindarion followed his brother as they continued though not quite at such a strenuos pace as before. He was still alert to every sound even though he was tired. As silently as possible, the distances passed beneath their feet until Lindarion gave up trying to guess at them.

He wondered if they would stop for the night. To him that seemed dangerous. He was bitter about this detour, for it took time when he would rather be exherting himself in finding Alassieth, but surely them would not have come here. But no, all he could focs on right now, was taking the nex step and keeping on.

It was with great reluctance that Glaedon called a halt for the night. In the darkness of Mirkwood, only his elven time-sense that 'told' him that dusk was upon them.

"Wait, Lindarion!" he called, and stopping, the elder of the two brothers closed his eyes to listen - to let the scents of the area waft by them in what breeze reached below the tree-tops. Neither spiders nor orcs did he smell, and with a sigh of relief, Glaedon sank to the ground, and held his head.

Only a few moments did he allow himself to relax, though, and turned his eyes on the trees. "That one!" he said soberly, and nudged Lindarion. "We'll spend the night up there," Glaedon went on. "Tie yourself to the trunk while you sleep, though - and believe me - I'll be doing the same. Would you rather Watch first - or second?"

"We'll spend the night up there," Glaedon went on. "Tie yourself to the trunk while you sleep, though - and believe me - I'll be doing the same. Would you rather Watch first - or second?"

"I'll watch first," Lindarion said. They climbed the tree. The advice his brother gave him seemed strange, but Lindarion obeyed. He felt very uncomfortable tied to the tree. He was not one to like being restricted, but he tried to ignore the awful feeling of being captive in this dark wood. He keept his attention focused on his surroundings, thoroughly untrusting of the forest.

Fairly close, Glaedon had done the same thing. None of this was to Lindarion's liking, but he tried to make the best of it. He felt quite certain that he would not be able to sleep even when it was Glaedon's turn to watch. He also doubted that Glaedon would actually be able to sleep now.

Glaedon nodded, and secured himself to the tree he'd chosen. "I know it doesn't make sense, little brother," the ellon said, "but really - it does. We're both tired - more tired than we think. I know you don't want to sleep - or think you will. Neither do I. But, if we do get some rest - if we're tied to the trunk, we won't fall out."

The elf paused, and tried to shift into a more comfortable position - without much luck. "Both of us have our knives handy - so we can cut ourselves loose at a moment's notice. Now... I'm going to try to sleep - and I hope I can. Alassieth's going to need us alert, Lindarion, when we find her. Maybe that will help us both rest..."

Glaedon closed his eyes, and for all purposes, appeared to have immediately slipped into a deep slumber. But, in truth, it was quite some time before he actually did...

Lindarion still felt wide awake, which was just as well since he was on watch. He let his hand rest near his knife... just in case...

Glaedon gave all appearances of being asleep. Lindarion shrugged. Maybe his brother was capable of sleeping even in such an awkwardly positioned place.

Very carefully, Lindarion kept watch. He varied between watching the forest floor and the other tree tops. In this forest, it seemed that danger could appear anywhere.

Despite his wish not to, Glaedon (eventually) fell asleep... but it was only exhaustion overtaking his mind that it happened at all.

When Lindarion roused him to change Watches, the older ellon jerked awake. "I've got it then, little brother," Glaedon said quietly, and gripped the other's arm for a brief moment.

And then, settling into a less-uncomfortable position, Glaedon began scanning the trees and ground around them with keen eyes... almost 'daring' something to disturb the two of them...

Lindarion settled down to try to rest. He was very skeptical this would come to pass, but tried to be hopeful. As he was relaxing a little, a sudden rustle brought him full awake.

A black squirrel darts out across a limb of a neaby tree followed by another chasing it. The two squirrels disappeared into the darkness, aided by their camoflague, well suited for this forest.

Lindarion tried to return to somewhat of a calm, but the squirrels had awakened his senses more fully. Their little movement had seemed loud in the eerie, silent stillness of Mirkwood.

Glaedon's hand wavered over his sword-hilt when he heard the 'scrambling' noise... and then breathed a sigh of relief to find it was merely squirrels.

The long night hours seemed to drag by, until, at last, he sighed heavily.

"Come on, Lindarion," he said quietly, "Let's get moving. We can eat while we walk. - If we're lucky, we might run into some of the Elven-King's outer guards by nightfall.

That they were more likely to run into a band of orcs, however, the blond-haired ellon didn't say. But then, Glaedon didn't think he needed to...

Lindarion agreed. He cut the knot and climbed nimbly to the ground. Glad to at last have free movement of his limbs again, Lindarion stretched slightly after the long night.

"Come on, Lindarion," he said quietly, "Let's get moving. We can eat while we walk. - If we're lucky, we might run into some of the Elven-King's outer guards by nightfall.

They 'got moving'. Lindarion was glad to be one their way. Delay still irked himas it always had. He was far from forgetting their purpose out here. To find their sister.... if she was still alive.

Neither had Glaedon forgotten, and every step 'away' from Alassieth's kidnapper's path grated on the blond-haired ellon's heart.

The day went fairly quickly, though, until they were approaching nightfall. - And, suddenly, Glaedon stopped, listening intently. 'Something' was rustling in the darkness, and he tensed. The only question was... was it again spiders? Or orcs? - Or... what he truly hoped it was: guard-elves from King Thranduil's Realm...

Behind his brother, Lindarion stopped quickly. Glaedon motioned for him to listen and the younger elf set his sense of hearing against the forest's silence. When he listened carefully, he too could hear the noise that caught his brother's attention.

The same choices of possibilites ran through his mind, but at the sound grew a little nearer... it was too light for the tramp of orcs. Light as an elf might tread. Hopeful, but ready the brethren waited for the approachers to show themselves.

Then with almost friendly relief, they found elven bows taught and arrows nocked to their strings pointed at them. Glaedon and Lindarion lowered their own weapons and greeted the mirkwood elves. The bows were swiftly, though still suspiciously lowered as the brothers were recognized to be no threat.

Overwhelmingly relieved to see it was Mirkwood elves and not orcs, Glaedon lowered his sword. Giving them a slight bow, he introduced himself and his brother.

"Le suilannon,*" he said. "I am Glaedon, and this is my brother, Lindarion. We're from Lothlorien..."

"We know the colors," one of the ellyn coldly interrupted. "Why are you here?"

Knowing there was no 'love' lost between the two elven kingdoms, Glaedon nevertheless answered honestly. "Our sister was kidnapped - we were following them Northwards, and lost the trail in the rocks on the west of Mirkwood," he explained, "We were hoping..." and sighed, and shrugged sadly, "We were wondering if anyone here has seen or heard anything..."

*I greet you (i.e. 'hello')

The leader of this Mirkwood scouting party motioned for them to follow him, saying that it would be best for them to visit the elvenking's hall to learn such news from the other guards.

Lindarion nodded, not saying much. Being tired was finally catching up to him. He hoped that they would also be able to obtain some more supplies there, seeing as how they still would have much farther to journey even under the brightest news they might learn. It was inevitable that if the kidnappers had survived thus far, they would be well ahead of the brethren.

Glaedon, on the other hand - though just as tired as his brother, kept up a running conversation with the elven-scout leader. Mostly, he knew, to keep himself from keeling over with fatigue. It was bad enough that Lothlorien's Ruler and that of Mirkwood weren't 'friendly' at all... but to admit weakness before these nearly-antagonistic scouts was to make his home Realm seem 'lower' in their eyes.

But, what he discussed was not his sister, but the spider-attack of yesterday - and with which the scouts were quite interested.

"They become bolder, these spawn of Ungoliant!" someone quietly growled from behind Lindarion. "They do," the lead-scout nodded, and unbent just a little towards the clearly-tired Lothlorien elves. To traverse Mirkwood by the roads was a hardship, but...

By evening, they'd reached the immense caverns where lay the Elvenking's seat. "Wait here," the leader bid them, and showed Glaedon and Lindarion to a spacious, and cleverly-crafted room. Giving them a slight bow, he said he would return shortly, leaving the two brothers alone.

Turning to his next-younger sibling, Glaedon quietly asked Lindarion if he was doing all right...

"Yes, I'm fine," Lindarion nodded. He was tired, but that was no serious problem. He looked around at this underground hall. These Mirkwood elves seemed far different from those of Lorien. There was no denying, even if one wanted to, that their halls were ingeniously built, but Lindarion would have traded a good many of then to be back under Lorien's golden leaves with his brother and his sister.

He had noticed also that Mirkwood elves seemed very suspicious. He knew that his own people were cautious and wary of travelers, but these seemed even to excel them at this. They were both elves afterall. It was not as they were a pair of dwarves that had blundered their foolish way into a perilous forest. Lindarion hoped that they would be able to get some help here, for there was no enmity between the two elven realms, although there was no deep friendship.

Fortunately, the brothers didn't have to wait long, for Glaedon's impatience to get back to their Search was growing by the minute. Two guards appeared, and bid the two to follow them.

In moments, Glaedon and Lindarion were before the Elven-King, and the older of them recounting the events that had led to their presence in Mirkwood.

The Elven-King listened and seemed to be considering their story. Lindarion was impatient, but kept himself in check. Glaedon had finished and still there was silence. At last the king seemed to have thought it out to satisfy himself. He nodded to the two guards.

At Thranduil's nod, the two guards left Glaedon and his brother alone with the Elven-King of Mirkwood.

"What you have told me, is not news," he said soberly. "Only last month we rescued three ellith from their grasp," Thranduil went on.

"Do - do you know who they were?" Glaedon asked anxiously, and glanced at Lindarion. "No - only that they seem to be from the South," the King answered, and pulled on a bell-rope hanging next to his throne.

"See to it their supplies are refreshed!" he ordered the servant who responded, and turned back to the two Lothlorien elves. "Go with him," Thranduil said, "and I'll have guards show you the best way to leave. I wish you good luck in your Search."

With that Glaedon bowed, knowing the audience was concluded. And, soon, with a goodly amount of supplies - and full quivers, he and Lindarion left the Elven-King's Hall. "That way!" the elf-scout pointed them toward the North. "They've a 'habit' of going 'round' Mirkwood, so you just might be able to cut them off if you hurry."

"Thank you!" Glaedon answered, and though he and his brother were both still tired, they set off as quickly as they could...

((yep! ))

Lindarion felt better even after the short rest. And he was comforted by the newly full quivver. Shafts which he intended to put to use before long. The brethren wasted no time in starting when their direction had been pointed out, for both were in haste to continue the hunt.

Lindarion, though still tired, felt rested enough from their brief stop to be undetered. He was all for pressing on and ensuring that they covered as much distance as possible. Although they could not follow a trail at the moment, they hoped that they would be able to cut of those they pursued as the mirkwood guard had said. If the brothers caught them before they began making their way far south, the better.

Before long, Glaedon and Lindarion reached the northern border of Mirkwood. With keen eyes, the elder searched the ground.

After almost half-an-hour, Glaedon gave a crow of success. "Here!" he cried, and waved his brother closer. "This is it, Lindarion! - The same track! Let's go!" and took off heading eastward after Alassieth's kidnappers...

Lindarion's heart rose with the finding of the long lost trail. He could scarely account for every mile they had covered in their long trek so far. The hours they had walked and run, the leagues they had crossed. And now at least was an encouraging thing that they had not seen in too long.

"We are gaining on them again," Lindarion exclaimed joyfully for this small token of success. "Look! The trail has not been left long, it is mostly unmarked of the weather."

Again the brethren were off. Theirs was a lonely task. To run the endless miles after the hope of finding their sister.More miles passed underfoot as, encouraged, the continued with renewed resolution.

By nightfall, Glaedon and Lindarion had reached the Northeast 'corner' of Mirkwood, and pausing, the elder gazed off into the distance.

To the South, and although the Grey Mountains were behind them, Glaedon pointed to a single peak barely discernable in the gathering darkness. "Erebor!" he whispered to himself, and glanced at his brother. "The Lonely Mountain, Lindarion!" he pointed to it. I don't think they'd go there - but beyond it a little, is Lake Town. We can stop there and see if there's been any sign, but it'll be midday before we arrive."

Shaking his head, Glaedon met his younger sibling's eyes. "If you're not too tired, I'd just as soon keep going - at least until the moon sets. We can get a few hours of rest then, and keep going at first light."

Waiting for Lindarion's answer, Glaedon once again peered southward. They'd 'gained' a little on Alassieth's kidnappers, the only question in the ellon's mind was, how much?

Lindarion nodded. "I too would prefer to keep on," he answered. The shape of the Lonely Mountain loomed before them. It would be a great distance to cover to reach Lake-town. "If you think our journey would be further helped by visiting Lake Town, let us go on," Lindarion said. He was not sure whether it would be a delay or a help to visit the town of the Lake-men.

The younger brother was not tired enough to stop yet. Not when they seemed to be gaining. He was wary also of delays, but he trusted his elder brother to make the choice. It seemed so long ago now that he had tried to leave on his own and Glaedon had stopped him. Lindarion knew that he would not have gotten this far without his brother.

Moonset arrived, and passed, but after glance at his brother, Glaedon kept them going. They weren't tired enough - either of them to stop.

Perhaps, in Laketown, they would take a few hours - after they'd done their checking. - And, because he'd pressed them onwards, the two elves were nearly there when the first rays of light began peeking over the Eastern horizon.

Glinting off the rooftops, what had seemed so far away, was no longer. Encouraged, Glaedon gripped Lindarion's shoulder briefly. Since they'd slowed to a walk for a short while, the small breather had helped, too, the older ellon thought. Shouldering his bow, he nodded towards their next (albeit 'temporary') goal. "Let's go!" he called, and took off at a steady run...

((So sorry that I haven't been posting... I've been really busy with school.))

Lindarion followed again. He hadn't been talking much, nor even thinking that much, just keeping focused on the continual journey. Often running to not fall farther behind, resting as little as possible.

Now Laketown was in sight, Lindarion hoped that this would not have merely taken them out of their way, but that they would gain some helpful information from this town. Any news at all.
