“Of course,” she said, her lips twitching at his stammering (which she suddenly thought was adorable), “Something hot would be welcome—I’m hungry enough to eat five breakfasts!—and I’ve been wondering about your friend.”

Gareth chuckled at Nell's enthusiasm for 'five' breakfasts, but her welcoming smile had made his heart sing. He listened carefully to the young woman's chatter as they headed to the Galley. She seemed quite comfortable being on the Elanor V, now, he thought - and hoped (and wished) inwardly that he might have something to do with it. - But, Nell was also giving him information that was clear, and well thought-out, and he appreciated her observations...

Liking very much that Nell sat down beside him to eat, their breakfast was quite... 'companionable', Gareth thought, and he enjoyed it immensely. - And then, they went to check on Naden. - And, knowing how the Ranger enjoyed his meals, took him some of the cook's excellent food.
“I’m feeling better this morning-“ the ranger put in, accepting the breakfast gladly, “I hate being cooped up down here, Gareth- you have a lovely ship and comfortable cabins, but I’m sorely unused to being in a place this small for long bouts of time. Any chance that I could get some help up to the deck?” he ate while he spoke, proving that his appetite had returned in full- and he winced from time to time because of the ribs, but didn’t slow down eating. “I think I could walk mostly by myself- if I just have someone to lean on. I hate asking, you know- after I’ve already been nothing but trouble since Umbar—and I’m still sore from your mighty steering last night- but if I only see the sky through this little porthole for much longer, I’ll go mad.”

At that, Gareth grinned widely, thinking that if Dauron were to help, Nell could once again be at the Wheel. Quite pleased he'd been with how the young woman had handled his ship... it bore out what he'd heard of her sailing abilities. But before he could propose that idea - Nell did.
“Maybe it wouldn’t hurt for you to go topside and find a comfortable place to sit,” she put in, “I can go fetch Dauron to help- and I can take the wheel again.” She gave Gareth’s shoulder a squeeze.

Startled, the half-elven fisherman's cheeks tinged, and he followed Nell's exit with his eyes.
as soon as Nell had gone to inform the red-headed half-elf, Naden set aside the empty plate and raised an eyebrow at Gareth.
“Now, I’ve never been one to ‘understand’ women, Gareth,” he started, and grinned, “but I can pick up on a thing or two—have I missed so much away here in my hiding-hole?.”

At that, Gareth blushed, and stared at the floor. Clearing his throat, a soft smile was on his lips at just thinking of Nell, and he shrugged.

"I'm... not... well... um..." the Elanor's Captain stammered, unsure of what to say, and as his color deepened, fell silent. He knew how he felt... but whether Nell felt the same, Gareth didn't know... and was half-terrified of asking... in case it not be so.

Trying to change the subject (though he was still quite red), "I'm glad to see your injuries haven't dampened your appetite," the half-elf commented, and looked everywhere around the cabin - except at Naden... and then Nell and Dauron came back.
Avoiding Gareth's eyes, he looked over Naden from head to foot. "I understand you are tiring of your elegant quarters and wish to go aboveboard. Well, let's see if we can get you on your feet first."

In moments, Dauron had the Ranger out the door, leaving Gareth and Nell alone.

There was a long moment of silence, whilst the fisherman tried to calm his racing heart, as well as the deep color in his cheeks. "Who's on the Wheel?" he asked, dispising that his voice seemed... 'lame'. At her reply, Gareth nodded. "Shall... sh-shall we go topside?" he then inquired, and hesitantly, took Nell's hand in his to lead her up the corridor.

Yet, once they were on deck, he let go again, and went to stand by the seaward railing, and gazed out into the wide watery expanse of the sea that was so much a part of his life.

He wanted to talk to Nell... very much so... but nothing seemed to come into his mind. - Or, well, what he truly wanted to say, Gareth shied away from. But, "Look!" he then smiled, and pointed at the pod of dolphins keeping pace with the small ship's progress. "Beautiful - aren't they?" he asked, and as they discussed various stories about their 'escort', the half-elf began to relax a little... until, shyly, as they stood together, Gareth slowly moved his hand to let it rest on Nell's back.

He didn't quite put his arm all the way around her... he was too nervous for that - and besides, if she didn't want it there, it would be easier for Nell to move away. - Yet, with her beside him, Gareth felt a deep happiness and joy he'd never ever thought to experience... and gazing down into Nell's beautiful green and brown-flecked eyes, the half-elven fisherman couldn't help but give her a shy, and tender smile...

Nell hurried on to find Dauron and finally located him in the galley. She poked her head through the door and offered him a smile. He greeted her, then asked “Nell, how is Naden this morn?"

“He’s feeling better,” she replied, , and said a little about the brief meeting with the ranger, then “he’s wanting to come topside—the cabin has him feeling shut-in, I guess.”

Dauron was up and out in a few moments. Nell ran quickly to the deck to see who had the wheel, feeling slightly disappointed that she couldn’t take another chance at it now- then went behind Dauron to watch the progress with Naden.

--

Im... not... well... um..." the Elanor's Captain stammered, unsure of what to say, and as his color deepened, fell silent.

Naden was grinning quietly to himself as Gareth tried to change the subject- the ranger could gather enough without his friend telling him though- from his redness, his stammering and his refusal to meet his gaze.

Avoiding Gareth's eyes, he looked over Naden from head to foot. "I understand you are tiring of your elegant quarters and wish to go aboveboard. Well, let's see if we can get you on your feet first." Putting his arm under Naden's and wrapping around his waist, he supported Naden as the ranger found his footing. Slowly they began to move down the corridor until the reached the steps, which were closer to the shape of a ladder than a staircase. "Naden, this is going to be the toughest part but once we get above board, it should be smooth sailing....words I know you appreciate," he laughed. Amidst moans and groans, Dauron pulled the injured ranger to the top and out onto the deck. They stood still for a moment to give Naden a chance to catch his breath, and during this break, Dauron called out to one of the sailors.

Naden was relieved to find that- though it was uncomfortable, and he needed help- he could walk without many problems. Getting from below to the deck was the only part of the ‘trek’ that really hurt- but finally they got topside.

"Arrange seating for this gentlemen, sailor." When the man had set up some boxes and covered them with two blankets for cushioning, Dauron guided Naden and let him down gently into a sitting position. Squatting beside him, Dauron pointed out where the last Corsair ship had been seen and also showed Naden the pod of dolphins that had decided to run with the Elanor V. "See the babies on the other side of their mothers? The mothers always keep between the babies and any threat. And though the pod does not consider us a threat, they still follow traditional behavior." Dauron spent the next hour, sitting in the sunshine next to the land born ranger, pointing out and teaching Naden the things of the sea that both he and Gareth considered home. Given Naden's first experience with the ocean, it was a joy for Dauron to show the ranger the beauties of the water, and to see the fascination and interest in the eyes of Naden in return.

The ranger could definitely appreciate the ‘smooth’ sailing, and was grateful for Dauron’s company. He was glad to listen as the half-elf went on about different things- and without the sickening heaving of the ship during a storm, Naden was indeed aware of the beauty in all of it.

wanted to talk to Nell... very much so... but nothing seemed to come into his mind.

Nell felt her heart leap in the same way it had when he’d kissed her hand before, and she looked at him silently, meeting his shy smile with one of her own. Instead of shying away, she moved a little closer to him before turning her eyes back to the dolphins, wishing that she knew how to act or what to say to him. She was becoming more and more aware of how she felt for him and how much she wanted to feel his embrace- but she didn’t know anything about it, relationships or how to express such feelings. Her father had never spoken of it, except for the few times he’d said he wanted her to wed a good sailor- and her mother had not lived long enough to teach her.
So after a few moments of content silence had passed, she smiled at him again and gave his hip a playful bump with hers, reveling in the delights of being on a ship, having people to talk to, and – did she dare think it? – having found someone to love, whether he felt the same or not.

--

Dauron spoke for a long while and then hesitated for a moment, and a shadow crossed his face. These were the things he had so hoped to share with Calwyn....once....long ago, now it seemed. Sighing he watched Gareth, his hand on the small of Nell's back, sharing with her the same sights and, laughing suddenly, the shadow passed on. Poking Naden in the shoulder, and pointing in their direction, his eyes full of mirth, he chuckled. "Not a bad buy we made at that tavern, wouldn't you say?"

Naden was clearly aware of the pained expression on the red-head’s face as he observed Gareth and Nell, and he could guess where his thoughts were. The ranger was truly sorry that things had turned out the way they did with Calwyn- if anyone had ever been head-over-heels for a woman, it had to have been Dauron. And to discover- not only that the woman had been lying, but that she had meant to jeopardize them even unto bringing their deaths?—he couldn’t imagine the pain that the half-elf was feeling. It was gone from his expression as quickly as it had come, however, and his mirth returned.

“A fair one indeed,” Naden replied, smiling, “I must say that it’s a treat to see Gareth so befuddled, he who has seemed so sure of himself ‘til now. Thrown off at last by a mere girl!-- but she’s more, too, it seems. The whole affair has ended well enough- I just hope I can get to Thorongil with this information quick enough.” His voice lowered a bit. “Did I tell you, Dauron, that the corsairs have moved up their attack to one month’s time? That was why I got myself into trouble in the first place- heard that and decided I should hear more. I think that between being half-killed and getting drunk, though, I forgot to mention it to you and Gareth.”

Dauron laughed openly at Naden's comments regarding Nell's affect on Gareth. "I have never seen Gareth as anything less than self assured and competent. None of his competence is lost but his self assurance has flown by with the winds in the sails. One look or word from the sweet Nell and he is no longer 1000 or 2000 years old...I've forgotten his esteemed years...but a boy again, with his first love. It's fascinating to watch."

Then Naden asked, “Did I tell you, Dauron, that the corsairs have moved up their attack to one month’s time? That was why I got myself into trouble in the first place- heard that and decided I should hear more. I think that between being half-killed and getting drunk, though, I forgot to mention it to you and Gareth.”

"By the stars of the Valar, man, how could you have overlooked something so...so...important?" Dauron rose to his feet, leaning over so only Naden could hear him. "I will send Nell to you. Keep her occupied and out of Gareth's mind for a while. I will talk to him as we may have to change our course. Perhaps we can sail directly for the Anduin and upriver to Minas Tirith. Where is Thorongil basing himself these days?"

When Naden had responded, Dauron quickly walked to the side of the couple, who were standing close together, speaking quietly to each other, happiness shining in both their eyes. Dauron had a moment of regret and annoyance at the same time...regret for the loss of that same feeling as he had shared something similar with Calwyn...and annoyance that like he had been, Gareth was more engrossed in his new found love than in the reason they had gone to Umbar in the first place. Now he knew how aggravating he must have been to his friends when Cal.....never mind. This was not the time to dwell on matters long past. He had to shake Gareth loose from Nell and talk to him privately.

"Lovely day, isn't it? I do believe that pod of dolphins have adopted us as one of them," he said, smiling. "Oh, Nell, Naden has requested a cup of tea and something light to eat. Could you go to the galley and ask for a tray for him?" His eyes met Gareth's, serious and shadowed above his smiling lips. He was saying with them to Gareth as clearly as he could, 'don't question me now'.

When at last he had Gareth alone, the two of them stood at the rail side by side, facing the sea. "Naden has just informed me of a minor problem," Dauron said, sarcasm dripping in his speech. "It would seem that one of the things he discovered before he was dragged off and beaten to a pulp was that the Corsairs have moved the time of their attack to one month from now. He needs to warn Thorongil. I suggested that perhaps we could circumvent Tol Falas and sail upriver on the Anduin to Minas Tirith, without stopping at Dol Amroth or Tol Falas. What say you of that possibility?"

If Nell's answering smile and the way she moved closer to him didn't 'tell' Gareth what he so wanted to know... but when she playfully bumped him with her hip!!??

Startled, for just an instant, the half-elven fisherman looked down at Nell... and then, a wide grin of delight spread onto his face.

Ignoring the fact that Naden and Dauron were on the other side of the ship, Gareth's arm went around Nell... as near to hugging her as he could (at the moment) get. His sea-grey eyes twinkled, and leaning closer to her, he said softly, "Never, in all the centuries I've been sailing... have I ever known a more beautiful day at sea... and it's you who's made it so, Nell..."

Almost, the half-elf spoke his feelings, but then - to his intense irritation, Gareth then heard Dauron coming across the deck.

Swallowing his ire, Gareth nonetheless gave his old friend a hard look, and (noting the displeasure on her face as well) - knew Nell was rather unhappy, too. Yet, "Would you mind, Nell?" he asked, and with a deeply apologetic smile to her, watched the young woman head off to take care of the Ranger's request.

Turning to Dauron, "What do you want?" he inquired - more sharply than he intended.

Blinking in surprise, Gareth didn't miss his old friend's 'sarcasm' one small bit... and he understood it perfectly.

"Good thought, Dauron," the half-elf answered soberly, and glanced at the position of the sun above them. "We're going to take a big 'risk', too... and head straight for the Ethir Anduin instead of continuing to follow the coast. We'll have better wind and get there faster."

Turning, he reached Bernor at the Wheel in a few long strides, gave him the course change, and then 'tested' the feel of the wind on his cheeks, and it's direction. "Two reefs!" he snapped, and in moments the crew was scrambling up the shrouds. Unlike their escape from Umbar - this time the Elanor's Captain ordered it to get the fasted speed from his small ship...

By that time, Gareth saw that Nell was handing Naden his tea, and with a curt nod to Dauron to come along, he went to join the two. Putting his arm around the young woman - making it quite clear that she was fully a 'part' of all this, he spoke. "I've changed our course for Tolfalas," he stated, "We should be there by midnight by going straight across the Bay. But," and glancing at all three of them, "I'm not entering the Ethir Anduin until morning. - Even at high tide those shoals are dangerous, and I'm not going to run the Elanor aground."

Taking a deep breath, "I need to check my charts on it... of all my time asea," Gareth said soberly, "I've not ever sailed up the Anduin before..."

Pausing, he looked at Dauron. "You've sailed it, I know, old friend... can you take the Elanor up it for me?"

“I don’t know how I forgot it, Dauron- as I said, one thing drove out another- but Thorongil, as far as I know, is in Minas Tirith. There is a chance that he’d have a man waiting in Dol Amroth, but we can’t be sure of that.”

With that, Dauron quickly walked off.
- --

Ignoring the fact that Naden and Dauron were on the other side of the ship, Gareth's arm went around Nell... as near to hugging her as he could (at the moment) get. His sea-grey eyes twinkled, and leaning closer to her, he said softly, "Never, in all the centuries I've been sailing... have I ever known a more beautiful day at sea... and it's you who's made it so, Nell..."

Nell blushed again, unable to stop herself, but she was smiling broadly, her heart thumping to have Gareth so close, and soaring for him to be holding her so close.
“I don’t know what to say,” she replied slowly, and with that same grin, “except that this day is the most pleasant I’ve ever seen myself- and that sharing it with you, here on your ship, has been the main reason.”
As soon as she said it her blush deepened, of course, but that didn’t seem to dampen the moment at all. Their conversation turned to different things, and the young woman felt happier than she had in a long while-- but she could have guessed that it wouldn’t last…

Would you mind, Nell?" he asked, with a deeply apologetic smile to her.

Nell could see in Dauron’s face that he had something important to discuss, and she was irked to be sent away- she could guess well enough what it was about, and she felt that she had a right to know what was happening- but she went without argument, fetching Naden tea and a piece of bread- the only morsel the cook was willing to give her, mentioning something about the ranger’s monstrous appetite.

When she came back she found Naden looking just as displeased as she felt.
“Here you are,” she said, handing him the tea and the bite of bread. He gave her a nod of thanks, then cut his eyes toward where Dauron and Gareth were speaking. He was mostly annoyed with himself for not thinking of mentioning his news before, but also wondering what it would mean for the Elanor’s course.

This time Nell couldn’t draw the same joy at having Gareth’s arm around her- though, of course, it was very welcome- but something was obviously wrong. She could clearly pick up on the somber looks that the three men – or, one man and two half-elves- shared between each other.
“What’s happened?” she asked at last, “I can see your feathers are ruffled- why the sudden change in course?”

When Dauron had made his suggestion to Gareth, he was surprised at his ready response.

"Good thought, Dauron," the half-elf answered soberly, and glanced at the position of the sun above them. "We're going to take a big 'risk', too... and head straight for the Ethir Anduin instead of continuing to follow the coast. We'll have better wind and get there faster."

When he followed it with commands to his men, Dauron exhaled, not realizing he had been holding his breath. Their relationship had changed subtly since Nell had exposed her true self to them and Gareth sometimes seemed almost....jealous, and thus very touchy about everything Dauron said. Even his curt nod to Dauron to follow him to speak to Naden was unlike his former manner. When they reached Naden's side, Gareth immediately wrapped his arm around Nell's waist and began to speak.

Dauron met Naden's eyes as Gareth made it clear that Nell was not going to be left out of such tactical decisions and Dauron's eyebrow lifted briefly, shaking his head slightly.

Gareth paused, looking at Dauron. "You've sailed it, I know, old friend... can you take the Elanor up it for me?"

Dauron nodded, commenting, "Yes, I have sailed it many times. I do a lot of business upriver, more there than anywhere else. I know the shoals well, though the last storm will have filled in channels in some places and opened new ones in others. The sailors who regularly travel that route though tend to mark the open channels if one knows what to look for." He glanced at Nell who at that point was looking at all three men questioningly. He continued, "Your charts will be of little use, Gareth."

“What’s happened?” she asked at last, “I can see your feathers are ruffled- why the sudden change in course?”

Dauron glanced at Nell, then directly at Gareth, waiting for him to respond. The red haired sailor was not going to touch that question with a ten foot oar. This was not his mission, nor his ship. In a momentary flash of feeling, he suddenly found himself seriously missing his trusty ship and wishing himself back on its familiar boards.

"I'm quite aware of that!" Gareth snapped, "but I'm going to look at them anyway - if only for an idea of what to expect!" immediately disliking himself for his 'tone' towards his old friend.
“What’s happened?” she asked at last, “I can see your feathers are ruffled- why the sudden change in course?”

Dauron glanced at Nell, then directly at Gareth, waiting for him to respond.

Meeting Dauron's gaze unwaverinlgy for a long moment, the half-elven fisherman turned to Nell... loosening his grip around her waist just a little. "Naden's found out more than what you overheard in the 'Black Anchor'," he explained, and by his words, Gareth 'reminded' both the Ranger and his friend that Nell... as 'Niel'... already knew a great deal about their mission. "They're moving more quickly than all of us had thought. We're taking the information where it needs to go - directly - instead of taking it through Dol Amroth."

Pausing, and feeling that the tension was growing, Gareth forebore to 'remind' Dauron of something else: Nell was a sailor too. She'd have quickly noticed the course change anyway - even if she had been below when the orders had been given. Everyone in the crew would have!

But, and wishing that the 'strain' wasn't showing in his soft voice when he spoke to the young woman again... and (because he did not yet know Nell as well as he wanted to) desperately hoping she would not take 'offense' at his words, Gareth then took Nell's hands in his. Gazing into her beautiful eyes honestly, "I need to speak with Dauron... but afterwards, may I meet you in the Bow?" and with a shy smile, lifted her hands to his lips, and kissed them both.

He was not trying to get Nell 'out of the way'... not in the least! But he did need to speak to his old friend - privately - and the sooner the better. Gareth knew they had to resolve this tension between them - if they could - and fast. The Elanor V was too small a vessel for this to continue... and a 'pleading' look that begged Nell's understanding was in the half-elf's sea-grey eyes.

Upon receiving her response, Gareth called Allon to keep Naden company, and solemnly turned back to Dauron. "Will you come with me to my quarters?" he asked hesitantly... and then led the way below.

Where, almost immediately, Gareth sank onto his bunk - leaving his desk-chair for his very best friend, and started in. "I don't know what it is, Dauron," he said sadly, "but we're too close for whatever it is to be causing us to be this way. If it's my fault - I apologize. I need you - I need your expertise! - Even more importantly - I need your friendship! Can we work this out?"

(( Hope this is okay... dd, bereth, if I need to edit anything, please just let me know!! gwen))

“I’ll go and wait for you,” Nell replied, smiling as he kissed her hands. She offered a nod and a smaller smile to both Dauron and Naden before turning and making her way to the bow. She could sense the tension on the Elanor well. It hovered like a thick fog, and she guessed that she was part of its cause- for that she felt regretful, wondering if she should have waited to reveal herself- although she knew she wouldn’t do it differently, if given the chance. Sighing, she leaned on the railing and looked out ahead, allowing her thoughts to wander as the sea breeze swept over her. She thought of home and wondered how much it had changed. She had had a few friends in Dol Amroth, but she didn’t doubt it would be awkward to see them again. How much had changed in her absence? How would people react to her return?
It would be a long time yet before she’d come there and have to deal with those questions, though- they were set for Minas Tirith now. Presently her thoughts found their way to Gareth and she smiled to herself, feeling a light flutter in her chest at the mere thought of him. Everything still almost felt unreal- her being away from Toban and his filthy tavern, being on a ship once more and having friends, and especially having the Captain. Why did he want to meet with her, though? What did he have to say? The young woman decided not to dwell on that either. Sighing, she closed her eyes and simply enjoyed the moment.

Naden, too, could catch the tension between Dauron and Gareth, but he said nothing of it, nodding in agreement with the captain’s decisions. Then he was left alone with Allon. Sighing, he sipped at his tea and glanced up at the man.
“I’ll be fine by myself, Allon, if you have something else you need to see to,” he said with a half-grin, “I know that I’m not the most exciting company to keep.”

(OOC: This is a joint post between Gwendeth and me)

"Will you come with me to my quarters?" he asked hesitantly... and then led the way below.

Where, almost immediately, Gareth sank onto his bunk - leaving his desk-chair for his very best friend, and started in. "I don't know what it is, Dauron," he said sadly, "but we're too close for whatever it is to be causing us to be this way. If it's my fault - I apologize. I need you - I need your expertise! - Even more importantly - I need your friendship! Can we work this out?"

Dauron walked to the chair but didn't sit. Instead he stood next to the desk, staring out the porthole behind it. "You don't know what it is? Are you seriously telling me you don't know what it is?" he asked. Turning suddenly, looking directly at Gareth, he spit out, "One word.....Nell!"

Gareth blinked in surprise, and then frowned. "Nell? How?" he inquired.

"Gareth, ever since she admitted who she was and you saw her as the female she is, you have been impossible to talk to. My question is why? I haven't changed." He dropped into the chair and sighed. "I think...I feel...that...that you may be afraid, well, ..." He couldn't figure out exactly how to say what he thought without hurting his friend. Staring at Gareth for a moment, he finally just blurted it out.

"I'm not interested in her, my friend. Not at all. Oh, yes, she's a sweet child but not my cup of tea. Actually, no woman is right now," his eyes lowered and he stared at the floor for a long moment, as an image of Calwyn flashed through his mind. When his eyes met Gareth's again, he smiled.

"I am happy for you, Gareth, do you not know that? I am so pleased to see the two of you together as there is obviously deep feelings on both sides. Yes, I said both sides. I have also watched the fair Nell when she thinks you are not looking. She feels the same way you do, old friend. I could not wish for more for either of you." Then his familiar grin appeared on his face.

"Besides, I have never seen you make a fool of yourself over a woman before and I am finding it highly amusing."

Gareth stayed silent thoughout his old friend's speech, and by the end of it, he was quite red. Yet, with a deep sigh of relief, he nodded. "'Afraid' might not be the right word, Dauron. 'Jealous' is more like it. So many times I've watched you flirting so easily... and the way you kept looking at Nell... and after - " The half-elven fisherman paused, not mentioning Calwyn's name. "I've seen women fall head over heels for you, Dauron... and, perhaps I was afraid - afraid Nell would want you - and not me. Besides... I've not 'said' anything to her - yet," and he colored again - for that's what he was 'planning' to say to her... later.

Dauron chuckled at the thoughts of his old friend. "Want me? Are you totally blind, man? The woman idolizes the ground you walk on...well, the deck boards more aptly. She is as smitten as you, Gareth, and not with me, but with you. What are you waiting for? Go find her...now! Tell her what your heart feels and I guarantee you..you will not be disappointed in her response."

A shy smile tugged on the edge of Gareth's mouth, and then, he chuckled, too. "Just make sure you don't run my ship aground you redheaded youngling!" Gareth teased, and ducking past his taller friend, the half-elven fisherman ran out the door.

Dauron stretched out his long legs and remained where he was sitting as Gareth 'finally' took a suggestion from him as freely as he once used to do. And he smiled, thinking it was probably the most important piece of advice he had ever given his old friend. His memories of Gareth went back to his earliest thoughts, when he had been barely a toddler. Related distantly through his mother, he had grown up idolizing Gareth himself, much as Nell now did (though in an entirely different way, he laughed to himself).

Suddenly, Gareth's last words registered in his mind. The wheel of the ship!! He jumped to his feet and raced up to the deck, his eyes searching for Gareth and Nell as he made his way to the wheel, taking it over from Bernor, and sending his mate off for his afternoon meal. His eyes met Naden's, who nodded at him as though he knew what had transpired below deck, and Dauron grinned in happiness. His hands on the wheel, he stared ahead, looking forward to the future with more interest than he had in many days.

Gareth burst onto the upper deck of the Elanor V, and came to an abrupt halt. Naden... Allon... and catching sight of Bernor at the Wheel, were all staring at him in surprise. Half-gasping from taking the steps two-at-a-time, the half-elven fisherman flushed. Nervously clearing his throat, Gareth turned on his heel, and made his way forward. Yet, he paused at the top of the front steps leading to the bow to just spend a long moment looking at Nell.

She was leaning on the railing... the fresh breeze that drove Gareth's ship onward ruffling her hair... and her attitude was that of simple enjoyment to be at sea.

The idea that Nell loved the same wide, watery expanses that he did made the Elanor's Captain both calmer - and... more nervous. Why was it that love made one feel so... so... and Gareth couldn't put his finger on it, but it did. Words he'd been 'rehearsing' fled his mind, but knowing if he didn't speak now, Dauron would never let him hear the end of it... and encouraged by his old friend's words, Gareth took a deep breath.

He was quiet as he went up the few stairs, and then Gareth Silverlake stopped again a few feet behind the only woman who had ever captured his heart.

And, that same heart was pounding madly when the half-elf found his tongue. "Nell?" he said her name softly, hoping not to make her jump too badly at finding him there.

She turned, and smiling, Gareth slowly stretched his hand out towards her... taking it into a gentle grasp, and coming closer by a few steps, gazed down into Nell's beautiful green eyes... noticing how the brown flecks within them brought such 'life' to them.

"I never thought..." Gareth began, and then, trying again, "I didn't think... that - that... ever in my life..."

Hating that he couldn't seem to put a coherent sentence together, and unbeknownst to himself, Gareth's grasp on Nell's hand had tighened just a bit... and with his other, he brushed away the short, wind-blown locks back from Nell's face. Tenderly tracing the line of her face with his fingers, the half-elven fisherman said the only thing he truly wanted to say.

"I love you, Nell!" Gareth said softly, and slowly leaned closer. "I love you!" he repeated, shyly kissed her lips, and anxiously searched the young woman's eyes as he waited for what Nell would say...

Naden was enjoying sitting in silence by himself when he was aware of Dauron back at the wheel, and when he met the half-elf’s gaze he gave a nod, trusting that his friends had worked out whatever problem had been growing between them. Then he just closed his eyes and attempted to rest, trying not to think about corsairs or messages or anything disheartening.

--

Nell was so involved in what she was doing- which was nothing, but listening to the sounds of sailing and relishing the familiar feel of the ship moving forward- that she didn’t hear Gareth approach, and really had no idea he was there until he softly spoke her name. She turned and faced him, smiling in response to his smile as he came closer. When he slowly took her hand her heart skipped a beat, but she met his gaze steadily, wondering if her nervousness showed- but she couldn’t guess that her eyes already reflected what she was truly feeling, beneath her anxiety and the questions swimming around in her mind…

"I never thought..." Gareth began, and then, trying again, "I didn't think... that - that... ever in my life...”
Hating that he couldn't seem to put a coherent sentence together, and unbeknownst to himself, Gareth's grasp on Nell's hand had tighened just a bit... and with his other, he brushed away the short, wind-blown locks back from Nell's face. Tenderly tracing the line of her face with his fingers..

She felt her heartbeat quicken at his touch, but it was so gentle and reassuring… just having him near was reassuring- his very presence made her feel safe and unafraid, filled her with a joy she could hardly explain…

"I love you, Nell!" Gareth said softly, and slowly leaned closer. "I love you!" he repeated, shyly kissed her lips, and anxiously searched the young woman's eyes as he waited for what Nell would say...

As he kissed her she felt that the rest of the world dropped away- the sea, the ship, the sky were gone- and that she was soaring without a care- but it was over quickly, and he was looking at her again- anxiously, as if waiting for a response. Nell, though, felt breathless and surprised, but full of joy and happy, happy as she never thought she could be. She could find no words to express what she felt, nor could she even find her voice, so she simply smiled and eased her arms over his shoulders. Wordlessly she drew him down into another kiss- this one deeper than the last- and when she pulled away her cheeks were burning, but the smile was still in place. He was so wonderful- in every way she could imagine- and how wonderful to know that he loved her… there were still questions, and ponderings… but they all seemed to melt away as she looked up into his handsome face.
“Oh, I love you too,” she said softly at last, then buried her face against his shoulder, resting against him and wanting nothing more for the moment than to be in his warm embrace, standing there in the bow of his beautiful ship, under the gentle caress of the sea-wind with Gareth’s strong arms about her.

she simply smiled and eased her arms over his shoulders. Wordlessly she drew him down into another kiss- this one deeper than the last-

Despite what Dauron had said, Gareth was almost unbelieving... until Nell kissed him.

His arms went around her, holding Nell close.

and when she pulled away her cheeks were burning, but the smile was still in place... she looked up into his handsome face.
“Oh, I love you too,” she said softly at last, then buried her face against his shoulder, resting against him

A wide smile of joy spread on Gareth's face, and with a deep sigh, he tightened his embrace - just a little, and rested his cheek on the top of Nell's head.

For a while, they stood so... Gareth trying to comprehend how wonderful it felt to just be holding Nell... for her to be holding him... and to know for himself that she loved him, too... no matter that his old friend had assured him she did.

But, at length, the half-elven fisherman loosened his hold slightly, and moved Nell in his arms a little so he could gently tip up her chin and once more gaze into her eyes. Words flitted through his mind, but he could speak none of them, and just leaned down to kiss her again. Long, and tender, and deep, and then Gareth held her again, stroking Nell's hair with his fingers... amazed at how soft it was.

Uncaring of how long they were there, the aromas of the evening meal being cooked began to waft it's way towards the two... mixing with the smell of the fresh sea-air. With a gentle chuckle, and a rueful twist of his lips as hunger made it's presence known, Gareth sighed once more, and again looked down at Nell.

"Join me for dinner?" he teased, and grinned when Nell did... since Gareth was quite sure they'd not be very far apart from each other from now on. And then, he added drily, "We'll have to 'face' the others sooner or later, anyway... it might was well be now."

When Nell agreed, and though Gareth took time to give her another loving kiss, they slowly headed back down to the main deck... the half-elven fisherman's fingers entwined with hers.

When he and Nell stopped nearby to Dauron and Naden, they discovered that every member of the Elanor V's crew was on deck. They were grinning widely, or chuckling, and a few were outright applauding their Captain, and his new love.

At that, Gareth put his arms around Nell again, and smiling widely too, tried to hide his very red face in her hair... the young woman's very nearly the same color as the fishermans. And, just knowing that Dauron (if not Naden, too) would have something to say to them both Gareth waited for the 'storm' to break...

Bernor finished his meal quickly and hurried back to the wheel, in time to see Gareth step up behind Nell and the rest of their meeting. Grinning, he glanced at Dauron. "Well well, what have we here?" He nudged Dauron in the side, saying, "She turns from a boy to a girl and immediately captures the uncapturable Captain Silverlake. Now that's a feat of some doing."

"Bernor, be nice now. Gareth is very much in love and fortunately for him, HIS lady loves him in return." Bernor looked closely at his own Captain and felt ashamed for reminding him of his own recent loss of love. "Sorry, sir, you are absolutely right. Actually, I am happy for the Captain. He's a good man and has deserved this kind of happiness for far too long." Nudging Dauron again, he pointed to the wheel. "Let me take over for you, sir. Naden looks like he could use someone to talk to." Dauron smiled, bowing to Bernor, and saying, "It's all yours, my friend. But I have to give you the same warning Gareth gave me....don't run us aground." He left the wheel, taking a last look at Gareth and Nell, and headed for Gareth's cabin where he pulled a group of chart rolls down off their shelf, unrolling a few until he found the one he wanted. Putting the rest back, he tucked the one under his arm and went topside. Throwing himself down on the deck, he stretched his long legs out and propped his back against a storage crate, next to Naden.

"Naden, we can allow the two lovers but another day's time but then we will come into waters that will require his personal care." Unrolling the chart, he bent over pointing out the channels that probably no longer existed since the storm. "Here....and here....I know from past experience these two channels will have shoaled over. We might have to take this route," pointing to another spot on the chart. They spent the afternoon going over the chart and discussing how they would find Thorongil when they finally landed near Minas Tirith. As the sun began it's nightly fall into the west, the aroma of the chef's creations began wafting across the deck. Dauron and Naden had been lost in their own business but Dauron looked up at the increase in footsteps around them to see the members of Gareth's crew surrounding them, all facing Gareth's and Nell's approach across the deck.

When all the crew began to applaud, Dauron burst out laughing. Clapping Naden on the shoulder, he said, "Now that's what I would call approval, wouldn't you?" Helping Naden to his feet, he offered to assist him to the galley. "From the odors wafting this way from the galley, it would appear our cook is already aware of this event and is preparing a suitable meal for the occasion. Let us go and enjoy it."

When they all reached the galley, it was no surprise that Nell and Gareth sat side by side, leaning into one another frequently sharing quiet remarks...so quiet that Dauron finally felt it was time to make them aware that there were others in the room. Standing, he banged his pewter mug on the table until he had everyone's attention.

"My friends, I think it is time to raise a glass in honor of our Captain, who managed to make our escape from the Corsairs possible, who rescued an abused boy from a tavern in Umbar and turned her into a lovely woman and then managed to fall in love with her. Quite a feat, as Bernor here said." He nodded to the happy couple and lifted his mug. "To Gareth and Nell, may they have all our blessings and a happy life." He stopped at saying 'together' though he wished to but Gareth had made no announcement as yet and he did not wish to presume. It did not matter, however, as all in the galley, stood, raised their mugs and drank to their Captain and his lady, cheering as they finished their drink.

When Dauron clapped Naden on the shoulder he winced and cut a one-eyed glance in the half-elf’s direction, but was quickly grinning as he was helped to his feet. He could clearly see that both Gareth and Nell were blushing deeply, but he only laughed to himself.

Nell was overjoyed, but extremely unused to being in the spotlight. She grinned and attempted to hide behind Gareth, only to have him hiding his face in her hair.
“Are they always this friendly?” she said as they went down to the galley. The young woman sat close to the Elanor’s Captain, focusing only on him and her plate. Others came down, but she didn’t pay them much attention. As she ate she constantly leaned over to Gareth to make some remark, most of the time commenting on something to do with the ship, but throwing in the occasional ‘I love you’ and smiling, still not really knowing what to say or do- but at least now she was comfortable, and her redness had faded.

"To Gareth and Nell, may they have all our blessings and a happy life."

Nell was torn between being absolutely horrified and positively delighted, but raised her mug to toast Gareth. Her blush returned as the others in the galley stood up and started cheering- and to keep from actually crawling under the table she sipped at the mug and kept her eyes on Gareth, grinning over the cup’s rim.

Naden, by this time, was enjoying himself immensely, always in the mood for ale. With the joyful atmosphere in the galley it was hard to believe the danger they had been in only the day before. Since he had cleaned his plate quickly he was now humming an old song to himself and tapping one finger on the table, having deciding that he wouldn’t risk starting a song- his singing voice left a lot to be desired, and he didn’t want to take any of the embarrassment away from Gareth.

“Are they always this friendly?” she said as they went down to the galley.

"Um..." still rather red, Gareth shrugged, and grinned, at sat down as close to Nell as he could whilst they ate.

Howel, the ship's cook, had - indeed - 'outdone' himself with what he'd prepared for the evening meal. - And it, and the very clear feelings of his crew towards himself and Nell meant a very great deal.

Yet, it was to her Gareth gave his attention... barely aware that anyone else was even inside the Galley at all. They kept leaning close, exchanging quiet comments... on the Elanor, mostly, but often, it was just near-whispered 'I love yous' that were traded... and when Dauron rose to bang his mug on the table, Gareth jumped in surprise.
"To Gareth and Nell, may they have all our blessings and a happy life."

As deeply red as he'd ever been in his life, the half-elven fisherman sent his old friend a look that - quite clearly - 'told' Dauron that if they'd been topside, Gareth would have tipped is best friend overboard without a second thought.

Very much, he'd have liked to turn the 'toast-table' back on his glib-tongued best friend, but could think of nothing to say that wouldn't send a stab of regret over Calwyn through Dauron's heart - so he didn't. So, with a smile touching his lips to see Nell peeking over her mug at him, Gareth leaned closer once again and kissed her cheek. And then, with a mild growl, mumbled his thanks to them all.

After that, everyone began drifting away to tend to their own duties... relaxations, or (for some) rest.

For himself, Gareth rose, and taking Nell's hand in his, "I think," he grinned, "I could use some time at the Wheel of my little ship. Care to help me?" he asked, and once on deck, he chased Bernor away to get some dinner.

Standing together, both Gareth and his new love then took control of the Elanor V... each with a hand on the Wheel, and their arms around each other's waists.

Happier than he ever thought possible, Gareth sighed deeply... the feel of his ship, and Nell beside him slowly bringing a much-needed calm to the half-elven captain... and - since they were mostly 'alone', it was often, he leaned down and gave the young woman a tender kiss... or just smiled into Nell's beautiful eyes.

After an hour or so, with the stars shining in all their glory, Gareth called another of his crew to take over, and slowly walked Nell back to her cabin. With her in his arms, the half-elf spoke.

"Sleep well, love," he said softly, and after unhurriedly kissing Nell good night, Gareth waited until the young woman had closed the door behind her. With the same deep sigh he'd given so many times this evening, the half-elven fisherman headed for his own cabin, and a deep, peaceful slumber such as he'd not had in some few nights...

~@~@~@~@~

Morning found Gareth enjoying his first cup of tea in the Galley when Nell came in. A blushing smile, and a loving good-morning kiss they shared - along with breakfast.

But, if Dauron (especially) had 'expected' that his friend had abandoned all thoughts of their mission, Gareth swiftly disabused everyone of that notion. After the morning meal was finished, he requested his old friend to bring out the charts for the Ethir Anduin and that great river. And, with Nell still by his side, listened carefully to what Dauron and Naden had discussed the afternoon before, adding his own comments and suggestions into the mix for getting themselves to (firstly) the port at Osgiliath, and (secondly) to Minas Tirith.

"Truly," he sighed aloud, when they'd finished, "I've never wanted to sail the river. - Landward places haven't held my interest... and, as wide and long as the Anduin is, I prefer the 'openness' of the sea. I've never seen the White City. - I've not been land-side any farther than the Hills of Tarnost, and that when I was a child. Dauron's told me some about it... but what of you, Naden? What have you to share about it? - Anything?"

The rest of the day was spent in quiet enjoyment of just being at sea with his new beloved... and as he'd predicted, by full dark, they were rounding the island of TolFalas.

They anchored well-away from the ever-changing shoals, and after the next morning's meal, Gareth - holding Nell's hand tightly in his own, addressed his very best friend.

"All right, Dauron," he said, "The Elanor's under your Watch... take us up the Anduin!"

Glancing anxiously at both Nell and Naden, to the latter, he asked, "Do you think we'll be getting you there with enough time for Thorongil to alter whatever his plans are?"

After the Ranger had answered, Gareth walked apart with Nell a little way... switching his gaze from her, to his old friend, and then back again, he winked broadly so she'd know he was teasing. Especially since there were few other sailors he'd trust with piloting the Elanor V at all - much less in their current situation.

"You know, love," he said 'conversationally', but so everyone could hear him. "If Dauron runs us aground, I've only got myself to blame... since I'm the one who taught him to sail. I've never heard any... 'complaints' from the Flying Gull's crew... but it will be 'interesting' to see what kind of Captain that red-haired youngster really is - don't you?"

(( Okay... moving us 'forward' a bit... hope you two don't mind! ))

Wheel, and their arms around each other's waists.

"Sleep well, love," he said softly, and unhurriedly kissed Nell good night.

After she had said goodnight and closed the door, it was all Nell could do to keep from squealing like a giddy little girl. It was all very new and exciting to her, so much happening so quickly that she figured her luck had to have changed, as the captain had said- She was free of the miserable existence that had been her life for two years-she was on a marvelous ship… having friends… being in love- Gareth’s kisses and caresses… She had heard stories as a child of men and women falling in love instantly- she had never expected it to happen to her!-and there was no knowing if it would last (although right then it felt like it most certainly would)- but she didn’t care… sighing happily, the young woman made ready for bed and was swiftly asleep.

--

Nell found Gareth in the galley the next morning, and was delighted to share a kiss with him before breakfast. Naden was managing to get around pretty well- although still with some aid from Dauron- and showed up not long after. He had decidedly had too much to drink the night before, and was suffering with a terrible headache because of it. The breakfast, however, quickly turned his sour mood around.

What have you to share about it? - Anything?"

“It’s a grand place,” Naden replied, “and beautiful, but I wouldn’t want to live there. Walls of stone don’t suit me.”
The ranger went on to share a little of the city’s history, until everyone left to see to their duties. He made his way topside again, bothering Dauron whenever he got the chance. Nell remained close to Gareth throughout the day, just thrilled to be near him. That night before she went to bed they shared another tender kiss.

“I hope so,” was his sighed answer, “I know where he’ll be waiting, if he’s in Minas Tirith at all- and if our luck holds out, he’ll have the time he needs.”

Nell grinned and leaned against him. “If you taught him, then maybe we won’t take any ‘wrong turns’ or run aground-. But anything’s possible with that one- so yes, I’d say it should be interesting indeed....heh, the youngster.”
She laughed a little, thinking that they were both far older than she- and she threw a smile in Dauron’s direction. Her mood was one of happiness- and she felt that nothing could ruin it.

Dauron, Gareth and Naden spent the day talking over tactics, charts and the whereabouts of Thorongil. They all slept with their own thoughts that night, not the least Dauron himself. He lay in his bunk, his arms stretched back under his head, and thought of the mission they had almost completed short of the sail up the Anduin, the tribulations they had gone through to accomplish said mission but mostly Gareth and Nell. Although he couldn't be happier for his friend, his heart remained a tad envious of this particular outcome of their journey. Thinking of Calwyn for the first time in days, he realized that he had thought that the journey would end in the same way for him. What went wrong? How had he been so fooled? He sighed and eventually drifted off to sleep.

He met Naden struggling toward the galley in the morning and walked with him, noting that both Gareth and Nell were already snuggling and munching their morning meal at the same time. Dauron smiled and ordered something for himself. When breakfast was completed, the all went topside. They had anchored south of the entrance to the Anduin and Dauron went to the side of the ship, his eyes searching the varying shades of water and the flow of the currents to try and determine how badly the storm had changed the river channels. As he surveyed the channel markers left by the regular users of the river, he heard Gareth's voice...trying to hide a touch of humor.

Dauron turned, mockingly glaring at Gareth, then burst into laughter. "A better one than you when it comes to river, my old friend. I think I'm ready to move now." He began giving orders to the crew and took the wheel from Bernor, ordering him to get to the pulpit to watch for the markers. Slowly the ship's sails filled with wind and they moved forward, Bernor calling out the markers as they became visible. The had been anchored in a small bite and so it wasn't until they cleared the point that they hit open water again. Bernor was laying on his stomach on the pulpit, looking down on the markers. Dauron was at the wheel, watching, concentrating and listening for Bernor's calls, so it wasn't until the 2nd call came from Allon that what Gareth's first mate was saying registered in Dauron's mind.

"Sir! Captain! There's a bow just showing beyond the point behind the trees. I think it's a Corsair ship, sir."

All the men onboard, including Gareth, Naden, Nell and Dauron, looked beyond the starboard, eyeing the prow of the ship that was closing in on a pattern destined to cross their bow and block them from the river. Dauron knew the draft of the Corsair would never make it through the channels of the estuary so it was a matter of getting into those channels before they did.

"Bernor, I'm opening all the sails, we are going full speed ahead. Keep your eyes open. We cannot afford a single error." He began yelling orders and the men ran to their positions. "Gareth, if you've ever trusted me before, trust me now. It's the channels or we're sunk."

Dauron turned, mockingly glaring at Gareth, then burst into laughter. "A better one than you when it comes to river, my old friend. I think I'm ready to move now."

"So you are, Dauron!" Gareth laughed, but then sobered as his friend began calling orders... often nodding to himself. And, even if it didn't matter that he was not behind the Wheel, Gareth paid close attention... one *always* needed to learn more...
"Sir! Captain! There's a bow just showing beyond the point behind the trees. I think it's a Corsair ship, sir."

Whirling around, Gareth let go of Nell's hand, and raced to the Starboard railing, straining with his half-elven sight to be sure.

"It is!" he exclaimed, and swore aloud, trying to gauge his ship's speed against that of their enemy.
"Bernor, I'm opening all the sails, we are going full speed ahead. Keep your eyes open. We cannot afford a single error." He began yelling orders and the men ran to their positions. "Gareth, if you've ever trusted me before, trust me now. It's the channels or we're sunk."

"Of course I do!" the Elanor's owner-captain answered, the strain showing in his voice.

However good Dauron was, though, Gareth was going to do everything he could to make his friend's task easier.

Striding back across the deck, "Nell!" he called, and as she came to meet him, "Go tell Howel to douse the Galley-fire, would you? - Have him wake anyone below who's asleep and tell them to go through the cargo holds - anything we don't need - I want thrown overboard!"

As she started to dash off, however, Gareth caught the young woman's arm. "I love you!" and though his smile was grim, and determined, he felt she'd understand, and gave her a quick kiss. "And, on your way back - fetch my sword - and yours... and tell the others too - if we don't 'beat' them - they're not getting the Elanor without a fight!" and then sent his beloved on her way.

After another anxious glance to Starboard, Gareth surprised many by leaping into the shrouds and nimbly climbing up the ropes to help with getting the sails set as quickly as possible...

"Sir! Captain! There's a bow just showing beyond the point behind the trees. I think it's a Corsair ship, sir."

Nell turned at once to look, and as she heard Gareth's exclimation she cursed softly, anxiety gripping her at once. To be caught in the last leg of the journey! As she watched she thought worriedly, We're not going to make it- we're not going to make it!- - and found herself wondering how well the men of this crew could fight, trying to fathom how closely they could miss the corsair vessel, and wondering if her new-found luck would hold out long enough to get them to Minas Tirith.

"Nell!" he called, and as she came to meet him, "Go tell Howel to douse the Galley-fire, would you? - Have him wake anyone below who's asleep and tell them to go through the cargo holds - anything we don't need - I want thrown overboard!"

As she started to dash off, however, Gareth caught the young woman's arm. "I love you!" and though his smile was grim, and determined, he felt she'd understand, and gave her a quick kiss. "And, on your way back - fetch my sword - and yours... and tell the others too - if we don't 'beat' them - they're not getting the Elanor without a fight!" and then sent his beloved on her way.

Nell went off at once, going as fast as she could and delivering the messege to Howel, who quickly moved into action. The young woman then went about fetching swords- the put her own at her hip and gathered up Gareth's, Dauron's, and Naden's- even though she secretly thought he wasn't much able to do any fighting- and hurried back topside, seeing Gareth in the shrouds as she passed off Naden's sword to him, then hurried up to the wheel to deliver Dauron's. She stayed there and glanced at the other ship again, her heart beginning to pound. Visions played in her mind's eye, terrible memories of another vessel, its deck littered with the bodies of men she had loved as a family, their blood spilled needlessly and ruthlessly. She recalled her father's death....
Sighing and turning away, Nell brought herself back to the present. Her expression was dark, but resolute; she would *not* see the same fate befall this ship and these men- and most certainly not Gareth, or Dauron. Sighing, she moved to wait for the Captain to come down and claim his sword.

Naden had been sitting again, but he got to his feet after Nell gave him his weapon, swearing inwardly. No, he didn't feel up to a fight- and he hoped that he could trust Dauron's sailing and the Elanor V to save him from having to use the sword- but he didn't intend on waiting to see, or going and hiding below. Standing, he gripped the sword and watched silently, feeling the tension nearly tingling in the air around him.

Dauron was aware of where everyone was and what they were doing but his eyes were scanning the sea in front of him, listening to Bernor's calls with a concentration and focus unyielding. "There's a marker on the starboard side, sir!" Bernor called out. Dauron turned the wheel to port slightly and the ship scraped lightly along the shoal that had formed but slid into the channel neatly. Between the two of them, they had been weaving from left to right in small moves, following the slim channels that now existed in the estuaries. Dauron glanced to his left to pinpoint where the Corsair was now. He noted that it was closing in on them quickly and would only take a few more minutes before it crossed his bow. Furthermore, they were still in deeper water than the ElanorV.

Nell arrived at his side, his sword and belt in her hand. Smiling down at her small form, he lifted his arms and nodded at her to tie it on, as he unwilling and unable to take a second from the wheel.

Howel and the night crew had arrived on the deck and out of the corner of his eye he noted them tossing crates and kegs overboard. The more that went off into the sea, the lighter the little ship became and Dauron found the manuevering easier with every minute.

"Bernor, quickly, tell me, where is the next marker?" He needed one or two more to clear his way and if he took the right one, he could run the Corsair aground.

"Sir, it's just ahead...starboard again." Dauron smiled. Just what he wanted...another quick turn to port would put them in the main channel but better still, would put a huge shoal between them and the Corsair.

"Gareth!," Dauron yelled. "Have your men hang on. I'm going to make a sharp turn." Holding the wheel tightly in his hands, his shoulders stiff from the strain, he waited for the call from Bernor.

"Captain, NOW! Turn her now!"

Dauron spun the wheel, tipping the ship almost on it's side as he pulled it into the deep channel, scraping the keel on the bit of shoal remaining on his starboard side. The ship glided away at full speed and he looked over his shoulder at the oncoming Corsair vessel. He heard, as well as saw, the Corsairs grind over the sandy bottom, slamming to a stop as they became grounded. Several of the Corsair sailors that had been close to the edge went sailing over the bow of the ship, landing in the water, where they were actually able to stand on the shoal only chest deep. They stood staring at the Elanor V as she sailed away up the river, then back at their own ship as it sat on the sand, slightly tilted and obviously going nowhere.

The crew began to cheer and let out his breath in a sharp exhale. He twisted his shoulders, trying to loosen the muscles and called out to Bernor. "Good work, Bernor. An extra mug of ale to you, if the crew hasn't tossed all of it overboard, that is." Then Dauron called up to Gareth. "Captain, you can come down from your hiding place now. The bad men can't catch you now," he said, laughing at his tease of his friend. His relief was overwhelming and he was in a mood to celebrate.

He watched the water before him for a moment, then yelled out to the crew. "An extra mug of ale to all of you!! You did a great job, men!"

After getting the sails set, Gareth stayed where he was. The vantage point aloft was better than that below, for one thing... and for another, he could (and did) direct his crew in making small adjustments to the sails to aid Dauron's control of his ship.

Seeing Nell standing by his friend with his sword in hand, he sent her a brief smile. If it came to it... he'd be on deck in moments to retrieve it, he knew, and then Gareth turned his attention once more on the Corsair.

"Gareth!," Dauron yelled. "Have your men hang on. I'm going to make a sharp turn." Holding the wheel tightly in his hands, his shoulders stiff from the strain, he waited for the call from Bernor.

"Hold on!" Gareth cried, and took a firmer grasp on the mainmast, and though one or two of his men lost their footing when the Elanor heeled sharply, no one fell.

As the crew began to cheer, with great relief and thankfulness, Gareth began to shinny down the ropes.

Half-way down when Dauron called him... and though he was well aware his old friend was merely teasing... between the relief they were safe, and the agony of having someone else (albeit more capable than himself in this particular situation) in control of his beloved vessel, what went through the half-elven fisherman was a surge of fury.

"'Hiding place'??" Gareth snapped as he leapt to the deck and angrily strode to the Wheel. Sending Dauron an icy glare that was not 'teasing' in the least, he put an arm around Nell - knowing he needed her near. It wasn't often the half-elven fisherman lost his temper in this manner... and the times it did, he always regretted it afterwards... but his old friend's comment had hurt Gareth to the core.

And, sweeping the maindeck of the Elanor V with a brow as black as night, Gareth shook his head and looked down at Nell for a long moment before turning back to Dauron. "You did more than well on this, Dauron - and don't get me wrong! I'm more grateful than you can understand for getting us past the Corsair... But," Gareth paused, and taking his sword from Nell, handed it roughly to his friend. "Don't tease me like that after what we've just gone through, 'old friend'!" he said furiously. "Enjoy your 'celebration'! I'll be in the bow - call me if there's anything I can do on my own ship!" he snarled sarcastically.

Gazing again at the young woman by his side with sea-grey eyes that blinked rapidly from the roiling emotions that caused them to mist, Gareth's voice became softer... if still showing the strain of these past harrowing minutes. "Will you come with me, Nell?" he asked anxiously, just wanting to be alone... and alone with her for a good long time...

(( um... Gareth's just a tad upset at the moment, but he'll get over it and be apologizing rather soon, I think. ))

Dauron's mouth dropped open in shock as he watched his oldest friend and his newly found lover stalk away from him. He had just saved the man's bloody ship from sure disaster and this was the thanks he got? Glancing at Bernor, who simply spread his hands out to his side, palms up, and shrugged his shoulders, Dauron called him over to take the wheel. He'd have called on Allon to do so but could not spot him in the midst of the crew, all of whom's eyes refused to meet his as he looked at them. Instead, the crew seemed busy with whatever was on the floor of the deck. He did spot Naden, but could not make out what the expression in his eyes meant.

"Well, I'll be cursed," Dauron muttered to himself as he tied his belt and sword to his waist. Turning to look back at the Corsair foundering on the shoal, he strode off towards the hatch, and then down to his cabin, where he slammed the door behind him after entering the room. Throwing himself on his bunk, he stared at the ceiling. What in damnation had gotten into Gareth, he wondered...other than Nell, of course. He had not seen a temper flare like that in Gareth since the time he had painted naughty words on the sails of Gareth's ship years ago, that went unnoticed until they were unfurled. He chuckled at the memory of how furious Gareth had been with him and how the half-elf Captain had made him work for hours with cans of turpentine and old rags washing each and every sail clean. But he had been a boy then and had deserved the fury, as what he had done was pure mischief. But this...now....at such a time...it was unworthy of Gareth.

His mind went back over the past number of days, replaying the events as they occurred. The flare of pain as he recalled what Calwyn had done to his love for her caught in his chest like a hammer blow. It made him wonder if Gareth would ever know such pain. Granted, he had obviously confessed his love to Nell, and she 'seemed' to return it but what if she was just a young woman who had been in peril and was feeling more gratitude than love? His heart went out to Gareth, understanding his new feelings and what he must be thinking along the same lines....or would be if he had any sense, but what sense was there ever in the art of love? He did know, however, how he would have felt if Calwyn had not betrayed them all and had been along with them through this journey. He would have chopped off anyone's head who had threatened her at the time. Gareth must certainly feel the same way at the threats that had been placed on Nell .

And Dauron also began to think of how his teasing Gareth's 'manhood' would have made the half-elf feel, especially in front of his newly found love. How embarrassing it must have been for him, Dauron thought. Had it been just the two of them and the crew, Gareth probably would have given Dauron a light punch in the gut and then laughed himself. But in front of Nell? Dauron got up off the bunk in a rush....he suddenly wanted very much to apologize to Gareth, assuming he could pry him away from Nell long enough to do so, he chuckled. He headed for topside.

Turning his back on his best friend, and with Nell's hand in his, Gareth half-pulled his new love along with him as he went forward. Following her up the short ladder to the bow, the half-elven fisherman paused.

Shaking with fury that was swiftly turning to remorse, Gareth flushed deeply in embarrassment, and gazed sadly into Nell's eyes... trying to discern what lay behind them. So new were these feelings of love - to both of them - and so little they knew of each other yet! Wondering what she thought of his dispicable display of temper, and hoping he'd not 'ruined' things between them, Gareth hesitantly touched Nell's cheek, and then swept her into a tight hug.

"I'm so sorry, Nell!" he whispered, but knew very well it was Dauron he really needed to apologize to. "Truly," he went on, looking at her again, and gently took the young woman's face in his hands, "this isn't like me, love!" Gareth added solemnly... agonizing, and hoping she'd believe him... and wondering also just what had come over him these past few minutes.

After a short time of quiet talk, and a long, tender kiss in which Gareth tried to further his apology to her, the Elanor's Captain saw a flash of red from the corner of his eye.

Keeping his arm around Nell, Gareth looked up, and coloring deeply, saw Dauron's head at the top of the steps.

Before his friend could speak however, the half-elven fisherman started in. "Dauron, please - forgive me," Gareth said, and shook his head at himself. "I shouldn't have said those things to you. - I haven't any idea why I did that - and you didn't deserve it. - Not after saving my ship just now..." and meeting his best friend's eyes straightly, Gareth waited for whatever Dauron might have to say...

"Will you come with me, Nell?" he asked anxiously, just wanting to be alone... and alone with her for a good long time...

Nell had been too relieved for words when they’d managed to miss the corsair ship, and had been cheering along with the rest of the crew- but her smile had vanished when Gareth came down out of the ropes with his harsh reaction to Dauron’s teasing. She could plainly see the look of disbelief and hurt on the red-head’s face- but she went with Gareth wordlessly, looking at him questioningly as he practically pulled her along with him. Everything that she had seen of him ‘til now had not even hinted that he could lose his temper over simple jokes. She could understand being annoyed, but snapping in such a way… and to the one he claimed was his best friend…? She climbed the ladder leading to the bow, wondering if she was the cause. Of course everyone was tense- they had just missed a brush with what most likely would have proven a disaster- but that didn’t ease her discomfort.

“I know…” she responded, wishing once again that she was better with words. “You’ve nothing to apologize to me for…” she stopped and took his hand, hoping that she wasn’t ‘overstepping’- “He was just teasing. I can tell that Dauron is the joking type- I’ve seen him smiling or laughing more often than not since our first meeting-…” she trailed off, quickly changing the subject to something more comfortable- the course of the ship, the length of time before they’d reach the city, and things of that nature- nothing really personal was brought up. Nell was all too aware that she and Gareth still didn’t know each other well at all- a fact which had just been made painfully clear- and as much as she knew she loved him and wanted no secrets kept from him, she felt uncomfortable saying much about herself or her life, and she didn’t know what to ask of him- so though they stood close and smiled lovingly, the words were more ‘business’ like. Until, that is, they neared the end of the conversation- and she whispered a soft ‘ I love you’, and returned his kiss, hoping that he understood she forgave him everything, and needed no apology at all.

When she became aware of Dauron standing near she blushed as well, wondering how long he’d been there. But she smiled softly to herself when Gareth apologized, an inner voice confirming that she’d known he would all along. She slipped out of his grasp with a squeeze to his arm and a smile, then turned. She offered Dauron a smile too, before saying, “I’m going to make sure nothing fell over in my cabin- and anywhere else- when we turned.”

With that Nell headed below, doing as she had said she would- a few random things seemed out of place, but nothing had broken or been damaged that she saw. Afterwards she went to her own cabin and plopped on the bed, dwelling on the growing belief- in her own mind- that she was causing trouble for Gareth’s friendship with Dauron, which was something that she most certainly did NOT want to do.

Throughout the entire escapade Naden had been silent, reeling from the sharp turn and in no mood for cheering. His brow furrowed at Gareth’s actions but he chose not to get involved- he knew they’d work it out sooner or later- though the reason for the half-elf’s ‘out-burst’ he couldn’t guess. With the threat past, for now at least, the ranger sat himself down again, closing his eyes and making himself rest. He wanted to be able to take part in whatever plans Thorongil made when he received their news…

Dauron reached the deck and as his eyes searched for Gareth, he heard his voice behind him.

Before Dauron could say a word, he thought, no, this is wrong. It was he who had come to apologize. As he opened his mouth to speak, Nell interrupted, a small smile on her face for Dauron.

“I’m going to make sure nothing fell over in my cabin- and anywhere else- when we turned.” She left their side and headed off as she had suggested. Dauron watched her, thinking that his respect for the lady had increased ten-fold. Turning back to Gareth, he looked directly into the half-elf's eyes.

"No, Gareth. It is not you who should be apologizing, 'tis I who foisted upon you a jest that was neither amusing nor timely. I've had time to think and realized that the pressures and perils of the past few days have placed a heavy burden on you. It was not the time for my childish humor, particularly when I realized that the greatest of your fears concerned Nell. I thought about Calwyn, and knew that, given the same situation as you and Nell, I would have slain anyone who breathed unkindly in her direction." He smiled sadly, "I know how much you were concerned for her, as well as your ship and your crew. I would have been the same. Thus, my mocking your fears was ill-timed." He grabbed Gareth's arm and threw his other arm over Gareth's shoulder. "My heart felt apologies, my friend, if I may still be allowed to call you that." His eyes held Gareth's questioningly.

She slipped out of his grasp with a squeeze to his arm and a smile, then turned. She offered Dauron a smile too, before saying, “I’m going to make sure nothing fell over in my cabin- and anywhere else- when we turned.”

More relieved than he could express that his new love seemed to understand, and had forgiven him, Gareth returned Nell's smile, and watched until she had disappeared from sight.

If Gareth had felt embarrassed before... it only increased ten-fold when Dauron offered his own apology.

Yet... his old friend was right. Worry for his ship had become 'secondary'... and the half-elven fisherman recognized it now. - For, now having found her, there was no way that Gareth would have allowed Nell to be taken back to Umbar! Not, he knew, unless he was dead in the defense of her...

"If you don't call me 'friend', mellon nín," Gareth growled, and punched Dauron in the ribs with his free arm, "I'll throw you overboard... right now!!" and there was a wide grin on the half-elf's face.

Extracating himself then, Gareth leaned against the rail beside his best friend, and sighed. "You're right, though, Dauron. Nell is... well..." and a tender smile touched his lips. "And... I feel bad for you, too... you don't know how sorry I am that Calwyn hurt you so. But... Nell isn't the 'whole' reason I got angry, my friend. It's more..." and the Elanor's Captain considered his next words for a long moment.

"It's... well, you know me, Dauron," Gareth said. "Even when I hired a captain for the Elanor a few years ago, I've never stayed land-bound while my ship was 'out'... and more than half the time, I'm helping haul nets with the rest of my crew. I'm not one for 'idleness'... and with this," and he gestured first at the Anduin, and then at the foundering Corsair behind them in the distance, "I can't do anything but sit and 'watch'. So," and the half-elven fisherman reddened again, "unless it had come down to a fight, right now I feel 'useless', and 'unneeded' on my own boards."

Deciding that - when they returned to Dol Amroth that he would free (with a generous severance) that afore-mentioned captain to find other work, Gareth smiled ruefully at his friend. Giving the red-haired Captain of the Flying Gull a playful shove, "Come on, Dauron... I'll 'treat' you to a glass of wine... and don't think I don't know you 'found' my special hiding-place!" he teased, and dragged his best friend down to his own cabin to do so.

After toasting Dauron's prowess as a sailor, and a bit more teasing talk that was much in the vein of their usual habits, Gareth grinned, and with a laugh, sent his red-haired friend away to "Just you take good care of my ship!" he ordered. Then, he took another bottle from his 'supply' and two clean glasses.

Heading down the corridor, he paused, and lightly tapped on Nell's door. When she opened it, Gareth smiled. "Care to join me?" he inquired, and, with a slight tinge to his cheeks, "Since my ship's in the best of care, I thought we could spend some time getting to know each other just a bit better..."

Nell had lain back on the bed and had let her mind wander away from depressing thoughts when a light tap came on the door. Sitting up, she pushed herself off the bed and went over, pulling it open and seeing, as she had expected, Gareth standing there. He was smiling, and holding a bottle of wine and two glasses.

"Care to join me?" he inquired, and, with a slight tinge to his cheeks, "Since my ship's in the best of care, I thought we could spend some time getting to know each other just a bit better..."

She smiled up at him and slipped out, pulling the door shut behind her.
"I'd love to," she replied, and eyed the wine. "Don't you think that would go better with something to eat?"

So they ended up nabbing some sandwiches and two or three sweets from Howel before making their way to the stern of the ship. A few benches were in place next to the railing and here they sat, in a peaceful silence at first as Gareth opened the wine and poured first a glass for Nell, then one for himself. She sipped at it hesitantly- she'd never had wine before. Ale, of course, plenty of it- but never wine. After the first swallow she let out a whistle and shook her head, smacking her lips at the taste.
"Strong stuff," she said with a grin, but took another sip anyway. She did want to know him better- she wanted to know about his history and his beliefs, what he enjoyed most and what would bore him, what kind of songs he sang, if he sang at all- how far he had traveled... but she didn't know how to ask-- so after a third sip of the strong wine (which made her purse her lips) she sloshed the liquid around in the glass, then smiled at him again.
"You go first," she said simply, and picked up one of the sandwiches to nibble on, leaning against him playfully and giving him a nudge.

--

Naden had actually dozed off for a bit, but when he came to he was stiff and decided he needed to get up and move around a bit. Struggling a little, he got to his feet, making his way to the wheel where Dauron had taken over once again. He stopped next to him and stood there in silence for a few minutes, before turning and offering him a wordless grin.

"I'd love to," she replied, and eyed the wine. "Don't you think that would go better with something to eat?"

"That sounds like a great idea!" Gareth grinned, and they stopped by the Galley to fetch a few things... though the sea-captain took time to tender an apology to Howel before they went up on deck.

As he watched Nell take a third sip of the wine, and the expression on her face, "If you don't care for it," Gareth said, "I won't be offended at all," and then, "who first?" he asked.
she sloshed the liquid around in the glass, then smiled at him again.
"You go first," she said simply, and picked up one of the sandwiches to nibble on, leaning against him playfully and giving him a nudge.

Very much liking Nell's playful 'nudges', Gareth finished the pastry he'd been chewing on, and brushed the crumbs from his shirt and fingers, and putting his arm around his new love's shoulders, idly played with a lock of her cropped hair.

"Well..." he said thoughtfully, "I don't know how much - or what you - or your father knew of me in Dol Amroth... but you do know I'm half-elf..." and when she nodded, so did he. But, in thinking of Nell's now-dead parent, Gareth sobered, and setting down his glass, touched her cheek gently.

"There's something I'd like to say before I go on," he said softly, "and that's... while I didn't know your father very well, I liked what I saw. He was a fine sailor, Nell, and you should be proud of him."

But, returning to his previous subject, "I am," he said, "One thousand and four years old. - It was my mother who was elven," Gareth explained, and went on to relate about his father's accident... her sailing... and his life with the foster-parents she'd left him with.

"The Elanor is named after her," the fisherman added, and patted the railing behind him with a smile.

Considering his next words, "I've always loved the sea, Nell... I know you can tell that... and I'd rather be sailing than anywhere else - though I do have a house in Dol Amroth. I like to keep 'busy', though... whether afloat or at home. I read quite a bit... I like studying the history of ships most of all. The last three Elanor's I designed myself - but I'm no shipwright!" and at that, Gareth grinned at her.

"You've seen, too," and he then grimaced over his earlier 'outburst', "that I'm not 'perfect', either. I do have a temper... but I don't often 'snap' like I did. I'm much more patient - usually. I like joking, really I do... and with Dauron most of all. We're distantly related - though our mothers... did you know that?" he inquired.

"But, since I like fishing, too, patience does come in 'handy'. - And, I don't mean just the nets... I like just sitting quietly amidships, and seeing what I can catch... or walking the beaches of Dol Amroth and seeing what I can find that's washed up from the tide... and..."

Breaking off, Gareth reddened, and gazed at the riverbank his ship was following. "I suppose," he said in a low voice, "I'm really a rather 'boring' person, Nell... and I'd not realized how 'lonely' a life I've lead all these centuries. Not until now..." and smiling shyly at her, kissed Nell's brow lightly, and then winked. "Your turn!" he teased, but was listening eagerly for what she would share...

Dauron said sincerely, "My heart felt apologies, my friend, if I may still be allowed to call you that." His eyes held Gareth's questioningly.

Dauron knew exactly how his friend felt. He had been driven to build his own vessel rather than use his father's fleet and had been on his own for many years now, busy all the time. He too loved the world of ships and sailing and though he spent far more time on trade upriver than Gareth, he too had spent many trips to the open sea. He looked at his friend thoughtfully, knowing how ill-timed his humor had been but relieved that Gareth and he had gotten past their brief argument. He knew not what he would do without that friendship, as Gareth had been his mentor for many years. He had learned much of what he knew from the half-elf.

"Come on, Dauron... I'll 'treat' you to a glass of wine... and don't think I don't know you 'found' my special hiding-place!" he teased, and dragged his best friend down to his own cabin to do so.

There they sat, indulging in some of Gareth's fine wine, talking of times past and times to come and once again finding the humor and teasing which they had always found in each other's company. Dauron finally set his glass on the small table and told Gareth he'd better get back to steering this trusty vessel before he had had too much to drink to find his way.

He stood once more at the wheel, his mate Bernor keeping faithful watch of the markers and buoys, and his mind drifted. He could see that Gareth was very much in love with his Nell and wondered how long it would be before he asked the young maiden to be his wife, as he was certain that that moment would surely come. "He'd better ask me to attend to the ceremonies right here onboard the Elanor," he muttered to himself.

Naden had slipped to his side while he was lost in his day-dreams and it wasn't until he muttered these words, that he suddenly noticed Naden standing next to him, a wordless grin on his face. Grinning back, he said, "Well, he'd better or I'll never forgive him."

Becoming more serious, he glanced at Naden. "So we have yet no idea where to find Thorongil. Well, we'll be stopping first in Osgilliath and can check the local taverns and inns there first. If he is not to be found, someone may have heard where he might be." He shook his head at the thought but smiled at Naden. "And then you may have the opportunity to revenge yourself on me by putting me on horseback to ride to Minas Tirith. I have rarely ever been close to a horse, much less ridden one." He noticed the mischievous gleam in Naden's eye.

Nell listened to everything he said intently, her heart aching for his losses and a smile brushing her lips as he spoke about his ships, and his relation to Dauron…

“First, the wine is fine,” Nell said with a quiet smile, “I’ve never had wine before- and the taste is strong, but there’s nothing wrong with it. Secondly, you’re not boring- Certainly the most interesting person I’ve ever met. And thirdly, if you are boring, then I am much worse.”
She ended with a laugh and sipped at the wine again, trying to think of where to start. Her own life wasn’t much of a tale to her own mind, but she figured it would be best to go ahead and get it out with.
“My mother- Linelwyn- died when I was an infant, and my father’s ship was named after her. I don’t remember her at all- but my father often spoke of her and assured me that I looked like her. Always said he was glad that I’d take after her and not him- bless his soul, he didn’t know much about raising a child, and less about raising a daughter...”
She laughed unexpectedly at some memory that flitted through her mind, turning her gaze back on Gareth and leaning comfortably against him.
“He did his best, though- I can use a sword and work on a ship, I know fish and sails and every swear-word ever said in Dol Amroth, but I don’t know the first thing about being a proper lady- as I’m sure you’ve guessed… anyway, that’s about it. I was raised to be a sailor by my father, and the crew was like my family. We spent more time at sea than on land. Nothing was any different for us until- well, you know. And he just wanted to protect me… the dear old fool. If only he could have foreseen….”
Nell’s voice trailed off and she shook her head, her smile now less joyful. After a moment a sigh escaped her lips and she rested her head against Gareth’s shoulder.
“It doesn’t matter now, though- that’s all over, and now I’ve found you. Father would be pleased with that, certainly.”
Another sip of wine was in order, then she continued, not moving from her place nestled against him.
“We have something else in common- we’d both rather be sailing than doing anything else. And I have a temper as well… you haven’t seen it yet, but I promise you it’s there. I was often called ‘difficult’ by the women my father knew, and the wives of the crewmen- impossible might have been more like it. But I, too, can be patient.”
She had purposely avoided saying much about the two years in Umbar, or the day the ship was taken- it was something she wanted to share, one day, if only to let someone else carry some of the weight of the memory- but not this day, not this pleasant day. They had only just brushed disaster with a Corsair ship- now was not the time to go dredging up old sorrows. At the moment, in fact, Nell didn’t feel sorrowful at all- just happy, and content. She took another drink and perked up her ears- the sounds of singing and music were floating to meet them. It was a tune she recognized, and she hummed a little, deciding not to sing along, then spoke without lifting her head from Gareth’s shoulder.
“Do you sing, Captain?” she asked, as the random question entered her thoughts.

--

"So we have yet no idea where to find Thorongil. Well, we'll be stopping first in Osgilliath and can check the local taverns and inns there first. If he is not to be found, someone may have heard where he might be." He shook his head at the thought but smiled at Naden. "And then you may have the opportunity to revenge yourself on me by putting me on horseback to ride to Minas Tirith. I have rarely ever been close to a horse, much less ridden one." He noticed the mischievous gleam in Naden's eye.

“I’d never dream of getting revenge on you, Dauron,” Naden answered, his voice clearly sarcastic, “But you very well may have to ride a horse, if you want to accompany me to Minas Tirith. And I’ll be sure to find the fastest and most ornery that I can locate to serve as your steed. Getting thrown off a bucking horse is just like being thrown out of a bed on a heeling ship- except this ship is likely to stomp on you.”
He was grinning, not serious at all, but enjoying his threats- then his own mood became more serious.
“I have an idea of where he may be- in an inn in Osgiliath, and if not there, somewhere in the White City- but there will be someone who can tell me in that inn, if he isn’t there himself.”
He stood silent for a long moment, then sighed heavily.
“I really wish I had some leaf,” he commented, almost grumbling, “Its been too long since I had a proper smoke.”

"You are not 'boring'!" Gareth protested with a smile, and then set himself to listening again as Nell talked... and found himself overjoyed to think her father would be 'pleased' they two had found each other.

Tightening his arms around Nell just a bit, Gareth noticed she'd not spoken of Umbar... but said nothing. He'd seen what he'd seen in the 'Black Anchor', and for now, that was enough.
the sounds of singing and music were floating to meet them. It was a tune she recognized, and she hummed a little, deciding not to sing along, then spoke without lifting her head from Gareth’s shoulder.
“Do you sing, Captain?” she asked, as the random question entered her thoughts.

Gareth glanced amidships, hearing Allon and several of his crew had broken out their instruments to while away the time with a few songs.

At Nell's question, however, the half-elven fisherman's face slowly began to turn red. "S-sometimes," he answered nervously. "Mostly... I sing along in the choruses," Gareth explained, for though his voice was an excellent tenor, he'd never been 'comfortable' with singing alone.

Yet, it was a... 'hobby' he'd not yet spoken of to Nell... and one he preferred to keep as private as possible... that, 'occasionally', he composed songs in the quiet hours of sailing on his beloved ships. But, always, he 'introduced' them to his crew as 'old songs' they might not have heard before... and getting away with it because of his much-greater age. And when he very shyly added that bit of information about himself, Gareth's blush only deepened.

And, what (partly) added to his color right now, was that a melody, and words had popped into his mind as he thought about what Nell had asked. - And, when his new love moved her head to look at him questioningly, he gulped.

"You want me to sing something I wrote... don't you?" Gareth was quite certain she'd say yes... and (of course) she did.

"Don't tell... please?" he begged, "I'd never hear the 'end' of it from Dauron, you know..." quite forgetting (for the moment) that sitting where they were in the stern of the Elanor V, his red-haired best friend would quite likely hear Gareth's quiet voice borne on the wind - though not the actual word's he'd be singing.

Still red, Gareth then leaned closer, and gazing into Nell's eyes, he did as she asked...

"Have you ever seen the ocean's end-
Where waters wide meet the sky?
Do you say the sea is blue-
Or are her depths in shades of green?

Have you heard her heartbeat-
Playing songs along the shore?
Can you hear her music-
In the wind and in the waves?

Will you come and walk with me-
Or dance with me upon the sand?
Do you know how much I love you-
Shall the ocean speak for me?

As great as her wideness-
As steady as her tides-
As deep as depths unseen-
So beats my heart for thee…

Shall we sail upon the sea-
Shall we sail across the waves?
A ship of love will carry us…
O'er the sea… the sea… and you… and me…"
*

His voice was little over a whisper, and as the song died away, Gareth moved his head closer, and shyly, lovingly, and deeply, kissed the love of his life.

When he'd ended it, the half-elf shook his head in wonder. "You are amazing, Nell!" he whispered, adding softly, "You take my breath away!" and kissed her again... until - quite abruptly, there was a shout from Bernor, and the Elanor listed to one side.

"Hard a-port!" the voice had snapped, and startled, Gareth could hear, and feel his beloved vessel's keel scraping the bottom of the river.

They weren't running aground... he could tell that, but giving Nell a very mischievous grin, Elanor's captain pulled her up with him, and leaned over the railing to shake his head at his very best friend.

"What are you doing to my ship, you red-headed rascal?" Gareth yelled, and sent a broad wink to Naden as he and Nell then went down to join the others on deck. "If you put us aground," he went on teasingly, "I'll make you tow the Elanor out - single handedly!!"

Yet, seeing the sun beginning to lower in the western sky, and knowing very well that his old friend knew exactly what he was doing, "Shall we drop anchor when the sun sets, Dauron?" Gareth inquired, glancing again at Naden. "I don't want to 'delay' us... but if it's safer, I'd rather wait until tomorrow morning to go on..."

Dauron had teased Naden about having the opportunity to avenge himself, and the Ranger took that opportunity, joking back about the ornery, ill-behaved horse he would especially search for to give Dauron. His eyes opened wide in mock horror and he backed away from Naden, laughing. "Spare me from the vengeance of Rangers." Later, Naden expressed a wish for a 'proper smoke'. Dauron's eyes gleamed as he asked to be excused for a moment or two, returning with a small white cloth wrapped around something. Handing it to Naden, he chuckled. "A special treat, my friend, for all you have suffered. A bit of pipe weed that we did not end up selling to the Umbarians." He sat back and watched while Naden eyed him with surprise. Patting the ranger on the back, he excused himself to head back to the wheel as he had been gone from his duties long enough.

As he steered, he listened not only to Bernor, calling out periodically with marker changes, but also the sailors, who had pulled out an assortment of instruments and were playing and singing to their own pleasure. The afternoon was late and the evening was fast approaching when he heard a soft tenor behind him, singing softly a tune he had never heard before. As the wind was blowing in his direction, it carried much of the song with it. It was a song of love...of the sea, and of a woman. Dauron smiled gently and listened, while Gareth sang to his lady, too quietly for the rest of the sailors to hear but loud enough for Dauron to enjoy it's poignancy.

The song had finished and there was quiet behind him until Bernor called out a sudden change in the channel. "Hard a-port!" the voice had snapped. Dauron swung the wheel hard yet even with Bernor's and his quick action, he could feel and hear the keel scraping on an unexpected shoal that had shifted into the channel.

"What are you doing to my ship, you red-headed rascal?" Gareth yelled, and sent a broad wink to Naden as he and Nell then went down to join the others on deck. "If you put us aground," he went on teasingly, "I'll make you tow the Elanor out - single handedly!!"

"I thought you were too bored, Gareth, so I thought I'd give you something to lighten your day," Dauron quipped, grinning and winking at Nell as he did so.

"Bernor!" Dauron called to his mate. "What do you think? Do the channel markers seem to be increasing ahead?" His mate stood, pulling out a long tubelike piece of brass from his waist band which puzzled many of the sailors and held one end up to his eye for a long moment. Then he yelled back at Dauron, "I'm seeing several new markers within a hundred feet. The storm has changed much, Captain." "Thank you, Bernor, you can stand down for now," Dauron called back to him.

Turning to the rest of the sailors, he ordered, "Drop anchor!" Turning to Gareth, he said, "Your wish is my command, Captain." He saluted and grinned for a moment and then said seriously, "I do believe it would be better to stay the night right here. The tide is going out and with the changes that Bernor is seeing, it will make rough and very slow going anyway, as we would have to hang a man in front with a lanten to spot all the markers. It would be better to progress in the morning in full daylight and when the tide is running upriver with us rather than against us."

Looking at Naden, knowing how delays would disturb him, Dauron told him, "believe it or not, we will make better time running with the tide in daylight than against it in the pitch black of night. We will make Osgilliath by mid-afternoon at the latest provided the river opens up upriver as it usually does once away from the deltas at the confluence with the sea. Trust me, Naden, I know how hurried you are but better this way than running aground and losing two days."

Naden was so pleased with the weed that he considered dropping all thoughts of revenge- but with a laugh he dismissed such a thought and asked a passing crewman to fetch his pipe and tinder-box. It wasn't long before he was smoking again, savouring the taste...
--

"You want me to sing something I wrote... don't you?" Gareth was quite certain she'd say yes... and (of course) she did.

"Don't tell... please?" he begged, "I'd never hear the 'end' of it from Dauron, you know..." quite forgetting (for the moment) that sitting where they were in the stern of the Elanor V, his red-haired best friend would quite likely hear Gareth's quiet voice borne on the wind - though not the actual word's he'd be singing.

Still red, Gareth then leaned closer, and gazing into Nell's eyes, he did as she asked...

As Gareth sang, a quiet smile touched Nell's lips and she let the rest of the world fade away, letting herself get lost in his soft words and voice. As the song drew to a close she felt as though her heart would burst with love for him- he looked so bashful and shy, but absolutely perfect in her eyes.

Hard a-port!" the voice had snapped, and startled, Gareth could hear, and feel his beloved vessel's keel scraping the bottom of the river.

Trust me, Naden, I know how hurried you are but better this way than running aground and losing two days."

Naden didn't say anything for a minute, puffing on his pipe with narrowed eyes.
"You're lucky," he said at last, a slight grin growing, "This leaf has put me in an agreeable mood- so I'm not complaining. Plus, you two are the sailors, not me... "
He blew a small cloud of smoke into the air and turned to Gareth, pointing the pipe at him like it was a finger.
"Just give me something good for drinking, promise me we'll be off again as soon as we can, and I'll say no more about it."

"You could be a dragon, smoking," Nell suddenly put in, shaking her head with a slight grin, still quite elated from Gareth's song, "More like to a chimney, though."
"Oh, a dragon, no doubt," the ranger replied without missing a beat, and gestured at Dauron, "He'd be the chimney."

Chuckling at Nell's teasing, Gareth put his arm around her and held her close to his side.

"He's tall enough for it!" he snickered, but again turned serious when answering the Ranger. "I'd think we can head off at first light," and Gareth glanced at Dauron for his agreement. "As for something 'good' to drink..." the half-elven fisherman then grinned widely. "I do believe that not all our supply of ale was sent overboard," Gareth went on, "but even if it did... I still have a good supply of wine that did not. Either way, between your pipe," and he waved away another cloud of smoke the Ranger sent his way, "and something to drink... I imagine Howel has dinner well underway by now. - Shall we?" he inquired, and after his best friend had lashed the wheel, Gareth led the way below, once again taking Nell's hand in his own.

While they were eating dinner, Gareth's heart was light, and often, he either smiled at Nell, or squeezed her hand under the table. "You know," he commented at one point during the conversation, "Perhaps... one day, when we've more 'time', I should bring the Elanor up the Anduin again. There's not time for it now, but I'd like to try catching fresh-water fish from my ship."

The rest of the evening was a pleasant one, and as before, Gareth walked Nell back to her cabin, kissed her good night, and then headed for his own.

As promised, though, at first light, the Elanor's sails were unfurled, and the small vessel was again headed up-river. The winds were stronger this day, Gareth noted, and with Nell standing with him, he watched their progress from the bow.

Some time after high sun, however, the Elanor was forced to slow... as they began to encounter more and more ships laying at anchor along the Anduin's riverbanks.

"Thorongil's do you think?" Gareth inquired of Naden, both he and Nell having joined the Ranger and Dauron at the Wheel. And then, "I hope we can find a place to dock," he added, and glanced at his best friend. "Do you have a particular place in mind for us, Dauron?" he asked, "Someplace you normally set anchor with the Flying Gull?"

As the ElanorV sailed upriver, it began to have to weave through many other docked or anchored vessels. The steering became more treacherous and Dauron focussed intensely as Bernor and Allon both watched the starboard and port sides. Gareth, Nell and Naden stood at his side but he barely noticed them, so concentrated was he on the steering.

"Thorongil's do you think?" Gareth inquired of Naden. And then, "I hope we can find a place to dock," he added, and glanced at his best friend. "Do you have a particular place in mind for us, Dauron?" he asked, "Someplace you normally set anchor with the Flying Gull?"

Hmmm? Oh, yes. Around the next bend ahead there's a small dock near Osgilliath that we use all the time," he said distractedly. Calling out to his Mate, "Bernor, alert me when we get close to our docking area." His mate raised his hand in acknowledgement and turned his eyes back to the river. As they rounded the bend, Bernor called back to Dauron, "Sir, on the starboard, coming up." Dauron watched carefully and saw the slip and began to navigate the boat into it. When the slid between the pilings, the sailors began to toss tie down ropes to the men onshore, who tied down the vessel. Dauron ordered, "Lower anchor!" When the vessel was secured, he turned to Gareth and smiled, "Here we are, safe and sound. And I'm heading for the nearest inn just up the road for an ale. Anyone coming along?"
