-------

A chill ran down Reya's spine as she opened the door to the balcony and stepped outside. Noticing that she wasn't the only one who had gone out for fresh air, she walked to the part of the balcony which had overview of the entrance. The giant snowflakes falling from the sky melted as they landed on her tanned skin, running in tiny streams down her back. With her light-brown hair up, the girl had expected this, but took no notice of it as several mouthfuls of cherry-wine did their work on her senses. She lifted the glass to her lips and took yet another sip, carefully, so that she wouldn't spill any on her dress. The dress she had chosen for the occasion was a beautiful, black one, with bare shoulders, practically no sleeves, and lacing in the back - made from a fabric that glittered slightly in the light, like distant stars on the night sky. Her mask, a similar black one, covered her face from halfway down her forehead, to the middle of her nose. It had tiny crystals sown on, and some black feathers where it's lace disappeared into the girl's hair. All in all, the outfit soothed her well; letting her pass for the princess she was so far from being.

From high up in the Citadel of Minas Tirith, Reya could see down upon the courtyard and the entrance to the stables. As she watched the yard from above, the huge gate opened, letting in several riders on horseback. There were three women, and four men - one without escort. The girl studied the man without escort as he left his horses in the care of the servants, and walked up the massive stairs to the main door, a few steps ahead of his company. He said something to the guards, and they let the lot of them in without further questions. And as the stable-boys led the horses away, the gate closed once more.

With the newcomers gone, the girl turned away from the courtyard, staring out into the night, her silvery eyes turning hazy. She wasn't sure if it was the wine, but she was feeling happier then she had felt for a long time. Maybe going to the Masquerade wasn't such a bad idea after all, she thought to herself. Finishing the wine rather quickly, she put the glass on the railing, unable to decide if it was time to get some more.

Nathron entered onto the balcony, it was to crowded inside, walking almost lazily in no particular direction. The snow fell about him, contrasting oddly with his bright, flaming red hair. His garment was simple, a red shirt with full length sleeves, black gloves, breeches, and knee high black boots. From behind a mask of black fabric, with red and gold filagree inlaid in simple strands of forest shape, his green eyes glittered. A black cape topped off the constume, thrown over one shoulder in an elegant fashion.
He breathed in the smell of candles, cradleing his cup of wine in both of his hands. Letting the crisp, cold, night air fill his lungs and reguvinate him, Nathron silently observed the guests in all their simple and elaborate wear. He nodded courteously when approached but spoke little, enjoying just the pleasant atmosphere.
His elven senses (for he was an elf) picked up the sound of horses arriving through the gates. Nathron went to investigate, stopping at the balcony ledge. He noticed that he was near someone and he caught himself smiling.
"It is a fine night." he said to no one in particular.

Tasar steps tentatively into the crowded ballroom. She is not used to such large parties, and so she is feeling particularly shy this evening. She looks magnificent, though; she and her mother had spent endless hours perfecting the style of her hair, the make of her dress, and locating the proper heirloom to adorn her bare collar.

Her hair had been arranged into a loose, intricate bun at the nape of her neck. Any loose tendrils, for there are several, curl against the smooth, bared skin of her back. Her slight bangs brush gently against her unworried forehead. Her mother had allowed her the use of one of her precious mithril combs, which sits at the base of her skull, above the gathering of her hair.

Her gown is made of a midnight blue velvet. It drapes around her shoulders, revealing just the correct amount of cleavage to be both stylish and proper. The tone of her dress brings out the blue, rather than the green, in her eyes, and tonight they seem to sparkle with a secret even she is not quite aware of. The dress follows the curves of her frame, hugging her waist as if the embrace of a secret lover. A belt of silver hammered leaves rests over her hips, the long stretch of the excess chain flowing down the middle of her frame to her knees. The sleeves close tightly around her wrists, rather than pooling around her hands, as is common Elven fashion. The sleeves and the neckline are embroidered with silver thread that glistens when she moves. When her feet do peek out from the hem of her dress, which trails along the floor, it is revealed that they are covered by delicate silver slippers.

She and her mother had looked for what seemed like an eternity through jewelry boxes and envelopes from relatives and family friends. They had finally decided upon a delicate silver chain, upon which hangs the small figure of a star with a sapphire implanted in its dead center. The star rests in the hollow of her throat. Her skin gleams with an inner light, an anticipation and excitement only to be witnessed in a first time attendant.

Her mask had been specially ordered for the occasion, and is made of a material the same color as her gown, though this is a crinkly satin. It is bordered in a very delicate lace, and her eyes were rimmed in a light sprinkling of silver glitter.

Despite her appearance, she is still unsure as to her place and what to do, so she lingers among the fringes of the excitement, watching the others with wide eyes.

Thalion wandered into the grand ballroom, eyes alert and searching. He had not wanted to come, but something, maybe just his elven instincts, told him he needed to. He was dressed in a deep grey shirt of satin with little silver threaded details that adorned the collar and the ends of the fuill length sleeves. His mask was of the same material as his shirt, with the same silver details. He wore nothing on his hands except a ring of mithril on the middle finger of his left hand. He had on a black belt, breeches and knee high black boots. His dark hair fell to his shoulders and had a slight wave to it, and his piercing blue eyes were brought out by the grey of the shirt.

He wandered into the ballroom, looking for someone, anyone to talk to. He felt awkward, wandering around alone when everyone else was sitting in groups and talking. He quickly went over to where the refreshment were and snatched up two glasses of cherry wine, hoping to find a young maiden to share a drink with. As he moved away form the refreshments, he caught a glimpse of a young woman through the throngs of people. She was standing alone, watching the others in the room with widened eyes. He walked over to her, with a grace that only years of fighting could bring out in people. He walked easily up to the girl. As he get closer, he discovered that she was even more beautiful up close, in a dress of blue velvet, and with a figure that all young men wish to caress and hold onto. She had a stone at her throat, a sapphire, that helped to bring out the blue in her eyes.

Easily and carefully he walked up to her, not wishing to frighten her. He bowed slightly, offering her the drink in his hand. "My lady, do you wish to share a drink with me on this lovely night? My name is Thalion, and I couldn't help but notice you from across the room. May I inquire as to who you are?"

Tasar smiles faintly, her eyes sparkling at the prospect of someone to speak to, her lips moving into a pleasing curve. She takes the offered drink politely and takes a sip, enjoying the tart bite of the cherry on her tongue. She then realizes that she must respond, and does so. "I am Tasar, from Rivendell." She smiles slightly and looks down into her cup, as if it will tell her what to say next. "There is nothing particularly interesting about me, though."

She cradles the cup of wine between her palms and lifts it for a sip, her eyes trailing over the man who had been so kind as to take notice of her. She lowers the cup again and a slightly quizzical expression crosses her features. "I seem to remember seeing you somewhere before. Do you travel much?"

"I am Tasar, from Rivendell." Thalion nodded politely at the mention of her name. "It is a beautiful name, for a beautiful girl. And there must be something interesting about you for me to find out." He looked at her with a twinkle in his eyes. As he studied her her face flickered with an expression of uncertainty. She said, "I seem to remember seeing you somewhere before. Do you travel much?" Thalion looked down at his own cup of wine, imitating Tasar and her movements just a few minutes before. He was unsure of how to answer, so he gave a brief and somewhat vague one. "I have passed through Rivendell a few times, but I am sure I would have remembered seeing a woman as lovely as you. As for my other travels, I travel throughout the lands, and have seen most of them from Mordor to the Shire." Thalion looked down, wondering if he should have told her this much, in such a public place. On a sudden impulse, he asked her shyly, with a boyish grin, "Would you like to take a walk outside with me? I would love to learn more about you."

Tasar tilts her head to the side, slightly, calculating his movements. She knows that there is something he is holding back, but because he is such a new acquaintance, she will not push anything. She smiles at the mention of the outdoors, for she can tend to be rather claustrophobic, particularly in uncomfortably large crowds. She nods demurely in answer to his question, takes a sip of her wine, and moves to follow him as the two walk out to the stone courtyard of Minas Tirith.

She looks out upon the plains, across the river, now claimed solely for men, and upon the dormant lands of Mordor. It is odd to look upon this landscape now without the constant thunder, the red flashes illuminating the violent sky. The blue scenery over the black crags of the mountains seems out of place in that setting, as if it has not yet settled. She smiles. "Things have changed so greatly."

A frown then mars the porcelain skin of her forehead. Things are indeed changing, and the presence of the elves must as well. The land is regenerating, rejuvenating, and the elves would not be there to guide it any longer. Men, rangers, would take over that task. She sighs and takes another sip of her wine, draining the glass.

Thalion and Tasar wandered outside, Thalion thankfuil fo rthe breaths of fresh air. Being around women, especially beautiful ones, made him nervous. As they stood over looking the plains, Tasar said, "Things have changed so greatly." Thalion looked at her and saw the happy smile on her face. "Things have changed," he agreed. "But they were definitely for the better." He pointed to the blue sky. "I'm still not used to that. Last time I traveled there, it was dark and red. Horrible. Terrifying. I felt as though I would never be happy again." He looked at the mountains. "I lost all hope there," he whispered. He looked down at his feet, realizing what he just said, and stood in the uncomfortable silence.

Nathron realised that no answer was soon to be forthcoming. Excusing himself with a nod of his head he wandered silently off into the crowds, standing out starkly with his bright fall-hued cloths and red hair. He smiled to the other guests, enjoying the feel of this celebration, held high up in Minas Tirith. He looked down and smiled, it had been to long since he had enjoyed the pleasure of other's company.
"I lost all hope there,"

Standing nearby two people were conversing, one male and one female. He heard the male's last remark, and glanced at him with eyes of understanding.
"But it is no more, and hope has returned to this land." He smiled, raising his glass in salute, "I think that we need not fear the shadows any longer, or at the very least, not for this night."

Ellen slid into the room, her long, red hair resting on her shoulder and down her back. Her emerald gown clung to her slender chest and billowed out around her legs in a cloud of green. Her mask, made from the same material as her gown, obscured her fine, angular face, and almost hid her dark, blazing blue eyes. She walked around the edge of the room. She saw a group of people who seemed to be chatting just outside on a balcony. Maybe they would welcome her.
As she walked over she overheard one of them talking about the shadow over Mordor.
"Hello, I am Ellen, of Lamedon. I hope I'm not intruding?"

"Hello, I am Ellen, of Lamedon. I hope I'm not intruding?"

"I do not believe that you are, Ellen." Nathron said, bowing to the new arrival. "Please, allow me to introduce myself, I am Nathron, of no particular location." He added with a grin, the green hue of his eyes twinkling with delight, behind his mask, at making the aquantance of another.
"Tell me, lady Ellen, how are you enjoying this masquarade? I know not about you, but I think it very fine indeed." He brushed away, angrily, a strand of his red hair. It had always had an annoying tendancy to get in his way when he did not want it to.

Ellen replied, saying she was enjoying the masquerade very much, when an arrow thudded sharply into the throne of Arwen near her heart, and another beside Aragorns head. There were screams and people started running around like terrified cattle.

(So we really do that assassination stuff? Nice~)

Illian ,a tall and slim Noldorin Elf from Rivendell, felt it's too crowded indoors. Therefore, he wandered to a nearby balcony, and was about to join the chat held by 4 elves (the 4 mentioned above). His black hair rested tidily on his head, and his all-black garment (including his mask) matched his hair colour well (villain style). As to all guests, Illian was shocked to see the arrows flying towards the King and Queen. He immediately regained his calmness though, and put his hand on the hilt of his sword, ready for anything.

Nathron smiled and put his drink on the table. Two arrows suddenly flew out, both striking dangerously close to the king Aragorn, and the Queen Arwen. Nathron gasped audibly, shocked at the gaull of whomever had done that.
He looked about for the assassin, but everyone was disguised! He couldn't tell who was who anymore! Nathron looked about again but finding no conformation to his thoughts he was forced to deal witht he issue in private.
"This could mean trouble." He said quietly, causing those near him to jump in startlement for a dark, chilly, silence had fallen upon the masses.

( Minstral, maybe our characters can do some interaction? Let me try...)
Illian leaned towards the elf, who has just said 'that could mean trouble', and whispered.

'No doubt this IS a trobule, sire. But I feared that the assassin may turn upon the guests -- like you and me. The King is so well guarded now, he/she/it won't get a second chance. Besides, everyone here is disguised...I afraid that...'

After his whisper, Illian started to ponder, who in Arda could have done such a thing.

He nodded to the elf who had spoken.
"Yes, your logic is quite correct." He shook his head, "How in Varda is this ever going to be solved? I wish I could see some of the faces of the guests. Those are easier to read then the masks they wear." He said in an equall whisper.

Nathron shook his head, "They seemed to have come from the crowds, near to the doors leading to this balcony. Judging by their angle of course, but I can not be certain."
Nathron shifted from one foot to another, "I'm Nathron, pleased to meet you good sir. What is your name? And do you have any idea what will happen, unfortunetly I do not usually socialize and I've only been to a few attepmted assassinations in my life, namly my own, so I am afraid that I'm a little lost."

Illian replied: 'I'm Illian of Rivendell. A pleasure to meet you, Nathron. Assassinations I've seen throughout my life, and I hope I may be of some help.
But this is definitely not the place to discuss such matters!'
'Let's move -- and bring your new friends if you want.' He added with a grin.

(one thing, Ellen isn't an elf. just clarafying that)
Ellen turned to the elf who had joined them.
"Well, we can be sure of one thing, it wasn't me." she said, smiling wryly. " It will be difficult to discover the assassin. By the way, Illian, I am Ellen of Lamedon. I am pleased to met you."
Illian turned to her and beckoned her to follow.

Illian 's getting a bit nervous now...

'Right, right...nice to meet you lady.Come, let's get somewhere else -- somewhere quieter. Prepare for anything, the assassin is probably lurking around.'

Beckoning the company to follow, Illian strode out of the balcony, and was leaving the ballroom.

Reya had watched the group of people coming out to the balcony, but feeling dizzy from the several portions of cherry-wine had her taking a trip to the restroom, in hope of finding a quieter place. As the attempted assasination took place, she was walking up the stairs, back to the crowded ball-room.

In the same second as she reached the top of the stairs, a black-haired elf from before appeared in the doorway, stunning her a second. Without knowing what to do, the girl put up a worried face, and addressed him in a concerned tone. "My Lord, would you care to tell me what is going on in there? I heard the screams and arrows being mentioned, but is someone really trying to kill the King?"

((reya is back, in crystals and black , by the way, i've got a niese that's named ellen, so gotta say that's a pretty name, wordsmith ))

Nathron paused unsure of what to do. He had never been in such a situation...and he was not liking it. He didn't know who was the enemy, and it could be anyone. It was un nerving and he shuddered involentarily. Never the less, he followed Illian and the others without question.
They ended up running into a young woman, and something troubled her. She didn't seem to know what had happened. Was she the guilty party perhaps? Nathron stiffened visably, his hand going to his secreted dagger, his only weapon, in his glove, making it appear as if his hand had cramped up. He lowered his hand, the dagger now concealed in his other palm. He would only use it is she turned out to be the assassin and not to kill only to halt their escape.
"It is true my lady, what you have heard. But both the King and the Queen are under attack..." He did not finish his statment, he would let someone else do that.

Illian quickly added,'Well, the King and Queen are not hurt at all, lady. If you go to the hall, maybe you'll understand what happened.' He was in doubt with the woman's sudden appearance, so he was trying to elude her as soon as possible.

"Oh, that won't be necessary, I was actually on my way out." The girl regretted the sentence the moment she finished it. From the looks of them, the groupg had her pointed out as the assassin already. Reya made a short laugh, and spoke up smirking calmly; "I am not the assassin, if that is what you think. I was on the lower floor until now. If anyone of us was likely to be the one, It would be one of you, rushing out of the ballroom a bit too hasty..." Her voice trailed off as she realized what she had just said. Each of the people in front of her could be the one trying to kill the King!

"By the Valar..." the girl whispered, taking a step backwards, down the stairs. Her silvery eyes were wide open, staring at the masked faces of the strangers.

After a dead silence...

Illian can't stand any longer, and chuckled, 'If we 're the assassins, you should be dead now, to keep your tongue silent...haha...'

A pause (and a thought), then he continued:

'Ladies and gentlemen, speaking of masks, if we really trust each other , why don't we take them off?'

"I never said I trusted you, m'lord," the girl replied at once. "But I would rather look upon the face of the possible killer, than the mask concealing it." With this said, she bent her head forward, loosened the ribbons of her own mask, and let it fall to the ground. As her head came up again, the others acknowledged to their surprise that the girl looked terribly young, though believing her to be so, would have been a mistake.

Her big, silver-gray eyes were surrounded by dark lashes, the high cheekbones wore a rosen blush, and the balm on her lips was of a light-pink shade. "As you see," she said "Appearance may deceive. So please, take of your masks, and let's see which one of us would get away with murder."

Nathron followed suit. Figuring it best to get it over with. Using his left hand (the one without the dagger) he pulled off his black cloth mask. Hi green eyes scrutenied his companions and the new girl, his cheekbones were angled sharply, and his pointed ears were clearly visable.
"Now all of this revealing is fine and dandy, but still we are at risk of becoming suspects, as the lady here pointed out, I suggest that we keep moving." Nathron stared blankly at the others, his hand secreting the dagger into the folds of his cloak.

(hope you don't mind my joining in )

Ninquelótë sat at a table by her lonesome. She tucked a lock of her dark, wavy hair, which caused the slight point to become fully visible.

Her dress was quite exquisite. It was made, mostly, of a medium blue-lavender velvet, slightly fitted above the hips. The neckline was round, and low, but not too low, with a band silved embroidering and beading around it. The sleeves were a silk which was same colour as the velvet, with beaded outlines of flowers. They stopped a little above where one would expect the elbow to be, a band of silver and embroidering which was the same as the silver trimming the neckline. Under that band were yards of iridescent white silk making up the sleeves; traditional to many elvin folk.

The mask she wore was medium blue-lavendar silk, of course, with beaded flower outlines and silver embroidery around the edges. It perfectly showcased her silver eyes, which glowed even though she felt a bit down.

She sighed and circled the edge of her wine goblet with her index finger. She stared off, as if in a dream, only to be pulled back to reality by the whirring of the glass. "I can't believe I was left here, by my lonesome, after my brother and his wife begged me to come," she thought to herself "'Oh it shall be lots of fun, I should think! Maybe it might help you to stop feeling so depressed.' What incredulity!"

Unable to take anymore sitting down, she stood up and decided to take a walk, mostly to try and figure out whether or not to leave.

She explored a bit and came across a group of people removing their masks. Curious, she stayed back, slightly in the shadows to remain hidden.

(Hello! We need someone to be the assasin!! Maybe laurels you can do it?)

Illian took off his black mask, revealing the pale face behind it. His sea-grey eyes glimmered at the girl and Nathron,'You're right. We must move on. But I need some suggestions of where to go...This is the first time I come to this city...'

((welcome laurels! the more the merrier))

"It must be your first time indeed, m'lord." Reya shook her head smiling. "Because you cannot honestly believe that they are going to let us leave?" Her eyes met Illian's, and with a gesture of her hand, she showed him what was going on on the lower floor.

Several of the Kings men had already barricaded the door, and stood guard so that noone could get out. Two others were hastly making their way up the stairs, to join the rest in a search for the assassin in the ballroom.

"If we want to be undiscovered, at least for some time, I suggest that all of you follow me." The girl bent down and picked up her mask from the floor. Turning to the left, she nearly ran across the stair-room, around a corner, and into a little hallway on the other side. With her back against the wall she clenched her mask in her left hand, hoping that the others would get there soon.

Nathron glanced about him as he followed Reya. He felt uneasy, like he was being watched. Nathron sighed inwardly, he did not know who he could trust or who he couldn't. This whole affair was making him a nervous wreck. He fingered his dagger comfortingly, it was perhaps the only defense he would have.
He noted the newcomer with a scruteny that was rarely warrented, but he was so on edge it wouldn't do to slack off even for a second. His outward appearance would hardly give away his fear. But he doubted that he could keep that secret for long.
