Post The Ice Crystal ((KEEP))

The frozen tundra was a hard place to live. Few could cope with the long winters or the seemingly scare amount of food. But none managed better than the Lossoth, the icemen of the realm. None dared to try. They were a quiet people. Content with their customs and, because of them, unbothered by the harsh temperatures. Personal vanity led the tribes to believe that they were as one with their environment as the elves in the forests claimed to be. Perhaps they were. Few things weathered the cold and the months of darkness. Aside from the Lossoth, one major source that remained unbothered by the concerns of land living creatures; was the over abundance of sea life. The icemen relied on the fishing seasons this time of year.

One afternoon, a small boating party returned to the tribes later in the day then they normally would. Many of the Lossoth were angered by the fishermens' disregard for common courtesy. Chores would be set back this day due to their dawdling. But before any sort of argument could be started over the parties inadequacy's, a large man from the boats stepped forward. He was dressed head to toe in tanned furs to ward off the cold, and from beneath his assortment of hides he produced an odd looking stone. It was smoother than any of the stone that had washed up from the seas. The stone would not set when placed upon the ground unless it rolled into a depression. The large man seemed to be unwilling to touch the strange rock with his bare hands, and concentrated on moving the stone around with edge of his cloak.

An elder of the tribe broke through the line of curious onlookers and suddenly clutched his chest at the sight of the stone. Quickly he threw his own cloak on the strange object and gathered it up into his arms. He shuffled into the tribes main hut and shoved the rock, cloak and all, into a wooden chest. The elder then sent for a messenger to deliver word down south. They would need the assistance of the elves now if his tribe were to survive this new discovery.

Palantiri, though created for counsel, were now tools of war. What strange twist of fate could have brought such an evil thing into his homestead?

The elder realized that this did not matter anymore. What did matter now was where the tribe would conceal this burden.

~~~
Months later, riders tore from Imladris. Though the messages bore the seal of Elrond Half Elven, the reasons behind the call were not made clear. Prospects for hire were to convene in Rivendell within the week for briefing. Despite the secrey of the elves, whispers traveled far of the discovery in the north.
The Lossoth were not known to be fey in nature, but it seemed they wanted their problem out of their lands as fast as possible. Not only did the desperate tribes seek the help of the elves, but they sent word to any other nations who would listen. The icemen were not to be bought, but they clearly would not wait for trouble to come knocking on their door. The lord of Imladris sent his messengers in haste and hoped that a band could be found to travel the desolate northern lands. Most importantly, he needed a band he could trust. A seeing stone in the hands of the enemy could set his borders on the defense. Even more so than they already were in these troubled times.
(OCC: that was AWESOME, great job)
Mithennor arrived at Imladris late at night after many weeks of hard riding, her horse, Telperin, nearly ridden to exhaustion. The summons had been urgent and when Lady Galadriel had received them, she sent her fastest messengers to track her down from her wanderings. And within hours of returning to Lorien, she set out again, flying fast as she dared.
After stabling Telperin, she had been shown to a room where she could rest and clean up a bit. She knew very little of why she had been sent. She had heard whispers that something had been discovered in the far north, something that had supposedly been lost, and for good reason.
She sighed and left the room wearing an uncustomary dress in a grey-green that she was partial to. She found herself wandering the halls aimlessly, catching snatches of song and poetry as she walked. She found herself on a balcony, looking up at the sky, wondering what lay ahead for her...
The moon was a shining white goddess in the sky as Idhrenniel's soft gentle hands strapped the girth on Raella, her chesnut gelding. She easily tugged the girth around Raella's slim belly and hooked it into place.
Once again, thoughts unwanted were drifting aimlessly in her head and she could think of nothing to banish them except what she attended to at present. Raella.
When nothing else could save her from the thoughts that took a deathly choke hold on her soul, it always resulted in Raella. Riding him for one smooth canter, or even a small trot, took away any present thoughts and let her mind settle. They held a strong trust in each other, and a unbreakable connection.
"Come, let us go for a walk." Idhrenniel's soft voice rang out into the edge of Imladris, where the empty dirt road shone with rays of blanched moonlight.
She gracefully swung upon her horse, and together they began a smooth, gentle walk down the road. She released a withheld breath and began to tune into Raella. As the road progressed, Idhren glanced up at the house of Elrond; it's graceful, light wooded architecture and greenery that surrounded it always made her happy to live where she did.
how beautiful she thought to her self as she gained a bit of speed and began to trot. It was always a beautiful sight to her, Imladris.
A balcony with billowing curtains behind was lit with a gentle candle light. Idhren slowed her pace. How queer, why it was such that she had seen barely anyone in the great guest quarters. There had not been a guest here for many years.
Then she saw a figure, tall, slim, her hands rested softly on the edge of the balcony. She did not look at ease here, Idhren thought. She nudged Raella over towards the balcony's edge, below, and halted quietly.
She turned her gaze upwards towards the woman, who she saw now was an elf. Perhaps she was from a different elvendom.
Idhren let her hood fall, revealing her white, pointed ears and her braided side pleats of shimmering chocolate brown hair.
"Quel undome."
Idhren said softly, gazing up at the figure. She squared Raella's halt and poised her neck, waiting for a response.
(OOC: Sorry that took so long, and "Quel undome" means "Good evening". )
The forge was hot, the intense fires easily heating the room to a point beyond comfortable. The intricate fluke system provided a good pathway for most of the smoke to exit the building, but some still swirled in the thick air. Two ellon stood in the building, a younger reaching into the fiery pit with metal tongs to pull out a thin length of hot metal while the older stood back in a corner, arms crossed over his chest as he silently watched the apprentice.
Sirion held his breath as he reached deep into the burning pit, eyes stinging from the smoke and heat assaulting his face. Carefully, he pulled the length of red-hot metal out of the furnace and moved it fluidly to a work table behind him. He was in the final processes of making the sword, his latest test and most important in proving his skill. If he did exceedingly well, he may even move up from apprentice to journeyman. It was a prize that his master had dangled tantalizingly close to him for over a year now, and he was finally confident enough in his abilities to brave the test.
He picked up the hammer and pounded the steel, hammering out the impurities and shaping the blade. He formed it perfectly for himself. The blade was thin, capable of making quick thrusts and jabs, but he also intended to grind down both edges, making it a capable slashing weapon as well. He finished the hammering right on time, and quickly quenched the blade, hardening its edge. After it cooled, Sirion took the nearly finished blade and polished it. The refined metal held an almost silvery shine to it.
The next step was to put an edge to it. The younger ellon left the building, the master following soon after. The grinding stone was placed outside both to make room, and to give the smiths a chance to work outside the stifling forge room. Sirion began pumping his legs over the pedals, making the stone wheel spin. With practiced hands, Sirion ran the blade over the wheel, sparks flying off as he ground an edge to both sides, flipped the blade, and did the same process. Soon the metal was razor sharp.
The final piece was fitting the blade to the hilt, a separate piece that he had spent an even longer time crafting. All along the cross piece and pommel were intricate carvings of vines with broad leaves branching out of them. He had used tiny hammers and chisels to carve each vein in the leaves, each groove in the flesh of the vines. The grip was of wrapped leather and a silver and gold cord wrapped over that. He fit the blade into the hilt snugly, making sure everything was level before fastening the pommel on to hold everything together. As a final touch, he carved a light vine a few inches onto the blade, a set of three small emeralds set in a triangular pattern on the blade where it met the hilt.
When Sirion was sure he had finished everything on the blade, he wiped his finger marks off the mirrored finish and presented it to his master, who still stood behind him, arms still folded over his chest. He would still need to make the scabbard for the blade of course, but that was not his test, and not a challenge. The master smith took the blade, his face impassive. He inspected the balance of the blade, the functionality, and appetence of the blade, everything down to a detail. After what seemed like hours to Sirion, who had to consciously remind himself to breathe, the master stood straight and presented the blade back to Sirion.
"It is of perfect balance and make, a piece I would find worthy enough to sell in my shop. You have done well, Sirion. I release you from your apprenticeship, and you shall be known from henceforth as a Journeyman blacksmith. You may do as you wish now." He gave a warm smile, waiting for the realization to hit the younger ellon.
Sirion could do as he wished. He was no longer bound to an apprenticeship, for the first time in a long time; he was free to make his own choices. "Master Tincdan," he started, suddenly nervous. "I wish to answer the summons." the master smith knew immediately of which summons he spoke of, for he had mentioned it often, hinting that he would like to go. Only one thing had stopped him thus far, his apprenticeship.
Tincdan nodded lightly, "You of course, do not have to ask me permission anymore, Sirion." He said quietly. "When you are finished looking for adventure, a position will still be waiting for you to return." he said, then gave a bow of respect. Sirion, who had never really been respectfully bowed to (who would bow to an apprentice anyways?) awkwardly bowed back. Sirion placed the blade back into the smithy and hurried off to clean up and get dressed in more presentable clothes. He still had a good part of the day left, and the council for the summons was still some ways away.
(OOC Please note that I use Canadian/UK English which differs in some spelling)
Two Weeks Earlier in Imladris
He saw the young runner coming up the hill and knew that something had occurred. A tinge of bitterness rose in him because he had only returned three nights prior and he longed to find the inner peace that months of hard travel stole from him. There was a soft knock on the door.
"Mitta Rúmil." Lindir said . (Mitta- Enter)
The door opened slowly and there stood a young ellon that in mens year looked about 11 years old. He bowed and then delivered his message.
"Sulier Lord Lindir." he replied as he stepped in and bowed. "Lord Elrond would like to see you on a urgent matter. There is a visitor." he added. "He looks like the men of the Dúnedain."
"A Dúnedain." he said with interest." Tell Lord Elrond I shall be there momentarily, and thank you Rúmil"
The young ellon stood at the door and waited. Lindir noticed but played along by not looking at the boy and acting surprised when he saw the boy still there.
"Why do you wait? Am I to be escorted to Lord Elrond?"
The young ellon didn't reply and shifted his weight from leg to the next.
"Ah yes I do remember something." He teased the boy and pulled out from a pocket a finely carved wooden flute. It was made by the elves of Lorien out of Mallorn wood and handed it to the boy. A bright smile fill the boys face as the promised gift was handed to him. After several comments in praise of the workmanship he turned and ran down the path to deliver the reply. Lindir smiled as he watched the boy running down the path to Elrond Home with the reply. A short time later he knock on the door to Lord Elrond's private den. He was bidden to enter and was astonished to see who the visitor was.
"Araglas!?" Shock and surprise could be heard in his voice. This was no social call. "You should be setting up your summer camp at Annúminas. What has happened to bring here?"
Elrond asked Lindir to take a seat and then bids Araglas to tell him his tale.
"Early this Spring when the ice sheets covering Ice Bay broke, one of the bands of the Lossoth took to their boats to fish. One of the boats returned with "a giant pearl" as they called it. One of the elders knew better, it was no pearl. The ice had dragged the sea bottom and from its depths a Palantíri came into the nets. It was quickly covered and wrapped in fur to keep the evil from seeing them and then it was hidden in their camp. I would say that it is likely the lost stone from Amon Súl. Lost when the ship that rescued Arvedui was crushed in the ice and sank to the bottom with all hands. It would have been better if Ulmo had taken the stone back to the undying lands." He sighed. "But it has returned. The Lossoth Elders know the lore of the stone and they are frightened of it and seek help. They fear it as an evil portend with good reason."
Araglas continued the tale. "They came to us a month ago. The Elders had sent out 6 six of their men on foot to bring word to us, they asked that we seek out the elves here at Imladris for help. I promised them I would go myself. On their journey they were attacked by orcs that we believed took refuge in the ruins at Carn Dúm for the winter. They lost one man but they don't know if he was only wounded, dead or eaten by the orcs. They found no sign of him."
"Our scouts report that Carn Dúm is again more than just a winter refuge. It would seem that there is now a company of orcs stationed there and they don't plan to leave. If the Lossoth warrior was taken alive and the news of this find gets out I don't have to tell you what could happen. Though it is ours by right the Dúnedain do not want the stone, we do not have the means or the man power to defend it. I have come, as ask by the Lossoth, to seek out Lord Elrond for his council and aid. I do not want the Palantíri to come into the hands of men again even if only for a short time. Men are to easily corrupted as we know. We, and the Lossoth, ask that the Elves take the stone to a place of safe keeping where none can use it for ill gain. This journey will be difficult at best on the marshlands and the unfrozen tundra. You have travelled these lands Lindir and know there is little cover. I will send men to aid you as far as the northern reaches of The Hills of Evendim but I can spare no one beyond that. If the orcs are on the move from Carn Dúm we will need every man we have to defend our homes and children."
Lindir sat back in his chair astonished. "You weave quite a tale my friend and I wish it were not so but I will come with you. Most of my kit is still packed."
Elrond interrupted him. "No my friend you need not go just yet. I have sent out riders and when the company is assembled and ready you shall all set out as a group. Riders departed early this morning under the cover of darkness to take word to those I have chosen. If you would see to it that all the supplies are prepared and ready it would hasten your departure once the company is assembled."
"All shall as you ask my Lord." he replied.
"I wish I could wait and ride with you but my men are restless to get back to their homes. I would have enjoyed a few days in Imladris but we ride before the sunrise."
"You shall both dine with me this evening where this discussion will no doubt continue." No one could pass up a invitation to dine at Lord Elrond private table.
Aldaron stood before the Anduin River. Across it he could see the few mountains that would lead into Rhudaur. Behind him was the forest of Mirkwood, and the halls of his cousin, King Thranduil.
He hadn't wanted to come on this journey, but Thranduil had sent him to answer Lord Elrond's summons. The summons were quite cryptic, but the sense of urgency and danger was clear. Thranduil had asked Aldaron to go and Aldaron dutifully accepted.
"Well it has been awhile since I have left North Mirkwood," Aldaron said outloud, "hopefully this quest will challenge me."
Nimdal, Aldaron's horse, moved towards the bridge over the Anduin. Aldaron goaded him on. A trot would do the under worked horse well.
Aldaron was sure that he would reach Imladris by nightfall. If he didn't meet any obstacles along the way.
"Quel undome."
Mithennor brought herself back from her thoughts and looked down. An elf maid was below her balcony in the gardens, astride her horse.
"Mae govannen" she greeted the elf who as obviously at home as she was herself at Lorien or in the wide wilderness. She smiled, it had been a bit too long since she had been around those of her kind. Indeed, Haldir of the Lorien Guard often teased her about forgetting about how to be a proper elf.
"Shall I come down and join you? Maybe you would be kind enough to show me around the grounds, unless you were about to retire...?"
She almost wished she hadn't spoken other than a greeting. It had been too long since she had been among others. She sometimes felt out of place... though she had no one to blame but herself. She chose wandering, it had not chosen her.
Work with his usual employers was getting hard to come by. Thane had managed to run off most, if not all, his clients in the western region. it was never a question of whether or not he got the job done, merely that the price for hiring Thane often came with complications. More complications than anyone was willing to deal with these days. Thane spent the last two weeks looking for work as anything, not just a sword for hire. When nothing promising turned up, he mounted his horse and headed north.
It would do him some good to be home again. His mind traveled to a soft bed and a warm meal, as his steed's jarring trot threw knots into his back. Taking a break from the front line would be best for him, or so he tried to convince himself. Thane stopped at the gates of Imladris and looked onward. It had been at least two decades since he had last been home. A mirth filled smirk found its way across his lips as he wondered if anyone actually remembered him. This was obviously not the case, as the elves had long memories.
He kicked his mount into an excited canter and charged down the lane.The sooner he could get off that horse, the better.
When he finally dismounted at the stables, Thane wondered breifly to himself where he should head off to first. It was only midday, and habit alone would not allow rest. He had eaten in the saddle and it was still far too early for a drink. On his way up to the main hall, something caught Thane's eye. The blacksmith!
Thane had once had a friend who was hoping to become an apprentice. He hadn't seen Sirion in the longest time, and was not at all sure if the ellon was still around. As if it was all the same, Thane shrugged and walked off after the blacksmith.
"Lord Tincdan," Thane said, clearing his throat as his stood in smithy doorway.
"What is your business?" the blacksmith asked, not looking up from his project.
"I seek Sirion Cemótar. Do you know him, sir?"
The blacksmith looked up. "Yes, I just sent him off. I'd imagine he's using his newfound freedom to find the best way to get himself killed." It was apparent that the ellon disapproved of something Sirion was doing, but as to what that was, Thane hadn't a clue.
"Would you know where I might find him?"
The ellon gave Thane directions to Sirion's living quarters and waved Thane away. Thane didn't much appreciate being sent off like a child, but he went where instructed to.
He came to a stop in front of his old friend's door and waited for a moment. Thane wondered how awkward this reunion might be, but eventually decided that he didn't care. Tentatively, he raised a hand and knocked.
Sirion opened up moments later, and it took a few moments for the ellon to recognize his friend.
"Suilad Sirion," Thane chuckled at the open mouthed ellon. "It would be a lie to say the years have been kind to you, my friend."
After the slight state of shock passed, Sirion clasped Thane by the forearm then pulled him into a hug. "Kind to me? More so than you, I wager. You reek!" Thane did a not too subtle lift of his arm and sniffed at himself. "Where have you been all this time? You fell off the map." Before he could give an answer, Sirion waved it away.
"Come, walk with me. Lord Elrond is having the meeting soon. I suppose that's what you're here for right? I don't know how he found you, but if anyone has some tricks up their sleeves, it's Elrond." Sirion chuckled, still a little surprised at the sudden arrival of his old friend. "It's been a long time, you know? I got my apprenticeship soon after you left, just made journeyman today. It's the only way I would be able to sign on to this adventure." As they walked they continued to talk back and forth, Sirion doing most of the talking.
Eventually, the two made it to the council hall and Sirion took a peek inside to see who all chose to come. There were a few faces he knew, but he could tell that they were there for advisement, not to hear about why this meeting was called.
"Looks like we might be the first ones here. Ten minutes with me and you're habits are already getting better!" he jibed. "I remember you couldn't be counted on to be on time for anything. Shall we grab a seat, or wait outside to see who all else is on the way first?" Sirion asked as he peered passed the double doors again. There probably wouldn't be much time to socialize once they went in, and he wasn't quite ready to sit and wait yet when a friend had just returned from a 20 year absence. They were a little early still, but the others would start showing up soon. It was not wise to make Lord Elrond wait.
"Mae govannen"
"Shall I come down and join you? Maybe you would be kind enough to show me around the grounds, unless you were about to retire...?"
Idhren stepped back, slightly surprised to get such a friendly response from the stranger.
"Of course, for Imladris is full of simple beauties, that all of us must experience at some point. Come, let us tour the grounds. You may stop whenever you must, for I see that you are not from here, and have traveled far." Idhren slid off Raella and stood beside him, waiting for the Elf to descend.
Ah, a new traveler was always of interest to Idhren. For Imladris was ancient in its descendants, and had few travelers come. There must be reason, thought Idhren. A reason unknown to her.
Mithennor made her way down where she supposed the elf maid to be. Her own attempts to be sociable surprised even her. So many years alone she supposed she normally looked fairly unapproachable.
As she made her way through the halls, she passed a few people, some of which were men, and wondered
"are they here for the council as well?" which was that afternoon, and she should not be late.
She blinked as she stepped outside and found herself by the maid who had introduced herself... and then she had no idea what to say. She smiled instead and hoped that her venturing out wasn't a mistake.
Idhren watched the woman approach her, and simply stand quietly, smiling.
She placed her hand on her shoulder as a sign of greeting, and bowed slightly. Then she carried on to speak furthur of the tour.
"Do you care for gardens? Let us go and walk there, for many beauties hide beneath the underbrush and mossy knolls." Idhren lead her horse down a cobble path that lead to an intersection where there stood a few statues and several paths, one of which led to the garden.
She heard the soft padding of Raella's hooves, and behind them a very light footed step of the young lady following her.
They were both silent during the tour of the grounds excepting when Idhren pointed something in particular out. Mithennor was grateful for that, and felt that she understood something unspoken.
They had stopped for a few minutes in one of the courtyards when Mithennor glanced at the shadows on the ground, seeing how small they had become. She turned to her hostess
"I am sorry if I have not been good company, I'm used to solitude or when I'm in the presence of others it is not normally in such settings. I am very thankful for your time and company. Sadly, I have a counsel which I have been called to.
But it shouldn't last all day, and when it's through, maybe you can show me around a bit more?"
she smiled and left, she hurried through the halls that she had visited not too long before and stopped outside the doors to the counsel chamber where two men stood.
Both had the look of travel and of life filled with labor about them, though one looked a bit more ragged around the edges than the other.
The first she had heard of in passing when she had arrived the night before; Thane or something similar. She managed to hear a bit more about his past with minimal inquiries. His mother was an Elven Lady of Imladris, though she had heard nothing of his father other than he was mortal, and Thane lived as a hired sword. The other she did not know, though with the build of his arms and the callouses of his hands, it was not hard to guess his occupation.
She paused and inclined her head towards them as she made her way to the chamber and sat, awaiting the start of the counsel. She knew vaguely of the situation, but was eager to be briefed on the full story, and the plan... if there was one.
Unaware that a meeting was even planned to take place, Sirion had to fill Thane in on a few details. Thane, who would have liked a couple days rest to relax his saddle sore muscles, decided that it would be best if he attended with Sirion. He was currently in need of work anyway. Far from bitter, Thane was content to simply catch up with his friend.
"They didn't even describe to you the nature of the summons?" Thane asked, looking for details that might guarantee him work.
Sirion shook his head. "Only that something needed to be moved."
This was welcome news for Thane. Guards were always a necessity on transporting jobs. The two quickly fell into silence when they were joined by two women. Thane glanced at Sirion, trying not to smirk. It was apparent that Sirion did not know either of the elves. "My ladies!" Thane said politely, falling into a respectful bow. "My name is Thane Duvale. How may I be of service to you?" Gently, he reached out to each elleth and softly kissed the back of their hands. He held the door to the conference room open.
Sirion jumped in quickly. "Forgive my friend! He has spent far too much time in the world of men, and quite obviously has forgotten himself."
The ladies introduced themselves as Idhrenniel and Mithennor before making their way into the next room.
"If somehow Lord Elrond has misplaced his sanity and allows you into his employ, the ladies may be traveling with us. Don't start anything Thane." Sirion scolded, though his expression was very much ammused.
"Relax Sirion," Thane replied, with a wave of his hand. "I mean no harm. Simply meant for a lark. I've spent too much time with stone cold soldiers. It seems there is no longer room for fun."
Sirion shook his head. With a sympathetic pat on the shoulder, Thane made his way to the back of the room. He knew well enough that he had been traveling for sometime and was not able to clean up before hand. As a courtesy to those gathered there, he sat near the open doorway.
The room had accumulated a diverse bunch. Elves from every profession it seemed had been invited. Some of the Dunedain had even shown up.
All we need now are dwarves, Thane thought to himself.
Thane was relieved to see that he was not the only one who had attended unkempt. Wanderers and freelancers alike, filtered in not long after his own arrival. One in particular sat near Thane and introduced himself as Aldaron. The two really didn't have any time to exchange pleansantries.
The room suddenly came to silence as Lord Elrond entered and invited all who gathered to sit.
"Friends and honored guests! I feel I must apologize for the summons most of you have recieved. But fear not. All will be made clear." Elrond Halfelven was known and respected by all who sat before him, and his audience hung on every word."I am in need of those willing to travel to the north. To the homelands of the Lossoth."
Scattered whispers fell across the room at mention of the solitary people.
"It is believed that the palantir of Amon Sul has been recovered. Stories of its disapperance are common. I would like to keep the ones of its discovery to a minimum. The Lossoth do not have the strength to keep it. Their leader calls for aid from all nations in hopes of being relieved of this burden. However, I fear all the attention that he has drawn will be his undoing. Messengers of the icemen took great risk in traveling so far and one of their number has, we believe, been taken captive. The enemy may well know of the troubles in the north, and it is cause for worry."
Thane cleared his voice when the Lord finally paused to let his message sink in. "Lord, if it is strength of arms you require, I willingly pledge myself."
Elrond looked a little confused over how it was Thane Duvale came to be back in his halls, but nodded just the same. "You should all realize the dangers of this venture. If the enemy has been alerted to our cause, travel will be slow. Think well before you answer, and not because your purse requires you to." He knew the freelancing type well enough. Most of those gathered were not their out of loyalty, and this worried the ellon.
Once the supplies had been made ready and stored Lindir was to take some time for himself until the day of the meeting. This was unfortunately not the case once again. A rider arrived the following day from Tharbad and spoke of orc troop movements in the far north. Lord Elrond wanting more of this valuable information called on Lindir to get it. A day later he rode out on what was thought to be a trip of a hundred leagues there and back. As it happened by the time he arrived the drifter had moved on south. With no one knowing the route this drifter was taking he choose to take the most obvious route to see if he could find this man.
By the time Lindir found the drifter he had made it as far as the heart of Dunland. He was a horseman and was going to Rohan to work at the "King's own Horse Stables". The man was not a drifter as everyone one had thought and he'd been in a hurry to make Rohan in good time. The man and the ellon made camp together and that night he told all he had heard of the goings on in the north. The fact that he had only heard of the orc movements and not witnessed them was troubling Lindir. Many false stories of goings on here and there were always about and none were taken too seriously. The man's name was Albreth. He was well educated, living in Mithlond of late but born and raised near Ethring in Western Gondor on a horse ranch. Lindir trusted Albreth's assurances that the information came from a trusted source that was not one to repeat unsubstantiated gossip.
Lindir, now short on time, left the following morning at a fast gallop.
He reached Imladris six days later and went straight to the meeting hall to join the meeting which was already in progress. He was somewhat surprised at the number of ellons but this was not his biggest surprise. From where he stood he could clearly see Thane Duvale.
Lindir's diplomatic position meant that he was on the road most of the time. He'd long heard of an elf who roamed middle earth doing work that was unheard of within the elven community. When complaints were voiced he never admitted to knowing this ellon or even where he came from. Thane was a loaner and it was uncharacteristic for him to return home. How could he have heard of this quest Lindir thought. He was about turn his attention to Lord Elrond when Thane looked at him. Both elves docked their heads in greeting before turning back to Lord Elrond. When the call came for volunteers Lindir wasted no time answering.
"I to shall pledge myself and my sword Lord Elrond."
Mithennor smiled a little to herself, briefly, upon the thought of having had her hand kissed. She had raised an eyebrow at the moment, but had not been offended as Sirion had supposed. Thane had made a point. There was too little laughter in the world.
Lord Elrond entered the room, and everything fell silent. All extraneous thoughts had left her mind immediately. The matter at hand was of a grave nature and not to be entered into lightly, and as Elrond confirmed the worst of what the Lady Galadriel had told her, she became somber. While it would only seem to affect the Losseth at this time, she knew as well as all elves and those with a mind towards the future that this was only a portend of ill that could bring much more pain to fruition in later years. Unless it was stopped now.
It was while on this thought that Mithennor saw another figure slip into the counsel chamber. Obviously the diplomat from Imladris, Lindir. They fulfilled a similar post, though Lindir's position was more dignified and bit more structured, for lack of a better term, than was hers. And he was just as displeased at something he saw. Undoubtedly a 'someone' though without twisting in her seat, she could not be certain, but she had a fair bit of certainty in whom she thought it might be.
And then the silence broke again. Lord Elrond asking for those who would willingly join the cause. Without a seeming second thought to it, Thane was the first to pledge himself to the cause. Mithennor was surprised, though not as surprised as either Elrond or Lindir, who also accepted the call.
She slowly stood.
"I shall go, and I shall see the task and journey through to the end, whatever it may be- by life or my death if so called for"
Lord Elrond gave her a long look. Others might not know it, but she knew it came from her Lady's wishes that she discontinue. Evidently Elrond had similar feelings. But after so long, she felt as if there were no recourse left for her. Even if that weren't the case, she knew she would be needed, and she felt the need to aid some greater cause.
Idhren caught a giggle in her throat as the strange man softly kissed her hands. She caught up with Mithennor and strode into the solemn room. She caught a seat next to a tall, serious looking Elf with a crown of golden hair, and sat down as quietly as she could. He gave her a small side glance, then looked away quickly as she returned the gaze.
As Lord Elrond entered the room, all fell into a deadly silence. She sat perfectly still and straight in her seat as she listened to all that arose from Elrond.
She watched warily as the elf that had kissed her hand, rose and pledged himself to the cause. Then she craned her neck and saw that Mithennor rose and gently spoke of her intention to pledge herself as well.
Naught is hindering me... I may as well...
Idhren stood up quickly, and spoke in a clear, sound voice that rang like molten silver.
"I too wish to go. If you will have me, I will not waver in my path; I shall see this task to its end." All eyes turned on Idhrenniel, standing tall and graceful, determined, and true.
She was to go, no matter what they said.
Still slightly mortified by Thane's actions, Sirion took his seat slightly numb. His mind raced. Thane had always been slightly outlandish, an un-conformist even. Sirion remembered that plainly now that his friend had returned after such a long absence. He certainly hadn't changed. He could already see the others, throwing Sirion's lot in with Thane. It could be quite the smudge on his record if he were to try to form a reputation, being the friend of one cultured to the world of men.
The thoughts had to wait as Elrond stood and began addressing the assembly. The details of the mission were astounding. One of the lost Palintiri, found. All they had to do was retrieve it, but things seldom were that simple, let alone when it deals with one of the more powerful magic’s in all the realms. The Lossoth were naïve to think that calling on all nations for help will only attract the honest sort of folk. It could be that even now the forces of darkness may be holding their own council; a twisted shadow of the one taking place here, in Imlandris.
For a few idle moments Sirion entertained the thoughts of meeting a group of more unsavory characters running into this group, both heading for the same goal. the only difference between the two would be motive.
As Elrond finished his speech, some of the gathered began voicing their intentions to take up the journey. Thane was first, of course, Sirion thought. The half-elf had always craved adventure. It was why he had left in the first place. Thane left for adventure years ago, while Sirion stayed and apprenticed himself to begin a career. He had always assumed it had been the part of Thane that was human that made him loathe to establish roots anywhere.
Sirion had at first wanted to attend this meeting because he himself had felt an urge to adventure, much as Thane probably had earlier in life. The thought made him pause, and almost smile. If he wanted adventure like Thane, what else might he want like him. It made him wonder how alike the two of them really could be.
He realized now though, that it wasn't adventure driving him. It was duty. The elves had a duty to recover the missing Palintir, because if they didn't then something else would. Sirion stood, his back straight and legs set.
"I too pledge my sword and my life to this task." The others looked at him, some giving nods of approval, others confusion. Word of his release of servitude had not been widely spread yet, and many wondered why he was at the meeting at all. "My master has released me from my bondage, and I am willing to dedicate myself entirely to this quest." he finished to the more confused looking overseers. Sirion took his seat next to Thane again, the half-elf giving him a prompt slap on the back.
"Better late than never, Sirion my friend." Thane teased. "The open road is a finer instructor than any master." He noticed that while Sirion was excited about the journey, the ellon seemed nervous about Thane's words. He shrugged off the thought.
The meeting came to a standstill as few in the audience fumbled with their options. Even some of the more weathered wanderers Elrond had invited gave pause. There was nothing about the situation to take lightly, especially since there were new reports of orc movement. So far it was set upon the five volunteers to take on the road. The elven lord surmised that either this group was foolhardy, or completely perfect to suit his needs. A handful of elves would move much faster than a battalion. He only worried that he had not expressed the severity of the issue at hand as well as he could.
"Very well," the Lord finally said. "I will need all willing to aide the north to stay." There was no point in leaking extra information to those who would not go.
The room slowly filered down till it was only the five elves left.
"I have already sent troops ahead to secure your road along our borders up to thirty leagues out, but I fear that is all the help I can give you. Your horses will not last long in the north, I would advise turning them back while still in the foothills." he continued grimly. "There is also something to be said from our newest patrol." the ellon nodded at Lindir who unrolled a map and started pointing out orc movement and hideouts.
Thane preferred to be the braun and not the brains of the operation, and so his mind wandered during the lecture. He had nothing against Lindir, in fact he quite hoped to head to the pub with Sirion and the ellon after this meeting was over. But whether it was his occupation or simply his nature that required him to do so, Lindir really could drag things out. Thane's lack of interest did not go unnoticed by anyone in the group, and it was apparent that he was the only one missing the seriousness of the issue.
Elrond continued the mission briefing when Lindir had finished. "I would also advise that you remain until morning. Till then you are all invited to dine with me tonight."
That got Thane's attention, who had dropped in weight on his travels. "Thank you, my lord." He said with a smile, as the five stood to leave.
Mithennor and the others who had taken up the quest moved from thier seats around the council to situate themselves around a table, where Elrond then laid out a map.
Rumors of orc movements without actually having been seen. All that was left was the evidence that they had been there. This did not bode well, neither did the fact that most of this journey would be on foot. She was no stranger to hard journeys, but listening to the reports almost made it sound impossible to even get northward without either having to move at a snail's pace or engaging in some form of battle and there being only 5 of them... One of them, she glanced at Idhren, she wasn't too sure was all that experienced in sword play or battle. And perhaps the most experienced, she looked up at Thane, wasn't paying attention.
Elrond and Lindir probably could have sentenced him to death, provided they didn't change their tone of voice and Thane would not have known. The only time he showed the slightest interest was at the end of the meeting when Elrond invited them to his private table.
Mithennor realized she had been glaring at him, and had two thoughts came to mind: either they would become close -or- she was going to be perpetually tempted to knock him off his horse. Which would probably only make him laugh which would serve only to frustrate her more. She sighed to herself as she rose to leave.
She was debating now, what to do with the hours between now and dinner with Lord Elrond. Absorbed in her thoughts, she left without a particular path in mind
(OOC I use Canadian/UK English so there will be some spelling differences')
Lindir could be a cold legalistic diplomatic prat and he knew it. Many months with nothing else but work and travel had made it difficult for him to unwind and see the lighter side of life, but things were going to change, nothing would stop him from going on this mission. Lord Elrond was talking to him but Lindir kept looking up at the others trying to size up the two elleth who he didn't know. But there was a better way to do that.
Elrond was done and finally left his warriors to themselves and Lindir went to join the others. He called to the elleth he would know as Mithennor who was leaving the hall.
"Please wait and stay a moment." He called out to her as he joined the others. "I believe for the moment our time is our own. I would be pleased if you all would join me in my residence for a goblet of mead or something stronger perhaps. We can talk more freely there than in any of these rooms. Thane you will be pleased to know that by chance I brought with me a small travelling keg of ale from Tharbad only this morning."
Introductions were made and Lindir's offer was accepted. The walk to his quarters took about 15 minutes. He had long ago requested and was given approval to have his home away from the daily comings and goings from Lord Elrond's halls. This was his private space where he could take rest from the cares of his duties for the three Eldar realms in Middle Earth. His home was not lavish but there were many relics from the different kingdoms of men which over time had been given to him. There were some peculiar items and several horns among the collection. He designed his home for comfort and it was comfortable. He did not take his meals here but there was always some small provision of food in his home whenever he would return to Imladris from one of his missions abroad. The young ellon Rúmil always made sure of this and was always rewarded for his efforts. On their walk Lindir fell in beside Thane to have a quiet word with him.
"Believe it or not I am pleased to see you. I've had to deny your existence and any knowledge of you several times of late Thane. Your exploits are becoming known of in the higher circles of the human realms. You have not threatened any of the alliances we have with the kingdoms of men and for that I thank you. Though I believe that was merely by chance. Be careful my friend for rumours of who you truly are abound. Though they are far from the mark. We have wandered our own roads to long my friend and I'm pleased that we once again find ourselves on the same path."
Sirion was with the ladies as was the norm. He gracefully opened the door and waved them through. Once inside and after a few awkward moments everyone sat back and made themselves comfortable. Inside his home the distinctly studious elven manners Lindir lived by seemed to fall by the wayside. Whether this was customary because he was in his own home or deliberate to this occasion Lindir would not have known. It may have been a holdover from his days as a young ellon growing up with Thane and his rebellious nature. Life had drawn them into two different directions, and then there was Sirion.
After the first round Lindir set out the ale, wine and mead on a small table and asked his guest to feel free and help themselves. This is when the ice broke and the conversation began to flow easier. Lindir, as far as he knew, was the only one of them to have travelled in the far north with the Dúnedain and had met the Lossoth tribes several times. He knew them to be a peaceful people with a deep knowledge of the lands and the history of them. In spite of its dangers he looked forward to this expedition and was curious of why the two elleth chose to join, so he simply asked.
"Have either of you ever journeyed to the northern lands?"
"Have either of you ever journeyed to the northern lands?"
Idhren's gaze flicked towards the Ellon, as she narrowed her eyes, and then she glanced back at her untouched plate of food.
"Yes, my lord. Many a year ago. I am fully equipped and skilled in battle. You need not worry."
She returned her gaze back to his golden head of hair and smiled slightly. Ah, the things they all had to learn about one another.
Idhren could tell many, if not all, were wary that she had not any skill in battle. Oh, how she would shock them all.
Lindir smiled. It seemed that things may have gotten off on the wrong foot for he had intended no slight but only wish to know who of the group knew the type of lands they would be travelling.
"Forgive me for I was in no way questioning your abilities. The Lord Elrond would not have allowed anyone to be at the conference that was in anyway unskilled. By accepting you into this expedition we all know that your abilities are second to none. The summons was only sent to those who could fulfil the Lord Elrond's expectations. I asked only because the lands to which we go are flat, mostly barren, wet and have no cover. Our horses will have to be sent back once we have covered only half the distance and from there we must walk. Within the last five days I have spoken with a man who has a good knowledge of the northern lands and he told me of orc companies that have arrived at Carn Dum and of scouts far afield in the lands beyond Carn Dum. We may not be the only one the Lossoth asked for aid and news of the Palantíri may have travelled far afield. The Dunedin told us of the capture of one Lossoth by a orc scouting company. If he told his capturers of the Palantíri it will then be a race. We will certainly find ourselves challenged by the lands and orcs also."
Mithennor hesitated for a moment before accepting Lindir’s invitation. She and the rest of the group followed him to, what she assumed correctly, where his private quarters. Once there, the rest of the group relaxed, even she did- to a certain extent. She settled herself onto a small couch and accepted a glass of wine. This was to be the last night of comfort for any foreseeable future and she was going to enjoy it.
"Have either of you ever journeyed to the northern lands?"
Idhren gave her response, almost a little heatedly, but if everyone assumed that she had little or no skill, Mithennor supposed she would be a mite bit defensive as well.
"my Lady Galadriel had me visit the area once, many, many years ago, to advise them since there were dark stirrings on thier borderlands. I have not been back since. It was beautiful if I recall... if not stark. Though my heart longs to Lothlorien, there was something in the glittering ice and snow that caught my eye. I am glad to be going back, though I do wish it were for another purpose."
she tucked her feet up under her legs and took a small sip from her glass.
"so what brings you on this quest?"
Thane was slightly shocked to hear that the two elleths had travelled so far north before. He was supposed to be the adventurous one. The one who willingly traversed the uncertain road for the simple fact that he could. Thane had never been to the north before. War was not as rampant there as it was in the more heavily populated places of the world, and so there was never a need for Thane to go. Though he spent much of his time south of Imladris, the ellon had also found that he had a distinct dislike for the cold. It was something he had come to blame on his sire. He unknowlingly scowled into his mug as he helped himself to another round of ale. His only form of consulation was that Sirion had never really been anywhere. Or so he was led to believe. Thane chose to leave out the fact that his knowlege of their destination was lacking. He also decided it was best not to mention his hate for winter's chill. Bringing up his parentage in any conversation always made him uncomfortable, unless it was in jest. He was half an elf, not half a man. Though either way he looked at it, the title still felt crippling in most societies.
His mood soured whenever he was left to his own thoughts, so he jumped, unanouced, right into the conversation.
"Knowing Lindir," Thane said, cutting the ellon off from answering Mithennor. "It may have something to do with that high formal collar he wears so well." Thane sat upright and imitated many of the mannerisms he had been force fed as a young child. He chuckled to himself and took another sip of his drink. Ale really did bring out the worst in Thane, and for the sake of the ladies present he decided that this would be his last glass of the evening.
He finished his glass and turned it upside down, indicating that he was done. "Although, were we to convince him to finish the keg he was so graciously provided, I'm quite sure you will meet a Lindir that willingly forsakes diplomacy." Thane, always one to break the ice, didn't know enough about the ladies to pick on them, so he stuck with the ellon.
Sirion indeed hadn't been out of the area much. Hearing all the others recount of how far they have traveled and what adventures they had had was slightly intimidating. He had always lived in Imlandris, his business had never taken him anywhere else. He could fight though, his master thought it would be unwise to make swords for a living and not be able to swing them with any skill. He could hunt as well. Sirion would often haunt the surrounding forests for wild game and even go along the outskirts to hunt down the occasional marauding band of unsavories.
When Thane began to speak, Sirion began to worry that the ellon would alienate himself from the group, and they hadn't even set out yet! Clearing his throat to draw attention from Thane, who now held every gaze in the room, Sirion began to speak "I must admit, none of my prior experience has led me out of Imlandris much, but I am quite skilled. Should any of you need maintenance on weapons or armor, I will repair it for you."
He swirled the last bit of drink in his mug then lifted it in a spontaneous toast. "To our mission, may we move swifter than our enemies." There were some concurring comments as the glasses clinked together.
Lindir smiled and shook his head. The human half of Thane was never able to say no to a drink, his human half always fell under the influence of alcohol and he did not hold his liquor well, which was the tale the dwarves had told him. Were he to guess why Thane had chosen his life style Lindir would have blamed his human half again. After the toast Lindir sat on the edge of his chair and put his empty glass down.
"My collar may be high and to tight but I would still choose diplomacy over the shedding blood and planting the seeds of unrest. The battle on the flanks of Orodruin is still clear in my mind and that day I chose to do what I could to keep the peace and Lord Elrond choose to do the same, I became his ambassador if you like. Though, admittedly, at times peace can only be achieved by using the sword. Where does one draw the line? Death is not a business to us, but one can bargain to prevent it " Lindir looked directly at Thane
"You ask why I go Mithennor. Very well, for over two thousand years I have watched as the might of Gondor grew in peace and then it slowly began to decay. There was war, civil war, the plague and the line of the Kings in the south ended. The enemy always there, watching each move and waiting to strike. The skirmishes, the political dance if you will but it will come to a fight some day, I see little point in running about telling them what they already know. I don't wish to go south for they don't want us there. They want none of our foresight though we offer it freely, I feel there is little point in discussion when council is not welcomed. In spite of this we must not allow the enemy to get the seeing stone. If they were the sky would darken with smoke and carrion foul would fly thick over head, then our own lands and people would be under threat. To prevent it we will shed blood, orc blood, and that I find satisfying anytime. May the Valar guide our steps and our swords."
Mithennor raised her glass to the toast and drained the rest of her glass. The traveling party was a diverse bunch, and she was curious to see how thier relationships would play into the dynamic.
Thane with an air of... not quite recklessness, but close to. Sirion hovering in an attempt to forestall some disaster. Lindir had the quite air of one well aware of the world's pain. And there was Idhren, who was turning out to be more and more of a surprise. Pleasantly so. Wonder what they thought of her? They were obviously surprised she was so well traveled. Which she couldn't blame them for.
there was a quiet knock on the door and another elf announced that Lord Elrond's table was laid. They rose and made thier way to dinner, Mithennor found herself once more towards the back of the group.
Anxious to start moving again, Thane jumped up at the sight of the messenger. "At last!" he muttered to himself. The group quickly gathered up their things and left for the lord's table. It wasn't that Thane enjoyed being a freeloader, simply that he was often denied the opportunity. If a quick meal was involved that wasn't going to attempt to run away from his poor archery skills, the ellon was not going to pass it up. Remembering his reluctantly aquired manners would be a bit of a challenge, but he always managed.
The young messenger walked in front of the group as if they somehow needed guiding. Thane gave a derisive sniff at this gesture and took it upon himself to excuse the outsider. He disliked being walked like a prisoner.
"I'm sure we can find our way if you have other duties to attend to," Thane grumbled, turning a harsh scowl on the boy.
The young ellon faltered under the request, confused about the quality of his service. The dark haired ellon had seemed pleased with his presence earlier. "Yes, my lord," he said politely and changed his direction. The boy had never known an ellon to trigger mood as fast as this one did and he wanted no part of Thane.
Sirion and Lindir exchanged glances at Thane's behavior. The half-elf was known for spontaneity, but his demeanor was off. That was not the Thane they knew. Perhaps he was just tired? The issue was dropped, hoping this was the case.
~
Dinner went smoothly with a lack of outburst from Thane. This was his own contribution to the group. He wanted to be civil when needed and the easiest way was for Thane was to keep his mouth shut.
They discussed details of the journey, things they'd need, places they should avoid and how they should proceed if some other nation beat them there. Thane would leave relations in Lindir's hands, or at least he would try to. Ultimately, the journey would have to be taken one day at a time due to the ever changing situation. The group was advised to rest up and leave as early as possible on their way out the door.
Thane stayed in Sirion's quarters for the night on a small cot. He was more than thankful that he was not sleeping on the ground. Despite his apparent comfort, full of food and drink and weary from his recent travels, Thane continued his nightly routine of terrors. He rolled and thrashed on the cot, occasionally letting out a yelp that would guarantee Sirion a sleepless night.
Mithennor rose early that morning to finish packing, though she didn't have much to do since she hadn't really unpacked since arriving at Imladris only a few days prior.
She wrapped the dress and the combs that she had worn in her hair carefully in a small bag and left a note that she would be back to retrieve them. The dress, while she liked it, she wouldn't be upset if it were to be ruined, but her mother's combs she didn't want to risk.
She finished getting ready rather hurriedly at that point, she sat down to pull on her knee-high boots. When she was dressed, she went about her favorite and least favorite task of arming herself. One dagger in each boot, another on the inside of her upper left arm, and yet another on the small of her back. The most cleverly hidden one was one that she kept down the front of her shirt, hidden between her breasts. Only 3 men had ever seen it, and none had survived it. It was something of a last measure.
Once satisfied that none were visible, she strapped her poniards across her shoulders and donned her cloak, which had been altered so that the handles of each of the poniards were easily accessible.
It was the grey cloak that her people were known for, but her broach was different from the others; instead of the green leaf veined with silver, hers consisted of two leaves entwining one another; one gold veined with silver and the other silver veined with gold. Together they held a green stone. She loved it, and it kept a piece of home near her heart regardless of how far from home she was, or how long.
Mithennor left her room and headed down to the courtyard where the others were surely already gathering. Before she got much closer, she took a few very long steps, enjoying the feeling of not being encumbered by a dress any longer.
When she got to the courtyard, most of the others were already there, as were their horses. Telperin, her own mare, stood off to the side, waiting to be packed. She slung her bag across the mare's back and stroked Telperin's nose.
Someone was walking towards her, she wasn't as of yet familiar with everyone to tell who is was;
"So, ready to be off this morning?" she turned around.
Idhren sat and stroked her covers listlessly thinking about the day ahead and the journey that she was to embark on.
A restless night was had by her, and the next day she woke up ill rested and in a somber mood.
She gathered her things, stacking them neatly in a pile beside her horses stall. Then she began to groom him, gently and surely getting all the dust and dirt off his coat making him shine.
She cooed and stroked his mane, and gently slipped on the bit-less bridle.
His hooved made a hollow sound on the stable ground as she looked ahead of her, chin high and head poised to the left.
Ahead of her was a tall figure, and in front of the tall figure was Mithennor. The figure asked a question, and Idhren watched as Mithennor turned around.
Idhren stopped in her tracks and watched as the figure drew closer to her.
Someone Idhren had spoke very little with, she was curious to see him here, speaking with Mithennor.
"So, ready to be off this morning?" she [Mithennor] turned around.
"Certainly my lady," Thane said with a yawn, and mounted his horse. He shifted uncomfortably in the saddle, turning side to side in attempt to stretch his sore muscles. The mare beneath Thane side stepped rigidly beneath him at the ellon's incessant figiting, but he paid no mind. "I trust everyone is well rested?" he looked toward Idhren as he said this, trying to include her in the conversation. She seemed distant and it annoyed Thane to no end. He wanted to know his allies and their limitations, if any.
The ladies replied that they were, and mounted up following Thane's example.
Lindir took point and Thane was more than happy to see it. In all honesty, he had no knowlege of the north and no desire to pretend to lead. Sirion followed behind him.
"After you ladies," Thane said, turning his mount to the side allowing the elleths to pass.
The lord Elrond came breifly to offer last minute advice and words of parting, but it wasn't long before the party was charging out the gates and into the wild.
After a somewhat restless night, Sirion awoke slightly disgruntled. Thane had been one of the more annoying room mates in his experiences. The ellon could remember when it seemed like the half-elf could sleep deeper than anyone he knew. Deciding that only one day and a night after years of absence wasn't enough to make them close enough yet, Sirion did not bring up what had happened yet. With a light sigh, the ellon forgot about the incident.
"I have a few more things to do before we leave, so I'll see you when it's time to depart." Sirion said briskly as he clapped Thane on the back then hurried out the door. After a few errands to make sure his estates were in order and that those that needed to know, knew he would be departing for an unspecified time and did not know when he might return.
The last stop the elf made was to the smithy. As he approached he could already see smoke billowing out of the large chimney and could hear the pinging of a hammer on steel. He entered the badly lit building and bowed respectfully to his former master. The older ellon nodded to him then hammered a blade a few more times before quenching it in a bucket. Sirion waited patiently. After what seemed like a few more minutes, the master blacksmith walked to the back of the shop then came out with Sirion's finished blade. He was wiping the blade down with oil and buffing the mirrored steel with a fine soft cloth.
In what Sirion thought was the most ceremonial manner he had ever seen the gruff elf use, he presented the sword to him, hilt first. "You expect me to say some theological message about your life, but I won't. Just don't be a fool out there, fools and heroes get killed before they get famous. Keep your head on straight. If you don't come back I'll take it that I wasted my time in apprenticing you." He said, his hard eyes boring into the younger smith-turned-adventurer. "I made you this, also. Seeing as you got too busy to do it yourself. Call it a final gift for making it through my lessons."
The master smith pulled a scabbard off the wall then and presented it to Sirion as well. It was not overly ornate, definitely function over form. The whole length was hardwood and tightly wrapped in dark leather, with a silver cap on the end and small veins of metal running the length with leaves branching off at every few inches. The top was also capped in metal, also silver with matching designs as the hilt and crosspiece of the sword that fit into it. When the two were combined, the seam between the two pieces seemed to disappear, the designs wrapping together to complete each other.
After more bowing and even grasping each other’s forearms, Sirion strapped the scabbard to his belt and slid the sword into its new home. After he left the building, he waited a few seconds before he left. Not before long he heard the familiar pinging start up again and grinned, the master was back to work.
He arrived to the group just in time, his horse already loaded with his supplies. As they all mounted up, Elrond came out to reiterate the important details then sent them on their way. An order was quickly assumed with Lindir leading the party. The group had to stick to a single file line as they moved through the trees, so there was little talk amongst the group. It wasn't too long before they broke from the forest and they were free to ride side by side. Sirion moved next to Thane.
"So what all did you do while you were away? Surely you saw some exciting things, more than me anyways. I've been in a smithy this whole time, aside from the standard training and the like, but you remember that."
Thane chuckled. "Well if you must know, I've learned that on your first day out you need to forget everything standard training has taught you about survival. Unless of course it includes food, be mindful of those lessons only." The ellon had often been told that he had the appetite of a surly dwarf, though his intake of meat was not nearly as high.
Sirion frowned. Obviously this was not the answer he was looking for. Thane scratched his chin absently and took a moment to recall something that might satisfy his friend. "I have been many places... some of which I'm sure would be better told by Lindir. Adventure has it's drawbacks." Sirion still looked unhappy and Thane let out a laugh. "You will see what I mean. I don't know if you realize this, Master silversmith, but you are literally on your own way to starting a few tales."
"Besides! Mithennor and Idrenniel both seem better traveled than I. Perhaps it is best that they do the story telling." Thane turned and grinned at the ladies, who both seemed annoyed with the sight of him. Perhaps for the sake of being polite, the ladies each described their occupations. However, Sirion's thirst for information was not slaked by off handed tales.
Thane shook his head. Most men, or in the case of their group women, became wanderers because they disliked their past and did not want to be badgered by others about it. If Sirion couldn't learn that quick, Thane would have to keep an eye on him. Chances were he'd badger the wrong person.
As promised by the Lord Elrond, the way was cleared for the group just out of the elven borders. They made good time and Thane felt as if he would die from boredom. But the farther they traveled, the more often Lindir would offer warnings against Thane's loud complaints. As the evening drew near, the ellon found that to obey was all he really could do, and it soured his mood. At a signal from Lindir, the group spread out within shouting distance in search of safe keeping for everyone before there was no longer any light to do so.
Mithennor rode at the rear of the group, it allowed her to watch everyone and to spend time with her own thoughts. Idhren and Lindir also seemed to be keeping to themselves, and Sirion and Thane were catching up. Something was seemed to be bothering Sirion, but she let that thought pass... She was enjoying the day, the weather was pleasant and her cloak was fairly unnecessary and took it off and laid it on the saddle in front of her, as she did so she also stretched and started to hum to herself...
At some point she was brought back to where she really was, Thane had brought them up and was asking questions. She didn’t mean to be cross, but she wasn’t terribly fond of being startled. Though she chided herself having lost track of things.
“Officially I’m known as the Wanderer of Lothlorien, and it’s my task to bring tidings and news to My Lord and Lady, but also to aid and give assistance when and where needed, which is what brings me here. But, as I’m sure Lindir can tell you, when out and about, titles mean precious little. Sometimes it gets to be wearysome, but... I find it hard to stay still. I had lost my parents not too long after my Essecilmë, and I became Galadriel’s ward for a time, but she wasn’t too fond of my running off, when I was older, I just left. I can scarcely recall why, only that I wanted to be rid of where I was, even if just for a time, but I fell in love with being anyplace and nowhere and sleeping under the sky. When I came back, I guess it was apparent that I had intention of returning to my flet for any length of time.
So she gave me a title, a task, and sent me on my way.” She paused a moment before adding “and I’m sorry if I ever seem offputting, I’m fairly unused to company, having spent the majority of my life thus far solitary”
