In 2510 of the Third Age, Eorl, Lord of the Éothéd 2501-2510 and first King of Rohan 2510-2545, answered a summons for aid from Cirion (twelfth Ruling Steward of Gondor). Eorl and his Riders rode south from their then home near the sources of the Anduin in the far north to aid Cirion against the Balchoth (a tribe of Easterlings). After winning the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, the Riders of the Éothéd were granted what was from then on known as Rohan.

Baldor, the doomed son of Brego ( ..... the man, not PJ's made-up horse)

He tried the Paths of the Dead, though he had been told that the way was shut to him. His bones were found long years afterward by Aragorn and his company.

A Silvan Elf who, at least according to legend, accompanied Nimrodel on her journey to the southern havens. Mithrellas, it is said, became lost in the woods of Belfalas, where she was found by Imrazôr the Númenórean. So Elvish blood entered the line of the Princes of Dol Amroth, it was claimed, since her son Galador was the first of the long line of Princes.

Tradition said that after the birth of her two children, Mithrellas disappeared one night, and was never seen again. Her ultimate fate remains unknown, though it is possible she attempted to follow her mistress Nimrodel on the long journey into the West.

Harry Goatleaf was the gatewarden at the West gate in Bree. He sided with Bill Ferny and the strangers during the 'troubles', and was suspected of letting the gangrels in. It is probable that he also let in the Black Riders that attacked the inn when the hobbits were staying there.

A family of Hobbits in the Shire, two of whom were lawyers of a sort in the Shire company of Grubb, Grubb, and Burrowes who were supervising the auction of the presumed-dead Bilbo Baggins's effects just as Bilbo came back to put a (belated) stop to the proceedings.

Tricky, Gando ...

Tar-Míriel aka Nimriyê - The daughter of King Tar-Palantir, whom the laws of Númenórean succession would have made her father's Heir, and therefore the fourth Ruling Queen of Númenor. On Tar-Palantir's death, however, her cousin Pharazôn forced her into marriage, and took the Sceptre of Númenor for himself, becoming known as Ar-Pharazôn the Golden.

Another one from my Schneidewind lexicon, not in Foster. Bell, Quenya, end of entry. (SNARL! Text formatting doesn't work either!)

The greatest river of western Beleriand. Flowed into Sirion at Tasarinan.

The form Lórinand was also rendered in Quenya as Laurenandë and in Sindarin as Glornan or Nan Laur, all of the same meaning. Other, later names given to the land included the much later Rohirric name Dwimordene (from dwimor "phantom", an allusion to the perceived magic of the Elves), and the Westron name The Golden Wood which the Galadhrim called Lothlórien or Lórien.

Caused by Gollum's fall into the chasm of Sammath Naur with the One Ring, destroying a vast part of Sauron's power and therefore annihilating the foundations of Barad-dûr, which was not achieved at the end of the Second Age because Isildur refused to destroy the One Ring then.

An Elf of the Nandor who went to dwell in Doriath at the court of Thingol after the First Battle. When Túrin came to that land, he and Saeros became enemies: it was the accidental death of Saeros at Túrin's hands that drove the son of Húrin to become an outlaw.

The title inscribed on the tall grey stone that marked Túrin's burial mound by Cabed Naeramarth above the swirling waters of Teiglin. Carved in the Runes of Doriath, they commemorated his heroic slaying of the dragon Glaurung - Dagnir Glaurunga means 'Bane of Glaurung'.

A name in Quenya for Númenor after its Downfall, meaning simply 'The Downfallen'.

[This should confuse the issue for you, Ireth:

In the first drafts of the genealogy, Finwë had four sons: the youngest was named Finrun, but he was dropped after that, thus Finrod (later Finarfin) was Finwë's youngest son from then on. In a later version Finwë had three daughters by Indis, Findis (as their first child) Faniel (as their third), and Finvain (as their youngest). In yet later versions, Faniel was apparently dropped, while Findis and Finvain were kept. Finvain (renamed Írimë) was moved to Fingolfin, thus Finarfin was once again the youngest child of Finwë.]

An immense beech-tree that grew close to the gates of Menegroth, the underground capital of King Thingol. Its original name seems to have been Neldor, meaning 'triple-tree' because of its three tall straight trunks. It is a mark of the tree's fame that its name ultimately became the Sindarin word for 'beech', from which was named the entire forest of Neldoreth, where it grew.

A highland region to the northeast of Dorthonion. It was held briefly as a fief by the House of Bëor, but lost to Morgoth in the Dagor Bragollach.

The region of Ladros seems originally to have been a fief of Finrod Felagund (at least, his brothers Angrod and Aegnor held 'the northern slopes of Dorthonion', according to Quenta Silmarillion 14, Of Beleriand and its Realms). Finrod later assigned this land to Boromir of the House of Bëor, whose members had long been loyal in his service.

Dírhavel was a Man who lived among the exiles and refugees at the Havens of Sirion at the time of Eärendil.

He was a poet, though he only produced a single lay, the longest to come out of Beleriand. Written in Sindarin, it drew on the knowledge and memories of the peoples living in the lands around the Havens. Titled Narn i Chîn Húrin, (the Tale of the Children of Húrin), it told the story of Morgoth's curse on Húrin's children Túrin and Niënor, and the heroic tragedy that emerged from that curse.

Dírhavel was killed during the attack that was made on the Havens by the sons of Fëanor.
