Yes, tarc, it is. We have too many people in a semi-desert climate and hence, when there is a drought, all the stuff planted around homes acts like tinder. Worse, we have fire bugs (arson) who get off on setting fires near homes to watch them burn along with idiots who think it's okay to start a signal fire if they're lost in the woods - this is not the Northwest or the upper Midwest with wet forests, but scrub brush and tons of dry, tinder-like plants. A fire starts, the winds blow, and voila! You have a blaze that can consume hundreds and thousands of acres of land, including homes and businesses... sometimes, lives are lost as well, both homeowners and putting firefighters in awful danger.

On a totally different subject, the only time I have any sort of motion sickness was when my mother and I were on board a 60 foot ketch in Tahiti. It was during the day and we were between Tahaa and Bora Bora, getting fried topside so we decided to go below. Wrong thing to do. So queasy! Went back topside and covered up as best we could. The captain got us some food and our stomachs settled down. It was a lesson well-learned.

Get you, with your 60 foot ketch. Heh!

Life goes on. My mum got told off by the urology specialist for drinking too much. Her legs were swollen, poor kidney function. The thing is, all the other nurses and doctors had been saying "Are you drinking enough?" which she translated as "Drink more". But he backed up what I'd been trying to tell her, so that's good.

Bro and sis-in-law had a wonderful holiday here. They're now in Italy and then Austria. Alright for some innit?

Must, MUST recommend visiting the Dales of Yorkshire if ever you're in England. Wharfedale and Littondale truly are magical, difficult to convey. No Elves but loads of oystercatchers (birds), which was unexpected. So beautiful it's nearly too much to bear. cirdaneth will say the same about the Derbyshire Peak district. Similar magic. Oh my! Isn't life just.... well, you get the picture.

Also loads of paragliders in Littondale jumping off from the ridge. The sky was full of them. It's the names on the map which get me. Place names are always the most ancient. They don't change over the ages, and the Ordnance Survey maps are the best in the world (no kiddin'). Hawkswick Clowder, Dowkabottom Cave, Wassa Laithe. What's not to like? Straight in to Middle Earth. I would happily lay my soul to rest in such a place.

Yeah well, enough of that mawkish nonsense. Good will to all and have a happy forevermore.

Always wanted to visit the UK, tarc, all of it. Doubtful that I will now, but I would love to stand on the moors and visit the countryside. Remember reading the descriptions of the Lake Country as well as the Dales and thinking how beautiful they must be. Sorry to hear about your mother, but totally understand her confusion. Sometimes we have to really watch how we couch our questions and recommendations in the medical community.

Hello I am back. I got home late Monday night. I had a wonderful visit with son and grandchildren. I am glad to be home but I am always so tired when I come back takes about 2 days to recover.
Dimple sorry about the flooding and the frustration. Glad you are insured.
Tarcolan I have always wanted to visit the UK also. I am not giving up on the idea.
We have had very mild temperatures and rain. Oh my goodness Belle I wish I could send you some of it. Anyway have a good weekend.

Hello, my friends. On the subject of England, I've always felt a special kinship, perhaps in part because of my very famous English surname. My father was the same, keeping a picture of Charles on his wall and frequently pointing out the family resemblance. (I'm not sure I saw any, but would in no way point that out to Dad.)
My wife had double knee replacement a while back and is now doing well, walking on her titanium joints with ease, but sometimes with a cane. It seems surgery must affect the mind, or else she's become very, very old. Just recently, she broke the cruise control on one of our cars, then closed the garage door on it. Inside, the carnage continued as she broke the coffee bean grinder, the shower knob, (again)and somehow caused an alarm clock and cell phone to quit working. I tell her she just doesn't pay attention to what she's doing, but that's because I'm a--(insert derogatory term for anus here). It's always my fault, you see. I brought home a bag of bagels, telling her there were three plain, two blueberry, and one cinnamon/raison swirl. Later, she complained, saying, "I thought you said there were some blueberry bagels in there. This one has raisons in it."
Some of you might recall my telling about an old friend who, upon learning he had cancer, completely withdrew from life. Literally, he went in his house, curtained all the windows and quit answering the door or the telephone. We had been best friends for fifty + years, since the age of about 14. He passed away Thursday. (lung cancer and emphysema) No funeral, no obituary, no grave. Just ashes, the disposition of which, no one knows.
Later, everyone.

TARCOLAN:England is one place I would visit (if I had the means).I am french canadian but I feel closer to the english people then the french, maybe because there are english people in my ancestry, and the way you describe it makes me want to be there right now.Sorry for your mother and I understand her confusion,my mother is the same and we have to explain to her sometimes what the nurses want her to do when it's not clear enough.

BELLE: It's been raining here non stop since thursday night.Big fat rain.So far we had 70mm,it's still raining right now and tomorrow will be a nice sunny day, that's what they say anyway.Hope I can send you some your way.

SWABBY:It makes me feel so sad to hear that.To die alone is horrible,no one to look at you or touch you for the last time,no one to be with you it is so tragic. If you are the only person to do it,don't forget about him, remember him in your heart and in your memories.I'm sorry my friend.

Oh dear, Swabby... Not liking the sounds of that at all. Wonder if the anesthesia affected her more than usual. If she's close to your age (and mine), then she should be having so much trouble. It's not really your fault, and she may be lashing out at your out of distress of not remembering and not functioning as well as she used. I'll say at times I'm guilty of it, but I try NOT to do that. Still...

So sorry to hear about your friend, but sadly, know many Veterans who don't have any social support and when they find out they have a terminal disease just retreat from the world to hunker down and wait for the inevitable. Sounds like there wasn't much the medical community could do for him (except get him hospice to make him more comfortable). What a shame. Hugs to you for your trials.

It's dry here, Dimple and no respite in sight. Ugh... Fire season isn't going to be pretty.

swabby, is that Windsor or Dickens? I'd agree with Belle. Anesthetic can cause such problems but hopefully they are temporary. I feel for your friend, wanting to hide away, not to have people fuss and bother. And to be remembered as they were. Anyway you know best their reasons for doing that.

Belle, it seems people in the U.S. are beginning to think this whole global warming thing may not be such a crock of horse manure after all.

So if any of you ever get to England, forget Stonehenge, go to Avebury. And Yorkshire. And Cornwall. And...and...

One of Nature's little jokes is that by the time we've found out how to live life we're too old to take advantage of the knowledge. Ho ho ho.

Boy, isn't that the truth, tarc? Just did a bit with our rabbits and am pooped out (feeding and mucking, so much fun, but truly, not nearly what it was with my horse). Global warming, well... Yes, and no. All I can say is our weather is very weird with too much water in the form of rain and snow in some areas and practically none in others. Mother Nature is NOT happy with us!

I do so want to go to the UK. Would love to visit all those places. Sadly, Stonehenge has just seen too many people tromping over it. Would rather go to more isolated places. Want to see Hadrian's Wall and some of the old castle ruins. Perhaps in my next life.

Sorry to hear about your wife, Swabby. I agree with Tarc that anaesthesia can cause some memory issues, but they should pass in time. If it persists, her physician should be made aware of it.

Welcome back, awelyn! I'm glad you had a wonderful visit. It's always nice to see family and friends when they aren't around on a daily basis.

I'm not sure I agree about the whole Global warming thing since it's been dry but unusually cool here. Not that I'm complaining mind you as I'm not a huge fan of really hot weather.

My gardens are coming along and Miss E.M.P. (Eat My Plants - as I've named my deer) has been keeping everything nicely trimmed, while I've been entertaining the neighbours moving my unplanted stuff on and off the deck so she can't get them. She's totally unconcerned about my feelings and just looked at me with utter disdain the other morning when I caught grazing on the grass in the back yard. Well, she's in for a surprise! The fence posts are curing in the cement as I type this and a 6' chain link fence will be installed on Wednesday. Bye, bye 4' foot picket fence.

I spent many a week in the UK during my misspent gallant youth, and I absolutely loved every trip! I also spent 6 weeks in Eire back in the day, as well as travel to other parts of the world. I'm sure glad I did it then since the costs are prohibitive these days! The year I went to Eire for 6 weeks I spent $500 (CDN) for a return fare and took $500 (US) in travellers cheques .... I came back with $250 of the travellers cheques. Hitchhiked and B&B'd my way around both Ulster and the Old Sod. Landed in Belfast on the the day the "troubles" started in '69 and had a slightly harrowing time trying to get out of Belfast because of the rioting. Finally made it to a friend's up in Larne at 3am in the morning. He was freaked because he had been watching everything on the news and, when we didn't show and didn't show, wondered what had happened to us. Oddly enough, hiked through the rest of Ulster with no problems. Aaah ... the memories!

Is it just me, or was it really a kinder, gentler world then? Anyway, enough of my chatter. Have an awesome week. I've taken pictures which I will post when I get a chance to download them off the camera.

We all hitched everywhere back in the good old days. I think now people have more fear for various reasons, as well as being more self-centred. Time was people could hitch-hike to India.

It's never too late Belle, at least for gentle travelling. My sister (71) is off to Austria again, this time to meet up with brother and wife, who went to Italy after here. He's 67. She's 64.

It's a shame you have to put up a security fence E~S. You'll have to come up with a better idea for next year. Are there any plants that deer hate?

Oh Swabby so sorry about your friend. No funeral but maybe you could have a service somewhere. Go where you two had a great time. Take you guitar sing some songs and remember the good times. Maybe bring some photos. Maybe invite some friends you both shared. In his memory and for your peace. How long has it been since your wife's surgery? The doctor told me you could have strokes with this surgery. I wonder if she might have had a TIA you know a mini-stroke. If things don't improve I would have this checked out ASAP.
ES it was for me a innocent and a gentle time. My mom would send me to the corner grocery when I was 6 with a envelope pinned to my dress with a list with about three things and the money and send me alone. Nothing ever bad happened and the other mothers in the neighborhood did the same. But now you would be insane and arrested for doing that with your child.
Belle I always say my body is a traitor. I know what I want to do but it says no.
Dimple ,how is the gardening coming along?
Tarcolan I agree and I am not giving up and want to travel.

Hello, everyone.
I know, first hand, about being cuckoo after surgery. I'm not sure I've ever found all my scattered marbles after that big heart surgery I had in '09. My wife has ADD, so she's always had trouble with "the little things". A mini stroke? Perhaps, but she might be reluctant to tell her doc about it.
Tarcolan, the name is Dickens. Like nearly all Americans, I'm a mixture of nationalities, but my Dickens bloodline did come here from England, that being one Joseph Dickens, who arrived well before the revolution. I'd like to believe there's a connection to the great author, but so far, I've not found it.
On global warming, it's been pointed out that the term should be called "global weather change." Put simply, the energy in the atmosphere disrupts normal weather patterns and creates extremes in all directions. The science supporting it is very sound, so I think the millions spent by oil companies to constantly cast doubt and muddy the subject works quite well. I'll never understand the greedy mind. In America, politics plays a major role in how one chooses to see it. To quote a recent poll, "39% of Tea Party Republicans think that concern about global warming is unwarranted, while just 13% of all Americans and 7% of non-Tea Party Republicans believe that."
Take care, everyone.

I don't know if it is because we're older but we seem to think of the past as of a better time,,much simpler, less complicated, less violent.Violence has always existed, thieves, crooks, evil people too.Think of medieval times, maybe it was more accepted in those periods,it was the way it was.Today you would think it should be different but I think it is just more civilised, you just don't cut off heads anymore,we're more sophisticated, more ingenuous, the degree of volence has changed but still it is the same on a different level. The difference is that when we were younger we felt safe and secure knowing that the ones who did bad things were punished,we don't have this feeling ,I don't.Different times, different fears, but in a way it doesn't change, the violence is adapting in our way of life.

Awelyn, the gardening is coming along fine, lots of colours, the lilacs are in full bloom and the scent is strong and pleasing. The hummingbirds are back, the other day I was reading a book on the porch and a hummingbird just stop in front of me and for a second looked at me it was the first time I saw a hummingbird near my face like that,it made my day.

Have a nice evening all

Dimple, I think it's also because the news media delight in focusing on the bad stuff, more than it did before. It's ubiquitous now as well, and instantaneous so everyone is saturated with negative images of the world. Kids don't go out to play any more, partly because of parental fear but also technology and the instant gratification culture. They've got it too easy...moan, moan... served up on a plate...gripe, gripe... don't know they're born. I fought in two world wars for their freedom and what do they do with it? Anything they bloomin' like!

Lovely weather here for the past two weeks. I've got an infection of some sort, sore throat and chesty cough. First time in years.

I seem to have become the first contact help person in the flats. One guy had a panic attack, I wanted to slow his breathing down so I said "Big breaths. Yeth and I'm only thikthteen" Difficult to hyperventilate when you're laughing. I took him to the doc but he was ok by the time we got there. Another guy suffers from anxiety but I suspect he milks it a bit. I swear the two of them were in competition for my attention the other day.

Have a good week all

I have this impression: The gap between the haves (a lot) and the have-nots has been widening everywhere since - oh say - the 1980s. In every country. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s, a (very theoretical) alternative model disappeared. I've talked about this with my banker (savings and loan by American standards, I would guess) and told him point-blank that the greed-mongers went ape - err - feces? at about that time. He agreed.
Where we are drifting towards is neo-feudalism. I have read plenty about the old version. The feudal lords paid practically no taxes, the farmers (and perhaps some others on the same level) had to shoulder the tax load - which is why there have been serious farmer insurrections worldwide again and again- very much including China.
So what have we had all over the place in the at least past two decades? Tax breaks for the haves. My mother died last year, so I know where the tax exemption amount is in Germany - six figures. It was a THOUSAND times as high up to the early 2000s in the US - now it's gone.
The only sensible taxation period especially in the US was 1933 to 1981.
A period called in an economics book I have read as the great compression. Lots of the Rockefellers, Carnegies, Vanderbilts etc. had to give up quasi-feudal mansions because they were no longer able to pay for the up-keep. Sounds very familiar in comparison to families belonging to the "nobility" in England.
Now the situation has turned. A new "nobility" has manged to totally pervert democracies by their extremely corrupting campaign donations.
The old "nobility" had their "black sheep" (in the highest levels often the result of deadly inbreeding).
Now, I would hypothesize, you need a magnifying glass to find the aberrant white sheep.

I went to my oldest granddaughters dance recital Sunday she is 15 and her sister who is 6 also had a dance recital on Sunday. The 6 year old had stage fright something awful. I talked to her as did her mother and father but she kept saying I am not going to do this and her mom insisted. I whispered to her I have felt the same way. She said you have I said yes every play I have done I had big butterflies in my stomach but Maegan you will do fine I promise. She did great as did her sister neither one of them made a mistake. Maegan rushed off the stage and gave me such a big hug. I almost cried I was so happy for her. Swabby I had the DNA test from ancestry .com and was so surprised but happy with my results. I hope your wife is better.
Dimple your garden sounds lovely and I have never had a hummingbird that close to me. It would have made my day too. Lily and I saw a Cardinal today and a squirrel she was so excited.
tarcolan I agree they focus on the negative to much and sorry to hear you are not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon. I do take my granddaughter outside to play and we also take her to the park. I have a big backyard and I have a swing set and two little slides and a trampoline and an above ground pool . So she has many things to keep her busy. The trampoline we have belonged to Lily's mom and the swing set is old also but I come from a generation that takes care of things so it can be used and recycled so not just one child uses it but many.Gandolorin I do agree and it saddens me that it is so but I guess we have to live with it.
Have a good week.

TARCOLAN:I don't know if it is because I eat one orange a day for many years now but I don't have cold , sore throat,or coughing anymore.I hope it will last for many more years, crossed my fingers. And I totally agree with you and with Gandolorin.Do we live in dangerous time and don't know about it??

AWELYN:I wish I was a grandmother to whisper little things in my grandchild's ear to make her feel better.Your both lucky to have each other

The worker is down in the basement to start the renovation, the house is a mess but it is so nice out that I'll have my head down on my bedplants and enjoy myself anyway and the birds are so talkative this morning I guess they have a lot of news to share.

Have a nice day

YABBA DABBA DOOOOO! Picked up my JRRT Beowulf today, but see the Books Thread "Beowulf" for that.

And more important:

It finally rained again today for the first time in I do not know how many days. Practically half of 2014 gone, and only May had average precipitation (I think I posted something about Nov 2013 to Mar 2014 earlier).
More rain (and more volume of it) is predicted for tonight and tomorrow. Still, unless we get flooding, this June will be the negative record for precipitation since weather record have been kept in the region (about 135 Years). Farmers and foresters are definitely worried. Some fruit trees have begun dropping unripe fruit, and the pines around us have been dropping cones at a frightening rate.
So hoping for a useful downpour over the rest of the weekend and beyond!

awelyn - I'm glad you have been having a wonderful time with your granddaughters. It's nice to have so much loving support when you're young. Have you taken any pictures you can share with us? It would be lovely to see them.

tarc - Sorry you're feeling a bit under the weather. I hate catching anything in the summer as it seems to hang on much longer than is acceptable. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is just a minor virus and you'll be up and at 'em quickly.

Dimple - Having undergone renovations when I first moved into my house, you have my sympathy. I'm not a huge fan of chaos so my experience has somewhat put me off but my bathroom does need up-dating .... does anyone remember the "fall yellow" bathtubs and sinks prevalent in the 1970's? Well, that's what I have. I just thank my lucky stars I didn't end up with the "avocado" and "umber" (orange).

My garden is finally pretty much finished. The fencing is up and there haven't been any deer sightings in the yard. It's amazing how much larger the yard looks with the chain link fence. For some reason the white picket fence made it look so small. I'm waiting for things to start blooming before I take some pictures. At the rate, the plants are growing, that shouldn't take too long.

On a more personal note, I had a letter from an Uncle I haven't heard from in many years. Although we're not close, I had been wondering about that side of the family recently. There were four brothers in the group, my father being the third of them. His letter was to advise me that the eldest brother had just died on May 25 at 102? 103? years of age. The second oldest is still around at 99 years June 6, although he has little to do with any of us. This Uncle is the baby of the family and will be 89 in August.

He was very happy to have caught up with me and sent me a nice newsy letter. I was sorry to hear that his wife had died in early March of this year and he had been unable to maintain his beautiful property in Victoria on his own. He has sold it and moved to a condo in downtown Vancouver to be closer to his daughters. I gather from his comments that he's not particularly enjoying his new lifestyle. He's used to much less hustle and bustle, but seems to be resigned to his circumstances. He's pretty pragmatic so I suspect he'll settle in well enough.

Well, that's enough from me. It's the Canada Day weekend here so I would like to wish all the Canucks who frequent this thread a wonderful weekend.

Gandolorien,I am so glad that you have had rain and I hope you have more and enjoy your book.
ESI have photos on facebook of them but do not know how to get them on here. I have tried and tried but I can't seem to get it right. Computer challenged here. Glad your garden is finished and no unwelcome guest to dinner. I love looking up and reading family history. I have a letter 1912 or 1913 from my grandmother's brother while he was serving in WW1 in France. It was so interesting.Happy Canada Day on the first of July.

Just got home from Colorado and am really, really tired. No access to CoE during the time I was there. So green with a lot of thunderstorms there, but dry as a bone here. *sigh* Wish I lived closer to my daughter and her family. Got to see both her and my granddaughter in Sound of Music.

Glad you had a good time Belle, so good to see family. I hope you get rain soon.

awelyn, I don't think you can link to a picture on facebook without getting a whole page. Another reason not to like fb. You will have to upload photos to an image hosting site 'cos they provide BBcode links to copy and paste here. I use postimage.org as it's nice and easy.

You may not be able to post a photo directly from Facebook, but you can post a link to a photo.

Right click on the photo you want. Select "Properties", usually at the bottom of the dialog box that appears when you right clicked.

When the next dialog box appears, click on the information to the right of "Address" "(URL)", then right click and click "Select All". Right click again and click "Copy".

Then you paste it into code that looks like this:

[ url=https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-
xap1/v/t1.0-9/10426651_672599689476374_935908068818256094_n.jpg?
oh=3bc61d837cd8780f5b9cba4e2771ee0d&oe=5413E331&__gda__=1411136888
_0d6a94d0fca20eafd7c4fbfbe16dd20d]Facebook Kitty[/url]

You will need to remove the space between the first [ and url for it to work. I had to put it in there for you to see how the code looks.

You are adding the bolded stuff to the beginning and end of the address you copied.

[ url= at the beginning
then ]Title of photo[ /url]

Without all those pesky spaces I had to include, it should then look like this:

Also, if you click the "Add Reply" button at the top of any page in a thread, you will get a big box to type your message in AND a "Preview" button! That way you'll see exactly how your post will look before you post. And, when you click your link, it will pop up in a new window so you don't have to worry about losing your post.

I hope this helps. Any questions, let me know.

Happy Canada Day Dimple.

Hi Nenya_Gold, nice to see ya. Those instructions only work in IE although it didn't show the whole address for me. In Chrome there's a Copy URL menu item and in Firefox too I think. Otherwise just pick View Image in new tab and copy address. I don't know what you'd do on the Mac.
If you want the image to show in the post highlight the address and click the Image icon, like this

I would still recommend postimage 'cos you get a Copy button to grab BB code for forums, then you just have to paste it in. Easy!

Lovely weather here after a day of rain. Young foxes playing on our lawn.

Thanks tarc!

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I use IE. Thanks for the clarification!

Depending on the size of the image, it's usually better for scrolling through threads to post a link to the photo instead of the actual photo. Because of small file space, it used to be a CoE rule that you couldn't post a photo in a thread, but I see that it isn't so important anymore.

Also, I didn't think many members were aware of the Preview button in the other Reply box. I don't use it much except for checking links, now that there is a spell checker in IE. Gotta love technology!

Nenya, image size is not only not important it's not even possible to upload an image any more. Just as well really. The webpage limits the size to 590 pixels so size isn't a problem (as the actress said to the ... never mind). And all browsers have a spellchecker now. Right clicking in the text input box allows you to switch it on and even change dictionary.
Here's a pic of my mum's garden

Yeah, software has changed so much since the site started. Before browsers had spell checkers, we had Rivka put one in. It really helped but you had to "run" it -- it didn't check on the fly like they do now. Gotta love technology! I was born and raised here before it became Silicon Valley and have seen the changes through the years. Fascinating stuff.

Beautiful garden, by the way!

Here's our newest family member -- just for some morning cuteness.

TARCOLAN:Your mum has a lovely garden

NENYAGOLD:Your cats are adorable.

Everytime I hear talk about technology makes me dizzy,I don't understand nothing,a big zero, zilch,I'm completely lost about it and when it's too complicated I ask my husband .I know how to get around for my needs but beside that nothing, but really I should pay more attention just in case I'm stuck by myself I should be able to do more on my own but it seems so complicated!!

Have a nice night all

Dimple, those delphiniums didn't come up this year I like the tall plants. There's a fantastic black hollyhock, never got it to grow though. There's a great giant mullein this year, verbascum olympicum. Foxgloves of course and loosestrife. Pity my mum's in hospital at the moment, she had a fall last night and broke the top of the femur and she's in for an operation tomorrow morning to bolt it back together, hopefully with a spinal anaesthetic rather than a full one. At 93 she might not survive that. I got summoned by the panic button people and knew it was bad when I saw her leg at a funny angle. She was carrying her soup from the mic to table in both hands, no stick. I was really upset, terrible waste of soup.

She's in a private wing of the hospital, grrr. Cherry picking of the easy ops and if it goes wrong they can trolley the patient to NHS A&E. Easy profit. Privatise the gains and socialise the losses.

I'm pretty tech savvy but even I think computers are far too complicated and messy. Great when they work but all too often requiring some ridiculously cryptic and arcane incantations and ritual to get them going again. The thing is I know it's not necessary, it could all be a lot easier.

Various other bad things have happened lately so I'm taking the edge off the stress with a glass of Theakston's 'Old Peculier'.

Be thankful for what you've got, people.

That rain prediction end of June was a bit of a disappointment, but since last weekend, and very much so since yesterday evening, we have finally had a steady pour through most of today. No torrents, thankfully, just steady rain.
