Sagittarius (Realm Newsletter)

Period: November 23 – December 21
Element: Fire
Colour: Gray
Stone: Amethyst

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Sagittarius:
Sagittarius is the most open, optimistic and cheerful of signs. People of the sign have a lot of various interests, which they indulge, travelling all over both real and imaginary worlds. Notwithstanding the seeming sparseness of their nature, Sagittarians are matchless in analyzing and summarizing different facts. They treat life in a philosophic way. The talents of Sagittarians shine their brightest, when they have an opportunity to teach someone and to bring someone on the right track. They are pets of luck and science. The most important decisions are made in good mood, when there’s a definite aim. Sagittarians are loved and respected for their generosity – material and spiritual. Justice is their priority, and they will fight for it if needed, although they’d prefer to solve problems in a peaceful way.

The month ahead:
Enjoy it. Simply enjoy. Let the power of this months bring you pleasure and energy. Don’t think how right it is – feel ecstatic and intoxicated by it. Create without being limited by rationality. Love without any hesitation. Once or twice you may be sobered by facts that you’ve ignored during the past months, but simply know, that everything will be conquered with your bubbling vitality and daring flight of a thought. If you love the life, the life loves you.

The dark side of the Sagittarius:
People know you’re a Sagittarius, when they feel you look at them, but see a rosy elephant with flowers on both sides. You cannot help having your head in the clouds. Yet woe is he, who dared to disrupt your sweet dreams. He’s mostly safe only because you cannot decide what to throw at him first.

And don’t be upset if some do not approve of your traveller spirit. Homebodies never meet those rosy elephants, right?

Scorpio (Realm Newsletter)

Period: October 24 – November 22
Element: Water
Colour: Dark Red/Maroon
Stone: Opal

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Scorpion:
Scorpion people are passionate and emotional, with very deep feelings. Although you are a loyal and dedicated friend, you are fiercely competitive, subject to fits of vindictive jealousy and can be quite manipulative in pursuit of your goals. On the surface you may seem easy-going, congenial, and gregarious, but you are also extremely tenacious with a need to manipulate and control your situations. Others only get to know you up to a point. You may not show any sign of inner struggle, but when you are after something (or someone) your determination is fierce — and should you not be favoured in the outcome, you are neither a willing nor a gracious loser. You hate being crossed or manipulated, and can react to such treatment with sarcasm and vengefulness. Scorpio’s real involvement is not primarily based on love or even pleasure, but on the control and understanding of human emotions and the role they play in the mysterious processes of life and death.

The month ahead:
You will start this month with a very strong desire to be involved in some favorite activities and recreation. There are many activities that will come to you very fast when you least expect them which could very well change your plans for the future. Wherever your dreams in life are could look very rosy right now, but there is always a hidden lesson for you in here. Take this with a grain of salt. This could bring to you extra income but it also could go out fast. Easy comes easy goes and this could cause you some agitation. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket and use prudence in the way you handle your money.

The dark side of Scorpio:
Scorpio is the drama queen of the zodiac, given to extremes in all things. Tears fall at the drop of a hat, many only for show. And heaven forbid that someone crosses them. Scorpio is capable of plotting the most dramatic revenge of any other sign. Cross a Scorpion at your peril for she has a very long memory.

Libra (Realm Newsletter)

Period: September 24 – October 23
Element: Air
Colour: Dark-blue
Stone: Opal

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Libra:
People, born Libras, have a sharp sense of harmony. Their behavior is often prompted not by their own wish, but by the desire of making an agreeable impression on the others. They are always able to look at the situation with an alien eye, from the outside. It is because of this, that Libras find it hard to decide on something without studying all pluses and minuses, and asking for someone’s advice. It may seem that the others decide for them – but they hate it when someone tries to influence them aggressively. They agree with everyone, but act as they want. Being very balanced and well-informed person, they adapt to any situation and company in a blink of an eye, and simply blossom there where their creativity and diplomatic talent is needed.

The month ahead:
Ooops. It’ seems like you are facing the choice again. And the choice between two equally decent things. The April prompts you to quit analyzing, because this time your logical thinking is a bad adviser. The harder you try to unravel the knot, the more tangled it becomes. Trust your feelings and emotional experience, not your head. And if you don’t believe yourself – then trust the sensual perception of the others. This time they are right.

The dark side of the Libra:
Everyone loves Libra. They are sincere, attentive and warm-hearted. But even the hottest heart cannot warm a cool-blooded frog, no matter how sweet and harmonious it seems with its smooth green pads and lovely spots on its sides. Libras sacrifice themselves for harmony and all-around concord, when they must let someone else kiss frogs and enjoy the show as an outside watcher.

Be yourself, Libras. May be, you’ll lose some of your admirers, but those who remain will certainly be worthy of the rare love and thoughtfulness, you radiate.

Gemini (Realm Newsletter)

Period: May 22 – June 21
Element: Air
Colour: Yellow
Stone: Emerald

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Gemini:
There is certainly no sign more fickle than the Gemini. Like a young kid in a toy store, he will run around grasping the first thing he sees until, mere seconds later, something else catches his eye and he is off again. Still, this changeable side is not a negative side per se; it also makes him adaptable and versatile, able to adjust to any change of situation. You won’t often catch a Gemini off his game.

This is also a sign with a keen intelligence, a quick wit and often strong persuasive qualities. He loves mastering his natural analytical skills (spent too much hours doing Sudoku?), but when there is actual learning, meaning work, to be done, he turns away. This total package (not forgetting the Twins natural charm) makes any Gemini an excellent debater, diplomat, salesperson or scientist.

The month ahead:
A word of caution thought, for the Twin that treads too lightly; watch your words a bit, because they might have you stepping on toes with feet attached to it that kick back. Hard. Also a note on decision-making in the field of love; a situation will soon come up, one you might or might not have been expecting, where you have only two choices: flight or fight. It might be a good idea to start thinking further ahead into the future before making a choice, because even the most movable boat needs a place to cast anchor every once in a while…..

The dark side of the Gemini:
The Gemini is the water strider of the zodiac. He can cover quite an area in a short period of time, be it in relationships or hobbies, but never reach farther into the matter than the surface. The Twin may not be the one that judges a book by its cover, but he’s certainly the one that puts it down after ten pages to go find something else to do. Like a butterfly he’ll be flitting from one activity to another, until some quick tempered sign comes along to smack him down.

Taurus (Realm Newsletter)

Period: April 21 – May 21
Element: Earth
Colour: Pink
Stone: Emerald

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Taurean:
Practical, reliable Taureans are great lovers of sensual pleasures, although you do tend to be rather stubborn, possessive and conservative. Firmly anchored in the material world, you have a fine grasp of what is needed in order to lead the good life. Firmly anchored in the material world, you have a fine grasp of what is needed in order to lead the good life. Of course, you are capable in emergencies, where you have an instinctive understanding of what to do, but under normal circumstances, no-one can force you into anything without due time for thought and consideration. Tactile and sensuous, you have a nose for personal comfort and physical pleasure. You need to take some regular exercise and control that tendency to overindulge in rich foods and the other pleasures in life. Taureans are very strong-willed and often quite creative, combined with a passionate nature endowed with a strong sense of loyalty and fidelity. You are kind and generous with friends, with whom you develop an unspoken rapport.

The month ahead:
You could be facing this month many unexpected social activities that could come to your life in very rapid succession. There is the need to be aware of the difficulties that some of these activities could bring especially in regard to the way you acted in the past. Much harmony seems to be prevailing at your home base while you make some personal adjustments related to your immediate future. There is a good possibility for an increase in your shared income and resources and you are looking at this with restraint and prudence without letting yourself be carried away.

The dark side of Taurus:
You’ve see them…sitting in a soft leather chair, dressed in silks and velvets, surrounded by a library of first editions, a snifter of the finest brandy in their hands. All this wealthy glory is probably charged to over-the-limit credit cards. Taureans love creature comfort but they’re not too wise about financial management.

Aries (Realm Newsletter)

Period: March 20 – April 19
Element: Fire
Colour: Red
Stone: Diamond

What the stars above Ulmo’s water tell the Aries:
Aries people are bold and self-confident, although they tend to be overly impulsive. Ariens are great organisers, full of flair and originality, although usually lacking discipline and the capacity for prolonged effort (minions must be found to do the slog work!). You are intuitive and articulate, with the capacity to inspire others. Ariens are always overflowing with ideas, schemes and plans to conquer the world. You have masses of energy and courage and will rush in where angels fear to tread, for the Arien ego can be rather overbearing. Creative Aries, a cardinal sign, loves to be the leader and can organise fantastic and impressive ventures. Unfortunately, despite your desire to be the front-runner in all you do, sometimes you do get bored with the whole affair and can just wander off, or sit back and allow the lesser folk to have their way.

The month ahead:
This month your life will be full of many private moments while you are trying to make some adjustments in your love life as this area seem to cause you some restrictions. A cooperative approach could work to your advantage and will help you to reach some personal growth. You could be feeling that you are caged in but these feelings soon will pass. A far away trip could be in the planning stages as you try to get rid of some of your insecurity feelings. All this could be the cause of some agitation for you. You need to patch some differences of opinion that you have with a loved one and this will bring healing to your relationship.

The dark side of the Aries:
“Me first, me first!” is the song of Aries, who believes they are biggest and best. When confronted with opposition, however, they run for a hole and hide, wounded beyond the quick until they recover their oh-so-large ego. Then with a wild hat and rose coloured glasses they swagger out with all intentions of taking charge…again.

Terry Pratchett (Realm Newsletter)

Author of the Month: Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett is a successful British fantasy-author whose Discworld series is well known throughout the world. Although this series now contains thirty-five novels (as of 2006), these are not the only books he has written. Other works include the Bromeliad and the Johnny Maxwell trilogy, as well as other novels, volumes and short stories.

He was born in 1948 in Beaconsfield, England, and credits High Wycombe Technical High School and Beaconsfield Public Library for his education. Pratchett, who was working as a journalist at the time, mentioned to a co-director of a small publishing company whom he interviewed that he had written a manuscript, which in 1971 was to be his first published novel, The Carpet People. Working as a journalist, and from 1980 as the Press Officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board, Pratchett wrote in his spare time and published several novels. The first Discworld novel, The Color of Magic, was published in 1983. In 1987 he began writing full time, and he has since then published about two novels a year.

In 1998 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to literature. Pratchett himself commented upon this by saying: ‘I suspect the “services to literature” consisted of refraining from trying to write any.’ Furthermore, he has been awarded with several honorary Doctorates of Literature, and his The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents won him the 2001 Carnegie Medal, an annual award for outstanding books for children and young adults.

The Discworld series, however, is probably the most famous part of his works, which is why this article will focus mainly on this one. The Discworld derives its name from the fact that the world upon which the stories take place is a flat, circular Disc resting on the backs of four elephants, in turn standing on the back of the great turtle A’Tuin, who swims through space. If a Discworld ship appears to sail off the edge of the world, that is what actually happens to it. On the Disc there is a fantasy world with dwarfs, wizards, witches, trolls and dragons. None of these are quite of the conventional type, but outgrow their stereotype in some way or another, or reaffirm them to a point where they are rather parodies of the stereotypes than the stereotypes themselves.

‘The world rides through space on the back of a turtle. This is one of the great ancient world myths, found wherever men and turtles are gathered together; the four elephants were an Indo-European sophistication. The idea has been lying in the lumber room of legend for centuries. All I had to do was grab it and run away before the alarms went off.’ (www.terrypratchettbooks.com)

The Discworld books are humorous and satirical, and explore many different themes and poke fun at many aspects of our own society as well as merely parodying existing movies, books, plays and various parts of popular culture, though this is something that is usually true of all Pratchett’s books. Another trademark of his are the footnotes, which provide humorous details which would not really fit into the main story as such, or which describe the use of certain words or phrases. An example of this would be the following quote: ‘Goodie Whemper had, in fact, been a research witch.* [* Someone has to do it. It’s all very well calling for eye of newt, but do you mean Common, Spotted, or Great Crested? Which eye, anyway? Will tapioca do just as well?]’ (Wyrd Sisters)

There are several story arcs set in the Discworld, following the development of certain people (or groups of people). Some notable story arcs are the one concerning Rincewind, a wizzard (sic; it says so on his pointy hat) from the Unseen University whose skill in magic is pretty much nonexistent; the one concerning the Ankh-Morpork City Watch; the one concerning a group of witches in the kingdom of Lancre; and the one where Death, in the form of a black-robed skeleton with a scythe riding a white, multidimensional horse named Binky, is the main character. Death and many other characters often occur as side characters in many of the other books, even though those books are not part of ‘their’ story arc. A notable side character, who has never been a main character, is the Librarian of the Unseen University, the university at which wizards are educated. The Librarian was once a magician who was, due to a magical accident, transformed into an orangutan, and has firmly opposed being transformed back into a human, and is allowed to remain the librarian because ‘he’s the only one who knows where all the books are’ and also due to the fact that he could screw a man’s head off with his feet if he wanted to. The wizards themselves have grown so used to the situation, that ‘if someone ever reported that there was an orangutan in the Library, the wizards would probably go and ask the Librarian if he’d seen it.’ (Night Watch). Other books in the series are not part of any particular story arc, but some of these nevertheless depend heavily on other books.

The Librarian is not the only orangutan with which Pratchett is associated: he has also done work for the Orangutan Foundation, and fan events such as the Discworld Conventions have adopted the Orangutan Foundation as their nominated charity. Pratchett is also a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association.

‘There are no maps. You can’t map a sense of humor. Anyway, what is a fantasy map but a space beyond which There Be Dragons? On the Discworld we know There Be Dragons Everywhere. They might not all have scales and forked tongues, but they Be Here all right, grinning and jostling and trying to sell you souvenirs.’ (www.terrypratchettbooks.com)

So, is he a good writer then? Success need not necessarily mean that an author’s work is outstanding, but in the case of Terry Pratchett the latter is clearly the reason for the former. His style is quite distinct, and he is a very skilled writer. One of his trademarks is, as has been said, his humour and satire (personally, I do not think that I have read a single one of his books without laughing out loud at some point or other). However, there are several of his stories that are basically serious and solemn in tone, despite this style of writing, and Pratchett is skilled at blending both humour and seriousness.

Now, personally, I am biased: there are few writers whose books and writings I am this fond of. Others may feel that his personal style of fantasy has a negative aspect, for it is fairly distinct: there are certain ‘fantastical’ features about the Discworld which are far beyond what is seen in most other modern fantasy, while at the same time the characters are basically realistically portrayed, however absurd some of them and their actions may be. The most ‘serious’ or realistic characters actually behave rather rationally a great deal of the time, but with a world as weird as the Discworld, ‘rationally’ is very much a relative word. Although not all his writings are set in the Discworld, some of them even being set here on Earth, his style of fantasy is still distinct enough in these mentioned ways to be noticed. Other readers may miss the ‘stereotypical’ heroes and quests found in mainstream fantasy, or the high style of such writers as J.R.R. Tolkien. The satirical mirror that much of Pratchett’s works holds up to our own world may or may not be something that intrigues you. However, to me, and many other Pratchett fans, putting one of his books down once you have begun reading it is a difficult thing to do. If you try one of his books, however, and like it, you will have scores of books to add to your to-read list.

‘Books’ve got to have a name on ’em so’s everyone knows who’s guilty.’ (Maskerade)

The Waters of Ulmo (Realm Newsletter)

“Great River”, “Long River”, “Langflood”; these are some of the names assigned to the longest river in Middle-earth during the Third and into the Fourth Age, the Anduin. Originating from two smaller rivers that combine under the Grey Mountains it traverses the entire width of the land until some 1500 miles later branches out into a wide delta called “The Mouths of the Anduin” before spilling into the Bay of Belfalas. Along it banks and tributaries are some of the most historic places in all of Arda:

Gladden Fields – The River Gladden originates in the Misty Mountains and flows eastward until joining the Anduin, where it settles into a low-lying field creating the marshes. Early in the TA it was the site of a murderous ambush, resulting in the death of the Dúnedain King Isildur and three of his sons. The One Ring Isildur cut from the hand of Sauron was lost with him, where it lay for almost two thousand years in the murky depths before being found by a hobbit named Déagol.

Lórien – Nestled in the pocket of land where the river tributary Celebrant meets the Anduin, this woodland kingdom of the Silvan Elves was founded sometime before the First Age of the Sun. Better known as Lothlórien, “the land of blossom dreaming”, it came under the rule and protection of Galadriel and her husband, Celeborn during the TA, after the death of its ancient King, Amroth.

Rauros Falls – On the northern border of Gondor, this spectacular natural phenomena spill from the lake of Nen Hithoel from the heights of the Emyn Muil. Though it can’t be forged, there is a way around it. A set of stairs are cut in the cliff face. It was over this falls that the funeral boat of Boromir was sent after he was slain by Orcs. His brother, Faramir saw this in a dream-vision.

Cair Andros – Translated, the name means “Ship of Long-foam”, which aptly describes this river island north of the White Tower. Shaped like a great ship, the bow was a huge upward sweep of rocks which the strong waters of the Anduin would crash along in frothy, rolling waves. This natural island fortress was of major importance to both Gondor and Rohan. It was one of two ways to easily move an army to strike at the interior of Gondor and as such was defended fiercely but apparently sporadically over the Ages. During the War of the Ring it was briefly overtaken by a force of Orcs and Men unleashed from the Morannon by Sauron. This move effectively stalled the Rohirrim coming to Gondor’s call for aid but after the battle at Pelennor and Sauron’s fall, the island was soon retaken.
