My favorite quote is from the "father and son" talk Gandalf and Frodo have in Moria, after Frodo discovers they are being followed by Gollum:
F: "I wish the ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened". G: "So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil". Gandalf's words are heard again when Frodo is setting off on his own, when we see him in tears, and Gandalf's voice in his head says: "All you have to decide what to do with the time that is given to you". I like it so much I have made part of it as my signature!

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.

The are so many quotable lines, it's hard to choose just one... so I'll take a combo:

Boromir says something like: " You must go to save the White City..."
Aragorn says: "I promise, I will not let the White City fall or our people fail!"
Boromir responds with: " I would have followed you... my brother... my captain... my king !"
This isn't exact since I'm usually sobbing before Boromir gets his last line out ***sniff***. The scene really gets to me!!

it's something to think about in our "real" lives too, and not just in the movie/book.

"I would have followed you... my brother... my captain... my king."

Definately my favourite part, followed closely by the Gandalf/Frodo conversation.

The movie managed to make the characters feel real, although I think that it did leave a bit of character development that I loved in the books, but then there is only so much that you can do in three hours.

I agree with you, Strider9....although I think I like it better when Aragorn says "We will not abandon Merry and Pippen to torment and death".....and the reaction on Legolas's and Gimli's faces when they realize he means to go after them. Good upbeat ending to the movie when you've just had that emotional moment with Boromir's death and the breaking of the fellowship.

Ah, but the whole movie is one long good quote!

I'll try to narrow is down just a bit though.
"Gandalf said: 'don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee' and I don't mean to."
From the fammous "car scene."

To continue on that thread...
"I made a promise, Mr. Frodo, a promise! Gandalf said 'don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee' and I don't mean to [sob] I don't mean to."
(Oohh, break my heart right now!)

"Oh we had one already, but what about second breakfast? [to Merry] Do you think he knows about second breakfast?"

"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."
Galadriel, just after her "radioactive sequence."

"It comes in pints? I'm getting one!"
We all know when and where that line occurs.

"Please Mr. Frodo, don't let him turn me into anything...unnatural."
And just before that one: "I wasn't droppin' no eaves sir!"

And of course I agree with all the posters who've mentioned Boromir's line just before his death. Poor Boromir.

"I would have followed you... my brother... my captain... my king."
that's a very emotional bit

my other favourite actually involves Boromir too (er...)
it's in Lothlorien, when Boromir tells Aragorn that Galadriel spoke to him of the white city:
"She said that even now there is still hope left, but I cannot see it"
and Aragorn sits next to him! love that bit

and then, off course, the my precious routine that returns from time to time

personally, I didn't like the 'hunt some orc' thing, because it's really out of character, for Aragorn: he's been walking around with dignity, being the lonely weary ranger all movie long!

oh, and Gimli, falling off the bridge: "Not the beard!"

mmm, that, and all the other lines in the film...

I agree with you on that one, Figwit. Another OOC (for me, anyway) was "Nobody tosses a dwarf!" Hilariously funny, yes. In character, probably (Gimli was very proud). But for some reason that one really stuck out at me.
One of my favourite quotes/moments is when they are outside of Moria, and Aragorn tells everyone to get up, then Boromir says "For pity's sake give them some time...." I can't remember the exact words, but I love that part.

Here are some others that I like.

Aragorn: I swore to protect you.

Frodo: Can you protect me from yourself? Would you destroy it?

Aragorn: I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.

K, this is how I remember it:

Aragorn says: "I promise, I will not let the White City fall or our people fail!"
Boromir: " Our people, our people! I would have followed you to the end... my brother... my captain... my king !"

Not much difference, but that was one of my favorite scenes (I hate spelling)

Man I have loads! One is
"I've been droppin' no eaves sir!" Sam is so sweet!, also

"They have a cave troll" When me and my friend first heard it we were in hysterics for ages!, erm, also

"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future" Very wise words

"Then I know what I must do, it's just that I'm afraid to do it" Man Frodo is cute

I think Gimli said some of the funniest things, "Not the beard" and "No-one tosses a dwarf" Classic.

Just remembered some more!

Pippin: You need someone of intelligence for this mission, quest, thing
Merry: Well that rules you out then Pip
Lol!
Bilbo: I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and like less than half of you half as well as you deserve (not sure if that's quoted right, but still funny)
Aragorn: The mines are no place for a pony, even one as brave as Bill
I am quite obssessed, I have all quotes on every page of my planner!

I like Merry and Pippin with Aragorn and not knowing about second breakfast, elvenses, luncheon, etc. For quotes that are cool but not funny, I love Eowyn's speech to the witch king, and when she's talking about not wanting to live her life in a cage. Oh, and Legolas and Elladan in RotK when they're talking about seeing the dead. I kept on imagining Legolas looking up at Elrohir and whispering, "I see dead people."

*** big laugh!*** Ve-e-r-ry good, Silviel! It's always nice to get a fresh twist... and I needed a good laugh!!

Darn it, though... now when I do see RotK, that'll pop into my mind... another 'inappropriate' laugh... like "and in the darkness bite them" that Gandalf mis-speaks in FotR... I always laugh!
