Curulindel turned to Ciryacáno and away from the Rangers and the young elven maiden. He brushed back his long dark hair over his shoulders and emptied the last drop of drink from his cup. "You are right Ciryacáno. We should retire and get going again early in the morning." he got from his chair, picked up his bundle of weapons and things and went to the Innkeeper to ask for a room. There were rooms with several beds and Curulindel nodded. He didn't mind sharing.

Erkenwine grinned when Val came along to take Ceindra to..bed...rather...to the their quarters. Erkenwine liked the young jolly elven maiden very much, even though she seemed to be together with Val. But Erkenwine didn't mind, he enjoyed a little flirt and flattery with any female being, even with a pretty Hobbit. He talked some more with Strider after Ceindra walked off then also said his good-byes and followed Curulindel up to the room.

Gelmir had upon arrival done his best to resist his urge to unroll some of his manuscripts on the table where the group had seated themselves. Instead he had ordered an ale. He had never tasted one before and to his surprise he found it to his liking.
After having eaten they soon retired to their rooms, and once there Gelmir finally grabbed one of his manuscripts, titled "The Istari". It was an old roll of parchment concerned with the arrival and description of the wizzards in Middle Earth. He had worked through this often during the last few weeks, always hoping to find some new clue that he had not seen before. But again he was unsuccessful. He sighed and extingushed the candle that had given him enough light for his study but had still not disturbed the others in the room.
He turned around in his bed and lay awake for some time longer before falling into an uneasy sleep.

Luckily, Ceindra's father had given her quite a lot of money so she could easily afford a room of her own. Only once did she wake up. It was in the middle of the night, when she thought she heard some disturbance. She got up, and went to the window. She was disturbed by what she saw. Never in Mithlond had she seen the beings that were outside. Riders, clad in ragged black, and on black horses. They were tall, and filled her with fear. But she was made of sterner stuff than even most elves, although she did not show it, and she did not hide, but rather watched them. They were searching for something, that was obvious. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a small shape fall to the right, and she turned to look. The riders were going towards it. She watched in horror as they came closer. But suddenly, a figure bearing a lantern ran towards it, and the riders fled. But they were not gone. She could feel their presence, somewhere in Bree. She knew that she should leave the window, but she stayed for a little longer before going back to her bed, and she lay there for many hours, trying to make sense of things.

Her head told her to tell Cir about what she had seen, but she decided against it, not wanting to trouble him. But she did not sleep anymore that night, but kept a watch on the world outside. She thought once that she had seen a rider, but it was only a glimpse. And as she stood at the window, she appeared very fair in the moonlight, the only elven maiden in the area. Her white clothing were pure, and she seemed rather like a ghost or a spirit in the night, looking out as the wind swept through her hair.

Cir watched as Val ambled over to the table where Erkenwine and the other ranger were sitting and talking with Ceindra. He shook his head slightly, his mind trying to grasp the amazing facets of the young elf maiden. He knew she had grown up in the Grey Havens, the sheltered daughter of high elven background. Yet here she was, at ease with total strangers in an environment so totally unlike anything she had ever experienced. He realized he was probably the only one of the group that recognized her hidden values. Even Val, who he knew had an interest in Ceindra beyond just friendship (though he wondered if either one of them realized it), looked at her as a lighthearted, somewhat immature, maiden. Ah, well, Cir thought, time would tell.

As he finished his last sip of mead, he smiled at Gelmir, who, distracted as usual, had seemed to find enjoyment in the pint of ale he had ordered. He watched as Gelmir gathered his parchments together, mumbling to himself, his eyes wandering around the tavern as though looking for somewhere to go. Cir reached across and spoke softly to him.

"Gelmir! Erkenwine, Curulindel, Val, you and I are sharing a room tonight. There. Follow Val, now that he has Ceindra in his care. He will show you the way. I shall be along in a moment." He gave Gelmir a gentle push in the right direction and then walked over to Erkenwine and his friend. "Good eve, sir," he bowed slightly to the unknown ranger. "My name is Ciryacáno and I'm sure Erkenwine has shared the news with you that we are bound for Imladris. Are you also journeying there? Would you like to join us, if that be the case?"

Strider, for that was who the ranger was, smiled and bent his head slightly. "My name is Strider and yes, I am destined to head for Rivendell but not just yet. I await the arrival of some other travelers first. But I do thank you for your invitation. I know we will meet again, once we have reached Elrond's halls." Cir nodded his head and bowed again, his hand over his heart. There was something ... noble ... about this scruffily dressed ranger.

"Then I shall take my leave, sir, for we must leave early in the morning. We have already been delayed and I am anxious to be on the move." Turning to Erkenwine, he layed his hand on the ranger's shoulder. "I think we should leave at sun-up, thus I need to rest now. Stay here as long as you like but complain not when I roust you from your bed before the sun has risen above the trees." He laughed and left the two rangers talking still.

Much later, he was roused by the sound of hooves clattering outside. He stood by the window of their room and watched as black clad riders gathered outside the inn, their horses as black and ragged as their riders. There was something eerie and frightening about them. Looking to his left, where a wing of the inn elled from the rest of the building, he saw the soft shimmer of white. Ceindra was watching this as well, he realized. He wished she would stand back from the window, as he feared her elven glow would attract these strange creatures. As he thought this, the riders rode off into the night, though there was a screeching noise that was deafening which accompanied them. His thoughts of a foreboding future filled his heart once again. He paced for a time then lay his head upon the pillow. He did not rest, however, but stared at the ceiling, thinking, fearing, dark thoughts swirling in his mind. The sky was lightening when he finally stood and began to gather his things together

Erkenwine grinned at Ciryacáno's words of getting him up early. "I was on my way up, Ciryacáno, I'm a good boy." he winked to the elf and walked past him up the stairs to follow Curulindel, leaving Ciryacáno to talk to Strider some more. Up in the room that was shared by all of them, all the males to be precise Erkenwine sat down on a bed and took off his shoes. "No good news any more in these days, Curulindel." The elf, who stood there near the window leaning against the wall nodded. "I know, I can feel the change in the air strongly. Strider's words have made me worried. It seems to happen much faster than we all have thought. Even for Elrond."

Erkenwine sighed and lay down flat on his bed, pulling up the cover and folding his arms under his head like a cushion staring at the ceiling. "well, have a good night, if you do sleep, mellon nín." a small grin appeared on his face as he glanced over at Curulindel who grinned equally and raised a brow. Then the others entered the room as well getting ready to sleep. Curulindel was very restless, he found it difficult to sleep, though he lay down on a bed just resting, his eyes open in thought. He heard the noise in the night, the gallopping of horses and he felt the darkness in his heart. He glanced over to the window where Ciryacáno was obviously watching the scene. What ever it was, it was bad news, Curulindel closed his eyes in sadness.

Curulindel didn't sleep much. Most of the time he had lain there quietly with his eyes open staring around the room, but he felt very rested and fresh when Ciryacáno got up the next morning, starting to pack his things. Curulindel got up quietly as well to follow suit. He didn't want to wake the others yet, especially Erkenwine, he was a man after all, and men needed sleep. Much more sleep than elves. He looked at Ciryacáno asking him with his eyes alone what he had observed in the night, the noise of horses galloping.

The males were suddenly woken ( or the ones that were still asleep) by the sound of heavy knocking on the door. The opened it to find Ceindra, fully dressed, looking panic-stricken. " We have to get out of here. Now!" Cirycano rushed to the door.
" What are you talking about?" He said.
" The riders. I know you saw them too. They're not good news. This morning, I saw Strider leave with four hobbits. And when I went downstairs I found that out horses have gone. Something is badly wrong, and if we want to make good time, we have to find more horses. Does anyone know anywhere where we can get some?"
Cir and Val were unused to her authoritative tone of voice, but the journey so far, however little it was, had changed her slightly already. She was ready to take responsibility and not to be dependant on other people. The feeling that it gave her reminded her of something, although she didn't know what. It was like she had had that feeling before, but she didn't remember when.

When he heard Ceindra's words, Gelmir looked up from his scroll. He had heared the sounds of the riders as well this last night but had tried to ignore all the evil signs.
But all the pieces started to fit together much too smoothly as to be pushed aside any longer. If the one Ring had really been found it would make sense for the Ringwraiths to be abroad again. And although Gelmir was not very learned in the lore of man, he suspected he knew a reason why Lord Elrond would entrust a Ranger with the task to escort it to Rivendell.
All this was indeed quite troubling. While Gelmir had originally joined the group for mere curiousity about a strange piece of information he had drawn from a manuscript, his inquiery might now suddenly be of much more importance then he could have anticipated.
Soon all the parchments were stowed in his pack once more and Gelmir followed his companions downstairs, where they would attempt to find now horses for themselves.

Ciryacáno had laid upon his bed, trying to reach the elven resting state of mind, but failed miserably. His heart and mind were full of dark thoughts and he wanted nothing more but to reach Imladris as quickly as possible. Had he been alone in his travels, he would have left in the middle of the night rather than wait the long hours until sunrise. He was up and preparing to leave as the sky was barely graying. Curulindel rose shortly thereafter and they shared a look of understanding, then both continued packing their things. Gelmir rose quietly and began arranging his parchments, not looking at either of his fellow elves but there was a deeply troubled expression on his ancient face.

"Curulindel, I think it is time to wake Erkenwine. We cannot linger any longer." Cir had barely spoken those words when there was a loud knocking on their door. Cir glanced at Cur, questioningly, and opened it, only to see Ceindra, fully dressed for travel and a wild look in her eyes.

" We have to get out of here. Now!" she asserted.

When Cir had asked her what was wrong, she explained how Strider, the ranger they had met the evening before, had left earlier with four hobbits and a pony. Though this surprised him, he was really shocked when she added that their horses were also gone.

"......we have to find more horses. Does anyone know anywhere where we can get some?" she demanded.

"Gone? What do you mean, gone?" Cir turned to Cur and Erkenwine, who by this time was on his feet and gazing curiously at Ceindra, who was anything but the flirtatious, chattering elf maiden from the previous evening. "We must see to this at once. Erkenwine, you know this town and its people. Is there a way we can find our own horses or a way to get new ones if need be?" Cir's heart ached at the loss of his beautiful steed. Where could their horses be? Had someone stolen them? Or simply hidden them on behalf of the traveler's when the riders in black appeared the night before?

The group grabbed their traveling gear and descended into the tavern. Cir let Erkenwine lead the way as they approached the tavern keeper. He was known here and could perhaps get a more honest response to their request regarding their horses. Cir leaned forward, whispering , "Erkenwine, our welfare is in your hands. We must make haste. Find what you can from this man."

Ceindra then stepped a little closer to Erkenwine, and pressed something into his hand. It was a purse full of gold coins. There was a lot of money there. " We've got more of a chance if we show the money first." She said simply, and went back to Ciryacano's side.

Curulindel nodded when Cir asked him to awaken Erkenwine. He went over to his bed and bent over him. Curulindel's hair fell into Erkenwine's face making his nose twitch. "the..feathers of..yes..leave 'em alone...the lord of the Eagles..keep the feather..keep..keep..what? whats that.." he sudden sat up in bed staring into the surprised and amused face of Curulindel. "The things you fill your dreams with Erkenwine, it is amusing. Though I would have thought them to be of another kind." Erkenwine's face brightened. "ah, close your mouth, elven boy..." he grinned, then stretched and yawned. A ranger's manner weren't all that delicate and proper. He finally got up, dressed and packed his things together to follow the group downstairs. As they did so, Ciryacáno mentioned something about their horses being missing.

"our horses gone, you mean? I cannot believe that the people of this town would snatch away traveller's horses." Erkenwine said with disbelief. "Maybe they took off in fright." Curulindel suggested thoughtfully. "and whatever for, might I ask you?" Erkenwine shook his head. "Have you not heard the commotion and noise in the night?" Curulindel asked him with surprise. "Is a Ranger not a sleeper alike the feline kind?" Erkenwine pursed his lips over this comparison. "well, if I'm sleeping inside 4 walls, I sleep like a log, mellon nín." he grinned. "so what has occured in the night?" "wild black riders..of the shadow." Curulindel answered. Erkenwine nodded. Indeed, the horses might have taken off in fright for sure. Ciryacáno stressed the haste of having to leave but finding new horses.

Erkenwine stepped closer to the reception where the Innkeeper stood looking at them. Erkenwine felt something being shoved into his hand and when he looked down he saw it was a leather pouch of something. As he raised it up the soft muffled clinking noise told him that it was coins. "well, Sir, I have a very urgent errand for you, to propose of course." he shook the pouch in front of the Innkeepers face like a bell. "5 horses, fresh, strong and fast, in 5 minutes, my good man. How likely would you see this result in success?" he raised a brow and his face was full of youthfull craftiness and slyness. The Innkeeper stared at the pouch in Erkenwine's hand thinking. "come on, I know you well, you know people, I trust you to be of help to us." he leaned closer to the mans ear. "we are on a most secret mission...and you could be the key to its success." well, Erkenwine knew how to make a man's mouth water with pretty words of pride, heroismn and of course money.

Cir stepped forward quickly and placed his hand on Erkenwine's arm, leaning forward to whisper in his ear. "Erkenwine, may I speak with you for a moment." He gently tugged on Erkenwine's arm until the two were some distance from the innkeeper and the rest of their group.

"Before you wave too much money in the innkeeper's face, perhaps it would be wise to ask about at the stable and see if we can find out if anyone might have moved our own horses for safekeeping. I would be truly saddened to lose the horse my father bred for me personally. We can always return to the innkeeper later if we find no trace of our own steeds." He smiled for a moment, "Besides, I would not wish to be the one to spend a lady's money, would you? If you need funds, see me and I will provide them for you." He winked as he let go of Erkenwine's arm and returned to the rest of the group.

"Shall we take a few moments to eat something while we have the innkeeper prepare some food for our travels, my friends? We'll let Erkenwine handle the problem with the horses." He took Ceindra's arm and led her to a round table, pulling out a chair for her and giving her shoulder gentle pressure to sit. He sat next to her chair and quietly said, "Ceindra, it was thoughtful of you to offer money to the ranger but I think we must try other avenues first. He will return it to you when he is done with his search. We do not require the funds I know your father must have given you for your care and needs. But know that we thank you and appreciate your generous offer, my dear maiden."

Ceindra looked at Ciryacano in surprise. " But I don't need it. My father gives me money so that I can afford the best treatment. I have planty of money of my own to get stuff that I need. If that money can help us, then I will not take it back, whether you like it or not."
Cir was obviously surprised by the things she had said. He had no idea that she had that much pride. In truth, Ceindra was beginning to feel a little odd about the amount ofmoney that she had with her. She had noticed that no one else had anywhere near that much, and she realised that she didn't need it. The quicker they could get to Rivendell, the better. And if she could help, then she would. " Please, keep it." She said with a little force in her voice.
Getting up from where they were sitting, she went back over to where Gelmir and Val were standing. " Is the food ready yet? I'm starving!"

Val turned to look at her; he was rather disgruntled this morning - due to the fact that he had a restless sleep (Val never slept well in new places) and also that their horses were gone. Val had been increadibly fond of Cerebil and the horse had been fond of him; Val had raised the horse from a foal and it was like losing a brother almost.

"Yes, it is." Val glanced at Gelmir then back at Ceindra. "Best eat up now. I'll be right back."

Val walked over to his friend. "Cir? What's going on? Do we have a plan?"

Cir looked up from the chair in which he was sitting, lost in thought.

"Plan? I don't really know what to do next. I have no idea where our horses could be. They were safe in the stable last night and should still be there. I have asked Erkenwine to go and ask some questions of those at the stable. It may be that they were placed somewhere out of danger last night when the black riders arrived. Perhaps you and I could go and ask some questions ourselves. Not that I don't feel Erkenwine cannot do it but the more questions that are asked, the sooner we might find answers." He looked across the room at Ceindra, who was talking with Gelmir. Glancing back up at Val, he smiled. "Our young friend is becoming a .. very forceful personality. I hesitate to think what will happen when we arrive at Rivendell. I fear for Lord Elrond's efforts to keep her tamed." He grinned at Val. "She is growing up quickly, our little maiden is. You'd best keep your eye on her or she will be lost from you before you can blink."

Watching a reddening of Val's cheeks, Cir rose to his feet. "Come, my friend. We can worry about Ceindra later. Right now, we have more important things to worry about. Let's go give Erkenwine a hand and question some of the lowly stable boys to see if they know more than they have told to anyone. It is one thing we elves can do better than the rangers...look into the minds of those we question and judge truth from lie." With that, he walked over to where Ceindra, Gelmir and now Curulindel were quietly talking and nibbling on the food that was laid out. He wrapped his hand around Cur's arm and pulled him away from the other two.

"Cur, could you stay here with Ceindra and Gelmir, if you will? We would like to do some further search for our own horses before we are compelled to purchase new ones." He gave Curulindel a light pat on the shoulder, then turned back to Ceindra and Gelmir.

"We will be back shortly. Enjoy your breakfast. Ceindra, will you attend to our traveling food, please. Be sure the innkeeper has packed enough as it will be several day's travel to Rivendell. Thank you, dear lady. I truly appreciate your seeing to this."

With that, he turned and headed for the door, listening for Val to follow him. He went directly to the stable, noticing Erkenwine already talking to the stable master. Cir's eyes searched for the youngest stable boy he could see, finding him half hidden behind a bale of hay in a back corner of the stable and watching the Ranger and his master talking. His look was one of disbelief at what the master was telling the Ranger. Cir knew he had found his target. He quietly approached the young boy, who could hardly have been more than 10 years of age. Cir sat on the bale of hay, looking in the opposite direction from the youngster and chewing on a piece of straw, but speaking very quietly to him, nonetheless.

"Tell me your name, child. Mine is Cir. I'd like to talk with you for a moment. You may stay where you are. No need to come out in the open." His voice was very soft, gentle and calming to the young boy, who felt compelled to answer. "My name is Thad, Sir Cir," he whispered.

"Thad, is it? Interesting name. I should like to know the meaning of its background but I'm afraid I have more pressing issues at the moment. Tell me, Thad, what can you tell me about our horses. I know you know where they are, do you not?" Thad gasped, then pulled further back into the shadows behind the bale. "Yes, Sir Cir. But the master will have my head if I tell you." His voice was frightened and on the verge of tears.

"I'll tell you what, Thad. If you can help us, we will help you. How would you like to become our special horsekeeper? It would mean you would have to travel with us to Rivendell, but we would see to it you would be well fed and cared for. And we would pay you well for your services. Enough perhaps for you to build your own horsekeeping business when you return to Bree. Could we strike a deal, do you think? The only thing is....we need our horses if you are to come with us to care for them. What say you?"

The boy was quiet for a long moment, thinking about what Cir had offered and what it would mean to him and his family. It took no more than a heartbeat for him to reply. "Sir Cir, I know where your horses are. I will tell you if you will take me from here with you. I will serve you well, Sir, that I promise you."

"I know you will, Thad." With that, Thad told him where the horses were hidden. "Very well, let us retrieve our horses and then we shall be ready to leave at once. You won't have a problem leaving at once, will you?" Cir knew that the moment he confronted the stable master with his knowledge of where their horses were being hidden, the master would be searching for the traitor who spilled the beans. It would be far better for Thad to be long gone before that happened and Cir knew Thad was aware of that. He was not surprised when Thad told him he would be ready the moment they were. Cir smiled. They had their own horses and now they even had a loyal lad to care for them. It was becoming a good morning after all.

Cir told Thad to stay where he was and rose to his feet, still chewing the piece of straw. He ambled over to where Erkenwine and the stable master were still talking. "Good morning, stable master. We have come to retrieve our steeds, which you have hidden for us." He mentioned the hiding place in an offhanded manner. "We cannot tell you how grateful we are that you protected them from the black riders but now we would like to have them saddled and readied for us to leave within the next 10 minutes, if you will. Thank you again, kind sir, for we love our horses very much."

He turned and winked at Val and Erkenwine and tugged them both along with him as he returned to the Inn to gather together the rest of the group. He chuckled as he told them all that they were about to add a new member to their journey, explaining what had occurred in the back of the stable.

Ceindra was interested in the young boy that would be coming with them. She always enjoyed spending time with young children, they were so full of life, so...like her. At once, she motioned for the innkeeper to come over. He was carrying several large bags of food, carefully prepared and wrapped. " Is this enough, Sir?" He asked. " If it is not, we can always get you some more."
Ceindra smiled at the slightly reddened face of the innkeeper. A little flirting always got her what she wanted. And more than enough food was perfect. She looked at Cir, and winked.

((not much I can rp, since you already moved Erkenwine yourself and made him do what was needed, so.. sorry so short))

Erkenwine was very surprised when Ciryacáno suddenly adressed him and told him not to do what he had in mind. It seemed as if Ciryacáno knew exactly what needed to be done. Erkenwine wasn't an Elf and he couldn't sense as Elves could sense. He gathered that Ciryacáno sensed exactly where the horse might be and that they probably still were closeby. He turned to Cir bowing his head. "Hír nín, I'm but a Ranger that can read the tracks in the forest and on the earth, but I do not have your sensitivity with which you might forsee things. I ask you, to lead the way yourself and I shall follow you in retrieving the horses." Erkenwine smiled at Ceindra and returned the pouch of coins to her. "I know you meant well, my beautiful. As a Ranger, I do not usually have a lot of gold to call my own. I guess you knew." he bowed to the young elven maiden and smiled at her sweetly. Then he turned and followed Ciryacáno to the stable.

In the meantime Curulindel helped Ceindra and Gelmir to get travelling food and other utensils for making arrows and similar necessities.

Erkenwine let Cir handle the stable master and once everything was done followed him back to the group, that was already waiting with their small travelling bundles.

Val felt his cheeks redden slightly at Cir's comments; had he reallly been that transparent lately? The blonde elf followed his friend, outwardly calm, but thinking hard within. He had not meant for any feeling other than warm friendship towards Ciendra to be noticed - least of all by her. Romance was not something Val really wanted a part of - it was troublesome and besides, Ciendra was as fiery a maid as could be had. Beautiful yes, but tempermental and somewhat spoiled and...still eager and kindhearted.

Val shook his head and quickly returned himself to the present. This was not the time to think of such things. He realized Cir had walked away from him and had approached a small boy - Erkenwine was still talking to the stable master. He suddenly felt a little out of place and awkward.

The disgruntled feeling from earlier mounted and he grumpily wondered why Cir had brought him along, but quickly squashed the mood. No need to be so ill-tempered. Val rubbed his head; what in the world was wrong with him today?

His good mood returned as Cir ambled over and spoke to the innkeeper. Cir's mood had certainly improved; no longer was the elf obsessing and such. That was well; Val's relief caused him to smile - a smile that turned into a grin when Cir winked.

Once they returned to the inn, Val sighed inwardly as Ciendra smiled sweetly at the innkeeper. The girl was shameless at times...yet she was also rather adorable when she worked at it. Val quickly looked away and turned to Cir.

"I guess that is everything." he said slowly. "But my friend, is it wise to take so young a human on this journey? He is a child and it may be rough."

(Val is very grumpy, lol. Hm well, he'll get over it. lol.)

Cir was feeling very satisfied with the outcome of his sojourn in the stable. They had their horses back, Ceindra had gotten enough food for them to travel onward, and they had someone to care for their horses en route. In fact he was feeling rather smug...until he looked at the faces of his companions. Ceindra, when she wasn't flirting with the innkeeper, seemed at ease now, even though he had almost scolded her earlier about the issue of money changing hands.

But Val was looking grumpy and disgruntled. His face had lost some of the flush over Cir's teasing him about Ceindra but he looked somewhat lost, as though wondering just what was expected of him.

And Cir was most concerned about Erkenwine. He had sent the Ranger off on an errand and then superimposed his own efforts over the work of the solid trustworthy man and had probably made him feel rather useless and embarrassed. He didn't know exactly what Erkenwine was feeling but the look on his face made Cir uncomfortable.

"My friends, before we continue on to Imladris, I must say something to you all. I apologize for be overbearing and obstinate. This entire adventure seems to be bringing out the darkest side of my nature, attitudes and behaviours even I have trouble recognizing. I beg your forgiveness and understanding. Though my head still throbs from its wound .. was it only a day or two ago? .. it is no excuse. I have not been sharing responsibility with you, all of whom are more than capable, but taking the full burden of this experience on my own shoulders. I am dreadfully sorry. I promise you I will try harder as we journey on. We must work as a team if we are to succeed."

It was a rather long speech for Cir to have made but it was the content that most likely surprised his companions. He who was always so sure of himself to be admitting such blatant flaws would be amazing to any who knew him. But he felt it important to do so, as he knew he had ridden roughshod over his friends.

He gathered his traveling pack and glanced at his friends for a moment, the normal twinkle of humor returning to his beautiful eyes. "Speaking of team work, I must go collect the newest member to our team. And Val, I know he is very young, but his age belies his experience. Did you know he has been a stable hand since he was five years old, mucking out the stables for less than a penny a week. He is very brave and courageous and work hardened. He will more likely to be safe and well cared for with us than staying here. He will return here with enough coins to build his own stable with the help of his family. And frankly, I would trust an infant to his gentle hands. He truly loves horses and will care for them well."

With that said, Cir told them he would be waiting for them with the horses and to please come as soon as they were ready. He then left his companions to go and find Thad. He found the youngster standing with the group's horses, currying one of them and speaking softly to the steed, who was nuzzling Thad's shoulders. "Thad, are you ready, my child?" Cir asked. The boy turned at the sound of Cir's voice and the look of joy on his face would have lit the entire stable had it been night time.

"Oh yes, Sir Cir. And the horses are all saddled and ready to go." His head sunk low and he stared at the ground when he spoke his next words. "Will it be alright if I bring my pony, Jordy? He would miss me if I left him behind....Sir Cir."

Cir placed his fingers under Thad's chin, lifting it until their eyes made contact. "Thad, of course you may bring Jordy. We could hardly expect you to run the entire way. And you are correct. I spoke to Jordy and he would be bereft without you." Cir smiled gently. "Go get him, my boy...but hurry. We are ready to leave." As the child scampered off to get his pony, Cir waited for his traveling companions to regroup here by their horses so they could leave Bree while the sun was still only rising in the eastern sky.

Ceindra ran her hands of her steed's soft muzzle. He nuzzled her shoulder. The bond between the two were clearly visible, and just before she mounted him, she leaned her head against his nose. He did not move, but stood still. " Thank you for staying here, my friend." She whispered. Once she was upon his back, she looked down to Val. His expression was hard to read, but he was not at ease.
" What's the matter Val?" She asked.

Gelmir had repacked his pack plenty of times already, but there was simply no way to fit all the manuscripts and parchments in it along with the few other things he carried. It would have to remain as it was- scrolls sticking out at wild angles. He sighed and strapped the pack onto his horses back after he had joined the group outside.
Softly stroking his neck Gelmir comfortingly whispered to his steed. He had not been overly worried about the pssible loss of it as he was sure it would have made it's way back home. Nevertheless his heart rejoiced for not having to part with it so suddenly and so soon.
One by one the rest of the group arrived and soon the boy Cir had talked about also came back leading a pony saddled and ready to go. He smiled down to the youngster and waited for them all to move on.

Val jumped and glanced over at the maid. "Nothing." he stated softly, then trotted ahead to ride next to Cir. The group was together now and they began to ride to the edge of Bree; it did not take them long to reach the gates and the road beyond.

Val rode beside Cir, but said little. He felt a little better now that they were away from the town and in the wilderness. Val saw Cir looking at him and quickly smiled reassuringly. "It is good to be on our way." he stated. "How long does Erkenwine think it will take us to reach Rivendell?"

Curulindel raised his brows in surprise when he saw a young human boy come along with Ciryacáno, Val and Erkenwine wondering if something had happened to the horses or what the boy would tell. But he soon learned that Cir had decided to take the child along with them on their journey to tend the horses when they rested. Curulindel smiled and nodded to the boy. "Mae tollen, hên anu nín
Erkenwine had returned to the group with leading the horses along and after Ciryacáno's speech he winked to Thad and mounted his steed, ready to go. Curulindel followed suit and a short while later the whole party had started to ride out of the town of Bree on the long East-West Road towards Rivendell. Erkenwine was relax and cool. He was very easy-going and had a sunny character, even in the face of danger. Only if one observed him closely, could one detect that his ears and eyes were very open to everything around him. Thats why he picked up Val's words, who rode in front of him next to Ciryacáno. "How long to Rivendell? its about 7 - 8 days by foot, so depending on how fast we ride we might make it in 3 - 4 days." he smiled at Val then glanced good-natured at his friend Curulindel who rode by his side, silently.

((just in case you think thats awfully long, but in the book/film it says, its 6 days to Rivendell from Amun Súl, which is about 1 1/2 days from Bree )

Ciryacáno was grateful to be on the road again. The time in Bree had been wearing on him; the Black riders, the incident with the horses, the time wasted. Thad was trotting along on his pony next to Cir, his smile beaming. Cir had paid the stablemaster a sum of coins for the young apprentice, a thing that troubled him greatly. Paying for a living person seemed so terribly wrong yet he was glad he had when he looked at Thad. The child was obviously far better off now than he had been as a slave to the stablemaster.

Val spoke a single word to Ceindra, "Nothing," and rode up on the other side of Cir, who was talking quietly to the youngster. Cir glanced at Val, who smiled widely, saying "It is good to be on our way." Then he asked how long Erkenwine thought it would take them to reach Rivendell. Erkenwine, who was riding right behind them alongside Curulindel, heard the question and called forward to Val.

"How long to Rivendell? It's about 7 - 8 days by foot, so depending on how fast we ride we might make it in 3 - 4 days." he said.

Cir smiled over his shoulder at Erkenwine. "Thank you, Erkenwine. I'm glad we're not on foot then. Even so, three or four days will certainly mean that we will have to camp along the way. I'm certain you must know a few good places for us to do this." Noting that Ceindra and Gelmir had dropped behind, so busily chatting were they, Cir added softly enough that they could not hear. "We do, after all, have a maiden and an elder who has not traveled much to consider." He was in no mood to destroy the lovely day with an argument from Ceindra because he was treating her differently then the men of the group....and he knew she would definitely argue the point. He glanced at Val and winked.

They had been riding for many miles, the sun had reached it's zenith as began drifting towards the west, when Cir felt a tug on his sleeve. Looking down, he cocked his head, a questioning look on his face. "What is it, Thad?"

"I'm very hungry, Sir Cir. And Jordy is very thirsty, too. Will we stop for lunch sometime, maybe soon?" he pleaded.

Cir laughed aloud, bending over to pat Thad on the shoulder. "Of course, Thad, but only if you stop calling me Sir Cir. Cir is quite enough." Turning to the travelers behind him, he suggested they all find a place to take a break and have something to eat and drink. "Erkenwine, I leave it to you to find a good place, but we must do it soon. Jordy, Thad's pony is veeerrry thirsty," he said, grinning at them all and hoping they would understand his reluctance to embarrass the child by putting the blame for halting on him. Looking down at Thad, he said, "And you keep your eyes open as well, young man. You will know better than anyone the kind of grass Jordy enjoys."

They rode along until Erkenwine was ready to point out a good spot. Thad also searched the sides of the road, looking for the perfect grass for Jordy. Cir was happy just riding along.

Ceindra was bored. As Erkenwine searched for a place to stop, she sped up so that she was even with Val. " It's funny, I can't remember how you looked when you were covered in mud. I think I might just try to re-live it." She spotted a puddle of mud nearby. She knew that maybe Val wouldn't be in the mood, but she had to try to cheer him up. Smiling innocently, she shoved him again, and he toppled over. " Sorry. Couldn't resist." She said, smirking.

Val once again had been so lost in thought that he had not noticed Ciendra until it was too late. Sputtering, he stood.

"By the Valar, Ciendra!" he exclaimed. The maiden just laughed. Cir looked like he wasn't sure if he should laugh at the situation, or offer sympathy that Val had been caught off guard again. Thad was staring wide eyed and Val couldn't help but grin at the little boy's expression.

"Yes, we elves can at times be caught off guard." Val said to him, flinging some of the mud off his arms. "But it is a good thing that brown is such a complementary color for me - otherwise I would look horrible, no?"

Thad slowly nodded, still looking a little confused but he smiled as Val grinned at him again. Cerebil snorted and shook his head as Val approached.

"I'm sorry my friend, but it is really not my fault." Val stated. The horse's ears twitched, as if to say Val should have payed more attention to his surroundings. Val frowned in a mock-cross manner and looked at Cir.

"Now even my horse feels the need to scold me!" He exclaimed and quickly remounted. "Erkenwine, please tell me there is a stream or something similiar nearby. If not, I'll endure." He glanced at Ciendra out of the corner of his eye; it was about time he got her back for some of this. But not until they reached Rivendell, he decided. That would give him plenty of time to plan.

((so Amun Súl it would be about one days ride, so I hope its ok, if I pretend we've been riding most of this day?))

They have been riding many hours already. The East-West Road was straight and long. No surprises to be found on it. But nature changed a lot around here. To the south there were meadows and fields and behind them small hillocks, the South downs and to the north, they had past Chetwood and a small mountain rising up all by itself. Midgewater, the marshes, were there, just before Erkenwine spotted Amun Súl, the Weathertop, once a watch-tower. He pointed to it it with an outstretched arm and finger. "If you do not mind riding just a little while longer we can camp out at Amun Súl. There is water to be found at the bottom of the hill for the horses."

Curulindel, who had mainly ridden along in silence followed Erkenwine's finger. "indeed, there is water at the bottom of the hill, Erkenwine, mellon nín, but its part of a fly-infested marsh. If we look closely we might find a well near the top of Amun súl." He turned to Ciryacáno. "It is indeed a good place to camp or stay the night." "It is true, I often camp out there when I'm on my journeys." Erkenwine agreed and looked at Thad who was worried for his horse. "it will not be far young fellow, your horse will be able to make it to the weathertop, don't worry about him." Curulindel had unfolded a large leaf that was wrapped around a wafer of lembas, he broke off a bit and riding over to THad bend down from his horse to hand it to him. "This will fill the hole in your stomach instantly, hên anu nín , its elven bread, you will like it, I'm sure." Curulindel smiled and waited for the boy to taste it.

Ceindra was riding beside Val. She was aware of his silence, and wondered what he was up to. Whenever she looked at him, she had to bite her lip to stop from laughing. The mud that covered him was beginning to dry, giving him a comical, sludge-monster sort of look. She was going to make a comment when Erkenwine spoke about Weathertop. " That's strange. It seems that someone's been there quite recently." She said, referring to the scorch marks on the ground, which her elven eyes spotted from the distance.

Though travel on the East-West road was easy going, it was also tedious and tiring. Cir was enjoying the ride, however, as he spent the morning talking to young Thad. As youthful as the lad was in years, he still contained a remarkable knowledge of horses and other animals. As no one had ever paid any attention to him, or ever asked him about anything, he was bubbling over with chatter in response to Cir's questions and obvious interest.

"Too many oats after a fast run will give them a tummy ache, ya know. You can't give them too much for a while, just a handful and only a sip of water until they stop sweating. Better to give them a treat...like a carrot, dontcha know... and a mouthful of water and then take time to brush them down and throw a blanket over them before setting them loose on their meal." He smiled and leaned forward, patting Jordy's neck. "You love carrots, dontcha, Jordy?"

A sudden splash behind them brought the group to a halt....as Val picked himself up out of yet another puddle, covered once again with mud. Looking at Ceindra, Cir shook his head at her childishness. She had begun to show definite signs of the elf-maiden she was to become someday, the descendent of many powerful, regal maidens of the past. Now suddenly she was again behaving like a silly girl. Cir wondered how long it would take for Ceindra to realize that Val had strong feelings for her that would never come to fruition if she continued behaving like an elf-child. Turning, he glanced down at Val as the mud-covered elf spent time assuring Thad that even Elves were sometimes caught off guard, grinning at the boy who tentatively smiled back.

When Val asked Erkenwine to reassure him that there was water somewhere nearby, the Ranger pointed out Amon Sûl ahead, telling Val about the availability of water. For the first time in many hours, Curulindel broke his silence with a slight disagreement with his Ranger friend. He argued that the water at the base of Weathertop was part of the marsh known as Midgewater, probably due to the fact that anyone treading those grounds were virtually eaten alive by the midges, gnats and chiggers. He suggested a well closer to the top of the hillfort. Thad's head turned from the elf to the ranger and back again, wondering only when he was going to be able to get a bucket of water for Jordy and a piece of bread for himself. Curulindel smiled and assured him, "it will not be far young fellow, your horse will be able to make it to the weathertop, don't worry about him." He then handed a piece of lembas to Thad to quell his hunger a bit. Thad bit a small part off the already small piece, tasting it tentatively. His nose wrinkled as he chewed, savoring the unknown flavor and trying to decide whether he liked it or not. Before he had come to a decision, his stomach was already feeling ... full. He stared at the remaining piece with wondering eyes. "But I only ate a tiny bit", he said.

Cir smiled his thanks at Curulindel and began riding towards the hillfort. Glancing over his shoulder, he looked back at the group. Curulindel and Erkenwine were riding side by side, speaking quietly to each other. Gelmir was plodding along at the tail end of the group. He had pulled out one of his many parchments and was letting the horse lead the way as he read the ancient Elven script. Ceindra was trotting along side Val, who was once again staring off into space in silence. Suddenly Ceindra called out, "That's strange. It seems that someone's been there quite recently." He followed her eyes and noted the scorched marks that streaked down from the top of the ruins to the earth, where the marks of horses hooves running from the base went off towards the east. "How odd. What could have caused that?" Once again, the deep feeling of foreboding ran through his soul. Whatever it was was pure evil, this he knew. Though the day was warm, he shivered from head to foot.

Looking up from his parchment at Ceindra's remark, Gelmir noted the scorched ground as well. A moment's silence settled on the group. "It seems that whatever it was, has passed east ahead of us. I assume we should be save enough, but nevertheless I would suggest placing a watch." Thad the little boy looked around at the group in fright. Gelmir had not mentioned that the marks looked much as if a fight had taken place here quite recently, as not to scare the boy even more. He was sure the others had noted the same without anyone having to say it aloud.
Soon they reached their destination for this day. Camp was set up soon as they had enough experienced travelers among them. Even Gelmir had done his bit of traveling when he had been younger. That was however before he had settled at the havens, so Cir could not know. Nevertheless his remark along the road had provoked Gelmir to snort his disagreement, not looking up from his scroll however.
They had settled around a small fire and started eating. The provisions from Bree were so plenty thanks to Ceindra, that everybody could fill their empty somaches. Gelmir was just about to return to one of his scrolls when he sighed in frustration. He had spend another day bent over his manuscripts without getting a step further. He was more eager then ever to reach the libraries of Rivendell soon.
Looking up at the others he asked his companions: "What do you know about the Istari?"

Erkenwine urged his horse to follow Circycano and the others up the small hill that made up Amun Sul. He listened to everyone noting on the scorch marks and then shrugged: "Well, like I said before, I often stay here on my travels and I gather that I am not the only one thinking this a good place to set up camp. It was after all a watch tower and its position is very favorable if you need to overlook the area." once they stopped at a place to make a fire he sat down around it near the rest of them, throwing broken branches into the fire he looked at Cir and Gelmir. "I agree with you though, we must have someone up to watch. I will start, if you like and if I get tired, someone else can take over for the reminder of the night."

Curulindel had opened his leather bag and took out some lembas to nibble on. He handed some of it over to Erkenwine. "Would you like to have some Lembas, muindor nín." Curulindel called him 'brother' but they were only brothers in soul, there was otherwise no bloodconnection anywhere down their family lines. Erkenwine nodded and accepted some lembas. "and would you, or anyone at all, like some dried meet that I carry with me?" he looked around while his fingers nestled in his bag to pull out the mentioned food. The night was slowly settling as they ate and spoke. Curulindel glanced at Gelmir when he asked about the Istari. "What is it you want to know about them, mellon nín?" Curulindel asked, of course everyone knew what an Istar was and what they did and how they functioned. Therefore Gelmir must have been asking something in particular.

((argh, I'm sorry I forgot what Gelmir is, I thought he was an Istar, but I gather he's an elf, right? sorry about that..maybe the confusion in my head arose, cause the istar in my thread is called Gildin...another G-name *grins*))

((OOC: Yep, he's an elf.))

When they had set up camp on the top of Amon Sûl, Curulindel had offered some lembas to Erkenwine, who in turn offered the group some dried meats. Cir smiled his thanks but suggested that perhaps he ought to save it for when they really needed it as they still had much of the food packages that Butterbur had packed for them before leaving Bree.

Cir had been lost in thought when Erkenwine offered to take the first watch. Cir nodded, though he doubted he would rest this night. He moved to sit next to Thad, who's chatter somehow lightened his heart.

Thad was full of excitement. Never had he been so far from home and his eyes were like saucers most of the time. The boy had seen but few elves in his short life and those only from a distance. To be seated among five of them...and one of the mysterious rangers too...was more than he ever imagined. And to think he was going to the mythological Rivendell, that was chock a block full of elves, well, it was just too much. But the day had been a long one, full of so many new and strange sights and sounds that the 10 year old, who was still very much a child, was struggling to keep his eyes open. Cir chuckled as the boy's head toppled against his shoulder. Gently pulling Thad into his arms, he stood and carried him to a sheltered corner and lay him upon a blanket, wrapping the end of it around the boy. Thad never woke and merely sighed and snuggled further into the blanket.

Cir rejoined the rest of the group beside the fire. The group talked quietly among themselves but Cir remained silent. He became aware that what was troubling him was not what had been or what was now but what was yet to come. The horse tracks and the fire scorches were probably left by earlier travelers who had passed this way. Erkenwine had said it himself, "It was after all a watch tower and its position is very favorable if you need to overlook the area." No, what Cir was seeing was what had not yet occurred. But what did it mean? Many in his family were able to foresee the future but he had never known that trait in himself before now, yet...... He was seeing a battle in his mind and the evil creatures he envisioned were more frightening than he had ever known. In the midst of his troubled thoughts, Gelmir's words invaded his mind.

"What do you know about the Istari?"

Cir's visions disappeared and the question shook him to the quick. His head came up and he stared at Gelmir, the words swirling in his head. Before he could absorb the meaning, Curulindel, who was sitting at his side, asked, "What is it you want to know about them, mellon nín?" Something shook his sleeve and he looked down to find Thad just behind him. The child whispered, "What is an Istari? Is it a monster?" Cir grinned.

"No, Thad," he answered. "An Istar is a wizard. Have you ever met Gandalf on one of his trips through Bree?" Thad nodded his head. "He is an Istar, Thad." With an uncertain expression on his face, Thad said, "But he's just an old man."

"Oh yes, Thad, that he is. He is very very old, more old than even you could ever imagine." Cir smiled and tousled the boy's hair. "Go to sleep, young one. We have long days yet ahead of us." Thad crept back to his blanket and curled up, falling back to sleep almost immediately. Cir waited for Gelmir's response, wondering where that question came from, here in the middle of nowhere.

Ceindra leaned back against one of the statues of the old watch tower. She wasn't too intrested in the Istari. She'd heard it all before. Instead, she let her eyes wander across the land below. She thought that she saw something small moving quite far away, but it was too far to be able to tell. Besides, it wasn't strange to see something moving, even here in the Wilderness. She smiled as she remembered the tales that her friend, Princess Narya, had told her of her traveles with the Rangers and the Rohirrim. She was so lost in her thoughts that she jumped when someone suddenly spoke to her...

Gelmir looked around at the others, thinking. How could he explain? It was too early yet to speak of his suspicion openly before it was more founded. And for that purpose he would not only have to reasearch on the subject of the Istari but also on another theme of ancient lore- the Palantir.
"Well. I have been immersed in the lore about them for some time now. In fact this is the very reason why I have joined you on this journey. I have wanted to see the libraries of Rivendell for a long time, but now I want to research something in particular."
Again he paused for a moment wondering how to continue. It was a delicate matter. Finally deciding on how to make it sound quite harmless he said in a matter-of-fact sort of voice: "You are surely aware that in the old texts of the havens the arrival of more then the tree is recited. Not only Saruman, Gandalf and Radagast are mentioned but also two others, in the manuscripts called the 'Blue Wizards'. Have any of you ever heard mention of them?"
He fell silent again. Waiting for any reply.

Cir smiled as his thought went back to his mother and Gandalf sitting on the stone bench under the great tree in the garden of his home. They had been talking about many things, as his mother was very much interested in the passage of time and the events that had occurred here in Middle Earth and loved to tap into Gandalf's mind whenever he stopped for one of his short visits. Cir would sit nearby reading but now and then, something would interrupt his concentration. The Istari conversation was one of those times. Now, many years later, he was once again hearing about them from Gelmir.

"I recall Gandalf mentioning the Blue Wizards once. Alatar and Pollendo...no, Pallando, that's it...right? One was sent with Gandalf, Sauruman and Radagast and that one brought along a friend...or something...I don't remember which was which though. Both were sent into the east, weren't they?" Cir's mind, though usually very astute, was still reeling from his vision and he was having difficulty returning to the every day kind of conversations.

He looked around the group sitting beside the lowering fire and noted varying degrees of interest in the question. Ceindra looked bored and seemed full of her own thoughts. Val still had his faraway look on his face. Curulindel seemed to be the most curious of the group about Gelmir's question, other than himself. Glancing over his shoulder, he noted that Thad seemed to be definitely sound asleep.

"What do the rest of you know about them?" Cir asked, looking from face to face. "And why do you ask, Gelmir? 'tis a strange question to ask here in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night."

"That it is." Val spoke for the first time that night. He had spent most of the time cleaning himself off in the water that Erkenwine had thankfully pointed him too earlier. His clothes were still dirty but at least there were no longer clumps of mud in his hair.

"I know very little about the Istari." the blonde elf continued. "I am afraid I never studied much of anything really."
