Post Beyond The Horizon (TR)
on: May 18, 2011 08:40
Hello everyone, well I am new to the Council of Elrond, and I was wondering if anyone would like to write a story, at the moment I am not quite sure as to what kind of story but I was hoping it could start off in Rohan as I wanted to involve Leah.

Perhaps she could go on an unexpected adventure with an unlikely group of friends (or a group of people who become her friends) and ends up doing and seeing things she never thought she would for a farmers daughter and a serving girl who has never held a sword in her life? Her profile is rough of course, I will have to edit it most likely but that is basically her. Any interest/ideas?

Hi there! What age were you hoping to RP in? Because I have a Fourth Age character I'd love to use again since the other thread she was in died out: Rhîwenil. She's from Linhir but can easily be placed as needed.

A lot of plotlines (typical romances, battles, searching for a lost item) have been done so it might take a little thinking to come up with a more unique one. Perhaps Leah wants to find out the truth of her heritage? Or she aspires to learn a trade? Personally I'd love to do more sea exploration since not much is mentioned beyond voyages to the Undying Lands and the Corsairs of Umbar.

Hi there Dinenlasse, Fourth Age characters sound good to me since I was going to make Leah about 21? Rhîwenil sounds lovely.

It is funny you mention it, sea exploration that is because I have this 'Captain Jack Sparrow-esque' character in my mind who could "lead" them on some kind of adventure? Perhaps Leah could aspire to learn a trade, and it so happens that she stumbles upon some sort of sea expedition for something or other, and along the way could find out the truth about her heritage? Too much, or not very interesting? I am up for anything to be honest, romance, battles and searching for lost item included?

Also, I have a couple of Rohanian characters I can bring in to (though I've never crossed my characters in an RP before!).

Hmmm, so long as we keep it canon, your Jack Sparrow-esque character would be a very interesting character to work with. What kind of captain would he/she be?

That actually does not sound like too much to accomplish so long as you don't do too much at one time. Then it just gets confusing! Leah could want to become a sailor (something that is unusual for the time!) or some sort of sea-faring trade. A little outside research wouldn't hurt if you're not sure. Rhen has family in Belfalas and could fit in very well in aiding Leah. She herself was trying to discover a mystery of her own in the other thread so maybe that could be her own plotline?

Overall, your ideas sound VERY interesting! And a little bit of love and some trouble with pesky corsairs could mix things up!

Finally, you can just call me Dinen if you'd like.

The more characters the better. Aah yes, don't worry, the Captain was going to be a purely Tolkien character, but I will do a bit of research for him if in fact I do create him. Again I have to do a bit of research but I was thinking he would have been a knight/soldier of some sort but abandoned his post for some unknown reason and became somewhat of a morally ambiguous sailor/Captain of a ship he may or may not have stolen? If you were asking about personality wise what he would be like I think he will see his crew as his family, but he may also give you up for a fair price. This is a very rough idea for a character obviously and will be sorted once I create a background with actual Tolkien history/research and whatnot.

Right, maybe instead Leah simply takes to the sea to get to where she is going to enter into the trade of her desire. I see her as more of a scholar, attempting to go into something intellectual or healing? But then things go array and she ends up having to pitch in as one of the crew rather than as one of the passengers. And along the way she could find out about her heritage and they could discover the mystery your character seeks?

Thanks Dinen your encouragement and ideas are wonderful, I am already excited! Just out of curiousity who were the other characters you were thinking about?

Thank you BerethEdhellen for the warm welcome and your advice/help was very helpful and informative.

Hello Nínimelle, may I call you Nín? Of course you are welcome to join, everyone is welcome, the more the merrier! Your character Arafi looks lovely, I am looking forward to writing with you and Dinen.

By the way, I forgot if I mentioned it or not but you can call me Lily.

Right, after a bit of thought about Leah I really think I have enough to work with. Would you mind terribly Dinen if I didn't create another character? They could still go sailing however. Perhaps they could sail the River Entwash to Minus Tirith as Leah’s destination, because she wants to join the Houses of Healing? Though whether or not they would let her become a Healer I don’t know, maybe that could provide a point of tension?

From Rhîwenil’s history I gather that the mystery of the Rhedhadin is her quest, where would they travel to answer such a mystery? Originally I thought Dol Amroth would be the place, correct me if I am mistaken, but in her history that is where she did not want to go because she feared that she would be betrothed to someone? Wherever the answers, the journey sounds fun and maybe even amusing? I think for Leah the most important thing is for her to live a little bit, weather or not she finds out that she is half-elf, or rather that she pursues it is unimportant.

What do you think Dinen, Nínimelle? We don’t have to use this idea either, and feel free to edit, add, or make up an entirely new idea.

A couple of things:: The other characters I had mentioned were Díore or Llweryn. They are both located in Rohan and have varying backgrounds. The three ladies are my best developed characters.

Of course you don't have to create another character right now! That choice is yours alone. From the bio I read about Leah, she is a very strong character already and could definitely provide enough material to work with. I tend to bring in other minor characters not in the db for a post or two, sometimes more, to provide some internal interactions.

As for Rhîwenil, her quest to find information on the Rhedhadin would begin in Dol Amroth because there would be the best archives and resources available plus some of her kin reside there. She is acquainted with her noble relatives but does not desire such a life herself. The quest for the Rhedhadin was the plotline for my The Legacy of Ivriniel thread which has since died and does not necessarily have to be resurrected. I'd love to continue it since it is an intellectual endeavor rather than a purely physical one, something your Leah might enjoy.

But this is your story with your character. What do you want her to be? Perhaps her family wants her to marry a nobleman, but Leah would prefer to pursue the life of a scholar or healer. Thus, as you suggested, she travels to Minas Tirith to see what she can do, using possible connections she has or something. To continue, maybe they do not want her because she's too young or inexperienced but then a matron decides to make her an apprentice. You can add in a love story or tension or internal political struggles.

It's hard to come up with some good plotlines, however. I tend to do some research on an obscure topic no one has written much about and run from there. That was the premise of the Legacy of Ivriniel. Tolkien makes a passing reference to Ivriniel, and I chose Rhen to be her descendant. Back in the history of Dol Amroth, the first lord had a sister who mysteriously disappeared, and I brought that knowledge into play...it's things like that that make for a good story. Maybe there's an aspect of Tolkien's Middle Earth that fascinates you (Dol Amroth and Belfalas are my favorites!) and you'd like to explore it more.

Wow, sorry for that REALLY long post, but I hope I gave you some things to think about. Do we want to go on a rollicking adventure, do we want an intellectual quest, do we want a little bit of inbetween? Do we want to sit around a tavern's fire swapping stories?

Díore and Llweryn are also wonderful characters Dinen, and very much welcomed if you want to use them. Oh that does sound like quite an interesting quest and storyline for Rhîwenil, and yes Leah would enjoy an intellectual quest immensely. I imagine that she is the sort to have read about the history of Middle-Earth, and the different races and such but never actually seen or experienced anything beyond Rohan, and only a very small part of it consisting of West Emnet and Edoras?

Nín how Arafi would actually fit into the story I am not quite sure but I figured that he is often in Rohan and that is as good a reason as any for him to run into Leah somehow? Perhaps she meets him in Edoras, or even on the way to Edoras, and noticed that he is an elf and her curiousity gets the better of her and so she abandons her shy ways for a moment and strikes up a conversation with him? I don’t know really but the simplest of things could be his entrance if you like? To be honest I would love to have a group of people who don’t seem to fit anywhere else but somehow come together (like the fellowship of the ring, Legolas and Gimli did not get along at first- unless I am wrong and can’t remember from the actual books which is quite possible as it has been a while since I have read them).

Lovely ideas Dinen, I think somewhere inbetween a rollicking adventure and an intellectual quest. I would like her to learn how to use a sword at some point, and/or a bow and arrow (Nín perhaps she is terrible with the sword and so Arafi suggests she tries the bow, I don’t know). I think the thing about Leah is even though she is not particularly experienced she does know things, mainly horses, and her skills in that area are a lot better than she gives herself credit for, however she is terribly naïve and innocent so she is not very worldly.

As to the history I think that is a fantastic idea. To be honest everything fascinates me.
I have been trying to sort out Leah’s mother Merilwen’s history. At first I wanted her to be part of the Vanyar because of their light hair but then I realised that all of the Vanyar left Middle-earth so that was out of the question, and then I thought that perhaps she could have been Sindarin and lived in Lothlórien and sometime after Galadriel and Celeborn had crossed over into the West she too was ready to cross over but then Merilwen met Baldor and fell in love with the horse lord, and so she stayed until the end of her days. I don’t want Leah to be noble or royalty. But I do want her to be important, or carry something very valuable/important for some reason that she inherited from her mother… I just haven’t found that reason yet, perhaps once we start writing I will find a reason, or if either of you can think of a reason that would be lovely. I am open to anything really.

To continue your idea, I think Leah would prefer to lead the life of a healer but as you said Dinen perhaps she could be rejected because she is too young and inexperienced. Maybe her father means for her to marry a nobleman when she arrives in Minas Tirith but she does not know of this? Leah could as easily become an apprentice as well and there could be a love story, tension, and internal political struggles, honestly I like all of your ideas.

If you want later on perhaps having got Rhîwenil’s story out of her about the Rhedhadin over their travels to Minas Tirith (though she is terrifically naïve I would imagine others would find a strange sort of trust in Leah and tell her things) she decides to travel with Rhîwenil to Dol Amroth, with some proper healing under her belt, and convinces her that they will find information on the Rhedhadin?

Speaking of starts where should we start, any preferences? Shall I start with Leah leaving her home for Edoras and then she could meet Rhîwenil, Arafi, Díore and Llweryn somewhere along the way? How long would it take Leah to travel by horse from West Emnet to Edoras on horseback by the way, just out of curiousity?

And you thought your post was long Dinen, hehe, sorry, I tend to waffle.

Perhaps when Leah is on her way to Edoras and on her way, she finds an injured elf(Arafi) From there, they travel together until they either run into Rhîwenil, Díore and Llweryn or until they come in Edoras. That could help Leah with her healing skills and she and Arafi get to know each other.

I think he could help her with archery yes. You were right on the Legolas-Gimli friendship and I think such a friendship we can use as well. Because Leah, Díore, Llweryn and Rhîwenil are all humans Arafi could feel very left out.

I think we should start with Leah leaving her home.

And I think it would take four or five days to Edoras, from West Emnet.

Leah finding Arafi injured along the way and helping to heal him sounds perfect. Then they could travel together to Edoras and Leah would not feel so alone. I would imagine she has never traveled alone before, often with her father to Edoras but never taken the road alone, and she does not want to admit it but is afraid to go alone?

Sorry, waffling again, but yes I think that is a lovely idea and Leah would try to make Arafi feel like he belongs perhaps by confiding in him that Díore, Llweryn and Rhîwenil are all strong women and she feels that she is neither strong nor beautiful like them, and she too feels a bit out of place but also somehow feels as though she belongs with the four of them.

Thanks Nín I edited Leah's profile.

Dinen let me know if this is alright, or if you have anything to add/change/any other brilliant ideas and I will start the thread as soon as possible... once I think of a decent title.

I think Arafi and Leah will form a very good friendship. Because she helps him while he's injured, they get to know each other and then when she tries to make him feel like he belongs they help each other. She by saying he belongs, and he by telling her that she's strong and beautiful.

In keeping with canon and what would realistically happen (especially if we keep it within a medieval frame of reference), how about this? Leah's father and her lord (or whoever she is serving) arranged a marriage for her with a minor artisan in Minas Tirith through a contact of the lord. Her father either personally or sends an escort to Minas Tirith to complete the arrangement. Along the way, Leah meets Arafi and desires to help him and eventually he tags along. Rhen would probably be in Minas Tirith with her father doing research about something, probably the Rhedhadin or something similar and there they meet up. Possibly Rhen is acquainted with the artisan?

Please don't take this the wrong way, Lily, but Leah appears to be a placid character. Thus, she perhaps acts "out of character" by refusing to marry the artisan (or whoever the betrothed is) and instead chooses to visit the Houses of Healing where she finds her niche in healing.

And I apologize if my characters seem a bit strong...they kind of reflect my personality...or so I'm told! I'm not sure if I'll use Díore or Llweryn just yet; I think I'll wait and see how the thread moves along. We could always begin with Leah leaving Edoras for Minas Tirith and so forth. What do you think?

For Leah's inheritance, she could always carry a special piece of jewelry or trinket that her mother gave her when she was little. Does Leah have a good relationship with her father?

And finally, I love waffles!

Another wonderful idea Dinen, and yes Leah is quite the passive and placid character so perhaps she knows about her father’s arrangement with her lord, the arrangement he made for her to be married to a minor artisan in Minas Tirith. Wanting to please her father she would travel to Minas Tirith in the hopes of being the obedient daughter that she is and marrying the artisan. She probably sees it as her duty, or routine, something that should happen, not as a bad thing simply what is. Should Leah be traveling with an escort?

Oh no Dinen, please don’t take what I said Leah would say the wrong way, I love that your characters are strong, I am quite the opposite of Leah so I love your characters and completely understand. I think the fact that Leah is meek and placid means she will be rather intimidated by them at first but I think she will become fast friends with each woman, especially Rhîwenil. I should imagine that Leah would be like Samwise Gamgee and would follow Rhîwenil to the ends of Mordor if she had to.

And leaving from Edoras to Minas Tirith sounds lovely. If you wanted maybe you could bring Díore in somewhere in the beginning when Leah is leaving Edoras? A stray thought, hehe, but again you don't have to by any means as you said you can wait and see how the thread moves along.

It is very good you do because I seem to be doing quite a lot of it.

Hey, sorry to throw a wrench into the plans right as it's about to take off. Do you mind having one more person in here? I know it's a bit late in the game planning but I was shadowing this thread till you all decided on a definite plotline. I think I have a character that would work circumstance-wise. He doesn't have a profile yet but short story is his name is Aroden, and he's a thief. My idea was that his activities have made it a little too unsafe for him in town so he needs to leave. How exactly he gets into the group would depend just on how the thread flows along. He could add a little chafing to the group (which is always fun, it can get a little boring when everyone gets along perfectly) I’ll get a bio up for him in a little if you decide to let him in.

Woohoo, I posted the start of Beyond the Horizon (sorry rubbish title but I couldn't think of anything better) here, feel free to dive right in Dinen and Nín.

Hmm as to how Arafi was injured I have no idea. I would say fallen off his horse but he's an elf, they just don't do that, hehe. On a more serious note, if he is leaving Edoras perhaps there is a reason he was injured, or perhaps he was injured before he came to Edoras, and maybe there is some importance as to why he is traveling to Minas Tirith that makes him not waist any time in Edoras? Maybe because he thinks his injury is not so great but then once on the road he realises it was foolish to continue? And then Leah finds him somehow? Sorry I am really not much help am I?

Welcome Naucoaran, the more the merrier. Your thief character Aroden sounds interesting. Definitely post a link to his profile when you have finished with him so that we can see more about him. Leah is sort of the pillar of good and innocence in a way so maybe she could somehow show him compassion? She would probably try to turn him 'good.' As it says in her profile she is a bit too trusting, so that could cause conflict I suppose with the others, what do you two think Dinen and Nín, would it be plausible and in keeping with canon, I know that there are few thieves in Tolkien's world?

And please don’t think that I am saying no Naucoaran, because really what I am saying is ‘yes please come join us!’ The only reason I ask if thieves are alright is because of this little mention in the Rules section.

One thing that has troubled all the moderators is the overgrown population of assassins, killers, thieves, ruffians, and spies (aside from the other mis-led characters, of course). Tolkien's world certainly had a few but it should be noted that aside from the occasional appearance of a spy or assassin, Tolkien provided enough well described tensions between races, searches, quests, genuine friendships, real enemies, true commaraderie for any number of plots to be created. The Fellowship of the nine need not be the only one. True fellowships (with all the courage, bravery, friendship, sacrifice, integrity and honor that that entails) could be formed, taking Tolkien's beliefs and his world into account. There is so much more to Tolkien's world than elves jumping out of trees and sitting in taverns guzzling ale.

I don’t want to get in trouble or step on anyone’s toes, but one thief in an otherwise good group for the purpose of creating a bit of tension within the group should be alright, right?

I don't think it would be a major problem. He isn't a standard "murderous killer assassin" anyways, he's more of a cutpurse and horse thief, and his fighting skills are probably on par with Leahs This is Aroden by the way, He can change as needed tohugh.

Hello Naucoaran! I don't believe we've ever RP-ed together before, but I've definitely read your work! I look forward to RP-ing with you and everyone! Llwerryn will definitely cause tension with a thief since she dislikes them, so if you don't mind a little occasional distrust and the chance of a blade at Aroden's throat. . .!

I'm pretty sure petty thieves have a place in Tolkien's world. They would have frequented the cities, especially near thriving ports, crossroads, or capital cities.

Could Arafi have had a stubborn battlewound or a severe accident?

Anywho, I checked out the post and thought you did perfectly fine for an introduction, Lily!

I can't wait to write with all of you, admittedly I read a wee bit of what each of you has written in other threads and I am really excited to be writing with such talent! Aww thank you Dinen and Naucoaran, I feel a bit rusty with writing (Literature papers are not the same as storytelling) but I can only improve with time and age sort of like fine wine, or at least I would imagine so.

Lily & company,

Just going to step in here for a sec to reassure everyone that whatever type of "thief" Naucoran develops for this plotline I am assured will be acceptable here. His writing skills have proven themselves (and he knows I'll stomp up and down if he goes too far abroad LOL).

Carry on!

Lovely post Nín, and I posted a reply, I felt like I couldn't leave Arafi lying in the road I hope that's alright. Are we supposed to have some kind of posting order? Or should we simply wait until everyone has joined and then we will naturally fall into some kind of posting order? If it needs to be edited or deleted for some reason let me know, I don't mind.

Just a note, we might want to wait to continue until Naucoaran posts. If we go too quickly, we might fall prey to what's known as "shot-gun" posting, meaning that two or more people keep posting often, leaving everyone else in the dust.

Just a thought!
