Well, things are a bit different in the UK... I'm almost 17 and am in Year 12, which is known as Sixth Form. In about two year's time I might go off to Uni for an Art degree or something, but I'm not too sure just yet. ^^

I'm 13 and live in the UK. I'm in 8th year, which is the system we have here, and I think that is 7th grade in America, but I'm not sure. If any one knows please can you tell me?! (by post or pm). You've no idea how much it is bugging me now.

I'm a senior in high school and trying to figure out where to go to college. I've pretty much made up my mind, but I have to see how much money the schools are willing to give me. Right now, I'd do just about anything to go back to 5th grade, when I had about 30 minutes of homework a night and got recess...man were those the days!

I have absolutely no clue of what grade and how it works.... so I just put Grade 10-12 because it's below Universitly. I'm coming 16 this year, is grade 10 correct?

I have no idea how the American school system works, but I'm in Year 11, I'm 16, and this would be called informerly 'senior school' in Australia. I'm hoping to go to Uni after I grad Year 12 and hopefully take a holiday.

I'll be turning 14 years old in April. I'm currently a freshman in high school (Grade 9), although I'm supposed to be in eighth grade. The reason why is because I skipped second grade, meaning I've went to school all my life with older people around me, which I'm pretty used to by now.

Wow, Orosarniel! You're only 13? I've always been impressed by your posts in Elvish 101. Now I'm even more impressed!

I've skipped a few grades too in my time.

Age: Turning 23 in April

Education: BSc (1st class Honours) Chemistry and Math
PhD (Computational Quantum Chemistry)

American School System is basically listed as it is. Here is a compare to UK:

Primary

Early years: Nursery (3+) and Reception (4 – 5) (not all schools have nurseries) ***Americans: day care and preschool

Key stage 1, or Infant (5-7)***americans: kindergarten, 1st, 2nd grades

Key stage 2, or Junior (7-11). ***americans: 3rd, 4th, 5th grades

Secondary

Key stage 3 (11 – 14)**americans: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th grades

Key Stage 4 (14 – 16)**americans: 8th, 9th (Freshman level in Highschool), 10th (Sophomore level in high school)

Some secondary schools have a sixth form for 16 to 18 years olds. Alternatively, these students can go to a local Further Education college or sixth form college. ***americans: 11th, 12th grades (Junion and Senior level in High school)

Universities usually take students from eighteen. ***america: college, university, tech school, trade school

Thanks V, that's helped quite a lot actually - I've always wondered how the US system worked Seems complicated to me, but that's only 'cos it's different
I'm 15, and in Year 10 at school, so that would make me....9th Grade? Is that Freshman year? Just out of interest, why are they called "Freshman" and "Sophomore?" Do the words mean anything in particular? Are there special exams that year?

These are some formal definitions of freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior for your entertainment Tan! (and anyone else).

freshman-\Fresh"man\, n.; pl. Freshmen. novice; one in the rudiments of knowledge; especially, a student during his first year in (highschool) a college or university. so basically someone who has just started in something and "fresh"

sophomore: \Soph"o*more\, n. [Probably fr. soph or sophister + Gr. ? foolish. The word was probably introduced into the United States at an early date, from the University of Cambridge, England. Among the cant terms at that university, as given in the Gradus ad Cantabrigiam, we find Soph-Mor as ``the next distinctive appellation to Freshman,'' but the term has now almost ceased to be known at the English university from whence it came.] One belonging to the second of the four classes in an American college, or one next above a freshman. (Alteration (probably influenced by Greek sophos, wise, and mros, stupid), of sophumer from obsolete sophom, sophism, dialectic exercise, variant of sophism.)

junior: adj 1: younger; lower in rank; shorter in length of tenure or service [ant: senior] 2: used of the third or next to final year in United States high school or college; "the junior class"; "a third-year student" so basically, second to last,[

senior: adj 1: older; higher in rank; longer in length of tenure or service; "senior officer" [ant: junior] 2: used of the fourth and final year in United States high school or college

Does this make sense?

i never relized how confusing the American system was! the Ontario and all other privinces(x-pt Quebec) goes:
junior kinder.: 4 yrs.
senoir k.:5
grade 1- 6yrs
grd 2- 7 yrs
grd 3- 8 yrs old
and so on until grd 8 then you graduate and go to high school at 14 yrs. old and are in grd. 9 where we have to take french, and if we don't pass we're stuck in grd. 9 'til we :evil:do........ then you go to grd. 12 then to college/uni.

Well I guess you uys wouldn't really care so anyways...lol sorry

Actually, here in BC it is different. There is no such thing as junior k, what is that?!! Or maybe there is now, it's been a few years since I've been in kindergarten...Anyway, elementary school goes from kindergarten (5 yrs old) to grade 7 (12 yrs) and then, depending on what school you go to, junior high is grade 8 (13yrs) to grade 10 (15 yrs) and then highschool is grade 11 (16yrs) to grade 12 (17 yrs). Or, like the school I went to, it could be grades 8 to 12. Complicated, huh?!!

Edited: I totally forgot to address the post!! I'm 18 and in first year of college!!

I'm an old lady compared to a lot of you - mid-40's.

Have a Master of Arts degree (specializing in Psychology).

When I listed my occupation in member listings as healer, I was telling the truth. My highest degree is Doctor of Medicine and I am a neurologist. (Well, there goes my reputation as a normal elf.)
I was born the year that "The Return of the King" was published (original UK publication).

In England, you don't get held back at all - so that means we do have some rather stupid people in our year! But on the other hand it could be better because I think it might be a bit embaressing to be older than all the other kids.

I'm only 13 and in grade 8 because my b-day is late in the year...October 10th...it kinda sucks cause all my friends are older

MrsLG - our system works differently. If you went to school in England you'd be one of the oldest people in Year 8.
The oldest people in the year are born in September (there aren't many of those) and the youngest in August. So, as a November person, I'm among the oldest, hoorah!

I'm 17 and I'm in year 13 (the upper 6th) in Sixth Form. Next year I plan to do a year long art foundation course at my local institute of higher education and then a further, more specialised art course at university.

I'm 13 and I'm in Year 9... I don't know what grade that is in America... I'm guessing perhaps eighth grade? Not sure. :dizzy:
I'm homeschooled though, which is actually quite rare really in London where I live, don't know anybody else who is also homeschooled. But if I was at proper secondary school I'd be Year 9 anyway.

That's so cool! I was going to do Media Studies instead of English but for some reason I decided on English. I think it might have been because my dad thought that it would look good on university application if I did. I wish I had taken Media though. It sounds like so much fun, a couple of my friends are doing it and they really enjoy it. Oh well I suppose English isn't that bad. It's helped me a lot with drama so I guess that's one thing and my English Lang. teacher is kinda cool I suppose. He's mad, he once told us to analyze the Muppets for homework.
