"My Goodness!" Elizabeth gasped, and Miki looked back behind him, hoping that he did not have another hole in the seat of his pants. Thats when he saw the tail his sister had conjured.
"Mika!"he yelled, trying franticly to grab the tail and ending up chasing himself in a circle. Lady Elizabeth giggled, bringing him around. "I'm sorry," he apologized. "But my sister," he grimaced. "Seems to have pulled a trick on me. Give me a second, and i'll get rid of this, um... appendage." Miki uttered some words in an ancient tounge, and pointed at the tail. INstead of the tail vanishing, there was a small explosion, and the spell burned a hole in the wall. "Do you mind if I just eat standing up?" He asked sheepishly.
After breakfast, Miki hurried back to the tower he shared with his sister.
"I'm going to kill you!" He yelled as he reached the top of the stairs.
"If I don't kill you first!" she screeched back at him fumbling with the alces of the pink dress. "Get me out of this thing!"
"Take off this tail!" Both opened thier mouths to shout some more, but knew the outcome of thier fight, and closed thier mouths.
"Truce?"
"Truce."
With a few muttered spells Miki's tail was removed, and the laces on Mika's dress began to fall open.
"You really do like that Lizzy girl, don't you?" Mika asked as she dashed behind her changing screen to change into her ball-gown.
"Yeah,"Miki said, know he couldn't lie to his twin. "But she's after the Prince, as is every other woman in this blasted castel." he huffed, pulling on his best breeches and shirt, followed by his favorite black tunic.
"You really shouldn't be so worried," Mika said, pulling on her dress. "The Prince can only choose one woman, and my bet is on Aroura. Now help me put in these earbobs." Mika came out from behind the screen, and Miki's breath caught in his throat. He almost felt like he was giving the bride away at a wedding, he'd never seen his sister dressed like this. She spun around in a flowing black silk dress that hugged her body just right, with pearl gray bell sleeves that gathered just below each shoulder, showing off her pale neck and shoulders. She was trying to get a pair of black opal earbobs into her ears, but to no avail. Miki came over to help.
"YOu think I have i chance with Elizabeth?" he asked again.
"Of course," Mika told him. "And if not, you can always dance with me."
"You step on my feet."
"Just to keep you on your toes." Mika chuckled back at him. "Why don't we go find Aroura? The ball will be starting soon."

Elisabeth stared at herself in the mirror. She smiled, a secret, sweet smile of someone with a plan that was going to be very fun and wicked. "Perfect." she whispered.

Her hair was down, and swirled around her shoulders in waves of beautiful curls. The sleeves of teh dress were silk and pretty see through. The dress was also low cut and fit her figure perfectly. This was the perfect dress. She opened her door softly and tiptoed down the hall and toward the Prince's room. She knocked on the door. "Your highness, may I come in?"

She smoothed out her dress, uncertainly. This HAD to work. It HAD to if she ever wanted a chance with Miki...

(OK here we go ^__^ ))
Rupert left the Queen's chambers a bit frazzeled. At least she had agreed to his idea. He knew that it would be hard to let Aurora go but deep down he also knew that she could help Denmark if she married to England.
He thought more about it as he went to his room to change for the ball. A few hours later he found himself watching the aray of guests that filled the Great Hall. The previous conversation with Rose was not dwelling on his mind as much now, which was good.

*****
Aurora took one last look in the full length mirror and nodded in approval. She looked at her maid that was still there who smiled widely at her.
She walked slowly down the hall towards the sound of the music. The violins and pipes played a waltz that floated up to her ears. As she came to the top of the stairs she looked down upon a bright room filled with color and swirling bodies. She decended the stairs into the hall watching the dance as she went.
Candles were everywhere filling the room with light. Great tables had been set up along one side of the room and was piled high with food for the guests. There were thousands of women there, all beautiful and a potential bride for Phillip.
Aurora looked around for her father, but did not see him among the swirling mass of people. He had to be somewhere else at the moment. As she stood watching the dance she was aproached by Lord Julius who extended his hand to her.

"My lady, would you care to dance?"

Aurora took his hand with a curtsey, not wanting to be rude, and let him lead her into the midst of the dancers.

"I do not believe that I have seen you around much sir and sadly I do not know your name." Aurora said as they danced around.

(OOC: galadriel, I love your idea of Cassandra thinking she has a rival in Elizabeth. Watch out for her cat claws in later posts... )

Cassandra had finished her bath and was snugly wrapped in a cream silk dressing gown, seated in front of her dressing table. Her hair, freshly washed, was still a bit damp at the ends, but that was no problem. The maid Elaine had set up mirrors around her dressing table so she could supervise how her hair was being done. The rest of the girls were still finishing up her dress. This night would be wonderful, she thought to herself. The prince would fall head over heels in love with her when he saw her, if he hadn't already. There would be tons of other girls and women throwing themselves at Philip, but she could handle them. In her joy, she began humming lightly to herself.

********************

Elaine looked back to see how Micah, Sarah, and Fanny were faring. They were chattering away happily about the prospect of the ball and were still hard at work getting all the silk, satin, and lace properly pressed and in order. It was hard work, because each seam and fold had to be done individually and the lace required even more effort and attention. She turned back to Lady Cassandra, who was humming quietly to herself. Elaine knew she was in a good mood because she hardly snapped at them. And if she did have a harsh word, it was quickly brushed off with a laugh.

Elaine had already pinned up half of Lady Cassandra's heavy golden tresses atop her head. She was working on creating a low wave over her forehead and eventually winding that around strands of sapphires and diamonds, when Lady Cassandra spoke up.

"Elaine, you will be waiting in attendance upon me tonight at the ball," she announced. Elaine was so shocked her hands shook and she almost dropped the pins she was holding on to. The talking behind her had stopped as well. "It would make such an impression on the court that I have such civilized and genteel maids of my own. And you are the daughter of a minor noble. I trust you have something suitable to wear?" she asked, looking at her in the mirror. "I won't have you looking like a common serving girl and embarrasing me."

"No, my lady - ah I mean, yes I do have something suitable to wear, and no I will try not to embarrass you," Elaine stammered.

"Good. Now finish my hair and see to it that you are presentable when I have finished dressing," Lady Cassandra said.

Elaine was forced to calm her nerves while she finished pinning and tucking in the sections of hair that remained. She then wound the ropes of sapphires and diamonds around the crown of her head and through the curls of her hair. Holding a mirror at different angles behind her head, she allowed Lady Cassandra a look at her work. With a regal nod, she dismissed Elaine to be dressed. Making a little curtsey, she left the bedchamber, but not before exchanging wide-eyed glances with the three other girls.

Elaine wasn't lying when she said she had a suitable dress to wear tonight. Cassandra was somewhat of a stingy mistress, but what she did give you was of very good quality. Elaine and the three other girls each had matching dresses in the colors of Lady Cassandra's house - crimson and cream. In a way their dresses were equivalent to the livery of the rest of the household servants. But their dresses were made of fine silk and satin trimmings. They hardly ever wore these dresses, and only on grand occasions when Lady Cassandra was entertaining at home and they were just there for decoration and show.

When she stepped into the dress, Elaine felt transformed. The silk was soft and smooth against her skin, and lightly scented with the aroma of the lilies that she kept in her chest of clothes. The underdress was the color of warm cream and fitted her body perfectly. The long fitted sleeves ended at points above the tops of her hands. The dark red overdress was slipped on next. It had short puffed sleeves, the red slashed with cream underneath. The edges of the dress were trimmed with a thick ribbon of cream stain. The front of the dress was tightly closed with a bow of cream satin ribbons. The dress had a high waist, right under her chest, and the skirt fell open from there in a straight and simple line. Elaine even had matching cream colored slippers.

She had no time to do her hair up as elaborately as she did Lady Cassandra's, so she contented herself with hurriedly braiding her hair, then wrapping the braids around her head and pinning them into a neat coronet.

Since there was no mirror in the room, she entered Lady Cassandra's room to see how everything was progressing, and so she could look at herself. Lady Cassandra was at the other end of the room still getting dressed, so Elaine took the opportunity to look in the mirror. She looked very presentable. Her color was high, her smile was wide. The rose in her cheeks matched the red of her dress. With her hair all pinned up, you could see the elegant stretch of her neck, making her look taller than her 5'3". She was very pleased with the way she looked.

While Lady Cassandra was making her finishing touches and spraying herself with her expensive jasmine pefume, the girls went outside the room in excitement. They exchanged bright and eager smiles and Elaine whispered to them that she would see them at the ball later in the evening. She would try to slip away from Lady Cassandra.

She then turned to look at Lady Cassandra as she came out and she had to admit that she looked gorgeous. The dress was of a deep blue that matched the sapphires in her hair. The bodice was a low cut V, but a frill of white lace kept it from being indecent. It was corseted tightly, laced up with silver ribbons, showing off her figure to the fullest extent. Her shoulders were bared, for the sleeves draped off her shoulders into shimmering waves of white silk embroidered with silver threads. The skirt of her overdress was edged with more white lace and fell in layers and layers of luxuroius folds from her waist. Behind her, the overdress was flowing out into a slight train. The dark blue was in contrast to the white satin underdress. Her dark blue slippers winked with inset sapphires. Her hair was piled high atop her head, but one thick curl was draped seductively over one shoulder. Her golden hair glowed in the candlelight and the diamonds in her hair sparkled. On her ears were large diamond drops and around her neck was a beautiful sapphire necklace. A large tear-drop shaped sapphire hung suspended from a line of consecutively smaller and alternating diamonds and sapphires.

Lady Cassandra must be wearing a king's ransom worth of jewels tonight, Elaine thought. But then again, she is trying to catch herself a future king tonight.

Both women wore similar smiles anticipation as they made their way down to the ballroom.

(Oh! I'm sooo sorry this post is so long. But describing clothes is just so fun! I hope you can picture what I described, but anyway here's a link to Cassandra's dress: http://www.yosa.com/catalog/fantasy/tempest.html It's mostly like the Tempest dress, but the skirt and sleeves I had in mind look more like the Romantic Gown's ones. Elaine's dress - I kind of designed it after Regency style gowns, if you know what that is, with the high waist and simple folds, etc. - think classical Greek gowns :dizzy: )

Rupert left Rose's quarters promptly after their conversation. She was reluctant to send Phillip to Norway, but felt that if it was truly neccessary that she might be persuaded to ask him to go. Either way, she felt that she ought to sent Lord Cartwright as he claimed to know exactly what to do. She contemplated about sending them both, but she really hadn't come to a proper decision.

As for Lord Rupert's idea, she felt sorry for Rupert to see his daughter leave across the seas to a foreign country - she had felt lost leaving her parents when she first came to Denmark so didn't know how Aurora would cope being away from her only living relative.

Lord Rupert was not just her advisor, but one of her very best friends. When she had first come to Denmark and had not been long married to the King, she met Rupert's wife and the two of them became friends. They'd both had their children within a few years of one another - Rose had Phillip first, so was especially helpful to Aurora's mother when it was her turn. She had been very much upset when she had died and went to Rupert promptly to give her sympathy and support. They remained friends, and both of them have felt what it is like to loose a spouse.

((OOC: Aurora - how does this sound re: what I PMed you before? Does it make better sense? Let me know if you want me to make any changes!))

She had agreed with Rupert on his idea finally, and told him that she would make contact with HM The King of England as soon as possible. Now she sat at her desk penning a letter to His Majesty proposing the idea. She'd gone through several drafts already, but had now decided exactly the right words and scribbled an elegant signature at the end.

Sighing, she stamped the royal seal onto the outside and went to the door to hand it to someone to dispatch. At least she wouldn't have to worry about it throughout the ball this evening. That, at least, was a weight off her mind.

She left her writing room and hour or so later and made for her room to prepare for the ball this evening. As she walked, she pondered whether she was to expect her sister and hoped that if she did come that she would behave herself.

She opened her door and went inside and saw her gown laid out on the bed awaiting her handmaidens to help her change and to arrange her hair for her. She smiled at it - it was a red gown. She decided that tonight would be the night that she break away from mourning and begin living again.

Hours later she was changed. Her gown was made of the finest fabric with beads and patterns embroided all over it. Her hair was piled on top of her head and golden ties spun around her hair to secure it. Her gown was low cut and had a long train behind her. She placed a golden tiara crown on top of her head and placed several valuable rings on her fingers. She looked at her wedding ring, but decided against taking it off. She felt that it wasn't the time to, not yet anyway.

Looking at herself in the mirror satisfied, she awaited to be called to the ball and make her entrance, although didn't know if Phillip was to be with her or not.

(Pretty dresses Lyrav! I like the "Duchess gown", so Rose is wearing that one but with red and gold trimmings)

(OOC: Hm, I suppose I should check out these dresses; they sound lovely.)

Aurora had sent Jetta with Robert to help Joan out. They had been headed downstairs; Robert had been sure that Joan had been caugh - when the girl herself stumbled upon them, looking rather frazzled, but unharmed.

"Joan!" Robert cried. "Are you all right?"

"Yes." Joan hastely smoothed her hair. "I...yes."

"You'd both better be off then." Jetta advised, her eyes flickering over Robert's "friend" a little coldly. "Come on."

The two snuck back out of the kitchens; Joan towards home to get ready and Robert to the stables.

***

Philip, dressed in dark green and warm gold that brought out his hair and eyes, knocked on his mother's door than entered. He smiled as she stood.

"You look lovely." he said warmly, kissing her on the cheek. "But rather unfair for all the young ladies to be outdone by my mother, isn't it?"

"Philip." Rose said quietly, but she was smiling; they both knew he was teasing. Philip offered her his arm and the two headed off to the ball room.

Elisabeth flushed as no one answered. She had been sure he would be in there! She quickly walked down to the ball room, (or as fast as her dress would let her anyway) looking for Phillip. A hand caught hers just as she saw him looking around, seemingly just as urgent as she. She turned around quickly and found Miki grinning.

"So you came!" he said excitedly. "Would you like to dance?"

She glanced around for Phillip. Her plan was failing! She had to get to the Prince, and fast, if she wanted to put her plan in motion before anyone else. He was gone, obviously off to see whoever he was looking for, or perhaps to dance with some of the lovely maidens she could see walzing around her already. She sighed, but not as large as she would have. She didn't want Miki to feel bad. She forced herself to smile. "Sure my Miki-Mage, let us dance."

Cassandra made her way downstairs to the ballroom. Upstairs she could hear faint strains of music, but once she reached the first floor she could hear everything. She had to say that she was looking very forward to this evening. At the foot of the stairs, four of her knights, including Rafe were waiting to escort her to the ball. They looked very good in civilian clothes. Rafe was very attractive in his forest green and black attire. The other knights were presentable as well.
(OOC: I'm not up to speed on medieval men's clothing so I'm even going to try to describe it with the detail I did the ladies dresses. I'm sure you can all just imagine them looking handsome and sexy and all that. )

Rafe came up to her and bowed low. "My lady, please allow me to escort you into the ballroom," he said, graciously offering his arm.

With a smile, she placed her hand upon his proffered elbow and they entered the grand ballroom.

Rafe bent down to whisper in Cassandra's ear when they reached the entrance to the ballroom.

"My lady you are looking exquisite tonight. You will out do the Queen tonight. Look, all the men's eyes are upon you."

It was true, for when she walked into the room, people stopped what they were doing and heads turned in their direction. Some ignorant fools might have even mistaken her for the queen for she was so opulently dressed. Her cheeks were flushed and she held her head up high as she walked through the room. It was good to know that she was so admired.

"Thank you Rafe for those splendid compliments," she replied. Her eyes were searching for a sign of Philp, but he was nowhere in sight. Abandoning her search for now, she turned to Rafe, "What news have you for me tonight?" she asked.

"Business as usual it seems," he sighed. "Alright, I have found out that many of the men would like a man at the throne, whether it be the queen remarrying or the son coming into the kingship earlier than expected. If you want Philip, you'd best keep an eye out on the Queen so she doesn't start looking for a husband on her own. Even if you got to Philip, you still wouldn't be the queen..."

Cassandra heard this with interest. She had no worries that the queen would want to marry because she apparently wanted the kingdom to go to her son, but Philip becoming king over his mother was a new idea.

"... Philip has many women dangling after him. From what I hear, from the guards, he is very close with the queen's closest advisor, Lord Rupert's daughter Aurora," Rafe continued.

"I can take care of any competition," she whipered angrily back. "And if Lady Aurora gets in my way, I'll just have to speak with the handsome Lord Rupert." It wouldn't hurt to try to get to know Lord Rupert better if he was the queen's closest advisor. He could let some important pieces of information slip out if given the right opportunity to speak them in confidence.

"Thank you for you help Rafe. I will summon you again when I need some more information, but you have been extremely helpful tonight. I will reward you properly when I have the time. Now we must separate or people will talk."

Rafe escorted her to a group of noblemen and women that she knew and disappeared into the crowds. Casssandra set out to meet as many new people tonight as possible.

****************

Stephen was so long out of fancy clothes that he was chafing a bit in his dark red velvet doublet and cream hose, the house colors of Lady Cassandra's that he adopted when he became a knight. He smiled widely when he saw that Elaine was accompanying Lady Cassandra. She looked beautiful in her dress of red and cream. She was looking around wide-eyed and didn't seem to notice he was there. Lady Cassandra left to enter the ballroom and he noticed Elaine looking a little lost. Well, he'd be her escort for the night then. Walking up the two steps to her, he touched her elbow lightly and spoke.

"My lady Elaine, I am so pleased to see that you are attending the ball tonight."

She gave a start when she saw him standing by her. A pretty blush was beginning to stain her cheeks. "Ah, yes, Lady Cassandra asked me to wait upon her tonight, but she seems to have left me and I don't really know what I should do," she said.

"I cannot advise you as to what Lady Cassandra wants, but if you want to do something, you should place your hand on my arm and allow me to escort you to the ball," he said smiling.

She looked into his eyes for the first time that night and her silvery eyes sparkled in amusement at his gallant words. "Well, sir, I can see that you will endeavor to entertain me this entire night, and plague me to no end if I refuse. So, I will gladly accept your offer," she said jokingly.

His smile grew even wider then. Offering his arm to her, they entered the ballroom together.

******************

Elaine looked around in apparent awe. She had never seen such a large gathering or one so grand. She wasn't sure what she was going to do tonight, but she decided to have as much fun as possible. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw Sir Rafe and Sir Stephen, and two other knights waiting for Lady Cassandra. Sir Rafe offered his arm to Lady Cassandra and they entered the ballroom flanked by the other knights. Lady Cassandra seemed to have forgotten all about her. She didn't know if she should follow or run back upstairs and get the other girls down here with her. She hadn't realized that Stephen was still there, until her touched her arm and spoke to her.

Elaine was surprised at her behavior tonight. On any other occasion she would be stammering and blushing and hiding her face when faced with such a handsome man - and he was looking very handsome! But tonight she was actually being witty and charming and even joking with him! There must be something in the air, she mused, that was causing her to act so unlike herself.

They entered the ballroom and she gasped in delight. The room was exquisitely decorated in blues and reds and greens and golds and silvers. Hundreds of candles lighted up the room so that is was almost bright as day. The curtains were drawn off the windows so that the gorgous night sky could be seen, with a hint of moonlight and starlight shining through. To one side, the orchestra was playing and the rest of the room was filled with beautiful dancing couples. Against the walls were refreshments and foods for the breathless and weary party-goers. Elaine could not spot anyone she knew, not that she knew very many people, but the swilrs of bright vivid colors and the beautiful music made her want to rush out onto the dance floor. But she had danced so very little as a girl and young woman, she was somewhat afraid she might embarrass herself.

"It is so beautiful. The people, the music, the room, the night, everything!" she cried, smiling up at Stephen.

"Yes, everything is lovely. And you look especially lovely tonight," he said.

There was nothing she could say, so she merely smiled at him.

"Come, let us dance," he said, pulling her onto the dance floor.

All thoughts of embarrasment flew out of her head as she held his hand and joined the dance set.

(OOC: I'm so sorry it's so long. I just seem to go on and on. I hope you all don't mind. )

((OOC: Those dresses are really nice yall! But I like this one... http://www.yosa.com/catalog/fantasy/dangerous.html I guess it's not exactly period but oh well!))
Joan had hurried to Mary's house and gotten ready for the ball, not daring to tell her friend about her encounter with the prince. Now that she had seen him, she couldn't help but think that he was handsome...But he is a prince! A noble, who cares nothing for the likes of us...On the other hand, he could have sent me to the dungeons...All the thoughts were spinning around her head as Mary fixed her hair and sent her on her way to the castle.

She found Robert near the door at the kitchens.
"Well, what do you think, can I pass for a courtier for one night? I'd 'ave to get rid of my accent and speak more properly but...Shall we go then? I think I'd like to see the ballroom, we don't have to go in, I just want to see."

Robert nodded and he brought her down into the passage, the music already playing in their ears. As they reached the door leading to the ballroom, he pushed it open to reveal the splendidly decorated room with nobles laughing and servants rushing about. It was like a dream and soon Joan's negative thoughts about nobles and bourgeois were gone. She didn't even think about her father anymore, all she wanted to do was join in.

Slipping into the room she pulled Robert in with her and could tell he was nervous, but she didn't want to stand in there alone. She was humming to the music, it was a tune she she knew when all of a sudden she saw a familiar face dancing around in the crowd. Her expression went blank and she started shaking...

********************************************************
"Lord Julius my lady, at your service." He told her, in the same honeyed voice he'd used with the Prince. Aurora was looking very pretty tonight, but she seemed distracted. Looking for his Highness no doubt, like all the other pathetic women here... He was starting to really resent Philip and his thoughts were turning particularly violent () when he spotted a girl slipping into the hall whom he almost recognized.

The two danced closer and closer to the girl but he simply could not guess who she was. It became so frustrating that he continually stepped on Aurora's feet, her face wincing in discomfort.

(OOC: Hey guys, I'm only going to be able to post once today and not at all tomorrow. Just don't leave me behind, k?)

Joan had pulled Robert in and the boy felt nervous. He had been required to wear nicer clothes for the evening since he had been helping some of the footmen help the ladies out. Still, his tunic and leggins, while a nice shade of blue that brought out his eyes, were not quite noble looking.

"I am not so sure about this." He whispered; he was just tall enough for his mouth to be at Joan's ear. "You do look like a lady; but I still..." he trailed off as Joan went pale.

"What? What is it?" he asked, then followed her gaze. Lord Julius! The man was dancing with Lady Aurora.

"Come on." he said soflty, tugging gently on Joan's hand and leading her around the room to the east side. They stayed near the painted and gilt edged walls. Suddenly Robert stopped short and ducked behind the backs of a group of noblemen who were talking.

"What is it?" Joan asked. "Now you've gone pale."

"It's Sir Rafe!" Robert hissed. "If he sees me here...oh no,oh no...I need to get out of here..."

But before he could, the doors were open and the Queen and Prince were announced. Robert stood next to Joan in her elegant gown and hoped that he was insignificant enough to escape the knight's notice; Sir Rafe wasn't looking in his direction; so far so good. For once, the boy was thankful for his small height.

(OOC: Okay, Philip can dance with whoever; don't let Robert get into *too* much trouble, k? I don't think he can stand much more stress, lol, j/k. See you guys Monday!)

(((OO fun!!! Oh yeah and more than likely, Kurama's girl will have my head *makes a beheading motion* if I don't let you guys know that she's gonna be gone also for about a week b/c she's moving and had to disconnect her computer. Everybody cry at teh loss of such a fine piece of technology!! lol )))

A bunch of trumpets blared their announcement as Prince Phillip and the queen walked into the room. She touched Miki's arm and shot him an apologetic look before quickly making her way to the Prince's side.

"Escuse me your highness, but would you give me the joy to dance with you?" Elisabeth asked sweetly.

The Prince nodded. After all, he was suppossed to dance with everyone wasn't he?

Elisabeth smiled gracefully as she was led out on to the dance floor by the Prince, and all eyes were on her. She grinned wickedly inside. This was only the first step. However seh couldn't shake the feeling that someone was staring at her, with hate in mind....

(((There's the setup for devious Lady Cassandra!!)))

Trumpets sounded as Rose and her son entered the ballroom, all stopped dancing and bowed or curtsied in respect. The music began again when Rose signalled the band and the two of them moved into the room together.

"Well Philip my dear, off you go now and have fun,' Rose whispered in Philip's ear, then the two of them broke away and went seperate directions.

Several ministers and nobles bowed and mutted, "You look delightful, Your Majesty," or "Such a picture of youth and majesty, M'am!" Rose nodded to them and smiled and made her way over to where she was to sit during the evenings festivities.

"Your Highness!" a voice exclaimed behind her. Turning, Rose smiled to see Ernest looking at her with his eyes open in wonder, "You look a picture! I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful woman!"

"Sir Cartwright, you tease...."

"Not at all Your Majesty. Will you do me the honor of your hand in a dance this evening?" Ernest asked, his face still looking at her in absolute wonder.

"Certainly....tell me where is Eliza?" Rose asked, wondering where her "delightful' sister had got to.

"She left this afternoon, I cannot say how pleased that makes me....I don't like to see Your Majesty embarressed by such a woman," Ernest answered taking her hand and leading her round the room slowly towards where people were dancing.

"Oh, really? Where to exactly?" Rose continued, and the two of them joined in on the dance.

"I fear to tell you....." Ernest began, "She has left for Norway, to another gentleman who lives there...."

"NORWAY?!" Rose exclaimed, and heads turned in her direction as she leapt back from her dancing partner in disbelief. The music went a little off beat, but the band soon went back to normal and guests remained dancing.

With struggled breaths and her face pale, the two continued their dance.

"Not the best place to go, I fear. But at least she is not here...." Ernest commented.

"Yes, but of all places!" then in a hushed voice continued, "Do you realise how bad this could get? Norway, our potential enemy? Oh what is to become of us?"

"Your Majesty must keep face, no one else must know or you will have more problems. I have let Lord Rupert and the other advisors know, but you must tell no one - I don't want to be responsible for more uncertainty etc."

"Of course..."

"Just enjoy this evening as if nothing has happened,' Ernest advised. "Let us worry about Norway later....."

(oooh galadriel_elf_queen you are sooo devious! I hope she's evil enough for you.)

The music and dancing stopped when the Queen and Prince were announced. Cassandra had placed herself near the door in order to spot and be spotted by the Philp. Even before he had a chance to look around some girl boldly went up to him and asked him to dance, instead of waiting to be asked. She was livid with anger. Philip was supposed to spot her first and ask her to dance first, which no doubt would have happened if that horribly uncouth girl hadn't come up to him first.

She was so angry she didn't hear the repated calls and requests to dance by some nobleman until almost too late. Pasting a smile on her face she turned, "I'm so sorry, my lord, the music was much too loud I did not hear you earlier. But I would be honored to dance with you."

They took off towards the dance floor. "Who is that cahrming young woman dancing with the prince?" she asked , barely keeping the irritation and sarcasm out of her voice.

But either the man was too slow or too entranced by her he didn't hear the underlying anger in her voice. "I'm afraid I don't know. I have not seen her in the castle before. I'm sure I can get you an introduction later," he said eagerly. Cassandra cringed inside wondering how she could get rid of him, otherwise he'd never leave her side.

The joined the dance set and Cassandra skillfully maneuvered themselves near, but not too near, the prince and the girl. It would not do to look like she was stalking Philip. She oveheard him calling her Elizabeth - she had a name now to go with that ugly face. She glared at Elizabeth, for she was now another clinging female she had to get rid of. Revenge would be fun, she thought, a malicious smile curling on her lips. Yes, she knew what to do.

********************

Elaine and Stephen were breathless from the very merry and very fast set they had just finished. The Queen and Prince came in and they looked very handsome together. They both had such a regal bearing it was obvious who they were. The prince and another woman went off to dance and then the rest of the dancers resumed their spots.

Elaine turned to Stephen and smiled. "I am having a wonderful time. I never imagined I would enjoy myself more thouroughly than I am now."

"I'm glad I could do something," he said with a boyish grin. "I can see this night getting even better."

Elaine blushed at thinking about spending the entire evening dancing with him - not that she would mind if that happened. But then a gentleman came up to the two of them and bowed to her. "Good evening Sir Stephen," he said.

"Good evening Sir Hugh," he replied, not looking too happy about it. He cleared his throat, "Allow me to introduce you. Lady Elaine, this is Sir Hugh, one of the Queen's knights. Sir Hugh, this is the Lady Elaine. She is an attendant to the Lady Cassandra."

"I'm very pleased to meet you my lady," Sir Hugh said, taking her hand and brushing a very light kiss upon her knuckles.

"Likewise," she whispered, giving a little curtsey. She was already off balance from his kissing her hand, when he asked her for a dance. She shot a look at Stephen from under her lashes, but he was looking away in the opposite direction. "I'd be delighted," she replied, with more energy than needed. Stephen was obviously not interested in her because he was not even looking at her. And why should she spend the rest of the evening hoping he would ask her to dance, when there were so many men with who to dance with? So with a nod and a "Sir Stephen," Sir Hugh led her off to the dance floor.

***************

Stephen was just about to ask Elaine for another dance, when Sir Hugh came by. He couldn't very well ingnore him or not introduce them, so he did. He could see Sir Hugh looking at Elaine with very appreciative eyes. He wasn't liking this very much.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw someone he knew. He saw a couple of blond heads, but then he didn't see tham anymore. He didn't want to think that Joan had snuck in here, but she was stubborn enough to do so. He then dismissed that thought too because since she'd refused his help and had run away from him, he was not responsible for his actions anymore and so he wouldn't think about it anymore. He would enjoy his evening.

Or not, because Elaine dismissed him with a curt nod and walked off with Sir Hugh. Stephen stared after them wondering what he did wrong.

*****************

Rafe had charmed a young lady named Susan into dancing with him. She was the daughter of some nobleman or another, but he didn't care. She was pretty and a very good dancer. And she talked a lot. After a few minutes of listening to her talk about the weather and the ball, he was getting deadly bored, when she started on the subject of the queen.

"... father says that this country is worse with a queen instead of a king. But I don't think so. Just look at the new fashions that the Queen has introduced in the past year. And the Prince is so handsome," she babbled on brightly.

"Yes, but why does your father think the country is worse with the Queen?" he asked, trying to get back on the subject of interest.

"Oh he says it's because all other countries want to go to war. And that some other nobles are not willing to support the queen if there is war. I overheard that while my father was in his study talking with his friends. He never notices when I am around."

"And are you excited at the idea of war?"

"No! It's must be horrible. It's so messy and what if it rains on you? Your clothes would get so very muddy and dirty. But, Father, says that war is good for the country. And then the Prince would have to leave to negotiate. But I think that would be a pity. The Prince should stay here and have more wonderful balls like this. This ball is absolutely wonderful. The decorations are so beautiful and my friend Alice says...."

And on she went for the rest of the dance. But fortunately, she chattered on so much he had time to think over what she'd said. There were nobles that were not it support of the queen and would support whoever wanted to be king. And if there was a war, any knight coming into the lead would be much admired. The prince would also be gone, so he would have no influence over the decisions the queen made. This was a very interesting situation.

The dance finally ended and Rafe left Susan with her mother wrangling for maybe another dance for the two of them. He smiled poilitely and said he was already engaged for this next set.

He walked off and saw Robert hiding in some corner, behind some young woman, and their eyes met for a second or two. But he was so lost in his thoughts that his mind did not register the fact that Robert was here but really should not be in here at all. Rafe just walked on by and soon forgot all about seeing Robert or anyone else he passed. He was eyeing the queen and deciding how to best approach her for dance.

Philip had been a little surprised by the boldness of Elizabeth by asking him to dance, but he brushed it off.

Several times he spoke to her, but she seemed disintrested and he even caught her looking at the other people in the crowd. 'Well, all right, that's one choice I don't have to make.' Philip thought in relief.

The dance ended and Philip bowed, while smiling. "Thank you for the dance, Lady Elizabeth. However, I am afraid I must excuse myself."

Elizabeth said the polite statement back and Philip scanned the crowd again. Two dances later, he spotted a crown of golden hair and made for it.

"Lady Aurora." he said as the girl turned. "I do not believe I have had the honor of dancing with you yet tonight."

He held out a hand.

(OOC: Well...I was going to make it Cassandra, then I decided that Philip and Aurora needed another run in. ^_^ I kinda like Cassandra tho...not sure why. O.o)

***

Sir Rafe had passed and he and Robert had met eyes, but the knight had passed on without seeming to realize that it was the stableboy.

Robert let out a breath he hadn't been aware of holding.

"Robert, are you all right?" Joan asekd. "You're not going to faint on me are ya?"

Robert straightened and looked at her indignantly. "No!"

Joan grinned and gave a little laugh. "Good."

The two young people looked at the swirling crowd silently for a moment.

"This isn't much fun, is it?" Robert asked.

"No." Joan admitted. Robert nodded, then his eyes lit up.

"Come on!" he said tugging on her hand.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"You'll see." Robert answered, pulling her through what seemed to be another maze of hallways and stairs, stopping before a door. He opened it and they walked outside.

"This is one of the gardens." Robert explained. "And it's right outside the ball room."

Through the slender windows carved into the castles' rock walls, the music floated on the air. The moon was very full and bright.

"It's pretty." Joan murmered. Robert nodded in agreement, then grinned and turned to her, bowing in a grand fashion.

"May I have this dance, my lady?" he asked in an over done tone. Joan laughed.

"Yes, you may Sir Robert." she said in the same type of voice, making a curtsy.

Laughing, the two of them began to dance, trying to imitate the dances they had seen, but ending up doing their own dance.

Unbeknowist to them, a figure was watching in the trees, smiling in a benevolent fashion. Luke was glad that the two were having fun, but...he grinned, boy was he going to let the two of them have it tomorrow!

(OOC: ^__^ I thought it would be kind of cute for Luke to tease them later. But they don't know he's there, kay M?)

Elisabeth watched the Prince stroll off toward Elisabeth. She frowned. She could've slapped herself. It had been completely obvious, (as much as she'd tried to hide it from him) that she really didn't want to be there. She glanced aorund, hoping she could find Miki again. He was such a sweet guy.

Suddenly she spottted a woman looking evilly at her out of the corner of her eye. Elisabeth shivered. Unless she was mistaken, that was the new woman Mika had called Cassandra and she quoted in her mind, "A more evil and seducting mistress couldn't be found. But no one knows of what she wishes on a dark night except me. I read her mind!"

Elisabeth roamed around looking for someone to dance with until she could either try again with the Prince, find Miki, or perhaps something else. She started to walk toward the refreshments, when she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She turned around and it was a bright young man. And unless she was mistaken, the same who had been dancing with Lady Cassandra moments ago. "May I have this dance?" he asked bowing graciously.

She stared at him a moment and then smiled. 'What could it hurt?' she thought. "I would love to good sir." she said politely, taking his arm.

While they were dancing, he started out with polite questions. "So, what is your name, milady?"

"Lady Elisabeth thank you. And yours?"

"Sir Eric Lathoniel. When did oyu come to the palace?"

"Just yesterday. I was here to court the Prince." suddenly she realized why she had been suspicious in the first place. This Eric could have been sent by Cassandra! She wouldn't put it past the woman. Either way, she needed the woman off her back. "He's quite a fabulous, handsome charming man..." she droned on until the dance was done and Eric seemed quite put off.

She smiled. 'As long as she thinks I'm smitten with the Prince she won't think of me as anything else...' she thought happily, not realizing the effect this would have on Lady Cassandra....

(OOC: Jaid this is wondeful! Philip and Aurora definitely need time together and it'll make Cassandra even more furious. And galadriel you are so sneaky... I'm totally going to have to make use of Sir Eric's new found information )

Cassandra had finally shaken off her partner, Sir Eric - was that his name? And when she turned the Philip was heading her way. It was about time. She smiled brightly and was about to hold out her hand to him when he turned and asked someone else to dance! It was that girl he was walking with the afternoon before. So she was the advisor's daughter, Aurora. In her opinion, she wasn't much to look at. Philip must have a soft spot for her if he was so inclined to talk and dance with her.

A group of noblemen saw her standing there smiling and they obviously thought she was bestowing her attentions on them, so they gathered around her all asking for a dance. She was feeling flattered and was feeling a little better for being so admired, so she accepted the most handsome of the men. She did leave some hope for the other men that she might dance with them later if they asked her at the right time.

Cassandra played the pretty, but shy maiden, allowing her time to think while just giving meaningless responses to the questions Lord Peter asked her. It was such a hassle, but now she had two females to get rid of. And no doubt there would be more later on this evening. She could intimidate a few of them, but that Elizabeth and Aurora, she wanted to deal with them directly. Elizabeth for claiming the first dance, and Aurora, since the prince already had some kind of relationship with her. It would be so easy to 'accidentally' let slip a few interesting tidbits about the two women. Just harmless observations.

"My lord, do you happen to know the young lady dancing with the prince?" she asked prettily. "She looks familiar."

"You might have seen her. She is Lord Rupert's daughter, Lady Aurora. Lord Rupert is the Queen's advisor," he answered.

"Oh yes. I saw her yesterday in the gardens. She seems like a nice young woman. Although I heard from my maids that Lady Aurora was consorting with some low village boys. I shouldn't like to gossip like this, but I am so concerned over her welfare and reputation. I wouldn't like for my maids to be among such company if it is true - but it probably is untrue," she said, a skillful mixture of lies and truth.

"I understand your concern Lady Cassandra. But I'm sure you have nothing to fear from Lady Aurora," he said. "But she is a little wild at times. Her father is quite lenient with her," he added, sounding a little doubtful.

"I'm sure it is nothing. Please let us speak of more pleasant topics and enjoy the rest of our dance," she said. She could see little seeds of misgiving gathering around Lord Peter. If she could just drop a few more words around the room to some ladies, who love to gossip, it would be enough for now to tarnish a little of Aurora's spotless reputation and cast doubt on her character.

The dance ended happily on both ends, and they parted friends. Lady Cassandra started to look around again for the Prince, but before she even had a chance to survey the room, Sir Eric popped up by her side. "My lady, I would love to have introduced you to the Lady Elisabeth - she is nice, but I'm afraid she is a bit dull. She could speak of nothing but the Prince," he said.

Cassandra was trying to think of a way to get rid of him when her ear caught "the Prince." "The Prince?" she asked.

"Yes, she barely spoke a sentence without uttering her admiration for the Prince."

"She must be smitten with him then," Cassandra said, beginning to feel annoyed. Elisabeth would definitely need to be wrenched away from the Prince with some effort.

"My lady, why are we here standing, when we could be dancing? May I have another dance?" Sir Eric asked.

Cassandra was torn, because she was hoping this would be the dance to dance with Philip. But then again she wanted to find out what exactly Sir Eric had gotten out of Elisabeth and what her intentions really were. And finally, Sir Eric might get ideas if she danced with him again and so soon. But curiosity won out and (she rationalized to herself) Philip might even be jealous that she had so many dance partners before he could claim her.

"I'd love to dance with you," Cassandra said, laying her hand in his. For the remainder of the dance Cassandra subtly plied him with questions about Elisabeth. She soon found out that Elisabeth's only goal in coming here was to marry the Prince. And that she seemed to be madly in love with him. Well, a few rumors about her wouldn't be a problem, but she needed something stronger. She'd keep a close eye on her because a humiliation was in store. And Sir Eric might be the perfect candidate for it. If Sir Eric wondered why she was so interested in Elisabeth he made no mention of it, nor did he even seem to notice her questions.

(OOC: I haven't decided if Sir Eric is really just naive and willing to do whatever to please Cassandra, or if he's caught on and is being sneaky. I suppose it's up to whoever wants to use him next.)

((sooo sorry I have not been here. Computer crashed and the whole family's internet was down. Oh and minor detail  Aurora's hair is deep auborn. wanted to stay as much away from the Sleeping Beauty look as possibly ooh and I love the scandel that seems to be brewing. )

Aurora curtsied and smiled at Phillip. She took his hand and walked into the middle of the floor with him.

The band began to play another tune and Phillip and Aurora danced around and around to it. She was glad to be with him again. Being around Phillip always made her happy and forget what troubles were going on with her father. As she and Phillip danced around she couldn't help but knowtist Phillip looking at her. She looked at him curiously.

"What is it my Lord?"
******
Rupert bowed to the Queen as she and Earnest passed on the way to the dance floor. A strange feeling came over him that made him worry for her. Something about Earnest was not right.

A few of the other advisors came over to him and they stood there talking.
"I don't like that Earnest fellow." Rupert said. "He is drawing the attention of our Queen and he is married."
"I heard that Lady Eliza has left. Probably returned to England, unhappy with the way things were here."

Rupert looked back at the Queen and Earnest and shook his head.
"Still I am worried."

Then he saw Aurora and was about to go over to her and ask her for a dance when he knowtist she was dancing with Phillip. Better let them be. Who knows when they will ever see each other again. he thought sadly.

(Sorry this is so short. At the library and I have a time constraint.)

((Evil is the Lady Cassandra? Well let us see what the little noble Elisabeth has to say about that..... oh yeah and an idea. If Cassandra's looking for some dirt on Elisabeth, how about the fact that she would rather date (court) a mage ,(Miki) than the Prince but not only does it to spite her father and to get Cassandra off her trail? (that last part can be taken off....)))

Eric wandered around the ballroom, glancing here and there for Elisabeth. The beautiful Lady Cassandra had asked him once again to spy on her. He glanced around and finally caught her eyes, she was flirting shamelessly with a noble from somewhere. Here was his chance to please Lady Cassandra! He quickly walked over to her and took her hand...

*****

Elisabeth flirted carefully with teh noble, pulling for informtaion about Lady Cassandra. The wman had tohave something up her sleev if she had had Eric looking for information. All of a sudden someone grabbed her hand.

She turned and saw it was Sir Eric. "Oh hello agian!" she said pleasntly.

"Would you let me have the pleasure of another dance Lady Elisabeth?" Eric asked softly, and as flirtivly as he could. (not very well really) "And I also have someone for you to meet. I believe you might have something in common."

Elisabeth nodded. "Yes I would lovve to meet her, but I'm afriad a dance might have to wait." She smiled inwardly. She couldn't wait to meet Lady Cassandra, for it was obvious she and Elisabeth were the only ones he had danced with from the beginning.

"Then come with me." Eric replied, pulling her over to where Lady Cassandra was dancing with yet another noble. 'Had she no pride?' Elisabeth thought. 'If she was truly interested in the Prince she wouldn't be showing off as much...

(OK I'll initiate that plot line with Rupert and Cassandra. I don't know what you had in mind lyrav so I'll let you lead for the most part.)

Rupert knowtist the Lady Cassandra dancing with Sir Eric. He had been introduced to her breifly once but the two had never spoken beyond that. Perhaps they should, after all she could become the next queen. When it looked as though the dance was finishing Rupert made his way over to the couple, weaving through the mass of people.

"My Lady Cassandra." He said bowing to her. Then he turned and recognized Sir Eric but Eric seemed to be already thinking of other things.
"My Lady, we have not gotten a chance to talk, and I couldn't help but knowtist that this morning you seemed to be trying to get my attention." He held out his hand. "If you would care to dance?"

"Yes my lord." she said taking his hand.

(I can see the fire in Cassandra's eyes as she thinks up a new skeem to work with this. It's all yours lyrav, I'll pretty much follow you.)

(OOC: Sorry I've been so slow... school. Lot's of school. But anyway... so much is going on with crazy Cassandra. I hope I keep up! Thanks Bronwynn - I'll try to make it interesting. One question, is Sir Eric working with Cassandra then?)

Cassandra had learned much about Elisabeth when her dance was over with Sir Eric. He ran off immediately, presumably to go find Elisabeth. But before she could think about Lord Rupert asked her to dance. Her eyes sparkled with delight as she accepted. He was the closest to the queen and knew practically all the inner workings of the court. He would be very very useful.

"My lord, I am delighted to have this dance with you. But you must be a busy man, and I'm sure there are many important ladies that you should dance with," she said, lowering her eyes.

"No, my lady, I am pleased to have you as my partner. I've been wanting to speak with you, but haven't had the chance as you are constantly surrounded by young gentlemen."

She laughed gaily, flirting with him a little. "You do know how to speak sweet words. Well, I saw your beautiful daughter dancing with the Prince earlier. You must be so proud of her. Should I be offering my congratulations to your daughter and the Prince?" she asked slyly, hoping for a denial.

(Take it from there Bronwynn! )

**********************

Elaine had to admit that she was having a wonderful time. The men were so kind and gentlemanly, and the dances were so much fun. She loved looking at all the ladies clothes and watching them interact. She was feeling flushed and overheated so she decided to take a break from dancing. She grabbed a cup of punch and wandered through the open doors that led out into more castle grounds. Spotting a nearby bench, she gratefully sank down into the seat and was enjoying the quietness of the evening.

(Feel free to take up Elaine and include her in your story if you want. I'm being lazy today, so I won't write anything for Rafe or Stephen, but like Elaine, you can use them if you want.)

Lord Rupert Looked back at his daughter for a moment. He didn't want to tell Cassandra what was being planned for Aurora. He didn't want the word getting out just yet.
"I don't yet, my lady. There are many ladies here and anyone of them the Prince may choose for his bride."

"Oh but surely you hope that she will be the one chosen."

"I can not say my lady. I have been in the service of the court for almost twenty years now and all that I want is what is best for Denmark. I would be happy for Aurora if she were chosen or if she wasn't."

Though in his heart Rupert knew that even if Aurora was chosen she would be sent to England in the hopes of marrying into the royal family.

(((ok, I talked to Kurama's girl, whose comp is still not up and this is basically her post.)))

Miki looked around anxiously fo rElisabeth. He had a surprise for her and wanted to see her expression. He saw her almost immidaiately being pullled along by some noble toward teh areas where Cassandra was dancing with Rupert. He clenched his teeth. No way was that scoundrel going to get a dance with her.

"Elisadro." he whispered and disappeared finding himself directly infront of Elisabeth. "May I have teh grace of another dance milady?" he asked politely, light glimmering in his eyes.

******

"Where are you taking me?" Elsiabeth said cautiously as Sr Eric pulled her through the crowd of dancers. The noble didn't answer but stopped suddenly as Miki appeared infront of her.

"May I have teh grace of another dance milady?" he asked politely, light glimmering in his eyes.

Elisabeth smiled. "I would love to." seh said happily.

Miki grinned. "That is very well then." He took her arm and led her to the center of the floor. "Are you afriad of magic?" he whispered in her ear while they slowdanced.

She shook her head. "Of course not." she whispered back hurriedly.

"That's good." he said back and he made a gesture with his hands, and Elisabeth felt herself floating just above the ground while they danced.

Elisabeth fairly glowed with surprise and excitement. "Oh Miki..this is wonderful!" she whispered, laying her head on his shoulder.

However he leaved back and almost made her fall. "Not yet." he said simply, his grin growing wider with the second. He nodded a small discreet nod toward his sister hidden in the crowd. She nodded back.

Mika raised her hands into the air, and so did Miki, ignoring Elisabeth's arm around his waist. "Alforellen!" the twins said in unison, and the carvings on the ceiling of the ballroom disappeared, being replaced by a night sky, clear and beautiful, with every star twinkling.

Elisabeth stared up at the stars. "Bless me that can't be real?" she whispered, every thought in her mind gone, including those of her plans for the Prince, Cassandra and Sir Eric.

"But it is, Lady Lizzy." Miki said back. "It is."

((OOC: So sorry I haven't posted in a while, my computer totally crashed and I'm actually at the library right now...Good idea Jaid! Now Joan needs to find some dirt on Luke! ))

As Robert twirled Joan round and round she couldn't think of anywhere else she wanted to be...except...

"My father! Oh Robert, come on! I have to get down there and see him!" she cried, stopping abruptly. Though she was out of breath she began to run back inside, trailing Robert with her.
They ran through the crowds of dancing nobles, keeping their heads down and muttering excuses as they went. But when Joan stepped on Lord Lucius' foot by accident, she knew trouble was brewing.

"Forgive me my lord, I did not see you there."

"There is nothing to forgive, as long as you have a dance with me," replied Lucius, in a snarl and gave her a malicious grin. He took her hand and she knew she couldn't say no.

"Robert, go back into the garden, I'll meet you there..." she whispered to him.

Lorducius held Joan close as they danced around the room and his breath was making her sick. It didn't help that he kept whispering in her ear.
"Who are you girl? I haven't seen you around court."

When she wouldn't reply he would simply continue asking her more questions, coming to his own conclusions.
"But I have seen you before, have I not? Yes...yes, let me think. You were that pathetic girl from earlier today. The one who ran to the Prince and pleaded her case..."

She gave a little cry as he unraveled her plan and began snickering at her.
"So, the poor little farm wench wanted to come to the ball and woo Prince Philip for herself. How cute. But unfortunetly you do not know your place."

They stopped dancing but Joan did not struggle this time. The game was up, she was going to finish her days alongside he father, just as everyone had always warned her. But then she saw a glimmer of hope. On the other side of the room she spotted Stephen alone because someone had just come to claim his dance partner. It gave her an idea.

"You know, Lord Lucius, if I am to be sent to the dungeons, would you please do me the honour of one more dance?" She gave him a little wink and a sly smile as she put her arm back on his shoulder and slipped her hand into his. She led him towards Stephen as they danced and purposely caused Lucius to trip her right in front of Stephen.

"Oh, terribly sorry there my lord. I must have two left feet when I dance," she said and then looked up at Stephen, "Kind sir, would you please help me up?"

Stephen helped her up and she bore her eyes into his, making sure that he recognized her.

"Such a strong grip you have. Perhaps you would care to show me how to dance properly."

The plan was set, if she could get Stephen to dance with her, they could sneak back out to get Robert and go down to the dungeons. But if only they could shake off Lord Lucius...

Stephen just finished his dance with a very charming young lady. Another gentleman asked her to dance, saving him from having to escort her back to her mother, quite an obnoxious woman. He was enjoying himself, and all the pretty girls were keeping his mind off Elaine. He looked around the room, but didn't see her. He saw Lady Cassandra looking very gorgeous, dancing with some nobleman. Rafe was standing by a group of knights talking, but he kept glancing back at the Queen. Stephen thought it was somewhat odd that Rafe's attention was so focused on the Queen, but he didn't have time to think about it because some clumsy man practically dropped his dance partner at Stephen's feet.

"Excuse me, my lady. Are you hurt?" he asked as he helped her up. Looking into her eyes, he saw with a start that it was Joan. He could see the pleading in her eyes, so he kept his mouth shut.

"Such a strong grip you have. Perhaps you would care to show me how to dance properly," Joan said.

He looked over at her dance partner - it was Lord Lucius. In the two days that Stephen had been here, he'd already heard stories about the man. He knew instinctively that he did not like the man. And well, he had to help Joan.

So with a slight bow and a smile for Joan, he turned to Lord Lucius, who still had one hand clamped tightly on Joan's upper arm, and said, "If you would please, my lord, allow me to dance with this charming young lady?"

Lucius could do nothing but glare at Joan and snarl some sort of reply. He quickly let go of her arm and stalked off. Stephen then took up Joan in his arms and they resumed dancing in case Lucius was looking back.

"What do you think you're doing?" Stephen whispered furiously. "I suppose I probably expected you to go through with your foolish plan of sneaking into the dungeons, but I assumed you had more sense than to actually wander around at the ball! You're lucky you haven't been caught yet - or have you?" He waited somewhat patiently while Joan formed her answer.

When they had finished their dance, Ernest led Rose to her chair (I'm guessing it would actually be a throne?) which was set a little higher up from the floor by five steps, giving her a perfect view of the room from above. Another chair was next to her - Philip's.

"You are a wonderful dancer Your Highness," Ernest commented kissing her hand, "I shall dance with none other as good as you this evening M'am".

"Lord Cartwright, you flatter....there are plenty more ladies in the room with far more dancing ability than myself, surely you can see?" Rose replied smiling, she loved recieving compliments from handsome men - who wouldn't?

"Not so in my eyes," Ernest replied and winked at the Queen. Bowing, her turned and headed back into the room searching for another young lady in which to dance with.

Rose sat happily upon her chair. She was enjoying Ernest's attentions, his compliments. Life wasn't so depressing anymore since her husband passed on. Indeed the Late King had loved her dearly, she never returned quite the same affection back in her heart. But Lord Cartwright...well, she felt that he liked her and she couldn't help but admit she like him too. But he was a married man, she could never marry him. Once divorced this was still impossible. A sovereign could never marry a divorcee.

As she sat thinking about this, she felt someone's eyes on her. Of course eyes were certain to be on her, after all she was the Queen, but she felt a little uneasy. She spied a young man with a group of knights occassionally look in her direction. He was attractive in her eyes, she could help blush smile and blush. He returned her smile, and turned back to his conversation with the knights, occassionally looking in her direction from time to time.

Ernest joined the group and went into deep conversation with the man she'd only just been smiling at. She was a little confused by this. The two of them looked back at her and smiled, Ernest winking. Rose raised a hand to wave and continued to watch them converse....and began to wonder how they knew each other....

Phillip did not answer her question, but continued to just look at her.
"My lord are you alright?"

"I am fine. I was just admiring how beautiful you look tonight."

Aurora dropped her gaze and felt the blood rush to her cheeks. But Phillip raised her head up. She felt herself tremble as he looked into her eyes. She heard the music finish and they stoped dancing, but Phillip still gazed at her. Then slowly he stepped back, took her hand and kissed it.

"Might I be in your company later this evening?" he asked.

Aurora could not find the words to answer but did manage a nod. With that Phillip walked away into the crowd looking for someone else to dance with. Aurora stood where he left her for a moment almost in a daze. She was very confused but there was one thing that she did know. She loved him.

*****
When the music ended Rupert bowed to Lady Cassandra and left the dance floor. He went up to the Queen's throne and bowed to her.

"Your majesty, you are lovely this evening."

Rose made a motion with her arm inviting Rupert to stand by her throne.

"How are you this evening Lord Rupert?" she asked trying to remain composed.

"Good your Majesty. To see the court lively again after the passing of our good King and your dear husband makes me happy. I would not want the court and contry to live under a shadow of mourning forever. And how are you this evening?"

"Wonderful, for the same reasons as you and more."

"Oh?"

"There is someone here who makes me very happy."

"I see."

"Oh Rupert, stop that. (that's cheezy:dizzy: ) I know you are hiding some feeling towards this. I know that you disapprove of how much Earnest flatters me." Rose said teasingly.

"But if it makes your Majesty happy, then I will keep silent."

Rose laughed quietly beside him as they continued to watch the dance.

(You kinda have to imagine Rupert as Gandalf in personality here to put the tone to it.)
*****
Aurora had now moved off to the side of the floor. She watched the swirling of colors again as the people went round and round. Her gaze shifted between it and a nobleman who continued to look at her. She wondered who he was. He kept looking at her, but didn't try to get her attention. Then Aurora knowtist him comeing towards her.

(I suspected that the nobleman would be Sir/Lord Eric. Maybe you can find a way to bring in some plot twists there?)

Rafe was standing near the wall with a group of the knights of the castle. They were discussing Prince Philip's marriage prospects and some were even wagering on who he would choose.

"I'll be choosing the Lady Aurora. They've had eyes for each other forever."

"No. I think the Lady Cassandra will be the one. Who wouldn't choose her? She's a beautiful woman to look at."

"How about that woman he danced with first? That Lady Elisabeth?"

Rafe nothing much to say on the subject, although, many were in favor of Lady Aurora. But he was hoping there would be no opportunity for the prince to marry.

"Maybe the Prince won't choose anyone tonight. I heard that there were problems from the north and that he may be needed there," he casually interjected.

"Yes, that is true. It wouldn't be right leaving his affianced bride all alone while he was gone," one knight said.

"I have had orders to strenghten our arms and men as if we are preparing for a march," another knight said.

Rafe was keeping an eye on the Queen, and saw that she had finished her dance. The Queen glanced in his direction and offered him a smile. He smiled back. Now would be the time to ask her to dance, but he saw that the man who was dancing with her was heading his way. He was curious, so he stayed where he was.

The man approached him. "Sir Rafe, is it not? I have heard many things about you as news travels far and fast. You are quite the scoundrel, if I am not mistaken, but yet you are a valiant knight. The Lady Cassandra must be please to have a knight such as you leading her guard."

"I'm afraid you have the honor of knowing my name, yet I do not have that same honor. Who might you be?" Rafe asked suspiciously, looking the man up and down.

"I am the Lord Ernest Cartwright. I just arrived at the palace yesterday afternoon."

"Ah, the Queen's brother-in-law," he said knowingly. "And where is your beautiful wife this evening?" he asked, provoking him. He caught Ernest looking back at the Queen and giving her a small wave and a wink.

"I'm afraid she is indisposed. But I thank you for your concern. I have happened to notice you watching the Queen. I would say with your reputation that your thoughts are not exactly good ones, but I could be wrong."

"A man can admire a beautiful woman, can he not? And if that beautiful woman is the Queen, I should wonder why the whole court is not looking at her in the same way. I was hoping to have a dance with her," he stated.

(Do you want to take over from here Cate? I'm not sure how to get them plotting together, when at the moment they still seem suspicious of each other.)

********************************

Cassandra was pleased to note that Lord Rupert did not think Philip and Aurora would be getting married, but she suspected that he was keeping something from him. Well, she would just have to be more persistent and flirt a little more to get him to open up to her. The set ended and she curtseted to Lord Rupert, thanking him profusely for the dance. He left her looking quite happy.

She looked around and saw with a smirk that Sir Eric was heading towards Lady Aurora. He was good for something after all. She smiled with pleasure at the information he might have for her. Now all she needed to complete the evening would be her dance with Philip - maybe even two dances.

**************************

Sir Eric gave a start of surprise as the mage popped up right in front of him. He had come out of nowhere. Sir Eric didn't trust the mages of the castle. And now this one was asking the Lady Elisabeth to dance. He was sure Lady Cassandra would find this interesting. He just had to find out more intersting tidbits to tell the Lady Cassandra and keep her attention. Eventually, she would come to realize how reliable he was and see that he was already in love with her.

He then spotted the prince making his farewell to his dance partner, the Lady Aurora. He remembered that Lady Cassandra was interested in her, so he immediately went towards Lady Aurora. Upon reaching her side, he bowed to her. "My lady, may I have this dance?"

Sir Eric had been a knight at the castle for less than a year, so he didn't know much about Aurora, but he would do his best to find out more tonight.

((( little bitsy plot twisties flying all about! oo you know what is a good quote? Its from Robert Jordan's Fires of Heaven. "The Creator made women to please teh eyes and trouble the mind." <-- its right! Beware boys! *laughes evilly*)))

Elisabeth sighed happily as she felt her feet touch the floor again after the dance with Miki. "Thank you my mage, but I'm afraid I have otehr matters to deal with."

Miki looked at her strangely but nodded. "As you will Lady Lizzy."

Elisabeth turned around and saw Sir Eric dancing with Aurora. She was sure he was up to no good, but as long as he was away from Lady Cassandra, this might be a good time to 'show off some of her love for the Prince' if Sir Eric hadn't done enough.

"Escuse me milady, I assume you are the,"she paused, looking for the right word to get her point across, "flirtacious Lady Cassandra?"

(OOC: Lyrav9, I think we talked wa-ay back about Rafe and Ernest being in on the plot to take over Denmark, or something along those lines, together? I hope I was right in presuming this? Anyway, I think it will be great if they were. We'll see how it goes! Btw, please let me know if I have got the character of Rafe wrong, and if you don't like their conversation! )

Ernest was suspicious of the man whose eyes had often wandered towards the Queen as she sat perched on her throne enjoying the evening's festivites. Making his way over to him, he struck up a conversation, rather strained at that.

"A man can admire a beautiful woman, can he not? And if that beautiful woman is the Queen, I should wonder why the whole court is not looking at her in the same way. I was hoping to have a dance with her," Rafe stated.

Ernest raised an eyebrow, throughly amused by what Rafe had to say. "I'd like to see you try. Queens have to be very choosy with who they dance with. Family, like myself, is perfectly acceptable, but someone such as yourself? Doubtful".

Rafe laughed, "You? Family? Hardly! You only married her alful sister, a woman to whom I compare with a whale or orca! One can hardly admire your taste in woman, and I'm sure Her Majesty already wonders why you married such a sea beast!"

"I beg your pardon, Sir. Do you really think I enjoyed such a marriage? I indeed share your opinion about Madam Eliza - she is a revolting pig! How do you think I could stand her over such a short period of time?" Ernest paused and snarled, "I do not have to share my personal life with someone such as you!"

"Indeed you do not. But let me ask you one question," Rafe answered, his mind racing at what he was hearing. "Did you marry Lady Cartwright in order to gain your job, your job, your position next to the Queen?"

"Whatever are you implying?"

They both fell silent, their eyes falling upon Rose again. "Tell me Lord Cartwright," Rafe began, speaking slowly, "Does Norway ring any bells for you?"

"Norway? Whatever are you .... you do realise that all this is hush hush, the possible threat of war do you not?" Ernest replied in whispers.

"No, not that," Rafe answered. "You know what I mean,"

Ernest's expression changed to an even more suspicious glare.

"It seems you have been seen in Norway, meeting with the one who is planning to take over this country..." Rafe suggested.

"You know this how?" Ernest replied, trying hard not to smile, and was by now intreged.

"Oh, I know. I know what you are planning, I think I can help you...."

(OOC: I hope this is ok, I think it suggests the plot outline mentioned about Ernest and Rafe being in on the plot together...)

(OOC: Wow, a lot happened while I was gone...lol M! Dirt on Luke? Well, I'll try an think of something. ^__~)

Robert stayed near the edges of the crowd, following as Stephen and Joan danced.

'She really looks like she belongs.' Robert though absently. 'I doubt even Luke could tease her right now.'

***

Philip had left Aurora to another nobleman was looking for Cassandra. He spotted her, but it seemed that Lady Elizabeth was speaking to her. The prince sighed, but knew that the dancing would go on for a long time tonight and there would be plenty of time for him to ask her.

But as for right now...Smiling, he approached his mother and bowed.

"I think it is my turn to dance with one of the most lovely ladies in the room." he said lightly. Rose smiled and put her hand in her son's.

Aurora blushed slightly at Sir Eric's question.

"Yes my Lord, you may."

(sorry don't know what you want to do with this  )

Rupert bowed to Phillip as he came to ask his mother to dance.

"Yes your Majesty. Go on and enjoy yourself."

Joan was very grateful with Stephen when he decided to dance with her.
"Aye alright girl, but you'd best watch your step." Growled Lucius at Joan before walking away. He approached the Queen and her son who were dancing together and asked if he could cut in.
***************************************************************
"I'm glad you have so much faith in me Stephen. Oops, I mean Sir Stephen. I have not gotten in trouble yet, but that was a close call with Lord Lucius over there. Don't look so mad, just help me find Robert and you can go back to romancing whatever ladies you want. Agreed?"

(Wow sooo much is going on! And I'm so slow in posting... forgive me!)

Cassandra was stading hoping to catch the Prince's eye, when out of nowhere that girl Elisabeth walked up to her and addressed her most rudely.

"Escuse me milady, I assume you are the,"she paused, looking for the right word to get her point across, "flirtacious Lady Cassandra?"

Cassandra looked down her nose at the girl and said, "Pardon, were you speaking to me?"

"Yes I was," Elisabeth said, belligerently.

Cassandra gave a light laugh. "I'm afraid you must be mistaken for I don't know how you got the idea that I was... how did you put it? flirtatious. And that is a very rude thing to say to a lady, especially when I haven't even been introduced to you."

"I think you know who I am. I am Lady Elisabeth."

"Oh are you? Well where are your chaperones? It is not very proper for a young lady like yourself wandering around the ballroom all alone. Now if you'll excuse me I must say hello to Lord and Lady Cuthbert over there," Cassandra said, trying her best not to snap at Elisabeth. She just noticed that Philip was dancing with his mother. At the rate things were progressing this evening, she would never get a chance with Philip.

"If you'll excuse me, Lady Cassandra, I would like a word or two with you," Elisabeth stated with a steely, almost militant look in her eye.

Cassandra paused, her curiosity was peaked. "Oh?" was all she said, raising an eyeborw and giving Elisabeth an arrogant stare.

(I hope this is ok galadriel. I can change what Elisabeth says, if you want.)

******************

(Hey Cate, I think it's great what you've done with Ernest and Rafe.)

"I know you've plans to rule Denmark for yourself. Don't you think I've noticed how you've been trying to romance the Queen? The only problem seems to me is that you're stuck with a horrible wife," Rafe said.

"I admit that my wife has gotten in the way of my ambitions, but what has that to do with the Queen?" Ernest asked, still somewhat suspiciously.

Rafe could see that Ernest was weakening a bit because he was so curious as to what Rafe knew. "I know and everyone else knows that the Queen cannot marry a divorced man. That would be completely out of the question. But a widower is a whole other subject."

"Are you saying that you think I want to hurt my wife?"

"No, I'm just saying it's much more convinient. But that's not why I wanted to speak with you. I know who you've been meeting with in Norway. And the only way you would be successful is if you had a large army. I can supply you with that. Another interesting thing to note is that the Prince might be leaving the country on diplomatic duties. I suspect that might make things much much easier for you also?"

**********************

Stephen rolled his eyes at Joan. "Well, you'd better keep your head out of trouble. I am definitely not looking forward to joining you in the dungeons as a prisoner."

Joan just looked at him with an annoyed expression.

"Fine, no more lectures from me. Now, where did you last see Robert?"

"Well we were dancing in the gardens, when I came in here to get to the dungeons, when that horrid Lord Lucius accosted me. I told Robert I'd meet back with him outside."

"Dancing? Well you'd make a very proper young lady if you asked me. You do look very charming tonight," Stephen said. He could see that he was embarrassing her so he began pulling her towards the open doors. "Come on. Let's hope we find him."

The made it through the ballrrom without incident and without bumping into Lord Lucius. Stephen was still holding onto Joan's hand, to keep her from getting away, when they stepped outside. They walked a little way into the garden when Stephen spotted Elaine sitting on a bench with her eyes closed.

"Elaine," he said, "What are you doing out here?"

She looked up and her eyes flashed as she caught sight of him, holding onto Joan's hand. "I'm merely taking a break from all the dancing. Not that it's any of your concern," she snapped.

Stephen just noticed that was still holding onto Joan's hand and quickly let go. "Are you enjoying your evening so far? I was looking forward to another dance with you tonight, if you aren't engaged for the entire night," he said gently.

He noticed Elaine loosen up immediately. Instead of glaring at him, her beautiful gray eyes dropped to her lap. "Oh, that would be lovely," she said smiling, looking up at him, but not yet meeting his eyes.

He was about to speak, when Joan made a little noise and took off. She must have spotted Robert. Yet again, he wanted to stay with Elaine, but he promised he'd help Joan. So with a hurried excuse to Elaine, who looked extremely angry and disappointed, he ran off after Joan.

***************

Elaine was enjoying the cool night breeze, when Stephen showed up. He was being so nice to her, that she felt foolish for jumping to stupid conclusions. But then he ran off after that girl, who he was holding hands with, and Elaine felt like even more of a fool for thinking Stephen was interested in her. She went back into the ballrrom looking for someone to dance with, but she spotted Lady Cassandra looking down at another lady, the way she looked at her handmaidens sometimes. Curious, she stole her way over near their side.

***************

Sir Eric gave a polite smile as he led Aurora to the dance floor. "I have heard so many things about you, my lady, but I have never had the honor of making your acquaintance."

"Yes, I have seen you around. You have not been a knight in the palace long."

"Only a few months. But one does hear stories about you and how you have the run of the castle. And how you have the Prince's heart in the palm of your hand."

(you are forgiven. )
Aurora laughed at what Sir Eric said.

"You are mistaken sir. I hardly have the run of the castle. My father is only an advisor, and myself a loyal subject to her majesty."

"But surely you do have some influence through your father?"

"He does ask my opinion at times and when he does I give him my best responce. He sometimes takes what I say. As for his Highness, we grew up together. He and I have been through a lot but never became very close. I have watched him grow into a hundsome young man. I do not know what he thinks of me."

"Surely though you wish that he would choose you?" Eric asked looking at her intently.

"That I can not say my lord. I was raised to serve my king and my country. Denmark comes before me. If I were to be as good a Queen as her majesty and a good wife then perhaps I do wish it, but I don't know how I would be in either situation."

((that's fine.its a good setup.))

Elisabeth frowned. "Escuse me Lady Cassandra but I am of the same status as you and you have no right to treat me like a child. And also, you need to take your eyes off the Prince. I'm sure he would never be interested in an ugly old hag like yourself. Although I'm sure one of the mages here could raise someone from the dead and then you would be with one of your own kind. You would be the perfect couple!" she giggle girlishly.
