The sky grew black over the small village, as the people huddled in terror. It was coming!! They could not escape it!! Bands of orcs swarmed down, over-running the village. All who resisted were slain instantly. Some ran, but that was only to choose where they died; Orc long bows found them. Houses burned like torches in the night, now burning in a tall unquenchable flame, now collapsing into ruin. People screamed, but their cries cut as short as their lives, for the orcs knew no mercy. An evil looking orc, more so than the rest, stood atop a pile of rubble and looked towards the mountian top. All grew silent as a black shape settled on the sumit, wreathed in flame and framed against the now red sky. It shrieked horribly and even the orcs quailed before it. It spread its wings and glided down to the town. The orc spoke to the black-speach and with a terrible vengence it began to destroy with and power and fury that the orcs could not match. When all was over, only the charred remains of the towns people and their dwellings were left.

Maethir sat upright, listening intently. Leaping up, he ran for the door. His keen eyes spotted Randiron and he followed him steathily. As Randirion stopped to speak to another Maethir tried to make out what they said. His face grew more determinded as he heard more. When at last the other elf left, Maethir stepped from his hiding place and met Randiron. "I heard that you were going on a scouting mission," the young elf said. "I suppose you shall need me to go as well." Randiron made no reply, so MAethir tried again. "Randiron. You know my skills as a scout! I heard that you are allowed to pick one other to go with you. May I come?"

Randiron silently looked down at Maethir. The Elf had indeed been directed to lead a small scouting party into the Grey Mountains. His grey eyes took keen note of the half-elf half-hobbit standing before him. Randiron's height made Maethir look even shorter than he really was - for the blond-haired Elf was one of the tallest elves he had ever seen.

Randiron was a wanderer - calling no place home. His presence in Rivendell was almost an accident. He hadn't planned on coming here, but now seemed as if it was by design - considering the mission that had been assigned to him.

Randiron knew a little about Maethir, since he had visited Rivendell before, and knew he would never have a moment's peace unless - or until - he agreed to the half-elf's request. And - the Elf did know Maethir's skills. They were not quite what his were, but still...Maethir would be an asset.

Finally, the Elf sighed and nodded. His voice quiet, he replied, "Very well. We leave at dawn tomorrow," and started walking again. Maethir walked along, stretching his legs to match Randiron's longer stride. "Where are we going?" Randiron paused again and looked down at his new partner. Soberly, he answered, "The Grey Mountains. Have you been there before?"

Haldan walked slowly towards Randiron. "I have a command form the Lord Elrond." he called out.
His dark brown hair was left to fall about his shoulders. He wore grey and black. At his side a long sword was fastened at his side, a knife at his belt and a quiver of arrows and a bow over his shoulder.
He strode up to the two, who were looking slightly urprised. "The command is this: that you take me with you."

Randiron's grey eyes flashed briefly in annoyance. That decision must have been made after he had received his mission orders. It wasn't that he didn't mind Haldan's joining them, but it would have been better if... And the way that Haldon had presented himself: 'The command is this...' annoyed him even more. Why hadn't he just said that Hîr Elrond had...or...why hadn't...? After all - he was the mission leader! He should have been told! He bit his tongue to keep from responding with an impolite outburst.

The Elf silently regarded Haldon as he struggled to control his temper, and then sighed to himself. While Randiron did know the Grey Mountains some, he also knew that Haldan was the best choice for guide. He just wished...

At length though, Randiron nodded. "We will leave at dawn tomorrow. We will meet at the Stone Bridge," he said, and then nodding to Maethir, abruptly turned and walked swifly away, still fuming to himself.

He walked through the valley, the beauty of Imladris unnoticed. He finally came to a small clearing, where he stopped. Smashing his fist into a tree, he closed his eyes and contemplated the journey ahead.

Maethir smiled, happy that he was allowed to come, then, suddenly turned towards Haldan, eyed him carefully. "It is!" the half-elf exclaimed. "Haldan! Where have you been? I haven't seen you in years!" Enthusiasm sparkled in Maethir's eyes, but was quenched partially when Haldan merely stared back at him. However, the young elf's spirit did not die so easily. At last some reply was forced from the dark elf, at which Maethir smiled again. He possesed a merry temperment, much more so than most elves, yet was also a bit more persistant; he never easily gave in.

Satisfied, Maethir returned to his quarters, where he saw to his weapons, chiefly his bow. With the bow he was skilled, though not perfect. It had taken what seemed endless practice at achieve his accuracy, but in this Maethir had been persistant and was pleased. He cared for his bow with gentle, yet firm hands; the corners of his mouth curved upward slightly as he worked.

Haldan had not minded seeing Meathir again, but he had not been overly pleased.
Heading back to his corders, he readied his supplies of food and water. He was ready for the journy.

The rabbit stepped closer. It's ears nervously twitched. The little nose was sniffing the air suspiciously. But the rabbit's curiosity drew it forward. One more step. Then another... It was looking at large dark-blue human eyes. Should it run? Humans usually were dangerous. But the eyes weren't moving.

Another step.

Quick as a snake the human's hand moved, catching the rabbit's rear leg. The rabbit squeaked and tried to run away, but the grasp was too strong. Soon the uneven battle was over, and the rabbit hung lifeless in a 16-years old boy's hand. He sat down exhausted. It had taken almost forever to catch this rabbit. Though thin and skinny, it was food. Gudrith rubbed his eyes. He hadn't tasted anything save herbs and scarce berries for days, and he felt his strength fading. It took him two days now to cover the same distance he had walked in half a day a month or so ago. Too slow he had become. Too weak.

He looked at the rabbit in his hand. This would be the first decent meal for a long time. He smiled and set to preparing the meal. Her made only a very small fire in order to avoid thick smoke. It would attract those he was trying to hide from. At least he was sure he was pursued. He hadn't seen anyone yet, but he didn't want to try his luck. It had been good today.

Maethir rose from his place, well pleased with his work. Shouldering his bow and quiver, headed to the stables, where was lodged his horse. Jag ((yes, Jag, redwallreader)) nickered, welcoming Maethir as the young elf entered his stall. Talking, half-singing softly, Maethir inspected Jag to make certain all was as it ought to be. Satisfied, he patted the horse on his neck. Jag shoved him gently, but because of the horse's size, it nearly knocked Maethir over. Grinning, the half-elf shoved back. Jag snorted, then followed Maethir as he led the way out into courtyard. Patting and brushing a bay horse, while murmuring various things, Maethir prepared for the journey. He told Jag what he assumed would happen and the horse bobbed his head making it hard to decide whether or not the horse understood.

(OOC - I think we're leaving in the 'morning at dawn' - if that's ok - unless shirehobbit has other plans/ideas. )

Randiron stayed in the clearing for quite some time, pacing and trying to get his temper under control. He finally did so and started walking back through the valley. He thought briefly about heading back to the quarters that had been assigned him, but rejected it. He knew all his supplies and gear were ready - it was always the first thing he attended to. Even his horse, Nauren, he knew was ready, since he had checked on the brown stallion earlier in the day.

The elf smiled a little at the thought of his horse. Nauren and he were much alike, the horse having a temperment similar to his own. In fact, it was why he and the horse got along so well.

As he walked into the Great Hall of Elrond, he went by unnoticed. For being as tall as he was, Randiron could be unseen whenever he wished.

((very funny, Shirehobbit )

Haldan was also getting his horse ready. It was a huge black (with dark grey spots) horse and would bear none other than Haldan. After the horse was fed, Haldan left for his quarters. Tommorrow was a big day, and he needed his strength.

Giving Jag a final pat, Maethir awaited the coming of his companions. He was eager to start and was impatient. Still, he knew that he must stay calm, thus he spent the tim whispering to Jag. The big bay horse listened respectfully, nickering now and then in response. Suddenly, Jag turned his head away from Maethir, sensing some one near. Maethir scanned his surroundings; perhaps one of his companions was drawing near.

Randiron stood in the Great Hall for a few minutes, silently observing the quiet activity around him. Shaking his head to himself, he realized that...no...this was not where he wanted to be.

As quietly as he had entered, he left the Hall and headed for the stables. Stopping for a few minutes, he watched from behind a tree as Maethir whispered to his bay horse. Seeing the half-elf scanning his surroundings, Randiron stepped forward.

Maethir's eyes brightened at the tall Elf's approach. Nodding to the horse, Randiron asked, "Are you ready to leave in the morning?" "Of course!" was the eager reply. Smiling faintly, Randiron nodded again. "Good." He hesitated for a moment then before speaking again. He was an Elf of few words, and it was difficult for him to start conversations - even when he wanted to. At length, though, he quietly asked, "Maethir, how well do you know Haldan?" Randiron had his own small knowledge, but they would be three travelling, not just two. A good understanding between them might be critical - and - as the leader, he needed to make sure they would all be able to work together.

After sharpening hsi weapons, Haldan had tried to sleep. It usually came easily to him, but now it was elusive. Finnally, he got up, pacing his room and making plans for the journy.

Maethir shrugged. "We knew eachother years ago, though he's always been very close. I suppose i don't know a whole lot about him. And I have no guess as to where he has been these past years. He used to live here at Rivendell, you know." He looked intently at Randiron. "Why? Do you dislike him?" Randiron did not answer, yet Maethir did not press him. "So, we shall start tomorrow?" Maethir began. "That it good." Jag whinnied in agreement and the half-elf grinned. "Yes, indeed, mellon nin," he replied.

Randiron smiled faintly at the response from Maethir's horse. Since he was already at the stable, the Elf went to visit his own. Nauren was not less pleased to see him as Maethir's Jag had been with his master.

Holding his hand out to the stallion, Randiron then stroked the horse's neck. Tossing his head, Nauren butted his head against Randiron's chest. Laughing, the Elf nudged him back. In his horse's company, Randiron was finally able to relax some. In fact, it was the only time he truly could relax.

Randiron stayed there in the stable until after sunset, at which time, he headed for the privacy of his room to rest before meeting the others in the morning.

Gudrith jawned deeply and stretched by the tiny fire. He felt warm and at peace, finally there was something hot in his belly. Yes, this had been a good day.

Reluctantly, he stamped out the fire. It was getting too dark, and the light could be seen. The boy climbed up a big tree he had marked before, and made his bed there in it's branches: some kind of a nest. He had learned to do so in the first weeks after he ran away from his father when he was still in the VERY dangerous area, but he had become pretty skilled in this now. It wasn't the most comfortable bed in the world, but then - he hadn't really known any much better. In fact, it was softer than his own, back there.

Soon he was asleep.

It was almost dawn when a howl was heard. Gudrith woke up instantly, his heart beating loudly in his ears. Trying to calm himself down, he listened attentively.

Another howl answered the first one, then another. Wolves! They were very far, Gudrith could barely hear them, but still he recognized the voices. They were wargs, not normal wolves.

Gudrith felt his blood freezing in his veins. If the wargs will catch his scent... He fingered his dagger, the only weapon he had. He could take out one or two wargs at a time, but if there are more of them, they might tear him in pieces, and he wouldn't be able to do anything about it. He shivered at the very thought of it. He had to het out and away, as soon as possible and as far as possible!

Carefully, Gudrith stood up. It was still dark. He picked a thick branch a little lower, that reached a similar one of another tree, and started moving carefully. He would try to travel this way, as far as he could. Maybe the wargs would lose his scent.

Haldan woke to a brilliant sunrise. Gettting his provisions, he set out to find the others. It was time to leave, and it was not wise to waste time.

Maethir woke Jag shoving him, for the young half-elf had spent the night in the stable. Getting to his feet, he saddled the horse. Maethir could ride without a saddle, though for a long journey, it was more practicle to use one. Jag stood still while he was tacked, knowing what was going on. Eagerly, he stepped out of his stall when Maethir led him. The horse tossed his head; both he and the elf were happy to set out on an adventure.

Randiron had risen before sunrise. He hated being late for anything - and especially didn't intend to be so this morning.

In the darkness, he gathered his equipment, went to the stables and readied Nauren. He smiled mirthlessly to himself when he saw Maethir sleeping in Jag's stall. So much the better, he thought.

Silently, he led his horse to the Stone Bridge and waited for the other two members of the group to arrive.

Haldan arrived there first, on his huge black horse. Looking out of glittering eyes he surveyed the Elf, giving a quiet "Hello." He turned at the sound of footsteps.

Maethir suddenly spotted Randiron on the bridge. "Come on, boy!" he called Jag. The horse needed no more bidding and had not Maethir been swift, would have fairly dragged the young half-elf to the bridge. Upon reaching it, Maethir attempted to look dignified as Rindiron looked critically at him, but grinned in spite of himself.

He swung up onto his horse's back expertly and sat tall there. As no one spoke, he did so. "It's a beautiful morning," he said, but then nearly any morning would merit beautiful from the irrepressible spirit. Jag tossed his head and pawed the ground impatiently, eager to be going.

The Elf nodded in reply to Maethir's greeting, and his lips twitched briefly as he watched half-elf mount his impatient horse. Nodding at Haldan as he mounted Nauren, Randiron only said, "We go."

In silence, Randiron followed Haldan's black horse as they started moving. From the corner of his eye, he saw Maethir bring Jag up to ride alongside him, but he didn't speak. He knew, though that Maethir probably would do so - and soon. The youngster was full of life and excitement.

Breaking the horses into a faster pace, Randiron kept his eyes on their guide's back as they headed out.

Maethir glanced from Randiron to Haldan, but Jag recaptured his attention by jumping to one side suddenly. The half-elf, however, was an expert horseman and was not unseated. Scolding and soothing the horse, Maethir turned back to Randiron and as the elf had expected, began to speak.

"Where exactly are we going?" he asked. Randiron did not answer at once, but continued watching Haldan. At this, Maethir inquired into the matter. "What is it?" the young half-elf wanted to know.

Haldan's expert ears picked up eveything they were saying. Let them talk he thought. he didn't care what they said as long as they didn't interfere with the mission.
He kept his eyes on the road ahead, blinking very seldom.

Randiron was silent for a few minutes. He had mentioned their goal yesterday...hadn't he? Racking his brain he remembered. Yes...yes, he had. Could Maethir have forgotten it already? Or...and the Elf felt himself becoming a little annoyed, as he realized that Maethir was just probably making conversation. He kept the impatience from his voice, though, as he quietly replied, "We are headed for the Grey Mountains." He fell silent again, and though he kept his eyes on Haldan's back, his Elven senses missed nothing as the three rode on.

It was light, finally. The shadows weren't able to hide anything now. Gudrith sat down on a thick branch. He had managed to make his way not touching the grond, although it had been hard at times. He listened attentively.

The forrest was full of life. Birds were heard singing all around, and female deers calling their cubs, little animals squeaking and big birds crying high above the groung. Gudrith looked up at them. How he wished he were an eagle, to be able to soar up in the sky, to live in rocks where nothing and nobody could reach him! Especially his father. He looked down. Maybe if he got higher andfell down, he would be dead, and then he would never have to return. Never see his face, never feel his malice, never...

This way wasn't for him, anyway. He had to live on, had to survive. Why was the will to live so strong in him? Was it the elven-blood that did it? His mother had told him about that. But was she telling the truth or just wishing to get him out of his father;s influence? Anyway, it had worked, whatever her motif was. He couldn't kill himself. But he couldn't run forever. Could he? But on the other hand...

So he sat in the tree a long time. Trying to find answers he didn't have. And maybe never would.

Maethir found his companions exceedingly hard to talk to, but was not detered.

The Shadows changed as the day wore on and they rode in silence. Jag snorted now and then and was answered by Maethir's gentle talking. Shade fell across their path as they rode through woods. Birds were quiet on their perchs, but not completely.

"The Grey Mountains," the young half-elf mused. It sounded alright to him. Any place new sounded plesant. He had never gone far from Rivendell before. Of course, he was allowed to go, but it was obvious that he curiousity was not encouraged. Then again, Haldan had left Rivendell. In his heart, Maethir wondered where the elf had been all these years. Suddenly, he wondered why he had not merely asked. The young half-elf nudged his horse level with Haldan's to ask the question.

Haldan suddenlyl turned and said "It is time to make camp." Then, dismounting, he began to unpack his pack.
He noticed Maethir coming over to him and turned. "What?" he said, fixing him with a glittering stare.

From Nauren's back, Randiron stared at Haldan, and a feeling of anger started to take hold of him. Make camp? Yes, it was time to do so, but he was the leader of this mission, not...

Biting back a sharp comment, Randiron slowly dismounted. In silence, he saw to his horse's needs, but kept a keen eye on Haldan and Maethir as the youngster approached their guide.

"What?" Randiron saw Haldan staring at Maethir. Struggling to keep his temper at their guide's manner, the tall Elf waited for Maethir's answer.

Maethir was the only who remained calm. "I only wanted to ask Haldan a question," he said. "It's not like he's going to kill me." He shrugged. It didn't appear that any question would be well recieved, so he turned away.

After caring for Jag and picketing him, he began to make camp. Maethir was rather good at this type of thing, he soon found and soon had a fire blazing. He glanced at his companions. They were still angry, so he ignored them, but had a feeling that they watched him closely. Maethir couldn't resist looking.

While getting a lembas bread out of his pack, he loacked eyes with Haldan. The elf glared darkly at him in reply. Shaking his head, half-smiling, Maethir turned his back and began to eat his supper.

The night was approaching fast. Gudrith was trying to eat a fat worm he had found under a stone. He had seen some animal eating it, so he decided it was not poisonous. But it tasted so bad that the boy felt sickness rising to his throat. Yack! He wished he had another rabbit, but he had seen none. He threw the worm far away and returned to berries. These tasted far better.

Suddenly he froze. In the soft ground there was an imprint. One that could be left only by an orc, that he knew well. It was fresh, what worried the boy. His nervousness grew as he found another tracks nearby. There had been a group of orcs. Were they looking for him? His heart was beating so fast it dreaded to jump out of his chest. They shouldn't find him, he was not going to return!

Gudrith stood confused. Which way should he take? Go back? He laughed bitterly. Back where? To Mordor? He could continue the direction he had chosen, but where did it lead? He had no idea, he had never seen any map of the Middle-earth. He had hoped to escape the reach of his father by crossing the mountains but it seemed he had been wrong. Anyway, the only possible way he saw in any land that lay far from Mordor, the further the better.

Gudrith crossed the tracks of orcs and headed further in the darkness of the forrest.

Haldan could tell that his order went ill with Randiron. He had seen the Elf's expresion, and could feel that he still wore it in the exact same manner, if not darker.
As night drew to a close, Haldan was last to fall asleep, sitting up long into the night, watching.

Randiron leaned back against Nauren's saddle and tried to sleep, but he couldn't. Dinner had passed in the chilly silence that had taken hold after they had made camp. Silently, he again fumed as he thought about Haldan's words: "You are commanded..." The Elf's eyes flashed as he gazed at the stars above him. Why...? and then he sighed.

Rubbing his forehead with his fingers, he tried to turn his thoughts. Each of the three travellers had brought their own skills to this mission - and for good reason. Somehow, they had to all work together, and as the Leader, it was his responsibility to see that they did so. But how? Randiron railed at himself now. This day had reminded him of why he had always preferred to work alone. He hadn't the skills of tact or easy friendship. As he finally drifted off into elven-sleep, Randiron wondered how under Elbereth's stars he could mold the three of them into a cohesive unit.

It was dark, and it was more or less quiet. Gudrith stood beside a large tree-trunk listening attentively. He thought he had heard something...

No, nothing, just the usual night sounds. He continued his way.

Suddenly there was light ahead. Like a fire. Gudrith smelled the air. No, no large smoke, the forrest didn't seem on fire. So, this meant that there were travellers.

Or orcs.

But it was worth a try. He quietly sneaked closer. Hiding behind a bush he counted the people. Three. And asleep. He was so releaved they were no orcs! Should he wake them? Maybe they had some food... But no, they would probably stab him on the spot seeing his Mordor clothing and orc dagger. A sound caught his attention. A horse? No three of them.

Wait! His heart started beating faster. A horse could bring him far away, where no orc could follow him! Where his father wouldn't be able to get him. Such a temptation...

Gudrith started to crawl near the horses. He picked the closest one because he was the closest.

"Hi horse!" he murmured. "Don't be afraid. It's just me. I'll untie you now and then we'll both go far, far away... Ouch!" he screamed as Jag (for it was Maethir's horse) bit him hard.

"Hey! What are you doing there?! Leave my horse alone!" came a yell and a second later there was an angry male pointing with his sword at Gudrith. Gudrith drew his black orc-dagger but hesitated for a moment, when Jag bit him another time.

"Aw!" he screamed, and saw two more tall males running his way with swords in their hands. Gudrith growled and jumped forward. He ducked under thr first one's weapon and stabbed him in the belly, but his rival turned away surprisingly quickly, and Gudrith's dagger left but a slight scratch. The other two yelled: "Stop, horse thief!", and Gudrith suddenly found himself facing three enemies. He leaped on the left trying to reach one of them. He meant to fight to the end.

Maethir was shoved back by the blow, but mostly unharmed. His hard leathir jerkin had stoutly held against the hastily thrust blow. Upset nonetheless, he dove onto Gudrith, dragging him to the ground. Maethir was shoved away by the desperate Gudrith, while Jag, scared by the skirmish reared. Maethir firmly grabbed Gudrith's arm and yanked him back as the large horse's hooves came pounding down where he had lay. The half-elf breathed heavily as he lay against a tree. He was winded and wounded, though not severely. Jag nudged him curiously.
