Randiron was gone longer than he had planned. Food he found aplenty, and quickly, but the events of the past hours had left him more than nervous.

So, after securing enough meat, he prowled through the area, ranging ever more widely - seeking - searching - hunting. That he didn't find anything did not ease his elven mind at all. At last, with senses still stretched taut, he returned to the small camp. Maethir, he was glad to see was resting, while Loryn and Guddo were talking quietly. And though he was talking, Randiron could see the youngster's eyes still roving - he had been given a job, and was doing it well.

And Haldan... he, of course had set up his own fire and was tending to his own meal, apart from the rest of them.

Muttering to himself, Randiron sat down and began preparing their evening meal.

A quiet sound of a far-away running host of beasts and trembling ground was all their warning. Gudrith wanted to ask Randiron what did he think about it, when the elf rose and listened attentively. Maethir woke and sat up, his head slightly bent to one side. Loryn fell silent in a half-sentence, and even Haldan turned his head.

The sound came closer. The same nervousness as before took hold on Gudrith, and he shivered. The horses became nervous, too. Jag kept shaking his head left and right, while Randiron's steed was hitting ground with his hoove. Loryn's mount neighed sadly.

"Wargs!" suddenly muttered Maethir and looked at Randiron, a troubled look in his eyes.

Gudrith's heart skipped a beat. Wargs? Loryn at his side gasped, Gudrith could feel fear shaking her. He froze. Wargs wouldn't just run by, they were coming this way on purpose. And, if so, they had riders. And there was oly one option, who could ride them. Orcs.

Gudrith knew they could be chasing Loryn, as he village had been attacked by warg-riders, but somehow he felt endangered, and that could mean, that they were after him. His brow darkened, as he squeezed the hold of his black orc-dagger. I am NOT going back!

"What did you say?" Loryn asked. Gudrith realized he had been talking aloud.

"Nothing..." he shook his head and went to stand beside Maethir. The half-elf was wounded, and he might need some help...

Maethir was well enough to seem fully capable of helping himself. The moment the warg cries shattered the stillness, he was on full alert. The group hastily broke camp, preparing to either fight or flee. Randiron gave orders out sharply which were obeyed immediatly. The elves mounted and departed the clearing.

The noises of their enemies quieted, although remained presant as they went. They were riding in a narrow gully now, the sides of which sloped down at a gentle and easily climable angle. Suddenly Loyrn's horse spooked, splaying its legs and staring foreward. The she-elf spoke softly to the horse and it reluctantly continued.

At last, the companions found themselves faced with and impassible area. They were forced to dismount and lead their horses. The going was slow, but some progress was made.

With no warning, a loud screech sounded from the East. The horses yanked their reins from the elves' hands and bolted. Maethir tried to recover them, but the beasts whose speed had aided them, now left them behind.

The half-elf cursed in elvish, but to no avail. They continued on foot. As they went, the walls of the canyon sloped more steeply. At last, they reached a place where their path apparently dissappeared underground. The entrance of the cave was not entirely dark, but dimly lit with a greyish subterrainean light.

The evil sound of the warg's cries sent Randiron into immediate action. "Up!" he cried, "We go, now!" In an instant, the horses were mounted and the small group left, heading down a narrow gully. Randiron didn't have time to wonder that Haldan had obeyed as quickly as the others, when Loryn's horse suddenly faltered. It took the elleth's quiet words to get the animal going again, and every second jarred the Elf's nerves.

And then, the path changed from a gentle slope to a rocky and narrow pass. Reluctantly, Randiron dismounted Nauren and began leading his horse through it. Behind him, the ellon could hear the others doing the same. His horse, however, was uneasy, Randiron could tell, but again, there was no time soothe him.

A piercing cry echoed through his head, and Randiron desperately tried to grab Nauren's reins as the stallion bolted in fear. However, such was the confusion, that even with elven-speed at their command, none of the mounts were caught.

Randiron became more and more nervous as the travelers continued on - and not just from the loss of their horses and the threat from warg-riders. Deeper and deeper into the canyon they went, and as they did so, Randiron began feeling 'hemmed in' when the path abruptly disappeared.

And then, the elf's worst fears were thrown in his face: It now seemed their only way out was through a cave.

Randiron stared at the darkened entrance in dismay. His breath shortened, his fists clenched, and it took every ounce of his elven-control not to shudder in terror.

((Aargh, sorry I haven't posted in so long, thanks to Nifredil for writing me in, and the rest of you as well!))

Loryn quickly ran to help Maethir up onto his horse as the sound of the wargs came closer. Going to her own mount, she swung herself up and turned him towards the others.

They started out riding, and came to a low gully with sloping sides. Her horse suddenly let out a low, short whinny, and she leaned forward, attempting to calm it as it spooked turning this way and that, its legs starting to slip.

She finally got her horse under control, and they came to the entrance of a small cave. Randiron seemed nervous, or so she thought, as they looked for another way. It seemed this was the only way.

Haldan rode at the back of the company until his large black hoprse bolted with the rest.
When they cam to the cave, he considered it, with no apparent recognision on his face.

Gudrith didn't like it. He hated this situation with every single cell of his body. He looked where he had seen Jag's tail last, and wished he had been on the horse's back. Maethir returned empty-handed and sad, and Haldan...

It came suddenly, the emotion of shock and terror. Gudrith swirled around and saw Randiron staring at the dark entrance of a cave. There were only steep rocky wall around, and Gudrith understood they had but one way to go - through the cave. There seemed to be a light in it, maybe it lead to the other side of the wall... Randirin stood like frozen, no emotions showing on the elf's fair face. But inside him... There was a storm. Gudrith concetrated to try to go deeper in his feelings, but an echoing multivoiced howl made him jump.

"Inside! We have to go inside!" Maethir rushed past Randiron, Loryn followed. They didn't seem to feel anything related to the cave, neither did Gudrith, but Randiron did. The image of a terrible dark cave like a flash came to the boy's mind, he had seen it in Randiron's mind then.

Haldan entered the cave with a determined look. A fague feeling touched Gudrith's mind. Did the elf know this place? But he had no time to think about it.

"Come on," he muttered to Randiron, and stood waiting for him. The elf looked questioningly at Gudrith, but then entered the cave, reluctantly, as if every step was a torture, as if he had to make his legs do his will. Gudrith followed, he didn't let the hold of his dagger go and kept casting fearful looks over his shoulder. He was feeling even more endangered than before.

The longer Randiron stared at the cave entrance, the more terrified he became. He watched, numbly, as Maethir, Loryn, and Haldan disappeared into the dimness, but couldn't seem to move forward himself. But it was Guddo's quiet "Come on," that finally shook the Elf from his frozen state. He glanced at the youngster, puzzled for a moment, and then steeled himself.

Slowly, Randiron forced himself to enter the cave, and the elf finally did shudder as his terrifying memories assaulted him. Gritting his teeth, Randiron unsheathed his sword and followed the others.

Maethir, though for no apparent reason besides his willingness to do this, led the way. He had no experiance in traveling underground, but as he was the least bothered with it, he felt that it fell to him to guide, or at least, lead.

The half-elf could feel that his companions were ill at ease in this cave. He did not like it himself, but had it been a more pleasent place, would not have minded being underground. He was part hobbit, and being this, did not loathe holes and such. As he was considering all of this, Maethir neglected to watch his path and tripped. Catching himself quickly, he thanked the inky blackness for covering his mistake.

The light from the entrance of the cave had now faded and was undetecable. The elves, keen sighted as they were, were hard pressed to follow the path. For now, however, the roof was high enough that Haldan and Randiron did not have to bend.

"Stop!" Maethir called sharply to the others, holding up his hand despite that they couldn't see it. "I've come to a cross-roads."

Haldan walkled at the back fo the company, his sword drawn. After they were engulfed in darkness, he stopped and let the others go ahead. He wanted to be out of the way if they met anything...hostile. He slunk after them silently, several hundred yards behind the others.
Maybe they would meet something. He smiled his cold, black smile, thousgh in the darkness nobody could see it.

Gudrith noticed Haldan falling back but didn't say anything. He felt almost stunned by the strength of Randiron's emotions. The elf was trying hard to keep his fears under control, but it was hard, apparently, in the narrow dark cave. Gudrith cursed under his nose. Without an eye-contact he couldn't do anything about it either. But then - why should he? The boy shrugged. He was curious, very curious. What could have happened to influence Randiron so? Gudrith himself was used to dark passages. Barad-Dur was full of them... His eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness and remembered their previous skills.

"Stop!" Maethir called sharply to the others, holding up his hand despite that they couldn't see it. "I've come to a cross-roads."

Gudrith looked carefully past the vague shapes of Randiron and Loryn. Maethir was indeed standing in a place where the passage split in two. Both branches looked equally alike. Gudrith stood staring at them. Which one should they take?

"Well, I choose left," Maethir annouced, when no one spoke. Most would have chosen right when both looked alike, but the half-elf was not 'most'. In the silence, he had compared the two passages, but had found little differance.

As no one apparently disagreed, Maethir led them along the left path. The tunnel was narrowing now so that they could proceed, guiding themselves, by running their fingers along the walls. Although it did not seem possible, it got darker as they pressed on.

Randiron stared at the two tunnels. Such was his state of mind that the Elf couldn't think. It had been all he could do just to walk as far as they had come already.

"Well, I choose left," Maethir annouced, when no one spoke. Randiron gritted his teeth again, and only the fact that Haldan was behind him kept the ellon moving forward into the ever-deepening darkness. He did - as several others - run his fingers along the cold wall, but the chill it sent through him was nearly paralyzing. Ai, if there were only some light! he thought - any light! But there was no answer to his silent plea.

Randiron jumped when something brushed up against him, but then realized it was Guddo. The boy was muttering under his breath, but with the terror his mind was trapped in, the elf couldn't make out the words. Shuddering in the dark silence, Randiron knew he was being of no use - to anyone - and his agony increased.

"I choose left!" left left left left left. The echos bounced of the walls and reached Haldan's ears.
Not left. A cold feeling penetrated his entire body. They muysn't go left. By the time he mustered his voice and emotions, they had already started down it. "Go right! To the right! Don't go to the left!" he shouted out to them.

"Go right! To the right! Don't go to the left!"

Haldan's cry was so loud in Gudrith's ears that he jumped, hitting his head against the wall. In one movement, he swirled around and looked schocked at the tall elf.

"Why?" came the question from Maethir in the front. Everybody had stopped. The itching on Gudrith's back increaded. He wanted to run, but couldn't move.

"Why are you saying this?" a suspicion echoed in Maethir's voice. Gudrith was so deafenned by Randiron's terror that he only barely perceived it.

"Why?!" Maethir demanded. He turned and walked straight to Haldan. He was not pleased to be questioned without a reason and now, considering it, disagreed about choosing the right tunnel. "Come! We must follow this one!" the half-elf stubbornly continued, leaving the others to follow if they wished.

Further ahead, Maethir rounded a corner, paused and waited. He scanned ahead. His heart jumped when he detected a faint light before him. Seeing it made him realize how much he had missed it. Here the passage had opened up into a chamber. Light filtered down through a narrow crack in the ceiling.

"Go right! To the right! Don't go to the left!" Haldan shouted, and the echo of the words pounded so loudly in Randiron's brain and ears that he barely heard Maethir's "Why?!" And then, as the half-elf said, "Come! We must follow this one!" Randiron agreed whole-heartedly. The mornings events had drained what little trust the Elf had in Haldan's guidance.

However, it took Guddo's gentle prompting to get the group's leader moving again. Again, somehow, Randiron was 'aware' that the youngster could 'see' what he was feeling. And something... that same 'something' began stirring in the back of his mind again, but he couldn't seem to focus.

Some 'leader' he was! and Randiron railed at himself. But then... Ai, blessings of Elbereth! There was a dim light up ahead! Randiron moved swiftly forward and stared up at the small slit in the ceiling. It wasn't much, but at least it was something! he thought.

There, in the center of the room, the young half-elf stood. His gaze carefully took in the walls, the ceiling, the size of everything. Maethir turned as he heard the others approach. Deep in his heart he had not been entirely certain that they would follow him. Then his attention returned to the chamber. If they were to remain somewhere to camp, this might be a good place.

Randiron did not look ready to continue and it was obvious that he hated this dark and confinement. Gudrith seemed uneasy as well and Loryn and Haldan were merely silent. Quietly, Maethir voiced his suggestion of staying. Were it up to him, he would continue on until they were out, but Gudrith could not go without some rest and the others........

((ooc:L really sorry! I couldn't get on. We went on vacation, and they were supposed to have internet connection there, but the lab top didn't work with it... Any way, sorry.))

After he yelled, Haldan remained stubbornly silent. If they didn't want to believe him, then they would face the dangerous consequences without his aid.
They halted in the little 'clearing' of light. Haldan stopped, prefering to stay in the cover of darkness. If anything came, he would be the last to be seen.

((Bleah, blast this stupid computer of mine! I'm praying it works long enough to let me post today, and I'll be getting a new one soon hopefully.))

Loryn glanced around the chamber, silently taking in the steep walls that led up to the top. It wasn't a very large place to stay, or a very well-lit one, but it would do for some shelter while they were in this dark place.

"Are we to stay here for a while? I think it would be best to rest and make camp for a while," she quietly said, not hearing anything from the others.

((good to have you back, elfgirl!))

Gudrith shivered looking around. The faint light was coming from another pass on the left. He was afraid that somebody or even a number of "somebody's" would just run into them. But he was just too tired to keep walking. The boy sat down, his back against the cold stone wall and both entrances at his eyesight. He was feeling very tired. And it was not only because of the walk. He felt like having to suffer a constant emotional attack he wasn't able to shut out. This reminded him the everlasting headache he had had in Mordor that had stopped only when he had been far enough from that land.

"I don't like this place. There is some evil here," he said as if thinking to himself, but loud enough for the others to hear. "There is anger, and hate, and malice nearby," he added, casting a sideway look at Haldan.

Haldan settled down, a way back from the others. Ignoring the look Gudrith gave him, he crouched on his haunches, his dagger loose in its sheath, his bow loosely holding an arrow. He sat verly still in the shadows, barely visible.

"Are we to stay here for a while? I think it would be best to rest and make camp for a while." Loryn's soft voice permeated the frozen terror in Randiron's mind. He struggled not to shudder, not knowing whether it was worse to just stand here in this hateful place or to go further in.

But - even through his terror, Randiron could sense Guddo's fatigue, and from the corner of his eye, saw the boy sink down onto the ground with his back resting against the stone wall. And then, the youngster's quiet words caused the Elf's head to whip around. "I don't like this place. There is some evil here. There is anger, and hate, and malice nearby," he said.

Randiron's eyes blazed for a moment and then stared fixedly at where Haldan was sitting in the shadows. The dim light was well bright enough for elven eyes to see clearly, and the guide met his gaze glare-for-glare. However, Randiron agreed with Guddo. The Ellon did not like this place either - and not just because of his fear of caves!

At length, he returned his attention to the others and said, "We can only stop for a little," now feeling it would be better to move on as soon as possible.

"As soon as you are able," he nodded at Guddo, "We will move on." And to himself, Randiron cringed at the thought of the inky blackness ahead.

Maethir did not feel especially encouraged to see his companions quickly quailing in the dark underground which they were in. He wished that he could lend them a little of himself, for he did not feel the fatigue that they experianced.

He looked back and forth between the elves and Gudrith. Although they did not answer his question, it was farily apparent that they would remain here for now. Maethir sighed and walked over to Gudrith. The half-elf put an arm around the boy, steadying him and sitting him down. Maethir smiled softly and clasped Gudrith's hands in his own.

"It will be alright in the end. We will get out somehow. Lasto beth nin. Tolo dan na galad."

((Oh my God, what have you done, shirehobbit!))

Gudrith hadn't really realised he had closed his eyes until he felt Maethir's soft touch. He looked at the half-elf questioningly but didn't avoid his hand. Was he too tired for that?

"It will be alright in the end. We will get out somehow. Lasto beth nin. Tolo dan na galad."

At the words in Elvish, something blew inside the boy's head. A blindening light, a loud scream, a feeling like thousands of wings flapping around him, sharp claws digging in his flesh and tearing him apart. An inmensely poweful whirl of white shining wind took him, lifting him up and bringing somewhere... But the claws didn't let go. Pain pierced Gudrith's thin body, he scroutched on the cold ground, pressing his head in his hands as if wishing to break it, tears flowed from his tightly closed eyes, a loud scream escaped his throat. Something broke inside him, and he lost his senses and collapsed.

Maethir looked shocked and slightly scared as Gudrith shrieked and then blacked out. Vaguely he remembered back to when the boy had gagged on the lembas and felt like punching himself. But why had this happened? To Maethir, all things elvish were good and wholesome. He bent over the still form of Gudrith and moved him to a more comfortable position, then turned and walked to the opposite side of the room.

He sat down and buried his face in his hands. It wasn't that he didn't want to be near his 'friend', but it seemed whenever he tried to help, he ended up hurting him. Some friend he was. The half-elf, had he not been bent on remaining emotionless, would have cried. So far, he had led them into this horrible cave which had cause Randiron to be miserable and barely able to cope and now he had almost killed Gudrith, one of the only people who actually seemed to like him.

Guddo's cry startled Randiron out of his terror-filled reverie. Maethir tried to make the now-unconscious boy more comfortable, and then moved away, grieveing. Loryn sat by the striken youngster, pillowing his head in her lap.

Unbeknownst to him, the Elf was as confused as Maethir. Why would the half-elf's elven words have caused such a reaction in the boy? he wondered. And, too, the occurrance with the lembas... and then suddenly, the niggling thought at the back of Randiron's mind came to the fore. The ellon had spent time in Mordor, and heard the rumors... All thoughts about being in the dark cave fled as the realization struck Randiron, and he stared at Guddo in amazement, shock, and... trepidation, now suspecting the reason why the orcs had been after this young stranger.

The Elf well knew he couldn't be sure until the boy reawakened, though. And... Randiron wondered what this would mean in the larger sense of their mission, if Guddo was, indeed, who he suspected he was...

Randiron retreated to the other side of the cave where Maethir was sitting, and knew it to be so. He leaned down and gripped the half-elf's shoulder tightly. Without looking at Maethir, the Elf whispered, "Av-'osto, mellon nín!*" Maethir looked up, surprised. With his eyes still on the ailing Guddo, Randiron quietly said, "This is not your fault!"

Gudrith's shriek echoed in the passages. A group of three orcs that was carrying fresh meat stopped listening. But the sound died out and didn't repeat.

"What was it?" one of them asked.

The others shrugged and looked at each other, trying to find the answer anywhere but in their own heads. The first orc couldn't figure anything out, either, so they just moved on. They still had very much to do.

Gudrith was slowly coming back to his senses. It felt like emerging from a thick black oily water. Part of him didn't want to wake up, reluctant to go on with that constant torture... But it just was stronger than him, and he was back.

The boy took a deep breath. He felt... alive. The pain had ceased, only the memory of those awful claws digging deep in his flesh made him shiver. Somehow it felt easier to breathe. He lay so for some time, listening to the quiet voices of Maethir and Randiron. Gudrith scanned the emotions around. Loryn was worried, Maethir was unhappy and surprised, Haldan - suspicious, but Randiron... Something about that elf had changed, he just couldn't quite catch, what exactly. Loryn was the closest...

Wait! How did he know that? Gudrith's eyes popped open to find the troubled look of the girl upon his face. Immediately, with a relieved smile she announced:

"He's awake!"

Haldan watched this scene, waiting for orcs to come, drawn by the boy's cry. Haldan wanted to move again. He didn't like the light. It showed them too plainly.
Randiron went over to Meathir and said something in quiet Elvish. Haldan didn't catch anything, but wished he would be silent. It was too dangerous for talking.

Maethir was somewhat comforted by Randiron's words. It helped to know that he was not blamed. He tried to think of a reply, but found that he couldn't speak without betraying himself. It was at times like this that he was frusterated with himself, times when he felt extremes of emotion. He just looked at Randiron and forged a half-smile. Maethir hoped this was understood.

After a silence that seemed forever, Loryn spoke up.

Immediately, with a relieved smile she announced:

"He's awake!"

Maethir immediatly rose and walked towards Gudrith. He hung back a little and seemed afraid to touch him. The young half-elf had a question that he wanted to ask, but he wasn't sure how to. He wanted to know why elvish things pierced Gudrith so, but he didn't know if this would be well-recieved, or if the boy would even want to be near him now.

Randiron, too, had questions racing through his mind as he watched Maethir bending over the boy. Loryn was relieved when Guddo opened his eyes, and was smiling widely.

Haldan just stayed in the shadows and watched in silence. Randiron could see a look of disgust on the tall elf's face as he observed the half-elf's worried face.

Slowly, Randiron crossed the small chamber himself. His eyes seemed to bore into Guddo's, and the elf saw fear, anxiety, and surprise reflected in them. And, without speaking a word, Randiron grasped the truth. Ai, Eru! he breathed to himself. What are we going to do now? Was it possible this child could aid their mission? But how had he...? the elf wondered.

In a slow, graceful movement, the ellon knelt in front of the youngster. Very quietly, and gently, and attempting to project an aura of ease that he definately did NOT feel, Randiron asked, "Gudrith, how did you escape from Mordor?"

Maethir remained still for a moment after Randiron's question, then a noise caught his attention. He edged towards the tunnel as quiet as he could, then started down it. His guard was immediatly put on alert as the sound of a few proceeding towards them reached him. He turned and sprinted back to his companions and told them of this new danger. The half-elf glanced back towards the tunnel. "They", or whatever was coming, were still a ways off, but that was no reason to dely action. Maethir hastily made note of their surroundings. There was one other exit from the chamber: an archway, blocked by a door, but the wood was rotten and escape was possible.

Haldan stood rigid, listning to the approaching footsteps. He drew an arrow and loosely fitted ti to his bow. He was ready, once again.
