Gudrith saw Randiron approaching him, the tall elf's emotions were too mixed to grasp. The boy sat up, feeling afraid somehow from what Randiron would tell him. He looked too determinate to be just inquiring about his health.

"Gudrith, how did you escape from Mordor?"
came a quiet question.

It felt like a lightning stike. Gudrith gasped and pressed his back against the cold stone wall. How could he know my name? Cold fear took hold of him, as he stared into Randiron's eyes, not even able to open his mouth to answer.

He missed Maethir's leave and return. Finally Gudrith just couldn't endure Randiron's questioning look and dropped his gaze. Only one question was spinning on his mind: "How did he know? How could he have possibly known?"

"There is somebody er even a group coming our way," Maethir whispered. Thankful for the intrusion, Gudrith jumped up, ready for action. Anything to avoid those questions!

Haldan moved farther back in the shadows. He took the arrow from his bow and drew his wickedly long, sharp dagger. It was almost a small sword. He then moved out from his hiding place. He would almost welcome battle.

"There is somebody er even a group coming our way," Maethir whispered and Gudrith immediately jumped up, to go see. Randiron's eyes followed the youngster, and though he hadn't 'answered' the elf had seen the truth in the boy's eyes. There was, however, no time to question further.

Randiron swiftly unsheathed his sword, and cringed for a moment to himself as he regarded the door. However... "Through the door," he ordered, and with a powerful stroke, bashed it into the rotton wood. "Go!" and the elf waved Maethir through, with Gudrith hard on his heels. Loryn took a deep breath and followed.

There was a long staring match between Randiron and Haldan, as both of them seemed to want to go last.

Haldan stared at the other elf, meeting his gaze. Who would break first, he wondered. They stared for a long while then...

Maethir waited for Randiron and Haldan to follow Gudrith and Loryn, but when they didn't, he leaned through the opening. The elves were staring at eachother. Frusterated by their wasting of time, he verbally urged them to follow. At last, they complied. Once through, Maethir began to try to barrackade the doorway. The wood had disintigrated into scrapes near where they had broken the lock, but it was shakily whole. The half-elf desperatly tried to find something the brace it. Suddenly and arrow shaft struck the door, piercing it and stopping close to Maethir's face. He held his breath, fervantly hoping that the orcs would not realize their presence.

[I'm leaving for vacation in a few days, so I probably won't be able to get online again until I get back. You guys can go on, if you want to fill in for Maethir. Just stay within his character and don't kill him off. lol. See you when I get back..... Shirehobbit]

Randiron would not give in to Haldan's glare - at least not until Maethir urged the two elves forward. With eyes blazing, he snarled, sheathed his sword, and followed Maethir through the door. But when an arrow narrowly missed the half-elf, both he and Haldan whirled with bows at full ready. "Get out of the way, Maethir!" Randiron commanded quietly, but firmly.

The band's leader then cringed inwardly, wondering if, indeed, the orcs had heard him smash the door. Waiting tensely, Randiron half-hoped that the beasts just suspected the wood had crashed from age, and not from intruders. The other half of him, however, was itching for orc-blood.

Haldan too fitted an arrow to his bow. He shot, not aiming, in the direction the arrow had come. He fitted another one, waiting. This was more to his liking. He only wished that there were more of them.

Suddenly, a small orc cam around the corner, crouchung low, as if he was smelling. Haldan fired his arrow, but before he was able to kill the orc, it looked up and gave a squeal (Which, though it was cut short by his arrow, was very loud).
Haldan loosened his sword in its sheath and notched another arrow.

Randiron's arrow struck another of the orcs. There weren't many, but the warning cry, short though it was, seemed louder as it echoed in the small cave.

There was no room for anyone else but the two tall elves at the doorway, so Haldan and the elven leader finished them off. Without looking at the guide, Randiron commanded, "Go!" pushed the taller ellon down the dark passage ahead of him, and traded his bow for his sword.

Maethir and Gudrith slowly led the way, and in the black silence of the tunnel, Randiron's fears assaulted him once more.

Haldan fought a surge of Anger. 'He can't push me!' he thought.
He drew his sword and watched Randiron, waitng for an advantegous moment to fight.

Loryn watched as the other fought, looking at the arrow shafts lying on the ground next to them.

"How many do you think there are?" she asked, looking at Randiron as she saw him tense in the darkness and closeness of the cave.

He merely shook his head, so she drew her sword from her waist. At a last thought, she had grabbed it off of her horse's back, although she didn't think she would be needing it down here. Turns out she was wrong.

She watched Randiron and Haldan, waiting for some kind of signal from them.

Haldan leapt into the battle, his blade singing as he sliced the air. He felt the exilerahtion of battle as he cleaved an orc helm down the middle.
He dodged an arrow, ducked a sword, and disbatched an orc. These orcs were not a problem to any one.
Then he felt a stabbing, searing pain in his hand as a sword narrowly missed taking his whole arm.

Maethir was dipleased to be pushed ahead, but obeyed, guiding Gudrith with him. He whirled at the shriek from the orc. He stood undecidedly, as arrows were exchanged. At last, as the tall elves charged, he joined them. He made neat work while he could, using his bow, his favored weapon, to eliminate some orcs. He realized, however, that this noise would betray their position. They must finish here and move on before reinforcments came. He cast a quick glance toawrds Haldan in time to see him wounded. The half-elf sighed; it seemed fate would not favor them. Maethir's arrows were spent. He grasped the hilt of his sword and began to fight a path the the elf to help him.

Haldan stopped only seconds to feel his pain. Then, a more powerful emotion took its place. Fury. He killed the orc who had given him the injury, killed all the nearby orcs, and started cleaving them like a feild of wheat, using his sword like a scythe.
He recieved imnumerable injuries, none of them lethal.
He was just about to finish off a particularly ugly orc when he was hit in theright arm with an arrow.

Gudrith stood watching. The emotions of the fighters were overflooding his senses, but now he discovered he could quiten some of them and listen more attentively to those he chose. He felt the mad fury of Randiron and a similar one in Haldan, and a flicker of despair in Maethir's mind. Loryn seemed to be losing her hope as another horde of orcs poured in. Those were fresh and rested, while Gidrith's companions were getting tired of the uneven fight. The boy winced at the injuries Haldan received.

He knew he had to do something, just couldn't gather his spirit. Then he saw an arrow hitting Haldan and Maethir rushing to his aid. Something moved inside the boy's heart. Maethir had left behind all the enemity and hurts, and was ready to stand by Haldan's side at the cost of his own life...

Gudrith suddenly stepped forward, grabbed a torch and stood in the middle of the cave.

"RAKH!" he yelled in the Black Speech, "Stop!", allowing his mind to flow through the minds of the attackers. The orcs paused, giving the elves some free air. The yellow eyes of the leader turned to Gudrith. The boy glanced art Randiron. Yes, you were right. Forgive me, took a deep breath, and went on in the Black Speech:

"You want me. Is it not so?! Then catch me!!!" he threw the torch at the orc leader and run away. The orc avoided the burning weapon and ordered the greatest part of his horde to get Gudrith. With a roar, the orcs rushed past the elves and down the dark tunnels.

As the orcs stopped, Haldan stood, in a kind of haze, waiting. He was getting impatient. He wanted to fight.
He he looked at the arrow in his shoulder, as if for the first time. snapping it off at the point, he threw the wooden shaft at the orcs.

((OOC: Sorry - major writer's block this week! ))

Haldan wasn't the only one receiving his share of slices, and each one only fueled Randiron's ire. But then, at the sound of Gudrith's Black Speech cry, the elf whirled and stared. The boy glanced at him, and in shock, Randiron recieved his mind message: "Yes, you were right. Forgive me." And with another yell, threw his torch at the orcs and ran down the corridor, the bulk of the evil beasts running full-tilt after him.

Swiftly, the remainder of the group finished off what orcs remained, and then Randiron took quick stock of their situation. Haldan bore the worst injuries, but there was little time to spare. Locking glares with the taller elf, Randiron asked coldly, "Can you move?" "Of course!" Haldan replied, disdianfully. "Good, bring up the rear." And without another glance behind, Randiron picked up Gudrith's abandoned torch and headed out through the tunnel, not caring who, or if anyone else, followed him. They had to get Gudrith back!

Maethir cringed at the speaking of the Black Speech, then stared as Gudrith led the orcs off in chase after him. The half-elf instantly obeyed his urge to run after his friend, but a strong hand yanked him back. Randiron held him tightly.

"If you get caught, you won't help Gudrith," the elf stern voice brought Maethir to his senses.

"But what then?" The young half-elf pleaded, knowingly he was wrong, but hating the feeling of helplessness. He let his weapon drop from his hands and sat down heavily. Hiding his face in his hands, he wept, letting all of the emotion that he had kept at bay, now flood over him.

Randiron halted his headlong run into the cave when Maethir passed him, and grabbed the half-elf's shoulder.

"If you get caught, you won't help Gudrith," he said sternly. "

"We have to move together," the elf replied, and glared at the injured Haldan. Well Randiron could see the disgust in the taller ellon's eyes at Maethir's tears. "Gudrith knows what he's doing," Randiron continued, suddenly being sure of it - now that he knew...

"How do you know that?" Maethir asked, incredulously, his weeping suddenly arrested. "I know," the elf replied, but said no more. It wasn't for him to betray Gudrith's background - at least not yet - and since the boy hadn't mentioned it to Maethir, it was better left unsaid.

Gudrith was running as fast as he could. He was going deeper in the mountain, confidently moving through the thick darkness. He needed no light, he could see just as well as the orcs. Being quicker, he would be able to escape, if not for their noses.

Gudrith knew they would track him down following his scent only. The boy hoped he would be able to use it against them. whenever the cave divided, he picked the left branch. Gudrith clinged to a desperate and almost impossible hope that the caves would have interconnecting tunnels, as was the custom of orcs - to interconnect everything. So he ran, ran, and ran... Until his heart was about to jump out of his chest and the cave started turning upside down. Breathing heavily, Gudrith leaned against the cold rough wall. His knees were trembling, his all body was begging for rest. But he couldn't afford it, so he started moving again. Step by step, then faster. Suddenly, Gudrith stopped, and a sickly smile appeared on his face. Le hannon, Eru! he whispered the words his mother had taught him in the darkness of Mordor. He had been here before! With new strength, he stood straight again and walked. And again he turned left and left. He was too tired to run now, so he just walked leaning on his left hand that he dragged along the wall. At times he even closed his eyes, fell down and got up again, just to continue the everending walk in circles. He cut his hands on the sharp stones, and his left hand was bleeding, but it didn't matter.

It was the fourth or fifiht, or maybe even the sixth time he made the full circle when he finally stopped, listening carefully. No sign of orcs was heard. He slid down to the uneven floor. His hands were shaking. He had to rest for a moment. Now, where was the beginning of this circle? He couldn't remember anymore. He had to find it, had to leave it the same way he entered. With an effort, Gudrith stood up again and walked again.

At first he thought he heard and saw a hallucination. I couldn't be... But it was. Down the passage on his right he saw a dim torch-light. He thought he had heard Loryn's voice. What if he was wrong and it was just another group of orcs? What the difference? He was too tired to escape them now. Gudrith turned and walked to meet the light. When he felt he would collaps if he made just another step, he stood and waited, as tall and stern as he could be. The light came closer, then it stopped. Gudrith heard a sword leaving it's sheath.

"Guddo!" he recognized Maethir's happy voice. Happy? Then suddenly there was Randiron who first cupped his face asking him something, Maethir was babbling excitedly, but Gudrith couldn't catch a word, then he was lifted up and carried, his head rested on somebody's shoulder, and the world slipped away. Relief and sleep had overcome him.

Maethir turned from sorrow to utter bewilderment. How in Eru's name had the boy returned, seemly of his own accord without pursuers. The half-elf reached out to steady Gudrith as he swayed from exhaustion, then looked questioningly at Randiron. What was going on? Instantly, Maethir hated these tunnels as he hadn't before. There was nothing but evil lurking here, he could feel it, but what could be done.

Maethir felt sure that the orcs would return. One could not merely escape that easily! But for now, perhaps, they would be safe. He had to take a chance! He left Gudrith to Loryn's care and grabbed his sword from where it had dropped. Casting a look that begged forgiveness from his companions, the half-elf ran. Sprinting silently through the passageways, his elvish eye sight being his only guide.

He racked his memory, now finding this path familiar, now this one strange, but he locked the maze in his mind. At last he heard voices, harsh hated voices of his enemy. He pressed himself against a wall, expecting to see orcs presently round the bend up ahead, but none came, yet the noises advanced. Pressing to the wall, he found that one must be able to hear into other passageways, thus being decieved as to the approach of another.

More carefully, he continued. He had to find the secret to this place. A deafening noise rose steadily and suddenly, shaking where he stood. Maethir crept forward. Each moment seemed as though his path should soon empty into a large cavern and each moment an experiance in suspence.

At last, torch light greeted him; he found himself nearing the edge of a drop off. He looked down into a chamber of sorts where was a mass of orcs. A large one stood, shouting to his horde in the filthly speach. It was un intelligable to Maethir, but then the speaker stopped. Silence prevailed as the orc turned and called to a large tunnel. A belching of flames issued forth. That meant one thing: Dragons!

The half-elf shuddered at the evil which inhabited this realm and realized how foolish he had been to leave his companions. If it was not too late, he must now focus on finding them again. Turning, he fled. Desperately trying to find the halls he had travelled on before.....

Randiron grabbed the exhausted boy just before he fell. He barely noticed Maethir's glance, but raged inwardly when the half-elf ran off. He should have known Maethir would do something like that! the elf thought laying Gudrith against the cavern wall.

Quickly, the elleth knelt and examined the child. "He'll be all right," Loryn said, "He just needs rest." Randiron nodded, and agonized. They didn't have time for this! And now, Maethir... The elf felt the darkness closing in around him again, now that it was quiet, and barely repressed a shudder.

And then, he perked up, and gripped his sword more tightly. Forgetting (for the moment) his antipathy towards their guide, Randiron asked Haldan, "Did you hear something?" Straining his elven-hearing to the limit, and peering into the dark tunnel, Randiron wondered. Was it Maethir returning - or was it something else he had heard?

Haldan nodded. There had been a slight sound.
His arm was throbbing. The arrow hadn't gone deep, but it had still pierced his arm. At least the bleeding was stopped.
He drew his sword in his right arm, despite the pain.
The half hobbit had finally run off. Probably scared and lost his mind. The elf sneered inwardly.

(( OOC: This is Nifredil's post that she e-mailed me... ))

Burgzur turned to meet the group of orcs that entered the Fifth Hall - one of those where the dragons were being kept.

"Well?" he growled at the heavily breathing orcs.

"We were tracking them, as you ordered, but they entered the caves. And we fought them..."

"What caves?"

"These, my Lord!"

"You mean - they entered THESE caves and you still haven't caught them?!" a dark menace ringed in Burgzur's deep voice.

"We almost did. But then Gudrith ran away, and we tracked him, but we lost him."

"He ran away where?"

"Somewhere here..."

The cave seemed to collapse on Burgzur's head.

"You want to say that Gudrith is inside these caves?! Block all the exits! Don't let anybody enter nor exit, be it orc, fly or dragon. And get him, now!!!" Burgzur wasn't surprised they had lost Gudrith. But he won't, once the boy is in his hands...

Something caught his attention, a soft fragrance... A hobbit? No, an elf...

"Somebody is near! Get him!" Then a better idea crossed his mind. He had to do it himself, or those stupid creatures will let the boy slip through their fingers, like back then, in Mordor. "Stop! Grammar and Hrumm - go with your groups from left and right around, search every cave, I will follow with my group... and our pet."

The orcs dashed away, and Burgzur's fighters started to pull up the chains that were lifting the paltform the dragon was sitting on. Soon, the fiery creature was up, smoke emerging it's large nostrils. Burgzur ordered one of the orcs to follow the prey's tracks, and pulled the dragon forward. He would have a little hunt.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Wake up! Wake up, Gudrith! Up...up...up... His mother's voice echoed in his mind. No, he cringed inwardly, I don't want to!

But you have to! Wake up, it is not over yet...
Gudrith's eyes popped open. In the dark cave the silhouettes of Randoron and Haldan stood high above him. Loryn was kneeling beside him, everybody was listening.

Then Gudrith heard it. Somebody was approaching.

"Where is Maethir?" he suddenly asked. Gudrith felt everybody jumping inside at his voice.

"Somewhere over there. He just ran away," Loryn answered when nobody else seemed to be willing to.

"Ran away?! How? Why?" Gudrith sat up abruptly. Loryn tried to push him back, but the boy refused to sleep. Maethir was gone!

He stood up and listened to the sound. Somebody WAS approaching, and he hoped it was Maethir.

"Ran away?! How? Why?"

"Shhh, you need to rest here for a while. We can't have you collapsing again.." Loryn tried to calm him, but he stood up nevertheless, despite her warnings. "Guddo, you need to rest. You aren't helping Maethir by getting yourself killed."

At the same time though, she wondered why he had run off, and if he was coming back. She didn't think these orcs had just given up their search when Gudrith outran them.

"We have to find him," Gudrith said, still stubbornly standing in front of her. She stood up to face him.

"Are you mad? The four of us against whatever it is that's in these caves? These orcs can wipe out an entire village, I've seen them do it. Maethir isn't a fool, he wwill get back to us soon enough."

Even as she said these words, she wondered and hoped that she was right.

Maethir silently made his way, feeling tense the and oppressed in the confining spaces of the tunnels. He ran his finger-tips along the walls, pressing harder, unconciously, because of his nervousness.

Suddenly, a hard tramping caught his attention and he ran. Maethir had never felt hunted before, but now he did. Struggling though to do so, he remained some-what calm. Keeping careful note of his position, he was relievd to find himself nearing the passage where his friends were. Then a horrible realization dawned on him. If he was being followed, he would take his pursuer to his friends, yet if he wasn't, it was important that he rejoined them to tell them his findings.

The half-elf stopped and listened, trying to decern one way or another.

Randiron stood looking into the dark tunnel, fuming. How dare Maethir run off like that! he thought, and then his nose wrinkled. "Faugh!" he said softly, and then began swearing.

"What is it?" Loryn whispered, and came to stand next to him, following the he-elf's gaze intently. "Yrch!" he replied, and silently unsheathed his sword again. Wherever the half-elf was - and whether he was headed back again, Randiron didn't know, but Maethir's escape-route was now cut off it seemed.

"Wake Haldan," he ordered the elleth quietly, and then turned to Gudrith. "Gudrith," he whispered, "You're going to have to lead us. We've got to find Maethir - and quickly!"

Maethir stopped again. All his senses were telling him that there were orcs ahead. The orcs had returned to where his friends were; they hadn't been following him! He closed his eyes, then grasped his sword hilt. He heard shouts as Randiron organized Loryn, Gudrith, and Haldan. There was no way they could stand this time. Maethir ran forward, nearly colliding with the back of the orc collumn. Yelling in elvish, he slew as quickly as he could, knowing once surprise was gone, so was his advantage. As the orcs swarmed, Maethir slew a few more, then fled, yelling so they could follow his voice.

They did, but their knowledge of the tunnels was greater. Soon Maethir was hopelessly lost, then faced with a dead end. The enemies closed in and he fought. But slowly his guard was beaten down, then something struck him hard and he knew only blackness.

Nobody needed ot wake Haldan. Once he had herd the word yrch, his sword had been drawn.
He fought, slower this time, using mostly his left arm. His right arm burned, but he absorbed the pain, using it as a stimulant to amke his forget the rest of his aching limbs.

(( Here's Nifredil's post... ))

Gudrith looked up at Randiron. Did he really mean what he had just said? That he should lead?

Maethir's scream interrupted his thoughts. Gudrith instinctively reached forward and felt Maethir's desperate valour and his intention to sacrifice himself... and the black hate of the orcs. Pain pierced his head as he touched them, the same that had tortured him all tose long dark years in Mordor.

Randiron drew his sword intending to rush to Maethir's aid, but Gudrith put his slim hand on the tall elf's arm.

"No," he said, "you will not help him. He is lost for us... now. Let's go."

Randiron stood hesitantly, then nodded.

"You are right. Let's go."

"You mean to abandon him? Just like that? When he sacrificed himself to save us?" Loryn stared at them in disbelief.

Randiron turned towards her.

"We can't help him now, Loryn. We are outnumbered. We have to leave..."

"How can you be so sure? Maybe he ran away, and if we hurry, we can..." she suddenly stopped, as she noticed Randiron throwing a meaningful look at Gudrith. The boy was standing and looking as if at nothing.

"Just because he told you so? Just a few days ago he was your enemy, and now..."

"Loryn, please! Trust me! And trust him! Let's go! Or we all will face Maethir's destiny."

The girl shook her head in disbelief, but followed them. Haldan was reluctant to go, he wanted rather to stay and fight, but he obeyed Randiron's order, too.

Gudrith led them back, then he abruptly turned left.

"Here," he muttered. They were walking along wide and narrow, high and low passages, sometimes stopping and freezing when orcs were near, sometimes running. Gudrith walked almost with his eyes closed. He was slowly extendong his senses over the whole net of caves and sensing every orc that was there. Once, when they came too near, he fought a temptation to enter their minds and turn them away, but then he remembered the promise he had made, and just hoped they would not smell them.

****************************

"Stop!" the orc leader yelled seeing the strange short elf falling down. "We'll take him to the Lord. He'll decide what to do with him".

Haldan felt no pity for the half-elf. He had been to weak to stand under the great preasure. Better he go now withour taking any other with him, then later when they might alol die defending him.
