I'm also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's the most important aspect of my life. Haha, I've been a little slow to join in on the forums much, but I found this forum today. It's neat to find out a little more about everyone here. It's also nice that we have found a place that can bring us all together, regardless of our personal beliefs!

I am Christian-non-denominational. I use to be Baptist and a couple of others but I found the Baptist faith to confining for me. I am so glad to see such a variety of faiths here. It is heart warming.

I am a born again believer in Jesus Christ the one and only Son of God. I go to a babtist church, but I believe what the Bible says, not just what my pastor says. I believe in Love, Hope, Peace and Freedom in Christ.

Protestant, but I've been brought up quite secularly. Still, I consider myself a believer, but I don't like the idea of a restricting and/or dogmatic kind of faith. Least of all one that conjures violence against those who do not share it...

In any case, when they talk about "religions are all the same", people don't usually mean the specific differences of story, actors and rituals. They are usually looking at the larger principles of sacredness of life, love, service to others, and spiritual transformation by works of piety or effort

OK. I don't meen to be nit-picky here or anything, but people are usually looking at how they see other religions and are comparing them. Yet a common misconseption of Christianity is that you have to do something. And that's false. The only thing needed is to admit you've sinned (everybody--you know you have!) and that Jesus is God's perfect son, and that he came so that anyone who believed in Him and everything He stood for could be saved.

I have seen so much pain and sadness that I cannot believe that there's a god who allows that.
I do not know what I do believe, I just know I don't believe in an almighty god

You know, originally, God didn't want that to happen. Yet Lucifer--Satan--wanted power, and he created discord on earth. Now, God is just waiting till the perfect time for Him to restore perfection to the world.

The only reason that there is pain and sadness in this world is because God gave man a free will--He didn't want his creation to follow Him blindly, just because He created them--and because man has a free will, they can mess things up. I know that someday, when God is ruling on earth, everything will be perfect: there will be no more hunger, no more pain, no more sorrows, no more suffering. He's just waiting for us to reach out to Him. God doesn't want suffering. He wants joy. But in an imperfect world, there are going to be imperfect things--you know?

I'm with you. I am a Bible believing christian. We are all given free will to believe what we want. But Gods word is ...and all you have to 'do' is believe. 'You ask me how I know He lives...He lives within my heart.'
No offence to anyone, I respect you all.

I'm a Bible believing christian as well. I've been it since I was little, and I never doubted whether God excists or not.

Why?
I don't really know. It's this feeling inside my heart, I feel that He is with me, helping me when in trouble, like a best friend.
I know it's not such a good description... forgive me

If any questions, just ask me

However, there are parts in the BIble that say that a person cannot get into heaven unless he gives away all his possessions to the poor.

Luke 14:33: So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

Matthew 19:21-22: Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

I apologize if this is not the place for this. But parts of this thread seemed to be on the topic of Christianity, and I think a lot of people turn away from Christianity when they see other people praying and thinking that they'll go to heaven when they don't actually try to change their ways and do not go out of their way to be generous.

I think that Jesus was telling the man he had to get rid of his things to remove the temptation, because he would rather have them instead of salvation.

I apologize if this is not the place for this. I thought it was more like "Don't store up your treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, but store your treasure in heaven..." Something like that, Jesus was telling us that if we get attached to the things of this world (e.g. money, clothes, things...) then we will not inherit the kingdom of God, but if we do things for God's glory and things of eternal value, we will.

I agree people should change their ways, though.

Edit: Btw, I 'm a Christian

Thanks. I dunno, she seems to be right for me. Of course, a lot of people worship other dieties...such as those from Greek and Celtic beliefs. Etc. I find it facinating all around Though I believe that the god and goddess trully do not have any names, but it is a reflection of what we ourselves have become, or wish to become and believe in. If that makes any sense at all

Hi, minstral_of_the_dawn . well said. Although I am a Unitarian, it is the pagan way that most touches my heart and gives me a path that does not get so tangled up in the politics of religious organizations and avoids the reliance on debatable source documents.

What I mean is that most mainstream Christian ministers and scholars find too many inconsistencies in the Bible (even within the New Testatment) for it to be a document of historically true events. As a set of powerful parables and a guide to right living among humans, it's a very rich source. No less so than the Upanishads, or the writings of Buddhism, or similar documents.

Apologies to those of you who believe in the literal truth of the Bible. No offense intended. If your belief works for you, then God Bless you.
There are many paths up the same mountain.

That makes sense, though I can not comment on other's religions. Much like the Wiccan reed says that we shall accept all religions, and not descriminate against them, I have yet to explore most other religions. I have not the right to say what I think of things I do not know.

There are inconsitencies with all religions, there are always some faults to be found. In all religions, including my own. But I suppose that that is what makes things so special. We recognize that religion was created as an image of whatever god we believed in, and we as humans understand that perfection can not be reached by mortal hands. So in a way, religion is but a painting, half completed, what we think we see is what we portray in our practices. But as to the real truths we can not yet grasp them. Perhaps one day we shall.

I do not think that it is time yet, however. We are still but young shoots barely come to leaf. And we must be careful that we do not harm our good mother in the process and ruin all chances of finding out what is absolute.

Yes, religion is a very touchy subject. Try as we might to think of it as soply a done deal or a factual matter open to proofs, it is, as you say minstral, a work in progress.

Religion and spirituality (there is a difference in y mind) are highly emotional subjects and politically charged as well.

Fortunately, the people who hang about on Council of Elrond are the nicest, most tolerant and mature folks I have encountered in a lot of places. We wear our differences with respect, it seems and are quite open-minded.

Bless you all.

In Canada, tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. I am grateful to all of you who make CoE possible. May your paths be strewn with love, wonder and all the resources you need to live well.

Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again.

Hello!I was baptised as a roman catholic, but I don't practised. I'm more a spiritual person than a religion person. To me religion and God are two different things, the lattest being to great to be framed in an organisation. There is a lot going on in the universe, a lot we don't know and religion does'nt have all the answers, but we'll be pretty naive to say there is nothing there, a great force or a great mind, and sometimes if we pay attention we know it's there.Call it as you wish it does'nt make any difference, there is something and we all know it!The choice belongs to us: to see it within a religion frame or to try to expand our minds to all sorts of possibilities. This is what I think.

That seems to me to be very wise and well said, Dimple_Bumbleroot You are right, there are many possibilities that can only be one truth. It is just what we chose to do with all of those possibilites. Do we keep our minds narrow? Or open them up to all I think spiritual is far greater then religious. I mean, the idea od the spirit is that it is the free-floating entity of peace. (or something along those lines) Religion can sometimes be very strict and not as free floating. Ah well. it is all how you look at it I guess.

Tyrnael - "liminal" as in on the edges of things? On a boundary between one thing and another?

That could describe a lot of people I know. Their spirituality in a work in progress.

It's kind of interesting, you know. Religion and spirituality have become more of a chosen part of our lives. People actually investigate and consider it. In the past, you pretty much inherited a set of beliefs from your family or community. It took some force (war, oppression, disenchantment) or person (powerful teacher, cult leader) to cause any major changes.

That's a tough question to answer. I would consider myself to be Pagan I suppose. That is the religion that fits the closest to what I believe.

Religion is not infallible. It is a man-made creation. So no matter what you believe, there will always be holes in it's logic. To me, it's about what works best for you.

There're many ways to learn about wiccaning. Check out your local bookstore or you can talk to someone you know who is a wiccan. My religion is Muslim.

Mae govannen, frododan14, Glad to see another pagan enthusiast here. Allow me to recommend some readings and web sites:

On
this site you will find the United Pagans organization. It answers some basic questions about paganism.

Here is a great magazine "dedicated to the Goddess in every woman". (this page has some covers and descriptions, but you'll have to buy the magazine or order hard copy back issues) Various writers talk about pagan beliefs from many different cultures, there are articles about ritual, about various stages in life, healing practice and lots of great advertisements. It's very rich and inspiring.

This one is a Canadian site that also connects with wiccan radio broadcasts.

Some excellent books :
THE SPIRAL DANCE by Starhawk (she is a leading figure in neo-paganism in North America). It has some history and lots of rituals and prayers.

DRAWING DOWN THE MOON by Margot Adler is a history and description of pagan rebirth in Europe and North America, as well a s info about customs. There are lots of web sites and contacts in the index at the back

Please feel free to PM me any time.

Blessed be.
