NO NO NO!!! I DON'T WANT SWABBY TO LEAVE ... sobsob... choke ... gasp! PLEEZE come back!

I agree with Swabby ... but I gave up getting into fights about it for the sake of my health. I just live as close to my ideal as I can, and if anyone asks me why I explain. In the end it's all I can do. So I agree with Neenime too.

I am just off to a talk on the Karakoram mountains, to where (whence?) I have never been, but am wearing my "maountainearings" ... a silver sling and chockstone in one ear and a descendeur in the other, held up by tiny silver carabiners.

Oh please, Swabby ... don't go ... hiccup ... sniff!

Well I never intended it to turn sour. My apologies.

Seems though that swabby was going anyway. I just seemed to have pushed him over the edge.

Better get back to my cave, I guess.

Hugs to everyone. I fly back now and then.

Swabby, please dont go. I am a guilty one of keeping quiet not to stir the waters. But to put it out bluntly, I for one feel very strongly about global warming and I do feel that we have played a major part. In fact I think it is spiraling out of control and some wont see it until its too late. It saddens me, but its just like my christianity.I will never deny my faith, and will mention it if I get the chance, but I am always cautious not to push it as the last thing I want is to turn somebody away from it. Like this, I will state my feelings about it, but not at a time when I feel it may be taken as an insult to anyone or as a 'I know better than you' type thing. My friendship with you all means that sometimes I keep quiet for a while to see where things lead. I dont agree with all that is said, but I value you all and respect your opinions. Swabby, I am not saying you are wrong though because I know how passionate you are about this all. I hold you in utmost admiration for strength that I lack.
I dont want any of you to leave.... I feel like we are losing a family member...
Maybe it was wrong of me to hold my opinion. After all we have happily agreed to disagree before. Maybe I just worry that I may lose some good friends if what I say is taken wrong...
Where am I going here? I am not good about putting my thoughts into words...
I will miss you Swabby. I really value your opinion.

I think most of us express an opinion when we think it's appropriate (and we have time) ... but we stand back when things become too passionate, because we've read the topped thread on Controversial Issues and realise there has to be a borderline somewhere. That means that we each get to let it all hang out occasionally without starting a flame-war.

No flame throwers in my department, no offense taken, and I'm not going anywhere. I truly enjoy respectful conversations, even if we disagree. I, for one, truly value everyone's opinions no matter how different from my own. I'm sure not one to think that I hold all the answers by any stretch of the imagination. Except that THE KING is the finest thing since sliced bread. IMHO. *giggle*

All of the teachers went to the Media Center today and put Valentine heart bookmarks on our favorite books. Guess which one I chose?? LOL I'll bet you'd get it in three. I complained that I had but only one bookmark to give, and that it was like choosing a favorite child. The librarian was not to be swayed, and I had to make a choice. Return of the King it is! Our principal was in the center at the time and was surprised at how quickly I made my choice. I told her it was a no-brainer. I've been reading Tolkien for over 30 years now, and it has a favorite spot in my heart. Which led me to think, which is your favorite work of Tolkien? Yeah, yeah, I know. It's like choosing your favorite child...but which one do you hold most dear? I think that RotK is truly my favorite because it includes the Appendices. I so like the story of Aragorn and She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I'm a romantic at heart.

Rose don't you dare blame yourself not you Callë ! We all take strong but respectful stances here quite regularly. Occasionally, someone has a real sore spot and reacts more strongly than we might anticipate. And sometimes there are other pressure points in a person's life and they react very strongly to something that would otherwise be tolerated better.

Swabby is an adult and responsible for his own behaviour. NO one here stepped on his toes (unless it was in a PM that none of us saw).

I will miss him dearly if he goes, but that would be his decision alone.

Hmm - is this kerfuffle like the big argument in the COuncil of Elrond scene in FOTR? Are we playing out the drama of our namesake? Wierd!

kerfuffle

I *love* that word!

My Scottish grandfather had several words that I always enjoyed. I wish I would have known him. Bumbershoot was one. That's an umbrella.

Hiya guys. Just quickly here as I must get ready for work. I was hoping to see Swabby back.
You are all right though, it has to be his decision.
I love that word too...kerfuffle...
It is snowing pretty good here and my son checked his website to see if school is cancelled. It is and it said 'closed due to inclement weather and illness within the staff...in other words, 'staff' infection.
Do have a good day mellyn, and Swabby, we do love you.

As for scientific statistics, the sad thing is that a case can be made for every point and scientists can bend the statistics to whatever they want them to be.

Brandy, as a scientist, I must say that now, I feel a bit offended; as if you were saying that, all scientists are unreliable or downright liars. (I'm sure you don't actually mean that, but that's how it comes through.) I know there's some strong anti-intellectualism in the US, and I wish nobody here agrees with it.

Last weekend, there was a very good article about the global warming in our newspaper; it was written by a university professor specialised in the issue. According to him, the warming IS real, and it is caused by BOTH natural AND man-made reasons. What he sees as the biggest danger for objective discussion is the hunt for sensation by the media, which leads to exaggeration and even crude mistakes in the popularized writings about the issue - that sort of stuff is easy to shoot down, and it only benefits the naysayers.

(BTW, global warming isn't any new issue - it was already talked about some 25 years ago, when I was attending the Basics of Environmental Science lectures at the university. It didn't just surface until now, when the signs have become clearer.)

Swabby, I'm really sorry if you have decided to leave this site completely. You will be missed, and we all hope that you'll come back some day.

Morwin, oh don't get me started on the media. When I was a little girl you could read a newspaper or a magazine and believe every word not so today. It drives me crazy. I have never heard about strong anti-intellectualism in the USA and of course I am not against anyone being intellectual. Heck, science was one of my favorite subjects in school.

I sent my grandson's present to the wrong address. So, the present he really wanted he did not get for his birthday. I could not believe I made that mistake. I contacted the people that live at my daughter's old address but they are not answering. Menopause I could blame for the forgetfulness but I just got in a hurry.

Scots, my favorite is FOTR and I guess for me it is because the characters are being introduced and ME is being brought to life for me.I know some of ME was described in The Hobbit but FOTR just brings it out for me. They are all together, fighting together, and I guess that is why it is my favorite. Bumbershoot I love that word and the kerfuffle. That was a sweet story about the the library. When my mother died my school library bought a book on gardening for children and donated it to the Library in honor of my mother. She loved to garden. She could get any plant to grow . I really miss her.

Calle staff infection lol. No snow here just cold temperatures. My little wild birds now wait for me in the morning. Because I have some birds that eat on the ground I throw out birdseed everyday. I just love seeing all the different birds eat

I am sorry to see swabby go as well, but he is very sensitive and has almost left more than once. Perhaps he will change his mind again. Lots of stuff going on in his life.

As for global warming, I agree with Morwinyoniel. It's not just a single factor, but a complex set of circumstances. Yes, we need to curb our greedy use of fossil fuels and find clean alternatives, but there is also a natural shift in climates that occurs.

As for statistics, it's not scientists alone who use them. I've taken stats in my nursing program and seen that it takes a lot of work to really get accurate information. Yes, you can manipulate numbers to pretty much say what you want, but anyone who is ethical won't do that. It's less likely to be the scientists than the politicians who want whatever to be proved. There are faulty studies (not necessarily done on purpose) that are quoted just because they are done in the scientific community. But even the scientific community doesn't agree with everything put out there!

And yes, the media just adores getting things riled up. Sensationalism abounds. Oy...

Now, back to Tolkien. I have to agree that picking a single book is nearly impossible. Each one I have read has its own merits. A lot of folks have trouble with the Silmarillion because it's not a single novel, but a composite of writings on the evolution of Tolkien's universe and Elves. One can't sit down and read it like a novel, but consider it like a resource book. I have papers stuck in it everywhere with notes (i.e. important battle, genology of Elrond, role of Men prior to Last Alliance, etc.).

calle... Cute. Staff infection. Hehehehehe... Yeah, the flu has gotten a lot of people, even those immunized. Had it last week myself and am still a bit under the weather. Best to stay home when ill and not spread the wealth.

It's dry, dry, and dry here in San Diego. The weather's warmed up a bit, but we need RAIN! I fear for this summer and the fire season. It's like tinder right now.

Morwin I quite agree about the anti-intellectualism. You can hear it in conversation as people make fun of PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) and the homegrown expert's view that "no fancy-pants university professor that knows nothing about real life is gonna tell me about XYZ". It's unfortunate but it does exist in some pockets. I think it's part of the US culture because of indepedence having been wrestled away from the monarchy and the strict rules of a very hierarchical society in Britain in that age of their history. There is some distrust of authority and )perceived) privilege.

I also think people are mixing up popular media with professional journals in their comments. The former sometimes use lies, sensationalizing and manipulation. Professional journals have clear standards of credibility and scientists keep each other in line. They challenge reseacrh try to replicate it and call each other to account for results. That's not to say that dishonesty and skewing don't take place, but there is a respect for professional and ethical obligations, for the most part.

P.S. kerfuffle and Bumbershoot (or is it bumbershute? are great words! I knew a British nurse who also called it a brolley, perhaps short for umbrella?

Thanks for the snow warning, Calle! I filled all my extra coal buckets and brought them indoors before nightfall. It was white-over and snowing when I woke and carried on all morning. Powdery stuff blowing off the roofs in clouds and swirling about in the street. More forecast for tonight with hard frost.

No walk today, but did my tai chi. You can do it with swords … but not in here. The ceiling is under 7ft. A pair of Legolas knives would be fun.

Neenime. Your husband’s pictures are wonderful. I loved the fox

Thanks, Cirdaneth . I am glad you liked the photos. Yes that fox is quite striking. You'd almost think it was posing for the picture.

Well, break out the bikinis! It was a BALMY -21 C ( -5F) today. Compared to -30 the other day, it was a veritable heat wave. And how very ironic that week's worth of this weather has been accompanied by all the media info on global warming. Just strange! Neenime shakes her head - *rattle, rattle*

I sure didn't mean to upset any applecarts but I guess I did. Morwin I certainly didn't mean to imply that scientists are dumb. What I was trying to say was best put by Belle Bayard in the second paragraph of her most recent post. I don't believe that global warming is ALL our fault, I didn't mean to imply that we are not without fault. I really do believe that humans have had an impact on the Earth that we all love so dearly. What I wanted to get across is that there is IMHO a lot of bias in the way it's reported to the average Joe. If I could afford it, I would drive a battery powered car and spend my days walking around picking up trash along the roadside (yes, it bugs me that much) but I am not well enough off to buy a Hybrid or quit my job. So in the meantime I will do the best I can and reduce, reuse, recycle and encourage others to do the same. I hope this clarifies my ideas and clears up any misunderstanding I might have left here.

If I upset anyone I am truly sorry and thank you all for allowing each other to have and express an opinion.

Ah! Well! That said, I am glad to see that everyone (sans Swabby) is here and doing okay even though they are freezing (-5F) and getting lots of snow (6 inches). I hope that you have more pleasant weather soon. Idaho is doing very well and we are enjoying warmer days. I've even heard the birds singing in the bushes and trees outside my window. Now that's a sound you can live with.

I have a new joy in my life these days. I got a Loreena McKennitt CD, as advised by Scots, and I love it. Many of the songs bring the woodlands of Tolkein to mind. I can picture being an elf and walking through those woods withthat music playing in my mind. Some of it is so forlorn it really makes me think of the elves departure.

Well I am just glad that J.R.R. TOlkein wrote his works so that we could enjoy his singular ability to capture his stories visually.

Scots Pick a favorite? My LoTR books are in a binding with all three of them so I would have to put my stamp on the lot of it at once. I could never pick a favorite.

I'm off for now.
Have a good evening/day everyone!

Seems I missed your link to the photos that cirdaneth mentioned, neenime. I have enjoyed looking at yours and your hubby's work. And a fox!! Oooh, I love foxes, can't eat a whole one though.

Well the threatened snow didn't hit Manchester, but I believe that the Midlands did get it, calle. I think you mentioned that in your post, didn't you. Has it cleared up some. According the the papers on Tuesday 'Britain was bracing itself for snow storms, etc.* We do create over here, Lol!!! Ooops, better zip my mouth.

I was studying my collection of LotR DVDs last night. I haven't glanced at them in an age, nor *guilty look* read the books. Mind you I have a good excuse, I can't watch or read due to the tears. Lol!

Does anyone have a very favourite part, both book and/or film, or one signigicant moment where tears flow.

I really can't pick, although Sam carrying Frodo just about breaks my heart.

I've just been doing some chair exercises at work. Stretching my legs out off the floor, holding them and rotating my ankles. Some arm stretches too, catching hold of my right elbow with my left hand over my head and pulling gently, then repeating the other side. I could hear some cracks. *giggles*

Keep well everyone.

Hugs

Awelyn and Rose the photos are on page 6 of the "critters" ( North American slang for creatures, I suppose) section. Here is the link.. Enjoy.

Good for you, Rose for doing exercises. Our manager got us a DVD of office yoga that I have tried once or twice. It's quite eacy and does not require changing into exercise outfits or breaking out the mats. All are simple poses and breathing to stretch out tension.

Weather has really been a pain lately. A lot of places are getting extremes that wreak havoc on people's lives and surroundings. I hope you all stay safe and warm.

Tolkien favourites? I haven't read the trilogy for over a year now, but the evenings of story and song in Rivendell have always seemed magical to me. In The Sil, the story of creation through music will always touch a special place in my heart.

Brandy I am so pleased that you enjoy Loreena McKennitt's music. Which album did you buy?

Neenime all the photos at that link were so beautiful but the photo of the fox was breathtaking. Your husband just captured the beauty of nature . He is so talented.

Rose we do not have any snow in my area either. One of my favorite parts is in the ROTK film when Frodo is captured and the orc is about ready to finish him off and Sam to the rescue, The look on Frodo's face the hope shining forth where just seconds before was nothing but hopelessness. Another is the house of healing on the extended version when Faramir and Eowyn realize their feelings for each other and when Sam and Frodo are laying on the piece of rock with molten lava all around and Sam talks about if he would have married he would have chosen Rosie for his bride and he is crying and then Frodo says I am glad to have you here with me Sam at the end of all things. I just cry my heart out. I could go on but it would become a novel so I will continue on another post later on this subject.

MTMS, I respect and care deeply for you too. How is Mardi Gras? Have you lost your voice from screaming?

Brandy I have heard so much about that artist I am just going to have to get that CD. It was cold and will remain that way for a long time the weather people say but I know Spring is just around the corner and I am looking forward to that so much.

I received a B-day invitation from my granddaughter yesterday in the mail and just sobbed. I could not go because they live so far away and I can only afford the plane ticket once a year. Her mom said I know you can't come but I thought you would like the card and my granddaughter had drawn a picture for me. It was sweet but sad.

Have a great Friday I have to get ready for work.

Well, it's still snowing here, Rose, just down the road from you. It snowed half of yesterday and all of today so far. Very fine stuff so it's not building much. It is freezing however, and we also have thick mist. Visibility about 50 yards now, but was only about ten feet this morning with billowing powder snow.

Think I'll go and have a "mint madness" hot-choc. More later.

*stunned* neenime....*stunned*. You are so lucky to live in such wonderful surroundings. The picture of the fox leaves me speechless. Your hubby is a wonderful photographer, as are you, dear.

Ah, yes, Rivendell.... who wouldn't love to be caught in the fireglow in the Hall of Fire, a glass of miruvor, a handsome *cough* Elf, sitting listening to Elven song and stories. *deep sigh*

Now, the Sil is a totally different kettle of fish for me. I have it on my MP3 player read by Martin Shaw, but I really find it difficult to get into. Maybe it's a little too like a history book and *whispers* I wasn't very good at history at school. Read plenty of historical novels though when I left school. Just couldn't follow the bran-dry history books.

Yes, exercise is good for you. Sitting down all day, and then most of the evening, the old legs and joints do get a bit stiff. I have a walk at lunchtime, unless it's too wet or cold, and I walk a good deal at weekend, but through the week, I like to wiggle my ankles and stretch my arms. Other than around my significant other of course.

I really must check out this Loreena McKennitt. I have seen her name around the site in various signatures and posts. My favourite singer at present is Sarah McLaughlin and in particular 'Full of Grace'. Wonderful.

Awelyn. That must have been lovely to receive the B-day invite, but don't be sad that you can't go. You can be there in spirit.

I agree with your choice of parts of LotR. Mind you, with my love of Sam...anything with him in has my vote, both movie and book.

Better bounce, friends.

Hugs

Neenime and Awelyn The CD I bought is The Book of Secrets and it is absolutlely marvy.
PBS used to air Anne of Green Gables and I loved the episode where Anne recites the peom The Highwayman. That poem, set to music, is on that CD. I never knew all of it and now that I do I think that it must be one of the best poems ever. I love good poetry, especially the kind that is more like prose and tells a story.

My heart goes out to those of you with bad weather. I am sure our present lovely weather will not continue but I really hate it when it's cold. Cold makes me...well...cold.

Neenime has your husband ever thought of putting together a wildlife calendar. It would surely be very beautiful.

We have today off of school because of the number of sick students. They decided to quit fighting the absences and let the kids stay home and get well. That means I can get my housework and laundry done a day earlier. Anybody have any laundry they need folded? I love to fold freshly laundered clothing.

Well have a good Friday.

Rose, no snow yet?? we actually left work early as the roads are getting impassable and they have shut down some bus routes. It really started coming down heavy just a few hours ago. There is more coming to the midlands through the night so I am so thankful its Saturday tomorrow.
Awelyn, I have to agree with you. There are so many parts of ROTK I cry through that I give up trying not to and just let the tears flow. The bit of Eldarion makes me cry, and Sam carrying Frodo, and Pippin talking to Gandalf about death, and Theodens death and Pippins face when he sings his song....and so many other parts, but the biggest heart breaker is when they are on that rock and Sam talks about the shire
I am still trying to read throught he history of ME and have more books I have yet to read, but I have to say my favourite is FOTR. The innocence of the hobbits and the shire before it all began, the beauty of Rivendell, and Lothlorien, getting to know the characters at the start of the fellowship...
Ahh! My dinner is ready...got to go, will have to finish later

Hi

The bit where Sam is giving his 'worth fighting for' speech has had me blubbing more than once and I do always feel sorry for Gollum because he could have redeemed himself and there were points in the film and book where he almost made it. The end of the film tends to make me cry as well - and I find Pippin singing whilst Faramir rides out very moving. In the book as well as the film I was always sad about Boromir.

We had a light dusting of snow in Edinburgh on Thursday morning but it was gone by the evening. It has been cold but it shouldn't be unexpected - I can remember it snowing here in April more than once.

Here is another life lesson for Scot's wall chart

"If you are an elf who's name begins with H and Elrond asks you to go to Helms Deep - DON'T DO IT!

Lol!! HT. Good one.

No, calle, no snow yet, although it really has tried. Rain today and very cold.

Enjoy your dinner. And hope the snow doesn't get any worse.

Oh, I love The Highwayman, brandy. It was one of my favourite poems at school. So romantic. Brave girl and what a sacrifice.

Off to make a cuppa.

One of my heart-stop moments from the films is Arwen's

"Whether by your will or no, there is no ship now that could bear me hence,"

... and Elrond gets it into his head at last that her love is so great that grief will kill her before she reaches the coast. The look of shock and shame on his face tears me up.

Brandy it has been a long time since I read that poem I will have to go back and read it again.

No snow here but New York state is getting it in feet not inches but it is cold.

Rose, when I was a girl I use to read Harlequin romances  especially the ones about English nurses and they would take a break for a cuppa. I learned many British words and phrases from those books.

Oh cirdaneth I agree that is heart rending.

HT that is a good one. Sam and Frodo the worth fighting for makes me cry. In Sean Astin's book after he received his lines they were always doing re- writes he calls his dad John Astin and reads that speech to him and his dad says Wow,that's great,Sean and you can do it. He said his dad is a harsh critic and to get his praise was just awesome.

Hope you had a good dinner Calle. Stay inside and get warm and cozy. I think a fireplace ,a good book and a hot drink would be just the thing for you.

Neenime I agree with Brandy a wildlife calendar would be grand. I would buy one. My husband would love it.

Hi to all that are not here . Keep warm and have a great day/night.

Hi y'all. It's been a loooooooooong time since I've posted in here. I back peddaled to the previous page and I am sorry to see that some of the problems I've seen blossom on other sites that have been running for many years seem to have developed here. These things happen regularly in biological families as well and I hope things will smooth over soon.

As for most emotional movie scene, I'd have to say when Frodo sets sail for the West. Still makes me cry even though I'm one of the ones who does not entirely "approve" of some of the alterations the movies made in the story.

 Ok I am going to give this a try. I am brand new to the forums but have haunted this site for the last two years. I found it to be one of the best online resources on the web. I am a long time Tolkien fan that gets totally lost in the books, fan fic, and movies. LOL I know sad...

I'm 42, have 3 kids ( 4 if you count my hubby) and an avid pc gamer. I love the world of Tolkien and just finished watching all 3 of my extended versions. Still reading all the books over again. Waiting patiently for The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar mmorpg game.

The most tearful parts in the movies for me were when Aragorn tried to give Arwen her Evenstar back, and the look on his face when he realised she was behind the banner at his crowning. Sam carring Frodo had to be the worst I cry every time I see it.

Welcome to CoE.. It is good to have you onboard with us...I think that this is one of the best sites anywhere around...
I have only been a Tolkien fan for about four years...but I love it! I saw the movies first...then had to go get the books....lol
There are many tear-jerkers in the movies for me...too many to name offhand...

Hi Randi ,how are things in Texas? You have a good night. I think this is a great site too.

Hello,Virtuelle  Nice to always see new faces. We all love Tolkien here so welcome.I am 54 and the mother of three and have a husband that is a avid PC gamer. He started out with Zelda,He is really into the Sims right now. He tried to talk me into playing that game but I said I have already been through that with my kids. So, no thank you.

Hello Celebrian nice to see you back. You are right it does happen sometimes, the problems but we respect each other and hold Tolkien in highest esteem. After all that is why we are here because of that love we have. I think things will work out though.

 Greetings, Virtuelle!

I'm on my way to 51, have one son who proudly serves our country, and a spousal unit of nigh-on 28 years. I warp...I mean teach...middle schoolers in my off-Tolkien times. I've been involved with The Professor since 1976 when my then-boyfriend introduced me to him. That's the one thing out of that particular relationship that is worth looking back on.

My most "gotcha" moment...hmmmm I think it's when Frodo leaves his beloved Sam at the Gray Havens. Now, I know that it's only temporary, and that Sam sails into the West after Rosie dies, but I always hope in my heart that Frodo is waiting there on the shores for him as he comes into Valinor.

It's cold here on the PoG today. We had a skiff of snow last night which only amounted to maybe half an inch. Just enough to make the roads a bit dicey on my way to school. I intend to snuggle up with the hubby and keep myself warm tonight. Maybe I'll even sleep in tomorrow. I wish I could. Darned these circadian rhythms anyway!

*Scots skips off to check other things on the Internet* Have a good Friday night, all.

Take good care.
