You're so lucky that you can bring up LoTR in class!

Heh... I guess I am. I only wish that we could read The Hobbit for English class... then school would be truly perfect.

Reading LotR would be perfect too. I wish more people would see how amazing it is. *sigh*

STAGING DIRECTIONS

Fan: I think we should read Lord of the Rings for English class!

[A flighty-looking, shallow girl speaks first.]

P1: You mean that movie with the hot elf in it?

[A glasses-wearing nerd is the next to reply.]

P2: No, I think he means that book about the kids in the wilderness. Isn't that Lord of the Flies?

Fan: No, I mean Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

[Everyone begins babbling loudly]

P3: It's too long!

P4: It's too boring!

P5: It's too old!

[Fan exits, crying uncontrollably.]

... that's pretty much how it would go.

I would read it in class. Sadly, my classmates don't GET it, and think it's all boring and long. They don't have very long attention spans.

At my school a lot of people say the movies were ok, but they wouldn't even dream of reading the books (too long, too slow, too pointless) I have one friend who makes fun of me for it. Suffering for the worthy cause...lol.

most of my friends have heard at one time or another that i like LOTR, but prolly dont remember cuz i dont talk about it. nor would they know i'm crazy over it b/c i never talk about it. *shrugs* if they dont want to hear it thats fine. There's certain things i dont want to hear from them either!

most people are very surprised to learn i'm really into it if they figure it out.

i've never been made fun of.

My teacher discovered my beat up old copy of FoTR and thought it was the first time I was reading it. He was amazed to learn that it was one of the first "real" books I had ever read!

Lol. I used to, before I started middle school and now I have tons of homework. During the summer I read a lot, though.

Cool, Haldir, FotR is a good first "real" book to read.

I think my one teacher is trying to get me to read stuff other than LoTR, because she has given me, and only me, about 25 OTHER books to read. She then wants to know how I liked them. During standardized testing:cry:, she asked why I was reading FoTR and not one of the books she gave me!

In my AP class we often refer back to LotR. =P
Our teacher is just like "Oh, you pick such good works to find the intertexuality!!"

I read tons, and tons, but none of it's really what I want to read. It's al lfor school; I wil lsay that I love Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. XD It's so entertaining.

The English teacher that teaches ninth grade english honors class has The Two Towers. I asked her why she had one book and not all three and if one of the other teachers had the other two books. She said no, they just bought her the second. My response was...-_-.

I wonder what exactly that would do for the students, to read the middle book but not the first or the last one??

My fourth-grade teacher wanted me to read "the classics" because she knew I like reading. So she gave me Pollyanna and it literally took me the entire year to get through because I thought it was so boring. Lol.

I love to read, but I read really slowly
also, I don't tend to have a lot of time to read, unfortunately
although these past weekends have had a lot of driving to them, with college visits and such, so time to read... after homework

Yep. And the characters are realistic, not always inhumanly cheerful.

My mom and sister get sick if they read in the car. I feel really bad for them, because that's mostly where I actually have time to read.

Do you know what college you're going to, ezett? I'm trying to figure out highschool and that is exhausting. I can't imagine what deciding college will be like. :dizzy:

I get sick in the car if I'm read...actually, even if I'm not...=P lol

I wish I could read in the car, it'd make trips so much more bearable with family to places, particularly long distances. Like to the beach, for example. That'd be waaaay more bearable. XD

That's a bummer.
Whenever we go on car trips we get books-on-tape so we can all listen to them and not worry about anyone getting sick.

Silly Songs with Larry....hahaha
You don't know how many fond childhood memories that brings up!! Haha
Even though i HATED Lord of the Beans...I considered it pure mockery. The "bean" in that movie, supposed to be the Ring, was supposed to be considered a "gift" if you used it in the right way. But the Ring was never considered a "gift" in LOTR. Wasn't that Denethor's way of thinking? So not only was that a mockery...it wasn't accurate, either

that was the point, Chef. The bean was a gift. It wasn't LOTR, ya know. It was LOTB.
THis was a kid's movie, and they didnt want it to be too scary, so they just changed it up. You could say it was based off LOTR. Just like Sheerluck Holmes is loosely based off Sherlock, or Minnesota Cuke of INdiana Jones.

Do you know what college you're going to, ezett? I'm trying to figure out highschool and that is exhausting. I can't imagine what deciding college will be like. :dizzy:

Well... i have 6 to decide from right now
Augustana (in Sioux Falls, SD)
Crieghton (in Omaha, NB)
North Dakota State University (in Fargo)
University of MN: Twin Cities
Marquette (in Milwaukee, WI)
and... Milwaukee School of Engineering

now i just have to decide which one, maybe knowing what schorships they're offering will help
Augustana is on the top of my list right now

I used to get sick reading in the car, but I don't anymore, for which I am grateful

Mmmm...I don't know any of those except the U of M...so good luck, whichever one you choose.

I've probably said this before... but I love Lord of the Beans!! I loved it even before I loved LotR. And the lesson they were trying to teach in it was "using your gifts"...I guess they couldn't do that very well unless they made the bean a gift. But I can understand why some people think it's mockery...though if you think about it so are the VSDs and a bunch of other LotR parodies...

OK OK it was kinda funny, I just didnt like it that much...

I guess it would also be an easy way for a wider audience to come to appreciate the real LOTR...you know, after they see the cartoon, they wanna see the real thing which is always cool
