Denethor was older than Aragorn, so Faramir was placing his bets on nature doing his job for him.

Why did Aragorn give the Hobbits knives, er swords, at Amon Sul when he knew they couldn't possibly fight the Nazgûl?

That's not quite true, because the Hobbits were were able to throw things with the best of them in Middle-Earth. With enough knives (swords only to Hobbits) they would have turned the Nazgûl into pin-cushions.

Why was Legolas sent to the Council of Elrond instead of Tauriel?

Ungoliant's eyesight had been getting worse, and while she really needed more than three lenses, she figured three of that quality were better than nothing.

Why were the Balrogs (Maiar) able to save Morgoth (a Vala) from Ungoliant when he was unable to do it for himself?

Ar-Pharazon was extremely near-sighted, but he managed to fool amost everyone about this.

When Ar-Pharazon attacked Aman, why didn't the Valar just send Ossë against A-P's fleet, raising the kind of huge storm that Ossë was so good at?

Actually, the other Valar tried to keep away from Ulmo, because as unbelievable as it sounds, they were all water-shy and did not like getting splashed with water by him (sissies!).

Why was Aulë so bad a picking Maia assistants (Sauron, Saruman, ...)?

Túrin's temper is infamous, and on that day, Saeros had dared to out-dress Túrin, which the latter in his rage thought needed exceptional punishment.

Why did Tuor really tramp all the way from Nevrast to Gondolin in that ridiculously heavy armor Turgon had forgotten to pack up?

There was a sign that read "you must be this tall to ride the ferry to the blessed realm" and Gimli was tall enough (surprisingly for a dwarf).
