Leggy talked him into it by pointing out that being old and living in a cave just didn't compare to living in a beautiful house in Valinor where the climate is warm all year, and the ale is well brewed. It was the last point that finally convinced him to make the trip.

Why did Gandalf decide to confront the Nazgûl in front of the gates of Minas Tirith, rather than attack him from a place of safety?

Because in the places of safety, there were doughnuts, and gandalf would have eaten too much.

Because Thranduil knew that Legolas was much too much of a thrill junkie to be able to stay home and be a daddy (and he had some doubts about Tauriel, too - meaning he would have to take care of his grandchildren - another unlikely thing).

Why did the Hobbits of Hobbiton believe that Bilbo was dead after he had been away from home barely more than one year?

Having some measure of foresight, he knew that Thranduil would give those brats their due treatment.

Why did the Master of Laketown decide to treat Thorin and Company like royalty even though he did not believe in the "fairy tales" about a supposed dragon in Erebor?

He was a total snob and figured that having Thorin, King of Durin's Folk, as an acquaintance would go along way to improving his standing when it came to dealing with the Elven King. As for the rest of the Company, he wasn't so bothered. They basically just came in the Thorin 'package".

Because he was actually in disguise as an albino Dwarf the had been living in the Dead Marshes for years in order to fool Saruman. Alas, the disguise failed and he came under his spell via Gríma, Saruman's minion in Edoras.

How was Gandalf able to bring Théoden King back from the spell he was under?

While pretending to be captured by Saruman in Orthanc, Gandalf had actually been unearthing all of Saruman's secrets, so that was a piece of cake!

Why was Éowyn able to destroy the leader of the Nazgul (formerly known as the Witch-King)?

Because she got an A back in elementary school in her "Introduction to Nazgul Destruction" class. It was a very useful class so it is a shame it isn't taught anymore.

Actually, the Men who arrived in the area called it Mt. Boom due to its volcanic activity but the Elves, with whom they came into contact, didn't speak their language very well and thought they said "Doom" instead of "Boom".

How did Lurtz miss pinning Aragorn with the shield when he was practically standing on top of him?

Why weren't Merry and Pippin given bows and arrows by Théoden and Denethor, respectively, since Hobbits are better archers than "swordsmen" by orders of magnitude???
