Now for some Friday silliness

Nice skirt there, Billy....those support panty hose and Easy Spirit oxfords have got me thinking...what does a Ranger wear as footwear with his kilt? Does he wear socks? What's the traditional Scottish legwear? All I can picture are Argyle socks...

another tangent...do you suppose those socks that are "lost" in the dryer are eaten by sock-eating orcs?

(THESE ARE IMPORTANT PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS)

LOST...hhhhmmmmm, it's getting weirder.

I saw a preview for some new TV show staring Stuart Townsend. Wasn't he the one PJ originally cast as Aragorn? The guy looks like he is maybe 25 today...what was PJ thinking? Toddler Aragorn? I like my Rangers a bit long in the tooth.

Heritavaril, LOL at your poem.

Have a wonderful autumn weekend!

Sock eating Orcs, SE, Lol!! They should join my club.

These aren't my words, but from a song I remember from my youth, sung by Andy Stewart in the White Heather Club, a very popular programme at the time.

Let the wind blow high
Let the wind blow low
As through the streets of the town I go
All the lassies shout Hello
Viggo where's your troosers.

The song was actually referring to a 'Donald' from the Isle of Skye, but I thought it fitted.

Toddler Aragorn? I like my Rangers a bit long in the tooth.

SE

And a few other places..............(like hair, eyelashes, etc.)

You folks had me ROFL! Between the kilt pic, Old Tom, the poem HT and the Friday sillliness SE, my sides and cheeks are aching from laughter. It's been a heck of a week and it feels sooo good to laugh. Thank you all!!

I was disappointed that I didn't get to see A History Of Violence tonight. Missed a date with the V-man. I'll try to clear out a spot for him tomorrow. It's been too long since I've seen that face and heard that voice on the big screen.

Here's my contribution to the collection of silly poems. Actually, it's a modification of a nursery rhyme. The origional had something to do with a girl named Mary and a lamb.

Strider had a big, ole sword.
Oh, my Lord!
I am floored!
Guess I'll just go overboard
if he puts on a kilt!!

I guess the silliness is contagious.

Old Tom I did think the picture was funny but Billy looked very Jaunty in his Kilt. Swabby you are so gallant.
MTMS,Se and Rose and Ht you guys make me laugh. LOL.
Belle sometimes I think school uniforms are such a good idea just for that reason. They could express their freedom of dress or undress in some cases at home.
Hi Balrog and Neenime.

Hi everyone,

Swabby, thank you for your most effusive praise and thanks to the others who have given it a metnion. Re Billy in the kilt and socks - I think both the kilt and socks were just a little too long I like to see a bit of knee in between. I am not sure about what socks you should wear but at one time part of the traditional dress was to have a dagger thrust into the garter. These days however the police aren't too happy about men going around with weapons in their socks. OOps just realised that this will take the post over the 600 mark again but it doesn't seem to be locked yet. Hope this gets to the new thread.

Love to all

Hi everyone.

Love the poems. Hats off the the people who can write them. I'm just getting used to writing stories in the forums.

I would like to comment on OLD TOM'S pic of Billy. I have a Scotish heritage and I am proud to call him a Scotlander(?). I envy men who can wear a kilt. (Wonder what Viggo looks like in one?) It does take a man to wear a kilt. Especially if he has the knees for it. :naughty: My hat's off to Billy. Doesn't he look sexy? Wonder what he wears underneath?

Weather here is getting cooler. Not kilt weather. Too breezy. The leaves are disappearing off the trees. We finally are getting the frost.

Sometimes I think I have an orc in my room. Everytime I go to wash clothes, I seem to have a sock missing. Right now I have an even number of socks. Those ORCS!

Well, I better go to bed and dream nice thoughts. The weekend is here and I have to work.

Have a great weekend. :rolling:

I got A bang out of ol' Tom's story about the
"buck-toothed hullis" and asked him if I could write about it, and he said I could. So here's A little something I made up. Do you know how hard it is to rhyme "Hullis"?

little Sammy Haggis had A run-in with A hullis
in the hallway of his home one stormy night
with his bladder overflowing, he went to pee unknowing
of the danger that was waiting out of sight
frighteners are just folly, he told himself so jolly
as he nervously tiptoed through the hall
the invisible buck-toothed hullis, said my brother Hollis,
has two big teeth you'll see just before you fall
so Sammy's pace was quick, it nearly made him sick
when two big teeth started to appear
but in the dark his dog barked
and made the hullis cry in fear
when the lights were flicked, Sammy saw the trick
and kicked his brother right on the ear

Have A good weekend, my friends. swabby

Greetings all
Been enjoying all your poems/rhymes - too many to mention individually. Keep 'em coming. Much better than my dear son, who hurried to log on to the computer yesterday when he got home, specially so he could type up a horrible rhyme about unmentionable body products. Yuck. Small boys.... I comfort myself with the thought that at least it was inventive use of language and correctly spelled. Do you think in a few years he'll graduate to really deep poetic imagery? LOL hey a mother can dream, can't she?

I loved the poems in LOTR, Hobbit and "Tom Bombadil" as a child and used to write quite a few of my own at the time. More recently I have written a couple of things for the RP in the Realm of Yavanna as my character is a journeyman Bard. I also have a very miserable creation in the Fanfic poetry section called "Snowdrops". I think I must have had a tough day! I should try and write more, and more cheerfully. I promise to share if the muse gets me.

Fun afternoon today. There was an event at work for school age children up to age 11. Mostly science or craft workshops. I ran an hour's music session, taking in and demo-ing some of my stranger Early music and folk instruments. Had 8 children (and a couple of grown-up helpers) and it was great fun. I hope I've inspired a couple of them to do a bit more music although their parents might resist when asked to find a Tibetan Long Trumpet for their little darlings.

Autumn is setting in here. My sumach bush has turned fiery red, and I'm beginning to wonder whether the last of the tomatoes in the greenhouse will ripen. I just love the smell when I open the greenhouse door and there's that mixture of damp autumn earth, tomato and grape vine scents.

Joining the keep-fit effort tomorrow at a local gym - core fitness training with a "Swiss Ball". Hmm. Well it's different!

Enjoy your weekends, wherever you are.

A quick note for MinasTirith: I saw A History of Violence today with the DH. I'm not sure what I thought of the movie...DH who likes such things as Quentin Tarentino thought it was very good and that Viggo should be nominated for an academy award for best actor. (High praise indeed for his rival! )

Thanks for the note, SE. I'm very curious to see it myself. The reviews look good, but I don't always agree with the critics.
I'd feel bad about myself if I skipped church to watch "my boyfriend" on screen. Perhaps I can carve some time out of the day to sneak off and spend some time with him...in a darkened theatre. (I am soo bad. Some one needs to pray for me!)
Viggo in a tux at the Academy awards might not be a bad thing to watch...maybe not as entertaining as a kilt. Hey...maybe we can start the petition now!

I loved the poem about the buck-toothed hullis, swabby. One fact I forgot to mention aboutthe hullis is that he is fully known as a giant buck-toothed hullis. But I guess that pretty much goes without saying if it's large enough to swallow a boy whole.

Anyway, the poem sounds very much like one of the nocturnal adventures I had as a boy. (I was very afraid of the dark.) I used to hollar for my older brother (the one who created, or "discovered", the hullis) to escort me to the restroom. I might as well have asked the man in the moon to escort me for all the good it did me.

Today was our Hobbit Potluck Picnic in San Francisco. Goldberry and I wore the new costumes she had made, and received a number of compliments. Hopefully somebody will post pictures on the website. I'll let you know when/if they do.

This year's pageant featured a talent contest of sorts. I sang a little and recited "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" from memory complete with characterizations of Tom, Goldberry, Old Man Willow, Badger Brock, and the Barrow-wight. I've worked for a year on that poem!

The potluck featured lots of great food and drink. I cooked a pork roast seasoned with garlic, salt, pepper, rosemary, and sage. I also prepared a dish with brussels sprouts, apple, and bacon. The food was yummy and in great supply: plenty to fill up the corners on.

The picnic also featured a Rohan-themed cooking contest as well as a trivia contest with questions from The Hobbit. As it so happened, Old Tom won the trivia contest! I'm not certain, but I believe I answered all of the questions correctly including the three bonus questions. :disco:

I can hardly wait until next year!

Hobbiton picnic - kewl! Wish we had something like that in my little city. I ma hard-pressed to ind fellow LOTR-fans. They're here, but we don't have a forum for meeting each other.

Hist of Violence Yes, looks great. would have one last night but we had rented DOWFALL (about Hitler's lasts days, from the memoires of his secretary) and wanted to watch it.

Really good -portrays a balanced picture of his human side as well as the "evil" side that Western society has emphasized. I think we love the concept that only certain people perpetrate evil and they are not like us. so we press our noses to the glass in the display case of history and conveniently forget that any one of us is capable of evil (to varying degrees) if the time and circumstancces are right . It was ordinary people (at the behest of arguably evil leadership) that perpetrated the massacres sof the Holocaust, the
denocide in Rwanda and Bosnia.

I appreciated the way that The Professor made his characters , as Milton said, "Sufficient to have stood, but free to fall."

Anyway, that's pretty heavy for a Sunday morning. It's going to be another glorious Autumn day here in the near-north regions of Canada. Fall is short here and the leaves will be stripped from the trees soon enough. It's off to help hubby with his amateur photography hobby. Some nice alone-time in Nature. Always good for the soul. Taking my Ranger-stick in case of bears,

Have a great day everyone. (Hi back Awelyn41

Old Tom, the Hobbit picnic sounded like such fun. Your description of the roast made my mouth water The buck -toothed Hullis sounds scarier than my boogie man. Congrats on winning trivia.

Swabby I enjoyed the poem.
Neenime, when I went to college we talked about that same thing in my literature class that each of us have a good and bad side and depending on circumstances we might do the unexpected. So, I guess in that instance we are all like Gollum.
I wish we had LOTR things in my town.I guess the books and movies will have to do until I can afford to go to something.
Well, I am off to church and it looks like it will be a glorious Autumn day. This is my favorite time of the year. I named my youngest daughter Autumn who will be 23 in 3 days because of my love of the season

swabby's easy and healthy chicken and rice. This is A family favorite that I've made for years.

about one half pound chicken breast meat(in bite-sized chunks)
one stalk celery(chopped)
one half medium onion(chopped)
choose only one(two at most) of the items below
one half cup chopped or baby carrots(optional)
one half cup chopped broccoli (optional)
one half cup chopped mushrooms(optional)
one can of cream of chicken soup(may use lowfat kind)
one cup cooked plain white rice (for extra flavor, use chicken broth instead of water)
sautee chicken chunks in A little olive oil, add all ingredients except for soup and rice. Cover, cook over medium heat untill all ingredients are done, then add cream of chicken soup straight from can. When this mixture has heated A little, add cooked rice. Salt and pepper to taste. I like it with A little french bread. It's quick and easy, and good. swabby

Congratulations, Old Tom! Was anyone surprised that our Tom won?

I am curious about that brussel sprout and apple dish. Could you elaborate? My DH loves brussel sprouts and I believe they are orc food.

Now, where was I? Oh yes, laundry or grading essays...laundry or grading essays...what a dilemma! Maybe a nap with clear my head!

Hi All! I haven't posted in a bit. I seem to be meeting myself coming and going. Such is my lot in life!

As for me...Scorpio is my sign. I was born Oct. 30th. Makes me almost a spook. 'Splains a lot.

The spousal unit and I were on the roof today doing home maintainance. Heights + Me = BAD! But the job had to be done and the spousal unit couldn't do it all alone. So I got over myself and did what had to be done. Is looking mighty fine though I must say.

My dear companion laptop is taking a respite at the computer repair shop. I took it in to see if they could tell me how to burn CDs on it. I figured that I was just technology-impaired there. Guess not! They took my baby away from me! When the Geek asked me if he could take it for about a week, I told him he might as well ask to take my right arm for a week as well. *sigh* So I am stuck with the old desktop. Oh, well! Life does go on. It's amazing what we feel we can't life without that we lived without very well not 5 or 6 years ago.

I wish autumn would come to Nebraska! It was 85 here today and very windy. Pretty much like all summer. I wish we could give the A/C a break. We'll probably go right from summer into winter skipping fall all together.

Here's wishing you all a very fine week.

Happy birthday, BB!

Congratulations, Old Tom! Was anyone surprised that our Tom won?
Yes...me!

I am curious about that brussel sprout and apple dish. Could you elaborate? My DH loves brussel sprouts and I believe they are orc food.
Orc food? Really? Well I assure you, my recipe has neither moldy bread nor goblin innards in it.

This is it from memory...

1 1/2 pounds brussels sprouts
1 granny smith apple
2-to-4 slices of bacon (I recommend thickly sliced.)
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
Salt & Pepper to taste

Trim the end off the brussels sprouts then cut them in half. Some of the dark green outer leaves will naturally fall off. If they don't fall off you may remove them. (Some willl come off when you boil them.) Boil the brussels sprouts for 6 minutes.

After you set the water to boil fry the bacon in the olive oil.
(You can either cut the bacon into small bits before you fry them or after.) When the bacon is done set it on some paper towel to soak up the excess oil.

Core and slice the apple into thin slices. Fry them at medium heat for a few minutes in the bacon grease after the bacon is done. Add the boiled brussels sprouts and cook them at medium high for a few minutes.

When the brussels sprouts and apples are done place them in a glass dish, add the bacon, the apple cider vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. Serve the dish hot!

The healthy way to eat brussels sprouts is to steam them for 10 to 12 minutes. (More or less depending on how large they are and how firm you like them. I prefer to get the smaller sprouts. Also, I don't care for them if they're too firm.) I like to season them with some lemon pepper and a little bit of lemon juice. I eat asparagus the same way.l

Happy Birthday Belle, a bit belated! I was away from home for the weekend, so I couldn't come here to celebrate the actual date.

Congratulations for winning the trivia, Old Tom! That potluck party must have been great! And, Billy in a kilt - well, he's got the body for it. Although his socks and shoes weren't quite the right kind...

I've been reading your poetry laughing out loud. That's just the kind of thing one needs after a stressful Monday at work. And, all the recipes here make me hungry...

Happy Birthday to thee,
Sang the Ents, Dwarves and trees
May Elves sing thy praises
And a Ranger kiss thee!

Hope you've had a great day Belle. Thanks for all your contributuoins here. I always enjoy them.

So recipes: how about YAM AND RED PEPPER SOUP? It's sweet-tasting and so easy to make.

1-2 large yams, cut into chunks (as potatoes for boiling)
1-2 sweet red peppers, cut into 2" chunks
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic,minced (optional)
1 bay leaf, salt & pepper to taste
Cook above ingredients in chicken stock or vegetable stock, until soft. Let cool, then puree in blender. You might want to limit how much of the stock you use in puree-ing - depends what consistency of soup you want.

Enjoy. We had this at a restaurant and faked the recipe. it's become a favourite.

Happy belated birthday salutations BB!
I hope that your day was grand!
It's been a very hectic and busy weekend and I haven't touched my computer almost all weekend. I missed alot, seemingly.
Those recipes sound delicious. If only I had time to cook...perhaps I could change my reputation from being a bit "Eowyn"-ish in the kitchen.

Got to spend some time with my eldest child. He drove over on his new scooter. Now my husband wants one. Son rides his scooter most everywhere, except when it's raining or he's buying groceries. He's been saving $ on gasoline and having fun as well. He spent "quality" time with the "parental units" and dropped off some of his band's cds. Many of my friends at work and church want one and like my family discount price.

Thanks, everyone! My birthday was very quiet and I'd thought my family had forgotten it. However, as I sat at my computer sadly contemply this, my hubby went out to the garage and retrieved a large bubble-wrap package. No, nothing LoTR, but a gorgeous rendering of a fantasy world by an artist named Hans-Werner Sahm. All of his works cobtain unusual perspective.

There's an art site here: http://www.eurofineart.com/webstore/poster_gallery_01.htm that sells his stuff. They don't have the pic I got, but many of his others. Did find the pic on a different site:
https://www.sahm-bilder.com/frameset-e.htm

Is it a cave or a view from a high point? That's a valley down there, but the perspective looking out the cave would be enormous. They're fascinating! Highly recommend them for relaxation and plenty of comments from anyone visiting.

Going to get something to eat. I want to try that soup, Neenime, but it'll have to be on the weekend when I have more energy and time. Heh...

Wow - gorgeous art work. I think it may find its way to my desktop at work.

Hey, I got an awesome surprise tonight- a friend who is a choreographer just created a dance set to MAY IT BE. That's one of my favourite pieces. She dedicated it to me. It was so touching. She previously created a dance for INTO THE WEST for me, too. I am so lucky.

LOTR is full of touching spiritual themes and dancing them just adds to my enjoyment of the works. It brings them into my life in yet another way, besides the reading, films, music, the fellowship of CoE and the memorabilia.

I'm afraid that any kind of "fancy dancing" would be wasted on me. That is one art that I'm completely ignorant of. I mean, I like to watch women dance, but probably for the wrong reasons. I should shutup about that before I get in trouble.
Some of the recipes recently talked about seem A bit strange to me, but I would try them if I was offered some. A lot of people are picky eaters and I've never understood that. I'll try almost anything once. I said "almost" because some people eat things that I don't consider "food", like insects and worms. I've already eaten enough of those when they were not an intentional ingredient, like the cruise I made on the USS Saratoga (CV60) and all the flour was full of weavels. You could hold A slice of bread up to the light and it looked like scenes from A mini Pompei with all these little critters frozen in their tracks. Some were trying to shield their babies----- well, you get the picture. I didn't eat anything with flour in it, and so began my first low-carb diet.
I love Enya's "May it be" and Annie Lennox's "Into the west". I've tried singing those songs myself while acompan----acom-----accumt-------playing the guitar and it doesn't sound right, probably because I sound like A castrated frog and I'm not female. Ah, but swabby tries, swabby tries.

Sing away, swabby. Don't apoligize for singing. It's another one of those natural human urges that's good for the soul.

As for watching women dance - let's just understand that it's probably the same urge involved as when women (or some men) watch men lift weights or swing swords. Whatever - those urges are just aprt of howwe were created.

Mmmmmmmmmm - speaking of weavils - remember the bad joke made by Cap'n What's-'is-name (Russel Crowe) in MASTER AND COMMANDER? ABout the lesser of two "weavils"? Loved that one!

I see that heritavaril (did I get it right?) and I both have things posted at the humour section. swabby

Hi Swabby I must pop over and read what you have done in humour. Mine was just a very short silly idea the first fic I ever put up for posting. I wait a long time before posting fics and I start a lot that I never seem to finish.

Love to all

HT

PS feel free just to call me HT rather than trying to remember the whole name I don't mind at all

Alas, Swabby's tale of the weevils in the flour reminds me of an incident a couple of weeks ago.
Picture the scene: LadyA rushes home from work; LadyA hugs children then rushes into the kitchen to make dinner for self and imminently arriving starving hubby, plus German student house guest.
Well I can't remember what the main dish was, but I was about to dish up when I realised that I had forgotten to cook the curly kale to go with it - one of our favourite veg (or at least it used to be.....). Now kale doesn't take long to cook anyway, and I'd got one of those supermarket bags that normally contains product heavily insecticided and prewashed, so I'd just given it a good swish under the tap and popped it in a pan to sweat off for a couple of minutes, then rushed it onto the plates with everything else. Everyone tucked in for a couple of minutes, then our student friend asked "what are these little dots all over the kale?" Oh dear. The back of almost every leaf was coated with tiny little clinging insects. Steamed, and no doubt a healthy source of extra protein, but er, not a normal part of our diet. We all just removed the remaining leaves from our plates and tried not to think about how many we'd already eaten....

Liked the sound of dances to "May it Be" . A very fluid song, I'm sure it would be lovely to dance to.

Hello everyone! I've been a member of COE for over a year and still finding new things - like this post! What a pleasant surprise to find a thread with other "eldar" that share a love of Tolkien.

Does this thread have any particular theme, other than the obvious requirement? Such as introduction or personal info? Rather than writing an extensive post, I'll answer questions or fill in the blanks if there is anything someone wants to know.

Greetings to you Miththoliel! I'm A bit of A rooky here myself, but I'd say we talk about most anything and everything. (except politics, religion, etc) We are just big ol' Tolkien fanatics, so just tell us what you want us to know about you or wait untill we squeeze it outa ya! (just kidding)
Seriously, though, they've been putting up with me, and I'd say that makes them A right easy-going bunch of very nice, mostly female, very smart, sometimes silly, lovable folks. (I have to warn ya though, certain ones fancy themselves as sword swinging shieldmaidens, and they've got REAL swords) Don't say anything bad about Rangers. And don't say anything bad about Viggo, oh, and don't say anything bad about kilts. Well, perhaps it's better if you don't speak at all. HA! swabby
