The girl coloured slightly. "That is indeed a weighty task, milord." she said with a small smile. "I am honoured you see me fit to be entrusted with it. When would you like me to begin?"

In reply, "The translating - tomorrow afternoon," Eomer said, since from this day until leaving, Audiences would be held - and as many as could be squeezed in to the time allotted for it.

"After..." and the King paused slightly, "after the Rohirrim have headed out, and Lothiriel has returned from the first day's ride, will be soon enough for the lessons to begin. - Thank you, Lihtfota," Eomer added, knowing he had - indeed - given her an important task, but one he did she could be trusted with. "I know Lothiriel will be in good hands."

With that done, Eomer returned to his wife's side, and after telling Lothiriel all was settled (on that item), the evening meal was begun...

*********************************

By the time the sun began setting in the West, Namian was tired. - Yet, he was exhilarated, too.

Upon reaching Firefox's stall, the young Rider had spent a long time checking every buckle, examining every strap of leather for cracks or weakness, and polishing his mount's protective gear.

After that, he'd re-brushed his stallion's coat, made sure that the horse's hooves were in good shape, and ensured his current shoes were tight. Seeing one on the off-fore was a small bit 'worn', Namian took Firefox to the blacksmith, and waited patiently for his turn - since (of course) he wasn't the only Rider doing so. - And, though it might not 'truly' be needed, he teasingly 'bullied' the smith into replacing all four of them, and left with an extra 'set' that he made sure would be readily available… if the need arose.

From there, he hurried home, and made the same careful inspection of his own gear; buffing the already-gleaming armor and helm, and checking the sharpness of his sword - at the expense of a sliced thumb. Fuming at his own 'carelessness', Namian bandaged it carefully - though he was relieved the injury wasn't on his sword-hand, and then laid his gear where it could be reached at a moment's notice.

Following that, the young, brown-haired Rider packed what supplies he had there; knowing more would be doled out as it neared the time to depart, and set them next to his armor.

Glancing out the window, Namian grabbed a quick bite to eat, and then hurried to wash, and change clothes in preparation for meeting Ramo. Heading back to Meduseld, and the Royal Gardens, he wondered if his new love would already be there… and waiting. - And, the thought that Ramo might be - and that it was she he'd be meeting, caused him to almost run the entire way back…

After she had finished preparing her gift for Namian, Ramo changed into an ice blue dress that was a bit more fancy than her everday wear. She brushed her rust-colored locks out and let them hang loose. A piece of bread and cheese made up her supper. The young woman sat by her window working on a new piece of embroidery, dutifully waiting for the sun to set.

She walked in the gardens for a few minutes before Namian approached. A smile lit her face and she rushed to give him a hug. "I'm glad you came. Come, walk with me." They paced the paths hand in hand, her love telling Ramo of his outfitting for war. "Let's not speak of it please. I don't want to think about it until we have to." She pushed a stray piece of his hair away from his face fondly.

They sat on a bench then and she pulled out his gift. "I made this when I first came to Meduseld. I spent much of my time in the stables." Ramo handed it to him and let him look it over. The small pouch was made of tapestry and had a roan horse embroidered on it. "Wear it around your neck like this." She fitted the cord so the pouch hung just right. "And this." Ramo held out a length of her hair that she had braided. "Keep it in the pouch Namian. To remind you that my love for you will last, no matter what." Tears wet her lashes but she made a valiant effort not to cry.

Lothiriel put her arms about Eomer's waist and replied,

"Your decisions were very wise, I will not contest that. I only hope that I too can be someone the people will look up to in your absence. But let us talk no more of that." And she accepted his kiss and his arm as he led her to dinner. She knew that all eyes would be on her, they would want to see confidence and reassurance in her eyes and she only hoped that she looked like she knew what needed to be done.

Eomer sat at the head of the table, while she sat upon his right, and across from her sat Aragorn with Arwen.

"Good evening, Lady Arwen," Lothiriel said in Arwen's native tongue.

"It is a good evening," Arwen replied in the same language. " I know how hard this must be for you. But do not worry, the people of Rohan are hardy and fierce folk and Eomer will return alive and victorious."

"Can it be that some foresight has come to you, Lady Arwen? Or do you seek to ease my anxiety with deceptive words? Not even the wise truly can know the outcome of any event, in peacetime or in war." Glancing at Eomer, Lothiriel continued on still in elvish,

" If I could, I would give up my very lineage and wealth to save him from any evil that would befall him. But I cannot. I am but part elvish and do not have the skills you possess in foresight or guardianship."

" I do not have the measure of foresight I once was granted, that is true, but my heart forbids that victory shall come at a price, though what that price is set at, I cannot know." Arwen replied.

Aragorn turned and said to them in elvish, " Do not be rude, my ladies. Eomer cannot understand what you speak. Perhaps you wish for it to be this way, but if you do not want him to hear what you speak of, I would advise speaking of it in private."

Arwen nodded as did Lothiriel and she turned to Eomer and smiled. " Forgive me, I did not mean to be rude. Dinner is over, shall we dance?" And Lothiriel smiling, led Eomer to the dance floor to dance. She soaked up the whole night's activities as if they would be the last she would ever share with him. And when they retired to bed, Lothiriel fell asleep, safe in his strong arms, feeling more secure than she had all day. How she loved him so.

(( Happy Belated BD, LizzyB! Good luck! ))

Returning Ramo's hug tightly, Namian railed at himself that the only thing he could think of to talk about was his afternoon's activities as they walked down the garden paths, enjoying the sweet fragances wafting through the air.

Awed, Namian's hand shook as he gently took the braid from Ramo's fingers. - And, the pouch? It was... well, 'incredible' was the word that came to the young Rider's mind. "Thank you!" he whispered, and since even those words weren't anywhere 'close' to what he was feeling, Namian leaned down to give Ramo a soft kiss.

Then, holding her eyes with his own, he lightly kissed the braid, and carefully tucked it into the pouch. - After which, he tucked the pouch itself inside his tunic, so it rested above his heart.

"Do you see, my love?" he asked softly, "I have your love to protect me, Ramo! What 'ill' will dare to breach it?"

With that said, Namian was content to just hold Ramo close, and listen to the quiet of the evening.

*********************************

At first, when he returned to the dinner-table, Eomer smiled to hear Lothiriel speaking to the Queen of Gondor in the elven-tongue. He'd not known she could, but it was nice to know. - Yet, as the conversation continued, he began feeling... 'uncomfortable', and just a bit 'left out'.

Particularly, Eomer thought, because of being well aware that Aragorn would know every word that was being spoken... and that he, Eomer, had - with the exception of that first day's Audience - been quite careful not to speak his native Rohirric in front of Lothiriel - not unless he, or someone else, was 'available' to translate for her.

Not quite sure whether to 'say' something or not, when his brother-king (apparently) did (since it, too, was in elvish), Lothiriel apologized, and immediately pulled him up to dance. Smiling happily, Eomer's attention was all on his new wife.

And, later, whilst Lothiriel slept in the warmth of his embrace, the King of Rohan could not. Eomer was tired, and there was still so much to do before leaving Edoras, but it was as if he could not bear to miss one moment of having his wife near.

Yet, when morning came, he woke to find Lothiriel smiling at him. Smiling back, they bid each other good morning, and after breakfast, Eomer was down in his office.

With his Queen right by his side, the King of Rohan began acquainting Lothiriel with the various documents and Records necessary to aid her in taking care of Rohan during his absence. When he came across the one listing Navinai's banishment, however, Eomer paused, and looked up at his wife. Quite aware that Niela was the only person left from his beloved Lothiriel's home-city, Eomer knew his Queen would need that friendship to help sustain her, and he frowned a bit with concern.

"Lothiriel?" he asked, "How has your maid taken this banishment of my ex-manservant? Have you spoken to her at all?"

((Sorry, posts are likely to be sporadic for a while. Hurricane Rita is disrupting everything for a while))

After breakfast Niela and checking on the queen's rooms, Niela determined to go for a short stroll outside. She found herself wandering to the stables.

Was it only a few days ago that Navinai had taken her her?
Carefully staying out of the stable hand's way, she walked up and down by the stalls.

One of the stallions she recognized.
"Firefox." She murmured softly and reached out her hand to scratch his muzzle. "Namian's mount. I wonder which of these horses that rider Rynan owns."

o O (Thanks bunches!! My face is still sore as one would expect but I believe I am recovering well, despite the 6-hour gap in my memory Hope you and your family are safe Princess!!)

"Do you see, my love?" he asked softly, "I have your love to protect me, Ramo! What 'ill' will dare to breach it?"

They had been silent the rest of the evening, two lovers basking in a moment they wished would last forever. The sun streamed brightly through the windows and Ramo bolted upright. "Sleeping in late again. This truly is becoming a bad habit with you darling." She smiled as she readied for her day. Niela had already seen to the Royal's needs and Ramo wandered through the palace halls for awhile. The hall was abuzz with activity, preperations for war. It was the waiting that she hated. Rohan had ridden to battle many time since she had come here and it was always the same. The women putting up brave fronts for their men. She touched her hand to her lips, remembering the lingering kiss Namian had placed there. "You will come back to me."

"No, I have not. I haven't really spoken to her at all since the wedding." Lothiriel furrowed her brow and continued, " I must speak with her, I have to make sure that she is not too upset." A servant boy was standing outside of the office and Lothiriel asked him to fetch Niela so that she might speak with her. The boy ran off and Lothiriel turned back to Eomer. She had her hands full of documents that she and Eomer had gone over in the past hours. Sinking into a chair, Lothiriel placed the papers on her lap and gave Eomer a weak smile.

"I am expected to know all of these decrees and laws inside out but I know I am setting myself up to fail in this endevour." Rising, she walked to Eomer and looked him in the eyes.

"But I promise you that I will do my best while you tarry." She put her hand over the pendant she had given him and clasped her fingers around it. " When you are away, in the midst of war and enemies, when you fear you can trust no one, trust this... trust us..." She leaned closer to him. " Trust in the love that we share and no harm will sever us." And she kissed him briefly. " I must go to meet Niela, I do not know if the servant boy was able to find her." And she left the room, her dark locks bouncing about her shoulders.

The Prince Imrahil led his men out of Edoras like a prince should but his heart was trying to force him to stay yet one more day. Lothiriel had filled a spot in his heart and now there would be only a hole when he returned to Dol Amroth. They rode through the afternoon and halfway through the night, for they were well rested and restless to ride. The men and their prince were silent untl dawn broke and the Prince pulled his horse up besides Navinai's. He said nothing for a time, he only rode beside Navinai and then,

" Navinai, why did you say what you did? Was there reason to your madness or do foolish thoughts run rampant through your mind?" He paused and continued, " I will have an answer from you Navinai, one way or another."

" Trust in the love that we share and no harm will sever us." And she kissed him briefly. " I must go to meet Niela, I do not know if the servant boy was able to find her." And she left the room, her dark locks bouncing about her shoulders.

Eomer's eyes followed his wife as she left his office. Setting the documents aside, he rose, and stared out the window. Lothiriel would do her best - he needed no 'promises' from her on it... nor would Rohan's Queen 'fail' - of that, Eomer was certain. Yet, he despised that what could have been learned at leisure, must be gone over in too few days.

As she had done, Eomer's hand gripped the pendant 'round his neck, and for a long moment, the Rohanian King was lost in thought. The love they had he would trust... and cling to with all his heart during the separation to come, for he could do nothing else...

A step behind him, and Eomer turned. "Aragorn!" he nodded to the chair vacated by his wife. "Does your Lady remain in Edoras during our absence?" Eomer inquired as they sat to begin their work. "You both know she's more than welcome."

"No," Aragorn replied, and shook his head. "When we reach Amon Dîn to meet Gondor's soldiers, her guards will escort Arwen South to Minas Tirith. As soon as they're on their way, we will continue on to the East and North to join Faramir's forces in Ithilien.

At that, Eomer's face turned to stone. 'Life', he knew, was not 'fair'. Not to peasants, or Nobles, or Kings - but this was almost more than he could bear.

One day more he and Lothiriel would have together... but when the first night's Encampment broke, she would watch him ride off to War... and for who knew how long. - Yet... he who was Eomer's brother-in-arms; his peer, and friend of many years, would have what a man newly-married would not: the company of his wife for just those few extra days travel.

The flash of understanding in Aragorn's eyes helped not at all, and no matter that he'd not for one instant shirk his Alliance with Gondor - or leave his own brother-in-law bereft of Rohan's help... but it was with an inner rage that Eomer King turned to delving into plans he had no wish to make...

****************************

Morning dawned to find Namian reluctant to rise. The evening with Ramo had been relived in his dreams, to the point that if he did get up, the Young Rider was almost afraid he'd break the 'spell' of it.

Yet, knowing he must... and that even if it be only tonight he saw Ramo again with his busy day, Namian rose, and after another quick check of his gear, headed out.

Often, as he worked on the preparations, Namian found himself touching the pouch Ramo had given him - still tucked safely beneath his shirt. - And, strengthened by the love they now shared, he entered into his duties with an even greater confidence... to the point that he (uncharacteristically) spoke up in a strategy-meeting - and to his surprise, found the First Marshall agreeing heartily with his ideas.

"I'll take them to the King," the man nodded, and made a number of notes whilst Namian fought not to flush under the intense scruitiny he was receiving. The result of his comments, however, was something he would not have ever expected. - And, when it occurred, the young Rider wondered how Ramo was going to take the news when he finally had a chance to tell her...

[OOC: Hope everyone is alright! Gah I'm *so* busy these days. Won't be posting as much as usual! Sorry... Desperately hoping it will clear up *soon*...]

As soon as Lihtfota had finished with her usual morning chores and realised she had quite some time before the afternoon, she immediately sought to find Ramo. Which was not the easiest of tasks at the moment. The halls were alive with a neverending stream of people; not only those on their usual duties, but people running last minute errands, Riders stealing a moment with their loved ones... and everyone in a rush. The girl could not remember a time Edoras had ever been so bustling except maybe during the war of the Ring, but she *had* been too young to remember much then.

Ramo was in a corner, watching Namian's retreating form as he hurried off to his own duties for the day. Lihtfota stole up and gave Ramo's hair a light, playful tug. Her friend looked none to cheerful, but Lihtfota hoped to remedy that as much as possible.

"Good morning, though, I suppose, that was said more for decorum rather than meant. How's Namian?"

Ramo turned at a slight tug on her hair to see Lihtfotas smiling face. "Good morn to you too my friend. Namian is . . . " She sighed and blushed. "Well. But unhappy." She picked up a basket of dirty linens and began walking down the hall. "He rides with the rest of the company tomorrow and his heart breaks to leave me. Truth be told the condition of my spirit is none better." A single tear traced its way down her cheek and the maiden hurriedly brushed it away. "Och. I have no time for these melancholy thoughts. There's much to be done before they ride to war." Her green eyes turned to Lihtfota and any fool could see that they were full of sadness and fear. "You must think me foolish for such feelings."

****************************************************

Navinai turned towards the Prince and bowed his head. "I know that what I spoke is true. Is Eomer any more righteous than Theodred because he is now King?? Truth my sister loved the young Prince." His cold blue eyes stared off into the distance, at nothing. "And I hated him for it. All he need do was crook his finger and she was there at his feet. Our family was fed off money from the Royal treasury. None knew this of course. But it seemed all did. My sister could not walk through our village without whispers haunting her footsteps. I do not wish the same on your daughter. She will be ridiculed for befriending her husbands mistress."

Lihtfota shook her head, and subtlely offered Ramo her handkerchief.

"There is nothing wrong in fearing for the ones you love. But I do believe they will come back fine, or at least Namian has a good chance of it. He is young, he is strong, and now he has you to keep him going."

She kept pace with her friend down the corridor and offered to help with the extra chores. After all, she did have quite some time until Eomer and Lothriel sent for her.

((Thanks, we're okay just busy))

Niela watched a serving boy approach quickly from down the hall.

"Pardon me, Lady Niela. The queen summons you."

As she followed the lad she thought she glimpsed the rider Rynan talking with a group of concerned looking men.

War was fast becoming a frightening reality.

"You seem rather sure of yourself, Naviniai. Too sure. You have not the proof to support your accusation, yet you accuse Eomer of something that his cousin may have done? Eomer is related to Theodred by blood, but Eomer is a far nobler man than Theodred ever was. Of that I can be sure. I sympathize with you in the mistreatment of your sister but there are other ways you could have vented your anger. Why did you direct it at my daughter and Ramo?" the Prince asked.

Navinai was silent for some moments as they rode along. He could not place in words what he felt or how he knew that he was sure of Eomer's actions. Nor could he explain these things to Prince Imrahil. Finally he turned to the older man and spoke. "Wars are started on rumors that have less foundation than the ones I have heard recently. Can you insure your daughters happiness with a man who continues to keep a half-breed servant in his palace? One he knows to be the product of an illigitemat union? I do not care my Liege, but you should." He directed his ash-blue eyes back to the horizon, his mind wandering to Niela.

****************************************************

Ramo accepted the proffered handkerchief with a smile. "Yes I do love him. And that thought is enough to bring me hope." She stepped into the bright sunlight of a Rohirrim morning and looked sideways at her friend. "You ride out with the company, yes? Perhaps you could sneak me into your carriage of instruments." A shadow passed over her face and the handmaiden shook her head. "Or perhaps I could ride to war myself, as Lady Eowyn did. Would that not be a thing to experience?"

The Prince Imrahil laughed in response to Navinai.

"Do you not know, Navinai, that I am a "half-breed" also? I am a descendent of the union of a mortal and an elf-maiden. Does this make me a lesser man? I think not. Ramo, whether she is "illegitimate" or not, does not matter. Her parentage does not determine who she will become or who she is."

Eomer and Aragorn were running through a number of strategies against the orcs, when the First Marshall entered, and handed his King a sheaf of papers.

Nodding, Eomer began rifling through them, and then paused to read two of them carefully. His lips twitched, and eyeing the Marshall, "Good choice!" he commented, "And for a good reason! I'll add this to what we've got here to discuss with Faramir when we reach Ithilien. - Does he know?"

"Yes, my lord," and at his Ruler's dismissal the First Marshall bowed himself out of the office.

"Take a look at this," Eomer then chuckled, and handed one of the pages to his peer... which Aragorn scanned. "Not bad at all!" the Gondorian King nodded, "If it will work." "We'll see what my brother-in-law thinks," was the reply.

"Now..." Aragorn returned to their former subject, but Eomer shook his head. "We've done enough for today," he said, "And we've got tomorrow morning to finish." Glancing out the window the King of Rohan sighed. It was nowhere near noon, and since Lothiriel hadn't returned, she was obviously still closeted with her maid.

"See you at lunch, my friend," Eomer added, and... feeling a little... 'lost', wandered out to the Royal Stables.

They were, as they should be at a time like this, bustling with activity. With nods the Rohanian Ruler acknowledged the various Riders, and headed to check on both the new foal, and his mother.

OOC: This is by Princess and I

Lothiriel met the servant boy in the hall followed by Niela. " Good, he found you! Do you mind if we go somewhere to speak?" And not waiting for a response, Lothiriel walked out onto the ledge of the Golden Hall.

"How are you Niela, really? I know it must be hard for you with Navinai being gone."

"I...." Niela struggled with her words for a moment. "I am alright, truly. Only I am very lonley."

"Oh, Niela," Lothiriel replied. " I did not mean to bring you here to make you lonely, I am sorry that things have gotten out of hand so fast. Eomer is riding to war in 2 days or less, I do not know, and I am to be sole ruler of Rohan until his return. So much has been running through my mind, I haven't been a good friend to you, and for that I am sorry. Ramo and Lihtfota do not keep you company? Perhaps, if you would acquaint yourself with the other servants in the palace, you may find a good companion. Of course, I am always ready to talk or to go for a ride or a walk. Please, just tell me when you would like to spend some time together and I'll try to accomadate you as best I can. I wish it didn't have to be this way either, Niela."

"Thank you, Lothiriel. I understand you will be very busy with King Eomer gone." She played with the edge of her sleeve. "I would like to get to know some of the other servants better but I'm not sure how to accomplish it. I fear they hold the incident with Navinai against me."

"Nay," Lothiriel said pulling Niela into an embrace. " If they think these absurd thoughts now, I am sure that in time, you will disprove them wholly. Do not give up Niela, that is what everyone is thinking you will do. Show them that you are stronger than this. I have as has Ramo."

"You have always been the strong one," Niela replied, returning the embrace. "And now you will be acting as Rohan's sole ruler. Is there anything you cannot do? But thank you again for your words, I will do my best."

Lothiriel cupped Niela's chin with her hand. " You also have strength, you only have to look deep within yourself to find it. You are a brave girl, Niela." Lothiriel embraced her once more before looking up and seeing Eomer coming out of the Golden Hall.

"I must go, but please don't forget what I formerly promised. If you need anything, and I mean *anything* do not hesitate to speak with me about it." Lothiriel gave Niela a reassuring look, and gathering her rather billowy skirt, hurried to greet Eomer.

"I hope your meeting went as well as mine did, love. Niela has but a shadow of regret about Navinai and her and I are back to where we should be. That is comforting to me at least. Nonetheless, what did you decide your plan of action might be?"

All thoughts of the newest addition to his Stables fled from Eomer's mind when he saw Lothiriel. - And, oh! What could brighten a day but to see one's beloved wife coming to greet one?
"I hope your meeting went as well as mine did, love. Niela has but a shadow of regret about Navinai and her and I are back to where we should be. That is comforting to me at least. Nonetheless, what did you decide your plan of action might be?"

Relieved for his wife's sake, Eomer tucked Lothiriel's arm in his, and headed back inside for lunch. Shrugging at her question, though, the King of Rohan was noncommittal in his answer. "Well enough, I suppose," he said, "and we do have a number of options to discuss with Faramir when we reach Ithilien."

Upon reaching the dining room, though, Eomer paused, and smiled into Lothiriel's eyes. "But - I have had enough of 'war talk' for today. For now... we have the noon meal... the Audiences... and otherwise, I just want to spend as much time with you as I can. Perhaps... would you take an evening ride with me?"

********************************

Finishing what he could of his morning's duties, Namian headed to Meduseld. Yes, he'd see Ramo that evening in the Gardens... but a bite of lunch in her company would be a welcome break. - And, to his inner amusement, found himself again accosting every Palace worker he ran into for his new love's whereabouts...

Navinai listened to the Prince's words quietly and offered none of his own. Perhaps there was some truth to what Imrahil was saying but the young man sincerely doubted it. What you were made who you were. Look at Eomer King. He had been born to Royalty and now ruled a country. Ramo on the other hand had been born to poverty and would always be nothing more than a servant. He pondered this for a few minutes then drew a piece of parchment from his tunic and continued to work on the letter he had been drafting for Niela. If he kept his eyes open ann opportunity to send it back to Rohan would present itself.

****************************************************

Ramo finished hanging the last of the laundry when a harried looking servant rushed up to her. "Ramo, please come inside. That lover of yours is driving everyone mad looking for you!" She laughed and made her way back to the palace. Sure enough there was Namian badgering Cook. "Namian do you have nothing better to do than search the grounds for me?" A twinkle lit her eye and she smiled broadly. Her duties where done for the moment and perhaps they could lunch together.

Lothiriel accepted Eomer's proposal for a late night ride and went with him to the audiences. She again watched closely as Eomer ruled but a woman in the corner of the room caught her eye. She seemed to be holding something close to her chest and rocking it; a baby probably, Lothiriel thought. The woman's clothes were rather ratty and her face seemed full of worry. She kept looking at the child and then nervously looking around.

When the Audiences were finished, Lothiriel excused herself and hurried to where the woman had been. She had not presented any case for the audiences and seemed rather reluctant to leave. Lothiriel hurried up behind her and touched her shoulder. The woman whirled around and her face paled.

"Is something wrong?" Lothiriel asked. " I noticed you were present for the whole of the audiences but did not present any case. Can I help you with anything?"

The woman hesitantly looked at Lothiriel and then down again at the bundle in her arms. She whispered,

"He is very sick, I have not the money to care for him, nor the skills to heal him. No one in the village will help me because I cannot pay. I do not know what request I would make of you, just that you would help my child in some way."

Lothiriel looked on the woman with compassion and said,

"Here, let me look at him." Lothiriel very gently took him from his mother and saw that he was underfed and hot to the touch. She turned to Eomer and called him over.

"Was Aragorn present for the audiences? He possesses the hands of a healer and perhaps he can cure this child." Lothiriel inquired. She turned back to the mother but she was not there, she had left!

"Where did she go?" Lothiriel asked, searching the entire room with her eyes. The guards claimed that she had ran down the front steps and disappeared among the houses. Lothiriel sighed.

"I suppose we now have no choice but to care for this child. Quick," she said to one of the servants. " Find Aragorn and bring some blankets."

Aragorn came back and he stirred some hot water with other herbs and laved it on the child's forehead. The fever soon subsided and Lothiriel wrapped him in a blanket and gave him to one of the maids.

"Find him some food that he can eat and put him down for a rest. Do not take your eyes off of him for even a minute." Lothiriel commanded and she took Eomer's arm and looking once more at the maid carrying the child away, they walked out to the gardens.

"Who would just abandon their child like that?" Lothiriel asked, her face full of care. "I think he will make it, if he can survive tonight. But who is to raise him? No servant would willingly take on the charge, that is certain. They have enough duties to attend to." She sighed and rested her head on Eomer's shoulder. " And on top of it all you are leaving for war the day after tomorrow."

Ignoring the glares he was receiving from the busy servants, Namian made his way to the kitchen. Dragging the Cook away from her pots and pans, he demanded to know if she had any idea where Ramo might be.
"Namian do you have nothing better to do than search the grounds for me?" A twinkle lit her eye and she smiled broadly.

"There you are!" the young Rider grinned, and putting his arm around Ramo, led her out into the hallway. But, shrugging a bit, "I've been busy - all morning," Namian answered. "Do you have time for lunch now?" he inquired, and at his love's assent, took the two of them to a quiet corner of the dining room.

And, since he didn't want to 'spoil' their meal, Namian waited until they met in the Gardens after dinner that night to share what he was certain to increase Ramo's fears. But, with the Palace rife with chatter, it was best she hear this from his own lips. And, it was as 'gently' as possible that Namian 'broke' his news.

"There's been a - a 'change' in my duties," the young Rider told her. "I've been moved into the King's Company. I'm to be in the Second Rank of Riders."

Anxiously, Namian searched Ramo's eyes. "Do you understand, Ramo?" he asked softly, and wondered if she did.

An honor, yes, and a mark of 'favor' to Ride with Eomer's Eóred - but though all the Rohirrim would be fighting, it was the Ruler's command who led the way - and as such... they were in the forefront of danger.

*********************************

Once again, Eomer took great care during the Audiences to explain each of his decisions thoroughly. As she'd been asked, Lihtfota was near to Lothiriel, translating for his beloved wife when it was needed.

Yet, the King of Rohan was shocked at seeing the ailing child. Denied help for her son because she couldn't 'pay'? Whilst Lothiriel called Aragorn to tend to the boy, Eomer was busy.

"Where was she from?" he demanded angrily, and glared at the guards, "Find her if you can - but treat the woman gently - this is no fault of hers! - I want to know which Village this happened in!" Furious, Eomer wished mightily he was not on the 'brink' of leaving for war. During the time he'd been King, the Rohanian had tried hard to impress upon his people that even a promise of the smallest payment was enough for those who sought medical help... and to find his orders being disobeyed was unacceptable! No, Eomer wasn't perfect, but he'd tried so hard to help those he could...

Returning to where they'd been treating the child, Eomer peered in the door to see them coming out.

"I don't know who would, but someone in desperation," Eomer answered, and wrapped his arms around his wife.

Holding Lothiriel tightly, Eomer sighed sadly, and addressed the last of her comments, first. "If I could, I would sweep away all our enemies so we would never be bothered again with war... but I can not. If Ithilien were to fall, Gondor and Rohan might be next. I'm not fighting just for Faramir, my love, but for us! - And, I will return to you - I promise!" and 'sealed' it with a tender kiss.

"And, as for caring for the child," he smiled, "Cene has quite a large family - and he and his wife have open arms. But... do you want to tend him? - At least until I return? - Or, what of your Maid? - Would Niela help?"

Ramo turned away from him, her face ashen. "Yes I understand. Namian, I know it is a great honor for you but I wish it were not so." Tears filled her green eyes and her shoulders shook with barely contained sobs. "Why has Eomer placed you with the Eored? He must have a reason." She pressed a hand to her lips as if to stop the flow of words. Her heart felt as if it had shattered and would never be whole again. She looked at the man she loved sorrowfully and placed a hand on his cheek. "I am proud of you Namian. Yet fear resides within me."

After meeting with Lothiriel, Niela went back to her mistress's rooms and made sure that they were in order.

Next Niela decided to work on finishing the bit of embroidery she'd started shortly after arriving in Rohan.

She'd chosen a wistful scene of a lone figure standing among the rolling plains of Rohan under a grey sky that eventually faded into a blue sky overlooking a deep blue sea.

Just a few moments working on it, however, made her decide to lay it aside. It no longer represented what she felt anymore. Instead of pining away for the life she'd left, she would embrace her new one and thrive.

I should try to get to know Lihofota and Ramo better just as Lothirel suggested. She thought and began to head toward the kitchens.

On her way through the now quiet passages a sudden voice barking out a single word made her stop suddenly.

"You."

It was the woman Niela had seen with the Rider Rynan yesterday. She was standing in a doorway with a hand resting on either side of the frame. At that moment the woman's green eyes seemed to hold a flickering strange fathomless expression. Suddenly the woman broke into a warm smile and the strange look was gone.

"Please excuse my rudeness I am Haelana. And you are Niela, the queen's handmaiden are you not? I remember seeing you yesterday in the corridor when...when we first heard the news."

"Yes, yes I am. I remember seeing you as well. I was rather...distressed and your husband was kind enough to ask me if I was alright."

A quick rush of sunny laughter swept through Haelana. "Rynan? Nay, he is no husband of mine. Not yet anyway."
She paused.
"I would like to speak to you again soon for I'm afraid I am already late for a ride."

"Oh of course. I did not mean to keep you," Niela murmured as Haelana passed with a quick nod and departed.

Niela continued on her way to the kitchen.

She looked at the man she loved sorrowfully and placed a hand on his cheek. "I am proud of you Namian. Yet fear resides within me."

"Ramo!" Namian's voice was soft, and gently, he took his love's face in his hands. Kissing her brow, and one wet cheek, the young Rider held her tightly. "It was the First Marshall... but Eomer had to approve it," Namian explained. "He - they liked an idea I had for battling the orcs. Whether they'll use it or not - I have no way of knowing, but that's why the change."

Gazing down into her eyes again, Namian found his breath was stolen away. Oh, to have someone such as Ramo love him! How no man had seen it before himself, he couldn't imagine, but Namian was glad of it now. "You are so beautiful, my love!" he softly exclaimed, "So wonderful!" and leaned closer to give her a tender, lingering kiss.

"When I come back..." and the determination in the Rider's voice to do so was strong, "When I do... will you join your life with mine? Will you be my wife, Ramo? - You don't have to answer now, but will you think on it?"

Searching Ramo's eyes anxiously, Namian knew that even a promise that she'd consider marrying him, would be more than he ever could have hoped for...

Lothiriel stood, deep in thought.

"I can perhaps care for him, for a time, anyway. But he is not ours Eomer. I can raise him as I would a son for he ever pulls at my heartstrings. I will at least name him. I wish to name him Arquen. It is Quenya for "noble." He has had the fortune to fall into the hands of nobility. Though he will never be heir to your throne, I would still like to care for him. He has no one else at the moment. If someone returns to claim him, I will give him up, even, if I must, to the mother who abandoned him. But let us brush these thoughts away." She paused and tilted her head to the sky.

"I am ever amazed at how beautiful the stars are over Rohan. They are like gems from the Valar themselves." Lothiriel turned to Eomer and said, " I am rather tired, Eomer. Would you mind if we forego our evening ride for a morning one?" And not waiting for a response, she took Eomer's hand and led him back to their room.

The fire had been lit and the room was so comfortable. Lothiriel sat at the edge of the bed and asked, " How many men are you taking with you to war? Are they strong and able bodied? Will they be able to defeat the orcs at Ithilien?" She sighed. " I fear for you Eomer, I am afraid that every moment that we have together will be our last. I am afraid that after I bid farewell to you at the first encampment that will be the last time I see you. Oh, Eomer. I have been so haunted by dreams of late and I cannot keep up the facade of strength for much longer." And a tear ran down her face. " Forgive me, I am so selfish. I am trying to tempt you from your duty. Please, do not heed my tears. I will go on if I have your promise that you will return."

"You are so beautiful, my love!" His words brought a puzzled look to her face. Ramo had never been called beautiful before. In fact she considered herself quite plain and ordinary. But Namians lips on her own swept all thoughts from her mind. Her arms twined themselves around his neck of their own will. She smiled at him, filled with love for this man.

"When I come back..." and the determination in the Rider's voice to do so was strong, "When I do... will you join your life with mine? Will you be my wife, Ramo? - You don't have to answer now, but will you think on it?"

Her breath caught and Ramo would have sworn her life that her heart had stopped for a second. He was asking her to be his wife. She looked away from his searching blue eyes for a moment and watched the stars. The quiet was thick between them before she spoke. "They say that the stars hold our destinies. But I believe that we have our own choices to make." She rested a hand on his chest, feeling the pouch beneath his tunic. Her love-gift to him. "I am honored that you would choose me for your bride Namian. I accept and will wait for you to return to me." Tears again filled her eyes but they were tears of joy.

****************************************************

They had made camp late that night and Navinai sat by the fire with the parchment on his lap. He was putting the finishing touches on the letter and read it over once more to make sure he hadn't left anything out.

My dearest Niela,

I know that Eomer King has forbidden me to write you but I risk it for my heart demands I do so. I thought of you when I woke this morning and your face has stayed with me throughout the day. I pray that you are happy in Rohan though I wish you were here with me.

Prince Imrahil wishes me to retract my statements about Eomer and Ramo but my convictions will not allow it. I know what has passed between them, although it seems I am the only one who has seen it. Watch over Lothiriel for I fear she will be greatly hurt by the man who claims to love her.

If you can write to me please do so. Even if you are unable to send me your missives, write. That way when we are together once again I can read them and know how you felt.

There were a few little things in there about the changes of scenery and such and Navinai found it to be satisfactory. He signed his name at the bottom in flowing letters and folded it carefully and tucked the parchment in his tunic. It would stay there until he was able to post it.

The fire had been lit and the room was so comfortable. Lothiriel sat at the edge of the bed and asked, " How many men are you taking with you to war? Are they strong and able bodied? I am trying to tempt you from your duty. Please, do not heed my tears. I will go on if I have your promise that you will return."

Eomer had been standing near the fireplace, and leaning against the mantle whilst Lothiriel spoke. When she'd finished, he almost shook his head in disbelief. 'Tempt him from his duty?' How had Eomer not made it clear that - if at all possible - he would have consigned this upcoming departure to rest beside the destroyed Ring, and never leave her?

In a few swift steps, the King of Rohan was by his wife's side. Lothiriel was in his arms then, and Eomer kissed her, deeply... trying once again to tell her so. Resting her cheek against his, the Leader of the Rohirrim addressed her questions.

"Fifteen hundred of the best will Ride from Edoras, love," Eomer answered, "and five hundred will arrive from the Westfold tomorrow. We'll pick up a thousand more as we head East. Even if Gondor and Ithilien were to bring none, the Rohirrim will prevail, Lothiriel - of that you may be sure! - And," lifting his head, Eomer looked into her eyes, "I wouldn't be surprised if the Elves of North Ithilien will be with us, too. Aragorn told me that Legolas of Mirkwood is now there... and that is to our advantage."

Once again, Eomer kissed his beloved. "I promise, Lothiriel!" he said softly, yet his voice was strong, "I will return!"

Deciding he was in no mood to be in anyone else's company, Eomer rose and bid the guard outside to have their dinner brought up. Tomorrow night they would be with the others, and it being on the eve of departure, that was good enough. This night... belonged to himself, and Lothiriel...

********************************
"They say that the stars hold our destinies. But I believe that we have our own choices to make." She rested a hand on his chest, feeling the pouch beneath his tunic. Her love-gift to him. "I am honored that you would choose me for your bride Namian. I accept and will wait for you to return to me." Tears again filled her eyes but they were tears of joy.

A smile as wide as anything spread on Namian's face, yet the hand that gently brushed Ramo's tears away, was trembling with the young Rider's joy.

Unable to speak, Namian could only kiss Ramo again, to share that same joy with she who held all his dreams in her hands.

It was late before the young man finally left for his own dwelling, unwilling to leave her side. They'd talked some... but mostly, walked the paths, or sat on a bench to just bask in each other's company.

And, so it was the following night, though Namian couldn't stay quite as late as he'd wanted.

Yet, on the morning of departure... arrayed the Armor of the Rohirrim, and standing proudly by Firefox's head, Namian searched through the gathering Riders for his love. All around him, warriors and their loved ones were making their farewells... and so, too, would he.

Not far away, the young Rider saw Deorfota was ready... and standing alongside the tall horse, so, too, was Anor. As the sun rose, a glint caught his eye, and there came Eomer King and his Queen.

Armored he was, and armed; with shield strapped to his back... yet the Rohanian Ruler was carrying his helm in one arm, and Lothiriel was on his other. Proud Eomer King was... and his face was set to allow no emotion to be seen on it. As a wave of bows swept through the Riders and their families, though, Namian saw the glance the two of them exchanged. - And... the pain of upcoming separation was more than clear in it.

He spotted Lihtfota... and the Queen's maid, too... yet, Namian's eyes were searching for only one person: Ramo.

(( Hopefully this is ok... if not, I can edit!! ))

That night passed so sweetly, yet so fast. Before she knew it, Lothiriel was dressed in a midnight blue cloak and boarding her horse to ride with Eomer to the first encampment. Her long lashes seemed frozen, she barely blinked. She felt as if this all was a nightmare coming true. The dream she had had the night before did nothing to ease her fears.

She was standing on a large hill overlooking a vast plain. The grass was dead and nothing around seemed alive. She could hear the sea in the background and saw the white buildings of Ithilien in the distance. She looked down and it seemed as if great armies of orcs just appeared and began streaming across the plains followed by men of Rohan, Gondor and elsewhere, she did not know. Then they were gone and only a lone figure remained on the field - Eomer. She tried to run to him but couldn't seem to move fast enough. She reached him but he was already gone, she tried to wake him from this sleep of death but to no avail. Then everything faded and she awoke.

Lothiriel pursed her lips and swung herself up on her horse. She awaited Eomer and while she waited, Lothiriel scanned the company of men moving out.

"They are valiant men," she thought to herself. "They must return, I know they will." She turned as Eomer rode up to her.

The next day hurried by in a flurry of activity. The King and Queen, along with the Court and all of the soldiers save a small company, were leaving Meduseld. Ramo was not sure whether any preparations had been made for her to accompany them and had resigned herself to staying behind. The morning of the departure came clear and cool. She put on a brave face as she finished packing the last of Lothiriels things then hurried down the many steps of the palace in search of Namian.

She found him standing beside his horse with his back turned to her. With a mischevious smile on her face she tapped his left shoulder then quickly moved when he turned around. "Good morning Namian." Ramo did her best to keep the worry from her eyes as he smiled at her. "Come back to me safely."

At the sight of Eomer King swinging up on to his stallion's back, Namian's heart sank. He'd not yet found Ramo in the crowd... and that was the signal. All around the assembled, Riders began doing the same, but he woud not - not until he'd bid his love farewell... or not until the last possible moment...
With a mischevious smile on her face she tapped his left shoulder then quickly moved when he turned around. "Good morning Namian." Ramo did her best to keep the worry from her eyes as he smiled at her. "Come back to me safely."

"Ramo!" Namian smiled, and relieved beyond measure that he'd not missed bidding Ramo farewell, swept her into the tightest of hugs. "I will - I promise!" he went on, and touching her cheek gently, kissed his love one last time. "I love you, Ramo!" he whispered into her ear, and held her close.

"Namian!" Startled, the young Rider let go, and turning, saw the King looking down on them with a slight smile. "My lord!" Namian answered, and bowed.

Waving that aside, "You're ready?" Eomer inquired, and then frowned. "Ramo - where's your mount?"

Surprised, and... with a wave of - of - Namian couldn't answer - but wasn't given time, for with a wink, the King of Rohan called for the Stablemaster to fetch his former Handmaiden's mount.

Smiling widely as Eomer turned Deorfohta, Namian hugged his love again. "You're coming to the Encampment!" he cried happily.

**********************************

Rather pleased with himself for surprising both Namian and Ramo, Eomer expertly threaded his stallion through the milling horses, making his way back to Lothiriel. "Are you ready Lothiriel?" he asked, and held out his hand to grip hers tightly for a brief moment.

Turning back to survey the scene, and when the Marshalls reported all was set, Eomer gazed at Lothiriel, love shining clearly in his eyes. "Follow me, love," he said quietly, and moved Deorfohta to the head of the waiting Riders.

With his wife on his left-hand side, Aragorn and Queen Arwen were on Eomer's right. At a nod that the Gondorians and their party were ready, the King of Rohan - at last - settled his helm upon his head. Unlike his Uncle, Eomer did not use the same 'kind' of Royal helm. It was the one he'd always had, with the white horse-tail streaming from the crest.

It had been slightly re-fashioned, however, to add a duplicate of Eomer's crown on the outside. With the jewels flashing in the sunlight, the King of Rohan glanced once more at Lothiriel, and then behind them.

Directly following would be the Women of the Court... the few maids and servants going for the night... the Royal Eóred, and then the three Marshalls leading their own Companies.

And then, raising his sword high, the King of Rohan pointed it in front of him.

"Forward Rohirrim!" Eomer cried, and as he smoothly resheathed it, spurred his stallion into a light canter.

Through the streets of Edoras they went, and once clear, turned Eastward across the Riddermark. Though they'd seen it before, the whole of Rohan's Capital city had turned out to watch, and listen to two thousand-plus sets of hooves going by...

She knew that they would facing many horrors on the battlefield she wanted to hold this picture of them strong and whole in her mind. She looked around for Rynan but she couldn't see him.

Ramo grinned and returned his embrace. With Namian's help she swung onto her toffee-colored horse. She rode by his side, wishing to spend every moment possible with her love. For some time conversation was impossible and she simply enjoyed the brisk morning air and the company. After a time the riders slowed and she nudged mer mount close to Firefox. She smiled at Namian and reached for his hand. "How thoughtful of Eomer King to allow me to come to the encampment. I made no preparations at all." Her eyes softened as they watched Namian. "I love you too."

(( OOC... ok... hope it's ok to post... ))

The day's ride was long, but for Eomer, to know Lothiriel was by his side this first day made the time fly. There was some chat between the four Royals... though Eomer almost wished that Aragorn and his Queen had gone on ahead of them so he could talk to Lothiriel just himself.

A short break at high sun they took... and then were once more on the move. When the Sun began setting behind them, though, the King of Rohan called the night's halt. Dropping to the ground, and though he knew Lothiriel was well capable, Eomer couldn't help but go over to help his wife from Anor's back.

With the swiftness of experience tents were set up, and warming fires lit against the night's chill. - And, to untrained eyes, the sight of seeing two thousand Rohirrim spread out between the Great West Road and the White Mountains was nearly as impressive as that of seeing them actually on the move.

As ever, Eomer was busy with duties... but he kept Lothiriel beside him for as much of it as he could. Catching a few minutes while their meal was being cooked, he took his wife in his arms for a quick hug. "How are you faring, my love?" he inquired anxiously... and for probably the two-dozenth time since they'd left Edoras...

**************************

Once he'd helped Ramo onto her horse's back, Namian settled his helm into place. With his heart flying to know she was coming along - at least that far, he swung up onto Firefox's in readiness to leave.

At the King's order, the host of Rohirrim moved out... and uncaring of 'where' he ought to be in his line, Namian kept his stallion on the outside... so he could ride next to his love.

For a time, and mostly to allow the horses to get their 'fidgets' out, they moved at a canter, but eventually, Eomer slowed them to a fast walk. There was much ground to cover - even this first day, and the young Rider was well aware the King knew how to save a horse's strength for when it was (truly) needed. - After all - without them, what would the Rohirirm be?

Yet, even before they'd slowed, it was often Namian's eyes strayed to meet Ramo's.
She smiled at Namian and reached for his hand. "How thoughtful of Eomer King to allow me to come to the encampment. I made no preparations at all." Her eyes softened as they watched Namian. "I love you too."

Squeezing his betrothed's hand back, and without letting go, the young Rider smiled back. "Don't worry!" he answered, and leaning closer, "I'll take care of you, Ramo!" Namian finished.

And, hoping this War would be a short one so he could be back soon to truly take care of her, he sighed deeply.

The day had been warm, traveling on horseback, but when they stopped for the night, a cold breeze swept down from the mountains. Seeing Ramo shiver from it, Namian swiftly pulled out his cloak and settled it around her shoulders. "I have a spare!" he assured her, and tenderly kissed her cheek.

Lothiriel sat warming up by the fire. She answered Eomer's embrace and replied, " I am fine, it is you I worry about." Her dark eyes searched his face. " I know you will come back to me, my heart tells me so. I only hope that it is unharmed and whole." She touched his face.

" A Elbereth Gilthoniel o menel palan-diriel, le nallon sí di-nguruthos! A tiro nin, Fanuilos!" she said softly. " It is an elvish petition to Elbereth. It means O Elbereth Star-kindler, from heaven gazing afar, to thee I cry now in the shadow of death! O watch over him, Everwhite!"

" Every day that you are gone I will await the sound of your horse's hooves. But do not fear for Rohan, I will hold it together to the best of my abilities until you return."

She took his hands in hers and continued,
"And when you return, we can start the life that should have been begun our wedding night. We can start a family, eventually, and rule together. To this I will look forward to."

Ramo tugged the cloak around her shoulders. "Thankyou Namian." She smiled at her fiancee. The thought struck her then. "Just think, when you return we'll be married!" She hugged him impulsively then pulled back blushing. "I will stay busy preparing a wedding dress. It will help me not to worry about you." She bit her lip and stared out at the horizon. "I wish you could promise me that you will come back. But if you failed to return . . . . " She broke off, tears filling her eyes. "I love you Namian but I'm scared to give you my heart. I don't want to be hurt again."
