"Robert."

The blonde boy gave a slight moan and shook his head.

"Robert."

A blue eyes popped open. "Luke?" he sat up and looked around. "Where are we?"

"With the army." Luke said with a slight laugh. "We made it."

Robert's eyes widened. Now that he was here, he had no idea what he was going to do. He had no formal training on how to fight...suddenly he felt nervous.

"Oh." he said quietly, looking away.

"Miss Joan?" Luke asked softly. Robert looked up startled. Luke smiled.

"You two were a little obvious." the theif stated. "Here." he pulled some writing things out of his leather pouch. "I've been meaning to give these to you for a bit...you can write, correct?"

"Yes..Father Timothy taught me." Robert eagrly took the tools from Luke. "Thank you..."

Luke grinned, reached out and tousled Robert's blonde hair. "Get to it kid. I'll be close by."

Standing, the red-head left Robert alone. The boy paused, trying to formulate exactly what he wanted to say, then began to pen a letter.

***

Philip smiled. "You may rise, Sir Stephen." he said quietly. "Your interruption is welcome if you brought more men." he added, somewhat in jest, although there was a tiredness behind his eyes.

Stephen stayed kneeling in front of the Prince. "I have no other men, but myself and a few others. I wish to offer you my service. I know it is not payment enough for the treachery of Sir Rafe, but I will do anything you ask of me. My men and I are loyal to the crown," he pledged, one hand over his heart and the other resting on the hilt of his sword.

Miki followed Luke and Robert to the camp site, but went off on his own as the two friends talked. He found a tree close to the camp and quickly climbed to the top-most branches. It always felt better up in a tree, where you could feel the sky.
But the doom of what lay ahead of him took away from the beauty of the view. Miki found himself searching the horizon, as if for the impending army, but there was nothing. He sighed and sat back in the tree, wishing that Mika wasn't so far away, and thinking about the battle to come as the stars winked to life in the sky. Before he knew it, Miki fell asleep up in the top branches of the tree.
But it was a restless sleep, full of dreams of war and fire, the worst was the one where he saw his comrades fall in front of him, but he could do nothing to help them, he was rooted to the spot, and Norway's army was still coming like a wave of death...
"Miki!" Someone called from below, jolting him out of his weak slumber. It was Stephen, he'd spotted the mage when a branch had nearly hit him on the head. "Come on, get down from there, the sun's almost up, and we need to get ready." Miki climbed down carfully, and joined Stephen, Luke and Robert.
"What do we do?" Miki asked.
~~~~~~~~~
Mika had been waiting while Aroura changed, but decided to go back to her room instead of going to dinner, courtiers were usually obnoxious people, and she wasn't really hungry anyway.
She flopped onto the window seat and rested her chin on the cold stone windowsill.
"I wish Miki weren't so far away," she mumbled to herself. "He better not be getting into trouble, or chasing after some poor girl..."
"Whose Miki?" someone asked from behind Mika. The dark-haired mage started and turned around to see Joan, holding a blanket over one arm. "Aroura told me this was your earlier, when we were unpacking," Joan said. "Thought I'd bring it to you."
"Thanks," Mika smiled, and gelped Joan lay out the big quilt on her bed. "Miki is my twin brother," Mika explained. "What about you Joan? Do you have a special someone?"
(((Gah, sorry for talking for your characters! Oh, and is it right that Mika would eat with the court? I'm not really sure about these things.:blush))
Rose sat at her dressing table going through the jewelry in her jewelry box. She fingered each and every one, trying to remember how she obtained them all. Most were from her late husband - family heirlooms. She began to wonder if she would ever pass on her own to any future daughter-in-laws.
She saw a pretty bracelet covered by a brooch toward the front of her box. She looked it over for a moment trying to rememeber where she got it from. It was rather unusual, very different from the rest of the items she had. The she remembered. It was given to her by 2 maiges (am I right?) of the palace not that long ago. They had told her that it would tell her when someone was lying or telling untruths (am I right?). If only she had remembered it a few weeks back - it would have certainly come in handy.
She grasped the bracelet and moved it into a drawer, so nobody could find it.
She looked over the jewellery again. If Denmark need money for their army, and it was quite possible, she might be forced to sell a lot of it. She would be sad to part with it, but if worst came to worst, she would prepare herself.
She now prayed that England's forces would come in time ...
She looked at Mika closely, not knowing what to answer. Her heart ached to say Robert, but her head seemed to know better than that.
"No, there is no one special. Though I do sorely miss my family. I should write to dear Sir Rupert, he has been so kind to us. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be serving Lady Aurora."
Aurora ate silently trying to gather courage to ask the King about troops for Denmark. The King beat her to it.
"You will be pleased to know My Lady, that troops will sail in the morning to aid our new allies. Alittle after they have sailed our main army will follow."
"My home is forever in your debt your Majesty."
The meal ended and Aurora returned to her rooms for the evening. She dressed down into a simple shift and let her hair fall down her back. She fell to her knees and prayed thanking God for answering her prayers and also asking Him if she had done all he wanted of her.
"I have done this for love of my father and my country but have I done what you have wanted of me? Is this what I was ment to do?"
She reached out to Mary for comfort and continued to pray hoping to find some meaning behind her actions and some answer to her questions. All the while her thoughts kept going back to Phillip in all sorts of ways. The last words he said to her, the thought of him fighting and hoping he was safe, and the realization that she did love him. Whether by Divine intervention or just her commonsence she could not tell but she realized that somhting was wrong.
"I have made a mistake."
She frantically rose to her feet and reached for her bell but froze just before she pulled it. It was now about midnight and the castle was asleep. If she woke them it would be another mistake. She went to the door that connected her's and Mika's room. The mage was still awake but meditating. Aurora would have waited untill she was finished had the situation been different.
"Mika, hurry wemust find me some clothes and armour. Tomorrow I sail with the soldiers."
"Aurora are you sure that is wise. I would advise against it."
"Mika my place is with my people. I will go with or without you help, but without will be harder."
The mage nodded and began muttering something. She had Aurora fetch two of her gowns and bring them to the room. Laying her hands on one of them still speaking the Mage turned the dress into the clothes of a boy. Taking the other dress she began to chant. She took a posion from her sleeve and poured it on the dress. With a final word the dress became a suit of armour. Quickly Aurora changed into the boys clothes and put her armour on the bed.
"Are you sure about this?" Mika asked, worried, watching her friend change into the boy's clothes. Aroura nodded solemly as she pulled the tunic over her head. Mika sighed.
"Well i know i can't talk you out of something you've set your mind on," she huffed, getting up off the bed. " But I know one thing, I'm not letting you go out there alone, Phillip would never forgive me if you got hurt." She traced a circle with the heel of her shoe on the floor and stepped into it. With a few words, her black dress quickly changed into a boy's tunic and breeches. "If you go into this battle, so do I."
Philip nodded. "Your loyalty means much." he said quietly. "Thank you for it." Philip stepped forward and put a hand on the other man's shoulder. "Go now and get your men a place to rest. Tomorrow may be hard."
Aurora smiled sadly and gave Mika a hug.
"I must leave a note for Joan. I will be right back."
She hurried back into her room and by the light of one small candle she began writing a farewell note to Joan.
Dearest Joan
By the time you read this I will be on my way back to Denmark. I realize that my place during this fight is there and not here. I go to battle. It is a secret I share only with you. Keep this note close to you and let no other read it. For if they knew I have gone in this fashion I will be hunted down and brought back in a way that would bring shame to our people.
You have served me well for the short amount of time I have known you. I thank you for that for you have been most valuble. If you do not hear from me within a month I give you leave to release yourself from my service for it means I am either wounded or dead.
She paused for a moment realizing the danger she was really in. But she would stil go.
I remain your dear friend.
Aurora
She put the note on her pillow and made her bed. She knew that Joan would find it there. It was almost light when she returned to Mika's room. The Mage held two swords in her hands.
"We will need these."
They gathered their things and hurried down to the docks. The men were loading onto the ship. They fell into line. Aurora noticed that their armor was different from the other men. She would stand out. That was both good and bad.
Once below decks she and Mika found a bunk far in the corner.
"Take off your helmat."
Aurora did and instantly, Mika took her hair and cut it off. She trimmed it up and then looked Aurora over.
"I can't tell the difference any more."
They felt the ship pull away from the dock.
"well," MIka sighed. "My turn." She , who did not have aurmor, had hidden her hair beneath a cap, and now let it loose. Her raven hair, while not as beautiful or luxurious as Aroura's hair had been, was much longer, reaching almost past her knees. It was also the only way of really telling Mika and Miki apart. Though she would not tell anyone, Mika found her hair as the only beautiful thing about her. She closed her eyes, and with one quick slash of the knife, her hair fell inot her hand. Aroura helped her trim the edges, then smiled sadly at Mika.
"Now there'll be no telling you and Miki apart," she said quietly. Mika smiled back at her friend, then brought her head down to rest on Aroura's shoulder.
"I'm scared," MIka whispered to her friend. "BUt we are doing the right thing, aren't we? We can do this, can't we Aroura? And I don't mean just us pulling off this masquraede; Denmark can win, can't we? I just can't see anything any more."
(OOC: I like where this is going!!!)
Rose was left with only five advisors, out of the usual eleven. Lord Rupert had gone to war, because he had skill and knowledge. The other five we all at an age where they would be able to fight, and also had suitable experience and knowledge. The five left behind were all relatively old, too old to fight. They all had experience, but their bodies were worn and tired, so would prove rather useless in battle. Because of their ages, Rose felt she was in rather dull company and missed those that had gone to war - all in (or around) her age group.
"We still have no heard from England, Your Majesty," Lord Harrington announced in a dull voice.
"Yes, I know," Rose answered in a rather bored tone of voice.
"What do you plan to do?"
"Erm..."
"Your Majesty, where is your mind! Concentrate! The country depends on you! We might as well give into Norway ..."
"I beg your pardon, how dare you raise your voice to me and think such things!" Rose yelled.
"Your Majesty, His Lordship is right!" Another spoke up.
"How dare you, you ... you ..." Rose stammered, trying to think what to say.
With that, the council broke into heated argument. Rose stamped out of the room, too furious to remain the room. She headed out into the gardens to walk off her anger.
"This will not do," she said to herself, "The governing members cannot argue like this! Not when we are at war! The country is in enough trouble as it is! Why do they seem to think we would be better under Norwegion rule?"
She returned to the council chambers to find the room empty. She had been deserted. She fled down the corridors, trying to find the councilers - they would not have gone far.
"Please your Majesty, they have gone ... gone to Norway ..." Martha, Rose's personal maid caught up behind her.
"What?"
"They have left M'am. I overheard them. They have deserted Denmark ... for Norway!"
"Why ... why ... do they lack that much confidence in Denmark? It looks like I am left to govern Denmark by myself. What I fear now is, will the rest of the country react like the council has done?"
Stephen had settled down under the tree after he located Luke and Robert. The sun was weakly leaking through the dark when the morning calls were being made. Stephen jumped to attention, alert and ready for the day, even though he had a rough night tossing and turning. He nudged Luke and Robert awake.
"It's time to get up and prepare for our march. If we are lucky, we may even get a bite of breakfast," he said.
They quickly scrambled awake at the sound of breakfast.
On their way towards the center of the camp, a large branch fell out of a tree, neatly missing Stephen by a few inches. He looked up and found Miki nestled high among the branches. He called up and moments later, Miki deftly shimmied down the tree. "What do we do?" he asked.
"We're grouping at the commander's tent to wait for orders. We'll have to be armed and ready to march at a moment's notice. Our commanding officer will direct us. Although I don't know who that is," Stephen said.
They reached the cookfires and were handed a piece of bread and a bit of cheese. They were also each allowed a mug of tea.
"Not much of a breakfast," Luke mumbled, but shot a cheeky grin when Stephen scowled at him.
"You'll be glad to find this much on the battlefield," Stephen answered. He looked around the camp and sighed. He had the same impression of the army this morning as he had last night - they were unorganized. Men were clustered here and there, milling around looking lost and useless or happily toasting their bread and cheese over a fire. The officers were probably in a tent somewhere going over strategy, but not a one was to be found giving directions or even trying to organize the men into regiments.
"Just look at this mess. These men don't look like they're going to war. If we look like this on the battlefield, we might as well surrender."
******************
Lady Cassandra and Lord and Lady Winters were on their way to the palace to meet with the king of Norway. Elaine was accompanying them there to meet that man Lady Cassandra had been talking about. He was some knight or other.
They had set out early and had reached the palace in the early morning. The lord and ladies were escorted into a large and luxurious waiting room, while Elaine and the other attendants were ushered into another smaller room near the kitchens.
Elaine pretended to walk around the room, but really was looking for a quiet corner far away from the other people so she could use her mirror. She settled on a window seat and half pulled the velvet hangings around her to shield herself from view.
Feeling she was secure enough, she pulled out her mirror and frantically whispered "Miki! Miki!" When his face appeared, she rushed through her words. "I'm in Norway with Lady Cassandra! She's meeting with the king right now. And I think they're forcing me to wed some knight here as some alliance between herself and Norway. She even bribded the coastguard to let her pass. What shall I do?"
Aurora and Mika spent the entire voyage below decks. They did not bother anyone and no one bothered them.
"Form up!"
Aurora looked at Mika. The mage was pale. "We've arrived."
She and Mika disembarked following and being followed by the few men that had come. A man and several hundred horses waited for them.
"Captain." He said addressing the leader. "England is glad to see you and hopes that you will use these horses to ride in haste to our camp."
The Captain agreed and the horses were distributed. The entire force mounted up and rode away from the docks. Aurora rode close to Mika.
They were in the camp within the hour, taking the back way around the Norwegian forces. Tents had been set up in on sector of the camp for the new comers. The Captain himself was taken immediately to meet Phillip.
Aurora looked around and smiled at seeing people she knew. It made her sad aswell as she could not tell them who she was. The men were divided into pairs and showed to the tents. Mika grabbed Aurora's arm and did not let go untill they were in the tent.
"I didn't want there to be a chance of us being split. Now let's get you out of that."
Both of them worked to get Aurora out of her armor so she could move more freely.
*******
Henry sent for Aurora after the knights had left. He wanted to give her the news of their departure and hopefully make up for his harshness to her. He turned at the sound of hurried footsteps only to see the servent he had sent returning.
"My Lord, she is gone."
Henry's eyes flashed. Without a word he stormed down the hall to his parent's chambers and banged on the door. His father was barely able to get out an 'enter' before he hurried in and slammed the door.
"Aurora is gone."
"What?"
"She is missing. No one can find her."
Immediately the King sent out servents to find her.
********
Rupert looked with pity upon the prince. The boy was so lost. The moment was disturbed by voices outside and then by two men entering.
"My Lords, Captain Garrett of England."
The other man stepped forward and bowed.
Rupter and Phillip beemed knowing what the man's arrival ment.
(I don't have a plan for any specific person to be the captain when he meets with Phillip so just do both sides of the conversation.
Miki quickly fumbled for the mirror in his pocket during breakfast, knowing Elaine was trying to contact him.
"NOrway?" He sputtered, once she had delivered her message. "MArraige?! Slow down, slow down, it's alright. IS there any way you get get over here?" MIki asked, Elaine bit her lip and shook her head.
"HOld on a minute," a voice sadi from behind Miki, he looked up to see Stephen watching Elaine in the mirror as well. "What do you mean marriage?" Elaine blushed.
"sorry Stephen but I don't think we've got time for this," Miki told the knight, then turned back to the mirror.
"I'm not sure what we can do right now," MIki said. "Just stall this wedding as best as you can and try to get LAdy Cassandra to come back to Denmark, alright? If you find out anything, or find a way back to NOrway, contact me alright?" ELaine nodded in the mirror. Something in Elaine's hair caught Miki's eye, it was a hair pin, a simple one, with a small pearl in the middle, pearls, pearls, the had been a spell done with pearls or maybe was it seashells...? Miki's eyes lit up as he remembered.
"Elaine," he said in to the mirror. "I think i've got a way to get you over hear, but it may be a while. FInd a large body of water alright? I'll be in touch." Elaine nodded and Miki let the mirror's image fade.
"what are you talking about? HOw in the world are we gonna get Elaine all the back here from NOrway?" Luke asked.
"Well, it's a spell," Miki explained. "But it's gonna take a lot of effort and a lot of time..."
"Which we don't have right now," Robert sighed, Miki nodded his agreement.
"And besides, if we brought Elaine here now, she'd have to stay with the army," Luke added.
"once teh fighting is done, or at least subsided," Miki continued. "We could bring her over, but I would need your help, what do you think?"
All throughout the hallways there were whispers among the servants as Joan passed.
"I heard she ran away, because she didn't love Master Henry..."
"I heard that her maid murdered her because she wanted to marry Henry..."
"Well now that that Dane is out of the way, Henry can marry whomever he wants..."
Joan got the sickly feeling that something was wrong and burst into Lady Aurora's chambers, declaring loudly:
"You'll never imagine what they're saying about you out...."
To her dismay she found that neither Lady Aurora nor Mika were there and the bed had been made. Upon the pillow she found a note and though she could not read, Joan recognized the 'J'.
She hurried to find John Steward, for she knew he was a learned man and could read the note to her. She found him in the library, book in hand. He had not heard her come in and jumped when she called his name.
"Yes girl, is there something I can help you with?" he asked.
"Could you...could you read me this note? I never learned how to read. I could spell my letters, so that I could calculate the grain and all, but I never knew how to spell. I would just make up signs that I remembered and could associate to a certain thing..." She stopped, realising that she had been babbling and handed him the note.
"So the pretty girl has a name, and a lovely one at that," he said, smiling while he opened the letter and read it to her.
When he was done a heavy silence stood in the room, each of them too overwhelmed by the contents of the letter to say a word. All too soon Joan realised the seriousness of the matter and quickly decided what she should do.
"You cannot tell anyone what you have just read," she said, snatching the letter and throwing it into the fire before continuing. "You must promise me never to repeat what you have read, on pain of death. If you tell anyone else what Lady Aurora has done, it will be the end of us both and probably her as well. But I'll need your help."
He nodded and followed her to Aurora's rooms.
"Help me get this dress on, quickly now!" She started removing her maid's outfit and was soon in her shift. John approached her coutiously with the dress, as if he were half afraid.
"Are there no maids who could help you...?" he asked and helped her pull the dress over her head.
"I do not want to get anyone else involved, it would put us all in more danger."
He laced up the corset very tightly and slipped on her bodice. She almost looked like Aurora, except her hair.
"Get me that net," she demanded. As she toyed with her hair to get it all in the net John looked at her in the mirror.
"I've half a mind to address you as Lady Aurora Joan, you look stunning."
"Well you had better address me as such, or else they'll put your head next to mine on that pike!"
She was becoming irritable with him due to the fact that she had to once again dress up as a courtier, and this time it was not just to attend a ball, she might have to marry Henry. But when she looked in the mirror, she really did see Lady Aurora, and not Joan, which gave her a certain amount of confidance.
They left the chambers and made their way to their royal Majesties quarters. The whole place seemed in an uproar as Joan came, but soon all eyes settled on her and John Steward, waiting for an explaination.
"I beg your pardon my Royal Majesties, I went for a walk with Master Steward in the gardens and forgot to notify anyone of where I was going." She curtsied and hoped they would not see through her ruse.
((Muahahahahaha, this is fun!))
(OOC: *claps* Very good M! ^__^ I applaud thee! )
Robert shrugged unsurely. In his hand was a belt and sword he had been issued; the boy was still nervous about using them in an actual battle.
Luke, thought for a moment, then spoke. "I'd say go for it." he said. "Better to have her here than there, I'd say."
***
Philip and the English captain exchanged greetings, then got down to business. What they knew of the Norway army was put on the table.
"Do you have any plans?" Garrett asked.
"We still have a small dock here." Philip pointed to an area on the map. "Hopefully, supplies will be able to get through here. But beyond that..." the prince sighed. "At first, Norway was simply too powerful for us to go head to head. But with the infusion of your men, we may be able to battle. I believe that any sort of trap will not be advisable; They are backed by the sea."
The captain nodded.
(Lyrav, I'd like for Stephen to be made a commander, so if you can help me towards that, it'd be good.)
Aurora decided that she didn't want to stay in her tent untill they were forced into action. To her that seemed suspicioud. She looked at Mika who was asleep from exhaustion and knew that she would get a lecture from her when she returned. Shrugging this off Aurora left the tent and went around the camp. She passed by the command tent just as Phillip and the captain came out. For a moment she paused and looked at Phillip. He looked so different than when she had left. There was a weariness to his face and all happiness seemed to have vanished. She took pity on him and wanted with all her heart to let him know she was there. But she knew she couldn't and so she continued on not looking back.
(I'll try my best for Stephen, Jaid!)
Stephen was still stunned that Elaine was in Norway, but agreed with Luke that it was best to get her back over in Denmark. Miki quickly put away the mirror and was scanning the crowds. Stephen eyed Robert uneasily. He'd looked funny when they'd seen Elaine in Miki's mirror and found out she was in Norway. Right now he was toying with the sowrd at his belt, unconsciously unsheathing and resheathing the blade in its scabbard. Stephen reminded himself yet again that he'd keep a close eye on Robert - when he had the time to do so.
It was now late morning, heading into the afternoon, and still nothing was happening. He was anxious to fight. In fact, he was anxious to do anything, instead of standing idly by hopelessly waiting to be attacked. The commanders still had not left their tent, and Stephen realized he was more than a little annoyed at their lack of organization. So he'd do something about it.
"Will you guys help me out? I'm going to try to find out who everyone's commander is and then place them in ranks of 100," Stephen asked of his friends.
"Sure. No problem," answered Luke.
"Just have all the men under the same commander stand together. Those without a commander, place them together. And make sure every man is armed in some way - a sword, bow and arrow, whatever. I'll come around in a little while and section the men off. Right now l'm going to see how many mounts we have, and speak to the cavalry unit."
Each man went their own way, and Stephen located where the horses were tethered. He spoke to the guard watching them and got a vague figure of the number of horses. But at least the man was able to point out who the cavalry were and what they were wearing.
Stephen shouted out some orders to the men and they reluctanly followed them. They stood in straight files and Stephen came around to inspect their gear. They were fortunately well-equipped, and only a handful needed a sharpened blade. He went with them to inspect their horses, and found not a few problems. There was something to be fixed, to be mended, to be oiled, and soon all the men had their hands full of work.
Stephen left them to take care of the horses, and was going to see how Luke and Robert and Miki had organized the men. He passed by the commanders tent, when the Prince and a captain came out. Stephen saluted them and was going to walk past, when they called him over.
************************
Elaine listened as Miki told her of his plan to bring her back to Denmark. Well, actually she had no idea how he was going to do it, and could not even imagine how her standing by a large body of water would do anything. But she trusted him and his magic.
She just hoped Stephen would not be there. It was embarrassing enough to have him find out she was in Norway and was on the verge of being married off to some man she didn't even know. And as if she did not have enough problems worrying about that, she had no idea how she would find her way to the coast in the middle of the night. The palace was miles away and so was the other house they'd stayed in the night before.
She slipped the mirror back into her pocket - and just in time, for the door opened and the servant was asking for her. Elaine jumped off the window seat and followed the servant. She asked him where they were going, but he did not answer. After a few turns down the halls, he led her into a small, but prettily furnished sitting room. He motioned for her to be seated and left the room, closing the door behind him.
Wondering what was going to happen now, the door opened and a young man entered the room. He was pleasing to look at with fair brown hair and warm brown eyes. She noticed at once that he walked with the bearing of a soldier.
He smiled and bowed to her. "My lady Elaine, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. You are as beautiful as they say," he said gallantly.
"Thank you. But you have the advantage of knowing my name. What is yours?" she asked a little suspiciously.
"Yes, you are right. I am Sir Brogan. I believe your lady Cassandra may have mentioned me to you?"
She just stared. So this was the man that they wanted to marry her off to. She was really curious why the daughter of an impoverished noble would be a political match. "Yes," she stammered, blushing, "Lady Cassandra may have mentioned you. But could you refresh my memory?"
"I believe that the plan is for us to marry," he told her bluntly.
"Yes, but why?" she demanded.
"Unfortunately we are just bargaining chips for the king and your lady."
Aurora found herself wondering in circles. She was now back infront of the royal tent. Phillip, the captain, and a young boy were standing outside talking. As she watched them someone ran into her knocking her into the group. Growing suddenly fearful of them finding out who she was she stepped back.
"I am sorry sirs, my lord." she bowed her head at Phillip not looking at his face. The captain seemed annoyed but Phillip brushed it aside.
"Do not worry about it. I am sure it was just an accident."
She nodded.
"What is your name?"
Aurora thought for a moment, she hadn't even considered that.
"William." She raised her eyes and looked into his. "My name is William."
"Well William it appears you English will be getting into a fight sooner than you expected."
"I could wish for nothing more my lord." Her throat began to itch from speaking so low.
Philip smiled at the young man who seemed nervous. He nodded. "You may go on your way now, William." he said. The young man bowed and quickly walked away. Philip stared after him for a moment, wondering why the young man seemed familiar, then shook himself and turned to Stephen.
"Tell me, Sir Stephen, do you have any experience in commanding a group of men? You may have noticed the lack of order in our ranks. I'm afraid that many of Norway's captains were either too old for a war or have betrayed us." The prince's smile had become wry.
***
Robert blew out a breath. He had organized a contigent like Stephen had directed; most of "his" men were farmers or such and were willing to listen to anyone who seemed to know what they were doing; even if it was a sixteen year old stableboy who looked too femenine for his own good.
***
Luke crossed his arms as he walked through his group, making sure weapons and equipment were properly cared for. Stephen had told him what to look for and even Robert had given him some tips on equipment as well.
Miki was trying to organize the men he had been assigned to by Stephen, by they weren't really cooperating.
'you're a might young to be leadin' an army," a tall, burly man said to Miki, the mage just sighed and tried to ignore him, but the man poked him in back, hard.
"Why don't you go home to your mum and save us the trouble?" The man taunted. Miki, fed up with it, whirled around, his eyes blazing. With one word, the man was picked off his feet about three feet in the air, and was then sent toppling to the ground.
'unless you'd like to end up dead or worse out on that battlefield, I suggest you follow someone, and since I'm one of the few not running around like a chicken with my head cut off, I'd think you better cooperate," Miki said, a chilly edge to his voice. THe big man grumbled as he rose to his feet, but went to join the rest of the men from his town.
This is going to be a long day Miki thought.
~~~~~~~
Mika woke up suddenly, her eyes snapping openas if she'd been jarred awake from a terrifing dream.
"Aroura?" she mumbled as she rose, but the girl wasn't there. Mika sighed in exasperation. "Oh, if she's and got herself in trouble, I'm going to kill her..." she grumbled as pulled her tunic over the black shirt she wore. She was about the step out of the tent when Aroura stepped back in.
"And where have you been?" Mika asked

Stepehn did not know what to say when Prince Philip asked him to become a commander. "My lord, I've only been knighted less than a year. I may have taken the liberty to try to organize the men a little, but I don't think I have the knowledge to command a full army unit."

"You have done an admirable job from what I am seeing at the moment," Philip answered.

Stephen turned to look at what the Prince was talking about. The army had quieted down immensely. He could see groups of men beginning to form and the shiny glint of sharpened steel and polished armor.

"In that case, your highness, I will accept your offer. The other knights under Lady Cassandra are also skilled in battle. We all have worked closely with Sir Rafe and know some of his mind. We may find a way to defeat Norway yet," Stephen said, with a bright look of hope in his eyes. "I must now go and see to the men." With a short bow he went in search of Luke, Robert, and Miki.

He spotted Robert standing among a large group of roughly-clad men. They all looked to be laborers, not the palace guard.

"Robert, what of these men?" he asked.

"None of these men have a comannder. They are just everyday workers who have joined up to fight against Norway," Robert reported.

"Are they armed at all?" he asked looking around.

"Most of them only with axes and the like. Some haven't even held a sword before. But those weapons they do have are in good condition."

"The armorer is over there near the cookfire. Tell him to find some kind of weapon and some type of protection to give to these good men. I will get a couple of soldiers to assist you."

Stephen called over a couple guards he knew from the palace and asked them to help Robert arm the men.

He then went searching for Luke and found to his relief a good sized group of men, well armed and well organized.

"Well done Luke. Who are these men under?"

"I'm not sure, but they formed up pretty quickly and easily when I asked them to."

"Their commander may be among some of the older men who have lost hope in Denmark and have chosen to side with Norway. The Prince doesn't look too well. He has asked me to become a commander. What do you think of that?"

"Well done yourself. You're moving up in the ranks."

"Anyway since things look to be in order here, you might want to help Robert in handing out some weapons to the men. I'll go and find Miki.

Stephen spotted Miki standing among a crowd of unruly men. They were all reluctantly standing in formation, but not without a few insults thrown here and there at the mage. But Miki was standing his ground very admirably.

"Form up men, and not another word," Stephen shouted. They began to grumble, but quieted when they saw his rank as a knight and slowly shuffled into a more organized state. When they were prefectly lined up and straightened, Stephen turned to Miki.

"What do you want to do with them?"

"Throw the lot of them into the ocean," Miki said.

Stephen chuckled. "I'll take over from here, but you could see if the Prince or his counselors want any assistance. Your magic could come be very useful at a time like this."

As more duties were being delegated to men of higher ranks, Stephen saw that the army was slowly becoming something to be feared. There were thousands of men lined up and ready to go.

Just when things were looking up, a shiver went up Stephen's spine. He heard the faint sounds of a battle horn ringing in the air.

(Sorry it's so long - I wanted to get things moving. I hope y'all don't mind my talking for your characters. And do you guys want the fighting to begin yet?)

Before she could answer Mika all the men were called out to get formed up. Aurora stood among the other men of the army. In front of them she saw the boy who had been with Phillip when she was there.Apparently he had taken charge of the forces.
"Soldiers! The horn of war has sounded. Now comes the time for us to defend our lands and we will be victorious!"
Aurora gulped nervousely she did not think the fighting would begin so soon. Just then Phillip and her father were beside the boy. Phillip nodded to Sir Rupert who spoke to the men.
"Men, his highness and I have devised a plan to retake the coast. Tonight a surprise asult wil be made on Hanbrim our main dock just to the north of us. Secrecy is everything. Our presence must go unknowtist for the attack to succeed." He did not want to mention the note of anyone who did anything to give away their position would be taken prisoner and hanged. He hoped it would not come to that.
"I leave them to you." Phillip said to the boy just before he and Rupert rode away.
"Alright form lines." The suffled into positions. "Right now move out!"
The line started to move. Aurora could not find Mika anywhere near her but she did not worry. Mika could take care of herself. She knew it.
After a bit her feet just automatically moved. There were men about her complaining, many asking why they couldn't ride to the docks but that answer was already there. Horses would give them away. If they took the dock surely the horses would be brought in.
Slowly the lights of Hanbrim came into view and the small village stood as a looming shadow against the dark morning.

(It's shortly after midnight, just to clear up any confusion. Lyrav I think that Robert, Stephen, Luke and Aurora (william) should hook up. Get more interaction between the character. And MLG and Van if you to can think up some way to arrive back here later, say Elizabeth finds out Joan is really Joan, and bring Henry with you.)

(Hi guys, sorry for the delay in replying ... but I'm not really sure what to write right now. The Queen has no occupation...)

Her advisors has left her. She was all alone...

The palace seemed so empty now. Courtiers rarely strolled the halls anymore. Most men were gone - at war or elsewhere. Servents remained, but they wouldn't for very long - money was getting tight. This war was going to take as much as it could.

Rose dressed in older, uglier clothes and wandered into the village. She made sure no one would be able to recognise her.

"The English have arrived! The war begins soon!" she heard someone shout.

Not wanting to hang around much longer, she fled back to the palace. She never thought she would have to leave the palace grounds to hear this news.

She went into the gardens, and began to think of her son. Why had he not written to her? Was he really that busy? She hoped the other reason playing through her mind wasn't what it really was...

(Sorry it's short, but I haven't a lot of time!)

Norway was here and ready to fight. Stephen called all the men together and they made ready to march. A covert group of men were riding towards the coast trying to regain the docks and block any incoming Norwegian ships.

Stephen looked around, the men looked nervous, but grim and determined to fight. He spotted the young man who had stumbled into the Prince when they were speaking earlier. He looked so young and vulnerable. "You there," he called, "Come up and fight besides me. When in need of courage, fight beside those who have more courage than they can bear."

The boy came up to stand next to him. "It may be a rag-tag army, but we are strong and will be victorious," Stephen said, sweeping his arm to encompass the entire army, but also to beckon over Luke, Robert, and Miki who had come up.

"What is your name?"

"William," he said.

"Then let's march on!"

*****************

Rafe and his men charged up the hill with a roar. The cavalry was riding in the lead. All the men were armed with a sword and a shield. The archers and foot soldiers were marching from behind.

But Rafe spit at the ground in disgust. Greeve had waited too long to begin, and had given Denmark enough time to get their soldiers ready. This would not be an attack of surprise - it would have to be a full-out battle.

He saw them coming over the ridge. They were marching in neat formations, with their pikemen and archers in the first string. He almost laughed out loud - half of these men were villagers and day-laborers, including young men and boys. It would be an easy victory. And Rafe did not have the time or inclination to feel guilty over fighting in such lopsided conditions.

Arrows rang out at a shouted order, and all was chaos.

(Good intro for the fighting? )

(OOC: Seems good to me)

Robert squared his shoulders as they came upon Norway's army. He felt so many things at once; scared and proud, worried and hopefull all at once. His hand tightened around the hilt of his sword. He glanced over at Luke, who shot him a crooked grin, as if to say, 'What have we gotten ourselves into?' Robert smiled back and shook his head.

'I don't know, my friend.' he thought. 'I don't know...'

***

Philip rode with the group who would try to retake the docks. Lord Rupert was with the main army. All there was to do now was hope and pray. Philip hoped that the letter he had sent his mother before riding out would reach her soon.

At last, a letter had come for her from Philip.

Mother,

We ride now into war. I do not know what will happen, but I swear to you - I will do my best to prevent Denmark falling into the clutches of evil, Norway.

I want you to know that I love you, my dear Mama, with all of my heart. I will be thinking of you as I go now, into battle.

May God be with us,
Your Son,

Philip

Rose held the note tenderly, thinking of Philip. The fighting had now begun.

*****
Ernest went into battle with much courage, but some regret. He was doing what he wanted - fighting to conquer Denmark. But there was something pressing on his mind that he would never forgive himself for...hurting Rose.

Over the short period of time, he had fallen in love with her but had to give up that love for that of Norway. He had treated her so badly, he wished he could erase that fact.

This pressed on and on in his mind, slowly starting to drive him mad. At once, he turned his horse away from his army, going the opposite way.

"Cartwright, where on earth do you think you are going?!" Rafe yelled at him.

"I need to take care of something!" he yelled back.

"Traitor!" Rafe returned, just as Ernest was out of earshot.

There is something I simply must do...he thought, as he headed back towards the palace, and away from the war...

The lights of the village glowed in the distance as the collumn moved on. Aurora could hear the faint sounds of the Norwegian army moving about the streets; armor clanking, heavy footfalls as they marched, the whinny of horses. Suddenly she found herself turning her head to see the village as her horse and about 100 others veird away from the main collumn. She looked at Sir Stephen confussed.
"Where are we going My Lord?"
"Around. We will attack from the rear and once are inside the village the rest of the army will attack from the front."
Aurora only knodded she knew nothing of the tactics of war. The small party stopped just outside the boarders of the village. A fog decended about them concealing their presence.
"They say that this area is haunted." A boy said next to her. "By the ancient Norse men who sailed west from their homeland." Aurora saw that the boy was Robert.
"What happened to them?" she asked quietly.
"They sailed to far south and crashed into the cliffs and reefs just below us. And the rest of their ships ran aground just beyond the village."
"Let's move forward." Stephen said and then waved his arm to the rest of the party. They walked ahead, the moist ground dampening the sound of their horses steps. Stephen and the rest of the Danes pulled out cross bows and rested them on the front of their saddles. The few English that were there drew their swords metal screaching against metal. The sound made everyone wince. but nothing came of it. Stephen looked at the sword in Aurora's hand.
"Stay by me and that weapon will be of more use beside a bow."
She heard the pride in his voice. He seemed so assured of victory that her doubt seemed out of place.
A cry came from the village, something muffled like "The Danes!"
Stephen raised his hand and shouted clearly "Charge!".
The whole collumn lurched forward into a hard gallop. Within seconds they were in the streets surrounded by the enemy. A clear horn sounded and in the distance the rumbling of horses hooves came nearer. The Danes let loose their cross bows into the crowd and hit several Norwegians. Fear over took Aurora and she slashed at a man coming near her with an ax.
"A good start." Stephen said. She had completely forgotten that he was beside her.
They held their ground as more and more enemies swept upon them. But still there was no sighn of Phillip. The rumbling had stopped but now there were sounds of another battle at the other end of the Village.
"Stephen! We can't stay here much longer. We are being over run." Luke shouted.
Aurora saw Stephen look around wildly. Then he gave the order to pull back.

*******

At the sound of the horn Phillip and Rupert charged ahead followed by their collumn. But right as they reached the village they were met by a line of ready Norse men. Arrows flew from either side and many men fell but the Danes could not get past the line. Rupert shouted to the Prince. "We can not win here! Their line is to strong! We must regroup with Sir Stephen and try again!" Phillip looked about not wanting to retreat so soon but knew there was no other choice, they were over run.
"Pull back!" He shouted and turned riding out of the village.
Behind him he heard the jeering cheers of the Norwegian army. Their shouts hit his heart and that of Rupert wounding their pride.

Philip felt the bitter taste of defeat in his mouth as they returned to camp. Stephen and the English captain were waiting as Philip dismounted.

"We have lost our element of surprise." Garrett said calmly. Philip nodded, a little shortly.

"I know." he said. "We underestimated their readiness." The prince sucked in a breathe, unsure and suddenly more bewildered than before, though he strove not to show it. Think, he need to think of something! His people were depending on him! He closed his green eyes.

***

Robert and the others had arrived back at camp with Stephen. Robert helped the few that were wounded get to the medical tent and checked on some of the farmers he knew were not used to swords yet. After that, he found himself alone and his legs gave way, depositing him on the dusty ground.

So that had been a battle. Robert brushed his forehead, only to realize that sticky, half dried blood was on it. He didn't remember getting wounded...with a sick feeling, Robert wondered if it were from one of the men he had helped or one of the men he had killed.

"Hey." Robert looked up to see Luke and Miki, accompanied by the young man named William. "You all right?"

Robert smiled. "Yeah...just a little shocked."

Luke grinned and pulled him up. "I think we all were. Miki was walking like a drunk man a few minutes ago."

The mage gave Luke a mock glare. "Look who is talking." he stated and Luke laughed aloud. Robert still smiled, but inwardly, he was worried. They had pulled back; what would happen now? Would Norway follow them? Would Denmark try another attack? The boy didn't know...

(OOC: Hey, anybody have any idea for Robert being knighted? lol, I figured he ought to do something pretty heroic; to get the notice of Phiip or Lord Rupert. It'd be a shame if he was still a stableboy after this was all over!)

(Maybe Robert can save Phillip's life by rescuing him before an attack? Or saving Aurora's life somehow?)

*********

This war was too easy, Rafe thought to himself. He watched with satisfaction as the Danes retreated hastily to regroup. They had thought to take him by surprise, but they were wrong. There were more reinforcements from Norway coming over the next morning and by then they'd be able to capture the throne.

Rafe sent a dispatch of a hundred men to ride after the Danes and cut down any stragglers. The rest of the men camped down in a clearing in the forest. There was good protection there, and it was high up enough that they could spot any incoming attackers. Another hundred men rode down to the docks to fortify their ranks and make sure any attempts to retake the coast, by Denmark, were turned away.

There was a council meeting, but Rafe was staying away for the moment. He'd eaten a hasty meal and settled himself under a tall tree, a little away from the camp to think. That traitor Cartwright had ridden away at the start of the fight towards the castle. Rafe had no idea what he was up to, but it was definitely not soemthing good.

But what troubled him the most was wondering if Cartwright would be forgiven by the Queen and the country. The battle hadn't gone very far, so there was still hope for this forgiveness. Rafe wasn't even sure if he was thinking about Cartwright or about himself. He had to remind himself again that he would never ask pardon from anyone ever.

He got up wearily and headed towards Greeve's tent. They would have to discuss the next day's strategy.

***************

The sun had sank already, leaving a blood red sky that was soon turning into night. Stephen was consulting with the Prince and his advisors.

"We have lost our element of surprise." Garrett said calmly.

They would have to try something different the next day if they were to be successful.

"Norway is sure to have more reinforcements coming in tomorrow. As it is we are already outnumbered," Stephen said. He hesitated, trying to think of how Rafe would be thinking. Rafe was cunning in his fighting. He fought outright, showing his might, but underneath he held something back. There had to be a weakness somewhere.

"Have you any news about the docks?" he asked.

***********

Elaine and Sir Brogan were left together for quite some time. If it seemed out of the ordinary, Elaine put it down to their "upcoming marriage." She had to get away. Tonight. She did not care at all what happened to Lady Cassandra when she was found missing. That lady had dragged her all the way here and was going to force her to marry some stranger. And she was a traitor to her country. Lady Cassandra could hang for all she cared.

Sir Brogan must have misinterpreted her scowl, for he said, "I agree. This arranged marriage is not exactly something I'm looking forward to either." But he hastily checked himself, and gave her a cheeky grin, "Not that I've any objections to you. Just the "arranged" part."

She smiled back. "I feel the same way. But how can we get out of this. I don't like being used in such a way. And I'm sure you don't either."

"If only there was some way to smuggle both ourselves onto a boat and get away from here."

She looked at him, closely assessing his qualities, and came to a conclusion. "I need you to help me get to the shore this evening. I'm going to get back home."

"What? How?"

"Magic. And even though you're Norwegian and not very well liked in Denmark at the moment, if you help me, I'm sure you will be welcomed by my friends."

"I don't like what my king has done to this country and with declaring this war. I will help you. Meet me outside after sundown."

For some reason Elaine felt she could trust him. They shook hands and he left.

Miki, Luke, Robert, and William found a spot to sit down, and talked together for a while, mostly, they talked of the battle.
"The one thing that really shook me," Miki said, tracing patterens in the dirt with his fingers. "Was that fog. I swear by Merlin's bones that wasn't natural." THe other's nodded thier heads, Miki thought they must have noticed too, that the fog had made you feel dizzy and disoriented, and it had given Miki a piercing headache. "That's a powerful spell, that is," he stated, going over the basic fog spells he knew in his head. "Norway must have a very powerful mage to be able to hold that kind of spell, for that long of such a region. THis sin't going to be easy," he sighed.

~~~~~~~
Mika was searching for Aroura around the camp.
Her first battle had left her weary and much more aware. She was still very dazed. She had been slashed on the arm, but she'd have to heal it herself, no going to the medical tent, where they might discover her gender.
Finally, she spotted Aroura, talking with a group of young men. She was about to go get Aroura when one of the boys turned, revealing the face of her twin.
Mika sweaked, making Aroura and Luke look up, then, relizing they had seen her, she dashed behind a tree. Am I that out of it, that I can't even sense Miki? Oh, I hope he didn't see me... She thought.
~~~~~~
Miki felt the cold tingling in his pocket, and brought out his mirror, to see Elaine's face, accompanied by the face of a young man.
"Yes Elaine? Is everything alright?" MIki asked.

Elaine had met with Sir Brogan at the appointed time and he hurriedly seated her atop a horse and swung up behind her. They were both wearing dark cloaks, so they were unobserved by the guards. Sir Brogan took a unused route out of the palace grounds and made his way stealthily towards the coast. It took them a a couple hours of slow and steady riding before they arrived.

On the ride they barely spoke, but for one conversation. Sir Brogan was going to deliver her to the coast and after she made her way back safely to Denmark, he would sneak aboard the next ship heading out to Denmark. He'd overheard some guards speaking and they were sending over some more reinforcements for the war.

Brogan had no choice in the matter. If he stayed at court, he'd be killed when they found out Elaine was missing. Besides, he'd try to meet up with Elaine once he reached Denmark. They would somehow figure out how to find one another.

Upon reaching the coast, Brogan tethered the horse near a dilapidated boat house. No one was near. Elaine pulled out her mirror and called for Miki.

"Yes Elaine? Is everything alright?" Miki asked, his face appearing in the mirror.

Brogan gasped. Elaine quickly shushed him and turned back to Miki. "I've made it near a large body of water. Here with me is Sir Brogan. He has agreed to help me and help our cause in Denmark. We can trust in him. Now, what do you want me to do?"

'wonderful," Miki smiled into the mirror. "Now I have to get to the sea, I'll contact you in a few minutes, and we'll begin the spell, stay where you are for now, alright?" Elaine nodded, and Miki let the mirror fade.
"I have to get to ocean, quickly," MIki said to his friends. "Will anyone else come with me? I may pass out after the spell, and snoring on the beach in the middle of the night is not what I would exactly call fun."

Aurora stepped forward. "I will go."
Miki looked at her and out of the corner of her eye she saw Mika stop.
"Very well. We should leave now then to get back in time for the next attack."
They walked down to the beach, thinking horses would cause to much unwanted attention.

Rupert sat with Phillip, both felt the heavy weight of defeat but Rupter would not give up.
"What is your next plan your highness?"

(I've posted in the OCC so please go read it.)

"I will as well." Robert stood. Luke glanced at him.

"Shouldn't you-" the theif began but Robert shook his head.

"I am fine, Luke. Please; you need not treat me as a child." the small boy said, not unkindly. He followed Miki and William towards the shore.

Philip sighed and straightened his shoulders. "We will attack in two days. Straight on. There is no sense in a surprise attack; Norway knows our intentions full well. We will do what we can; the rest is in God's hands now."
