Brandywine, as for the kiddies we try our best The whole tempo of the town picks up when school starts and I have to admit I enjoy the infusion of liveliness they give us.

As for the rocks, I used to be a terrible rockhound. Totally amateurish, of course, I just picked up the ones I thought were pretty. I used to carry a bag attached to the D-ring on my saddle when I went riding in the woods. Picked up a lot of interesting rocks over the years. Maybe I should sign up for a geology course to find out what they are? Nah. I don't want to know that they are worthless rocks. I still think of them as beautiful stones.

Eldirn, glad you joined the geriatric bunch. The more the merrier!

Hehehe

Mind, I don't think of us as geriatrics in ANY sense of the word.

However, I have about decided that the warranty must expire at 40....... *stares at recalcitrant knees in disgust*

Welcome, Eldirn! You'll find the best group of people in the world in this thread! Welcome to our madness! It's a party here!!

As for the expired warranty, Bette Davis said it best, "Getting old isn't for sissies!"

Of course, I equate getting old with growing up. And I have NO intention of EVER growing up.

Welcome Eldirn! If we're talking movie hottties, Miranda Otto is MINE!
However, I have about decided that the warranty must expire at 40.......
yeah, somewhere in there....
*looks at the blood pressure meter*
Which brings up the whole 'feeling good' thing. I'm seemingly stuck between eating food that is good for you and eating food that tastes good, and whether to take medications to regulate blood pressure and cholesterol and feel lousy, or not and have the high blood pressure and feel better most of the time. And to keep that exercise up....

Exercise. Geez. Yeah.

I take karate twice a week and go to the gym once. I used to play polo, but the knees aren't cooperating lately, so I haven't been able to even climb up on a horse.

Ever tried to do a jump-kick when both knees are P.O.'ed atcha? O_o

Welcome to the newbies..I'm new here as well. Everyone is so welcoming on this site.
I know what it feels like to have run out of warranty (A long time ago). My right knee is on the specialists list for replacing. We agreed last week to leave things as they are for another year unless it gets more painful.
Having spent two days using the chain saw to cut old wood and logs, then stacking it in the woodshed. Followed by creosoting fencing panels.... I don't know whether I'll last the year. Just keep taking the tablets!
The tailend of the last US hurricane has arrived. Wet, wet, wet. Supposed to be strong winds as well over the weekend.
Now I can spend more time on the computer, without feeling guilty.
Has anyone, or have you all done the lessons in the workbooks. Need someone to tell me if I need a University degree in languages if I continue.

*returns after scanning threads of interest on the Board*
*sigh*

I'm beginning to think I have a positive talent for killing threads here. I can't even count the number of threads I've posted in and nobody else would touch it after I posted.

I am starting to worry that maybe I'm not quite...fitting in, somehow.

So many new people here.

Great to have a company like this - where I live, fantasy and sci-fi are usually regarded as kid and youngster stuff, something a mature adult should not care about. I know a couple of middle aged fantasy fans, but unfortunately, they don't post on Internet messageboards...

And don't worry about being a thread killer, Eldirn - some threads just grow slowly.

*waves* hej fellow FoFers!

Welcome Eldirn. Sounds like you actually manage quite a lot of exercise, compared to some of us *shuffles feet and blushes thinking of gym-kit once again sitting unused in the hall this week..erm...*

Kwanli - have just realised I can use you as an early warning of weather to come, as mostly our weather hits south-west and works across the country in that direction.

Celebrian - we visited the New Forest briefly last year, and from what I could see it's as you described, so no shattered memories for you

Arveleg - my husband is going through a similar dilemma on the high BP front. He may be lucky with the BP, as although it was definitely high it seems to have dropped a lot with reducing fat and salt in the diet. He's on a statin for cholesterol though - no apparent side effects. He's now got to take something for angina, which is a disturbing thing to have at 41 Unfortunately it's giving him headaches at the moment, and may do for a while until his body gets used to it.

Ah well, these things are a challenge to the cook all right. So much for tomatoes, sausages and nice crispy bacon! High fat, high salt!

I know of no one in my immediate facinity that loves fantasy the way I do. Just a couple of the girls in my classroom. Got them firmly hooked last year. I am SO proud of them. But no one that I can sit down with and have a good heart-to-heart about Lotr, Pern, Narnia,........so on and so forth. But here I do. So it's a real blessing for me. So many fans, so little time. Plus the added bonus that they are my age and not drooling (weeellll, maybe a little..Aragorn *sigh*). You'll find lots and lots of 'middle-age'~~reminds me of Middle Earth~~fans to talk to about LotR and just about any other kind of fantasy your little heart desires. Enjoy!

Has anyone, or have you all done the lessons in the workbooks. Need someone to tell me if I need a University degree in languages if I continue.

I've gotten as far as downloading and printing off the Quenya language workbook. I got bogged down in the pronunciations. I want to be able to prononce it right. That's how I first found this wonderful home-away-from-home...looking for somewhere to learn Elvish. I must admit..erm..that I haven't done much with it apart from using a few well-chosen phrases. I still do want to learn it though. Just too much going on in my alter-ego's life at the moment. Go, Elfstan!

Holy cow!!! Miss a few days and catching up is amazing!

Hi everybody, new, not new, older, younger older, greetings and well met! Can't possibly remember everything I wanted to comment on, but you are all very interesting!

Knees: OUCH! Been there with the knees, walking only one step at a time up stairs, wwith something to hang on to, painful in any position, downright debilitating. My empathy and sympathy to all with "recalcitrant knees" This year has been soo much better for me since I lost a little weight. But the twinges are still there and lurking ominously in the forground if the weight reappears.

Rocks: :heart:LOVE rocks! Okay, I might actually have a dwarf in the family tree somewhere, but I prefer my rocks above ground, not in caves. Caves are okay to visit, but not enough windows to live there! However, rocks are pretty much just pretty rocks to me, too many years since I've identified any in college geology to remember what they are. They are none the less pretty! especially the sparkley ones!!! Brandywine, we should have had you help us identify our rock collections at school!

Books: :love:I never tire of reading the Hobbit and the trilogy! I read the Sim... last year. Hard to get through, but very interesting. Want to read it again. I really want to read the other Tolkien books with the related stories in them now. Especially the ones Tom Bombadil has mentioned (and the other person ???? Sorry, can't keep up with all of you!)

Teachers: Never thought I'd be one either, but I love it now. ditto on what scots has said about summers and the rest. Scots, did your dad get to treat your student?? What kind of reaction did your student have???? Anaphalactic? (SP? oops!)

Elvish: I really want to learn Quenyan too!!! Unfortunately, I didn't get past printing off a few pages? I'm afraid it would take a LOT more time to learn than is available right now. But SOMEDAY:heart::heart::heart:

Oh, I know there is more to discuss, but this is TOO LONG already!

Hi again to everybody! Blessings of the Valar to one and all!

Later! Shireling

As oone of COE's elder staff I really should visit this thread a bit more often.
I am not sure about warranty work but the parts do wear out. After i slipped and fell at work a couple of years ago, I tore my quad tendon off at the knee and had to have it reattached with a screw and some sewing. The screw sits just above my kneecap and every now and again I bang it against something ( or even rub it against something) at work and do a little dance for my co-workers. I once asked the doc about the possibility of ever removing the scew , but he explained that it is now a part of me and removing it would leave nothing for the quadriceps to be atached to. (In some ways I really do have a screw loose)
I still have all my hair although the grey is slowly making inroads, starting at my temples.
There are advantages to aging; grandchildren in particular, are a real bonus . The effects of gravity, however , are not
Right now I'm part of the "middle" generation; I have grandchildren, children, parents, and grandparents all living in town and I see them all on a regular basis. It is really great for the youngest generation,as it was for my own children, as seeing so many grands' teaches them a lot about respect for their elders.
BTW I'm only 50 and I expect that I should have a good 40 more left befor the I finally wear right out

 Popping in to say Hi. I remember when I first was introduced to this thread by NenyaGold. I thought whoo hoo, I'm home.

It's great that Fantasy and Sci Fi isn't just the property of the young.

Hi to anyone I haven't said hello to.

My part of the British Isles is beautiful. I do love the middle to southern parts of Britain though. But the North has some some spectacular scenery. The Lake District and the North East Coast is wonderful. Especially Bamburgh and Alnwick.

I was thinkingg about categories for our age groups. How about: Freewheeling Forties. Fiesty Fifties. Sagacious Sixties.

Health and a good life to everyone.

Mae govannen, all!

Well, lessee. The knees are being even more recalcitrant than usual, between hormonal fluxes, too much Chinese food (and the resultant sodium load), and the freakin' Cat 5 hurricane moving into the Gulf of Mexico. (I live in Alabama.) You know, I can tell before I even turn on the TV, when the thing's wobbled back up to Cat 5. I hurt worse on those days. Ah, for Elrond's healing hands when you need 'em... (Or for Elrond's hands anytime, LOL *drool* )

One week from this Th I turn 44. It's a good caliber, LOL. (I'm a reserve cop.)

In case ya hadn't figured, I'm really enjoying this place, even if I am killing threads off right and left, LOL.

We are neighbors Eldirn! I live in Mississippi but came here from Alabama looking for work. I've had my eyes on Ivan too. It seems unkind to hope it keeps going t'other way to the people who have already been hit twice, but it's hard to think of it coming this way too. I was in Alabama for Fred and it changed the little town of Demopolis forever.

I added a my banner from EZ board.. its too shrunken for here though don't you think?

For Faramirgirl:

Try thinking of the rocks as jewels and gems to be created by elves and worn by you. Maybe that will make them a little more pleasant. I loved Geology in college.I even have a rock collection. The hardest thing to learn is the epochs and eras and so forth. Nothing beats a pretty rock! My favorite is rainbow sandstone.

Have fun!
Brandywine
Well the rocks gave me a headache and I got so upset that I changed and went into Astronony instead maybe I can do better with the stars, sun and plants. LOL who knows, I do fine in all classes but math and science is just not my strong points. Was not good in high school with them either. Hope that every one is having a wonderful day.

Hey! derry dol! merry dol! my hearties!

I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had purchased a "oil on canvas" print by the Brothers Hildebrandt entitled "Wedding of the King". Well, it's been at the gallery for framing for three weeks and was finally finished today. I brought it home and mounted it on my bedroom wall opposite my bed. The River-daughter loves it and so do I!

Am I the only one in the northwest?

I don't live in the Pacific Northwest but I'm pretty close (Northern California). The River-daughter and I made it up to Seattle for TolCon last May, and would love to make it up for RingCon on Halloween weekend but don't know whether or not we will due to the expense.

Conventions are a great place to meet fellow Tolkien enthusiasts, and the Pacific Northwest seems to be a great spot to be for that sort of thing. Surprisingly, Northern California seems completely void of Tolkien conventions.

This is funny! I was just visiting the RingCon site and saw that Peter Beagle is going to be a guest. I know Peter. He used to live in Davis, CA and was member of the same society for baseball historians (SABR) as I. I don't know him as a fantasy writer, I know him as a baseball fan!

Peter would tell us of when he lived in Pittsburgh and used to visit Forbes Field see the great Roberto Clemente play rightfield for the Pirates. Peter is rather soft spoken, and a very nice man.

To pinch a phrase from Atalante_star....Squeeee!!!! We are having a Convention in Manchester ~ October 22 - 24. Right here in my home town. :disco:

There are 10 guests : Craig Parker, Mark Ferguson and Lawrence Makoare (faints away) being the usual suspects. Then Robyn Malcolm, who plays the mother sending her two children away on the horse.. the other six guests are actors playing various Elves and Orcs. You can see more about it here.

I can't wait, not only to see the actors and ask pertinent questions, once I can get up off my knees. LOL But to see and speak with all the fans, the people without whom the films and actors would not be where they are.

*I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. Tra la la la lala la*

I hope to take photos, so if they come out ok, I'll let you see.

Thanks for letting me rave. *giggles*.

Hugs to everyone and keep well.

"I'm about to lose control, and I think I like it."

Well, I dunno about the "like" part. But Hurricane Ivan is predicted to track directly over top of me this afternoon and evening, with tropical storm force winds and torrential rain and flooding. In fact the flooding has already begun...

If you don't hear from me for a few days, the power's likely out. Already a quarter million people in the southern part of the state are without power.

Good Golly, Molly! I hope all your southern fans can 'float'! I'll be wishing you luck and praying you don't get hit to bad. Watched the radar just a bit ago. May the Valar protect you!

If not, that tune is: Row, row, row your boat underneath the stream! Ha ha fooled you I'm a submarine!

Nice to see this thread so active! Welcome to all the new folks. I guess I should check in here more often!
